Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) [Digipak] [Remastered]
Full title: Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy). Personnel: Brian Eno (vocals, guitar, keyboards, programming); Polly Eltes (vocals); Phil Manzanera (guitar); Portsmouth Sinfonia (strings); Andy McKay (brass); Brian Turrington (bass); Phil Collins, Freddie Smith (drums); Robert Wyatt (percussion, background vocals); Randy & The Pyramids, The Simplistics (background vocals). Recorded at Island Studios, London, England in September 1974. Personnel: Brian Eno (vocals, guitar, keyboards, programming); Polly Eltes (vocals); Phil Manzanera (guitar); Portsmouth Sinfonia (strings); Andy MacKay (brass);Brian Turrington (bass guitar); Phil Collins, Freddie Smith (drums); Robert Wyatt (percussion, background vocals); Randy & The Pyramids, The Simplistics (background vocals). Recording information: Island Studios, London, England (09/1974). TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN (BY STRATEGY), Brian Eno's sophomore solo outing, is a grab bag of freaky, science-fiction-dipped confections. Filled with a battery of innovative, unsettling effects, the album is darker and more complex than HERE COME THE WARM JETS. The artist shows an increasing willingness to experiment with texture, as on "The Great Pretender," whose whirling, oozing keyboard line and synthesized vocals approximate delirium tremens or a hatching hive of maggots, or on "Put A Straw Under Baby," which features the Portsmouth Sinfonia, whose members have no knowledge of their instruments. Yet Eno's grasp of melody and songcraft is everywhere: on the bouncing, absurdist/philosophical "Burning Airlines (Give You So Much More)," and on straight-out rockers, like the deliciously intense "Third Uncle" (which is propelled by the churning guitar of Roxy Music's Phil Manzenera, and is, arguably, the album's highlight). Concurrent with David Bowie's ALADDIN SANE-era alien aesthetic, Eno's tunes are even more otherwordly and warped than his glam cohort, making use of the full palette of bizarro synthesizer effects and creepy-cheeky postures. The songs, however, are as inventive and appealing as their treatments, and make for Eno's most solid--and experimental--pop album. TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN holds up magnificently, even years on in the artist's brilliant career. SKU: 6558425

Behind The Mask
Fleetwood Mac: Stevie Nicks (vocals); Rick Vito, Billy Burnette (guitar, vocals); Christine McVie (vocals, keyboards); John McVie (bass, vocals); Mick Fleetwood (drums). 1990's BEHIND THE MASK found Fleetwood Mac entering their fourth decade of recording and was the band's first post-Lindsey Buckingham album. Replacing Buckingham were Billy Burnette, formerly of Mick Fleetwood's side project The Zoo, and ex-Bob Seger/Jackson Browne guitarist Rick Vito. These new members helped resurrect the Mac once more as they collaborated with old members in writing new songs. One of the best tracks on the album is the Tex-Mex "When The Sun Goes Down," co-written by Vito and Burnette. Christine McVie proved to once again be the anchor in Fleetwood Mac, as a number of her songs formed the core of BEHIND THE MASK. These include a number of songs co-written with new husband Carlos Quintana, like "Skies the Limit" and "Save Me" (the band's first Top 40 hit of the '90s). In addition to writing with Rick Vito, Stevie Nicks offered "Freedom," a song co-written with Heartbreaker Mike Campbell. These were her last studio contributions to Fleetwood Mac before her departure from the band three years later. Heavy Soul
Personnel: Paul Weller (zither, piano, vibraphone, tamboura, handclaps); Mark Nelson (vocals, ukulele, zither, sitar); Steve Cradock (guitar); Brendon Lynch (harmonium, accordion, Mini-Moog synthesizer); Jools Holland (Wurlitzer piano); Steve White (percussion); Max Hayes, Clive Sparkman (hand claps); Rosie Wetters (background vocals). Engineers: Martin "Max" Hayes, Jamie Johnson. During his time with The Style Council, and indeed throughout his solo career, Paul Weller has struggled to reconcile hisattraction to '60s soul music with the modernity expected of a pop icon of his stature. More often than not, he's chosen to dive straight into the past. With HEAVY SOUL, he manages to strike a perfect balance--or maybe it's just that the retro swing of the pop pendulum has made his anachronisms au courant. With a booming rhythm section and thick guitar attack bolstering his vocals, Weller sounds better, if a little raspier, than ever. Guitarist Steve Cradock of English R&B aspirants Ocean Colour Scene aids Weller in his mission to mine the music of the late 60's and early 70's. Brendan Lynch's matter-of-fact production makes HEAVY SOUL sound fresh almost in spite of itself. SKU: 1011674

