Ill Na Na
Personnel: Foxy Brown (rap vocals); Blackstreet, Khadijah Bass (vocals); Havoc, Method Man, Jay-Z, Kid Capri (rap vocals); Rich Nice (spoken vocals, keyboards, drum programming); George Pearson (keyboards). Producers include: Poke, Tone, Havoc, Rich Nice. Engineers include: Mario Rodriguez, John Shriver. Recorded at The Hit Factory, Chung King and Battery Studios, New York, NewYork. Between her appearances on Toni Braxton and LL Cool J remixes, and her anthemic duets with Jay-Z, Foxy Brown (who shouldn't be confused with the reggae singer of the same name) made a name for herself even before dropping a record of her own. Her lengthy resume and hit-making potential helped her land a deal with Def Jam Records. She now runs with the influential hip-hop crew The Firm (which includes Nas and AZ), but her debut, ILL NA NA, proves she can easily stand on her own feet. ILL NA NA finds Brown flowing over both hard-core beats ("The Promise," courtesy of Mobb Deep's Havoc) and smooth R&B tracks ("Get Me Home," featuring the harmonies of Blackstreet). Other songs are meshes of the two genres, an approach that has enabled many rappers to cross over. Labelmate Method Man contributes the chorus to the title track. SKU: 1001044

Black Sunday
The BLACK SUNDAY booklet contains 19 historical and scientific facts pertaining to the useage and safety as well as the medical and commercial benefits of marijuana and the hemp plant. Cypress Hill: B. Real, Sen-Dog, DJ Muggs. Producers: DJ Muggs, T-Ray. "I Ain't Goin' Out Like That" was nominated for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards. Recorded at 38 Fresh And Image Recording, Hollywood, California; Soundtrack Studios, Baby Monster Studios, Green Street Studios, Chung King Studios, New York, New York; Studio 4 Recording, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Up to SKULL & BONES, 1993's BLACK SUNDAY had been Cypress Hill's greatest commercial success, and it's no wonder. The album's funky grooves and mellow but danceable rhythms helped to expand Cypress Hill's audience, hooking fans of alternative rock as well as earningCypress Hill props from hip-hop die-hards. Fourteen solid grooves make up this album from the West Coast trio, beginning with the dope anthem "I Wanna Get High." "Insane in the Brain" and "I Ain't Goin' Out Like That" are already hip-hop classics, each featuring the signature rolling bass hooks that defined Cypress Hill's sound before the group began experimenting with heavy metal. Deftly culled soul and Latin jazz samples provide a smooth backdrop for the intricate rhythms featured here. Refreshingly intelligent social concerns also find expression, with a tolerance that's rare indeed in the isolationism of rap. BLACK SUNDAY is a delightful departure from the obsession with guns and money that usually taints the West Coast school's output. SKU: 1000397

Cocktails With Cole Porter
Cole Porter was one ofthe most important songwriters of the 20th Century. This 2004 disc is a fun and upbeat collection of classic renditions of Porter's songs. Many of the greatest American Songbook crooners are featured here. Among them, we hear Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis, Jr., and others. Many essential Porter gems are presented, including the sprightly "Just One of Those Things," the sensual "Night and Day," the cutesy "It's De-Lovely," and the haunting "Every Time We Say Goodbye." This album sparkles and shimmers with hard-swinging performances by the finest singers in jazz. Moreover, each vocalist is backed by sizzling-hot orchestral arrangements from Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and others. SKU: 6572728

Delicate Sound Of Thunder
Pink Floyd: David Gilmour (guitar, vocals); Richard Wright (keyboards); Nick Mason (drums). Additional personnel: Tim Renwick (guitars, vocals); Scott Page (saxophone); Jon Carin (keyboards, vocals); Guy Pratt (bass, vocals); Gary Wallis (percussion); Margret Taylor, Rachel Fury, Durga McBroom (background vocals). This comes with a 28 page booklet. This 1988 release by the seminal British outfit shows a band with a renewed vigor that comes out in their live show. After a bitter break with bassist and WALL mastermind Roger Waters, the band finally regrouped minus their erstwhile leader, with the rights to the Floyd name. They recorded and toured behind A MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON, and that tour is captured here. Produced by vocalist/guitarist David Gilmour, the album is a smooth performance from a group usually considered to be a studio band. Classics such as "Wish You Were Here" and "Comfortably Numb" are given room to breathe, making for refreshing variations on the original versions. Radio hits such as "On the Turning Away" are also given new light in the live format, with a choir adding depth. More than just a display of arena rock power, THUNDERshows seasoned veterans jamming on timeless material. Closing with a spirited "Run Like Hell", this album gives the listener a picture of one of life's essential experiences, a Pink Floyd concert. SKU: 1005278

Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Red Hot Chili Peppers: Anthony Kiedis (vocals); John Frusciante (guitar); Flea (bass); Chad Smith(drums). Additional personnel includes: Brendan O'Brien (Melltron); Pete Weiss (Jew's harp); Gail Frusciante (background vocals). With BLOODSUGARSEXMAGIK the Chilis produced the defining moment of funk rock and the high point of their career. Raunchy and explicit from the first, the lyrical content was not for the easily offended and frequently strayed into misogyny. Musically, it straddled metal and funk with ease; in addition to the stomping, infectious rockers ("Give It Away," "The Power Of Equality") and the downright funky ("Mellowship Slinky," "Apache Rose Peacock"), all underpinned by Flea's virtuosic but unselfish basslines, the band also showed themselves capable of writing surprisingly melodic ballads ("Breaking The Girl," "Under The Bridge"). Killing The Dragon
Personnel: Ronnie James Dio (vocals); Doug Aldrich (guitar); Jimmy Bain (keyboards, bass); Scott Warren (keyboards); Simon Wright (drums). Recorded at Total Access, Redondo Beach, California. Sword-and-sorcery maven Ronnie James Dio keeps trucking in these Lord Of The Rings/Harry Potter times with KILLING THE DRAGON, his ninth studio album. Retaining the same line-up as 2000's MAGICA, the only change comes in the shape of former Hurricane/House Of Lords guitarist Doug Aldrich. Although it's easy to dismiss Dio the lyricist as some guy who tends to write about rainbows, spells and other fantasy-linked matter, this particular outing has him penning allegories firmly rooted in the 21st century. The galloping title track alludes to electronic serfdom and digital dreams while taking aim at thegrip computers and the internet have on society. "Rock & Roll" addresses the knee-jerk self-censorship some radio stations perpetuated immediately following 9/11's tragic events. The longtime supporter of the charity The Children of the Night enlisted the aid of the King's Harbor Church Children's Choir to deliver the poignant-but-heavy "Throw Away Children." The rocking "Push" features an Aldrich guitar solo that cleaves closely to predecessor Vivian Campbell's penchant for tossing in Middle Eastern-flavored flourishes, while Scott Warren's keyboard runs on "Before The Fall" bring to mind Deep Purple great Jon Lord. BR5-49
BR5-49: Gary Bennett (vocals, acoustic guitar); Chuck Mead (vocals, electric & acoustic guitars); Don Herron (steel guitar, dobro, fiddle, mandolin, acoustic guitar); Smilin' Jay McDowell (acoustic bass); "Hawk" Shaw Wilson (background vocals, drums). Additional personnel: Mike Janas (acoustic guitar, 6-string bass, percussion). Recorded at The Castle Recording Studios, Franklin, Tennessee and Woodland Digital, Nashville, Tennessee. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. "Cherokee Boogie" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Nasvhille'shottest signing of 1996 is a well-schooled (and tres cool) quintet that combines tradition with innovation to create a sound at once fresh and familiar. BR5-49 have obviously done their country homework, which is evident as much in their proficiency on steel guitar, fiddle and mandolin as in their covers of tunes by country legends Webb Pierce, Mel Tillis and Moon Mullican. Despite their honky-tonk roots, BR5-49 are an expansive country-rock unit who sound equally at home laying down a rockabilly beat on "Little Ramona (Gone Hillbilly Nuts)" and showing off their collective vocal chops on Gram Parsons' "Hickory Wind." Vocalists/guitarists Chuck Mead and Gary Bennett are no slouches when it comes to original songs either. Mead's "Chains Of This Town" is a harrowing tale of a man on death row, with a snappy Mexican lilt that belies the dark subject matter. On "Are You Gettin' Tired Of Me" Bennett proves he doesn't have to dip into his record collection to come up with a classic country tearjerker. SKU: 1001883

