Live And Dangerous - In Concert
Thin Lizzy: Phil Lynott (vocals, bass); Brian Robertson, Scott Gorham (guitar); Brian Downey (drums); John Earle. Die-hard Thin Lizzy fans have been known to exchange blows arguing whether JAILBREAK or LIVE & DANGEROUS trulyrepresents the band's supreme achievement. For devotees of the band's stage prowess it's a no-brainer: LIVE & DANGEROUS was, is, and always will be king of the mountain. Recorded at the height of the band's creative powers as well as its commercial peak, the album offers energized performances of the band's best-known material, reeled out in confident swagger. Even the more obscure material ("The Rocker") and surprising cover songs (Bob Seger's "Rosalie") stand with sturdy pride next the band's more celebrated material (the galloping "Cowboy Song," the summer anthem "The Boys Are Back in Town," and the tension filled "Jailbreak." The '70s may have been a decade too often filled with bloated and pompous arena rock, but LIVE & DANGEROUS is a reminder that there was ambitious and arresting rock & roll to be found as well. Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow
Rainbow includes: Ronnie James Dio (vocals); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar). All tracks have been digitally remastered. After British maestro guitarist Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple in 1974, he recruited Purple Records signees Elf as his backing band. And although Rainbow's 1975 debut was only a hint of future greatness, the album more than holds its own. Elf was led by dramatic metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio,who seemed to connect with Blackmore in quite a chemical fashion. "Man on the Silver Mountain" is prime material, as is the six-minute blues-metal classic "Catch the Rainbow." Dio's shining vocals, shown to great effect here, have been emulated by hard rock vocalists throughout the years. "The Temple of the King" is another highlight, showcasing Blackmore's emotional guitar licks. "Sixteenth Century Greensleeves" is the group's ode to medieval times. "Still I'm Sad" is an instrumental jam that closes the album. Blackmore's fretwork, while speedy, comes from the heart. Although Rainbow's incarnations would change through the years, the drive and energy of the original lineup holds a special place in hard rock history. A worthy purchase for the connoisseurs of the genre. SKU: 4132169

Planet Waves [SACD]
Personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Robbie Robertson (guitar); Richard Manuel (piano, drums); Garth Hudson (organ); Rick Danko (bass); Levon Helm (drums). Recorded at the Village Recorder, West Los Angeles, California on November 5, 6 and 9, 1973. The cover of PLANET WAVES bears the inscription "cast-iron songs and torch ballads," proving that Dylan was a skilled assessor of his own work. "There are those who worship loneliness/But I'm not one of them," he sings on "Dirge," a disclaimer for the harrowing emotional landscape he describes. Backed by themembers of the Band, Dylan explores both sides of the romantic coin on this album. "You Angel You" and "On a Night Like This" (a tune that proved jubilant enough to be covered by Buckwheat Zydeco) represent the up side. The aforementioned "Dirge" brings us into the belly of the beast, as Dylan faces up to his loneliness and pain with customary aplomb; "I payed the price of solitude/But at least I'm out of debt." Throughout, the Band alternately supply verve and poignancy as required. A little-known standout on PLANET WAVES is the solo acoustic ballad "Wedding Song," where Bob wears his heart proudly on his sleeve over a haunting minor-key melody. SKU: 1086969

Pain In My Heart
Personnel: Otis Redding (vocals); Johnny Jenkins (guitar); Charles "Packy" Axton (tenor saxophone); Floyd Newman (baritone saxophone); Wayne Jackson (trumpet). Booker T. & The MG's: Booker T. Jones (piano, organ); Steve Cropper (guitar, piano); Donald "Duck" Dunn, Lewis Steinberg (bass); Al Jackson Jr (drums). Producer: Jim Stewart. Reissue producer: Yves Beauvais. Recordedbetween 1962 and January 1964. Originally released on Atco (33-161). Includes liner notes by Bob Altshuler. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Dan Hersch (DigiPrep). After Otis Redding made his mark on the Top 100 pop charts with his Fall 1963 single "Pain In My Heart," he released a debut album of the same name the following year that showed this Georgia soul singer to be no flash in the pan. The bulk of PAIN is covers that either pay homage to influences like Sam Cooke ("You Send Me") and Little Richard ("Lucille") or ride on the coattails of recent hits by Don Gardner and Dee Dee Ford ("I Need Your Lovin') and the Kingsmen ("Louie Louie"). Although Redding's interpretive skills were impressive, his early, self-penned material such as "These Arms Of Mine" and "That What My Heart Needs" were an even greater representation of his burgeoning talent. Apparently fans of soul agreed--both songs made the Top 30 on the R&B charts. SKU: 1009331

