Greatest Hits
Eurythmics: Annie Lennox (vocals, keyboards); David A. Stewart (guitar, keyboards). Additional personnel includes: Aretha Franklin (vocals); Stevie Wonder (harmonica). 1991's GREATEST HITS is a somewhat conservative compilation which unfortunately overlooks both 1981's IN THE GARDEN and 1984's FOR THE LOVE OF BIG BROTHER, two of Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox's most interesting and experimental albums. That said, it's an excellent overview of the duo's career. All of the band's singles and some of their better album tracks are featured here, in a balanced survey of their evolution from the chilly English art-rockers who recorded the hypnotic "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," to the soulful R&B-influenced pair responsible for the ripping "Would I Lie to You," the passionate "Angel," and the billowing "There Must Be an Angel Playing with My Heart." Many of Eurythmics' albums are somewhat uneven--1984's TOUCH and 1985's BE YOURSELF TONIGHT are perhaps the best--but this 63-minute collection is anexcellent starting point for the neophyte. Dysfunction
Staind: Aaron Lewis (vocals); Mike Mushok (guitar, background vocals); Johnny "Old School" April (bass, background vocals); Jon Wysocki (drums, background vocals). Recorded at Studio Litho, Seattle, Washington. Staind's big break came in 1997 when the band opened upfor Limp Bizkit in Connecticut. 20 minutes before Staind was to go on, Limp's singer Fred Durst tried to have them kicked off the bill. Fred thought they were Satan worshippers due to the nature of their cover art. After Staind's set, Fred said they were the best live band he'd seen in two years. The rest is history. Produced by Terry Date (Deftones, Pantera) and the band, DYSFUNCTION is a dark, brooding, groove-driven record. There are no pretty ballads or acoustic detours--the record slams from start to finish. Durst helped the band develop their sound and encouraged lead throat Aaron Lewis to sing more and shout less. The result is some fine, powerful vocalizing. Fans of heavy music will relish Staind's cathartic angst and flock to the sonic attack that is DYFUNCTION. SKU: 1030287

Louis Armstrong Meets Oscar Peterson [Remastered]
Personnel: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Oscar Peterson (piano); Herb Ellis (guitar); Ray Brown (bass); Louie Bellson (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of the Verve Master Edition series. Since Louis Armstrong just about invented jazz vocals if not popular singing itself, it was inevitable (and fortunate)that someone like producer Norman Granz would set Armstrong down in the studio with a modern '50s combo like Oscar Peterson's trio and watch the seminal musician strut his stuff. Aside from the Dixieland-derived All-Stars live show, Armstrong spent most of the late '40s and early '50s singing it straight for Milt Gabler at Decca Records. Here at Verve in 1957, Satchmo finally gets to ease up a little and stretch those famous gravelly vocal chords on a collection of romantic standards. Unlike Fats Waller, Armstrong rarely undermined the message of a love song with virtuoso clowning. For instance, he provided a wonderfully romantic foil to Ella Fitzgerald on their essential duet sessions. On his own, he proves to be a rhythmically adept contemporary troubadour with such deeply melodic material as "I'll Never Be the Same," "Moon Song," and "You Go to My Head." It should be noted that the earthy Louis gets the last word on the eight-minute version of Cole Porter's "Let's Do It" that closes the set. SKU: 1005488

Boy
U2: Paul "Bono Vox" Hewson (vocals); Dave "The Edge" Evans (guitar, background vocals); Adam Clayton (bass); Larry Mullen, Jr. (drums). Recorded at Windmill Lane, Dublin, Ireland. "An Cat Dubh" and "Into The Heart" are listed as one song. BOY announced the arrival of four young men from Dublin who would conquer the world in short order. Bono and company were barely out of their teens when they recorded their first album, and their youthful vigor lights up every track here. Full of ambition, driven by a politicized (though not yet explicitly so) sense of purpose, the songs give listeners an idea of what it's liketo come of age in a strife-torn country and count on rock and roll as your means of transcendence. Bono's clear, strong voice rings out over the already-anthemic arrangements. Though none of the band members had yet developed much instrumental facility, their commitment and emotion are palpable in the simple-but-perfect parts they play. "I Will Follow" was BOY's calling card, unfolding with brashness and a sense of wonder as it chronicles the journey from boyhood to manhood, a trip the band had only just taken recently. BOY stands as an auspicious beginning to a long, successful career. SKU: 1011582

