In Budapest
Personnel: Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Tommy Flanagan (piano); Frank De La Rosa (bass); Ed Thigpen (drums). Reissue producer: Eric Miller Recorded live in Budapest, Hungary on May 20, 1970. Includes liner notes by Joe Goldberg. Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1999, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Not many jazz singers played Eastern Europe during the time of the Iron Curtain, but jazz records were nevertheless a treasured underground commodity in Communist countries. This concert from May 20, 1970 is atypical only in its location, however. Fitzgerald is backed by her usual road trio of the era--pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Frank de la Rosa, and drummer Ed Thigpen--and performs a fairly standard repertoire. Highlights include a fairly breathtaking scat solo in the opening "Crazy Rhythm," a smoky "As Time Goes By," and fine versions of several pop hits of the era, including a slinky take on Bacharach and David's "This Girl'sin Love With You." The sound is clear and warm, and the audience certainly sounds properly appreciative! A fine concert document. SKU: 5030616

Thorns, The (Special Edition)
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The Thorns: Shawn Mullins (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, dulcimer, vihuela, keyboards, percussion); Matthew Sweet (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, baritone ukelele, vihuela, keyboards, marxophone, percussion); Pete Droge (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, ukelin, keyboards, zildjuans). Includes limited edition bonus CD. Additional personnel: Greg Leisz (acoustic, electric guitars, pedal steel, lap steel, & 12-string guitar, electric dulcimer); Brendan O'Brien (acoustic & electric guitars, hurdy gurdy, harmonica, keyboards, bass, percussion); Roy Bittan (piano); Jim Keltner (drums). Recorded at Southern Tracks Studios, Atlanta, Georgia. Any time a new "supergroup" is formed, fans of the combo's individual members are both excited and skeptical. In the case of The Thorns, these particular emotions ran especially high when it came to singer/songwriters as talented, critically lauded, and seemingly incongruous as power-pop icon Matthew Sweet, neo-folkie Shawn Mullins and Seattle rocker Pete Droge. Amazingly, the word that comes to mind upon firstlisten to THE THORNS is "band." Putting aside all prima donna tendencies in the service of finding a cohesive sound, the boys come up with a spectacularly lush, organic, and relaxed stylistic fusion. Recalling other extraordinary groups like Crosby, Stills & Nash and RUMORS-era Fleetwood Mac, the Thorns' delicately strummed acoustic guitars, sparkling yet rootsy production, and gorgeously full three-part harmonies paint a consistently uplifting sonic landscape that's distinctly retro, yet never purely imitative. Live In Chicago
Personnel: Kurt Elling, Jon Hendricks (vocals); Von Freeman, Ed Petersen, Eddie Johnson (tenor saxophone); Laurence Hobgood (piano); Rob Amster (acoustic bass); Michael Raynor (drums); Kahil El 'Zabar (hand drums). Recorded at The Green Mill Jazz Club, Chicago, Illinois on July 14-16, 1999. Includes liner notes by Neil Tesser. LIVE IN CHICAGO was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Kurt Elling may well be carrying the scat singing torch into the new millennium. Employing a singing approach popularized by Jon Hendricks in the 1950's, Ellingseems poised to keep scat not only alive, but modern. On LIVE IN CHICAGO, he best displays this vocal improvisational technique on the complex uptempo burner, "Downtown," and the Sting tune, "Oh My God," the latter featuring percussionist Kahil El'Zabar on African hand drums. Elling delights in blistering 16th note flourishes set against the driving rhythms of the percussion. His vocal clarity and intonation are impressive, as are his energy and overall cool-headedness. Rhythmically diverse and melodically compelling, the musicians on LIVE IN CHICAGO have a natural rapport with one another; the music is marked by spontaneous group dynamic shifts, each musician lending a hand in forging remarkable band interplay. Finally, duets between Elling and his mentor, Jon Hendricks, on "Don't Get Started" and "Goin' to Chicago" are an added and endearing plus. SKU: 1029197

