Rooster
Debut album from young London based band inspired by the classic rock sounds of Led Zeppelin, Cream, the Yardbirds and Free. With a manifesto to"bring back stadium rock", their polished, bluesy, melodic sound recalls early Reef, and the funky, elastic rhythms in some of their tracks have also seen them compared to the Chili Peppers. Includes the singles 'Come Get Some' and 'Staring At The Sun'. SKU: 6582177

Prisoners Of Love (A Smattering Of Scintillating Senescent Songs 1984-2003/Limited Edition)
Full title: Prisoners Of Love: A Smattering Of Scintillating Senescent Songs 1984-2003 PLUS ASmattering Of Outtakes And Rarities 1986-2002. Yo La Tengo: Ira Kaplan (vocals, guitar); Georgia Hubley (vocals, drums); James McNew (bass guitar). Additional personnel: Chris Stamey, Dave Schramm (guitar); David Henry (cello); Mike Tchang (saxophone); Chris Nelson (trombone); Al Greller (double bass); Dave Rick, Gene Holder, Stephan Wichnewski (bass guitar); Roger Moutenot (bongos). Indie-rock bands come and go (sometimes very quickly), but few have developed such long and inventive careers as Yo La Tengo. Since the mid-1980s, Hoboken, New Jersey's finest have been perfecting their restless sound just across the Hudson River from the ever-fashionable music mecca of New York City. From this small distance, the group (founded by the husband/wife team of vocalist/guitarist Ira Kaplan and vocalist/drummer Georgia Hubley) started out appropriating the sounds of revered NYC bands, particularly the dreamy jangle-pop side of the Velvet Underground and the guitar noise of Sonic Youth. However, by 1993's PAINFUL, the trio (now rounded out by regular bassist James McNew) transcended their influences to beautiful effect. The two-disc PRISONERS OF LOVE presents many of Yo La Tengo's best moments in non-chronological order, displaying the full range of the band. Here the trio veers from reverb-heavy rock ("Big Day Coming") to gentle pop (the utterly gorgeous "Our Way to Fall") to percussive funk (an entertaining take on Sun Ra's "Nuclear War"). Throughout the collection, the group's sense of adventure is clearly evident, whether running through a guitar freakout or settling into a sleepy vocal harmony. By 2005, Yo La Tengo had cemented their place in rock history as true indie greats, a status wholly affirmed by PRISONERS OF LOVE.
This edition features a third disc that includes 16 tracks of outtakes and rarities. SKU: 6584433

Real Life
This is a limited edition of 5,000 copies, packaged in a "miniature" replica of the original vinyl LP's sleeve. Simple Minds includes: Jim Kerr (vocals); Peter Vitesse (keyboards); Malcolm Foster (bass). All tracks have beendigitally remastered. Simple Minds' first '90s album is also the first album where the group is reduced to the duo of singer Jim Kerr and guitarist Charlie Burchill, plus backing musicians. Kerr and Burchill, always the band's musical core, handle the transition from band to duo with grace; REAL LIFE sounds more like a classic Simple Minds album than anything they'd released since 1984's UP ON THE CATWALK. In places, however, the resemblance is slightly too close. The single "Travelling Man" bears more than a little likeness to the 1984 hit "Waterfront"; even more blatantly, "Let the Children Speak" is simply the 1981 instrumental "Theme for Great Cities" with added new vocals and lyrics by Kerr. On the other hand, better that Kerr and Burchill plagiarized themselves than repeat the Springsteen-meets-U2 sound that marred 1989's STREET FIGHTING YEARS. SKU: 1077550

