Spirits Having Flown
The Bee Gees: Barry Gibb (vocals, guitar); Robin Gibb (vocals); Maurice Gibb (bass, background vocals). Additional personnel: Alan Kendall, George Terry(guitar); Herbie Mann (flute); Gary Brown (saxophone); Blue Weaver (keyboards, Arp & Moog synthesizers, vibraphone); Harold Cowart (bass); Dennis Byron (drums); Joe Lala (congas, percussion); Daniel Ben Zebulon (congas); The Boneroo Horns. Producers: The Bee Gees, Abby Galuten, Karl Richardson. Recorded at Criteria Recording Studios, Miami, Florida between March and November 1978. The late-'70s was an interesting time to be a Bee Gee. The trio had experienced a rebirth as disco kings via SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER even though their music at the time was closer to the Spinners than to Donna Summer. By 1979, disco's popularity had begun to wane, but this didn't affect the Gibb's much, since they were primarily just R&B/pop artists to begin with. On SPIRITS, the Bee Gees blend their Aussie take on Philly Soul (the transcendent "Too Much Heaven," the suggestive "Love You Inside Out") with contemporary pop ("Tragedy") and that unique sound that is theirs alone (the serene, glowing title track). The brothers' trademark harmonies and irresistible pop hooks were in evidence throughout, making SPIRITS HAVING FLOWN essential for those enamored of mid-period Bee Gees or R&B-flavored '70s pop. Concert By The Sea [Remastered]
Personnel: Errol Garner (piano); Eddie Calhoun (bass); Denzil Best (drums). Recorded live in Carmel, California on September 19, 1955. Includes liner notes by Stanley Dance. Garner's place in the history of jazz piano is unusual. He demonstrates no obvious influences of any otherpianist, he appears to have influenced no-one; and yet his is such a thoroughly engaging, happy, always enjoyable style. Here, he deftly picks his way through a sprightly selection of songs. Throughout, the Elf happily indulges his love for lengthy introductions that defy listeners to identify the coming tune, yet, when he finally arrives at the song as the composer wrote it, everything seems just right. Ageless music in an impishly droll style that defies categorization; it's just Erroll's way. SKU: 1057730

Lo-fi India Abuse
Controversial yet cloistered, Bryn Jones, who died in January 1999, created Muslimgauze as a conduit for his pro-Palestinian views. However, these ambient works allow even the non-politically minded to enjoy Muslimgauze's diverse experimental electronics dotted with Eastern samples. LO-FI INDIA ABUSE, one of theband's more percussive albums, constructs a sonic mosaic from the first song, "Antalya," which loops primitive sounding drums over an eerie reverberating Indian vocal sample and dub-like tendencies. Here, whistles, whoops, and high-pitched wails overlay each other like ornate tiles. The goal of Muslimgauze was always to encourage curiosity by using music to convey its message. With this unique and easily digestible program of drums, samples, and electronica, it is posthumously successful. SKU: 1041729

Blues In The Night
Dinah Shorehas been typecast as a singer of clean-cut rural purity. Although she does fine work with "Dear Hearts and Gentle People" and the like, this tribute CD flings her buttermilk image to the cabbage patch. Dinah Shore is strictly an urbanite in here. She shines as she performs sophisticated blues, torch songs, exotic Latin numbers, and intelligent Tin Pan Alley standards. The forgotten hit from the 1920s, "Chloe," is a treacherously difficult melody that Dinah smoothly dishes out with all the appropriate pathos. "Somebody Loves Me," "Stardust," and "Body and Soul" are some of the all time great songs, and Dinah's versions are passionate yet restrained. The lady with the pure voice sings the world-weary lyrics and difficult melody of Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" with great ease. Her success came from a talent that handled complex compositions with the same grace as simple songs. SKU: 4133463

