President Plays With The Oscar Peterson Trio, The [Remastered]
Full title: Lester Young With The Oscar Peterson Trio. Personnel: Lester Young (vocals, tenor saxophone); Oscar Peterson (piano); Barney Kessel (guitar); Ray Brown (bass); J. C. Heard (drums). Recorded in New York, New York in November 1952. Includes liner notes by Douglas Henry Daniels. It could be argued that the modern saxophonist makes some musical allusion to Lester Young--no matter how remote or indirect--in every solo rendered. On this release (1952), we hear the legendary "President of the saxophone" in great company. One can't get much more polished and refined than the Oscar Peterson Quartet (the album's title is incorrect; we do not hear a trio on this recording). Indeed, Young is superbly accompanied by Peterson on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and J.C. Heard on drums. Highlights on WITH THE OSCAR PETERSON TRIO include the somber ballad version of "There Will Never Be Another You" and the lively "Tea for Two." Finally, on "(It Takes) Two to Tango" we hear Young singing: a very rare treat. His bawdy improvised lyrics and carefree delivery are quite charming, as are the number of very funny outtakes from the session itself. SKU: 4125535

Greatest Hits 1985-1995
Personnel includes: Michael Bolton (vocals); Dann Huff (guitar); Tommy Sims (guitar, keyboards, bass, programming); Jan Mullaney (keyboards); Walter Afanasieff (keyboards, Hammond B-3 organ, synthesizer, programming); Chris McHugh (drums); Danny Duncan, Gary Cirimelli (programming); Robert John "Mutt" Lange, Brenda Braxton, Victor Trent Cook, Pattie Darcy Jones, Larry Batista, Portia Griffin, Pat Hawk, Vann Johnson, Janis Liebhart, Claytoven Richardson, Philip Ingram, Jim Gilstrap, Rose Stone, Alex Brown, Bob Carlyle, Kim Fleming, Vicki Hampton, Angelo Petrucci, Veronica Petrucci, Chris Rodriguez, Micah Wilshire, Lisa Befill, Michael Black, Lisa Cochran, Tabitha Fair, Chris Harris, Robert White Johnson, Lisa Keith, Kim Keyes, Robin Johnson, Michael Mellett, Cindy Morgan, Nicol Smith (background vocals). Producers include: Keith Diamond, Johnathan Cain, Peter Bunetta, Rick Chundacoff, Michael Omartian. Engineers include: Jan Mullaney, Steve Milo, Dana Jon Chappelle. Recorded at Passion Studios, Connecticut; Wally World, California; The Record Plant, Hollywood, California; The Dugout, Nashville, Tennessee; Cherokee Studios, Los Angeles, California. Michael Bolton possesses numerous attributes inherent to a great recording artist--a grandiose voice able to be at once overwhelming and gentle, the vision to convey powerful emotional details with simple vocal inflections, the ability to set his songs in precise musical colors. But what is probably his most overlooked quality is also his greatest strength: The man is a tunesmith non-pareil. Not only is he a powerful songwriter in his own right (having written for everyone from Barbra Streisand to Kiss), but his knowledge and choice of cover songs borders on the omniscient. And they all become hits--the proof is on GREATEST HITS 1985-1995. It was Bolton's renditions of soul classics that first gained him an audience. Zelma Redding, widow of the legendary Otis Redding, called Bolton's chart-topping take on "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay" her "all-time favorite version," and his interpretation of "Georgia On My Mind" personifies the timeless elegance of modern pop. Yet his own compositions shine just as brightly: "Soul Provider" glides with a smoky, saloon feel, "How Can We Be Lovers" deftly communicates the complexities of relationships, and "Steel Bars" (co-written with Bob