Fun House
The Stooges: Iggy Pop (vocals); Ron Asheton (guitar); Dave Alexander (bass); Scott Asheton (drums). Additional personnel: Steven Mackay (tenor saxophone). Recorded at Elektra Sound Recorders, Los Angeles, California. FUN HOUSE sounds like an extended, guttural war-cry from deep within Iggy Stooge's (now Pop's) psyche. It lurches through a canvas of writhing rock'n'roll imagery--the Stooges' own "Heart Of Darkness"--going deeper and deeper into the numbed seen-it-all glaze of a culture fresh from a visit to Altamont and the scene of the Manson murders. While their debut, THE STOOGES, focused on rifforama and teen-angst, FUNHOUSE found their sound grown-up and meaner. Steve MacKay's wailing air-raid saxophone added a razor-edged shine to their previously thuggish exterior. Certainly harder in content and sound, FUN HOUSE's muddied production adds to its relentless in-your-face primalism. "Dirt," "L.A. Blues," and "1970" areproof alone that Iggy's id-like subject matter and persona--matched by the band's growling, tearing sound--would set the pace for rock's edgier aggression for generations to come. Maid In Bedlam, A
The first album by the John Renbourn Group, Renbourn's post-Pentangle mid-'70s project, is one of the highlights of his long and varied career. Pentangle singer Jacqui McShee, whose angelic voice is one ofthe largely undiscovered treasures of English folk music, is featured. Meanwhile, Renbourn hooks up here with woodwind and reed player Tony Roberts, whose playing had previously graced Renbourn's solo records. A MAID IN BEDLAM combines two sides of Renbourn's musical personality. The material is mostly traditional British folk like "Black Waterside," "John Barleycorn," and "My Johnny Was a Shoemaker," but the presentations and arrangements are tinged with the jazzier and more world music-oriented elements of Renbourn's solo records. The combination is intoxicating. SKU: 6565930

Unfinished Monkey Business
Former Stone Roses front man Ian Brown's first solo album, Unfinished Monkey Business is a lo-fi indie offering. A raw, slightly unfinished feel pervades throughout, which can probably be attributed to Brown's insistence on playing even those instruments with which he is not really an expert, lending the album an irresistible unrefined ambience. Brown andco-writer Aziz Ibrahim, who was briefly John Squire's replacement in the Roses, draw on influences from the East with the use of tabla on tracks such as "Sunshine". There are also guest appearances by ex-Roses colleagues Reni (drums) and Mani (bass) on third single "Can't See Me", and Primal Scream/ Electronic chanteuse Denise Johnson on the fabulously unhinged "Lions". While there are a few misguided and self-indulgent noisy meanderings--"What Happened to Ya Part 2", for example--this is a great debut, notwithstanding the constant jibes at John Squire, whose dreary album with The Seahorses this eclipses on every count. Chronicles
Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, bass, synthesizer); Alex Lifeson (acoustic guitars, synthesizers); Neil Peart (drums, percussion); John Rutsey (drums). Additional personnel: Aimee Mann (vocals). Producers include: Rush,Terry Brown, Peter Henderson, Peter Collins, Rupert Hine. Compilation producer: Bill Levenson. Includes liner notes by John Swenson. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This 2 disc set contains a 10 page booklet, historical annotations and photographs. Also contains live versions of "What You're Doing" and "A Passage To Bangkok," both appearing on CD for the first time. Released in 1990, the two-CD set CHRONICLES was the first "best of" compilation from Rush, spanning their recording career from 1974's self-titled debut until 1990's PRESTO. Although the RETROSPECTIVE VOL.1 & 2 discs from 1997 contained a lengthier and slightly different track listing (and boasted better sound due to remastering), CHRONICLES is still a superb collection of Rush's hits. Rush is primarily known as a progressive band with a leaning towards science fiction themes, but many forget that their roots lay in the bluesy riff-rock of Led Zeppelin and Cream. Look no further than the early cuts "Finding My Way," "Working Man," and a live take of "What You're Doing" for the proof. Drummer/lyricist Neil Peart replaced original member John Rutsey after the debut RUSH, and the band immediately shifted direction, developing their trademark sound, with an emphasis on more technically and lyrically challenging material. Some of the finest hard rock ever recorded can be found on CHRONICLES--"Closer To The Heart," "Tom Sawyer," "The Spirit Of Radio," "New World Man," "A Passage To Bangkok (live)," and "Distant Early Warning," to name a few. There's simply not a weak track included on CHRONICLES, which makes it a fine collection of Rush classics. SKU: 1000123