Live Fat Die Young
Performers: Zero Down, No Use For A Name, Anti-Flag, Good Riddance, Fabulous Disaster, Sick Of It All, Mad Caddies, Strung Out, Consumed, Less Than Jake, Frenzal Rhomb, NOFX, Rise Against, Lagwagon, Bracket, Propagandhi, Tilt, Wizo, Snuff, Me First & The Gimme Gimmes, Swingin' Utters. This compilation of Fat Wreck Chords' considerable roster of alternative/punk bands includes such hardy perennial acts as No Use For A Name,Propaghandi, and Lagwagon, all of whom deserve medals for service beyond the call to the disenfranchised youth of (by now) a couple of generations. It goes without saying that all these bands operate below (or above) major label radar, but they're all hugely enjoyable either despite or because of this. The amphetamine rush of Anti-Flag's "Seattle Was a Riot" sounds like the Gang Of Four on steroids-it's been a long time since music this headlong or political graced the nation's airwaves. Good Riddance's "Always" is a feisty two-minute romp through terminal teenage angst, while NOFX take a typically disciplined, musically muscular tilt at Hollywood ("Hollywood is a breeding ground for assholes..." who knew?) that fondly recalls the days of straight-edge innocence. Shaman [ECD]
Personnel includes: Carlos Santana (vocals, acoustic 12-stirng, nylon string & electric guitar, keyboards, timbales, rainstick); Rene Martinez (acoustic guitar); Musiq, Michelle Branch, Seal, Macy Gray, Chad Kroeger, Andy Vargas, JB Eckl, Alejandro Lerner, Placido Domingo, Dido, Melkie Jean, Governor Washington (vocals); Fernando "Toby" Tobon (electric guitar, cuatro, mandolin, bass, backgrond vocals);Ulises Bella (saxophone); Asdru Sierra (trumpet); Arturo Velasco (trombone); Jose Gaviria (keyboards, background vocals); Chester Thompson, Andres Munera (keyboards); John Ginty (organ, keyboards); Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Benny Reitveld (bass); Rodney Blade, Michael Shrieve (drums); Karl Perazzo (congas, percussion); Dan Shea (programming); Kike Santander, Cori Rooney, Shelene Thomas, Ozomalti, Ola Taylor, Pauline Taylor (background vocals). P.O.D.: Sonny (vocals); Marco (guitar); Traa (bass); Wuv (drums). "The Game Of Love" (w/ Michelle Branch) won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. On Santana's second Arista album, SHAMAN, the formula that turned its predecessor into a multi-platinum comeback machine is still fully operational. Once again, Carlos and his band of semi-regulars play backup to a revolving door of hit-making lead singers. Consequently, the album is a mixed, multi-format bag of great singles, each of which feature lots of Carlos's distinctive lead guitar (placed appropriately high in the mix). This time out there's even more variety than on SUPERNATURAL. Apparently not satisfied with simply crossing over, album co-producer Clive Davis ambitiously brokered an album that attempts to snare record buyers of every conceivable type. To this end, SHAMAN includes not only Latin, R&B, rap, and rock tracks, but also features grunge, classical and Nu Metal. Amazingly, the record is much more cohesive than would seem possible. In fact, the overall sound is so contemporary and radio-ready, only the straight Santana-style tracks seem out of place. SHAMAN is one thing for sure: a stunning pop record. SKU: 1076650