Dylan) moves with classic Bryan Adams-ish abandon. GREATEST HITS also shows off Bolton's knack for nurturing hits out of current songwriters, and finding nuggets ripe for renewing. Among the latter is the remake of Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne's "A Love So Beautiful," a sweeping ballad on which Bolton pays homage to Orbison's unique tenor. Among the former are "When I'm Back On My Feet Again," "Time, LoveAnd Tenderness" and "The River"--all by Diane Warren, all modern-day epics of the heart that place the fleeting, indescribable moments of love (and love lost) into exquisitely poetic pop statements. Doc At The Radar Station
Personnel: Don"Captain Beefheart" Van Vliet (vocals, bass clarinet, harmonica, soprano saxophone, Chinese gongs); John "Drumbo" French (guitar, slide guitar, marimba, bass, drums); Jeff Morris Tepper (slide guitar, guitar); Gary Lucas (guitar, French horn); Bruce Lambourne Fowler (trombone); Eric Drew Feldman (piano, electric piano, Mellotron, synthesizer, bass); Robert Arthur Williams (drums). Recorded at Sound Castle Recording Studios, Los Angeles, California. Recorded and released relatively late in his career, DOC AT THE RADAR STATION finds Beefheart in characteristically fine, freakish and musically-accelerated form. Echoing the freneticism and jump-cut aesthetic of some of his earlier work, the album is propelled by wiry guitar work, explosive, syncopated drumming and warped, raunchy blues riffs all calibrated by highly skilled musicians to sound as close to chaos as possible. Beefheart's loveable gravely vocals (which sound like they belong to a deranged, boozed-up lecher), strain into ecstasy on "Sue Egypt," tumble pell-mell through "Run Paint Run Run," and rollick over the humps of Sheriff of Hong Kong." His lyrics veer from poetry to psycho-babble, as in "Making Love To A Vampire With A Monkey On My Knee") featuring the good Captain's poignant lyrical facility ("Her neck broke open and glistened in the dew"). As always, the music is an amalgam of neck-breaking changes, comic and high-brow sensibilities and melodies which have been broken, spliced and reconstituted but manage to remain, somehow, accessible. Producers include: Willie Nelson, Booker T. Jones, Chips Moman, Fred Foster, Billy Sherrill. Compilation producer: Lawrence Cohn. Includes liner notes by John T. Davis. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This three-CD set chronicles Nelson's 18-year stay at Columbia records, during which he was one of country music's most consistent hit makers. Thirteen number one hits are interspersed among the 60 songs included here, along with numerous other top tens and some lesser-known favorites. The box set is organized thematically: the first disc covers Willie's first eight years at Columbia and contains many of the songs that appear on GREATEST HITS (AND SOME THAT WILL BE). The second disc features 20 Nelson duets with such partners as Bob Dylan, George Jones, Dolly Parton, Julio Iglesias, and Ray Charles. Columbia gave Willie the freedom to record duet albums some of his heroes, and those albums are well-represented on tracks featuring Ray Price, Faron Young, Hank Snow, and Webb Pierce. The third disc chronicles Nelson's final decade with the label, which began with Nelson cultivating a middle-of-the-road sound and concluded with the critically praised ACROSS THE BORDERLINE album. The booklet in this handsomely packaged set includes a generous helping of photographs, thorough recording credits, and many tributes from Willie's contemporaries. REVOLUTIONS IN TIME is a solid overview of Nelson's peak commercial period. SKU: 1068000

