Sacrilege (Remixes)
Sacrilege (Remixes)

SACRILEGE: REMIXES features remixes of classic Can songs by Brian Eno, Sonic Youth, The Orb, A Guy CalledGerald, U.N.K.L.E. and many others.
Given the esteem in which Can is held in many musical quarters, the title SACRILEGE is not entirely facetious when it comes to a collection of remixes. This two-disc collection gathers remixes of classic '70s-vintage krautrock as done by '90s artists influenced not only by Can's distinctive, hypnotic polyrhythms but by all that had come after.
The results are probably not for krautrock purists, but they do go a long way towards showing how much closer Can's Stockhausen-influenced theories of repetition and rhythm are to the musical mainstream two decades down the line. Whether remixed by old-school Can fans like Sonic Youth or the Buzzcocks' Pete Shelley or upstarts like U.N.K.L.E. or A Guy Called Gerald, Can's propulsive, inimitable grooves are strong enough to withstand even the most radical reconstructions.

Twelve Inch Singles, The
Twelve Inch Singles, The

Full title: The Twelve Inch Singles Collection.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Soft Cell existed for barelythree years, from late 1981 to early '84, and they've released over twice as many compilations and remix projects in the ensuing years as they did proper albums in that brief lifespan. This set collects new and old remixes of Soft Cell tunes, spread over three lengthy discs, in an unwitting history of the various fads and fancies of dance music in the '80s and '90s. The box starts with a 15-minute 1999 reworking of (naturally) "Tainted Love," a tune which makes three other appearances over the course of these 29 tracks, including the classic original extended medley of it and "Where Did Our Love Go," a worthy dub mix and a 1991 reworking. All of the band's other singles are treated similarly. Soft Cell and remix fans will love this, though more casual listeners might find the sheer length of the set somewhat off-putting.

Live/Dead [Remastered]
Live/Dead [Remastered]

Includes 2 untitled hidden tracks following "And We Bid You Goodnight."
The Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Ron "Pig Pen" McKernan (vocals, organ, congas); Phil Lesh (vocals, bass); Tom Constanten (keyboards); Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann (drums, percussion).
Producers: Grateful Dead, Bob Matthews, Betty Cantor.
Recorded live at The Fillmore West and the Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, California in 1969. Originally released on November 10, 1969.
LIVE DEAD was the first 16-track on-location recording.
Among the finest of rock's live documents, LIVE DEAD is a snapshot of the Grateful Dead circa 1969, applying the free-jazz lessons of John Coltrane to their finely-tuned, manic, and flowing boogie. It was the first released piece of evidence that the live Dead were a wholly different, multi-headed animal than the one that recorded in the studio. LIVE DEAD was also the culmination of the group's evolution into what's now considered the vintage San Francisco sound--having perfected it, the Grateful Dead would soon leave it for fresher musical pastures.
While each of LIVE DEAD's selections calls to mind a specific trick from up the band's sleeve, the opening four songs (later dubbed "the holy quartet" by Deadheads) best indicates the Dead's burning trajectory. "Dark Star" lays out a wide-open musical terrain, allowing the band to leap anywhere from its minimalist-riff launching pad and its two verses of T.S. Eliot-inspired psychedelic prose. Here,it is a dark-hued and majestic sea of ambience and intensity. "St. Stephen" explodes like a shiny metallic cloud-burst, Bob Weir's fervent vocals carrying it like a holy torch. "The Eleven," a thunderous fury of a composition based on "The Twelve Days Of Christmas" and played in 11/4 time, continues the rumbling. By the time Pigpen ends the continuous sermon with a raucous sci-fi-R&B take on Bobby "Blue" Bland's "Turn On Your Lovelight," the Dead have seemingly sailed every corner of their musical universe and crash-landed with aplomb.