Zingalamaduni
Arrested Development: Nadirah Shakoor (vocals, percussion);Speech (vocals, DJ); Rasa Don (drums, percussion, background vocals); Headliner (percussion, DJ, background vocals); Baba OJE (percussion, background vocals); Kwesi "DJ Kemit" Asuo (DJ, background vocals); Ajile, Montsho Eshe, Aerle Taree (background vocals). Additional personnel: Fulani Faluke (vocals); Brother Larry Eaglin Jackson (guitar); DJ Brooks (drums); Jason Thompson, Freddy Luster. "Ease My Mind" was nominated for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards. On their sophomore effort ZINGALAMADUNI, Arrested Development move ever so closer to clarifying the concepts and ideals of their Pan-African roots into a modern ideology. Using a mythical radio station called WMFW-FM (loosely based on Paliament's "We Funk Radio" as well as the community radio station of Spike Lee's DO THE RIGHT THING, and which stands for "we must fight and win") as a soapbox for his pronouncements, AD leader/vocalist Speech launches consistent lyrical attacks on the state of black urban society, preaching an idealistic "one love" philosophy. Yet, while these jams are rhythmically funky, and correct both historically and politically, they strike too general a chord to be triumphant anthems for such agitated times. It is when Arrested Development narrow their topical focus--as they do on the scintillating "Mister Landlord," and on the spiritually-advanced "Ease My Mind"--and bring their endless cascade of sweet-voiced vocalists into the spotlight, that ZINGALAMADUNI lives up to the "new age of hip-hop" promise served up by the group's debut. When A Woman Loves [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks as well as multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Patti LaBelle (vocals); Mike Scott, Ali Bourdris (guitar); "Big" Jim Wright, Khris Kellow (keyboards, background vocals); Paul Johnson (bass); Brian Kendrick (drums); Alex Richbourg, Seneca Cayson (programming); Jamecia Bennet, Lisa Kieth, Sue Ann Carwell, Ann Nesby, Jackie Smiley, Julie Delgado, Carl Carwell, Bobby Payne, Damascene Pierre (background vocals). Producers: Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Khris Kellow, Hex Hector, Mac Qualye. Engineers include: Ali Bourdris, Mario Luccy, Mac Quayle. This concept album is a meditation on affairs of the heart that's held together by a series of spoken word segments, such as Patti LaBelle answering the phone, entertaining girlfriends, or just talking to herself. The ubiquitous Diane Warren wrote all the songs and the estimable team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis handles most of the production. WHEN A WOMAN LOVES continues in the vein of LaBelle's previous album, FLAME, in that it's dominatedby power ballads that give LaBelle the opportunity to wail in her patented super-diva style. The recording practically captures the sound of her fluttering, emotional hand movements in numbers like the title tune, "Make Tonight Beautiful," or her barn-burning remake of Taylor Dayne's "Love Will Lead You Back." Playground Psychotics
Full performer name: Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention. The Mothers Of Invention: Frank Zappa (guitar, vocals); Mark Volman, Howard Kaylan (vocals); George Duke (keyboards, vocals); Ian Underwood (keyboards, woodwinds); Jim Pons (bass, vocals); Aynsley Dunbar (drums). PLAYGROUND PSYCHOTICS contains archival material from the early 1970's. For an accurate representation of an early-'70s Zappa/Mothers tour, it doesn't get more real than PLAYGROUND PSYCHOTICS. The album contains live versions of songs taped at the Fillmore East in New York City, the Pauley Pavilion atU.C.L.A., and the Rainbow Theater in London, England. But PLAYGROUND PSYCHOTICS goes beyond just live music. Zappa taped a large amount of band member dialogue during their day-to-day travels from city to city, and an abundance of these conversations are included on PLAYGROUND PSYCHOTICS. Although newcomers to Zappa's work may find the heavy use of dialogue and conversation a tad too indulgent (such as "The Mudshark Interview," "Here Comes the Gear, Lads," etc.) longtime fans will appreciate this candid glimpse into the world of Zappa & the Mothers. Points of interest for Zappa fanatics will be the long and winding thirty-minute composition "Billy The Mountain," as well as "Wonderful Wind," "Cruising for Burgers," and the Zappa classic "Sharleena." Although the YOU CAN'T DO THAT ON STAGE compilation series is the definitive live Zappa, PLAYGROUND PSYCHOTICS has its share of highlights. SKU: 1042528