Eve-Olution [PA]
Personnel includes: Eve, Truth Hurts, Alicia Keys, Mashonda, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Jadakiss, Styles Of The Lox. Producers: Swizz Beatz, Dr. Dre, Irv Gotti, 7, Teflon, Bink, Trackmasters. "Satisfaction" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Female Rap Solo Performance. With the help of the Ruff Ryders crew, Philadelphia rapper EVE rocked the hip-hop world straight out of the gate with her debut album and kept up the momentum with follow-up release SCORPION. Third outing EVE-OLUTION shows no signs of letting up. Produced by such hot studio rats as Swizz Beatz and Irv Gotti, and featuring high-profile guests like Snoop Dogg, Alicia Keys, and Jadakiss, this is obviouslyan elaborate, big-budget affair. However, Eve's reputation was made in large part on her ability to avoid vacuous lifestyle trappings in favor of an honest, proud representation of modern urban womanhood. That ethos stands her in good stead here. While such tracks as "Gangsta Lovin'" don't exactly bespeak a complex sociological aesthetic, EVE-OLUTION as a whole presents Eve as entirely more down-to-earth and just plain believable than many of her peers. Instruments Of Terror
Laika And The Cosmonauts: Matti Pitsinki (guitar, organ); MikkoLankinen (guitar); Tom Nyman (bass); Janne Haavisto (drums). Producers: Janne Haavisto, Laika & The Cosmonauts. Finland's instrumental quartet Laika and The Cosmonauts communicate in the international language of surf music. However, they approach this kind of music in the same way that The Ventures did in their career, which long outlived the heyday of surf. Laika and The Cosmonauts eschew the earliest template of the genre and embrace the range of rock instrumental styles that followed in surf's wake. INSTRUMENTS OF TERROR opens with the theme from the television program "Mission Impossible." The band also steps into the world of film music with Mancini's "Experiment in Terror"; "Psyko," a medley of Bernard Hermann's PSYCHO and VERTIGO themes; and the theme from the surf movie ENDLESS SUMMER. What the band demonstrates in its writing is how effectively this music can be evocative of a place. Their crisply delineated melodies shimmer against the rhythmic backdrop in a manner that recalls the sunsets, panoramas, and endless days and nights of life near the Arctic Circle. SKU: 1009368

Place In The Sun, A
Personnel: Tim McGraw (vocals); Larry Byrom, Biff Watson (acoustic guitar); Brent Mason, Michael Landau, B. James Lowry, John D. Willis, Mike Durham (electric guitar); Paul Franklin, Dan Dugmore (steel guitar); Aubrey Haynie, Glen Duncan (fiddle); Steve Nathan (keyboards); Glenn Worf, Mike Brignardello (bass); Lonnie Wilson (drums); Curtis Wright, Curtis Young, Chris Rodriguez, Kim Carnes, Greg Barnhill, Patty Loveless, Kim Parent (background vocals); The Nashville String Machine. Producers: Byron Gallimore, James Stroud, Tim McGraw. Engineers include: Julian King, Dennis Davis, Erik Lutkins. Principally recorded at Ocean Way, Nashville, Tennessee. "Please Remember Me" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. Tim McCraw won the 2000 CMA Award for Male Vocalist Of The Year. "My Best Friend" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. With A PLACE IN THE SUN, Tim McGraw, the son of legendary baseball player Tug McGraw, has hit a musical home run. The follow-up to his insanely successful EVERYWHERE, A PLACE IN THE SUN contains McGraw's signature mix of traditional country, humor, romance and rowdiness. McGraw has a real talent for choosing well-crafted, slightly off-kilter songs (from top Nashville talents like Walt Alridge, Phil Vassar, Hillary Kanter and Mark Nesler), and delivering them so convincingly that you can almost believe he's the one who wrote them. The 15 tracks range from the hard country of "She'll Have You Back" (the punch line is "...back to drinking in no time") to the heartfelt romance of "My Best Friend" to the sweeping grandeur of "Please Remember Me" (featuring harmonies by Patty Loveless). Highlights include "The Trouble With Never," the boisterous "Something Like That" and "My Next Thirty Years," a fantastic song about a man saying good-bye to his youth while he prepares, with some trepidation, to face the second half of his life. Fans may be disappointed to find there's no duet with McGraw's wife, Faith Hill. However, even with thelack of that crowd-pleasing element, A PLACE IN THE SUN truly shines. SKU: 1000418