In The Right Place
Personnel: Dr. John (vocals, piano, organ, percussion); Allen Toussaint (acoustic guitar, piano, electric piano, congas, tambourine, background vocals); David Spinozza (guitar); Gary Brown (acoustic & electric saxophones, horns); Ralph MacDonald (percussion); Robbie Montgomery, Jessie Smith (background vocals). The Meters: Leo "Breeze" Nocentelli (guitar); Arthur "Red" Neville (organ); George "Freak Man" Porter (bass); Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste (drums). Recorded at Criteria Sound, Miami, Florida. Originally released on Atco. After GUMBO, his album of classic New Orleans covers, Dr. John released IN THE RIGHT PLACE, his finest set of original funk to date. Perhaps inspired by his exploration of some of New Orleans' finest writers and musicians on the prior release, these tunes bristle with sassy confidence and mysteriously hypnotic grooves. The good Doctor is backed throughout by the Crescent City's own preeminent funk quartet, The Meters. Setting aside the more obscure exotica of his previous outings, these numbers are supple, subtle, and sturdy. They're soulful (check out "Just The Same"), and eminently rhythmic. The song by which many people know him best, the opening track "Right Place Wrong Time," yielded his biggest chart hit (#9), followed by the much loved "Such A Night." IN THE RIGHT PLACE was produced by Allen Toussaint, whose own tune,"Life," is just one of the continuous string of highlights that comprise this timeless and essential album. SKU: 1011560

My Ride's Here
Personnel includes: Warren Zevon (vocals, arranger, guitar, keyboards); Sid McGuiness (guitar); Katy Salvidge (fiddle, pennywhistle); Genius String Quartet (strings); Paul Shaffer, Michael Wolff (organ); Sheldon Gumberg, Tony Levin (bass); Anton Fig (drums); Jordan Zevon, David Letterman, Ariel Zevon (background vocals). Engineers include: Noah Scot Snyder, Michael J. McDonald, Michael Delugg. Recorded at Anatomy Of A Headache, Private Island, Los Angeles, California; Spike, The Ed Sullivan Theatre, Pilot Studios, New York, New York. Warren Zevon's first release on the Artemis label, LIFE'LL KILL YA, stripped down his sound to bare bones, exposing in sharp relief his sardonic wit and undeniable songcraft. The follow-up MY RIDE'S HERE manages to return to the forceful, full-band rock sound of Zevon's salad days while keeping the quirky songwriting knack intact. Whether Zevon is singing about the violent exploits of a hockey player "Hit Somebody! (The Hockey Song)" or musing about Albert Einstein's way with the ladies ("Genius"), his knack for combining decidedly original (some might go so far as to say odd) subject matter with visceral rock riffs and catchy pop hooks remains intact. Zevon hasn't made the upper decks of the charts since the days of "Werewolves of London," and MY RIDE'S HERE probably won't change that fact, but that's just further proof of these songs' inherent aesthetic worth. Long may Warren run. SKU: 1071786

New Old Songs (Remixes)
NEW OLD SONGS is a collection of Limp Bizkit remixes. While Limp Bizkit scrambled to find a replacement guitarist for the vacancy left by Wes Borland, mastermind Fred Durst found a way to breathe new life into selected tracks from the band's canon. NEW OLD SONGS reads like a who's who of 2001's hottest DJ's. "Nookie" sounds funkier and possibly more compelling than the original, as manipulated by The Neptunes, while Timbaland puts a fresh spin on "Take a Look Around"with hip-hop help from MC's E-40 and Eightball. Limp Bizkit's own man behind the turntables (DJ Lethal) takes center stage with his cut-up version of "Break Stuff." Xzibit checks in with DJ Premier on "Getcha Groove On," while Durst tries his own hand at remixing with guest vocals by Everlast on "Faith/Fame." NEW OLD SONGS is a great introduction for hip-hop fans that find rap metal a bit hard to swallow, as these well produced remixes simultaneously appease hungry Bizkit fans. SKU: 1068591

Yes Album, The [Remastered]
Yes: Jon Anderson (vocals, percussion); Steve Howe (acoustic & electric guitars, vachalia, background vocals); Tony Kaye (piano, organ,Moog synthesizer); Chris Squire (bass, background vocals); Bill Bruford (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Colin Goldring (recorder). Recorded at Advision Studios, London, England in Autumn 1970. Originally released on Atlantic (8283). All tracks have been digitally remastered. OK, so much of Yes's output was pretentious, overblown and over-long. However, that does not detract from the volume of adventurous and technically brilliant work that lies buried beneath the less enduring (and endearing) stuff. The Yes Album benefits from having been recorded before Jon Anderson's lyrics became embarassingly obtuse, and before the producers lost the use of their fader fingers. The album opens with a storming "Yours Is No Disgrace," Steve Howe excels on "The Clap," the band take "Starship Trooper" into orbit, and we all sing along to "I've Seen All Good People." It's really not all that proggy after all. SKU: 1002658