Includes a 75-page hardbound book with liner notes by Lewis Porter,Jimmy Heath, Yusef Lateef, Charles Lloyd. THE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Historical Album. After his tenure in the great Miles Davis group of the mid-'50s, John Coltrane was ready to strike out on his own. Although he had recorded several records on the smaller Prestige label, Coltrane's first major label association was with Ahmet Ertegun's Atlantic Records. Now all of 'Trane's pioneering Atlantic recordings are compiled in one huge seven-disc set entitled THE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION. As the content attests, this title is a fitting analogy. Starting with the early recordings with Milt Jackson for the BAGS & TRANE album, the set chronologically follows Coltrane's work through the groundbreaking GIANT STEPS sessions and beyond. Many alternate takes are sprinkled throughout amidst familiar album tracks from the likes of COLTRANE JAZZ, COLTRANE PLAYS THE BLUES and the magnificent MY FAVORITE THINGS, giving a picture of the saxophonist's intense creativity at this period. Finally, for the true 'Trane collector, disc seven, in a unique package, includes twenty-five alternate and incomplete takes, false starts and rehearsal recordings of classics like "Giant Steps," "Naima" and "Like Sonny." This set is a powerful document of one of the most significant artists of the modern era in his prime. SKU: 4112461

Goes To Church
Carla Bley Big Band: Carla Bley (piano); Roger Jannotta (soprano & alto saxophones, flute); Wolfgang Puschnig (alto saxophone); Andy Sheppard, Jerry Underwood (tenor saxophone); Julian Arguelles (baritone saxophone); Lew Soloff, Guy Barker, Claude Deppa (trumpet); Gary Valente, Pete Beachill, Chris Dean (trombone); Richard Henry (bass trombone); Karen Mantler (harmonica, organ); Steve Swallow (bass); Dennis Mackrel (drums). Recorded live at Chiesa San Francesco Al Prato, Umbria Jazz, Perugia, Italy from July 19-21, 1996. Carla Bley has explored themes ranging from death (Gary Burton's GENUINE TONG FUNERAL) to music boxes (MUSIQUE MECHANIQUE). This time out, the prevailing theme is religious experience. Bley has never been one to beat around the bush when naming her albums. The title tells the whole tale. There is reverence, spirituality, mournfulness, and celebration--sometimes all in one piece ("Exaltation/Religious Experience/Major"). But by no stretch of the imagination is this a religious album. Firstand foremost, CHURCH is a Carla Bley album and is therefore full of her characteristic wit, inquisitiveness, and beauty. When Bley adds "Big" to the name of her ensemble, she means it. 17 players become a part of Bley's musical world on CHURCH. The album was recorded live, at several locations throughout Europe and America. But, in keeping with the high sonic standards of all ECM-related releases, you'd hardly notice it if not for the applause at the end of each piece. SKU: 1008900