Live In The Classic City
Widespread Panic: John Bell, Michael Houser (vocals, guitar); John Hermann (vocals, keyboards); David Schools (vocals, bass); Todd Nance (vocals, drums); Domingo S. Ortiz (vocals, percussion). Additional personnel: Anne Richmond Boston, Col Bruce Hampton (vocals); Derek Trucks (guitar); John Keane (pedal steel, banjo); Randall Bramblett (saxophone); Chuck Leavell (keyboards); Bill Berry, Peter Jackson, Count Mbutu, CharliePruet, Dr. Arvin Scott, Garrie Vereen (percussion). Recorded live at The Classic Center Theater, Athens, Georgia on April 1-3, 2000. The arrival of LIVE IN THE CLASSIC CITY is manna from heaven to the kind of jam-band enthusiasts who refer to String Cheese Incident simply as "String Cheese" and to these fellas as "Widespread." Like any jam band worth its salt, Widespread Panic's magic can only be fully experienced in a live setting, and the three-disc documentary of the band's 4/00 Atlanta show certainly does the trick on that score. Widespread Panic may not be the only band on the jam circuit to mix funk, rock, blues, and jazz, but these Southern boys do it with a hell of a lot more grit and less noodling than many of their contemporaries. Oh, and there's a drum solo. SKU: 1073286

Girls Girls Girls (Expanded) [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Enhancements include the "Girls Girls Girls" video. Motley Crue: Vince Neil (vocals); Mick Mars (guitar, background vocals); Tommy Lee (piano, drums, background vocals); Nikki Sixx (bass, background vocals). Additional personnel: Tommy Funderburk, Phyllis St. James, Dave Amato, Pat Torpey, John Purdell, Bob Carlisle (background vocals). Principally recorded at Conway Recording Studios, Los Angeles, California in March 1987. Includes interviews conducted by Alan K. Stout. Digitally remastered by Chris Solem (1999, Future Disc). Despite plummeting to the depths of hard-drug abuse and alcoholism, Motley Crue scored another mega-hit album with 1987's GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS. With singer Vince Neil's vehicular manslaughter trial behind him, the Crue was able to concentrate solely on the music. But GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS is still not up to par with Motley Crue's first two classic albums, TOO FAST FOR LOVE and SHOUT AT THE DEVIL, due to the presence of many forgettable songs. Even bassist Nikki Sixx has since admitted that the out-of-control Crue should not have beentouring or recording at the time. The videos for the album's first two rocking cuts, "Wild Side" and the title track, were aired constantly on MTV throughout the summer of '87. A disturbing third clip was made for the ballad "You're All I Need" but was subsequently banned by the network. GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS also features a tribute to Sixx's late grandmother "Nona," an unnecessary live cover of Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock," and such anti-drug messages as "Dancing on Glass" and "Five Years Dead"-ironic in light of the Crue's known active-user status SKU: 1084752