Heart Of Saturday Night, The
Personnel includes: Tom Waits (vocals, piano); Pete Christlieb (tenor saxophone); Jim Hughart (bass); Bill Goodwin (drums). Recorded at WallyHeider Studio, Hollywood, California. On his second album, Waits moved beyond the simple folk-rock arrangements of his debut to explore jazzier realms. Though artistically Waits was still in his infancy, it was here that he began to develop the bedraggled, chain-smoking, whiskey-swilling, beat poetry-spouting street character image that he expanded on throughout the '70s. The arrangements are based around Waits' voice (beginning to develop that famous rasp) and piano, supported '50s-style West Coast jazz touches. Since Waits was still struggling through the imitation phase of his fascination with the writing of Kerouac, Bukowski, etc., some of the lyrics seem callow, but even at this early stage he could still produce gems. "The Heart of Saturday Night" (sort of a low-key sequel to "Ol' '55") and the late-night lonesome blues of "Please Call Me Baby" are worth the price of entry in and of themselves. SKU: 5048751

The Mavericks: Raul Malo (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, electric sitar, 6-string bass, piano, drums); Nick Kane (acoustic, electric, 12-string and baritone guitars); Paul Deakin (electric guitar, drums); Robert Reynolds (acoustic & electric basses, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Mark Casstevens (acoustic, gut string & arch-top guitars, banjo); James House (acoustic guitar); Robbie Turner (pedal steel guitar); George Tidwell, Jim Williamson (trumpet); Dennis Good, Chris Dunn (trombone); Dennis Burnside, Dane Bryant (piano); David Hungate (acoustic bass); Glenn Caruba (percussion); Nashville String Machine. Recorded at Ocean Way Recording Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. "Dance The Night Away" was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best CountryPerformance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Though once classified, however vaguely, as a country outfit, The Mavericks have expanded their sound far beyond those confines on TRAMPOLINE. This frothy, colorful piece of pop artistry boasts a variety of influences. There are Tex-Mex touches on "I Should Know" (which also features some unusual, Lennonish chord changes), and the effervescent "Dance The Night Away." There's the jazzy, vibraphone-colored ballad "Fool #1." Elsewhere, '60s soul rhythms and Duane Eddy-style guitar licks alternate with Beatlesesque compositional touches (there's that Lennon influence again). Singer Raul Malo's primary influence, Roy Orbison, can still be heard here, both in Malo's lustrous tenor and the overall feel of the tunes and arrangements, which bring to mind the kind of classy early-'60s pop that was lushly orchestrated without sounding overproduced and could express heartbreak without losing its uplifting sonic veneer. Houses Of The Holy
Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals); Jimmy Page (acoustic & electric guitars, electric 12-string guitar, background vocals); John Paul Jones (mellotron, organ, synthesizers, bass, background vocals); John Bonham (drums). Recorded at Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York and Olympic, London, England. All tracks have been digitally remastered. HOUSES OF THE HOLY was the nickname Led Zeppelin concocted for the huge sports arenas they were then playing, because by the time HOUSES OF THE HOLY was released on March 28, 1973, Led Zeppelin was among the biggest touring bands in all of rock. And in producer-composer-guitarist Jimmy Page, they had one of its most gifted arrangers, although compared to their previous two albums, HOUSES OF THE HOLY is more of a bare-bones, back-to-the-roots kind of production. Certainly tunes like "The Rain Song," "Over The Hills And Far Away"and "No Quarter" showcase vocalist Plant's whisper-to-a-scream range, Jones' tasteful use of emerging electronic keyboard technologies, and Page's expressive use of multiple guitar tracks to create an orchestral ambience. But on the whole there is more of an emphasis on the rhythmic interplay between Page, Jones and Bonham, from the James Brown-derived funk of "The Crunge" and the reggaeish dance breaks of "D'yer Mak'er," to the menacing eastern modalities of "Dancing Days" and the rocking raveups of "The Song Remains The Same" and "The Ocean." Recorded during the spring of 1972 at Stargroves (one of Mick Jagger's homes) and through the summer of 1972 at Olympic Studios in London and Electric Lady in New York City. SKU: 1001553