Scarlet's Walk (Limited Edition/+DVD)
This Limited version of SCARLET'S WALK includes a bonus DVD disc. Personnel: Tori Amos (vocals, Boesendorfer piano, Wurlitzer piano, Fender Rhodes piano, ARP synthesizer); Robbie McIntosh (acoustic & electric guitars, dobro); David Torn(acoustic & electric guitars, loops); Mac Aladdin (acoustic & electric guitars); Sinfonia Of London (strings); John Philip Shenale (flute); David Jon Evans (bass); Matt Chamberlain (drums). Recorded at Martian Engineering, Cornwall, England and Sony Music Studios, London, England. The most instantly engaging, least cryptic (though still sometimes inscrutable) Tori Amos record since LITTLE EARTHQUAKES, SCARLET'S WALK is a welcome return to form. Ostensibly a grand concept album based on an American travelogue, the disc is, at its core, simply a collection of detailed relationship songs in the vein of early Joni Mitchell. The instrumentation is sparer than on Amos's last several efforts, effectively showcasing her supple piano work and uncharacteristically unmannered vocal performances. Many tracks feature nothing but bass, drums, piano and atmospheric guitar (courtesy of ex-Pretender Robbie McIntosh and avant garde jazzer David Torn) and this instrumentation gives the record an appropriately open, organic feel. Though there are, as usual, many moments of confrontational, biting humor here, SCARLET'S WALK reveals a somewhat kinder, gentler Tori Amos. Even "I Can't See New York," which appears to have been inspired by the September 11th attacks, seems more empathetic than angry, and is filled with wistful introspection. Though it lacks anything resembling a hit single, SCARLET'S WALK is a mature and fully realized work, easily ranking among Tori Amos's very best albums. SKU: 1077117