Mud On The Tires
Mud On The Tires

Contains an untitled hidden track which follows "Farther Along."
Personnel includes: Brad Paisley (vocals, acoustic, electric, & 12-string guitar, mandolin, Tic-Tac bass); Alison Krauss (vocals, viola); Redd Volkaert (guitar); Randel Currie (steel guitar); Ron Block (banjo); Jerry Douglas (dobro); Justin Williamson (fiddle); Gordon J. Mote (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Kevin Grantt (bass); Bernie Herms (piano); Eric Darken (percussion); Ben Sesar (drums); Dan Akroyd, Jim Belushi, Vince Gill, Maddie Sampson, Georgia Claire Varble, Manny Rogers, Charles McCallie, Wes Hightower (background vocals).
Recorded at The Castle, Franklin, Tennessee.
If Brad Paisley did not exist it would be necessary to invent him. He stands at the crossroads between the hipster realms of alt-country and the proletarian climes of mainstream Nashville. He's too close to the middle of the road to ever be drawn to the No Depression crowd's collective bosom, but he's miles ahead of the country assembly line. On his third album he continues to do things nobody else in the Nashville hierarchy does; play a number of his own instruments, write almost all his own songs, use his own band instead of the same studio vets that occupy the credits of seemingly every other contemporary country record.
Most importantly, his songs are full of humor that doesn't descend into hee-haw jokiness. He uses a gently mocking touch to highlight the simple truths about life and love, gaining a fresh, distinctive perspective in the process. The title cut is as close as he gets to commercial, and by "Hold Me In Your Arms" he's dipping into the Bakersfield sound with aplomb. "The CigarSong" is a shaggy-dog tale worthy of Loudon Wainwright. And what other pop-country star would include two Western Swing-style instrumentals on an album, one of which ("Spaghetti Western Swing") seamlessly melds Wills and Morricone. Now that's an accomplishment!

Real Folk Blues Vol.1 & 2
Real Folk Blues Vol.1 & 2

2 LPs on 1 CD: THER REAL FOLK BLUES (1966)/MORE REAL FOLK BLUES (1967).
Producers: Leonard & Phil Chess, Sam Phillips, Willie Dixon.
Compilation producer: Andy McKaie.
Recorded in Chicago, Illinois. Includes liner notes by Mary Katherine Aldin, Willie Dixon and Paul Williams.
Digitally remastered Erik Labson (Universal Mastering, West, North Hollywood, California).
Howlin' Wolf is oneof the most distinctive voices in blues. Born Chester Burnett in 1910, he began his recording career at the age of 41, having moved from Mississippi to West Memphis. A subsequent move to Chicago in the '50s launched his career in earnest via the Chess label. The two albums included on this CD were released in the mid-'60s and draw from recordings dating back to a decade earlier or more. The "folk blues" moniker is not altogether accurate, as these are blistering electric performances.
These two dozen cuts define what we now think of as Chicago blues (little of which ever hits these staggering heights). An incredible array of singers owe the roots of their identity to Howlin' Wolf (for example, though he jettisoned standard blues structures for Dadaist soundscapes, Captain Beefheart could not have developed his voice without the Wolf). Bigger than blues, this is simply essential music.

Soul Of A Bell, The

Personnel: William Bell (vocals); Steve Cropper (guitar); Booker T. Jones, Isaac Hayes (keyboards); Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass); Al Jackson, Jr. (drums); The Memphis Horns.
Producers: Booker T. Jones, Jim Stewart.
Recorded in 1966 & 1967. Includes liner notes by Rob Bowman.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
This CD is a classic example of '60s Southern soul. William Bell isn't quite as gritty as his pal Otis Redding; he's primarily a gospel crooner, although he's more than convincing in Redding-style songs such as "Never Been Like This Before," "You're Such a Sweet Thing," and "I've Been Loving You Too Long."
"Everybody Loves a Winner," the album's big hit, is an all-but-perfect mix of soul and country (check out the faux Floyd Cramer piano part), and the same could be saidabout the now-classic "You Don't Miss Your Water." Meanwhile, Bell's vocals throughout are extraordinarily intense, particularly on a spine-tingling cover of Toussaint McCall's "Nothing Takes the Place of You."

Sixth album from the original and best whiteboy rap outfit comes six years after 'Hello Nasty' and is a paean to their home city ofNew York. Allegedly more "mature" than their previous output, this is a straight-up hip hop album without the nostalgic forays into punk of yore and features a more political lyrical slant than before. Includes the single 'Ch-Check It Out'.

Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, bass guitar); Alex Lifeson (guitar); Neil Peart (drums).
Liner Note Author: Neil Peart.
Recording information: Phase One Studios, Toronto, Ontario, Canada (03/2004 - 04/2004).
For those long-time Rush fans who've always enjoyed the group's early, pre-2112 straight-ahead hard rock, FEEDBACK will come as a welcome diversion fromthe Canadian trio's later, much more complex work. An album of 1960s-era cover tunes that were inspirational to the band members early in their careers, the disc brings Rush back to basics, stripping away the synthesizers, effects-laden guitar, and percussion triggers, leaving only guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. From the opening notes of "Summertime Blues" (seemingly inspired equally by the Blue Cheer and Who LIVE AT LEEDS versions), the band's love of these songs is obvious; this is the unadulterated sound of Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart having fun rocking out. Wisely, Rush never strays too far from the original arrangements, which allows the record to evoke the feeling of stumbling onto the world's greatest classic-rock bar band.