Greatest Hits (Parental Advisory) [PA]
Debut album from the eighteen piece Cardiff rap troupe. The GLC claim influences through their modifications of songs from artists such as So Solid Crew, The Streets and...Paul Gascoigne. Tracks tackletopics such as their Welsh Heritage, irrelevence of American Rappers, gun control and the allure of drugs (the last of which is a recurring theme throughout). Def Leppard: Joe Elliott (vocals); Vivian Campbell, Phil Collen (guitar, background vocals); Rick "Sav" Savage (bass, background vocals); Rick Allen (drums). Additional personnel: Eric Carter (keyboards, loops). Producers: Def Leppard, Pete Woodroffe, Marti Frederiksen, Andreas Carlsson, Per Aldeheim. Recorded at Joe's Garage, Dublin, Ireland; Polar, Stockholm, Sweden, Rumbo Studios, LosAngeles, California. When these kings of '80s pop metal were making their initial splash on the charts, it would have been hard to predict that the 21st century would find them still intact, much less growing and prospering. Against all odds, weathering virtually every kind of disaster that can befall a rock band, Def Leppard has indeed survived. While many of their contemporaries find themselves churning out the same old sound on the oldies revival circuit, Def Leppard has pulled a Bon Jovi and changed with the times, managing to sound completely contemporary without seeming like sellouts. The panoramic power balladry of "Unbelievable" for example, could easily be a latter-day Aerosmith hit, while its not hard to imagine a post-grunge act like Dishwalla storming the charts with a song like album-opener "Now." That said, there's still plenty of the old Def Leppard magic here for longtime fans; those patented hooks, harmonies and churning guitar riffs that endeared the band to millions are very much present on X, they're just surrounded by some agreeably updated adornments. Gish
Smashing Pumpkins: Billy Corgan (vocals); James Iha (guitar); D'arcy (bass, background vocals); Jimmy Chamberlin (drums). Recorded at Smart Studios, Madison, Wisconsin. The Pumpkins' debut hit the music world at the height of the grunge phenomenon of the early 90s, and exhibited most of the usual characteristics - heavy rock riffs, often reminiscent of GN'R ("Siva," in particular), thrashing guitars and brooding, self-deprecating lyrics. However, GISH rose above the bulk of the college rock bands, revealing more refined songwriting sensibilities courtesy of Billy Corgan, and presenting astonishingly touching ballads ("Crush"). Clearly much more raw and naive than the band's later work on the accomplished SIAMESE DREAM and the ambitious MELONCOLLIE..., this album, nevertheless, set out the Pumpkins' agenda for rock and hinted at what was to come. Until The End Of Time
Personnel: 2Pac (rap vocals); Capucine (vocals); Left Eye, Outlaws (rap vocals); "DJ Quik" (various instruments); Greg Dalton (guitar, keyboards); Cold 187 um, Marlon Williams, Darrell Crooks, Danny Devoux, Eric Jackson, George Johnson, Eddie "Spanky" Alford (guitar); Ronnie King (keyboards); Corney Mims (bass); Carl "Butch" Small (percussion); KCi & Jo Jo, R.L., Lil Mo, 6 Feet Deep, TiffanyVillarrea, Honey, Tena Jones, Barbara Wilson, Tracy Hardin, Timothy, Channete Higgens, Channoah Higgens, Ta'He, Shiro, Vanessa (background vocals). Producers include: Johnny "J", LT Hutton, Mike Mosley, Tyrone Wrice, Kurt "Kobane" Couthon. Engineers include: Keston E. Wright, Ian Boxill, Ethan Mates. Includes liner notes by Afeni Shakur. This two-disc posthumous collection of previously unreleased tracks from '95 and '96 contains many poignant and prescient cuts, notable for their premonitions of early death and the inevitable outcome of a life lived on the edges of society. 2Pac's murder in 1997 spawned the usual macabre industry that surrounds prominent deceased figures, but UNTIL THE END OF TIME, with its touching liner notes from the rap star's mother, the former Black Panther Afeni Shakur, is a well-assembled collection. It features guest appearances from Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, KCi & Jo Jo, and the Outlawz among others, all of whom lend their unique talents to a collection of songs that serves to underscore the loss suffered by the rap community on 2Pac's death. Highlights include "Ballad of a Dead Soulja" and the epic, prophetic title track, which features quotes from Mr. Mister's '80s hit "Broken Wings." SKU: 1058365

