Undercurrent
Personnel: Bill Evans (piano); Jim Hall (guitar). Recorded at Soundmakers, New York, New York on April 24 and May 14, 1962. Originally released on United Artists (1500). Includes liner notes by David Rosenthal. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Occasionally during UNDERCURRENT one expects the other shoe to drop: the growl of a bass entering in half time, wire brushes falling patiently into place on a sizzle cymbal. It never happens, and that's ultimately the allure of this duet record. The pleasure of these eight cuts (two of them previously unreleased, all of them recorded over two days in the spring of 1962 in New York) lies in the sense of overhearing a private conversation between two particularly thoughtful people. The tunes are mostly standards, and they conjure a noirish, rainy-night aesthetic. There are afew exceptions, though--the blues come gleaming through on the limber "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" and the more reflective "Romain." The kickoff tune, "My Funny Valentine," is the set's cooker. Evans pecks out the melody, encouraged by Hall's deft counterlines. As Hall's solo gets under way Evans provides a pointillistic background that grows in intensity, urging on the guitarist, who replies with increasing heat before passing things off to Evans and getting into some spirited comping of his own. Horses [Remastered]
Personnel: Patti Smith (vocals); Ivan Kral (vocals, guitar, bass); Lenny Kaye, Allen Lanier, Tom Verlaine (guitar); Richard Sohl (piano); John Cale (bass); Jay Dee Daugherty (drums). Recorded at Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York. Originally released on Arista (8362). Includes liner notes by Patti Smith. With the exception of Bob Dylan, few rock n' rollers explored poetry within the rock format as thoroughly as Patti Smith. By the mid-70's, Smith had been a regular poetry-reader in New York City clubs for years, and with a deep admiration for The Rolling Stones, it was only natural to set these poems to music. With an exciting rock band to back her up (including renowned music critic Lenny Kaye on guitar), Smith built up a following on the strength of the band's thrilling and trance-inducing live shows. Produced byex-Velvet Underground bassist John Cale, HORSES was considered 'punk rock' when it was first released, but there was much more to it. Smith had a gift for being able to paint vivid pictures with her prose, as evidenced by a pair of 10-minute long epics, "Birdland" and "Land" (which consisted of 3 sections--"Horses," "Land of A Thousand Dances," and "La Mer"). Other tracks are more conventional, yet just as gripping--a cover of "Gloria," "Free Money," and "Kimberly," plus a ragged live cover of The Who's "My Generation" (included on the '96 remastered CD edition as a bonus track). HORSES is a classic. SKU: 1001329