Jumpin' Punkins
Personnel: Cecil Taylor (piano); Steve Lacy (soprano saxophone); Archie Shepp (tenor saxophone); Charles Davis (baritone saxophone); Clark Terry (trumpet); Roswell Rudd (trombone); Buell Neidlinger (bass); Billy Higgins, Dennis Charles (drums). Recorded at Nola Penthouse Studios, New York, New York on January 6 & 10, 1961. Includes liner notes by Barry McRae. Cecil Taylor was among the principal figures that knocked the jazz world on its collective ear in the late 1950s andearly '60s. Along with the creative efforts of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Albert Ayler, Talyor tested, shocked, and finally revolutionized the jazz world with his spiky, percussive, unfettered approach to the piano and improvisation. With his sound informed by pre-bop eras of jazz (Monk, Ellington, even Dave Brubeck) as well as contemporary classical music, Taylor blazed new directions that influenced jazz--and beyond--for decades to come. JUMPIN' PUNKINS is a 1961 session previously available only in Japan, and captures Taylor with players that span the jazz spectrum. Where else can one hear Clark Terry, Steve Lacy, and Archie Shepp having a fine old time on classic gems like Duke Ellington's "Things Ain't What They Used To Be" and the title tune? The feeling here is almost one of a jam session: loose-limbed, easy-going and tuneful--this is Taylor at his most accessible yet without a hint of compromise. "I Forgot" is the one Taylor original here, and it's a dark, harrowing "ballad" featuring some Ben Webster-ish playing from Shepp. SKU: 1011976

Producers: Konishi Yasuhara, Nomiya Maki. Engineers: Hirose Osamu, Takenaka Akihiko, Aoyagi Nobuyuki. More post-modern irony a-go-go, sliced and diced from the detritus of late '60s and early '70s pop culture by Japan's swingingest kitsch merchants. "Room With a View," for example, with its skittering harpsichord and strings and la-la choruses, could be a song JimmyWebb forgot to give to the Fifth Dimension, or perhaps the theme from some alternate universe THAT GIRL tv sitcom. Similarly, the charming flutes and churning early '70s bass and drums that undergird "La Guerre Est Finie" make the whole thing sound like music you'd expect to hear in a hazily photographed dialogue-less montage from a period romantic comedy. Oddly, several of the songs are preceded by spoken word intros sampled from Kermit Schafer's old PARDON MY BLOOPER comedy albums. Go figure--these must have been big in Japan, too. SKU: 1045078

Rio Grande Mud
ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); FrankBeard (drums). Also available as part of the ZZ Top 6 Pack. All tracks have been digitally remastered. By its second release, 1972's RIO GRANDE MUD, ZZ Top was honing the tough blues rock hybrid that would make it a certified U.S. arena headliner by the mid-70's. While the album didn't spawn the big radio hits of its later releases such as "La Grange" and "Tush," RIO GRANDE MUD was another incredibly consistent and inspired ZZ Top classic. Again, Billy Gibbons' guitar work is outstanding throughout, helping to spearhead such great cuts as the rugged opener "Francine," the gritty attitude of "Just Got Paid," the hyperactive "Ko Ko Blue," and one of the band's most melodic compositions up until this point, "Chevrolet." RIO GRANDE MUD remains one of ZZ Top's most underrated recordings. SKU: 5048988

Tapestry [Remastered]
This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Personnel: Carole King (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards); James Taylor (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar (guitar, congas); Barry Socher (violin); DavidCampbell (viola); Terry King (cello); Curtis Amy (flute, soprano, tenor & baritone saxophones); Ralph Schuckett (electric piano); Charles Larkey (acoustic & electric basses); Perry Steinberg (acoustic bass); Joel O'Brien, Russ Kunkel (drums); Joni Mitchell, Merry Clayton, Julia Tillman (background vocals). Producer: Lou Adler. Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Originally released on Ode (PE 34946). Includes liner notes by James Taylor. During the 60s Carole King was renowned for composing a succession of classic pop songs. A low-key recording career blossomed with the release of this album which successfully married this skill with the contemporary singer-songwriter movement. TAPESTRY is comprised of self-penned material and collaborations with either ex-husband Gerry Goffin or lyricist Toni Stern. King's unfussy vocal style enhances the simply stated yet astute material and in "It's Too Late" the singer expresses the breakdown of a relationship with percipient incisiveness. Such skill ensures the album's lasting popularity. SKU: 5051456