Unleashed
Personnel: Toby Keith (vocals, acoustic guitar); Willie Nelson (vocals); Chris Collins (acoustic guitar, mandolin); Biff Watson, Scott Emerick (acoustic guitar); Brent Mason, Jerry McPherson, Michael Thompson (electric guitar); Paul Franklin (steel guitar); Mike Haynes (trumpet); Clayton Ivey, Steve Nathan (piano, keyboards); Michael Rhodes (bass);John "JR" Robinson, Shannon Forrest (drums); Curtis Young, Wes Hightower, Scott Emerick, Vickie Hampton, Kim Fleming, Lianna Manis, Lari White, John Wesley Ryles (background vocals). If you pay attention to the mass media, the ostensible "big news" on UNLEASHED is the opening track, "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)," an anthemic song of vengeful, post-9/11 patriotism whose subtle-as-a-flying mallet lyrics and delivery make Barry ("Eve of Destruction") McGuire sound like James Taylor. Far more palatable are the 11 songs that follow, from the gutsy, churning "Who's Your Daddy?" to the modified Jimmy Buffett-isms of "Good to Go to Mexico," and "It's All Good," a much more satisfying take on the Twin Towers attacks that brings Bruce Springsteen to mind. The more black-humored eye-for-an-eye of the Willie Nelson collaboration "Beer For Horses" also surpasses the aforementioned, writ-large "message song," and it's Stones-like groove is almost enough to make one forgive Keith's insistence upon tacking a live introduction to "Angry American" at the closing to bookend the otherwise-appealing UNLEASHED. Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones
Original score composed by John Williams. You've got to love any album containing a composition entitled "Love Theme from Attack of the Clones." Whether the generally straight-faced Hollywood uber-composer John Williams intended this minor bit of hilarity or not, it does represent the interesting problem he faced when scoring STAR WARS EPISODE II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES (which is in fact the fifth STAR WARS film). How does one mate serious orchestral music with visions of furry creatures and pointy eared gnome-like characters in mind? Williams has faced such problems before in the STAR WARS films and he comes through yet again on this soundtrack. Whether he's tugging on your heartstrings with the dulcettones of the aforementioned love theme or delving into the darker, more ominous orchestral colors on "Zam the Assassin and The Chase Through Coruscant" (c'mon, that HAD to bring a smile to Williams's face), the composer/conductor manages to make his way through a variety of cinematic moods while still evoking the interstellar vistas to which these pieces are bound. Johnson, Tom Mitchell (trombone); Danny Bank, Phil Bodner, Romeo Penque (woodwinds); George Ockner (violin); David Sawyer (cello); Janet Putnam (harp); Mal Waldron (piano); Barry Galbraith (guitar); Milt Hinton (bass); Osie Johnson (drums); Phil Kraus (percussion). Recorded in New York, New York from February19-21, 1958. Originally released on Columbia (1157). This was her penultimate album, recorded when her body was telling her enough was enough. During the sessions with arranger Ray Ellis she was drinking vodka neat, as if it were tap water. Yet, for all her ravaged voice (the sweetness had long gone) she was still an incredible singer. The feeling and tension she manages to put into almost every track sets this album as one of her finest achievements. 'You've Changed' and 'I Get Along Without You Very Well' are high art performances from the singer who saw life from the bottom upwards. The CD reissue masterminded by Phil Shaap is absolutely indispensable. SKU: 4124327

Voulez Vous [Remastered]
ABBA: Bjorn Ulvaeus (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, banjo); Benny Anderson (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); Agnetha Faltskog, Anni Frid Lyngstad (vocals). Additionalpersonnel: Janne Schaffer, Ish Lededma, George Terry, Lasse Wellander (guitar); Jan Risberg (oboe); Lars O. Carlsson, Kajtek Wojciechowski, Halldor Palsson, Johan Stengard (tenor saxophone); Nils Landgren (trombone) Paul Harris (piano); Arnold Paseiro, Rutger Gunnarsson, Mike Watson (bass); Ola Brunkert, Joe Galdo, Rolf Alex (drums); International School Of Stockholm Choir (background vocals). Recorded at Polar Music Studio, Stockholm, Sweden in 1978 & 1979. Includes reissue liner notes by Carl Magnus Palm. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Jon Astley. 1979's VOULEZ-VOUZ, the Swedish foursome's sixth album, was probably their commercial pinnacle, as nearly half of the album's ten tracks became substantial hits. The discofied title track, the anthemic "I Have A Dream," Bjorn Ulvaeus' vocal showcase "Does Your Mother Know?" and the UNICEF benefit single "Chiquitita" were inescapable on AM radio in the waning days of the '70s. However, those tracks aren't the album's only merits, as the bittersweet "Angeleyes" and the downright spiteful "The King Has Lost His Crown" are among ABBA's best and most beloved songs. In 1979, ABBA were the biggest-selling band in popular music. The slick yet substantial VOULEZ-VOUS shows why this position was justified. SKU: 6500285

