Resident Evil
Original scorecomposed by Marilyn Manson. "My Plague" (Slipknot) was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Metal Performance. With a splatter-filled zombie/mutant video-game-cum-horror-film providing the inspiration, all corners of the aggro-rock nation pulled together to serve up seething songs for the RESIDENT EVIL soundtrack. Filled with plenty of previously unreleased material, much of the music is characterized by guttural growling, trip-hammer time signatures, and teeth-rattling guitar playing by groups like Slipknot ("My Plague [New Abuse Mix]"), Mudvayne ("Dig [Everything And Nothing Remix]"), and Static-X ("Anything But This"). Other participants chose to take an equally dark but more melodic approach, including vets Fear Factory ("Invisible Wounds [The Suture Mix]") and Rammstein ("Halleluja") along with rookies Five Pointe O ("The Infinity"). Electronica mavens Crystal Method even pump up the testosterone on "Name Of The Game (Clean Game)," featuring crunchy riffing by guest guitarist Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello. The only other departures from the nu-metal content of this collection come via Depeche Mode's previously unreleased, slithering cover of The Stooges' "Dirt" and Method Man's Prodigy Mix of "Release Yo' Delph" complete with sampled fanfare and chock-a-block rhythms. Most impressive is Marilyn Manson's quartet of murky instrumentals co-written with Tim Skold that include the main title theme and the equally sinister "Seizure of Power." SKU: 1071075

Beat Goes On, The (The Best Of Sonny & Cher)
Producer: Sonny Bono Compilation producer: Bill Inglot. Includes liner notes by Ken Barnes. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Dan Hersch (1991 DigiPrep). A nicely thorough collection of Sonny and Cher's classic Atco era, THE BEAT GOES ON covers a lot of ground for a single-disc anthology. Besides the duo's hits, it includes a handful of Sonny's solo singles, most notably the 45 edit of "My Best Friend's Girl is Out of Sight," from his staggeringly weird 1967 solo album INNER VIEWS. None of Cher's solo material is here, which lends a slightly lopsided view of the duo's history. A handful of their songs, the Spectoresque debut "Baby Don't Go" and their breakout "I Got You Babe" represent the peak of a certain style of commercial folk-pop that was one of the defining sounds of the 1960s. However, it'sthe lesser-known tracks, like the full-on Phil Spector tribute "It's the Little Things," the waltz-time "A Beautiful Story," and a very odd spoken-word b-side called "Hello," that are the most interesting. Homespun (Apple Venus Vol.1 Home Demos)
XTC: Andy Partridge, Colin Moulding. This is a stunning behind-the-scenes look at XTC's APPLE VENUS VOLUME ONE. HOMESPUN offers up the album's demos in identical track order. Nine of the songs are Andy Partridge's--the other two are by Colin Moulding. Regardless of their composers, these demo versions make it clear that the orchestral bearing ofthe finished songs was worked out well in advance. There are few marked differences in these precursors, but that is what is so compelling and instructive. HOMEPSUN represents masterful pop music as it's being worked out on the drawing board of home studios in preparation for the painstaking work of studio recording. One number, "I'd Like That," is heard first in a brief snippet that was recorded to a simple cassette machine and without its lyrics in place. Moments later, it gives way to a more complete demo. Rare are albums that deserve the sort of examination and celebration that APPLE VENUS does. SKU: 1080007

Empty The Bones Of You
New-generation Warp Records wunderkind Chris Clark follows his2001 debut 'Clarence Park' with this second album of crisp and cerebral electronica. Five
Personnel: J.J. Cale (vocals, guitar, bass); Bill Boatman (electric guitar, fiddle); Christine Lakeland (guitar, organ, background vocals); Bill Kenner (mandolin); Shelly Kurland, Carl Gorodetzy, Roy Christensen, Marv Chantry (strings); George Tidwell, Don Sheffield, Dennis Goode, Terry Wiliams (horns); David Briggs (piano); Larry Bell (electric piano); Farrell Morris (vibraphone); Billy Cox, Carl Radle, Nick Rather (bass); Karl Himmell, Buddy Harmon, Jimmy Karstein (drums); JimmyKarstein (congas); Sherry Porter (background vocals). Engineers include: Ron Reynolds, Rick Horton, Les Ladd. The image on the cover of J.J. Cale's fifth album is apt. It's the numeral five as it appears on paper currency; apt for an album that proves that Cale is indeed money in the bank. The album builds a slow but steady momentum with each song, as sturdy supporting grooves abound. Several songs feature Cale by himself or in the company of one other player or singer, and the cast of musicians expertly carry out his visions throughout. Though the album mines a familiar bluesy and rootsy territory, Cale gives it all his own signature stamp. Cale extends 5 beyond a back-porch, small-combo affair by utilizing strings on two tracks, "Sensitive Kind" and "Mona." The lushness that the strings provide adds a luxuriousness to his version of the blues, in much the same manner as B.B. King and Ray Charles. SKU: 1019686