Engineers include: Frank Redlich, Erick Benzi, Laurent Gueneau.
Recorded in Paris, France; Los Angeles, California; and Kingston, Jamaica.
This second album from Khaled, who's considered the King of Rai in much of North Africa, blends traditional mellifluous Middle Eastern melody with trip-hop beats, ska horn blares, reggae rhythms (some of the tracks were recorded in Bob Marley's Tuff Gong studio), adult contemporary-ish piano tinkling, and symphonic string arrangements. SAHRA is a reflection of the kind of vibe that exists in the international artists enclave in contemporary Paris, where Khaled has resided since he was chased out of his native Algeria by fundamentalist groups who consider Rai music a threat.
Rai music emerged in the late 15th century as the Moors were expelled from the Andalucia region of Spain. Modern Rai music, considered the blues of North Africa, has been banned in many North African countries because of its often political content. Teaming up with French rapper IAM on "Oran Marseille," Khaled manages to effectively communicate feelings of frustration even as the duo trades verses in Arabic andFrench. The closing track "Hey Ouedi" incorporates a wide range of traditional North African percussion and string instruments into a melancholic whole.

Producers: Desmond Child, Peter Amato, Gregg Pagani.
TWISTED ANGEL shows just how far the newly adult vocalist has come from her teenage-prodigy beginnings. For one thing, she seems determined to leave her country roots far behind. Though she started down the pop route as early as 1997's YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE, TWISTED ANGEL is completely devoid of any country inflection whatsoever, focusing instead (as have a couple of Rimes's previous efforts, to varying degrees) on modern, often even danceable, pop. Rimes may be closer to Britney Spears than to Kitty Wells these days, but she seems to be expressing more of her inner self. It's surely no coincidence that three of the four songs on which she gets co-writing credit utilize the imagery of the angel with dirty wings, the child star with tears behind the smile. Lyrically, Rimes is clearly exploring the conflicts and contradictions that her childhood fame brought her, which may or may not take her higher up the pop charts, but can only be a positive artistic step for a still-young singer.

Engineers include: Gene Eichelberger, David Johnson, Joe Mills.
After his stunning debut, NATURALLY, in 1971, J.J. Cale returned the next year with this follow-up. REALLY is every bit as impressive as its predecessor, and occasionally swings so slowly that its grooves barely hang together. But to call J.J. Cale simply laid back is to miss the point--the breadth and variety in Cale's world is mysterious, riveting and soulful.
The first three tracks move from the radio-friendly "Lies" to the masterfully spare "Everything Will Be Alright" to the relatively rollicking "I'll Kiss the World Goodbye." The album was recorded in Nashville (primarily at Bradley's Barn) as well as in Muscle Shoals, Alabama (at the famed Muscle Shoals Sound Studio). A cast of stellar musicians familiar to those sites (including Roger Hawkins, Barry Becket, David Hood, Charlie McCoy, Norbert Putnam, Vasser Clements, and others) never overshadows the well-defined sound of Cale's songs and singing. This is a perfect introduction to J.J. Cale.

Jazz Masters

Personnel includes: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet, flute); Jimmy Mundy (arranger); Jean Aldegon, Paul Desmond (alto saxophone); Armand Migiani (tenor saxophone); Benny Vasseur (trombone); William Boucaya (bassoon); Leon Cohen, Henry Freeman, Wilfred Holcombe, Selden Powell, Alan Ross (winds); Rene Urtreger, Hank Jones, Raymond Fol (piano); Kenny Barron (electric piano); Kenny Burrell, Everett Barksdale (guitar); Richard Davis, Ron Carter, Jimmy Bond, Benoit Quersin (bass); Nils-Bertil Dahlander, Tony Williams, Jean-Louis Viale, Connie Kay (drums).
Producers include: Don Sebesky, Luchi De Jesus.
Recorded between 1955 & 1977. Includes liner notes by Harold Danko.
This compilation is meant to serve as an introduction to Chet Baker's music and spans three decades with tracks from the mid '50s recorded in Paris, and tracks from the mid '60s and late '70s recorded in New York City. Baker's trumpet playing is clear, spacey, and lyrical, with long melodic lines. His later tone became breathier and more emotionally charged, yet retained subtlety.
Baker sings on five of these tracks. His vocals are simple and stick to the melody with just the subtlest variation. They are delivered in straight tones barely above a whisper. High points include a heartbreaking version of Don Sebesky's "You Can't Go Home Again" with quartet and strings, nine of Baker's classic Paris 1955 Barclay sessions, and a stark and sultry vocal and guitar arrangement of "You're Mine, You!" with Kenny Burrell.

Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, bass, synthesizer); Alex Lifeson (acoustic & electric guitars); Neil Peart (drums, electronic percussion).
Additional personnel: Michael Kamen (conductor); John Webster (keyboards).
Principally recorded at McClear Pathe, Toronto, Canada from April to June 1993.
"Leave That Thing Alone" was nominated fora 1995 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, synthesizer, bass guitar); Alex Lifeson (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Neil Peart (drums, cymbals, electronic percussion).
Recording information: 1993.
Reuniting with POWER WINDOWS/HOLD YOUR FIRE producer Peter Collins, Rush released their fifteenth studio album (and nineteenth overall). During its recording, guitarist Alex Lifeson wanted the album to be more hard rock-oriented, while bassist Geddy Lee was content with their recent excursions in melodic pop. Lifeson must have won the battle, because COUNTERPARTS is a harder-rocking affair than Rush's previous several albums. It's also the strongest and most consistent set of songs the band had composed in a while, with a grittier feel (an element sorely missed by fans of the band's 1970s work).
COUNTERPARTS contains at least one track that deals with a topical issue (as in 1989's anti-suicide "The Pass," etc.)--"Nobody's Hero" is Rush's analysis of the AIDS situation. But not all of the tracks were conceived as lyrical epics; the opening "Animate" and "Stick It Out" delight in the strength of the band's re-discovered hard rock chops. And while the sheer force of "Cut To the Chase" serves as the track's catalyst, the band's pop sensibilities come back into play on the album's closer, "Everyday Glory." COUNTERPARTS is Rush's greatest work of the '90s.

This version of 5 replaces the previous version and contains two bonus tracks.
Personnel: Lenny Kravitz (vocals, acoustic & ecectric guitars, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Clavinet, Mellotron, Hammond B-3 organ, synthesizers, Mini-Moog synthesizer, Moog bass, bass, drums, percussion, congas, hand claps, drum programming); Craig Ross (guitar, slide guitar, Mini-Moog synthesizer); Harold Todd (saxophone); Michael Hunter (trumpet); George Laks (Clavinet, Mini-Moog synthesizer); Alex Alvarez (Moog synthesizer); Terry Manning (toy piano); Jack Daley (bass); Cindy Blackman (drums); Stephen Dorff, Nehemiah Heild, Sunovia Piere, Natalie Dekoning, Angie Stone, Stefanie Bolton, Tenita Drehe, Susan Marshall, Jacquie Johnson (background vocals).
"Fly Away" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
On 5, Lenny Kravitz continues to push the envelope of creativity. Defying the traditional genre categories of pop, rock, soul and alternative, 5 provides the listener with Kravitz's most far-reaching creation to date. Hip-Hop drum loops, Electronica textures and vintage Fender Rhodes, Hammond B-3 organ and Moog keyboard sounds interact throughout the disc, solidly backed by Kravitz's trademark guitar sound. As usual, Lenny plays most of the instruments on the album, from drums to bass. Delivering the goods as a songwriter and musician, Kravitz is trulya mega-talent.
As his influences range from Led Zeppelin to Parliament, Kravitz can combine classic songwriting with '90s sampled-based vibes. 5 is filled with standard Kravitz-type, beautifully sung, well-crafted songs such as "If You Can't Say No", "Thinking of You" and "Can We Find a Reason." Although Kravitz hasn't yet fully reached the vast commercial potential of his talent, 5 will appeal to music buyers from vastly different categories.