Da Real World [ECD]
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, Eminem, Aaliyah, Lil' Mo, Lady Saw, Lil' Kim, Da Brat, Gina Thompson, Nicole Wray, Redman, Juvenile, B.G., Beyonce, Timbaland, Big Boi (rap vocals); Darryl Pearson (guitar); Dante Nolan (bass). Recorded at Master Sound Studios, Virginia Beach, Virginia. DA REAL WORLD was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. With her debut album, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott proved that she could do it all--rap, write, sing, and produce. With her sophomore album, DA REAL WORLD, Elliott shows that she can do it again--and do it all just as well. Her singing talent adds R&B flavor to a great, bouncy hip-hop album. Elliott describes herself on the lead-off single, "She's A B*tch." She uses the term "bitch" in a positive way, redefining it as a strong woman who knows what she wants. The mellower "All N My Grill" boasts an empowered chorus of "why you all in my grill / can you pay my bills?" It is sure to be the next anthem adopted by Elliott's sisters. Backed by super-producer Timbaland, Elliott delivers the beats and rhymes like no other rapper. DA REAL WORLD also finds Elliott teaming up with some of hip-hop's most unique performers, including Eminem, Redman, and Juvenile. SKU: 1018136

Surrender
The Chemical Brothers: Tom Rowlands, Ed Simons. Additional personnel includes: Jonathan Donahue (vocals, guitar, piano); Bernard Sumner (vocals, guitar); Hope Sandoval, Noel Gallagher(vocals); Bobby Gillespie (background vocals). Recorded at Orinoco Studios, South London, England. While the band's previous album retreated from the carefully arranged popcraft of DIG YOUR OWN HOLE towards more familiar in-the-mix DJ territory, the Chemical Brothers once again prove themselves masters of the studio on SURRENDER. Things open on an upbeat, infectious note with "Music: Response," a track powered by tinny, bleeping synth effects straight out of Kraftwerk's "Pocket Calculator." Eminently danceable breakbeats and surging synth lines are consistent elements of SURRENDER--the Brothers haven't abandoned their techno roots--but the arrangements are structured with more than dancing in mind. The varying timbres of the electronics, the dynamic range of the funk-derived rhythms, and the character of the spoken and sung voices that pop up throughout the album all contribute to SURRENDER's listenability. The album's second half even ventures into neo-psychedelic balladry on "Asleep From Day" and "The Sunshine Underground," with gently loping beats and swirling keyboards. "Dream On" recalls the Beth Orton contributions to DIG YOUR OWN HOLE with its folky acoustic guitar strumming, gently panoramic arrangement and '60s folk-rock structure. It is the contrast between club-oriented beats and spacey artistry that makes SURRENDER a success. SKU: 5048596

Grass Is Blue, The
Personnel: Dolly Parton (vocals); Bryan Sutton, Steve Buckingham (guitar); Jerry Douglas (dobro, background vocals); Jim Mills (banjo); Sam Bush (mandolin, background vocals); Stuart Duncan (fiddle, background vocals); Barry Bales (bass, background vocals); Alison Krauss, Patty Loveless, Dan Tyminski, Alan O'Bryant, Claire Lynch, Rhonda Vincent, Keith Little, Darrin Vincent, Louis Nunley (background vocals). Recorded at The Sound Kitchen and The Dog House, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Jerry Douglas, Steve Buckingham, Bryan Sutton, Sam Bush, Stuart Duncan, Jim Mills and Barry Bales. THE GRASS IS BLUE won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. "Travelin' Prayer" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Despite Dolly Parton's status as a bona fide country legend, it's surprising to see a singer who's journeyed to the heights of crossover mainstream pop putting out a hardcore bluegrass album on an independent label. But that'sjust the kind of left hook that attests to Parton's continuing artistic viability. Parton's accompanied by some of the finest bluegrass musicians in the world, including dobro wizard Jerry Douglas, mandolinist Sam Bush, and ace fiddler Stuart Duncan, all of whom have successful solo careers. To her credit, Parton plays it entirely straight here, without a hint of crossover; no drums, no electric instruments, just pure bluegrass matched by the purity of the marvel that is Dolly's crystalline voice. Hot picking naturally abounds, all in support of Parton's highly effective, no-frills delivery of bluegrass classics and her own compositions. SKU: 1025680