Visitors, The [Remastered]
ABBA: Bjorn Ulvaeus (vocals, acoustic guitar); Benny Andersson (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); Anni Frid Lyngstad, Agnetha Faltskog (vocals). Additional personnel: Lasse Wellander (acoustic & electric guitars); The Three Boys (mandolin); Jan Kling (flute, clarinet); Rutger Gunnarsson (bass); Ola Brunkert, Per Lindvall (drums); Ake Sundqvist (percussion). Recorded at Polar Music Studios, Stockholm, Sweden in 1981. Includes reissue liner notes by Carl Magnus Palm. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Jon Astley. From he muted sleeve of Abba's eighth and last album, with its pained front photo of the four bandmembers studiously avoiding one another's gaze in a darkened room, it's clear that 1981's THE VISITORS is a somber record. The disturbingly confessional minor-key masterpieces within, such as "When All Is Said and Done" and "Like An Angel Passing Through My Room," as well as the bizarre, paranoid title track, contribute to the feeling of darkness and alienation. Recorded as the band was imploding amidst romantic breakups, THE VISITORS has the beauty and melancholy of earlier ABBA albums, but only on the transcendently mournful single "One of Us"does the band reach the ecstatic heights of previous singles. Regardless, THE VISITORS stands as one of the band's strongest and most consistent albums. SKU: 6500283

Love Songs
The Carpenters: Karen Carpenter, Richard Carpenter. Producers: Richard Carpenter, Karen Carpenter, Jack Daugherty. Includes liner notes byPaul Lester. Digitally remastered by Roger Wake. Few pop song catalogs have been as underappreciated as that of the Carpenters. Though many of their best songs ("Rainy Days and Mondays," "We've Only Just Begun") were penned by equally underrated songwriter Paul Williams, pianist Richard Carpenter got his compositional licks in too, and it was his vocalist/drummer sister Karen whose sweet but unaffected vocal style cemented these tunes' popularity and helped place them in the '70s pop canon for all time. This collection, though essentially a functional "best of," focuses, as the title makes plain, on LOVE SONGS. Of course, it doesn't hurt that such tunes happened to be the duo's stock in trade. From the achingly evanescent "Close To You" to the uplifting, jubilant "Top Of The World," these songs celebrates the ups and downs of romance. Lend an ear and be reminded of the grace and beauty that existed in the musical world of Richard and Karen Carpenter. SKU: 1003466

Cheshire Cat
Blink 182: Tom Delonge (vocals, guitar); Mark Hoppus (vocals, bass); Scott Raynor (drums). Additional personnel: Matt Houts. Recorded at Westbeach Recorders, Hollywood, California. After releasing a number of 7" singles over the years, Blink 182 offers CHESHIRE CAT, its full-length album. The San Diego based group (that started out as El Cautro and the Caj'ones) has honed its playing, songwriting, andsurfboarding skills to create a fun record for all. Punky and melodic, CHESHIRE CAT is a great party album. The pace rarely lets up and the songs don't wander too far stylistically, but nothing exceeds like excess! "Does My Breath Smell?" is a funny tune of teenage ambivalence. Furiously fast, the song begs one to get up and move (and not care how you look). "Cacophony" starts off with a slow bass line leading into a melodic intro. The pace then accelerates, with speedy riffs and crashing drums. "Romeo and Rebecca" throws some slight changes and ska into the mix, while album closer "Depends" has vocalist Tom Delonge unable to control his bladder. Blink-182 is a spirited group, coming up with hysterical lyrics and tight, well produced music. They are a skate and surf band who can really play, and this album should appeal to punk and hardcore fans. SKU: 1023291