Intermission
Despite founding guitarist Vivian Campbell's departure from Dio just a few months after the release of 1985's SACRED HEART, the band took to the road in the summer of '86 with replacement guitarist Craig Goldie in tow. To introduce the new lineup to fans, Dio issued its first live recording, the six-song INTERMISSION EP. Five of the tracks were recorded in concert and featured Campbell, while Goldie plays on the new, studio-recorded "Time To Burn." At the time, Dio's stage-show relied heavily upon theatrics. Look no further than the front cover of INTERMISSION, in which Ronnie James Diois pictured slaying a huge plastic dragon! But the group still created plenty of excitement onstage through its music. Longtime fans will get a kick out of "Rock N' Roll Children Medley," which features tracks from R.J. Dio's past bands, as well as "Sacred Heart," "Rainbow in the Dark," "We Rock," and "King of Rock and Roll." INTERMISSION serves as a worthy souvenir for the thousands of metal fans that caught Dio's bombastic arena shows of the 80's. SKU: 5049124

Volcano [ECD]
Fifth album from perhaps the definitive black metalband and the first in that genre to get a major label release (on EMI Norway). Embracing melody and commerciality, this is a bold attempt to expand the sound of a notoriously inflexible genre and push it into the mainstream, whilst maintaining an experimental edge. Frontman Satyr also runs the influential Moonfog label. SKU: 1077748

Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures Vol.1 (Taken From The Vaults)
It's hard enough to define a term like soul without attempting to dissect its sub-genres. Suffice to say that whereas Northern soul aims to set feet dancing, deep soul goes straight for the heart. The recordings on this sequel to Dave Godin's widelypraised first volume share a depth of emotion and a sincerity that has long made them collectors' items amongst the cognoscenti. Deep-soul knows no boundaries--Bessie Banks' "Go Now" has been retrieved from the generally uptown catalogue of Leiber & Stoller--but a lot of its exponents came from the Southern states and certain local producers (Jerry Williams Jr) and labels (SSS International, Ronn) are sure signs of quality. Dave Godin is not above including some big names. Deep-soul gems from Otis Redding, Ben E. King, and the peerless Irma Thomas rub shoulders with one-offs like Toussaint McCall's magnificent "Nothing Takes the Place of You." Dave Godin writes lucidly about each selection and his stated belief that overlooked cultural artifacts will one day achieve recognition and enrich our lives is deeply admirable. SKU: 1009155

Palace Brothers
The second Palace Brothers album was originally self-titled (or untitled), though the moniker DAYS IN THE WAKE was appended tolater pressings. The release is at once a progression from and reduction of the twisted lo-fi country-folk of the debut album. DAYS is essentially just Oldham, his cracked tenor and his acoustic guitar. The songs aren't as unremittingly dark as on the previous recording, since Oldham injects a fair amount of stream-of-consciousness humor and light-hearted, elliptical song-poetry. The extreme sparseness amplifies the emotion in Oldham's voice and lyrics though, and on "You Will Miss Me When I Burn" the emotional desolation is harrowing, bringing to mind the best work of Mark Eitzel. The brainy non-sequitirs of the closing "I Am a Cinematographer" are evidence that there's more forethought than savant at work in Oldham's artistic process. SKU: 1007985

Burning From The Inside
Bauhaus: Daniel Ash (vocals, guitar, saxophone); Peter Murphy (vocals); David J. (bass); Kevin Haskins (drums). Engineers: Derek Tomkins, Gerry, Ted Sharp. 1983's BURNING FROM THE INSIDE is Bauhaus' most commercial-sounding album. It is arguably their most effective, and, sadly, their last album as a group, though numerous collections and live recordings have appeared in its wake. This album shows all of the group's strengths. Bauhaus creates an immediately identifiable 'mood' in the mind of the listener, as in the opening track ("She's in Parties"). They have an uncanny knack for revealing massive, dense beats in the middle of what would be, in others' hands, straight-ahead rock songs. Bauhaus also has a unique ability to wring poignancy and nostalgia out ofthe weirdest lyrical constructs--as in the album's centerpiece, "Who Killed Mr. Moonlight," introduced by piano and mournful saxophone. The album originally ended with "Hope," a brilliant three-minutes that advises "Make the most of a million times no" with choral vocals, a gorgeous, thick bassline, and a shimmering guitar. The CD adds several bonus tracks from singles, including the brutal dance groove of "Lagartija Nick." One of Bauhaus' most distinctive and successful singles, this darkly gleaming jewel showcases the group's trademark echoed vocals and Kevin Haskin's uncommonly precise drumming with cool horn section inserts.
