On And On
Personnel: Jack Jackson (vocals, guitar); Merlo Podlewski (bass); Adam Topol (drums, percussion). Recorded at Mango Tree, Hawaii. Something of a slacker renaissance man, prototypical mellow surfer-dude Jack Johnson is not only a BILLBOARD-charting recording artist, but also a world-champion athlete and award-winning documentary filmmaker. On his second full-length album, ON AND ON, the sandy-toed singer/songwriter delivers a bare bones set of acoustic folk rock as soft and soothing as the Hawaiian breezes that serve as his inspiration. As on his debut disc, BRUSHFIRE FAIRYTALES, Johnson serves up a groovy, yet slightly melancholy stew in his trademark breathy voice, which at its best recalls everyone from Steve Miller to Chet Baker to Evan Dando of The Lemonheads. This time around, however, the vocalist/guitarist isn't afraid to gently stir pinches of reggae, hip-hop, and Harry Belafonte style pop-calypso into his usual hippie jam-band roux. Mario Caldato Jr.'s ultra-sparse, live-sounding production carefully reveals the subtle sadness that lurks behind evenJohnson's poppiest tunes, making ON AND ON the perfect album for a midnight beach party on the last night of summer vacation. Imagine
Personnel: Eva Cassidy (vocals, guitar); Keith Grimes (electric guitar); Bruno Nasta (violin); Kent Wood (sythesizer strings); Les Owen (saxophone); Lenny Williams (piano); Chris Izzi (keyboards); Kent Wood (organ, synthesizer); Larry Melton, Chris Biondo (bass); Adrian Green, Racie McLeod (drums). Recorded between 1987 & 1996. Includes liner notes by Bill Straw. Following Eva Cassidy's 1996 death from cancer at the age of 33, word-of-mouth popularity in America by way of England led to a number of stellar posthumous releases mixing live and studio recordings. 2002's IMAGINE follows the same path and is no less impressive. Front and center is the late D.C. native's stellar vocal timbre that allowed her to interpret a wide range of songwriters. In the studio, she easily moved from a slinky version of Little Willie John's "Fever" (featuring interesting support on fiddle by brother Dan) to a soaring interpretation of "I Can Only Be Me," a Stevie Wonder composition originally recorded by Keith John for the SCHOOL DAZE soundtrack. The most notable in-concert performances featured here come from intimate Annapolis venues like the King of France Tavern and defunct Pearl's. These gorgeous solo acoustic readings include the standard "Danny Boy" and Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain." Most fitting is Cassidy's take on "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" by Sandy Denny, a singer she's most often compared to. In light of the acclaimed success of thestylistically similar Norah Jones, the mind boggles at the heights Eva Cassidy might have reached had she not died at such a young age. SKU: 1074206

Full Clip (A Decade Of Gang Starr)
Gang Starr: Guru (rap vocals); DJ Premier (programming, scratches). Additional personnel includes: Total, Lil Dap, Jeru The Damaja, Big Shug, Freddie Foxxx, K-Ci & JoJo, M.O.P., Scarface, W.C., Rakim, The Lady Of Rage, Kurupt, Inspectah Deck, Nice & Smooth, Scarface (rap vocals). Principally recorded at D&D Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Chairman Mao. Rarely do hiphopacts stand the test of time. But Gang Starr's fusion of the underground killer beats of DJ Premier with Guru's smooth vocal stylings has always stayed true to its game. FULL CLIP compiles Gang Starr's ten-year run of hits. One of the things you notice about the double-disk set, packed as it is with such favorites as "DWYCK," "Just to Get A Rep," and "Mass Appeal," is that all 32 songs are home-runs. Every track here has earned its "greatest hits" status. Check out the rare, cool remixes of "Manifest," "You Know My Steez" (featuring The Lady of Rage and Kurupt), and "The Militia II" (with cameos from WC and Rakim). There's even a blazing new cut in the title track. FULL CLIP packs more ammunition than one would need in a prolonged war. SKU: 1041686