Strong Persuader
Personnel: Robert Cray (vocals, guitar); Peter Boe (keyboards); Richard Cousins (bass); David Olson (drums); Lee Spath (percussion). The Memphis Horns: Andrew Love (tenor saxophone); Wayne Jackson (trumpet, trombone). Recorded at Sage & Sound and Haywood's, Los Angeles, California. STRONG PERSUADER won a 1988 Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Recording. 1986's STRONG PERSUADER was a milestone both for Robert Cray and blues in the '80s. It earned Cray, a veteran of the Pacific Northwest blues scene, both his first solo Grammy and Top 30 hit ("Smoking Gun") along with a lift out of the blues ghetto which he'd been excelling in during recent years. As for the blues themselves, Cray infused fresh blood into a genre that had been limping along inthat particular decade. With a smooth singing style to go with an equally recognizable guitar tone, Cray developed a sound that owed as much to soul stylist O.V. Wright as it did to Texas guitarist Albert Collins (with whom Cray had won a Grammy along with Johnny Copeland the prior year). The use of the Memphis Horns strengthened the soul connection on songs such as the punchy "Nothing But A Woman" and the chugging effervescence of "Guess I Showed Her." Of course, Cray's heart lay in the blues and when he wasn't lamenting the woes of infidelity in "Right Next Door (Because Of Me)" and a bad break-up in "Still Around," his guitar playing smoldered throughout the forlorn "New Blood." Acid Bubblegum
Personnel: Graham Parker (vocals, guitar); Jimmy Destri (keyboards); Andrew Bodnar (bass); Gary Burke (drums, percussion). 1996's ACID BUBBLEGUM was quickly hailed as a return to form for pub-rock vet Graham Parker, whose albums over the preceding decade had been considerably mellower than the late-'70s bile fests that had made his name. You couldn't really call ACID BUBBLEGUM mellow. From the album title on down, the titles say it all: "Turn it Into Hate," "Sharpening Axes," "Bubblegum Cancer." The anti-record biz "Beancounter" is one of Parker's most venomous songs since the infamous "Mercury Poisoning," andthe snarling "Get Over it and Move On" suggests that Parker's too wrapped up to take his own advice. There are lighter moments, like the tributary "Obsessed With Aretha" and the tender "Girl at the End of the Pier," and the wry "They Got it Wrong (As Usual)" is more bemused than splenetic. ACID BUBLEGUM is a grand cathartic blast. SKU: 1013932

Harvest
Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar); James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Stephen Stills (vocals); Ben Keith (pedal steel guitar); Jack Nitzsche (slide guitar, piano); John Harris (piano); Tim Drummond (bass); Kenny Buttrey (drums); David Crosby, Graham Nash, The London Symphony Orchestra. Producers: Neil Young, Eliot Mazer, Jack Nitzsche. Recorded at Quadrafonic Sound Studios, Nashville, Tennessee, Broken Arrow Studio #2 & Royce Hall-UCLA, California and Barking Town Hall, London, England. Recognized as one of Young's (hence one of rock & roll's) finest albums, HARVEST put the singer on the mainstream map with the megahit "Heart Of Gold," which defined a soft folk-rock style subsequently done to death by lesser artists throughout the '70s. Trouble was, that approach had very little to do with what Young, or even HARVEST, was really about. To the contrary, this album features some of his darkest compositions, like the entropy-obsessed "Old Man" and the junkie eulogy "The Needle And The Damage Done." Deceptively laid-back-sounding country-rock plaints like "Out On The Weekend" and the title cut caress the ear unassumingly, pulling you into the more ominous subtext that is present even in the rollicking "Are You Ready For The Country." Due to back troubles, Young recorded much of this material while wearing a brace, a fact that seems audible in the tension and unease that underlies the friendly, acoustic surface of HARVEST. Happy Sad
Personnel: Tim Buckley (vocals, 12-string guitar); Lee Underwood (guitar); David Friedman (vibraphone, bass marimba); John Miller (acoustic bass); Carter C.C. Collins (congas). Recorded at Elektra Sound Recorders, Los Angeles, California. HAPPY SAD was more than just an album title for Tim Buckley. Troubled in life, he left a legacy of beautiful, hauntingly moving songs. Buckley had a piercing, mournful cry in his pliant voice, complemented by a unique jazz-folk delivery. His soaring, octave-spanning voice created an eerie mood of despair--the darker, moody side of the era. His weren't the happy-go-lucky flower-child songs, nor were they the multi-colored, paisley pop tunes of the time; his was a deep, dark-blue expression of emotion. His voice was beautiful, well-controlled, and, as exhibited in the breezy "Strange Feelin'," colored throughout by an underlying sadness. "Love From Room 109" is a freewheeling, jazzy track that portrays a man who is as emotionally frayed as he is musically disembodied. The 12-minute "Gypsy Woman" is a raging, gritty, and unbridled epic. Even the more upbeat, pop-oriented "Buzzin' Fly" conveys a sense of melancholy. The closing "To Sing A SongFor You" is straightforward, yet rendered complex by Tim's nuances. SKU: 1005114