Grand Wazoo, The
Personnel: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar, percussion); Sal Marquez (vocals, trumpet, brass); George Duke (vocals, keyboards); Janet Neville-Ferguson (vocals); Tony Duran (guitar); Mike Altschul, Earl Dumler, Tony "Bat Man" Ortega, Joanne Caldwell McNabb, Johnny Rotella, Fred Jackson, Joel Peskin (woodwinds); Ernie Watts (saxophone); Bill Byers, Ken Shroyer (trombone); Malcolm McNabb, Ernie Tack(brass); Don Preston (Mini-Moog synthesizer); Erroneous (bass); Aynsley Dunbar (drums); Bob Zimmitti, Alan Estes, Lee Clement (percussion). Recorded at Paramount Studios, Hollywood, California. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This album appeared within the same year as WAKA/JAWAKA and continued Zappa's exploration of the possibilities for composing and arranging material for a big band with a hefty brass and reed section. Both albums were produced during the period in which he was recuperating from injuries sustained when he was thrown from the stage during a London concert the year before. THE GRAND WAZOO still sounds like a fresh and equal marriage of Zappa's already developed and apparent musical sensibilities with large ensemble jazz writing. The couple vocal numbers utilize the singing as another melodic line, and are knitted into the whole fabric rather than laying on top. Unfortunately, after this pair of 1972 albums, Zappa never revisited this particular approach again--his touring bands were never on this scale and his large-scale writing was directed towards orchestras. Alternative Album, The
All tracks are alternative tracks for Cream's first album "FRESH CREAM," except track #7 which had never been released. Cream: Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker. Recorded between 1966 and 1967. This is an entertaining collection of outtakes, alternate takes, and odd mixes from the period when Cream was recording its debut album, FRESH CREAM. The sound quality is wildly variable. On "Lawdy Mama" and "Rollin' andTumblin'," Ginger Baker's drums and Jack Bruce's bass are largely inaudible. Some of the performances, "Cat Squirrel," in particular, are a little unfocused, and there are moments, as on "Wrapping Paper," where the songs stop before they're supposed to. Overall, however, this is a fascinating glimpse of the genesis of a great band. Hardcore fans will delight in the inclusion of a Falstaff beer commercial done in the style of "Sunshine of Your Love." Pot Luck With Elvis [Remastered]
Compilation producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. Digitally remastered by Dennis Ferrante. With his 1962 album POT LUCK, Elvis Presley--one of the main men who shook the world with the wild thing called rock & roll--moves away from the feral sounds of his youth towards a more polished pop sound. Along with the ripe vocal backgrounds, there's more of a country influence, more of a "shuffle" feel rather than a rockin' sound that dabbled in Latin rhythms and moods. Here, Elvis sounds less brash, more overtly romantic--the song "You'll Be Gone" has more melodramatic angst than an entire season of "Beverly Hills 90210." This isn't to imply that the King's fires were out--he still sings with urgency and conviction on "Gonna Get Back Home Somehow" and the sly '50s R&B-styled (think Ray Charles) "Steppin' Out of Line." If you're looking for Elvis the Wildman Rocker or the Impassioned Rhythm & Blues singer, you must look elsewhere. If you're a thoroughly devoted Elvis fan, take POT LUCK and relaxwith the King. His Best Vol.1
Personnel includes: Chuck Berry (vocals, guitar); Jimmy Rogers (guitar); Johnnie Johnson (piano); Willie Dixon, G. Smith (bass); Ebby Hardy, Fred Below (drums); Jerome Green (maracas). Recorded between 1955 & 1958. Includes liner notes by Billy Altman. Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios, North Hollywood, California). This is part of Chess' 50th Anniversary Collection series. A seminal figure in the evolution of rock 'n' roll, Chuck Berry's influence as songwriter and guitarist is incalculable. His cogent songs captured adolescent life, yet the artist was 30 years old when he commenced recording. In 1955, during a chance visit to Chicago, Berry met bluesman Muddy Waters, who advised the young singer to approach the Chess label. Berry's demo of "Ida May," was sufficient to win a recording contract and the composition, retitled "Maybellene," duly became his debut single. Berry enjoyed further hits with "Thirty Days" and "No Money Down," but it was his third recording session that proved even more productive, producing a stream of classics, "Roll Over Beethoven," "Too Much Monkey Business" and "Brown-Eyed Handsome Man." The artist's subsequent releases read like a lexicon of pop history - "School Days," "Rock And Roll Music" (all 1957), "Sweet Little Sixteen," "Reelin' And Rockin," "Johnny B.Goode" (1958), "Back In The USA," "Let It Rock" (1960) and "Bye Bye Johnny" (1960) are but a handful of the peerless songs written and recorded during this prolific period. Berry was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1986. His stature as an essential figure in the evolution of popular music cannot be underestimated. SKU: 1011601