Available on Mini Disc on Columbia (30322). NOTES: Also available with BIG BROTHER & THE HOLDING COMPANY FEATURING JANIS JOPLIN, CHEAP THRILLS, I GOT DEM OL' KOZMIC BLUES AGAIN MAMA! and bonus disc RARE PEARLS in BOX OF PEARLS: THE JANIS JOPLIN COLLECTION. Also available with CHEAP THRILLS and I GOT DEM OL' KOZMIC BLUES AGAIN MAMA! in a 3-CD set. Janis Joplin & Full Tilt Boogie: Janis Joplin (vocals, acoustic guitar); John Till (guitar); Richard Bell (piano); Ken Pearson (organ); Brad Campbell (bass); Clark Pierson (drums); Vince Mitchell, Phil Badella, John Cooke (background vocals). Additional personnel: Bobby Womack (acoustic guitar); Bobbie Hall (congas bongos); Sandra Crouch (tambourine). Producer: Paul A. Rothchild. Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Recorded on September 4, 5 & 25, 1970. Originally released on Columbia (9700). Includes liner notes by John Bryne Cook. Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). PEARL is a bluesy, organ-drenched answer to the flower-child sound of the free-and-easy 60's. As a backing band, Full Tilt Boogie replaces some of Big Brother's looseness with polish and control, yet they groove hard with the fire that Janis demands. Guitarist John Till's riffs, chords andsolos are exciting and tightly executed. "A Woman Left Lonely" and Bobby Womack's "Trust Me" are rain-on-the-windows ballads that glow with Janis' gritty vocal brilliance, while "Move Over" and "Half Moon" are surely some of her funkiest cuts ever. This is an excellent, if somewhat overlooked part of Joplin's discography. SKU: 5067448

Best Of Muddy Waters 1947-1955, The
All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Chess' 50th Anniversary Collection series. Imagine what the world might have been like without Muddy Waters. It's not a pretty thought. His contributions to the electric blues-and, by extension, to theadvent of rock & roll-are inestimable, and his beautifully soulful vocals and slashing slide guitar work are the stuff of which legend is made. This collection, which gathers together Waters' early, seminal work for Chess Records between 1947 and 1955, is almost to good to be true. Improving on the wildly popular BEST OF MUDDY WATERS with eight more tracks (20 to BEST OF's 12) and superior, remastered sound, this set is simply IT. "His best" is no exaggeration; all the critical tracks are here: "Long Distance Call," "Baby Please Don't Go," "I'm Your Hootchie Cootchie Man," "I Just Want To Make Love To You"...the list goes on. Such incendiary, top-drawer bluesmen as harp player Little Walter, bassist Willie Dixon, and guitarist Jimmy Rogers add fuel to the fire. With the exception of the multi-disc Chess box set, one would be hard pressed to find a better collection by the legendary Waters under one seal. Essential. SKU: 1019267

First Session (Limited Edition)
FIRST SESSION contains all previously unreleased tracks. Personnel: Grant Green (guitar); Sonny Clark, Wynton Kelly (piano); Paul Chambers, Butch Warren (bass); Philly Joe Jones, Billy Higgins (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on November 16, 1960 and October 27, 1961. Includes liner notes by Bob Belden. Digitally remastered by Ron McMaster. This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series. At the recommendation of saxophonist Lou Donaldson, guitarist Grant Green from St. Louis was signed to Blue Note in 1960. For Green's first outing as a leader, Alfred Lion assembled Miles Davis's former rhythm section for what was sure to be a stellar session. However, to Lion's ears anyway, the day was not as fruitful as he had hoped. But for those with a keen ear for Green's stylish guitar work, it is fortunate that the label has finally seen fit to release the session after more than 40 years. The trio of Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones in the era of this recording was infallible. They swing hard, support the soloist tastefully, and are tighter than a turtle's belly button. Green, for his first time out as a solo star, plays confidently and oozes with blues-drenchedstyle. What, then, could have been wrong? We may never know. Luckily, Green fans can now judge for themselves after all this time. Also included are two takes of the classic "Woody 'N' You" from a year later with the ace rhythm team of Sonny Clark, Butch Warren, and Billy Higgins. SKU: 1056495