Pendulum [Remastered]
Creedence Clearwater Revival: John Fogerty (vocals, guitar); Tom Fogerty (guitar); Stu Cook (bass); Doug Clifford (drums). Includes liner notes by Joel Selvin. Digitally remastered utilizing the 20-Bit K2 Super Coding System by Shigeo Miyamoto (JVC Studios). Although not as flawless as 1969's WILLY & THE POOR BOYS or 1970's COSMO'S FACTORY, PENDULUM (also released in '70) certainly has its moments. And besides, it's amazing that the band released even one album, let alone two, in 1970 due to their never-ending touring schedule. It may only contain one certified hit single (the touching ballad "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?"), but PENDULUM stillcontains a wealth of strong, often overlooked CCR compositions. Both "(Wish I Could) Hideaway" and "Hey Tonight" have become staples on FM classic rock radio over the years, due to John Fogerty's memorable melodies and gritty singing style. The album opener, "Pagan Baby" contains all the elements of a CCR classic (a great guitar riff, tight ensemble playing, etc.), but remains one of the band's most underrated songs. You'll also find such first rate tracks as the poppy sing-a-long "Molina," the ballad "It's Just A Thought" (which contains organ work similar to Blind Faith-era Steve Winwood), and the reflective album-closer "Rude Awakening #2," one of the band's few instrumentals. Ultimate Collection
The Four Tops: Levi Stubbs, Renaldo "Obie" Benson, Abdul "Duke" Fakir, Lawrence Payton. Additional personnel: The Andantes (background vocals). Producers: Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, William "Mickey" Stevenson, Ivy Jo Hunter, Michael Brown. Compilation producer: Pat Lawrence. Recorded between 1964 and 1982. Includes liner notes by Steven Ivory. An all but impossible to beat single disc greatest hits set, this collection covers just about every crucial stage of the Tops' career. During Motown's 1960s glory days, the Tops were abetted by the brilliant writing/producing team of Holland-Dozier-Holland. The timeless soul classics that sprung forth, including "Baby I Need Your Loving" and the epic "Reach Out I'll Be There," are indeed essential. The group's post-HDH career is surprisingly rewarding, from soulful covers of Tim Hardin and the Left Banke, totheir early 1970s successes at ABC/Paramount ("Ain't No Woman Like the One I Got"), and their disco era smash ("When She Was My Girl"). If you only have room for one Four Tops album, this is the one to grab. SKU: 1053799

Electriclarryland
Butthole Surfers: Gibby Haynes (vocals); Paul Leary (guitar); King Coffey (drums). Additional personnel: Fooch (pedal steel guitar); John Hagen (cello); Mark Eddinger (keyboards); Andrew Weiss, Bill Carter (bass); Danno Saratak (drum programming). Producers: Paul Leary (tracks 1-2, 5, 8, 11-13); Steve Thompson (tracks 3-4, 6-7, 9-10). Engineers: Stuart Sullivan (tracks 1-2, 4-5, 8, 11-13); Chris Shaw (tracks 3, 6-7, 9-10). The notorious Butthole Surfers continue their onslaught of gloriously twisted guitar rock on ELETRICLARRYLAND. Singer Gibby Haynes is like a skid-row bum in a Kabuki theater, donning the masks of various characters and investing all of them, from the psychedelic shaman of "Pepper" tothe apocalyptic ranter of "Birds," with trailer-park trashiness. The other Surfers match Haynes step for step, generating an unrelenting barrage of organized chaos. Over the course of their decade-plus tenure as kings of bizarro avant-punk, these Texans have learned to temper their freneticism with a more reserved, if equally skewed, sensiblility. Toward this end, "Let's Talk About Cars," with its low-key atmospherics, and the almost pastoral "Pepper" provide a welcome contrast to the band's famous sonic assault. SKU: 5046147