Led Zeppelin IV
Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica); Jimmy Page (electric, acoustic & 12-string guitar, mandolin); John Paul Jones (bass, keyboards); John Bonham (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Sandy Denny (vocals); Ian Stewart (piano). Recorded at Headley, Grange, Hampshire, Island Studios, London, England; Sunset Sound, Los Angeles, California. Digitally remastered by Jimmy Page & George Marino. LED ZEPPELIN IV is the definitive Led Zeppelinrecording. It was on LED ZEPPELIN IV that the band's sound and concept, Plant's vocals, and Page's arranging skills finally crystallized into something completely distinct and original. The earthy hedonism of their earlier work was deepened and extended on rockers like "Black Dog," "Rock And Roll" and "Misty Mountain Hop." Their interest in traditional folk music (and a more tender form of sentiment) found fresh expression on "Going To California" and "The Battle Of Evermore" (with Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention). And "When The Levee Breaks" was yet another powerhouse blues. LED ZEPPELIN IV was also the recording which produced Led Zeppelin's most celebrated composition, "Stairway To Heaven". From its familiar opening chord progression, the song steadily grows in intensity, reflecting Led Zeppelin's growing interest in metaphysical imagery, gradually transforming itself from a folkish ballad into a rocking anthem. Digimortal
Fear Factory: Burton C. Bell (vocals); Dino Cazares (guitar); Christian Oloe Wolbers (bass, background vocals); Raymond Herrera (drums). Additional personnel includes: B-Real (rap vocals); Jordan Plotnikoff (spoken vocals); Rhys Fulber, John Bechdel (keyboards). Recorded at Ocean Studio, Burbank, California from Spetember 30-November 4, 2000. Fear Factory was a pioneer of new metal long before the sub-genre took shape and found its name. With DIGIMORTAL, its fourth full-length release of new material, the band revisits its brand of thinking-man's sci-fi themes and painstakingly executed musicianship. Here, the battle between man and technology finds man broken, but not beaten. In "Linchpin" and "No One" the band resolves to escape from the machines that have enslaved mankind, though these songs are faint glimmers of hope against a bleak prophecy that finds technology the new dominant paradigm. Musically, the band has grown, retainingits brutally syncopated rhythms while adding some tasty hooks and clean, melodic vocals, particularly in "Invisible Wounds." "Acres of Skin" will please thrash metal fans, while "Back the Fuck Up," featuring B. Real, is the album's metal/hip-hop showpiece. SKU: 1057066

Producer: Palle Mikkelborg. Reissue producer: Bob Belden. Recorded at Easy Sound Studios, Copenhagen, Denmark in 1984. Includes liner notes by Khephra Burns and Palle Mikkelborg. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Darcy M. Proper (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). In 1984, as his covers of tunes such as "Time After Time" exposed him to a new generation of pop fans, Miles Davis participated in one of the most ambitious recordings of his career. Trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg created several themes related to the composer's perception of Miles' field of musical colors--his AURA, so to speak--and Miles performed it with a Danish studio orchestra in Copenhagen. Clearly influenced by Miles' collaborations with Gil Evans, AURA reflects the trumpeter's profound influence on European schools of jazz, and showcases some of Miles most searching, exploratory solos of the decade. A huge orchestral chord and screaming electric guitar define the general tonality of "Intro," setting up a dancing exchange between Miles and guitarist John McLaughlin over a fragmented cycle of brass rhythmic accents. Miles trumpets "White" with a simple folkish theme, almost a shepherd's song, adding expressive echo effects as the tonality splits into component pigments, and a plaintive oboe floats above a dissonant wash of synthesizer and organ. Harp and oboe extend this theme in an almost serial manner on "Yellow," as electric guitar signals tense counterpoint between descending clarions of trumpets and dreamybellows of low brass. John McLaughlin's fleet fingered, bluesy lines signal the loping Milesian funk of "Orange," with its ding-dongy release and Miles' feathery fluttering mute work and celebratory open horn, while "Red" explores a contrasting flamenco-style mode at a spooky slow grind as Miles doubles up on top. Davis' blossoming horn and Niels Pedersen's expressive acoustic bass expand on the drone with "Green." "Blue" finds Miles dancing on top of a spacey reggae groove, then crossfades from layered keyboards into a deep brass and woodwind choir, ending with a children's theme amidst harp and calliope sounds. "Electric Red" reprises the slow Spanish dances of "Red" with added orchestral color and an insistent fuzz gui SKU: 1044949