Gravity
Our Lady Peace: Raine Maida (vocals); Steve Mazur (guitar); Duncan Coutts (bass); Jeremy Taggart (drums). Recorded at Rock's Plantation Studios, Hawaii in 2001 & 2002. While Canadian rock heroes Our Lady Peace have made a name for themselves as post-grunge hard rockers (albeit with a penchant for infectious songcraft), rarely straying from their hard-hitting strengths, GRAVITY is an impressively varied effort. The undeniable pop-hook choruses of "Do You Like It" and "Innocent" are perhaps even more unabashedly catchy than the band's previous radio successes. The acoustic-guitar-driven balladry of "Somewhere Out There" intersperses contemplative folk-rock verses with agrand, Creed-like chorus ("Not Enough" bears similar dynamics). The aforementioned "Innocent" starts out with syncopated, programmed beats before giving way to full-fledged human drumming. Amidst all this relative eclecticism, the band still manages to stick in plenty of blazing guitars, cannon-like drums, and angst-ridden vocals for their faithful fans. SKU: 1074984

Beat
Bowery Electric: Lawrence Chandler (vocals, guitar, keyboards, programming); Martha Schwendener (vocals, keyboards, bass). Additional personnel: Wayne Magruder (drums). Recorded at Studio 45, Hartford, Connecticutt. New York's Bowery Electric was among the first six-string-slinging crews to pick up on the daring dance cues left by My Bloody Valentine's "Soon" and by Seefeel's QUIQUE. Finding themselves without a full-time drummer, Electricians Lawrence Chandler and Martha Schwendener supplemented their overcast guitar drone, lazy-lidded vocals, and plangent basslines with beat loops scavenged from scratchy hip-hop records. BEAT presents an appealingly static hybrid sound, with the rhythm track locked in a slow skulk, the mass-effected instruments bellowing low-radiation feedback at near-ambient levels, and the voices intoning somewhere in between. On "Empty Words," "Coming Down," and "Black Light," pro tem trapsman Wayne Magruder steps in with an impressive real-time simulation of the trebly and circular sampler-spun rhythms. Flying solo on tracks like "Looped," "Under the Sun," and "Postscript," Chandler and Schwendener follow the formula of drowning, droning, ice-blue deluge-of-sound swells and bass trawl that defined Bowery Electric's eponymous 1995 debut. But they're keenly aware that BEAT has a foot in new terrain. The rhythmic revelations of the title track, "Without Stopping," and especially the superb "Fear of Flying" are too exciting to ignore, casting the diefor further exploration of beat-based possibilities--including 1997's BEAT remixes, VERTIGO. Make Up The Breakdown
Hot Hot Heat: Dustin Hawthorne, Steve Bays, Paul Hawley, Dante DeCaro. OK, name a band of Canadians with ska/punk/New Wave overtones, snappy lyrics and a catchy way with a tune. If you were thinking Barenaked Ladies, think again--Hot Hot Heat are all of the above, but with the added advantage of Steve Bays's patented Ray Davies-in-a-blender hiccupped vocals and a musical edge given extra depth by producer Jack Endino's nuanced production. There are echoes of '80s skinny-tie pop here, to be sure, but the combination of quirkiness, energy, and wit most obviously recalls British new wavers XTC and their particular brand of multi-layered new wave/art-rock. MAKE UP THE BREAKDOWN, despite being Hot Hot Heat's first full-length album, is a bright, assured blast of fresh air that's atits dayglo best on tracks such as the tricky pop of "Naked in the City Again" and the punky "Bandages." But the strong hint that Hot Hot Heat have more to offer than your everyday retro-wavers is contained in the wiry guitar sounds of "Save Us S.O.S." and the atmospheric closer "Cairo," as well as in the off-kilter rhythms and smart, wry lyrics that pop up throughout. So Much For The Afterglow
Everclear: Art Alexakis (vocals, guitar, steel guitar, keyboards, banjo, mandolin, toy piano); Craig Montoya (vocals, mandolin, keyboards, bass); Greg Eklund (vocals, slide whistle, keyboards, drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Paul Cantelon (violin); Gerri Stutyak (cello); Derron Nuhfer (saxophone); Neal Avron (trumpet); Buddy Schnaub (trombone); Rami Jaffee (organ). Recorded at A&M Studios, Rondor Studios, Los Angeles, California; Ocean Studios, Burbank, California; Whitehorse Studios, Portland, Oregon, in November 1996, January and March 1997. "El Distorto De Melodica"was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. On their follow up to their hit album SPARKLE AND FADE, Everclear continue to ride the wave of Pacific Northwest grunge that brought them their original success. Mixing three-chord rock and straightforward lyrics about the seamier side of Generation X, Everclear achieve an earthiness that the Foo Fighters and other grunge survivors aim for but never quite seem to attain. Leader Art Alexakis sings about people besieged by unfortunate circumstances. When he sings "They have never been poor/They have never had the joy of a welfare christmas" In "I Will Buy You A New Life", he makes his characters' plight real with the understanding and insight of someone who's been there himself. Some of the most effective moments come when he draws on his own experiences; his absentee father and his mother's nervous breakdown are each the subject of powerful songs, and when he sings "You wouldn't even know me since you went away" in "Normal Like You" it is unclear whether he is talking about his father, an old friend, or himself. Distillation
Personnel includes: Erin McKeown (vocals, various instruments); Dave Chalfant (electric guitar, upright & electric basses, percussion, samples); Katryna Nields, Beth Amsel (backgroundvocals). Recorded at Sackamusic Studios, Amhearst, Massachusetts between October 1999 & January 2000. Virginia-born and New England-based, Erin McKeown's musical roots seem to lie somewhere in the deep South. Throughout her aptly named debut, DISTILLATION, you can hear echoes of Robert Johnson, G. Love, the Faulknerian landscape of the first couple albums by the Band, and most obviously, the rural mythos best explored, from entirely different angles, by those Louisiana-born Williams non-sisters, Victoria and Lucinda. While nowhere near as helium-pitched, McKeown shares Victoria's fondness for odd, jazz-inflected phrasing, especially on the swooping vocal melody of the Tin Pan Alleyish "Didn't They?," on which McKeown soars and dives like a drunken seagull, or the Billie Holidayesque trills in "The Little Cowboy." What McKeown has in common with Lucinda Williams is her wry but essentially romantic, tradition-rooted but not bound lyrical stance. The countryish "La Petite Mort," with its sly sex-and-religion twining, would not have sounded out of place on CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD. SKU: 1080067

