Door, The
Personnel includes: Keb' Mo' (vocals, guitar); Scarlet Rivera (violin); Greg Phillinganes (keyboards); Reggie McBride (bass); Steve Jordan, Jim Keltner (drums). Engineers: Mark Johnson, Hans Leibert, Dave O'Donnell. Recorded at Groove Masters, Santa Monica, California; Stu Stu Studio, Marina Del Rey, California; The Secret Studio and Right Track Recording, New York, New York. THE DOOR was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. For his fourth album, California native Keb' Mo' continues down his same creative path, weaving traditional country blues with more contemporary pop sounds. Content to leave guitar histrionics to young bucks like Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, the former Kevin Moore instead uses his skill with a National Steel guitar to give his material a texture like smooth sippin' whiskey. Keb' Mo's most endearing quality is a laid-back persona that fits comfortably like a worn pair of jeans. This molasses-slow delivery works particularly well on the uplifting title track of spiritual renewal, and the laconic "It'sAll Coming Back," which features jazzy guitar chords and George Benson-like scatting. He demonstrates a sure hand in covering a wide range of human emotion and social situations, including the sad scenarios of class barriers ("Anyway") and poignant heartbreak ("Come On Back"). Elsewhere, he shows off his sassy side with the slyly ribald "Gimme What You Got," complete with funky licks buoyed by bouncy brass and string arrangements, in addition to a weird, Eurodisco-like cover of Elmore James' "It Hurts Me Too," dripping with slide guitar. Killing Is My Business And Business Is Good
Full title: Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good! Megadeth: Dave Mustaine (vocals, guitar, piano); Chris Poland (guitar); David Ellefson (bass, background vocals); Gar Samuelson (drums, timpani). Producers: Dave Mustaine, Karat Faye. Recorded at Indigo Ranch Studios, Malibu, California and Crystal Sound Labs, Hollywood, California in December 1984 & January 1985. Includes liner notes by Dave Mustaine, Scott Ian, and David Ellefson. Digitally remastered by Tom Baker (Precision Mastering). After guitarist Dave Mustaine was booted out of Metallica in 1983, he immediately returned home to San Francisco and formed Megadeth. The new outfit was instantly compared to Mustaine's former band, and the comparisons haven't subsided since. Whereas both outfits shared such musical elements as muted guitar riffs and speedy rhythms, Megadeth's first album seemed to be more influenced by punk and hardcore. KILLING IS MY BUSINESS AND BUSINESS IS GOOD also saw Mustaine's debuting his lead-vocal skills. Mustaine must have had a lot of pent-up anger to express, since KILLING is simply explosive from beginning to end. The brutal titletrack lyrically deals with a sniper who revels in hunting down his unsuspecting prey. Nancy Sinatra's hit "These Boots are Made For Walking" is redone as a blinding speed metal ditty. Other highlights include the album opening "Last Rites/Loved to Death" and the pro-heavy metal "Rattlehead." The album-closing "Mechanix" had previously surfaced-as "The Four Horsemen," with different lyrics-on Metallica's debut KILL 'EM ALL. While not as exceptional as Megadeth's subsequent albums, KILLING proves that Mustaine is a survivor. SKU: 1071993

Anthem [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Less Than Jake: Chris (vocals, guitar); Roger (vocals, bass); JR (saxophone); Buddy (trombone); Vinnie (drums). Additional personnel: Jamie Muhoberac (keyboards); Luis Conte (percussion); Heather Tabor (background vocals). Recorded at Piety Street Recording, New Orleans, Louisiana and Morning View Studio, Malibu, California between October and December 2002. Still soldiering on in 2003 after spending the prior decade being overlooked by the commercial masses during the pop-punk revolution, Less Than Jake hits the ground running with ANTHEM and its collection of songs touching on the insecurity and social woes afflicting the band's core teen audience. When this Florida quintet isn't bashing out songs about a girl on the verge of a nervous breakdown ("She's Gonna Break Soon") or lacking faith in yourself ("The Science of Selling Yourself Short") they're keeping the mood suitably bleak by singing about lacking direction in life ("The Upwards War and the Down Turned Cycle"). Amid all this doom-and-gloom, horn players Buddy and JRgive the proceedings a peppy edge with a one-two punch that accentuates Less Than Jake's ska influences, particularly on the caffeinated "Plastic Cup Politics" and Mighty Mighty Bosstones-flavored "Look What Happened." Even though Less Than Jake take an unusually serious approach towards ANTHEM, this former Bon Jovi opening act manages to inject some levity by including a bonus cover of "Surrender" and doing Cheap Trick proud. Her Wallpaper Reverie