Inside
Personnel: David Sanborn (sopranino & alto saxophones); Marcus Miller (vocals, clarinet, bass clarinet, sitar, electric piano, Fender Rhodes, keyboards, guitar, bass, fretless bass, synthesizer, drum programming); Cassandra Wilson, Sting, Lalah Hathaway, Eric Benet (vocals); Michael Brecker, Lenny Pickett (tenor saxophone); Ronnie Cuber (baritone saxophone); Wallace Roney (trumpet); Hank Roberts (cello); Gil Goldstein (electric piano); Ricky Peterson (Hammond B-3 organ); David Issac (keyboards, drum & percussion programming); Fareed Haque (acoustic guitar); Dean Brown(acoustic steel & electric guitars); Bill Frisell (guitar); Martin Sewell (National Resaphonic guitar); Gene Lake (drums); Don Alias (percussion). Engineers include: David Isaac, Dean Sharenow, Malcolm Pollack. Recorded at Camel Island Studios, Los Angeles, California; Avatar Studios, Sound On Sound, Hiatus Studio, and Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York. INSIDE won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Performance. With smooth strokes, Sanborn has painted a lovely urban jazz landscape on INSIDE. These cuts may have an easy-rolling feel, but they're surely not dental office fare. Soft, breezy vocal and alto melodies meet rough beats and mean bass lines, making for statements with a real earthiness. Sanborn and multi-instrumentalist Marcus Miller penned most of the tunes, with a couple of pop covers thrown in for funk's sake. The opener "Corners (For Herbie)," presumably a tribute to Mr. Hancock, is a slow, groovy Fender Rhodes-laden affair, with Don Alias' colorful percussion, and glad blowing by Sanborn and guest Michael Brecker. Aretha Franklin's "Daydreaming" veers into a trippy sort of "rare groove" territory, with diva Cassandra Wilson singing over a backdrop of undulating electric piano, steel guitar and sitar. "Brother Ray" is a blues jam reminiscent of Stevie Ray Vaughan's jazzier flights. The horn passages are made lush by the double-tenor presence, swaying over Ricky Peterson's Hammond B-3 and Miller's twangy blues guitar work. With an urgent vocal performance by Sting, Bill Withers' classic "Ain't No Sunshine" takes on an almost mystical quality, with entrancing long-tone spirals and wafts of Bill Frisell's guitar. Alive Vol.4 (Symphony)
Kiss: Paul Stanley (vocals, guitar); Gene Simmons (vocals, bass); Peter Criss (vocals, drums); Tommy Thayer (guitar, background vocals). Additional personnel: The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, The Melbourne Symphony Ensemble, The Australian Children's Choir. Recorded live in Melbourne, Australia on February 28, 2003. Presumably responding to the demand of fans refusing to accept their retirement, the Kiss juggernaut rebounded from a supposed farewell tour to launch their own label with the release of SYMPHONY ALIVE IV, a double-disc set featuring the make-up clad quartet's collaboration with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. With this unusual outing, Kiss follows in the footsteps of seminal classical/hard-rock fusion records like Metallica's S&M and Deep Purple's CONCERTO FOR GROUP AND ORCHESTRA. Gene Simmons and company keep it interesting by including a section of traditionally rendered tunes as well as those with accompaniment by the smaller Melbourne Symphony Ensemble, and finally a full second CD with the entire orchestra. Noticeably absent is Ace Frehley, whose decision to get off the are-we/aren't-we-retired merry-go-round resulted in the hiring of former Black 'n Blue guitarist Tommy Thayer as his replacement. Die-hards and casual fans will bepleased by a set selection that ranges from powerfully arranged classics like "King of the Night Time World" and "Do You Love Me" to stripped-down renditions of more recent fare such as "Psycho Circus." Under The Big Black Sun (Expanded & Remastered)
X: John Doe (vocals, bass); Exene Cervenka (vocals); Billy Zoom (guitar); D.J. Bonebrake (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Like the band's first two albums, UNDER A BIG BLACK SUN was produced by Ray Manzarek. Mazarek was an appropriate choice and the sound he created, very near that of that of his former band, The Doors, served the band well, as evidenced by "Come Back To Me," which occupies a sonic world that is at once fresh and familiar. Where X's first two albums, LOS ANGELES and WILD GIFT, can be seen as a pair (both rife with the cocky exuberance that was a hallmark of the L.A. punk scene that launched them), so too can albums number three and four (MORE FUN IN THE NEW WORLD) be appreciated in tandem. The already strong songwriting was blossoming, stretching the bounds of what was considered possiblein the genre. "The Hungry Wolf" and "The Have Nots" show the breadth of the band's knowledge of musical tradition, a tradition they are at once upsetting and continuing. "Blue Spark" is yet another display of Billy Zoom's monolithic approach to the guitar. X even takes a successful turn on the old chestnut, "Dancing With Tears With My Eyes," bringing the heart that is always at the center of this band to the fore. SKU: 1071481

Man Who, The
Travis: Fran Healy, Dougie, Andy, Neil. Additional personnel includes: Sarah Wilson (cello). Engineers include: Gerard Navarro. THE MAN WHO was an astonishingly successful and critically praised follow-up to Travis's inconspicuous 1997 debut, GOOD FEELING. Amidst the upbeat but uninspired post-Britpop guitar scene, theGlaswegian four-piece refined the tender moments from the group's first album to produce a work of unexpected subtlety and confidence. The stunning first single and opening track "Writing to Reach You" sets the mood. The song evokes the fragility and lyrical ache of Radiohead's "High and Dry" and name-checks Oasis's "Wonderwall." From the claustrophobic "The Fear" to the mocking self-pity of "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" to the somnolent "As You Are" and the mellow resignation of "Driftwood," Fran Healy and company wrest a range of emotions from the simplest of acoustic arrangements. Only the solitary stray into bombast of "Turn" disappoints, but it still serves to demonstrate how far the group has progressed. SKU: 3101803