The Mekons: Jon Langford (vocals, guitar, melodica, sound effects); Tom Greenhalgh (vocals, auto-harp, piano); Rico Bell (vocals, harmonica, accordion); Sally Timms (vocals); Mitch Marlow (guitar); Susie Honeyman (fiddle); Sarah Corrina (bass, background vocals); Steve Goulding (drums).
Additional personnel: John Rice (electric sitar); Edith Frost, Kelly Hogan, Neko Case (background vocals).
Recorded in Chicago, Illinois and London, England.
The first album of the 21st century by this band of punks-turned-honky-tonkers-turned-avant popsters gives rise to thoughts of the circus, clowns, and all things waggish. One imagines a rag-tag assortment of troupe members sitting out back behind the big top, beating on whatever instruments they might happen to come across. With JOURNEY TO THE END OF THE NIGHT this band of merry pranksters has added one of its most accessible and rewarding albums to an eclectic and wide-ranging catalog that reaches back to the late '70s.
The lyrics and song structures are remarkable for the way they flout pop convention while remaining entirely engaging and accessible. The album-opening "Myth" putters along like a dilapidated sailboat, as spare electric guitar, authoritative bass, melodica, and the band's four vocalists combine for a rhythmically off-kilter balancing act that somehow shines. The exquisite "Tina" grafts accordion over a classic-sounding dub background, with bubbling synths and well-crafted vocal harmonies. Other bits of pop mastery abound: the strange and anthemic "Cast No Shadows," the bouncy rocker "Neglect," and the groove-cutting "Out in the Night," among others, all of which make for a winning grab-bag of pop gems.

Late At Night With Dean Martin [Remastered]
Late At Night With Dean Martin [Remastered]

Includes liner notes by Stan Cornyn.
Digitally remasteredby Lee Herschberg.
Hot on the heels of all the easy-listening compilations that appeared in the late '90s/early '00s came a collection from Mr. Dean Martin--the laid back, easy livin' crooner at his most, erm, laid back. The image of Martin as the personification of '50s cool and Martini-sipping good living are now all mixed up with dewy-eyed nostalgia for some long lost golden era. However, what is on show here is his skill with a song and his uncanny ability to make a very difficult singing technique, crooning, sound easy.
Martin's rich, lilting voice, here featured on Capitol and Reprise recordings of works by a whole variety of talented songwriters, will soothe away your troubles or take you to some cooler than cool bar in '50s New York. Perfect for an evening's seduction. Cocktail shakers at the ready!

Recorded live at the 25th anniversary of The Montreux Jazz Festival, Montreux, Switzerland on July 8, 1991. Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather.
MILES AND QUINCY LIVE AT MONTREUX won the 1994 Grammy Award for "Large Jazz Ensemble."
MILES DAVIS & QUINCY JONES LIVE AT MONTREUX finds the legendary trumpeter come full circle, returning at the end of his career to those musical highlights which set his sound and style in stone for generations of listeners. Drawing upon his collaborations with the innovative arranger Gil Evans, LIVE AT MONTREUX reprises some of Miles greatest moments from THE BIRTH OF THE COOL, MILES AHEAD, PORGY AND BESS and SKETCHES OF SPAIN.
The fact that Miles Davis, for some 40 years, steadfastly refused to offer his fans a backwards glance in the face of new and more interesting musical challenges, only adds to the poignancy of this July 8, 1991 event. It's as if he knew that, in a spiritual sense, he had to face this music one last time.
Clearly when he hit the stage at Montreux, Miles Davis wasn't the instrumentalist he once was, but his musicianship had grown more profound with every passing year. Yet once Miles gets his sea legs under him, he imbues each passage with his classic logic, intuition and sense of romance. On the more taxing passages, his stunt doubles--alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett and trumpeter Wallace Roney--play with great passion and poetic restraint. Jones and Gil Goldstein's adaptation of the Evans charts are brassier and more sprawling than the originals. Still, it's Evans originals such as "Orgone," "Blues For Pablo" and "Solea" that elicit the most powerfulperformances. And at the end, when confronted with the incantory, guitar-like grandeur of "Solea," Miles rises one last time to the challenge of these ancient themes, going out like a champion...with his boots on.

This is part of Motown Records' Ultimate Collection series.
Be assured that the title here is not remotely hyperbolic; in fact, it's hard to imagine a better single disc Supremes greatest hits collection. Every Supremes song you could conceivably want is here in chronological order, beginning with their first Top 40 hit, 1963's "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes," to 1969's cleverly calculated farewell smash "Someday We'll Be Together."
All of them are in the original glorious mono. This compilation is also a pretty interesting time capsule look at various '60s pop styles; for example, in retrospect, it's hard to think of the Supremes as having ever been remotely psychedelic, but even they got a little trippy with songs like "The Happening" and "Reflections."