The Apples In Stereo includes: Robert Schneider. Sometimes it seems as if the entire Elephant 6 collective is hell bent on re-creating the soundtrack to "Yellow Submarine." Songwriting machine Robert Schneider and his band of merry pranksters, The Apples In Stereo, come as close as anyone ever has in this fuzzy, buzzy, fun-trick-noisemaker of a disc. The Apples' sunshine-y and singable pop is as influenced by late 60's Beach Boys as it is by The Beatles. It's dizzy, pretty and so aggressively cute in fact, that your pre-schooler will take a shine to it (except for the prominent use of the "F" word on"Y2K"). There's the welcome addition of drummer Hilarie Sidney's incredibly catchy tune, "Questions And Answers." And, of course, there's the E6 mandatory synthesizer free-for-all. The whole package is tied together with a clever recurring theme, plucked out on a toy piano. SKU: 1023679

Big Picture, The
Personnel: Elton John (vocals, piano, organ); Davey Johnstone, John Jorgenson (guitar); Paul Carrack (organ); Matthew Vaughan (keyboards, percussion); Guy Babylon(keyboards); Bob Birch (bass); Charlie Morgan (drums, percussion); Paul Clarvis (tablas); Carol Kenyon, Jackie Rawe (background vocals); East London Gospel Choir, Angel Voices Choir. Recorded at Townhouse Studios, London, England. As true as the Rolling Stones have remained to their blues beat, Elton John, who's been around nearly as long, has stayed true to his pop muse; and perhaps more than the Stones, he's retained his pop craft. THE BIG PICTURE is a simple album at heart, a collection of melancholy love songs beefed up with million-dollar pop arrangements and rocked up every now and then with Davey Johnstone's electric guitar. The sentiments are basic enough: in "The End Will Come," he's ready to swear there ain't no mountain high enough to stop his love, while in "Love's Got A Lot To Answer For," he's ready to admit that no matter how he climbs there's just going to be another mountain around the bend. Lyricist Bernie Taupin provides these basics, and John adds the incredible melodic weight that the best of these songs have. "Long Way From Happiness" is haunting blue-eyed soul; "The End Will Come" is a true anthem that showcases a Stevie Wonder-like conviction in the power of music to overcome reality. "If The River Can Bend" serves as teasing proof that the rock flame behind such early John showstoppers as "Burn Down the Mission" is far from out. SKU: 1004744

Ten New Songs
Personnel: Leonard Cohen (vocals); Sharon Robinson (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer, programming); Bob Metzger (guitar). The nine-year gap separating THE FUTURE and TEN NEW SONGS was by far the longest in Leonard Cohen's recording career. The surprising thing is that after all that interim time spent on a mountain in Zen meditation (no, really)the tone and outlook of Cohen's work seems hardly altered. Most importantly, his masterful songwriting acumen did not diminish one iota. If anything, Cohen's poetic prowess seems sharper, more focused and concise on 10 NEW SONGS. Sonically, the album continues Cohen's fascination with synthesizers, as first heard on 1988's I'M YOUR MAN. For his first album of the 21st century, he's embraced the digital world fully; nearly every sound is generated by the electronic artillery of Cohen's producer/L.A. cohort Sharon Robinson. There's a polished modesty to the arrangements, always completely subservient to Cohen's richly resonant lyrics and crater-deep voice. Wordwise, Cohen tackles the vagaries of love, the fragile nature of humanity, and the emotional subtext of global politics; typically weighty subjects befitting a man commonly regarded as one of the greatest songpoets of his time. That mantle is duly honored and upheld throughout TEN NEW SONGS. SKU: 1067000

Honeyman (Live 1973)
