Whole Of The Moon, The (The Best Of Mike Scott & The Waterboys)
Full title: The Whole Of The Moon: The Music Of Mike Scott And The Waterboys. THE WHOLE OF THE MOON... is a retrospective including previously unreleased material and B-sides. Personnel includes: Mike Scott (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, acoustic & electric pianos, mouth organ, keyboards, bass, rattles, bells, sound effects); Vinnie Kilduff (acoustic guitar); Alec Finn (bouzouki); Anthony Thistlethwaite (acoustic, electric & slide mandolins, mouth organ, saxophone, horns, bass); Marek Lipski (violin); Steve Wickham (fiddle); George Stathos (clarinet); Roddy Lorimer (trumpet, horns, background vocals); Karl Wallinger (acoustic & electric pianos, keyboards, synthesizer, snare drum, cymbals, background vocals); James Hallawel (electric piano, Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards); Colin Blakey (piano); Scott Thunes, Lu (bass); Chris Whitten, Carla Azar, Kevin Wilkinson, Zak Starkey (drums); Bajiri Johnson (congas, rattles, shakers). Producers include: Mike Scott, Bill Price, Mike Glossop, John Brand, Niko Balas. Digitally remastered by Chris Blair (Abbey Road, London, England). In Ireland, they're practically the Beatles, but the Waterboys never achieved the same godlike status in the States, perhaps due to cultural barriers (though leader Mike Scott's continual Dylan fixation makes that theory unlikely). This compilation does a nice job of summing up the group's too-short career. The Waterboys gave birth toboth World Party and Mike Scott's even more Dylanesque solo career, but it's the band's glory days that are explored here. The panoramic, yearning "Fisherman's Blues" and the gentle "is this from BLOOD ON THE TRACKS?" lilt of "When Ye Go Away" are as good as '80s folk-rock gets. "The Whole of the Moon" and "The Return of Pan" show the band's way with an epic. There's even a hint of things to come, with the inclusion of a Scott solo track, the spiritually oriented "What Do You Want Me to Do?" SKU: 1005892

Poet In New York
Personnel: Georgie Fame (vocals); Bob Malach (saxophone); David Hazeltine (piano); Peter Washington (bass); Louis Hayes (drums). Includes liner notes by Ben Sidran. After an eight-year layoff Georgie Fame returned to his own recording career with POET IN NEW YORK. Though Fame is known as much for his organ playing as for his singing, he eschews the former entirely on this album, choosing instead to vocalize exclusively. Part of the album's title comes from Fame's New York accompanists, a solidly swinging quartet comprising some of the Big Apple's finest jazzers. There's a decidedly '50s feel to this album, right down to the cover, which recalls classic Blue Note artwork of that era. The reigning aesthetic is a blend of West Coast cool jazz and Eddie Jefferson-inspired vocals. Fame and company tackle some well-known tunes, including the swing anthem "Symphony Sid" and the evergreen ballad "Lush Life," but Fame contributes a couple of original compositions as well and they blend right in with their esteemed companions. Throughout, Fame is soulful and sophisticated, simmering but never overcooked. Anyone wholongs for the days of Joe Mooney or Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross should embrace POET IN NEW YORK SKU: 1038406

No Protection
NO PROTECTION is MadProfessor's dub version of the Massive Attack album PROTECTION. Personnel: Massive Attack (programming); Mad Professor (drums, percussion); Tracey Thorn, Nicolette, Horace Andy, Tricky (vocals); Chester Kamen (guitar); Craig Armstrong (piano, string arrangement); William The Conqueror (keyboards); Nolan Iril (drums, percussion); Rob Merrill (drums); Marius De Vries, Andy Wright, The Insects, Nick Warren (programming). Although variously labeled as hip-hop, trip-hop and soul, the distinctive sound forged by Massive Attack often resembles a more innovative take on the lover's rock style of reggae that launched the careers of Caron Wheeler and Maxi Priest. (Massive Attack in turn put themselves on the map as a group with tunes voiced by old-time reggae crooner Horace Andy). Viewed in that light, it seems a natural decision for the group to