City To City
Originally released on United Artists. Often mistaken with Night Owl, as they both had similar subject matter and beautiful Patrick Byrne covers, the main difference is that this is the one with "Baker Street," probably the most flogged song of the past two decades, and one that now does his credibility no good. Missing out in the memory bank is the powerful "The Ark," and the often ignored, radio-friendly title track. It also includes two of his finest open love songs: "Right Down The Line" and the innocently profound "Whatever's Written In Your Heart"), with the line "so we agree to disagree, at least we got ourmemories." Oui
The Sea And Cake: Sam Prekop (vocals, guitar); Archer Prewitt (guitar, keyboards); John McEntire (keyboards, vibraphone, marimba, drums, percussion); Eric Claridge (bass). Additional personnel: Susan Voelz (violin); Alison Chesley (cello); Paul Mertens (flute, alto flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, soprano & tenor saxophones); Jeb Bishop (trombone). Recorded at Soma Electronic Studio, Chicago, Illinois. The fifth album by the jazz-tinged art-pop quartet is every bit as hypnotically fascinating as their previous work. John McEntire's percussion, vibes and marimba drive the songs, colored by judicious reeds and strings. Sam Prekop's breathy voice is mixed low, and he sings the evocative but seemingly meaningless lyrics with such a complete lack of affect that they become simply another musical timbre. The 10 songs blend into each other, in an appealing and colorful way. More careful listening reveals how cleverly Archer Prewitt and John McEntire'skeyboards shape the melodies into songs both immediately accessible and inventively complex. OUI is a low-key wonder. It's About That Time (Live At Fillmore East March 7th 1970)
Full title:Live At Fillmore East (March 7, 1970): It's About That Time. All tracks have been previously unreleased. Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Wayne Shorter (soprano & tenor saxophones); Dave Holland (acoustic & electric basses); Chick Corea (Fender Rhodes piano); Jack DeJohnette (drums); Airto Moreira (percussion). Producer: Teo Macero. Reissue producer: Bob Belden. Recorded at The Fillmore East, New York, New York on March 7, 1970. Includes liner notes by James Isaacs. Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder & Seth Foster (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). The creative vision of Miles Davis was at its most mercurial in the late '60s and early '70s. He advanced the language of jazz (and pop) not just with each album, but practically with each gig. A perfect case in point is this live two-disc set. LIVE AT THE FILLMORE EAST is like manna from heaven for Miles fans, its nine cuts all previously unreleased performances from a formation of Miles's band that didn't stabilize long enough for a studio release. A considerably different version of this band had recorded the groundbreaking BITCHES BREW not much more than six months before this Fillmore appearance, but the record released as AT THE FILLMORE in 1971, featured yet another incarnation, sans Wayne Shorter, whose last gig with Miles is captured here. Accordingly, this release finds Davis and cohorts in transition between the abstract jazz-rock of BITCHES BREW and the funkified, modal jams of subsequent recordings. The two sets documented here draw largely from BITCHES BREW, but the variations just a few months down the line are startling. Chick Corea's ring-modulated electric piano creates a Stockhausen-like maelstrom of sound, while Shorter plays some of the most daring, freewheeling solos of his career. Dave Holland splits the difference between funk, rock, and jazz, joining with Jack DeJohnette's roiling drums to forge a tumbling sonic carnival ride. The entire band blazes through every tune working on all cylinders, making a monstrously joyful noise by which the rest of us are still edified, even decades after the fact. SKU: 1061823

Headlines And Footnotes
Personnel includes: Pete Seeger (vocals, 12-string guitar, banjo). Recorded between 1955 and 1999. Includesliner notes by Mark Greenberg. Digitally mastered by Charlie Pilzer (1999, AirShow, Springfield, Virginia). By the '60s, Pete Seeger was as well known--possibly even more well known--for his outspoken social activism as he was for his remarkable performing skills and the depth of his knowledge as a historian and ethnomusicologist. This 23-track anthology, culled from live and studio recordings, touches on all of these aspects. Archiving anthems from the union organization, civil rights and anti-war movements alongside songs concerning specific historical events such as the sinking of the Titanic and the Reuben James. Among the highlights is the savage "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy," one of Seeger's most controversial songs, a Vietnam allegory based on a '40s incident in which a foot soldier drowned when his commanding officer forced him to walk in water without knowing how deep it was. The extensive liner notes place these songs in their proper historical context. SKU: 1004370