Personnel: Tim Buckley (vocals, 12-string acoustic guitar); Joe Falsia (guitar); Mark Tiernan (keyboards); Bernie Mysior (bass); Buddy Helm (drums). Recorded live in New York, New York on November 27, 1973. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot & Dan Hersch (DigiPrep). This 1973 live recording presents not Buckley the dreamy jazz-folk troubadour of HAPPY SAD, but Buckley the slippery R&B reprobate of GREETINGS FROM L.A. The band he employs here sounds very much of its time, churning out slightly clunky rock and funk vamps over which Buckley works his patented vocal magic. This being 1973, Buckley sounds most natural on songs from GREETINGS like "Get On Top" and "Devil Eyes." He takes on some earlier material like "Buzzin' Fly" and "Pleasant Street," but he invests them with a strange, dark quality that came from his mid-70s dissilusionment. The best tunes here are the ones with a bit of surprise; Fred Neil's "Dolphins" and an invigorating, funky workout on the traditional tune "Sally Go Round the Roses." Fans of earlier Buckley material are directed to DREAM LETTER or LIVE AT THE TROUBADOUR, but HONEYMAN is still asurprisingly flattering document of an unpleasant time in the singer's career. Collective Soul
Collective Soul: Ed Roland (vocals, guitar); Ross Childress, Dean Roland (guitar); Will Turpin (bass, background vocals); Shane Evans (drums). Additional personnel: Jerry Miller, John DiPuccio (violin); David Chappel (viola); SteveSidgursen (cello); Janet Clippard (acoustic bass); Luis Enrique (percussion); Becky Russell, William Brown, Bertrum Brown, Jackie Johnson (background vocals). Recorded at Criteria Studios, Miami, Florida; Kiva Studios, Memphis, Tennessee; Streeterville Studios, Chicago, Illinois; Granny's Studio, Reno, Nevada. This self-titled album from the group that surprised even itself with the success of its premiere release, HINTS, ALLEGATIONS & THINGS LEFT UNSAID, represents Collective Soul's first complete manifestation as a cohesive band. COLLECTIVE SOUL is a true rock and roll effort, full of hard-edged, rhythmic guitar work, tempered by dips into the musicians' reserve of metal, blues and radio-friendly pop. Ed Roland's songs are simple and strightforward, yet searching--as in "The World I Know," an unpretentious observation of good and evil, laden with questions like "Has the sweet breeze blown?/Has all the kindness gone?" Vigorous riffs, a full-bodied '70s radio-rock sound, and an essentially optimistic outlook on life characterize this record, though there is the occasional surprise like the final track, "Reunion," a contemplative, gospel choir-backed blues tune. Virgin Suicides, The (Original Soundtrack)
Air: Nicholas Godin, Jean-Benoit Dunckel (various instruments). Additional instruments: Gordon Tracks (vocals, drums); Hugo Ferran (saxophone); Brian Reitzell (drums). French duo Air's soundtrack for the Sofia Coppola-directed (yes, THAT Coppola) film THE VIRGIN SUICIDES is a far cry from the bouncy post-disco sounds of their earlier efforts. Instead of light, cheery, and fun music fullof ironic wit, this album delves into darker regions. Dance beats are clearly not the agenda here, as the largely instrumental album paints moody sonic portraits that bring to mind the highly textured '70s work of art-rockers like Eno and Pink Floyd. In fact, much of THE VIRGIN SUICIDES sounds more like a batch of vintage prog-rock outtakes than like the work of Europe's most cutting-edge electronic popsters. Breaking the vocal silence (but not the dark mood) are "Playground Love," sung by Gordon Tracks, and the album's closer, an extended, unsettling monologue delivered by a deep, nightmare-inducing voice. Soul Blues
Personnel: Lightnin' Hopkins (vocals, guitar); Leonard Gaskin (bass); Herbie Lovelle (drums). Recorded in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey in May 1964. Originally released on Prestige (7377). Includes original liner notes by Chris Albertson. Digital remastering by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley). Though Lightnin' Hopkins began recording in the mid-'40s in the traditional style of solo acoustic country blues, he's one of the few major blues figures who moved easily back and forth between acoustic and electric guitar and solo and full-band performances throughout his lengthy career. Recorded in 1964 for Fantasy Records, SOUL BLUES finds Hopkins in possibly his most conducive setting, playing electric guitar backed with a bassist, Leonard Gaskin; and a drummer, Herb Lovelle. Opening with the steady-rolling, gospel-tinged "I'm Going to Build Me a Heaven of My Own," these 10 tracks are Hopkins at the top of his game. "I'm a Crawling Black Snake" puts a personal spin on some of the hoariest blues metaphors in such a way that the song sounds brand new, and "The Howling Wolf" pays tribute to anotherblues legend in typical Hopkins style. SOUL BLUES is small-combo blues at its best. SKU: 1004286