invoke the time-honored Jamaican tradition of the dub album, a group of tracks (taken in this case from their critically acclaimed PROTECTION) reworked by a mixing board auteur like Mad Professor. A second generation digital offspring of original dub pioneers like King Tubby and Lee "Scratch" Perry, the professor's concoctions bear only a distant relationship to the analog dub which emanated from Tubby's reel-to-reel and echo-chamber set-up. While spiritually akin to '70s dub, the sound here is transformed by Mad Prof's digital production values, the acid house aesthetics of 1990s London, and of course unmistakable Massive Attack elements--like the fragments of Tracey Thorn's torch song vocal that reverberate throughout. Ladies And Gentlemen (The Best Of George Michael)
Personnel includes: George Michael, Elton John, Astrud Gilberto, Aretha Franklin, Queen. Producers: George Michael, Jon Douglas, Narada Michael Walden, Queen. Though he made his initial mark on music history as half of the unctuous British duo Wham, George Michael wasted little time in proving himself more than just a pretty pop face. This comprehensive two-disc compilation documents the career of a man who was able to successfully meld pop, R&B andserious, introspective balladry without ever losing sight of the all-important groove and hook. Thankfully, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN doesn't skimp on tracks from Michael's classic solo debut, and tracks like Bo Diddley beat-driven "Faith" and the lusty, Prince-like "I Want Your Sex" sound as fresh as ever. Later cuts show Michael's maturation as both a vocalist and songwriter, and collaborations with Elton John and bossa nova legend Astrud Gilberto serve to emphasize the wide stylistic range Michael is capable of traversing. End Of All Things To Come, The [PA]
Mudvayne: Chud (vocals); Guug (guitar); Ru-D (bass); Spug (drums). Recorded at Pachyderm Studio, Cannon Falls, Minnesota. When Mudvayne's major-label debut appeared, many critics either lumped the band into the same rap-metal bag as Korn and Limp Bizkit, or merely dismissed the combo as a Slipknot rip-off. On THE END OF ALL THINGS TO COME, the group transcends the comparisons and wacky makeup to deliver a ferocious slab of the hard stuff that, for once, truly deserves to be termed "alternative." Equal parts Morbid Angel, Rush, and Shudder To Think, the disc highlights Mudvayne's ability to temper nu-metal's characteristic machine-gun riffing and throat-shredding vocals with a variety of quirky textural shifts and (gasp!) melodic vocalizing. Lyrically, the group mines the same nihilist/anarchistic territory popularized by Metallica and scores of '80s hardcore punk groups. Luckily, however, Mudvayne avoids the I-wanna-blow-up-the-world-'cause-my-mom -told-me-to-take-out-the-trash syndrome and manages to come up with several interesting and genuinely chilling variations on the theme. LIVE 1970 appeared previously, in a slightly different form, as LIVE AT THE PROMS. The excerpts from "Facelift" and "Moon in June" featured here date from a different performance earlier in the same year, and "Out-Bloody-Rageous" is missing its extended introduction. These recordings were made just prior to Robert Wyatt's last year with the band. Listening to Soft Machine's studio work of the time alongside Wyatt's next project (Matching Mole) makes the reasons for his departure clear. Matching Mole returned Wyatt to the song forms he preferred, while Soft Machine's FOUR and FIVE found the band eschewing vocals in favor of extended, jazz-based pieces. This performance dates from the period between the recording of THIRD and FOUR and finds Soft Machine in quartet mode, with saxophonist Elton Dean joining theoriginal trio of Wyatt (drums), Mike Ratledge (keyboards), and Hugh Hopper (bass). For part of the set, Soft Machine is expanded to a quintet with the addition of Lyn Dobson. The four-part suite "Esther's Nose Job" is a standout, and the sound quality throughout the recording is very good. SKU: 4125340

Fire At Keaton's Bar And Grill