Nocturama
Limited Edition Bonus DVD included with first 40,000 copies. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Nick Cave (vocals, piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Mick Harvey (guitar, organ, bass, percussion, background vocals); Blixa Bargeld (guitar, pedal steel guitar, background vocals); Warren Ellis (violin); Martyn P. Casey (bass); Thomas Wydler, Jim Sclavunos (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Chris Bailey (vocals); The Blockheads. Recorded at SingSing, Melbourne, Australia in March 2002. This can be seen as the third installment in the series of Nick Cave albums that started with 1997's THE BOATMAN'S CALL; like it's two predecessors, NOCTURAMA is full of stately piano ballads, and largely absent of the barbed-wire rantings thattypified Cave's earlier recordings. While past albums painted Cave as the grisly Edgar Allen Poe of rock, NOCTURAMA and its brethren take a marked turn toward more personal, sometimes even romantic themes. Naturally there's still an underlying darkness and disturbance throughout, but overall Cave seems to have turned himself into something of a Bacharach for the post-Goth set. Colored by the mournful violin of the Dirty Three's Warren Ellis and Cave's own prominent piano and organ, most of the tracks perambulate quietly along, delivering subtly disquieting but masterfully crafted observations on the world. The two exceptions to the quietude are the garagey "Dead Man in My Bed," hailing back to the sound of TENDER PREY's "Deanna," and the unhinged epic closer "Babe, I'm On Fire." The latter is essentially a 15-minute, psychopathic update of Cole Porter's "Let's Do It," with Cave giving full bore to his gloriously twisted imagination in describing the characters from every walk of life who are slaves to passion. The controlled chaos of the Bad Seeds is at its savage best here as they roar and clang away behind him, like the carnivorous Id that he's barely managing to keep under control. It's a powerful, highly original track, and an easy highlight here. SKU: 1078072

Backlash [Digipak] [Remastered]
Personnel: Freddie Hubbard (trumpet, flugelhorn);James Spaulding (alto saxophone, flute); Albert Dailey (piano); Bob Cunningham (bass); Otis Ray Appleton (drums); Ray Barretto (percussion). Producer: Arif Mardin. Reissue producers: Donald Elfman, Naomi Yoshii. Engineers: Tom Dowd, Phil Iehle, Adrian Barber. Recorded at Atlantic Studios, New York, New York on October 19 & 24, 1966. Originally released on Atlantic (1477). Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff. Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus Digital Services, New York, New York). Originally released in 1967, BACKLASH shows a young Freddie Hubbard beginning his explorations outside the confines of straight-ahead jazz. The tunes here have a rock-soul flavor and show Hubbard absorbing all that was in the air at that moment. The title track, penned by Donald Picket, easily rolls over the seductive groove laid down by drummer Otis Ray Appleton and showcases Hubbard's shining tone and the fine playing of his old friend, alto saxophonist James Spaulding. As always, the influence of Clifford Brown is evident in Hubbard's playing, but there is also the echo of Lee Morgan's trumpet work on the classic '60s recording SIDEWINDER. On several cuts, including "Backlash" and, most notably, "Little Sunflower," the subtle percussion of Ray Barretto adds polish to the sweet Latin sheen. That latter track also benefits from Spaulding's delicate flute work. Pianist Albert Daily and bassist Bob Cunningham round out the rhythm section. SKU: 1076244

Western Wall
Personnel includes: Emmylou Harris (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar); Linda Ronstadt (vocals); Ethan Johns (acoustic, electric, slide, Spanish & baritone guitar, dulcimer, mandocello, synthesizer, bass, drums, percussion, marksaphone, optigon); Bernie Leadon (acoustic, electric & 12-string guitars, gutarron, mandocello, mandolin, synthesizer, 6-string bass, background vocals); Greg Leisz (acoustic, electric & pedal steel guitars, mandocello, mandolin, bass, background vocals); Andy Fairweather Low (electric guitar, bass, background vocals); Paul Kennerley (electric guitar, background vocals); Neil Young (harmonica, background vocals); Kate McGarrigle, Anna McGarrigle (background vocals). Recorded at the Arizona Inn, Tucson, Arizona. WESTERN WALL: THE TUCSON SESSIONS was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Perhaps inspired by the triumphs of TRIO and TRIO II, which they recorded with Dolly Parton, Linda Rondstadt and Emmylou Harris went into a makeshift studio to record an album as a duo. The results are superb. Rondstadt leaves her slick Hollywood pop sound behind and delivers some of her most unadorned and heartfelt singing since the early '70s. Harris is Harris: her voice is as delicate as a butterfly and as strong as steel. The songs on WESTERN WALL are varied, each vividly telling a story. "1917" is a chilling chronicle of an affair cast amid the brutality of WW I. "Sweet Spot" is an eerie declaration of devotion, with a spare, Laurie Anderson-like use of electronics, written by Harris and Luscious Jackson's Jill Cunniff. Rondstadt shines on a straightforward, proud version of Jackson Browne's "For a Dancer." Other song choices include Bruce Springsteen's "Across the Border" and Leonard Cohen's "Sisters of Mercy." Excellent. SKU: 5066539