Rock 'n' Roll Collection
Personnel: Johnny Winter (vocals, guitars, harmonica, drums); Rick Derringer (vocals, guitar); Edgar Winter (vocals, saxophone); Randy Jo Hobbs (vocals, bass);Bob Margolin (electric guitar); Floyd Radford (guitar); James Cotton (harmonica); Jeremy Steig (flute); Stephen Ralph Sefsik (alto saxophone); A. Wynn Butler (tenor saxophone); Norman Ray (baritone saxophone); Karl Garin (trumpet); "Pine Top" Perkins, Dan Hartman (piano); Tom Shannon, Jon Paris (bass); Charles Calmese (electric bass); Randy Z, Richard Hughes, Chuck Ruff, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith (drums); Bobby Caldwell, "Uncle" John Turner (percussion); Carrie Hossell, Peggy Bowers, Elsie Senter (background vocals). Producers: Johnny Winter, Rick Derringer, Edgar Winter. Compilation producer: Lawrence Cohn. Includes liner notes by Mark Humphrey. Digitally remastered by David Mitson (Sony Music Studios, Los Angeles). A well-chosen two-disc anthology of Johnny Winter's Columbia Records years, A ROCK 'N' ROLL COLLECTION is aptly named. Although rooted in the blues--and although his post-Columbia work is much more authentically blues-oriented--the albums Johnny Winter recorded for Columbia, from 1969's JOHNNY WINTER to 1977's NOTHIN' BUT THE BLUES were at heart rock & roll albums with bluesy tendencies. Eschewing chronology, the 22 lengthy tracks--more than two hours total playing time--are instead arranged not unlike a really solid mix tape, in an ascending order of intensity. Disc One, for example, builds from the fiery original version of "Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo"--later a hit for its author, Rick Derringer, who plays second lead on this version from 1970's JOHNNY WINTER AND--to a scorching live version of the standard "Baby Whatcha Want Me to Do." There's nothing here a longtime fan won't already own, but it's a note-perfection introduction for the newly curious. SKU: 1009460

Vintage (The Very Best Of Moby Grape)
Personnel includes: Bob Mosley (vocals, guitar); Skip Spence, Peter Lewis (guitar); JerryMiller (bass); Don Stevenson (drums). Additional personnel: Arthur Godfrey (banjo, ukulele); Lou Waxman And His String Orchestra. Compilation producer: Bob Irwin. Recorded between 1967-1969. Includes liner notes by David Fricke. All tracks are in stereo except tracks 22-23 on disc 1 which are mono. Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). VINTAGE - THE VERY BEST OF MOBY GRAPE includes a 27-page booklet containing extensive biographical information, track-by-track annotations and photos. The subject of an intense label bidding war, Moby Grape's eponymous debut held great promise. Their three-part harmonies, trio of chiming guitars and five-man songwriting threat were an anomaly in a San Francisco scene where jamming was held in greater regard than actual song structure. Columbia Records won the bidding and proceeded to overhype the band into oblivion, at one point simultaneously releasing five singles, confusing retailers and the record buying public. Matters were made worse by the band's proclivity for bad behavior, and Moby Grape broke up in 1969, remembered more for their public relations fiascos than their considerable musical prowess. Let Love In
Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds: Nick Cave (vocals, piano, electric piano, organ, oscillator, bells); Mick Harvey (guitar, organ, drums, tambourine, shaker, bell, background vocals); Blixa Bargeld (guitar, background vocals); Conway Savage (piano, background vocals); Martyn P. Casey (bass, background vocals); Thomas Wydler (drums, shaker, triangle, tambourine, timpani, fish, background vocals). Additional personnel: Robin Casinader, Warren Ellis (violin); Tex Perkins, Rowland S. Howard, Mick Geyer, Nick Seferi, Spencer P. Jones, David McComb, Donna McEvitt, Katherine Blake (background vocals). Recorded at Townhouse III, London, England and Metropolis, Melbourne, Australia in September and December 1993. LET LOVE IN is a powerful but somewhat schizophrenic effort. It alternates between frenzied tales of decadence a la TENDER PREY, and stately, Leonard Cohenesque ballad of the sort found on HENRY'S DREAM and THE GOOD SON. The one common thread, as always, is the unrelenting horror Cave takes such delight in presenting in his lyrics. From the morbid funeral setting of the gospelly "Lay Me Low" to the sexual abuse scenarios of the driving, profoundly disturbing "Do You Love Me?" LET LOVE IN is not for the timid. The album's highlight is easily the understated, subtly syncopated "Red Right Hand," a tale of a satanic figure, with appropriate horror-film backing track.LET LOVE IN itself is the audio equivalent of a particularly engrossing, ultimately unnerving horror film. Original Masters
ORIGINAL MASTERS contains songs from 1969-77. All songs written by Ian Anderson. Anyone who owned a radio in the 1970s knows most of these songs by heart. A comprehensive retrospective of the career of Jethro Tull, this collection gathers the group's big hits and fan favorites, while also including early chestnuts that may not be familiar to listeners who weren't there the first time around. Showcasing an eight-year period during which the group rose to international prominence, ORIGINAL MASTERS includes at least one song from nearly every year of Tull's steady rise, from 1969's "Living in the Past" to the title track of 1977's SONGS FROM THE WOOD. This is an ideal set for people who want to skim the cream off the top of theTull songbook. All the essential songs are here--"Aqualung," "Locomotive Breath," "Bungle in the Jungle" "Skating Away," etc., but some of the other choices provide valuable historical perspective. Early songs such as the impassioned "Witch's Promise" from 1970's BENEFIT show off the unique sound Tull possessed before 1971's AQUALUNG transformed them into a monster rock band. SKU: 1004992