Morning View
This is an Enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The Enhanced portion includes behind the scenes footage documenting the making of MORNING VIEW. Incubus: Brandon Boyd, Michael Einziger, DJ Kilmore, Dirk Lance, Jose Pasillas II. Additional personnel includes: Joel Derouin, Marion De Leon (violin); Evan Wilson, Karie Prescott (viola); Larry Corbett (cello); Jon Clarke (winds); Dawn Beckman (background vocals). Engineers include: Mike Einzinger, Dave Holdredge, Scott Litt. Recorded at Stern House Studios, Malibu, California. MORNING VIEW was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical). Incubus is ready to pave its own way in the modern rock scene. With the brooding and crunchy musical themes of MORNING VIEW, it's almost hard to imaginethat the album was written and recorded in the relaxed atmosphere of a California beach house. Drummer Jose Pasillas offers tasty percussive coloring in the breakout single, "Wish You Were Here." The song's trippy verses set against its heavily strummed choruses fits the profile of push-and-pull dynamics that Incubus fans have come to expect. "11am" touches on regret and indecision with some neo-Eastern flavor and Mike Patton-inspired vocalizing by frontman Brandon Boyd. "Float" borrows from traditional Asian music and shows the band's near-fearless spirit of experimentation. MORNING VIEW's most eccentric track is the crafted epic "Just A Phase," whose quirky time signature changes and adventurous arrangement show that Incubus has a great deal more to offer than strategically placed turntable scratches. Authorised Greatest Hits, The
Cheap Trick: Robin Zander (vocals, guitar); Rick Nielsen (guitar); Tom Petersson (bass); Bun E. Carlos (drums). Producers include: Cheap Trick, Tom Werman, George Martin, Roy Thomas Baker, Jack Douglas. Reissue producers: Cheap Trick, Bruce Dickinson. Includes liner notes by Ron Albanese. Die hard Trick completists, as well as those who have ever sung along to "Surrender" in a pub, will want to grab this one. While the one black mark is the lack of the earlier raw material, AUTHORIZED successfully mixes commercial ballads with down n' dirty rockers. The LIVE AT BUDOKAN one-two punch of "I Want You To Want Me" and "Ain't That A Shame" shows the band in top form. "Southern Girls" is an overlooked, heavy pop classic written by the maniacal Rick Nielsen and bass ace Tom Petersson. "Stop This Game" is a raucous singalong from the new wave era that shows the band in sync with Producer George Martin. Vocalist Robin Zander shines on the slick, radio-friendly "Tonight It's You." Vintage Trick is represented by the beautiful "Mandocello," while a live version of "I Can't Take It" showcases the band's most recent MUSIC FOR HANGOVERS. The band selected a great lineup of songs that would appeal to both the Cheap Trick novice ("Dream Police", "The Flame [live]") and fanatic ("That 70s Song [In The Street]"). Buy the CD, see the show, and relish in the power of this unique band. SKU: 1044091

Opposite Of H2O
Personnel includes: Drag-On, Scarface, DMX, Styles, DMX, Eve, The Lox, Parle, P. Killer Tracks, SwizzBeatz, Case (vocals). Producers include: Swizz Beatz, DJ Shok, David Star, Teflon, DJ Iroc. Coming from a crew as prestigious as the Ruff Ryders, Drag-On is an emcee who the hip-hop audience expects a lot from. With that in mind, his debut album OPPOSITE OF H20 delivers the quality songs that other Ruff Ryder affiliates, such as The Lox and Eve, have shown they were capable of. Drag built up anticipation for this solo album when he spit flames on tracks like "Down Bottom" off the RYDE OR DYE compilation. Here, Drag continues to spit over Swizz Beatz produced tracks. Drag's moment comes on "Spit These Bars," which fits perfectly on a Ruff Ryders menu and "Ready For War" when he teams up with The Lox. With his first effort, Drag uses that authentic Ruff Ryders formula, but shows he has his own original style too. SKU: 1029792

Alpha
Asia: John Wetton (vocals, bass); Steve Howe (guitar); Geoff Downes (keyboards); Carl Palmer (drums). Recorded at Le Studio, Quebec City, Canada and Manta Sound, Toronto, Canada between February and May 1983. With Asia's sophomore effort, 1983's ALPHA, the prog-rock supergroup scored another sizeable hit, though it wasn't as big as the band's hit self-titleddebut one year earlier. A bit more polished and not as rough around the edges as its predecessor, ALPHA contains such standouts as the anthemic "Don't Cry," and the melodic rockers "The Heat Goes On," "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes," and "Open Your Eyes." ALPHA would prove to be the last album to feature Asia's original line-up, as guitarist Steve Howe was replaced by Mandy Meyer for its third release, ASTRA, in 1985. Singer John Wetton also quit, but returned in time for Asia's third album. SKU: 4133986