Refried Ectoplasm
REFRIED ECTOPLASM is a compilation of rare tracks, most of which were originally released on 7-inch vinyl between July 1992 and March 1994, and two previously unreleased tracks. Stereolab: Laetitia Sadier, Mary Hansen (vocals); Tim Gane (guitar, Farfisa organ, Moog synthesizer); Katherine Gifford,Sean O'Hagan (organ); Mick Conroy (Farfisa organ); Duncan Brown, Martin Kean (bass); Joe Dilworth, Andy Ramsey (drums). Additional personnel: Nurse With Wound. Engineers include: Robbs, Steve Mack, The Groop. Stereolab's REFRIED ECTOPLASM is a collection of limited-edition vinyl singles the band has been releasing on its own Duophonic Super 45s label, as well as other hard-to-find doo-dads from throughout its lifespan. It's like a career overview without all the stuff you've heard before. As such, it defines Stereolab's musical aesthetic as well as any of their other "albums": driving, electric-organ-drenched, VU-propelled space-pop whose wide-eyed beauty is balanced by its sheer simplicity and by Laetitia Sadier's minimalist vocal delivery (often in a foreign tongue). Mostly, Stereolab's is a thick, airborne drone, but one that is all-encompassing enough to sound pretty on some occasions and difficult on others. On the one hand there are the actively odd studio sounds, and wide-ranging Beach Boys-like harmonies that bring their pop virtues to the fore ("Lo Boob Oscillator"); on the other hand, there are abrasive, rhythmic journeys with sonic pranksters Nurse With Wound, which tune into the 'lab's experimental impulses ("Animal Or Vegetable"). The best tunes, like the proletariat-minded "Exploding Head Movie," do both. SKU: 4125624

Live In Detroit
Personnel: Peter Frampton (vocals, guitar); Bob Mayo (vocals, guitar, keyboards); John Regan (vocals, bass); Chad Cromwell (vocals, drums). Recorded at Pine Knob Music Theatre, Detroit, Michigan on July 17, 1999. "Off The Hook" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Peter Frampton may have been the subject of an episode of VH1's rags-to-riches-to-rags series Behind The Music, but the 2000 release LIVE IN DETROIT proves the former '70s superstar's chops are far from faded. Leading a pared-down quartet throughout this vibrant 75-minute set, Frampton kicks things off with his mid-'80s semi-hit "Lying." From here, the former teen idol impresses with his passionate guitar playing and warm singing style on numbers like the 10-minute plus "Can't Take That Away," and the solo acoustic "All I Wanna Be (Is By Your Side)." Even his biggest hits sound fresh: the pop nugget "Show Me the Way" features an improvisation on his signaturetalkbox, while "Do You Feel Like I Do" benefits from keyboardist Bob Mayo's Keith Jarrett-like runs during one extended instrumental break. Elsewhere, Frampton excels on the hard-driving instrumental "Off the Hook," before reaching back to his days with Humble Pie for a scorching finale of Ashford and Simpson's "I Don't Need No Doctor," proving there's still some life left in this '70s survivor. Silver's Serenade
Horace Silver Quintet: Horace Silver (piano); Junior Cook (tenor saxophone); Blue Mitchell (trumpet); Gene Taylor (piano); Roy Brooks (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NewJersey on May 7 & 8, 1963. Orginally released on Blue Note (84131). Includes liner notes by Joel Dorn. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Ron McMaster. This classic Blue Note date finds Horace Silver, the quintessential hard bop pianist, in a straight-ahead, swinging frame of mind. Supported by a quintet that features trumpeter Blue Mitchell and saxophonist Junior Cook on the front line, Silver sachets his way through five finely crafted numbers with the style and grace of, well, fine silver. From the lightly bouncing title track that opens SERENADE to the barn-burner that closes the album ("Nineteen Bars"), the group shines with tight ensemble work and confident solos. Silver's trademark bluesy piano style shines on the hard swinging "Let's Get To The Nitty Gritty," which also features a tight shuffle groove by drummer Roy Brooks. Of special note is Silver's often-overlooked classic "The Dragon Lady," a complex composition with a personality all its own. In short, this is one disc that should not be left off the true hard bop fan's wish list. SKU: 1003988