Brighter Day, A
Personnel: Ronny Jordan (acoustic & electric guitars, synthesizer, bass, programming); Stephanie McKay, Jill Jones, Philip Hamilton, Sivashakti Sivanesan (vocals); Todd Horton (trumpet); Steve Wilson (flute); Roy Ayers, Stefon Harris (vibraphone); Bruce Flowers (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, synthesizer); Marcus Persiani, Onje Allen Gumbs (piano); Brian Mitchell (Hammond B-3 organ); Joel Campbell (keyboards, synthesizer); Ticklah (keyboards, sound effects); Zachary Breaux (guitar); Steve Lewinson, Ian Martin, Andy Gonzalez (acoustic bass); Poogie Bell, Clarence Penn, Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums); Shivas Shanker (tablas); Neil Clarke, Cafe (percussion);DJ Spinna (programming, scratches); Mos Def. Producers: Ronny Jordan, Brian Bacchus, Joel Campbell. Engineers include: Steve Lewinson, Steve Hardy, Steve Parr. A BRIGHTER DAY was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. In the early-'90s acid jazz scene, stylish Brits like Brand New Heavies and Ronny Jordan experimented in fusing jazz with elements of funk and hip hop. On his Blue Note debut, Ronny Jordan displays an expanding vocabulary of smooth jazz talk and world beat accents without sacrificing his funky, streetwise slang. This self-taught guitarist breezes into the "Mambo Inn" for Latin spice, over to "New Delhi" for an acoustic Middle Eastern rendezvous, and on to a beefy B3 organ BBQ that grounds his mellifluous guitar flow on "London Lowdown," with the ease of a jet-setting, six-string seducer. Guests at the party include Roy Ayers adding his intoxicating vibes to a champagne-chilled cover of his own "Mystic Voyage," renowned drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts giving "5/8 Flow" its straight-ahead Brubeck-like kick, and rapper Mos Def dropping rhymes over DJ-Spinna's remix of the title track. The acid jazz craze may have fizzled, but Jordan keeps pouring smoothies from his golden-toned guitar blender that have enough adventurous flavors to satisfy. SKU: 1030046

Silver Apples
Silver Apples: Simeon (The Simeon, vocals); Dan Taylor (vocals, percussion). Producers: The Magic Theatre Partership. Reissue producer: Laura Graven. Includes liner notes by Simeon. Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCAMusic Media Studios, North Hollywood, California). When the Silver Apples were formed in the mid-60's, Simeon Coxe and Danny Taylor had no way of knowing that they were forging the prototype of experimental electronic music. Connecting over a dozen oscillators, Coxe created a homemade synthesizer which produced a world of futuristic bleeps, sweeps, distortions, and repetitious basslines. With the addition of Taylor's drums, they sounded like The Velvet Underground fronted by Nikola Tesla. In 1968 they released their eponymous album. Where their sound wasn't met simply with perplexity, it was met with perplexity and success--the single, "Oscillations," even cracked Philadelphia's top ten. The success of SILVER APPLES allowed the band to use a 24 track studio to record their second album, CONTACT. CONTACT consists of the same mix of bass-line grooves, synthesized tweaking and quirky lyrics, but is better produced. Unfortunately, the back-cover photo of Danny and Simeon in a Pan-Am jet cockpit surrounded by marijuana paraphernalia prompted a lawsuit from the airline. To make matters worse, the band's manager confiscated their equipment in a financial dispute. They disbanded in 1970, leaving a legacy of two of the most innovative and influential albums ever created. Indeed, it's difficult to imagine today's electronica without them. SKU: 1001778
