Specials, The [ECD] [Remastered]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The Specials: Terry Hall, Neville Staples (vocals); Lynval Golding, Roddy Radiation (guitar); Jerry Dammers (organ); Horace Gentleman (bass); John "Brad" Bradbury (drums). Additional personnel: Rico Rodriguez, Dick Cuthell (horns). Producers: Elvis Costello, The Specials. Reissue producers: Nigel Reeve, Rob Owen. Includes liner notes by Adrian Thrill. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Produced by Elvis Costello, this self-titled 1979 debut quickly became gospel to the wave of ska then sweeping England. Infusing the catchy, jumpy music developed by artists like the Skatalites and Prince Buster a generation before them with punk's youthful disenfranchisement, bands like the Specials, the Selecterand Madness gave birth to a movement, one which strove for such noble goals as racial unity (then a particularly sore issue in Britain) and non-violence. THE SPECIALS states these ideals magnificently, wrapping them in tunes bursting with energy--tight, sincere and masterful. Ska's musical style is an easy one to discern--syncopated rhythm guitar, infectious rhythms, horn sections a-go-go; vocals often reach the level of a rant, and the lyrics are usually of utmost import. The album's opener and by far its most recognized tune "A Message To You Rudy" spoke frankly and directly to those youngsters tempted towards the gangster life. "Do the Dog" is more outright social statement--an earnest appeal not to fall into life's easy, safe categories, be they military or social. Societal issues of every stripe are attacked--from "Stupid Marriage" to "Concrete Jungle." SKU: 1070314

Bumpin' [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Wes Montgomery (guitar); Don Sebesky (arranger); Roger Kellaway (piano); Bob Cranshaw (bass); Helcio Milito, Grady Tate (drums). Recorded at Van Gelder Recording Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on May 16-20, 1965. Originally released on Verve (8625). Includes liner notes by Chuck Taylor and Don Sebesky. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of the Verve Master Edition series. In his liner notes for the reissue of BUMPIN', arranger Don Sebesky describes how intimidated Wes Montgomery got by the presence of all the Juilliard-trained musicians in the studio. So Sebesky and producer Creed Taylor had Montgomery go in and record with just a rhythm section, keeping sketches on hand of where the orchestrations would fill things out after the fact. This, says Sebesky, put Montgomery's well-known smile back on his face, and you can hear this in the tracks. Here the guitarist sounds relaxed and extroverted, like he's got room to play. Montgomery always included originaltunes and other jazz composers' work in among the standards he chose: here it's Dizzy Gillespie's "Con Alma," along with his own title cut, and "Tear It Down," recorded with just the rhythm section of Roger Kellaway, Bob Cranshaw and Grady Tate. While you don't quite get the fire-breathing interaction and stretching out of Montgomery's Riverside releases, there's cool, low-flame cooking going on during the title track, the Gillespie tune, Sebesky's blues "Musty," and others. The ballads give Montgomery a chance to provide some lush chord-melody work, particularly on the original "Mi Cosa." SKU: 1006080

Pyramid
Cannonball Adderley Quintet: Julian "Cannonball" Adderley (soprano & alto saxophones); Nat Adderley (cornet); Hal Galper (electric piano); Walter Booker (acoustic bass); Roy McCurdy (drums). Additional personnel:Jimmy Jones (piano); George Duke (acoustic & electric clavinets, ARP synthesizer); Phil Upchurch (guitar). Producers: Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, David Axelrod. Originally released on Fantasy (9455). Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1997, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley California). Julian "Cannonball" Adderley's final studio album, PYRAMID, is a remarkable farewell. The 1974 release, recorded with a septet lineup featuring cornet player Nat Adderley and clavinet player George Duke--both of whom would go on to lead their own combos later in the decade--features Adderley's alto and soprano saxes in a funky brand of fusion. The music never succumbs to the lumbering excesses the fusion style was beginning to become known for by this time. In fact, much of the charm of PYRAMID is due to its unusual brevity. The entire eight-track album is over in 23-and-a-half minutes. Considering that other fusion players were releasing single compositions that ran twice as long, PYRAMID is almost like a punk album! The centerpiece is the three-part "Suite Cannon," a complex yet swinging affair full of Adderley's typical grace and fire. SKU: 1004238

Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan And Double Trouble, The
Full performer name: Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble. Personnel includes: Stevie Ray Vaughan (vocals, guitar); Reese Wynans (keyboards); Tommy Shannon (bass); Chris Layton (drums). Recorded between 1980 & 1990. Includes liner notes by Andy Aledort. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Like a comet streaking across the sky, the late Stevie Ray Vaughan's timehere was snuffed out far too quickly. Although other posthumous compilations have honored his legacy, including a pair of GREATEST HITS collections and a number of live releases, THE ESSENTIAL serves as a lighter alternative to the heftiness of the SRV box set. Vauhan was blessed with a distinct tone and a versatility on guitar that often found him going from bending strings just short of breaking to lightly playing with the delicacy of a baby's touch, often within the same song. This two-CD set does a fine job of representing the late legend's broad range. Always generous in crediting his myriad of influences, (Double Trouble's name was taken from an Otis Rush song), SRV ended up covering artists ranging from Buddy Guy ("Mary Had A Little Lamb"), Earl King ("Come On [Part III]"), and Hank Ballard ("Look At Little Sister") to Jimi Hendrix ("Little Wing") and close friend Doyle Bramhall ("Change It"). Live, Vaughan's might was equally impressive, and he still astounds with a segment of his breakthrough 1982 Montreux performance ("Rude Mood/Hide Away") along with in-concert versions of "Superstition" and "Voodoo Child [Slight Return]". Attack Of The Grey Lantern
Mansun: Paul Draper (vocals, guitar, piano, synthesizer); Dominic Chad (guitar, piano, synthesizer, background vocals); Stove (bass); Andi Rathbone (drums). Engineers: Mike Hunter, Ian Caple, Ronnie Stone. The second wave of '90s Britpop starts here, typified by Mansun's thematic grandeur and glam-sized orchestral maneuvers that first-wavers like Blur and Oasis intentionally left behind. Only the melodies remain grounded in the familiar UK rock tradition. Led by singer/songwriter Paul Draper, Mansun, while grounded in thegood old guitar-bass-drums aesthetic, is all about sonic excess--imagine Queen with a punky attitude. Guitars come in every imaginable form and texture, strings swirl all over, drum-machines echo live beats, synths blip with New Wave bravado, organs underpin nearly every melody. Hippo noises and church bells are simply the cherries on a multi-track production sundae that is intensely calorie-heavy. Draper, meanwhile, struts around coolly cooing lyrics about an odd assortment of characters that belong in perverse short stories. SKU: 1000902

Pussy Cats [Remastered]
This 25th anniversary edition of PUSSY CATS includes four bonus tracks. Personnel includes: Harry Nilsson (vocals); Ringo Starr, Keith Moon, Jim Keltner, Bobby Keys, Klaus Voorman, Danny Kortchmar, Sneeky Pete. Includes liner notes by Andrea Sheridan. During John Lennon's separation from Yoko Ono in the mid-'70s, he infamously palled around L.A. with Harry Nilsson. Amidst the drinking and carousing, the two did go into the studio, where Lennon acted as producer. What emerged was PUSSY CATS, an album that was met with some confusion at the time of its initial release. The set features a mix of rock & roll oldies, Nilsson originals, and covers of Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" and Jimmy Cliff's "Many Rivers to Cross." In the years since its release, PUSSY CATS has aged gracefully. It's a wholly committed series of performances by Nilsson, whose skills as a vocal interpreter were often overshadowed by his own songwriting prowess. It's alsoa warmly rendered portrait of good times in the recording studio, spontaneity, and friendship. Nilsson and Lennon's usual session crew are on hand, including Klaus Voorman, Ringo Starr, and Jesse Ed Davis. Delightful bonus tracks include three by Nilsson: "Down by the Sea," "The Flying Saucer Song," and "Turn Out the Light." SKU: 1076725