Supernova
Gonzalo Rubalcaba Trio: Gonzalo Rubalcaba (piano, keyboards, percussion); Carlos Henriquez (upright bass); Ignacio Berroa (drums, rainmaker). Additional personnel includes: Robert Quintero (congas); Luis Quintero (timbales, guiro); Jim Anderson (rainmaker). Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York from December 2-5, 2000. Includes liner notes by Howard Mandel. SUPERNOVA won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album. "Oren" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition. Gonzalo Rubalcaba's music is difficult to define since it pulls from a wide variety of cultural sources. In addition to jazz and Cuban music, his most pronounced influences stem from Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean. Suffice to say that Rubalcaba's music runs the gamut from intense to delicate, strident to vulnerable. Together with his virtuosic trio, he embarks on a kind of interstellarjourney throughout the known musical universe, citing the melodic statements of bebop, the rich harmonic vocabulary of 19th-century impressionistic composers, and quite often, the syncopated rhythms of Cuban dance music. Blending these together in a way that highlights both Rubalcaba's compositions and each player's improvisational talents, SUPERNOVA is a daring yet appealing release. Highlights include the hypnotic "Oren" and the meticulously arranged, blazingly fast tune aptly titled, "The Hard One." SKU: 1065966

Dark Side Of The Moon (30th Anniversary Edition) [Hybrid SACD]
This is a Hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD Players. All tracks were re-mixed in 5.1 Surround sound from the original 16-track master tapes. Includes new artwork and a new booklet by original designer Storm Thorgerson. Pink Floyd: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar, VCS3 synthesizer); Roger Waters (vocals, VCS3 synthesizer, bass, sound effects); Richard Wright (keyboards, VCS3 synthesizer, background vocals); Nick Mason (drums, percussion, sound effects). Additional personnel: Clare Torry (vocals); Dick Parry (saxophone); Doris Troy, Leslie Duncan, Liza Strike, Barry St. John (background vocals). Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, England between June 1972 & January 1973. DARK SIDE OF THE MOON was a benchmark record. It turned the musical world on its ear with a hitherto unseen combination of sounds, and changed things considerably for Pink Floyd. For this project, Pink Floyd resurrected older and unfinished numbers, some of which came from the multitude of soundtracks the band members had previously worked on. The film "Zabriskie Point," a study of American materialism from a foreigner's perspective, provided "Us And Them" (originally titled "The Violence Sequence"). Waters rewrote "Breathe" after its appearance on his and avant-garde composer RonGeesin's score for "The Body," a surreal medical documentary. Floyd and their long-time engineer, Alan Parsons, used a multitude of sound effects--from stereophonically-projected footsteps and planes flying overhead ("On The Run") to a roomful of ringing clocks ("Time"). Further adding to the record's mystique, barely audible spoken passages were sprinkled throughout--a result of hours interviewing random Abbey Road occupants about their views on insanity, violence and death. Floyd must have struck a nerve; DARK SIDE OF THE MOON remained on Billboard's albums chart for an astounding fourteen years. It made Pink Floyd a household name, elevating them to the level of the Rolling Stones and The Who in the rock pantheon. SKU: 1080756

New Directions
Personnel: Jack DeJohnette (piano, drums); Lester Bowie (trumpet); John Abercrombie (mandolin, guitar); Eddie Gomez (bass). Recorded at Talent Studio, Oslo, Norway in June1978. This 1978 set was the debut of the ensemble which went on to record and perform under the name of Jack DeJohnette's New Directions. Drummer DeJohnette is perfectly matched with bass player Eddie Gomez, trumpet player Lester Bowie and guitarist John Abercrombie. Bowie's multi-faceted trumpet sounds dance around the liquid guitar lines while the rhythm section bubbles underneath like a sonic lake that alternates between calm and foreboding. DeJohnette wrote three of the selections, including the wonderfully evocative opener, "Bayou Fever." The remaining two tracks were jointly composed by the quartet as a whole, borne out of group improvisation. "Dream Stalker" is a study in misty atmospherics, not unlike Weather Report's first album, while "One Handed Woman" is a gutsy and angular feast of potent interplay. SKU: 1016257

At The Golden Circle Vol.1 [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Ornette Coleman (alto saxophone); David Izenzon (bass); Charles Moffett (drums). Producer: Francis Wolf. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Golden Circle, Stockholm, Sweden on December 3 & 4, 1965. Oriignally released on Blue Note (84224). Includes liner notes by Ludvig Rasmusson and John Litweiler. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Blue Note's "Rudy Van Gelder Editions" series. This live performance in Sweden in the winter of 1965 has a historic feel to it. The listener senses European minds absorbing Ornette for the first time. This isn't his best trio-bassist David Izenson doesn't produce as rich a sound as does Charlie Haden (but that's unfair--nobody can compete with Haden's sound). And drummer Charles Moffett has a nice touch, but not the deepest groove. But there is a certain vibe between the players: one can sensethe affection between them. Ornette's playing is, for the most part, captivating. The most successful piece in "Vol. 1" is "European Echoes." It's a circus waltz that goes in and out of 3/4 time, slipping into a 4/4 swing. Izenson and Moffatt break up the time interestingly, and Ornette's melodic direction is always unexpected. Phrases end differently from where you think they will. Izenson's bass solo is surprisingly delicate. "Dee Dee" wanders a bit, but enjoyably so. There's always a puzzle-like element to Ornette's music. The listener has to decipher the code, fill in the missing information. This is light, abstract, grooving music given to us by a unique mind. SKU: 1070117