Little Criminals
Personnel includes: Randy Newman (vocals, piano); Glenn Frey (vocals, guitar); Waddy Wachtel, Joe Walsh (guitar); Ry Cooder (mandola); Ralph Grierson (piano); Willie Weeks, Rick Marotta (bass); Jim Keltner (drums, percussion); Milt Holland (percussion); TimSchmidt, J.D. Souther, Don Henley (background vocals). Recorded at Warner Brothers Recording Studios, North Hollywood, California amd The Burbank Studios, Burbank, California between July & September 1977. Newman's most commercially successful album opens with his misunderstood masterpiece, "Short People." Of course he is not being derogatory towards people of restricted growth, that's just the way it seems. Those who understand Mr. Newman's brilliant pathos and irony know he has a heart of gold. After all, what heart of stone could write evocative material such as "Baltimore" and "I'll Be Home." It is widely known that Newman is one of America's greatest ever songwriters--if only his music could be more widely known and appreciated, and not have to rely on "helping hands" of the Eagles to escalate its US sales and chart position. Strays
This is an Enhanced CD which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files which features a making of the video "Just Because." Jane's Addiction: Perry Farrell (vocals); Dave Navarro (guitar); Chris Chaney (bass); Stephen Perkins (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: John Shanks (mandolin); Scott Page (saxophone); Bob Ezrin (keyboards, percussion); Aaron Embry (keyboards, kalimba); Zack Ray (keyboards); Mike Finnegan (organ); Brendan Hawkins, Joe Bishara, Brian Virtue (programming); Donna Brooks-Jackson, Kim Hill (background vocals). Thirteen years after emerging from the studio with RITUAL DE LO HABITUAL, Jane's Addiction returned in 2003 with STRAYS. Unlike many comebacks, Jane's chemistry remains, even with new bassist Chris Chaney stepping in for founding member Eric Avery. With Perry Farrell in fine fettle and legendary producer Bob Ezrin aboard to oversee this highly risky project, the band's gamble has paid off in spades. Despite Jane's extended hiatus, the group's aggression hasn't abated at all, whether it's Dave Navarro's crunching guitar behind the stomping opening cut "True Nature," the mosh-ready groove "Just Because," or the ultra-funky "Wrong Girl," echoing Navarro's time in the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Unlike so much of the aggro-rock this quartet influenced in their aftermath, part of JA's magic was its ease with more eclectic fare. Some of this outing's more interesting moments include "Everybody's Friend," an acoustic-soakedode to a lost chum, and "The Riches," which draws from a palette of spiky hooks and Chaney's fat basslines that give way to an ethereal outro of chiming guitar and swirling keyboards. With only their third studio album (!), Jane's Addiction makes a triumphant comeback that feels as if they never really left. SKU: 1085489

Ethiopia
Recorded at Black Ark Studio, Kingston, Jamaica. A curious but rewarding mishmash, ETHIOPIA collects raresingles and unreleased tracks produced during the '70s by Lee Perry at his famed Black Ark Studios in Kingston, Jamaica. Most of the album features Perry's own songs, but excellent tunes by Aisha Morrison, Bunny Ruggs, The Silvertones-with a surprisingly faithful cover of the Bee Gees' "How Deep Is Your Love"-and Leo Graham are welcome additions. Recorded during what many consider Perry's greatest era, the songs on ETHIOPIA, while not dub versions themselves, are thick with the slow-moving dread of Perry's best dub work. Highlights include the Rasta-sanctified "Give Praises" and "Bless The Weed" and the considerably more earthy "I'll Take You Home." Dub fans should note that the opening track, "Stay Red," has been the basis for several Perry dubs. SKU: 5094787

Smith packs WILLENNIUM with 15 tracks that are guided by the producing hand of Fresh Prince. "Wild Wild West," from the blockbuster movie of the same name is also included. Though WILLENNIUM might offer a taste of the 21st century, it's also a throwback to old-school hip-hop. Other standout tracks include "Potnas," "Uuhhh" (featuring Kel Spencer), and "I'm Comin'." Digitally mastered by Doug Sax (The Mastering Lab). Ever the chameleon, Linda Ronstadt has continued to progress, evolve, and experiment throughout her multi-decade career. From folk-rock frontwoman to California-rock solo smash, to new wave belter to standards songstress, Ronstadt has never rested on her laurels. Ronstadt began her career as a Stone Poney, and the band's Top 20 hit "A Different Drum" is included here. Linda's Eagles-inspired hit "When Will I Be Loved" is one of many fine cover tunes in the set. Linda gets tender on "Blue Bayou" and soulful on "Hurt So Bad." After closing out her rock era with the energetic "Get Closer," Linda starred in PIRATES OF PENZANCE, which inspired her to record three albums with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. Ronstadt superbly interprets "What's New" and "My Funny Valentine." An entire disc is devoted to Ronstadt's duets, such as "Somewhere Out There" (with James Ingram) and "Don't Know Much" (with Aaron Neville). The final disc contains rarities such as a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Tumbling Dice" (from the FM soundtrack) and "All I Have To Do Is Dream" (with Kermit the Frog). The range of previously unreleased material on BOX SET makes it an ideal companion to her GREATEST HITS. SKU: 1068286