Neptunes Present...Clones, The [PA]
Personnel includes: The Neptunes, Busta Rhymes, Pharrell, Ludacris, Jay Z, Vanessa Marquez, Nelly, Snoop Dogg, Jadakiss, Nas, I-20, Clipse, Ab-Liva. As if making their mark as one of the greatest pop and hip-hop production teams to come out of the late '90s wasn't enough, Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo took their Neptunes persona to the other side of the recording glass for CLONES. Having worked as producers for a broad array of artists including Britney Spears, Mystikal, Ice Cube, and Perry Farrell, the Neptunes were able to cash in quite a number of chips for this wide-ranging 2003 project. Fueled by the duo's trademark mix of beats and loops, numerous major names make this eclectic scene. Standouts include Busta Rhymes praising booties ("Light You're A** On Fire"), O.D.B. returning from jail as Dirt McGirt, spitting out rhymes over a sparse cut ("Pop Sh*t"), and Nelly slipping into a slick St. Lunatic-like groove ("If"). Williams and Hugo move easily from an infectious Kelis/Nas duet ("Popular Thug") and an ultra-funky Jay-Z jam ("Frontin'") to whip-smart dancehall reggae with Supercat ("The Don of Dons [Put De Ting Pon Dem]") and straightforward alt-pop by the High Speed Scene ("F**k n' Spend"). Eclectic with a capitol E, CLONES keeps with the Neptunespenchant for casting a wide creative net. SKU: 1086564

Peter Gabriel Vol.1 [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush (vocals); Robert Fripp (guitar); Roy Bittan, Larry Fast (keyboards); Tony Levin (bass); Phil Collins (drums); Dick Wagner, Jim Maelen, Steve Hunter, Allan Schwartzberg. Recorded at The Soundstage, Toronto, Canada. Digitally remastered by Tony Cousins (Metropolis). In 1977, two years after leaving Genesis, Peter Gabriel emerged as a solo artist with the first of three records entitled PETER GABRIEL. He was anxious for a change of musical direction, but after years of fronting one of the foremost art-rock outfits of the era, he hadn't exactly lost his taste for the dramatic. On his own, Gabriel was free to explore his own personal obsessions. Consequently the work is rife with images of isolation, paranoia, and the apocalypse. Aided by the London Symphony Orchestra and the cavernous production of Bob Ezrin (Kiss, Alice Cooper), the record reaches dramatic peaks of symphonic rock. Musically, Gabriel was clearly in experimental mode. The collection opens with the cheery yet menacing "Moribund the Burgermeister" (which sounds like a twisted fairy tale), followed by the hit "Solsbury Hill," a lilting acoustic ballad which obliquely addresses Gabriel's departure from Genesis and is an enduring fixture on FM radio. "Modern Love," with its larynx-shreddingvocal, rocks as hard as anything Gabriel ever recorded. The just plain odd "Excuse Me," Gabriel's sole foray into barbershop quartet territory, has old-world charm, and "Here Comes the Flood" is Gabriel at his doomiest. SKU: 1076267

Bad Animals
Originally released on Capitol. Heart followed up their smash 1985 self-titled comeback album with another big seller, 1987's BAD ANIMALS. Producer Ron Nevison was back behind the mixing desk, and the Wilson sisters scored again with an album chock full of prime pop rock tracks. Highlights include the power ballads "Alone" and"Wait for an Answer," as well as the harder rocking cuts "You Ain't Too Tough" and "Easy Target." Again, singer Ann Wilson turns in a superb vocal performance, confirming her unfortunate status as one rock's all-time underrated singers. With their previous self-titled album and BAD ANIMALS, Heart became one of the '80s biggest rock comeback stories. SKU: 1076387

Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (The Motion Picture Soundtrack - 30th Anniversary Special Edition)
The LIMITED edition of ZIGGY STARDUST: THE MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK includes silk screen printed clear o-card, poster, and mock ticket. Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars: David Bowie (vocals); Mick Ronson (guitar); Trevor Bolder (bass); Mick Woodmansey (drums). Recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, England. Includes liner notes by D.A. Pennebaker. Digitally remastered by Tony Visconti. When David Bowie killed off his fatalistic rock-star character Ziggy Stardust, he also announced his retirement from live performance. His "final" concert was filmed and the soundtrack sat on a shelf for a decade before its release in 1983. ZIGGY STARDUST -THE MOTION PICTURE is an interesting audio snapshot that represents the Ziggy Stardust arc and incorporates a few different facets of Bowie's career up to that point. Starting with the ragged, garage-rock meter of "Hang on to Yourself," Bowie introduces his beloved alien ("Ziggy Stardust"), and flirts with his flamboyant side (the medley of "Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud/All The Young Dudes/Oh! You Pretty Things"). From here, Ziggy's transition ("Changes") into messianic figure takes him through a host of rock-star realities ("Let's Spend The Night Together," "White Light/White Heat") before his meteoric rise gets snuffed out in a flash ("Rock 'N' Roll Suicide.") Throughout this performance, it's easy to see how Bowie's combination of solid rock & roll aesthetics andover-the-top theatricality eventually spawned and shaped everything from glam-rock to later developments such as punk and Madonna. One of Bowie's best and more underrated live performances. SKU: 6526488