Finally
This is an enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes:Shaquana Elam, Ted Riley, Janet Jackson, S. Gary, 8th Ave.; Hezekiah Walker, Love Fellowship Tabernacle (vocals); Black, Street, Queen Pen, Ja Rule, Sauce Money, Beanie Siegal, Eve (rap vocals); Stevie Wonder (harmonica); Mike Phillips (saxophone). Producers: Teddy Riley, Eric Williams, Warren Campbell. Engineers: George Mayers, Julian McBrowne, Frantz Verna. Recorded at Future Recording Studios, Virginia Beach, Virginia and Boulevard Studios, Carson, California. With their third change in lineup, Blackstreet delivers their third release two years and change after the multi-platinum success of ANOTHER LEVEL. A new lead singer gives Blackstreet a somewhat different sound, but as always Teddy Riley, still at the helm of the Blackstreet project, once again produces yet another smash-filled R&B offering. FINALLY showcases the quartet's vocal strength on songs like "Misery," and other songs such as "Think About You" provide more of that familiar Blackstreet flavor. "Drama," a love feud between a couple about to break up, features the vocal harmonies of Mary J. Blige, while "In A Rush" highlights the harmonica talent of Stevie Wonder. With a combination of club-bangers ("Girlfriend/Boyfriend") and love songs ("Black & White"), FINALLY helps balance the scales of R&B music. SKU: 5064947

Last Tour On Earth, The
Also available with GOD IS IN THE TV video as THE ULTIMATE MARILYN MANSON GIFT SET. Marilyn Manson: Marilyn Manson (vocals); John (guitar); M.W. Gacy (keyboards, synthesizer); Twiggy Ramirez (bass); Ginger Fish (drums). "Astonishing Panorama Of The Endtimes" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Every generation needs an artist who pushes the envelope and stretches the limits of acceptability to the extreme and beyond. Take the rebellious spirit of punk and the shocking theatrics of glam rock and it would only begin to explain Marilyn Manson. The band's short history is steeped in infamy. The rumors, near-riots, banning ofconcerts, and outrageous stage antics all culminate on THE LAST TOUR ON EARTH, the band's first live album. Marilyn Manson's version of "Sweet Dreams," which made the band bastard darlings of MTV and radio, gets an explosive reaction from the live audience. Manson's critique of modern-day shallowness comes to life in "The Dope Show." In his introduction before "I Don't Like the Drugs (But the Drugs Like Me)," Marilyn Manson sounds eerily like Jim Morrison as he describes a previous night's "dream." The most chilling moment of THE LAST TOUR ON EARTH is during "Irresponsible Hate Anthem" as Manson leads the audience in a mantra of, "we hate love, we love hate." Even as protesters demonstrate outside of the concert venue, Manson has the crowd chanting in defiance against them. His fearless resistance against his nay-sayers defines the true essence that makes him a star. SKU: 1043481

Abraxas (Limited Edition) [SACD]
Available on Mini Disc on Columbia (30130). NOTES: Also available in a 3-pack with SANTANA (1st LP) and SANTANA (3rd LP). Santana: Carlos Santana (vocals, guitar); Gregg Rolie(vocals, keyboards); Dave Brown (bass); Mike Shrieve (drums); Jose Areas (timbales, congas); Mike Carabello (congas). Additional personnel: Rico Reyes (vocals, percussion); Alberto Gianquinto (piano). Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Recorded at Wally Heider Studio, San Francisco and Pacific Recording, San Mateo, California, and live at The Royal Albert Hall, London, England on April 18, 1970. Includes liner notes by Ben Fong-Torres. Santana's initial trio of albums still sound incredibly alive and exciting. ABRAXAS is the best of the three as it imbues the Latin fusion of their debut with smooth edges. The relaxed opening elegantly slips into "Black Magic Woman," the finest ever interpretation of a Peter Green song. "Se A Cabo," "El Nicoya" and the memorable "Oye Como Va" give us the quota of Latin rock. The album's star turn is the beautifully erotic "Samba Pa Ti," which features a superb guitar solo that oozes the sexuality blatantly depicted by the Mati cover illustration. SKU: 6523054