Additional personnel: Tom Costello, Paul Reisch (various instruments); Gerry Comito (guitar); Darryl Dixon, David Watson, Bill Mobley (horns); Kerwin "Sleek" Young (bass); Nathaniel Townsley III (drums); John B. Smooth (congas); Keith Shocklee (programming, background vocals); Kamron, Kevin Boone (scratches); Tet, Norma Jean Wright, Paulette McWilliams, Bemshi, Carl DeHaney, The Punk Barbarians, Grandell Thompson, Jamel Bazemore, Sean Chaplin, Victor Brownlee, Harry Allen, Errol Nazareth, Jesse Smith, Andre Guilty, Mike Williams, Akilah Watkins, Raymond Mattry, Sheila Cabllero, Jeanette Harrod, Prince Yellordy, Jean Victor (background vocals). Producers: Gary G-Wiz, Carl Ryder, Hank Shocklee, Keith Shocklee, Flavor Flav. Engineers include: Nick Sansano, Gerry Comito, Jimmy O'Neil. Includes liner notes by Chuck D. As the title of the album clearly suggests, Public Enemy is quite aware of the situation. Yet rather than pick at these divisive wounds, lyricist/rapper Chuck D. seems more interested in wading through hip-hop's less charted territories. Sure, he still won't passup a chance to espouse his opinion on gangsta-isms--particularly on "Give It Up," the album's ultra-catchy first single--but he seems far more crisp when kicking an eco-educational rap like "Bedlam 13:13," or backing Flavor Flav with JB-style gruff-voiced call-outs on "What Kind Of Power We Got?" On these and other tracks Chuck commands a lead-by-example urgency in his rhymes, something few of today's rappers are capable of. Such lyrical and stylistic innovations--augmenting the Bomb Squad and Gary G-Wiz production with live instrumentation is a masterstroke that updates the classic PE sound--should be enough to give MUSE SICK a purposeful existence. Yet, the album's most important new contribution to today's hip-hop just might be medicinal: inferring the music with post-gangsta objectives. SKU: 1039520

Absent Friends
The Divine Comedy: Neil Hannon. Additional personnel includes: Lauren Laverne (vocals); Yann Tiersen (accordion). Recorded between 2001 & 2003. Though a number of talented people have contributed to the Divine Comedy over the years,in the end, it's always been singer/songwriter Neil Hannon's baby. On ABSENT FRIENDS, he finally dispenses with all pretense of the Comedy being a "band" by playing the bulk of the instruments himself (aside from the orchestral parts). He's also left most notions about "rock" by the side of the road, as he seemingly pursues his goal of being the Scott Walker of Generation X more arduously than ever. While much of Hannon's swooning, grandly arranged work bears the same moodiness and intensity as that of Walker, ABSENT FRIENDS features a health dose of humor, as witnessed by the satirical character study "The Happy Goth." Hannon is also capable of unexpected twists, such as the most poignant ballad on the album turning out to be a long-haul trucker's reverie. Whatever the subject, though, archness, wit, and sumptuous melody are all strongly in evidence throughout the album. SKU: 6550068

Poor Fricky
East River Pipe: F.M. Cornog. Originally released on Sarah Records shortly before the label folded in 1995, POOR FRICKY was quickly reissued by Merge Records, also home to Stephin Merritt's Magnetic Fields. Like Merritt, East River Pipe (F.M. Cornog) is a one-man band. Recorded and mixed at home on a portable cassette machine, POOR FRICKY shares Merritt's taste for low-budget solo reinterpretations of soul-stirring '60s pop archetypes, but the comparison breaks down after that. Cornog uses more guitars in one song than Merritt mightemploy over the course of a full album, and his obvious hero is Brian Wilson, not Phil Spector. More importantly, where Merritt's often jaundiced and cynical lyrics are laced with dry irony and goofy similes, Cornog's emotionally direct songs are often genuinely dark, with depressive lyrics that belie his sometimes-sunny music. It's satisfyingly ironic that POOR FRICKY's most uplifting tune is called "Bring On The Loser." SKU: 1029228

