Jp [ECD]
This is an enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Jesse Powell (vocals, various instruments); Emerald Williams (vocals); Damon Thomas (various instruments); Bob Robinson (acoustic guitar); Tip Green (guitar); Tim Kelley, K-Fam (keyboards, bass, drums, programming); Tamara Jordan, Trina Powell, Jacob Powell (background vocals). Producers include: Damon Thomas, Curtis "Fitz" Williams, K-Fam, Tim Kelley, Bob Robinson. Engineers include: Al Abraham, Patrick Shevelin, Andy Haller. Recorded at Studio 43, The Record Plant, and Westlake Studio, Los Angeles, California; The Enterprise, North Hollywood, California. The inherent irony of JP is that although R&B crooner Jesse Powell presents himself as a mack daddy of the first order--complete with invitations to disrobe and offers of extreme carnal satisfaction--you know there's something more to the story. There's a disarming airiness to Powell's voice and delivery that's ingratiating enough to suggest more depth to his persona than he's willing to admit. Unlike dyed-in-the-wool lotharios like R. Kelly, whose love-'em-and-leave-'em ways are in little doubt, Powell sounds like the type whose big talk might just hide a nice guy with more on his mind than jumping in the sack. In any case, the slow-jam arrangements, vintage analog synths, and hip-hop beats are crafted to please any fan of contemporary R&B, whether one takes Powell at face value or not. SKU: 1062658

Something Ilk [Digipak]
Debut album from Irish-born singer-songwriter who got her break singing backups on Elbow'ssecond album 'Cast Of Thousands'. Produced by Ben Hillier (Elbow, Blur), this is a modern indie rock record in which Davey's faux-naif vocals, nestled in amongst spiky guitars, chiming pianos and clattering drums, deliver barbed and spiteful lyrics which have already seen her compared to PJ Harvey, Kate Bush and Bjork. Includes the single 'Clean And Neat'. SKU: 6569230

At The Blackhawk
Thelonious Monk Quartet + Two: Thelonious Monk (piano); Charlie Rouse, Harold Land (tenor saxophone); Joe Gordon (trumpet); John Ore (bass); Billy Higgins (drums). Recorded live at The Blackhawk, San Francisco, California on April 29, 1960. Originally released on Riverside (1171). Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. Digitally remastered by Danny Kopelson (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). The sextet sessions from which this one sprung started out as a collaboration between Monk and drummer Shelly Manne. The chemistry between the two was deemed uninspired after two days of playing, at which point tenorman Harold Land and trumpeter Joe Gordon were added for a new project. The result, culled from this one-night-only quartet+2's spot at San Francisco's Blackhawk, is high-energy bop. The trumpet/double-tenor texture is interesting, giving tunes like "Four In One" a thick forcefulness onthe head and a fun pluralism in the solo section. Land is busy and energetic over the changes, while Rouse plays in a more narrative style, referring more often to the melody. "San Francisco Holiday" has an almost big band sort of gaiety to it, with Gordon blowing sonic party streamers out of his horn. Monk is relatively conservative in his comping, but steps out with a mad energy on his solos. SKU: 1004586