River Ain't Too Much To Love, A
'A River Ain't Too Much To Love' is the twelfth album from lo-fi alt-country pioneer Bill Callahan. Recorded at Willie Nelson's Perdernale Studios in just ten days, the album sees Callahan deliver his dark, unsettling, and witty lyrics over a back drop of acoustic guitars and hushed drums provided by Dirty Three's Jim White.Folk harpist Joanna Newsom also guests on the track 'Rock Bottom Riser'. Bedtime For Democracy
The Dead Kennedys: Jello Biafra, Klaus Flouride, D.H. Peligro, East Bay Ray. Additional personnel includes: Tim Jones (synthesizer); Jayed Scotti (timbales); Cal Andrew, Blaze (background vocals). Recorded at City Sound and Hyde Street Studios, San Francisco, California. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Although nobody knew it at the time, this was to be the Dead Kennedys' final official studio album; exhausted by the legal battle brought on by their previous album FRANKENCHRIST, they threw in the towel shortly after recording this one. Fortunately, they go out here in a blaze of angry glory. BEDTIME FOR DEMOCRACY is arguablytheir most explicitly political album. It's full of furious, supersonic punk assaults on Reagan-era topics, including the Rambo movies ("Rambozo the Clown"), media brainwashing ("Fleshdunce"), fashionable politics ("Anarchy for Sale"), and even punk rock itself ("Chickenshit Conformist"). There's also a hilarious version--certainly the fastest ever recorded--of David Alan Coe's anthem of blue collar dissatisfaction, "Take This Job and Shove It." SKU: 1056360