Personnel includes: Roy Nathanson (soprano, alto & tenor saxophones); Deborah Harry, Elvis Costello, Nancy King, Kenny Washington, Juan "Coco" De Jesus, Richard Butler, David Driver, Darius De Haas, Corey Harris (vocals); Ned Rothenberg (alto saxophone); Jay Rodriguez (tenor saxophone); Sam Furnace (baritone saxophone); Rob Johnson (trumpet); Curtis Fowlkes (trombone); Erik Freidlander (cello); Bill Ware (vibraphone, piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Cyrus Chestnut, Deidre Rodman, Anthony Coleman (piano); Charles Earland (Hammond B-3 organ); Marc Ribot, David Gilmore (guitar); Brad Jones (bass); E.J. Rodriguez (drums, congas, percussion); Ben Perowsky (drums); Bob Appel, Greg Thompson (background vocals). Engineers include: Hugo Dwyer, Ciaran Byrne, Howard Johnston. Includes liner notes by Ray Dobbins. Saxophonist/composer Roy Nathanson's resume includes John Lurie's Lounge Lizards, fusion-freebop combo The Jazz Passengers (co-leading with Curtis Fowlkes), a saxophone quartet with Steve Lacy, and a long-term duo with avant-jazz keyboardist Anthony Coleman, as well as leading his own quartet. Here, he constructs a modern song cycle, a series of vocal and instrumental vignettes, where the listener is given a tour of the colorful characters that inhabit KEATON'S BAR &GRILL. Collaborating with lyricist Ray Dobbins, Nathanson paints some intriguing (and sometimes harrowing) portraits. The characters are portrayed by Elvis Costello, Deborah Harry, Nancy King and Corey Harris, while the sounds range from blues-drenched, swinging soul-jazz organ combos (featuring the late jazz organ legend Charles Earland), to modern Astor Piazzolla-style tango, to quirky art-songs in the vein of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht. Nathanson wails, but he solos judiciously--FIRE AT KEATON'S... features tight, intricate, unpredictable ensemble playing. The music, as well as the singers, becomes part of the narrative in the classic musical theater tradition. SKU: 1037233

Da Capo (Remastered & Expanded)
Love: Arthur Lee, Bryan Maclean (vocals, guitar); John Echols (guitar); Tjay Cantrelli (flute, saxophone); Alban "Snoopy" Pfisterer (keyboards, percussion); Ken Forssi (bass); Michael Stuart (percussion). Recorded in Hollywood, California. Love, fronted by the charismatic Arthur Lee, was the first rock band signed to the '60s folk label Elektra, and their wild, enigmatic sound was a big part of their unique appeal. DA CAPO, Love's second album, found the group augmented to a septet, allowing the material to shift through a variety of musical styles. The first six songs hover around the three-minute mark, employing odd time changes to touch on everything from waltzes and free jazz (in the same song) to more mainstream, pie-in-the-sky folk rock. After scoring a hit with the reverb-laden, fuzz-guitar driven "Seven& Seven Is," their follow-up FOREVER CHANGES led them down the path of critical respectability. SKU: 1072224

Rid Of Me
PJ Harvey: Polly Jean Harvey (vocals, guitar, violin, cello, organ); Robert Ellis (vocals, drums, percussion); Steve Vaughan (bass). Producers: Head, PJ Harvey, Robert Ellis, Steve Albini. Engineers include: Head, PJ Harvey, Robert Ellis. Slicker in production and tighter as a band, RID OF ME finds PJ Harvey's dynamic blend of siren sing-song and leering guitar groomed and ready for show. As a band, their evolution into an empathetic unit rather than mere accompaniment is obvious in their tight yet subtle arrangements. Recorded by Steve Albini, this forceful sophomore effort veers from hoarsely quiet to ferociously looming in one beat. Drummer Robert Ellis and bassist Robert Vaughn's precise rhythm pocket and Ellis' background vocals spill over with a confidence that was lacking on DRY, and the band's grasp of the material is envious. RIDOF ME'S songs further examine Harvey's love for farce (in particular, "Me-Jane" and "50 Ft. Queenie"), and rework the accusatory mysticism of DRY ("Snake" and "Man-Size Sextet"). "Man-Size" offers the lyrical stab, "I'll calculate my birth right," while "Me-Jane" hurls insults at an unresponsive Tarzan. With a quick nod to Bob Dylan on "Highway 61 Revisited," Harvey sheds a glimpse on her lyrical influences and strong taste for innuendo. RID OF ME proves PJ Harvey and her band to be a consistent and driving force in the face of 1990s rock. SKU: 1005745