Millennium Collection, The
Full title: 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Johnny Cash. Personnel includes: Johnny Cash (vocals, guitar); Waylon Jennings (vocals). Producer: Jack Clement. Compilation producer: Andy McKaie. Includes liner notes by Rich Kienzle. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of MCA's "20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection" series. Though the '80s are regarded by some as a valley in the long career of Johnny Cash, the country legend's tenure at Mercury Records during that time produced some fine work. Such albums as JOHNNY 99 and ROCKABILLY BLUES found him shedding new light on songs by Bruce Springsteen and Guy Clark, and offering some hard-hitting new material of his own. So it's hard to figure why those albums were ignored on this collection of Cash's Mercury recordings. Instead, 10 of the 12 tunes are reworkings of classic tunes from the Columbia and Sun years. While it would have been nice to hear the aforementioned gems, it's impressive enough to hear Cash revisit this material some three decades down the road with just as much vigor and (thanks to old pal Jack Clement) a production style amazingly free of any '80s dross.Instead, the rockabilly side of Cash's sound is underlined to fine effect. Of the non-vintage tunes that round out the album, well, only so much can be done for Harry Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle," but Cash and Waylon Jennings offer a hearty run through the self-explanatory story song "The Night Hank Williams Came to Town." Let There Be Rock [Digipak] [Remastered]
This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. AC/DC: Bon Scott (vocals); Angus Young, Malcolm Young (guitar); Mark Evans (bass); Phil Rudd (drums). Recorded at Alberts Studio, Sydney, Australia between January & February 1977. Originally released as Atco (36151). Includes liner notes by Murray Engelheart. If possible, AC/DC actually made their sound denser on its sophomore effort, LET THERE BE ROCK. A darker album than its predecessor, HIGH VOLTAGE, this album leans further towards AC/DC's twisted extension in the blues tradition. Which is not to say that the band relented from its three-chord power riffing for one millisecond. The presence of Angus Young's mighty Gibson SG looms over the album like a sheet of lead on a windless day. What has changed is the inclusion of longer songs like"Go Down," "Dog Eat Dog," and the floor rattling "Let There be Rock," all of which feature ripping interplay between Bon Scott's perverse howl and Young's straight for the throat guitar lines. Where others hint at hormone-driven themes of lust and adolescent rebellion, AC/DC revel in them with abandon. Thus "Bad Boy Boogie" and "Problem Child" are songs your parents are sure to hate with heartfelt passion. The album's highlights are "Hell Ain't a Bad Place to Be," a mighty fist-waver whose references to warmer climates are something that only the most uptight will take seriously and the near classic "Whole Lotta Rosie," which would become one of the band's live staples and show-stoppers. 90125
Yes: Trevor Rabin (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Chris Squire (vocals, bass); Alan White (vocals, drums, percussion); Jon Anderson (vocals); Tony Kaye (keyboards). Additional personnel: Jonathan Jeczalik, Dave Lawson (programming). Engineers: Gary Langan, Julian Mendelsohn, Stuart Bruce. When Jon Anderson rejoined Yes after DRAMA, he was inserting himself into an unusual situation. Keyboardist Geoff Downes and longtime guitarist Steve Howe had left to form Asia with prog rock vets John Wetton (King Crimson, Roxy Music etc.) and Carl Palmer (ELP). Chris Squire and Alan Whitebrought original Yes keysman Tony Kaye back and recruited vibrant young Australian guitarist/vocalist/composer Trevor Rabin. The quartet had already begun writing and recording, but Anderson was able to insert himself into the proceedings with such ease that the new combination sounds completely natural on 90125. Mostly, the band was concerned with trimming the musical fat to keep pace with the onslaught of the '80s. Thus, tracks like "Owner of a Lonely Heart" and "City of Love" are full of samples, splices and almost funky beats and riffs. The unusual time changes and complex riffs of tunes like "Changes" and "Cinema" leave little doubt that this is still a Yes album, but the band succeeds in giving their sound a contemporary overhaul on 90125. Billion Dollar Babies
Alice Cooper: Vincent "Alice Cooper" Furnier (vocals); Michael Bruce (guitar, keyboards); Glen Buxton (guitar); Dennis Dunaway (bass); Neal Smith (drums). Alice Cooper scored their first global #1 hit with this album, but it would be the last "classic" release by the original line-up (who would split one year later). The band sheds the raw garage-rock of earlier albums in favor of a glossier production, but grit and sleaze can still be detected at the music's core. With their highly theatrical stage show (which featured Cooper getting his head chopped off by a guillotine), Alice Cooper became a household name, but the material onBILLION DOLLAR BABIES was so exceptional that there was no danger of the music being overshadowed by gimmicks. While mission statement "No More Mr. Nice Guy" is the best-known song, the rest of the album is just as strong. The title track features a backing vocal by Donovan and a mammoth backbeat from drummer Neal Smith, while sweet melodicism plays an important role in "Generation Landslide" and "Mary Ann." But Cooper's trademark disturbing music and lyrics can still be detected on such self-explanatory titles like "Sick Things" and "I Love the Dead," all these elements working together to make this one of the best, most popular hard rock releases of the early '70s. Rugrats Go Wild
In what amounts to the greatest crossover attempt since Mork crash-landed onto the set of Happy Days, two of Nickelodeon's most successful franchises have a head-on collision at the cinema and one of the results is RUGRATS GO WILD: MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE. With the casts of bothTHE RUGRATS and THE WILD THORNBERRYS as principals, the resulting collection is a charming showcase for voice-over vets. Cheryl Chase, Nancy Cartwright, Cree Summer, and Tommy, (aka Angelica, Chuckie, Susie and Tommy) team up on the kooky, Mark Mothersbaugh-composed "Island Princess." Bruce Willis, voice of beloved family dog Spike, also makes his mark on a duet with animated nemesis Chrissie Hynde on the catchy-but-sinister "Big Bad Cat" and an amusing lyrical rewrite of the thumping Iggy Pop classic "Lust For Life." Kids at heart get their musical mojo filled with previously released songs by The Clash ("Should I Stay Or Should I Go"), George Clinton ("Atomic Dog"), Train ("She's On Fire"), and Flashlight Brown ("Ready to Roll"). Those looking for newer fare can turn to Aerosmith's rowdy rocker "Lizard Love" and fellow Beantowners American Hi-Fi's sneering take on The Police classic "Message In a Bottle." SKU: 1086341