Gone In 60 Seconds
Original music composed by Trevor Rabin. The soundtrack set behind GONE IN 60 SECONDS, the Nicholas Cage/Angelina Jolie car theft, uh, vehicle, pumps a pulse of pounding pop, funk, soul, electronic and hip-hop. The collection stands as one of the more flowing mixed artist compilations. There's logic in the song order, and at times the album even sounds like a solo artist's. Kicking off with one of the odder pairings, TheCult makes a stab at a Dianne Warren original, "Painted on My Heart." British jack-of-all-trades Gomez eases its funky "Machismo" right in besides Moby's gospel-tinged "Flower," while Method Man & Redman, one of the best collaborations since peanut butter met jelly, contribute the wicked old school electronica hip-hop jam "Da Rockwilder." M. Doughty, late of Soul Coughing, provides vocals on techno wizard BT's infectious "Never Gonna Come Back Down." For those in search of familiar material, there's DMX's anthem "Party Up," Apollo Four Forty's twisted electro-novelty tune "Stop The Rock," and a new take on Citizen King's hit "Better Days." GONE IN 60 SECONDS is a consistently enjoyable soundtrack. SKU: 1037539

Nellyville [PA]
Personnel includes: Nelly, Murphy Lee, Ali, Kyjuan, Freeway, Beanie Sigel, King Jacob (rap vocals); Justin Timberlake, Kelly Rowland (vocals); Cedric The Entertainer, La La (spoken vocals); Luis Conte (percussion). Producers include: Waiel "Wally" Yagham, The Neptunes, Jason "Jay E" Epperson, The Trackboyz, Ryan Bowser. "Hot In Herre" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Rap Male Solo Performance. "Dilemma" (w/ Kelly Rowland) won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. NELLYVILLE was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and Best Rap Album. "Dilemma" (w/ Kelly Rowland) was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Record Of The Year. NELLYVILLE could fairly be billed as its creator's coming-of-age album, with a sophisticated sheen that's a world and several million dollars away from its predecessor, the hugely successful COUNTRY GRAMMAR. Confidence and an undeniable musicality are the watchwords here, from the opening title track which is a both half-sung, half-rapped statement of first principles and a tour through the artist's psyche. The infectious club track "Hot in Herre" should bring fans and Nelly neophytes alike running with its old-school chorus, while the tight, steamy textures of "Pimp Juice" show Nelly as a master of insinuating vocalese. There are the usual guest appearances, notably from Justin Timberlake on the rap/pop crossover "Work It," where Timberlake's smooth vocals are expertly used to provide a cool, stylish counterpoint to Nelly's urgent rapping. Beanie Sigel guests on the remix of "Roc the Mic" whilethe take-no-prisoners stomp of "On the Grind" featuring King Jacob is a reminder, if any were necessary, that no matter how sophisticated his music gets, the streets of St. Louis will always be Nelly's spiritual home. Brothers In Arms
Dire Straits: Mark Knopfler (vocals, guitar); Hal Lindes (guitar); Guy Fletcher, Alan Clark(keyboards); John Illsley (bass); Terry Williams (drums). Additional personnel: Sting (vocals). Recorded at Air Studios, Monserrat, West Indies. All tracks have been digitally remastered. BROTHERS IN ARMS found Dire Straits at the peak of a long climb in the music industry. After an auspicious debut with DIRE STRAITS, they stuggled on through personnel changes and shifting musical tastes. Knopfler's work with Bob Dylan (SLOW TRAIN COMING and some touring) and the band's appearance at Live Aid helped to keep their recognition high. This album proved to be the payoff, as "Money For Nothing" hit number 1, and the second single, "Walk Of Life" also made the top-10. SKU: 1001253