Concretes, The [ECD]
Debut album from Swedish indie-pop octet who cross the shimmering, close-harmony soul of 60s Motown girl groups with the lo-fi, shambolic style of classic 80s and 90s indie bands like the Pastels, MazzyStar and the Jesus & Mary Chain. Produced by the band and Jari Haapalainen (International Noise Conspiracy), the album includes the single 'You Can't Hurry Love' (which is not a cover of the Supremes classic). SKU: 6563699

C'est Si Bon
Personnel includes: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Ella Fitzgerald (vocals). Includes liner notes by Pete Welding. This CD contains almost all of Armstrong's late-period favorites, including "A Kiss To Build A Dream On," "Mack The Knife," "Hello Dolly" and "That's My Desire." Compiled primarily from concert performances from the '60s, throughout which Armstrong toured extensively with his All Stars (a group based on the traditional New Orleans ensemble), C'EST SI BON brings Satch's workhorses together under one roof, adding standbys from the '20s and '30s like "St. Louis Blues" and "King Porter Stomp" for good measure. As always, Armstrong performs like the true original that he was; displaying not only his emotive, rhythmically expansive playing and singing but his sensitivity as well, as evidenced in his lovely duet with Ella Fitzgerald on "Dream A Little Dreamfor Me." Even though by the '50s and '60s Armstrong's All Star shows were fairly standard rehashings of the tried and true hits, and C'EST SI BON is more of the same, one has only to hear the maestro's trumpet on "When The Saints Go Marching In," or his easy, grin-inducing delivery on "Sunny Side Of The Street" to succumb to the charms of the man who defined not only jazz, but most of modern American music as we know it. South Of The Border
Personnel: Charlie Parker (alto saxophone); Benny Harris (trumpet); Walter Bishop, Jr. (piano); Teddy Kotick (bass); Roy Haynes, Max Roach(drums). Machito & His Afro-Cuban Orchestra includes: Machito (maracas); Chico O'Farrill (conductor); Gene Johnson, Fred Skerritt (alto saxophone); Jose Madera, Flip Phillips, Sol Rabinowitz (tenor saxophone); Leslie Johnakins (baritone saxophone); Mario Bauza (trumpet, clarinet); Paquito Davilla, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Al Stewart, Bobby Woodlen (trumpet); Rene Hernandez (piano, bass); Roberto Rodriguez (bass); Buddy Rich (drums); Jose Mangual (bongos); Luis Miranda, Chano Pozo (congas); Ubaldo Nieto (timbales). Compilation producer: Michael Lang. Recorded in New York between December 20, 1948 and January 23, 1952. Includes liner notes by Henry Martin. This Verve CD pulls together recordings from 1949-52 that were originally scattered across a handful of 10" LPs. Seven of the tunes here come from the original SOUTH OF THE BORDER 10," which featured a typical Parker ensemble of the period (Walter Bishop, Jr., piano; Teddy Kotick, bass; Roy Haynes or Max Roach, drums) augmented by Latin percussionists Jose Mangual and Luis Miranda. The three opening cuts feature Bird blowing through arrangements played by Machito and His Afro-Cuban Orchestra (originally released on MACHITO JAZZ WITH FLIP AND BIRD); Machito and orchestra return for the extended "Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite" composed by Chico O'Farill. The small group recordings sound like small group Bird recordings without the driving tempos, ornate melodic structure or reliance on either blues or "I Got Rhythm" chord changes. On "No Noise (Part 1)", one of the shorter Machito tunes, it's particularly interesting to hear Parker stretch out over the simple two-chord vamp. The "Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite" includes solos by Bird but was not written with the altoist in mind. Rather, O'Farill wrote the piece as an extended jazz composition with occasional soloists; Parker was called in during the session to replace Harry "Sweets" Edison. SKU: 6535715
