It could be argued that the modern saxophonist makes some musical allusion to Lester Young--no matter how remote or indirect--in every solo rendered. On this release (1952), we hear the legendary "President of the saxophone" in great company. One can't get much more polished and refined than the Oscar Peterson Quartet (the album's title is incorrect; we do not hear a trio on this recording).
Indeed, Young is superbly accompanied by Peterson on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and J.C. Heard on drums. Highlights on WITH THE OSCAR PETERSON TRIO include the somber ballad version of "There Will Never Be Another You" and the lively "Tea for Two." Finally, on "(It Takes) Two to Tango" we hear Young singing: a very rare treat. His bawdy improvised lyrics and carefree delivery are quite charming, as are the number of very funny outtakes from the session itself.

Michael Bolton possesses numerous attributes inherent to a great recording artist--a grandiose voice able to be at once overwhelming and gentle, the vision to convey powerful emotional details with simple vocal inflections, the ability to set his songs in precise musical colors. But what is probably his most overlooked quality is also his greatest strength: The man is a tunesmith non-pareil. Not only is he a powerful songwriter in his own right (having written for everyone from Barbra Streisand to Kiss), but his knowledge and choice of cover songs borders on the omniscient. Recorded and released relatively late in his career, DOC AT THE RADAR STATION finds Beefheart in characteristically fine, freakish and musically-accelerated form. Echoing the freneticism and jump-cut aesthetic of some of his earlier work, the album is propelled by wiry guitar work, explosive, syncopated drumming and warped, raunchy blues riffs all calibrated by highly skilled musicians to sound as close to chaos as possible.
Beefheart's loveable gravely vocals (which sound like they belong to a deranged, boozed-up lecher), strain into ecstasy on "Sue Egypt," tumble pell-mell through "Run Paint Run Run," and rollick over the humps of Sheriff of Hong Kong." His lyrics veer from poetry to psycho-babble, as in "Making Love To A Vampire With A Monkey On My Knee") featuring the good Captain's poignant lyrical facility ("Her neck broke open and glistened in the dew"). As always, the music is an amalgam of neck-breaking changes, comic and high-brow sensibilities and melodies which have been broken, spliced and reconstituted but manage to remain, somehow, accessible.

This three-CD set chronicles Nelson's 18-year stay at Columbia records, during which he was one of country music's most consistent hit makers. Thirteen number one hits are interspersed among the 60 songs included here, along with numerous other top tens and some lesser-known favorites. The box set is organized thematically: the first disc covers Willie's first eight years at Columbia and contains many of the songs that appear on GREATEST HITS (AND SOME THAT WILL BE). The second disc features 20 Nelson duets with such partners as Bob Dylan, George Jones, Dolly Parton, Julio Iglesias, and Ray Charles. Third outing EVE-OLUTION shows no signs of letting up. Produced by such hot studio rats as Swizz Beatz and Irv Gotti, and featuring high-profile guests like Snoop Dogg, Alicia Keys, and Jadakiss, this is obviouslyan elaborate, big-budget affair. However, Eve's reputation was made in large part on her ability to avoid vacuous lifestyle trappings in favor of an honest, proud representation of modern urban womanhood. Finland's instrumental quartet Laika and The Cosmonauts communicate in the international language of surf music. However, they approach this kind of music in the same way that The Ventures did in their career, which long outlived the heyday of surf. INSTRUMENTS OF TERROR opens with the theme from the television program "Mission Impossible." The band also steps into the world of film music with Mancini's "Experiment in Terror"; "Psyko," a medley of Bernard Hermann's PSYCHO and VERTIGO themes; and the theme from the surf movie ENDLESS SUMMER. What the band demonstrates in its writing is how effectively this music can be evocative of a place. Their crisply delineated melodies shimmer against the rhythmic backdrop in a manner that recalls the sunsets, panoramas, and endless days and nights of life near the Arctic Circle.

Cecil Taylor was among the principal figures that knocked the jazz world on its collective ear in the late 1950s andearly '60s. Along with the creative efforts of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Albert Ayler, Talyor tested, shocked, and finally revolutionized the jazz world with his spiky, percussive, unfettered approach to the piano and improvisation. With his sound informed by pre-bop eras of jazz (Monk, Ellington, even Dave Brubeck) as well as contemporary classical music, Taylor blazed new directions that influenced jazz--and beyond--for decades to come.
JUMPIN' PUNKINS is a 1961 session previously available only in Japan, and captures Taylor with players that span the jazz spectrum. Where else can one hear Clark Terry, Steve Lacy, and Archie Shepp having a fine old time on classic gems like Duke Ellington's "Things Ain't What They Used To Be" and the title tune? The feeling here is almost one of a jam session: loose-limbed, easy-going and tuneful--this is Taylor at his most accessible yet without a hint of compromise. "I Forgot" is the one Taylor original here, and it's a dark, harrowing "ballad" featuring some Ben Webster-ish playing from Shepp.