People Who Grinned Themselves To Death, The
Full title: The People Who Grinned Themselves To Death. The LP includes a bonus 7" single ("Caravan of Love") and although the CD comes with a coupon to send in for that single, the coupon has not been valid since December 31, 1987. On their second (and ultimately last) studio album, THE PEOPLE WHO GRINNED THEMSELVES TO DEATH, the Housemartins continued the style of R&B-influenced jangle pop they had developed on their debut. This time around they add horns and a generally more sober tone for a worthy follow-up to their brilliant debut album. That's not to say the band has lost its sense of humor--check out the goofy "Me and the Farmer." The Housemartins often use upbeat music to counterpoint the savage social criticism of their lyrics. The title track and "You'd Better Be Doubtful," for example, are scathing commentaries on Thatcherite England. Standouts include "We're Not Going Back," which highlights Norman Cook's elastic bassline, the simultaneously funny and sobering "Five Get Over Excited," featuring Stan Cullimore's acoustic guitar and a horn-section fadeout, and "The World's On Fire," the record's best track, with its crunching rhythm section and Paul Heaton's acrobatic vocals. Following PEOPLE, the Housemartins called it quits. Cook went on to success as Fatboy Slim, while Heaton and drummer Dave Hemingway started the Beautiful South-aband that took their rollicking, upbeat music/searingly brutal lyrics formula to extremes only hinted at here. Cross Of Changes
Enigma: Michael "Curly MC" Cretu (vocals, various instruments, programming). Additional personnel includes: Louisa Stanley (vocals); Jens Gad (guitar). Recorded at A.R.T. Studios, Ibiza, Spain. On THE CROSS OF CHANGES, Enigma delves into the mystic with a musical fervorthat transcends sampling technologies and popular dance beats. THE CROSS OF CHANGES is a serene yet supremely sensual musical synthesis that might best be characterized as new age hip-hop. Enigma's worldwide hit MCMXC A.D. was notable for, among other things, its use of Gregorian chants as samples in a heady techno mix, which inspired such delirious interest in this ancient music that The Benedictine Monks Of Santo Domingo De Silos are currently enjoying their own Top 10 hit--CHANT. With THE CROSS OF CHANGES, Enigma's auteur Michael Cretu has merged a series of chants and simple devotional lyrics into a smooth techno-psychedelic wall of sound that is, in contemporary terms, a synthesized flipside to the techno-pop dance grooves of groups like Ace Of Base. Apples and oranges? Certainly, but both groups do employ texture and repetition to particular advantage in a pop context. However, where Ace Of Base finds nirvana in the incantory rhythms of reggae and the classic textures of old-fashioned analog synthesizers, Enigma extracts their hypnotic rhythms and textures from a variety of Eastern sources--at times evoking the ghosts of fellow mystics Pink Floyd, Brian Eno, Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. In celebrating the libidinous ambivalence of "I Love You...I'll Kill You," Cretu mixes whispered female vocals (Barry White, anyone?), distant electric guitar swells and synthesizer washes, with snippets of non-Western reed and percussion instruments (such as Indian tabla drums, which carry the groove like a Fender bass). THE CROSS OF CHANGES proceeds less like a series of loosely connected pop songs, and more like a dream suite, all candles and incense, quasar blips and dimly lit rooms. SKU: 1003083

Paint The Sky With Stars (The Best Of Enya)
PAINT THE SKY WITH STARS: THE BEST OF ENYA is a collection of the greatest hits of the angelic-voiced Irish songstress, with the added bonus of two new tracks--"Only If..." and the title track. From her beginning days with Celtic supergroup Clannad, through her staggeringly succesful solo albums, her soaring, dreamy voice has captivated audiences worldwide, helping to make her one of the most succesful recording artists of all time. Enya created a style whose wide open soundscapes were reminiscent of New Age, but more melodic, heavily based on the traditional Celtic music that formed much of her early singing career. This synthesis of styles proved marketable: the single "Orinoco Flow (Sail Away) was a global smash, underscoring the universality of her work. Its dramatic string arrangements and heavenly choir struck a chord which resounded across all cultural and musical boundaries. More hits followed: "Caribbean Blue" assimilated yet another cultural paradigm into Enya'sstyle, bringing the exuberance of the tropics into her ever-broadening scope, while "Boadicea" found another audience--a success on its own, it was later turned into the hit "Ready Or Not" by the Fugees. PAINT THE SKY marks a fitting tribute to a truly global talent. SKU: 1003382