There's A Poison Goin' On [PA]
This reissue contains 5 bonus tracks. Public Enemy: Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Terminator X, Professor Griff. Additional personnel: Kyle Jason (vocals). Recorded in 1999. Includes liner notes by Chuck D. After more than a decade as one of hip-hop's most pioneering and successful rap acts, Public Enemy forged new ground once again in the music business with 1999's THERE'S A POISON GOIN' ON. The album was one of the first feature releases available exclusively on the internet and is PE's loudest, most forceful record in years. Though the album does contain the radio-friendly "Do You Wanna Go Our Way," Public Enemy proves that it hasn't lost its vitriol with tracks like "Crash," "Last Mass of the Caballeros," and "LSD." Flavor-Flav is back in full jokster mode on such tracks as "41:19" and "What What." And of course, what's a PE album without controversy "Swindler's Lust," in which Chuck D criticizes greed-driven record companies, has drawn considerable fire. For what it's worth, Chuck D and PublicEnemy are as relevant today as they were when they first appeared on the hip-hop scene. SKU: 4130974

Sir John Alot Of [Remastered]
Personnel: John Renbourn (guitar); Ray Warleigh (flute); Terry Cox (finger cymbals, African drums, glockenspiel). Recorded at Sound Techniques, London. The title of 1969's SIR JOHNALOTa is actually longand wordy in the finest Joycean fashion. Whatever you call it, this collection of traditional-style songs and ballads is John Renbourn's finest solo album. Acoustic six and 12-string guitars, played in Renbourn's inimitable style, accompany period instruments, reeds, and even a bit of sitar and Indian percussion. Renbourn's remarkable skills are on display throughout, but this is not merely a display of chops. The playing is entirely in service to the song. When Renbourn reels off a dazzlingly fleet-fingered solo on a piece like "White Fishes" or "Sweet Potato," it's because that's what the song needed. The album gets progressively jazzier as it goes on, until the closing "Seven Up" suggests Django Reinhardt set loose in a medieval fair. Wonderful stuff, and one of the finest guitar-instrumental albums ever. SKU: 1078081

Bat Out Of Hell [Remastered]
This remastered version of BAT OUT OF HELL includes two previously unreleased bonus tracks. Personnel: Meat Loaf, Ellen Foley (vocals); Todd Rundgren (guitar, keyboards, percussion, background vocals); Edgar Winter (saxophone); Roy Bittan (piano, keyboards); Steve Margoshes, Cheryl Hardwick (piano); Jim Steinman (keyboards, percussion); Roger Powell (keyboards); Kasim Sultan (bass, background vocals); Max Weinberg, John Wilcox (drums); Marvin Lee (percussion); Rory Dodd, Phil Rizzuto (background vocals). Recordedat Bearsville Sound, Bearsville, New York; Utopia Sound, Lake Hill, New York; The Hit Factory, New York, New York; House Of Music, West Orange, New Jersey; Nassau Colliseum, Hempstead, New York on Septermber 1, 1978. Pomp and circumstance of the grandest order for the multi-platinum Meat Loaf and his songwriting mentor, Jim Steinman. The grandiose intro to the title track was indication enough of the tone of the album, with songs stretching out over what at times seemed like musical infinity. Steinman set his songs in evocative wastelands populated by full orchestras and small-town weirdos, 'Paradise By The Dashboard Light' an entire two-handed play in itself, and 'Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad', an overblown symphony of regret and unrequited love. Between them, they pretty much provided the balance of the album. A huge success, only to be repeated by its follow-up in 1993. SKU: 1057569

Fever
It's more than just journalistic shorthand to refer to Kylie Minogue as the European Madonna. She's been at it as long as the Material Girl, and her mix of sexy style and dance-pop sound is very much in league with that of her American counterpart. The catch here is that, while Minogue had previously only been a star in Europe, FEVER represents her American breakthrough. Not surprisingly, the sound of FEVER will appeal to fans of Madonna's MUSIC album. It's full of bubbly synths, amiably poppy melodies, club beats and sensual vocal stylings. If anything, Minogue comes off as slightly less hard-edged than you-know-who, more concerned with immersing herself in the songs and production than in projecting her larger-than-life personality. That kind of attitude can only aid in the making of a successful pop record, which is the most accurate description of FEVER. SKU: 1076979