Grateful Dead (Skull & Roses)
Contains an untitled hidden track which follows "I'm A Hog For You." The Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Ron "Pig Pen" McKernan (vocals, harmonica, organ); Phil Lesh (vocals, bass); Bill Kreutzmann (drums). Additional personnel: Merl Saunders (organ). Recorded live at The Manhattan Center, New York, New York on April 4-6, 1971; Fillmore East, New York, New York on April 26-29, 1971; Winterland, San Francisco, California. Includes liner notes by Paul Nichols and Hale Milgrim. One of the things that made the Dead such a unique live act was the sheer variety of their influences. The vastness of the musical terrain they covered is well demonstrated on 1971's GRATEFUL DEAD, nicknamed "Skull & Roses" because of its cover art. It captures the band's live sound at a time when their marathon, acid-inspired concerts were swiftly becoming the stuff of legend and earning them legions of new fans. This set conveys the typical arc of a Dead show. The band couldbe economical and straightforward, with brisk, stripped-down numbers like the lilting "Bertha," the straight-forward country of "Me and My Uncle" and Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried," and the country-folk of "Me and Bobby McGee." They could just as easily go into lugubrious album-side-filling improvisations like "The Other One" and pump out loose-limbed, groovy versions '50s rockers like Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" and Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." The set concludes with the laid-back, joyous jam of the traditional "Goin' Down the Road Feelin'Bad." Conspicuous in his absence is singer/keyboardist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, whose alcoholism was beginning to take its toll. SKU: 4112775

Moody Blue [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Elvis Presley (vocals); The Sweet Inspirations, Sherrill Nielson, Kathy Westmoreland, J.D. Sumner & The Stamps, Myrna Smith (background vocals). Engineers: Brian Christian, Mike Moran, Clair Brothers. Recorded between February 4, 1976 & April 25, 1977. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. Elvis' last studio album is, in fact, a hodgepodge of recordings from several 1976 studio sessions and four concert tracks. Also included among the live songs are the Olivia Newton John hit, "If You Love Me (Let Me Know)," a pretty silly take on the Gladiolas' "Little Darlin'," and one of Elvis' favorite songs, "Unchained Melody." Studio tracks include covers of Jim Reeves' country hit "He'll Have to Go," the George Jones hit "She Thinks I Still Care," and two singles that reached the pop Top 40, "Way Down" and the title track. The abundance of country songs on MOODY BLUE reflects the shift in Presley's audience, as does the chart performance of both singles (each reached the numberone position on Billboard's country chart). Presley's vocals for the studio tracks were recorded in his den at Graceland. SKU: 1057883