Hatful Of Hollow
HATFUL OF HOLLOW includes songs recorded live for BBC Radio 1. The Smiths: Morrissey (vocals); Johnny Marr (guitar, mandolin, harmonica); Andy Rourke (bass); Mike Joyce (drums). Producers: John Porter, The Smiths, RogerPusey, Dale Griffin. A composite of radio sessions and sundry early singles, HATFUL OF HOLLOW provides an alternative snapshot of the Smiths' early career. Compiled in the wake of their debut album, it exhibited all of their considerable strengths, in particular Johnny Marr's ringing, expressive guitarwork. The riff he creates on 'How Soon Is Now' is thoroughly captivating. Vocalist Morrissey's distinctive croon and solipsistic lyrics are already unique and give the group its originality. At times ironic, at others wistful (as on 'Back To The Old House'), he takes the Smiths into new areas of expression and his contrasting visions are fully expressed herein. SKU: 1004996

Scott II
SCOTT 2 represents the axis of the singer's career. Somehow Scott Walker (by now writing under his given name, Engel) carved himself a commercial as well as critical success just as the pop star's existential angst assumed the upper hand. As with predecessor SCOTT (1), the fascination with Jacques Brel is evident in the inclusion ofthree of the Belgian's songs. "Next" is as shockingly graphic as "The Girls and the Dogs" is comic, but most instantly identifiable is "Jacky." This UK-banned hit single and leadoff track heralds the record's arrival at bawdy, breakneck speed. The Brel influence smothers one of SCOTT 2's four Engel originals, "The Girls from the Streets." For all its grandeur, the song feels like homage. No such accusations can be leveled at "Plastic Palace People" or "The Amorous Humphrey Plugg," where Scott's writing begins to flower, his voice assuming a towering poise and distinction. The whole of SCOTT 2 is lent weight by the wildly inventive arrangements of Wally Stott, Peter Knight, and Reg Guest. One or two MOR covers aside, the combination of vocals and orchestration is magically evocative. SKU: 4125050

Elephant
The White Stripes: Jack White (vocals, guitar, piano); Meg White (drums). Additional personnel: Holly Golightly (vocals); Mort Crim (spoken vocals). Recorded at Toe-Rag Studios and BBC Maida Vale Studio, London, England in April 2002. Lo-fi in production and uncompromising in approach, ELEPHANT finds The White Stripes continuing to walk to the beat of their own pomo blues drummer in ignoring the enormous expectations heaped on the follow-up to 2001's smash WHITE BLOOD CELLS. Recorded in two weeks, this outing is packed with loose, soulful, and delightfully unpretentious songs that rage and howl. Jack and Meg White hit the ground running with the chugging shuffle "Seven Nations," with its infectious bass line and thudding cadence. Surprises abound, from the wall of Queen-like harmonies that infuse the choppy, psychedelia-tinged "There's No Room for You Here" or a reading of Burt Bacharach's "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself" bursting at the seams with distorted guitar. Not surprisingly, the blues are never far from the equation, particularly on the heavy stomper "Ball and Biscuit" with its bursts of screaming guitar solos. Equally impressive is Jack White's slide guitar onthe pleading "I Want to Be the Boy to Warm Your Mother's Heart" and six-string histrionics on the chugging "Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine" that shakes and shimmies with Stooges-like aggression. Look To The Rainbow
Many of Astrud Gilberto's later albums focus on bossa nova interpretations of jazz standards and pop songs, but 1967's LOOK TO THE RAINBOW consists primarily of Portuguese-language sambas and cariocas, many from the pen of the great Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. Gilberto's version ofJobim's "Bim Bom" is the definitive interpretation of this much-recorded song. Other highlights include "Berimbau," the title track, and the melancholy "El Preciso Aprender A Ser So (Learn To Live Alone)." Gilberto is in excellent voice throughout, and producer Creed Taylor's orchestrations are kept low-key so as not to detract from that magical voice. Peculiarly, this 45-minute CD ends with the six songs from Gilberto's 1966 classic A CERTAIN SMILE, A CERTAIN SADNESS that do not appear at the end of the simultaneous CD reissue of 1967's BEACH SAMBA, including the album's two title tracks and the perfect "Summer Samba."