Does This Look Infected [PA]
Sum 41: Sirbiznatch, Cope, Stevo Dirty Poo, The Honorable Sir Captain Brownsound Of The First Airborne, Regiment, Heavyweight Champion PHD. Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York. Often lumped unfairly into the same pop-punk bag asGreen Day, and sometimes even dismissed as nothing more than A Blink-182 rip-off, Sum 41 definitively separates itself from the pack with DOES THIS LOOK INFECTED?. Sporting a level of sheer musicianship that dwarfs that of the aforementioned groups, the band powers through all 12 tracks with a machine-like efficiency and a thrash metalesque knack for rhythmic precision and complexity. In fact, there are instrumental passages here that could easily pass for MASTER OF PUPPETS-era Metallica or even vintage Anthrax. To be sure, there are the usual heaping helpings of catchy melodies and Descendents-approved high harmonies throughout, but DOES THIS LOOK INFECTED? reveals an increased emphasis on the punk half of the punk-pop equation. Echoes of pioneering hardcore/metal hybrid bands like Killing Time, Leeway, and Bad Brains abound, and the record consequently has a tougher, more substantial feel than any of Sum 41's previous efforts. One Beat
Sleater-Kinney: Carrie Brownstein, Corin Tucker (vocals, guitar); Janet Weiss (vocals, drums, percussion). Additional personnel: John Goodmanson (E-bow guitar); Jen Charowhas (violin); Brent Arnold (cello); Mike Wayland (alto & tenor saxophones); Russ Scott (trumpet); Steve Fisk (keyboards); Stephen Trask (synthesizer, background vocals); Sam Coomes (theremin). Recorded at Jackpot! Studio, Portland, Oregon in March & April 2002. When a decent-sized hype machine shone a spotlight on Sleater-Kinney around the time of 1997's DIG ME OUT, their sound was fresh and invigorating, but at its core starkly simple, revolving around fairly basic, yet oddly bewitching three-minute punk songs injected with the fevered vocals of Carrie Brownstein and Corrin Tucker, backed by the Janet Weiss' frenzied beat. Five years later, two serviceable, if not earth-shattering, records proved prelude to the remarkable evolution of the stunning and complex ONE BEAT. Drawing from some of the best elements of punk innovators like Mission Of Burma and The Fall, the trio creates unpredictable yet enthralling songs replete with the band's trademark dialectic razor-blade vocals countered with honeyed harmony. ONE BEAT opens simply enough as insistent drums are overlaid with a repeated guitar riff before the vocal kicks in with lines like "if you were Thomas Edison, would you invent the world for me." But somewhere in the midst of the brilliantly inconsistent "Far Away" the album breaks ranks into a beguiling rock & roll puzzle. By the time a synth wails in on the dance-punk of "Oh!" or horns sneak into the background of the somewhat rapturous "Step Aside," it's apparent thatthe already-acclaimed Sleater-Kinney have themselves the most accomplished record of their career. Fantastic Expedition Of Dillard & Clark...plus, The
Personnel: Douglas Dillard (guitar, banjo, violin); Gene Clark (guitar, harmonica); Bernie Leadon (guitar, banjo); Don Beck (dobro, mandolin); Chris Hillman (mandolin); Andy Belling (electric harpsichord); David Jackson (acoustic bass). Includes liner notes by Bob Garcia. Given its personnel and 1969 release date, it should come as no surprise that THE FANTASTIC EXPEDITION OF DILLARD & CLARK has earned a hallowed place in the history of country rock. The pedigree of the front men is impressive enough: Gene Clark, founding member of the Byrds, had fully established his country-folk bona fides by this time, while Doug Dillard had spent much of the decade with bluegrass luminaries TheDillards. Future Eagle Bernie Leadon and Flying Burrito Brother Chris Hillman help round out FANTASTIC EXPEDITION'S impressive roster. Add the time and place--1969 L.A., ground zero for the impending country-rock explosion--and you begin to understand this album's historical context. Thankfully, the content of FANTASTIC EXPEDITION is every bit as good as its peripherals suggest. Given Dillard's background, a bluegrass feel predominates and, occasionally, takes over (as on the album's sole cover, Flatt and Scrugg's "Git in Line Brother"). But it is Clark's songwriting, along with warm, laid-back arrangements and excellent playing that lifts this album above the fray and into the pantheon. No wonder The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, and others often cited FANTASTIC EXPEDITION as a major source of inspiration. SKU: 1066001

Super Hits
This is part of Legacy's Super Hits series. Blood, Sweat & Tears' entry in Columbia/Legacy's SUPER HITS line of budget compilations is a serviceable, though brief, compilation of hits and album tracks by one of the leading standard-bearers of late '60s/early '70s horn rock. Unlike most Blood, Sweat & Tears compilations, SUPER HITS includes selections from the group's first, best, and most experimental album, the Al Kooper-led CHILD IS FATHER TO THE MAN. "I Can't Quit Her" is clearlythis disc's highlight, a powerful, jazz-inflected blues-rocker. Kooper left after that groundbreaking album, and with the addition of Canadian belter David Clayton-Thomas, the group settled into a string of blaring, brass-heavy, undeniably catchy hit singles, including "Spinning Wheel," "You've Made Me So Very Happy," "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," and the Laura Nyro-penned "And When I Die," all of which are included here.