Voice Of The Extabay, The
2 LPS on 1 CD: VOICE OF THE XTABAY (1950)/INCA TAQUL. Personnel includes: Yma Sumac (vocals); Les Baxter, Moises Vivanco (arranger, conductor). Exotica began here in this historic 1950 meeting between the Peruvian "princess" Yma Sumac and Hollywood arranger Les Baxter. Neither Inca royalty nor a Bronx girl named Amy Camus as counter-legend had it, Sumac was raised an upper middle class Peruvian, but gifted with an uncanny multi-octave range. With such a powerful instrument at his disposable, the imaginatively resourceful Baxter proceeded to patch together musical bits and pieces from around the globe--gamelon orchestra, all manner of modal scales, ethnic percussion, impressionistic strings--into a fantasy concoctionthat has stayed surprisingly fresh after a half a century. There probably isn't anything here that wasn't first heard in Rimsky-Korsakov or Debussy, not to mention Max Steiner whose path-finding score for KING KONG remains the talisman for pop musical journeys to the unknown. Still, Baxter is a skillful orchestrator, especially of strings, and Sumac herself never falters in her tricky wordless improvisations. It was super kitschy stuff at the time and remains so, but retains a certain musical integrity, even timelessness, much like the stone god that hovers scowling above our ersatz princess on the famous album cover. Nimrod
Green Day: Billie Joe (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Mike Dirnt (vocals, bass); Tre Cool (drums, bongos, tambourine). Additional personnel: Petra Haden (violin); Gabriel McNair, Stephen Bradley (horns). All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Green Day's infectious brand of thrashy power-pop is full of references to the generation of punk which preceded them, with adenoidal vocals spinning tales of youthful angst against a backdrop of hard, fast riffs. The difference, of course, is that Green Day is having more fun than the Buzzcocks would ever have admitted to. NIMROD catches the band updating their sound while holding onto the speed and recklessness that made their previous albums so exciting. Touches like the atmospheric, flanged guitars of "Redundant" and the violin on "Hitchin'A Ride" and "Last Ride In," (courtesy of That Dog's Petra Haden) help to take the band in a new, more serious direction. Lest anyone fear that this expansion signals self-indulgence, the tight harmonies of "Scattered" and breakneck pace of "Platypus (I Hate You)" prove that, unlike most angry young men (especially those that happen to be millionaire celebrities), they've managed to hold on to every bit of the energy and rage that propelled them in the first place. Harbinger
Personnel: Paula Cole(vocals, piano, keyboards, percussion, whistle); Kevin Barry, Gerry Leonard (acoustic & electric guitars); Eileen Ivers, Laura Seaton, Mary Rowell (violin); Juliette Hafner (viola); Erik Friedlander (cello); Jon Dryden (piano); Paul Bushnell (bass); Jay Bellerose (drums, percussion); Mark Hutchins (tambourine, percussion, programming). Recorded at Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York. The first thing you feel is the voice: dark, earthy, ethereal. Paula Cole brings a lifetime of training and ambition to her first set of songs, HARBINGER, and from the haunted alienation of "Black Boots" to the incense-scented imagery of "Chiaroscuro," the singer transcends mere technical gifts to craft some of the most singular, deeply felt confessionals in all of pop. With her dusky contralto, and ringing upper register ellisions, she had all the formal tools to be a jazz diva, but by and by Cole realized that her true source of expression lay in the arty, progressive rock stylings of Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel--she had to be the singer and the song to discover her own true voice. An offspring of '60s baby boomers, Cole feels something of her parents' desperation and ambivalence in the troubling memories of "Happy Home," as children begat children and struggle to maintain a family edifice in the teeth of poverty and backwards glances of resignation. Producer Kevin Killen couches her moody tales of guilt ("She Can't Feel Anything Anymore"), isolation ("The Ladder") and sensuality ("Oh John") in spare, ambient textures that shade Cole's voice like dancing shadows. When he does allow the rhythm and other voices to rise and joust with her voice ("Garden Of Eden," "Revenge") it is with the understated ethnicity of Gabriel and U2 or a taut chamber-like verve, allowing Cole's complex emotions to bubble to the surface and stand naked in the light of revelation. If I Could Tell You