Fountains Of Wayne
Fountains Of Wayne: Chris Collingwood (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Adam Schlesinger (drums, guitar, keyboards, vocals). Additional personnel: Danny Weinkauf (bass); Dominique Durand (background vocals). Recorded at The Place, New York, New York between January and April 1996. Fountains Of Wayne provide the essential missing link between the Raspberries and Green Day: sunny, harmony-laced choruses and pure-pop song structures with a gritty, Buzzcocks-like edge provided by distorted guitars and strident drumming. Songs like "Joe Rey" and "Barbara H." strike the perfect balance between sweetness and bite. The band, from Wayne, New Jersey, is the brainchild of vocalists/multi-instrumentalists Chris Collingwood and Adam Schlesinger. Schlesinger was the composer of the Beatlesque title song of the film "That Thing You Do," and the songs on the band's self-titled debut (all Schlesinger/Collingwood cowrites) update that tune's amiable power-pop quite agreeably. The frothy pop hijinks are backed up by a keen sense of humor, as on "Leave The Biker," which finds the protagonist exhorting theobject of his desire to dump her bad-boy beau in favor of his nerdish cool. The gentle, poignant "She's Got A Problem" is an affecting, sympathetic ballad that recalls the granddaddy of nerd-pop, Jonathan Richman. The coup de grace comes with "Please Don't Rock Me Tonight," a clever twist on rock and roll cliches that sounds like a sequel to the Records' classic "Starry Eyes." SKU: 1011361

One Upmanship
Mal Waldron Quintet: Mal Waldron (piano); Steve Lacy (soprano saxophone); Manfred Schoof (trumpet); Jimmy Woode (bass); Makaya Ntshoko (drums). Producers: Matthias Winckelmann, Horst Weber. Recorded at Conny's Studio, Wolperath, Germany on February 12, 1977; Tonstudio Bauer, Ludwigsburg, Germany on May 8, 1978. Includes liner notes by Kevin Whitehead. Pianist Mal Waldron and soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy first recorded together in the late-'50s.Both spent most of the careers working and living in Europe, and this album was recorded in Germany. Both musicians mix a precise sense of angularity with deeply emotive poetics. The three quintet pieces, featuring a rhythm section and trumpet player Manfred Schoof, include the staggeringly beautiful "The Seagulls of Kristiansund." Lacy's playing is an apt voice for this piece's melancholy seascape. All the album's compositions were written by Waldron; ONE-UPMANSHIP also includes three solo piano pieces. Waldron recorded extensively during this time and ONE-UPMANSHIP is one of his premiere titles of this era. SKU: 1011508

Kinky
Kinky: Gilberto Cerezo (vocals, guitar, scratches); Carlos Chairez (vocals, guitar); Ulises Lozano (vocals, keyboards, programming); Cesar Pliego (vocals, bass); Omar Gongora (vocals, drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Camilo Meja (flute); Raul Jaquez (accordion); Luis Ignacio Rosales (saxophone); Pablo Martinez (trumpet); Eugenio Rosales (trombone); Roy Galvan (congas, cowbell, tambourine). KINKY was nominated for the 2002 Latin Grammy Award for Best Rock Album By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. KINKY was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album. Chancesare you've heard Kinky's "Mas" in previews for NBC's SOPRANOS knockoff KINGPIN. The guns, sweat, violence, and dangerous sex of the commercial are an ideal setting for the Mexican band's hot, danceably exotic sound, which blends electronica and rock with Latin rhythms and ethereal vocals in a compelling, percolating mix. Campy (consider the Dirk Diggler disco of "Mirando De Lando"), yet with an undeniably tough center, Kinky expertly navigates the shoals of its first full-length effort as if it had spent every day of the past decade in the studio. The percussive batucada onslaught of "Sol" will have even the most diehard wallflowers strutting their stuff, and if some of the rhythms of "Ejercicio" sound a trifle recycled, just consider it a breathing space before the next take-no-prisoners rush of Central American funk. "Cornman" blends chiming Monterey accordion with tough New York Avenue C R&B in an irresistible amalgam that segues into the equally seductive, timbale-laced "Anorexic Freaks," a stylish, almost throwaway cut so simultaneously funky yet post-modern you'll wonder if these guys aren't Japanese or something.