More post-modern irony a-go-go, sliced and diced from the detritus of late '60s and early '70s pop culture by Japan's swingingest kitsch merchants. "Room With a View," for example, with its skittering harpsichord and strings and la-la choruses, could be a song JimmyWebb forgot to give to the Fifth Dimension, or perhaps the theme from some alternate universe THAT GIRL tv sitcom.
Similarly, the charming flutes and churning early '70s bass and drums that undergird "La Guerre Est Finie" make the whole thing sound like music you'd expect to hear in a hazily photographed dialogue-less montage from a period romantic comedy. Oddly, several of the songs are preceded by spoken word intros sampled from Kermit Schafer's old PARDON MY BLOOPER comedy albums. Go figure--these must have been big in Japan, too.

By its second release, 1972's RIO GRANDE MUD, ZZ Top was honing the tough blues rock hybrid that would make it a certified U.S. arena headliner by the mid-70's. While the album didn't spawn the big radio hits of its later releases such as "La Grange" and "Tush," RIO GRANDE MUD was another incredibly consistent and inspired ZZ Top classic.
Again, Billy Gibbons' guitar work is outstanding throughout, helping to spearhead such great cuts as the rugged opener "Francine," the gritty attitude of "Just Got Paid," the hyperactive "Ko Ko Blue," and one of the band's most melodic compositions up until this point, "Chevrolet." During the 60s Carole King was renowned for composing a succession of classic pop songs. Santana's initial trio of albums still sound incredibly alive and exciting. ABRAXAS is the best of the three as it imbues the Latin fusion of their debut with smooth edges. The relaxed opening elegantly slips into "Black Magic Woman," the finest ever interpretation of a Peter Green song. "Se A Cabo," "El Nicoya" and the memorable "Oye Como Va" give us the quota of Latin rock. The album's star turn is the beautifully erotic "Samba Pa Ti," which features a superb guitar solo that oozes the sexuality blatantly depicted by the Mati cover illustration.

SO consolidated Gabriel's reputation as an original and exciting composer, capable of projecting sophisticated lyrics on accessible melodies. 'Sledgehammer' was a massive hit (number one in the USA), as was 'Don't Give Up', with Kate Bush's vocals adding extra pathos. 'This Is The Picture' clearly shows the slightly surreal influence of co-writer Laurie Anderson, and the whole is given flight by Daniel Lanois' impeccable production. The towering achievement, however, is 'Mercy Street', a sparely orchestrated and perfectly constructed tribute to the late poet Anne Sexton.

This is the High Llamas' masterpiece. GIDEON GAYE is more overtly Brian Wilson-inspired than 1996's HAWAII. The gorgeous "The Goat Looks On" even bears a marked similarity to PET SOUNDS' "Let's Go Away For A While." But the album also bears the influence of psychedelic-era Beatles, the unsettling Gallic pop of Serge Gainsbourg, pure AM-radio bubblegum, Stereolab's organ drones, and, on the 14-minute "Track Goes By," jazz-tinged explorations.
While HAWAII might hang together better as an entire album, the top-caliber songwriting on GIDEON GAYE-from the gentle, cello-powered sway of "Giddy And Gay" and the Steely Dan-like "Checking In, Checking Out" to the near-orchestral "The Dutchman"-is some of singer/songwriter Sean O'Hagan's finest work. These songs finally give the album an edge over its successor. GIDEON GAYE is one of the very best albums of the '90s.

On his fourth release as Plastikman, Richie Hawtin hones his ambient house experiments to a shimmering, hallucinatory perfection. A veteran of the Detroit techno underground, Hawtin has taken the DJ-based dancefloor aesthetic of his background and merged it with high-minded touches of minimalist composition, atmospheric texturesand abstract tonal shadings. 1994's MUSIK is one of Hawtin's finest offerings. The nervous anthropomorphic creak of "Kriket," the aggressive, acid house flashes of "Fuk," the bottom end pulse of "Ethnik," and the insistent rhythmic palette of "Goo" are only a few examples of Hawtin's evocative, entrancing mix-magic. In all, this is a startlingly unique, standout electronica release.