Invito Al Cielo
For the third of Sonic Youth's sound experiment series, they teamed up with legendary nosie-nik Jim O'Rourke. Building on the ideas from the brilliant extended version of "The Diamond Sea" (from WASHING MACHINE); the series explores the (mostly) instrumental side of the band. Though sold as an EP, the three tracks on the CD version of INVITIOaclock in at just over 56 minutes, and can sit quite comfortably with any of SY's best work. The title track opens the record with over 20 minutes of drenching feedback, saxophone tints, and cut-up television dialogue suggesting the soundtrack to a film-noir set in an industrial wasteland. The comparatively short (at 6 minutes) "Hungara Vivo" is the middle track of this extraordinarily strong trio and is the band's first true "ambient" soundscape: even the master himself, Brian Eno, might be a little envious. The closer, "Radio-Amatoroj," is a 29-minute mediation that structurally recalls "Hyperstation" from the seminal DAYDREAM NATION album. Though this record, and indeed the series to which it belongs, is not aimed at fans of the band's more pop-oriented material, as a whole, itis easily the best work they have done in years. I'm Alive
Personnel: Jackson Browne (vocals, guitar, piano, background vocals); Dean Parks (acoustic guitar); Scott Thurston (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); David Lindley (guitar, oud, bouzouki); Mark Goldenberg, John Leventhal, Waddy Wachtel, Mike Campbell (guitar); Jai Winding (piano); Benmont Tench (organ); Kevin McCormick, James "Hutch" Hutchinson (bass); Mauricio Lewak, Jim Keltner (drums); Luis Conte, Lenny Castro (percussion); Arnold McCuller, Willie Green, Sweet Pea Atkinson, Sir Harry Bowens, Valerie Carter, Jennifer Warnes, Doug Haywood, Katia Cardinal, Ryan Browne, Steve Soles, David Crosby, Don Henley (background vocals). Producers: Scott Thurston, DonWas, Jackson Browne. Recorded at Groove Masters, Santa Monica, California. I'M ALIVE won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album. An album that saw Browne return to high-quality songs brought about by the familiar chestnut "relationship problems." Much media attention was given to his break-up with actress Darryl Hannah, and Browne seemed to come off worse. However, he deserves the last laugh because it prompted stellar songs such as the title track, "My Problem Is You" and the light reggae beat of "Everywhere I Go." Few contemporary songwriters can analyze and discuss their own problems and failings through songs as openly and, apparently honestly, as Jackson Browne. Anybody that wrote him off as one of "those 70s singer songwriters" should lend an ear to this album, especially those with marital problems. SKU: 1005155

State, The
Nickelback: Chad Kroeger, Ryan Peake (vocals, guitar); Mike Kroeger (bass); Ryan Vikedal (drums). Recorded at Greenhouse Studios, Burnaby, British Columbia. Those with a short cultural memory say that Canada's Nickelback is reminiscent of power-rockers Creed. To the rest of the world, this means that they're influenced by grunge stalwarts Pearl Jam, which also means they'reindebted to vintage alt rock and to '70s hard rock. All these sonic touchstones are readily apparent on THE STATE. The album ostensibly revolves around "Leader of Men," which garnered the most attention on the album's initial release, and which is reprised at the end of the album in an acoustic version just to drive the point home. Anyone drawn in by that cut will find more to like here. The opening track "Breathe" finds Nickelback charging with full force straight out of the gate over a relentless rhythm section and jackhammer guitar riffs. "Deep" slows down the pace to an undulating grind, never releasing the hard-won tension for a moment. While Nickelback may show more of Creed's unrelenting attack than Pearl Jam's eclecticism, fans of either band should feel entirely comfortable in the aural environs of THE STATE. SKU: 1059078

Standards In Norway
Keith Jarrett Trio: Keith Jarrett (piano); Gary Peacock (bass); Jack DeJohnette (drums). Recorded live at the Konserthus, Oslo, Norway on October 7, 1989. Jarrett seems most at home when flanked bythe highly acclaimed rhythm section of Peacock and DeJohnette, using their superb musicianship as the framework on which to hang his beautiful, scattered improvisations. Recorded live in Oslo in 1989, this concert testifies to the trio's wonderful chemistry. Jarrett's fingers never tire of surprising the ivories, turning even these familiar standards inside out, deconstructing their melodies, looking for hidden meanings. On tracks like "Just In Time," and "I Hear A Rhapsody," he employs flurries of notes in a manner that is often more rhythmic than melodic, establishing a fine, subtle dialogue with DeJohnette's drumming, which is full of off-the-cuff syncopated fills and a battery of accents. By contrast, the sweet gentility of "Old Folks" and "Little Girl Blue" find Jarrett playing free and easy loops around the dominant chords. Peacock turns out excellent bass solos on "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing," and "Dedicated To You." A delightful, intricate and thoroughly enjoyable listen. SKU: 5047320