So [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Peter Gabriel (vocals, keyboards); Kate Bush, Laurie Anderson, Youssou N'Dour (vocals); David Rhodes (guitar, background vocals); Daniel Lanois (guitar, tambourine); Nile Rodgers (guitar); L. Shankar (violin); Mark Rivera (alto, tenor & baritone saxophones); Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Don Mikelsen (trombone); Richard Tee (piano); Simon Clark (Hammond B3 organ, synthesizer, bass); Tony Levin (bass, Chapman stick); Larry Klein, Bill Laswell (bass); Manu Katche (drums, talkingdrums); Jerry Marotta, Stewart Copeland (drums); Chris Hughes (programming); Djalma Correa (surdu, congas, triangle); Jimm Kerr (background vocals). Engineers: Kevin Killen, Daniel Lanois, David Bottrill. Recorded at Ascombe Studios, Bath, England between Feruary & December 1985. SO consolidated Gabriel's reputation as an original and exciting composer, capable of projecting sophisticated lyrics on accessible melodies. 'Sledgehammer' was a massive hit (number one in the USA), as was 'Don't Give Up', with Kate Bush's vocals adding extra pathos. 'This Is The Picture' clearly shows the slightly surreal influence of co-writer Laurie Anderson, and the whole is given flight by Daniel Lanois' impeccable production. The towering achievement, however, is 'Mercy Street', a sparely orchestrated and perfectly constructed tribute to the late poet Anne Sexton. SKU: 1076265

Gideon Gaye
The High Llamas: Sean O'Hagan (vocals, guitar, piano, vox organ, glockenspiel, Moog); Marcus Holdaway (cello, piano, harpsichord, voxorgan, vibraphone, background vocals); John Fell (bass); Rob Allum (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Anne Woods (violin); Jocelyn Pook (viola); Marcel Corientes (flute). Recorded at The Stone Room, West London, England in Winter 1993. This is the High Llamas' masterpiece. GIDEON GAYE is more overtly Brian Wilson-inspired than 1996's HAWAII. The gorgeous "The Goat Looks On" even bears a marked similarity to PET SOUNDS' "Let's Go Away For A While." But the album also bears the influence of psychedelic-era Beatles, the unsettling Gallic pop of Serge Gainsbourg, pure AM-radio bubblegum, Stereolab's organ drones, and, on the 14-minute "Track Goes By," jazz-tinged explorations. While HAWAII might hang together better as an entire album, the top-caliber songwriting on GIDEON GAYE-from the gentle, cello-powered sway of "Giddy And Gay" and the Steely Dan-like "Checking In, Checking Out" to the near-orchestral "The Dutchman"-is some of singer/songwriter Sean O'Hagan's finest work. These songs finally give the album an edge over its successor. GIDEON GAYE is one of the very best albums of the '90s. SKU: 1012133

Plastikman: Richie Hawtin. On his fourth release as Plastikman, Richie Hawtin hones his ambient house experiments to a shimmering, hallucinatory perfection. A veteran of the Detroit techno underground, Hawtin has taken the DJ-based dancefloor aesthetic of his background and merged it with high-minded touches of minimalist composition, atmospheric texturesand abstract tonal shadings. 1994's MUSIK is one of Hawtin's finest offerings. The nervous anthropomorphic creak of "Kriket," the aggressive, acid house flashes of "Fuk," the bottom end pulse of "Ethnik," and the insistent rhythmic palette of "Goo" are only a few examples of Hawtin's evocative, entrancing mix-magic. In all, this is a startlingly unique, standout electronica release. SKU: 1011656