Solo performer: Yanni (various instruments). IF I COULD TELL YOU isn't a great departure for Yanni; it's simply a collection of instrumental pop tunes bound to please those already tuned in to his wavelength. "On Sacred Ground" opens with a synthesized wash of orchestral/choral sounds before moving into a syncopated groove, while "The Flame Within" is based around Yanni's piano, adding a little Greek flavoring in deference to the composer's background. Conversely, the ballad "With an Orchid" pursues a somewhat Asian feel, as Yanni's keyboards emulate both the Japanese koto and shakuhachi. "In Your Eyes" begins with the atmospheric sounds of a waterfall, segueing into a semi-classical piano meditation that eventually gives way to a more Yanni-like pop treatment. Things wind to a close with "Reason for Rainbows," which opens gently with what sounds like hammered dulcimer and gradually expands to encompass choral and orchestral tones once more, eventually fadingout with the quiet grace that typifies Yanni's musical approach. Ladies And Gentlemen (Live At Fillmore East, NYC 25-29 Apr 1971)
Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Ron "Pigpen" McKerman (vocals, harmonica, organ, percussion); PhilLesh (vocals, bass); Tom Constanten (organ); Bill Kreutzmann (drums). Engineers: Bob Matthews, Betty Cantor-Jackson. Recorded live at the Fillmore East, New York, New York in April 25-29, 1971. Includes liner notes by Blair Jackson. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Distilled from a weeklong series of concerts celebrating the shuttering of Bill Graham's counter-cultural mecca, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN showcases the original five-piece Grateful Dead operating at pretty much peak form. Former keyboardist and John Cage fan Tom Constanten, who lent the group considerable avant-cachet on ANTHEM OF THE SUN and AOXOMOXOA, guests here on a few songs, including wonderfully lysergic versions of "Dark Star" and "St. Stephen." LADIES AND GENTLEMEN is also a document of the band in transition to a more country and roots rock orientation; it's doubtful, for example, that they would have played songs like Marty Robbins' "El Paso" or (especially) Merle Haggard's "Sing Me Back Home" in the days of the Acid Tests. In any case, as always with the Dead, there are moments of complete musical transcendence (as well as, to be honest, moments where they're just sort of noodling around), but this set is worth having for both musical and historical reasons. Live At The Monterey Festival
Jefferson Airplane: Paul Kantner (vocals, guitar); Grace Slick, Marty Balin (vocals); Jorma Kaukonen (guitar); Jack Cassady (bass); Spencer Dryden (drums). Recorded live at the Monterey Pop Festival, Monterey, California in 1967. Includes liner notes by Mark Paytress. This is the uncut version of the Airplane's set at the legendary 1967 Monterey Pop Festival (the version on Rhino's MONTEREY POP box is minus three songs). The former underground sensations--"Someone to Love" had gone Top-10 a month before--were now full-fledged rock stars at the vanguard of a movement. Monterey was the band's first performance with, essentially, the whole pop world watching, and when the band hit the stage they were at full throttle, amping up the gentler folk-rock of their first album ("High Flying Bird," "Other Side of This Life") and then storming through the pop psychedelia of their just-released SURREALISTIC PILLOW ("She Has Funny Cars," "White Rabbit"). There's also a hint, in the concluding "Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil" (which the band hadn't yet recorded) of the darker and more apocalyptic music that lay ahead. SKU: 4119544