Lovers Rock/Lovers Live (CD+DVD)
DVD contains Lovers Live performance. Personnel: Sade Adu (vocals); Leroy Osbourne (vocals); Stuart Matthewman (guitar, woodwinds, programming); Andy Nice (cello); Andrew Hale (keyboards, programming); Janusz Podrazik (keyboards); Paul S. Denman (bass); Karl Vanden Bossche (percussion). Recorded between September 1999 & August 2000. LOVERS ROCK won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. Examining the career of former model/fashion design student Helen Folasade Adu, it's apparent that the span between studio albums increased exponentially. Eight years after LOVE DELUXE, the original members of Sade's band regrouped and here recapture the magic of the former ensemble. The vocals on LOVERS ROCK are unmistakably sensual and enchanting. Guitarist Stuart Matthewman steers clear of the crunchy electric sound that was his signature on LOVE DELUXE, the one exception being "Somebody Already Broke My Heart," which has some tasty understated percussive palm muting in the choruses. From an instrumental perspective, LOVERS ROCK leans a bit more to the electronic side, buttechnology doesn't dampen the atmosphere and simple beauty of the music. Not surprisingly, the focus continues to be the sweet, often mournful melodies of a unique pop vocalist. SKU: 1087404

March 16-29 1992 [Remastered]
Contains a hidden track following "Moonshiner (Live)". Uncle Tupelo: Jay Farrar (vocals, 6 & 12 string guitars, harmonica, bass); Jeff Tweedy (vocals, 6 & 12 string guitars, bass); Mike Heidorn (drums, cymbals, tambourine). Additional personnel includes: Brian Henneman (guitar, slide guitar, banjo, bouzouki, mandolin); John Kean (guitar, pedal steel guitar, banjo, bass); Andy Carlson (violin); Bill Holmes (accordion); David Barbe (bass). Principally recorded live at The Music Faucet, East Orange, New Jersey and John Keane Studios, Athens, Georgia between July 1990 & March 1992. Originally released on Rockville Records (6090). Includes liner notes by David Fricke. On its third outing, Uncle Tupelo decided to leave the electric guitars behind, opting instead for an earthy acoustic sound. (In fact, the album's only electric noise is guitar feedback on "Wait Up," provided by producer Peter Buck of R.E.M.). The resulting MARCH 16-20, 1992 is a folksy mix of traditional and original songs filled with the rural and industrial imagery of Appalachia. Tupelo originals like "Grindstone," "Shaky Ground," and "Black Eye" are heartfelt songs about working class woes, while traditional tunes such as "Coalminers," "Satan, Your Kingdom Must Come Down," and the Louvin Brothers' "Atomic Power" are inspired interpretations. Before the somber closing of "Wipe The Clock," the band performs the gorgeous "Sandusky,"which ranks along with the most beautiful instrumentals ever to grace any rock, folk, or country album. Throughout MARCH 16-20, 1992, the Farrar/Tweedy originals and traditional songs blend effortlessly, tied together by sincerity and earnestness far too rare in contemporary music. SKU: 1084965

Welcome To My Party
This is a Hyper CD, whichcontains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. Rusted Root includes: Michael Glabicki (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, harmonium, organ, bongos, congas, tambourine, samples); Jenn Wertz (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica, percussion); Liz Berlin (vocals, dobro, djembe); John Buynak (acoustic & electric guitars, whistle, percussion, background vocals); Patrick Norman (bass); Jim Donovan (drums, shaker, tambourine, percussion, programming, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: John McDowell (Clavinet, Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards, percussion). Producers include: Bill Bottrell, Jim Donovan, Mark Pistel. Engineers include: Bill Bottrell, Garth May, Jim Donovan. Recorded at Williams Place, Caspar, California and Red Cloud Studios, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. For their fourth album WELCOME TO MY PARTY, Rusted Root rejoined with producer Bill Botrell (who helmed their 1994 major label debut WHEN I WOKE) in addition to welcoming back former singing and songwriting member Jenn Wertzback into the fold. With the balance restored to the musical equivalent of a commune, Root managed to conjure up a rhythmically eclectic effort that does an excellent job showcasing this Pittsburgh outfit's even-handed fusion of heartfelt lyricism and extraordinary chemistry. Main Root vocalist Michael Glabicki leads the charge on a number of cuts including the heart-on-your sleeve balladry of the title track, quasi psychedelia of "Artificial Winter," and the syncopated fun of "Women Got My Money" with its tropical-flavored percussion by former Santana sideman Raul Rekow. Wertz also does a fine job reintroducing herself on the sassy funk of her self-penned "Weave" and "Blue Diamonds," a shimmering Wertz/Glabicki duet with Middle Eastern overtones. Other standout songs include the playful reggae of Liz Berlin's "Too Much," percolating opener "Union 7" (sure to make any jam band devotee salivate), and the anomalous, techno-like "People Of My Village" spearheaded by drummer Jim Donovan.