Close To The Edge [Remastered]
Yes: Steve Howe (vocals, guitar); Chris Squire (vocals, bass); Jon Anderson (vocals); Rick Wakeman (keyboards); Bill Bruford (drums, percussion). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Taken as a musical wholethis suite of three parts is very sound, but what does begin to jar are some of the lyrics. In the 90s, even with the hippie revival and new age travellers, lyrics such as 'my eyes convinced eclipsed with the younger moon attained with love' do make you shake your head and say out loud, 'whaaaat are they talking about'? Yes have been shabbily treated by the press over the years yet their continuing popularity is in some way a vindication of their talent. Steve Howe's guitar sounds confident, Squire's bass wanders and thunks throughout, but what makes the album so good is the highly melodic theme that runs through it. SKU: 1005271

Familiar To Millions
Oasis: Liam Gallagher (vocals); Noel Gallagher (guitar, background vocals); Gem (guitar); Andy Bell (bass); Alan White (drums). Recorded live at Wembley Stadium, London, England on July 21, 2000. Rife with tossed-off obscenities, FAMILIAR TO MILLIONS captures Manchester's favorite sons shining in an element whose dynamic vibe is as much a result of the crowd's rabid feedback as it is of the band's tight delivery. Opening with the shambling sample-heavy instrumental "F**kin' In The Bushes," Oasis takes an electrifying stroll through their canon focusing heavily on their first two albums, DEFINITELY MAYBE and (WHAT'S THE STORY) MORNING GLORY. For a change, frontman Liam Gallagher is on his best behavior which means he stayed on stage for the whole show, admonished brother Noel to write more songs like "Supersonic" as his mates kicked into the intro and dedicated "Cigarettes & Alcohol" to the rowdies in the front row. In addition to playing larger-than-life versions of "Live Forever" and the B-Sides "Acquiesce" and "Step Out," Oasis flipped off the bad-boy switch long enough to deliver a stunning reading of "Don't Look Back In Anger" that attained another level thanks to the stadium full of fans providing the chorus. A neat trifecta of "Champagne Supernova" along with covers of The Beatles ("Helter Skelter") and Neil Young ("Hey Hey, My My [Into The Black]") neatly provides an over-the-top encore. SKU: 1064148

In Search Of The Lost Chord
Also available on cassette with ON THE THRESHOLD OF A DREAM. NOTES: Moody Blues: Justin Hayward (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, 12-string guitar, sitar, harpsichord, piano, Mellotron, bass, percussion, tablas); Mike Pinder (acoustic guitar, cello, autoharp, harpsichord, Mellotron, piano, bass); John Lodge (acoustic guitar, cello, bass, tambourine, snare drum, background vocals); Ray Thomas (C flute, alto flute, soprano saxophone, background vocals); Graeme Edge (piano, drums, timpani, tambourine, tablas). Originally released on Deram (711). Includes liner notes by John Reed. After helping lay the groundwork for concept albums and progressive rock with 1967's orchestra-enhanced suite DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED, the Moodies retrenched for the follow-up. They abandoned the orchestra but kept their sound as rich as before by playing a multitude of instruments themselves, including everything from sitar to cello to oboe. At the time, it was remarkable enough for these instruments to appear on a rock record, much less to be played by the band itself. The string-laden conceptual pieces of DAYS were replaced by shorter, more concise songs that leaned more toward Beatlesque pop and displayed a pronounced Eastern influence. Graham Edge's short spoken-word pieces provide a properly arty framework for the Moodies' blend of swooping mellotron, haunting flute, and rich, multi-tracked harmonies. The slightly Hollies-ish "Ride my Seesaw," one of the band's strongest rockers, is a highlight. Flutist/vocalist Ray Thomas provides the quirky Britishness so essential to '60s UK pop-rock with his music-hall-on-acid number "Dr. Livingstone I Presume." The soaring harmonies of "Legend of a Mind" work in praise of Timothy Leary and his "trips toastral planes." IN SEARCH OF THE LOST CHORD is the most exotic, trippy album in the Moodies' catalog.