Bow Down
Westside Connection: Ice Cube, W.C., Mack 10. Producers include: Ice Cube, QDIII. Engineers include: Ice Cube. Recorded at Westsiiiiide Studios, California and Treehouse Studios, South Africa. Gangsta Rap, from some gentlemen who know a thing or two about the style. Ice Cube, W.C. and Mack 10 are the core of this outfit, and the tracks cover the usual subjects: urban violence, drug dealing, and general anti-establishment behavior. The sound is west coast all theway, with flowing, quick-tempo raps over sparse, repetitive beats. Few surprises here musically; "Bow Down" is typical of the lot, as the crew demands respect from those who would dare to challenge their supreme authority as rappers, gangsters, and Mack Daddies. There's also some coastal rivalry here: in "All the Critics in New York" Cube voices his displeasure with the rappers he used to respect, but who now criticize and, even worse, imitate him. This is raw, straight-up urban music, not for young children or the faint of heart. SKU: 1003098

Ryde Or Die Vol.2
Ruff Ryders: DMX, Eve, The Lox, Drag-On, Parle. Producers includes: Swizz Beatz II, Icepick, T.J. Beatz, Mahogany, Tod Cheek. The Ruff Ryders clique hasspawned such acts as DMX, The Lox, and Eve, but it was their first collaborative effort RYDE OR DYE VOL. I that marked their territory as a powerful hip-hop crew. They return with the follow-up RYDE OR DYE VOL. II to reestablish themselves as the collective that just won't stop. Under the direction of producer Swizz Beatz, the Ruff Ryders rip the tracks like hungry rappers still looking for a record deal. The album showcases more new artists this time around, but remains heavy on the superstars, with artists such as the Ruff Ryders' own DMX as well as guests like Method Man & Redman contributing a track. With hits like Eve & Jadakiss' "Got it All," and Styles' solo effort "Holiday," the Ruff Ryders prove why they've come so far. SKU: 1037605

Personnel includes: George Benson (vocals, guitar); David Sanborn (alto saxophone); Chaka Khan, Lani Groves (background vocals); Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Jon Faddis, Paul Jackson, Jr., David Spinozza, Gus Falcon, Ira Siegel, Alan Raph, Lew Delgatto, Tom Malone, Harry Lookofsky, Jonathan Abramowitz, Maximoff, Emanuel Vardi, Harold Kohon, Marilyn Wright, Joe Malin, Fred Buldrini, Richard Young, Gerald Tarack, Guy Lumia, Jerry Hey, David Paich, James Newton-Howard, Pete Cannarozzi, StevePorcaro, Greg Phillinganes, Nathan East, Will Lee, Anthony Jackson, Marcus Miller, Steve Jordan, Steve Ferrone, Leslie Ming, Carlos Vega, Steve Gadd, Lenny Castro, Sammy Figueroa, Bashiri Johnson. Engineers: Michael O'Reilly, Gary Skardina, Jeremy Smith. Recorded at Atlantic Studios, New York, and Music Grinder Studios, Los Angeles, California. IN YOUR EYES, produced by one-time Atlantic Records ace producer Arif Mardin, features the strong vocals that awarded Benson much success in the late '70's. Benson's takes on period hits such as "Lady Love Me (One More Time)," "In Your Eyes," "Feel Like Makin' Love," "Use Me," and "Love Will Come Again" are included in this mix of ten R&B love songs. Jazz fans will have to wait out the album's vocals in order to get to the George Benson they love; he comes through with the guitar licks on the instrumental track "In Search of a Dream." While heavy on the synthesized rhythm tracks and pre-programmed back beats, IN YOUR EYES does manage to succeed as a romantic pop/instrumental album, reminiscent of some of Bob James' recordings from the same period.