Silver Apples Of The Moon
Silver Apples Of The Moon

Laika: Margaret Fiedler, Guy Fixsen (vocals, guitar, melodica, Moog, vibraphone, marimba, programming); Louise Elliott (flute, saxophone); John Frenett (bass); Lou Ciccotelli (drums, percussion).
Emerging from indie-pop band Moonshake (their name taken from a Can song), the duo of Margaret Fiedler and Guy Fixsen christened theirnew sonic venture like the first canine shot into space, and thus whipped Laika into bold new pop territory. With songs that surf upon luscious waves of Moogs, marimbas, and a motley crew of samples (mixed with a craftsman's touch), Laika carved a neat little niche for themselves in the mid-'90s, operating out of the equally inventive Too Pure label (home to fellow space critters Mouse on Mars).
Some of Moonshake's twinkly charm surfaces in the acoustic fallout of drummer Lou Ciccotelli, but Laika's attractive sheen is mostly in Fiedler's mousey vocals, which skit amongst the aural nooks and crannies. From the chugging drums of "44 Robbers" to the mechanical fizzbeats of "If You Miss" to the spiraling fourth-world Moog funk of "Red River," SILVER APPLES OF THE MOON is a big, juicy byte taken from the a silicon tree.

Roxy Music: Bryan Ferry (vocals, keyboards); Phil Manzanera, Neil Hubbard (guitar); Andy Mackay (saxophone); Paul Carrack (keyboards); Alan Spenner, Neil Jason, Gary Tibbs (bass); Allan Schwartzberg, Andy Newmark, Simon Phillips (drums).
Digitally remastered by Bob Ludwig (Gateway Studio, Portland, Maine).
What's remarkable about Roxy Music's final three albums is how each one builds on its predecessor. FLESH & BLOOD was the middle of this triptych (which ended with AVALON, the group's peak achievement). Where its predecessor, MANIFESTO, still had ties to the band's pre-hiatus first era, FLESH & BLOOD heads ever further into the lush romanticism that singer Bryan Ferry was to explore fully as a solo artist in the '80s. Where an earlier Roxy Music may have embraced an element of camp in a cover of "In The Midnight Hour, here Ferry nods to the camp factor only fleetingly.
Reduced to a trio of Ferry, guitarist Phil Manzanera, and saxophonist Andy MacKay, Roxy Music brought in a range of session players as needed. This, in effect, freedthe band to follow the songs wherever they needed to go, which was straight into gorgeously produced romantic landscapes. The song's rich melodies cast Ferry as a matinee-idol leading man, a role he adapted to so successfully that songs like "My Only Love" sound like part of his own solo career.

Though much of Kenny Chesney's recorded output is distinctly soft-spoken and genial, BE AS YOU ARE represents a full realization of his mellow side. A conceptual song-cycle written about the country singer's experiences in the Caribbean, the tunes here are often so laid-back that they make Jimmy Buffett seem as frenetic as David Byrne.
Ripping a page from Buffet's textbook, the album employs steel drums, Latin percussion, Cuban-style nylon-string guitar leads, and even the sounds of crashing waves, to induce a breezy, relaxed feeling that lingers longafter the disc stops spinning. Chesney's exquisitely reserved vocals, however, always bear a hint of melancholy, suggesting an update of the same dark-side-of-the-island-vacation dream implied by Buffett himself in his hit "Margaritaville." Chesney has proclaimed BE AS YOU ARE as his "most personal" work, and the songs "Somewhere in the Sun" and "Boston" (which describes a woman who "wears a Red Sox cap to hide her baby dreads") both indicate an existential escapist fantasy lurking just beneath the surface of these still waters.

Peter Gabriel Vol.3 [SACD]
Peter Gabriel Vol.3 [SACD]

Personnel: Peter Gabriel (vocals, synthesizer); David Rhodes (guitar, background vocals); Robert Fripp, Dave Gregory, Paul Weller (guitar); Dick Morrissey (saxophone); Larry Fast (synthesizer); John Giblin (bass); Tony Levin (stick); Morris Pert, Jerry Marotta, Phil Collins (percussion); Kate Bush (background vocals).

Recorded at the Manor Mobile, Bath and at the Townhouse, London, England.
Peter Gabriel's third self-titled album pushed the boundaries of recording technology (it was among the first to experiment with gating acoustic drums, an effect Phil Collins used later in his song "In The Air Tonight"). Gabriel's mix of electronic sounds and alienated lyrics created a mood captured in the eerie single "Games Without Frontiers."
The song "Biko," which became a Gabriel standard, concerned the death of South African activist Steven Biko during interrogation by police. The song inspired Little Steven to start the Artists Against Apartheid project.