Wall, The
Pink Floyd: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Richard Wright (vocals, keyboards); RogerWaters (vocals, bass); Nick Mason (drums). Additional personnel: Bruce Johnston, Toni Tenille, Joe Chemay, John Joyce, Stan Farber, Jim Haas, Islington Green School (background vocals). Producers: Bob Ezrin, David Gilmour, Roger Waters. Recorded at Superbear Studios, Miravel, France; Producer's Workshop, Los Angeles, California; CBS Studios, New York, New York between April and November 1979. Digitally remastered by Doug Sax (The Mastering Lab, Los Angeles, California). THE WALL was Roger Waters' crowning accomplishment in Pink Floyd. It documented the rise and fall of a rock star (named Pink Floyd), based on Waters' own experiences and the tendencies he'd observed in people around him. By now, the bassist had firm control of the group's direction, working mostly alongside David Gilmour and bringing in producer Bob Ezrin as an outside collaborator. Drummer Nick Mason was barely involved, while keyboardist Rick Wright seemed to be completely out of the picture. Still, THE WALL was a mighty, sprawling affair, featuring twenty-six songs with vocals--nearly as many as all previous Floyd albums combined. The story revolves around the fictional Pink Floyd's isolation behind a psychological wall. The wall grows as various parts of his life spin out of control, and he grows incapable of dealing with his neuroses. The album opens by welcoming the unwitting listener to Floyd's show ("In The Flesh?"), then turns back to childhood memories of his father's death in World War II ("Another Brick In The Wall [Part 1]"), his mother's overprotectiveness ("Mother"), and his fascination with and fear of sex ("Young Lust"). By the time "Goodbye Cruel World" closes the first disc, the wall is built and Pink is trapped in the midst of a mental breakdown. On disc 2, the gentle acoustic phrasings of "Is There Anybody Out There?" and the lilting orchestrations of "Nobody Home" reinforce Floyd's feeling of isolation. When his record company uses drugs to coax him to perform ("Comfortably Numb"), his onstage persona is transformed into a homophobic, race-baiting fascist ("In The Flesh"). In "The Trial" he mentally prosecutes himself, and the wall comes tumbling down. This ambitious concept album was an across-the-board smash, topping the Billboard album chart for 15 weeks in 1980. The single "Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)" was the country's best seller for four weeks. THE WALL spawned an elaborate stage show (so elaborate, in fact, that the band was able to bring it to only a few cities) and a full-length film. It also marked the last time Waters and Gilmour would work together as equal partners. SKU: 1000903

Here's Tom With The Weather
Fourth album from cult Liverpool indie-pop duo follows 1999's 'HMS Fable'. Moving on from the Britpop sound of that album (which itself missed theboat by a few years), this is a slower, more maudlin record, filled with a sense of resigned melancholy. They have added a folky flavour to their sterling songwriting and topped it off with splashes of strings, Latin percussion and brass. SKU: 1085743

Braveheart
Personnel: James Horner (conductor, keyboards); Choristers of Westminster Abbey (vocals); Tony Hinnegan (kena, whistle); Eric Rigler (Uilleann pipes); Mike Taylor (bodhran, whistle); Ian Underwood (programming); London Symphony Orchestra. Recorded at EMI Abbey Road, London, England. Includes liner notes by Mel Gibson. All music written by James Horner. The haunting bagpipes, a shiver of strings behind them...you can almost feel the cool fogrolling in from the sea, and across a Scottish field. A battlefield, in this case, in the year 1314. It was then that a band of half-starved, hopelessly outnumbered Scottish patriots fought for freedom at a place called Bannockburn. John Horner's soundtrack to "Braveheart," the Mel Gibson film about that epic struggle, is a lustrous, many-faceted, at times stirring piece of work. Even without the images from the film dancing through your head, Horner's themes have staying power and emotional substance. He maintains the feel of place throughout, but never relies too heavily on obvious instrumental cliches (the pipes, for instance, are used sparingly). No doubt, tracks like "The Battle of Stirling" will resonate a bit more if you've seen "Braveheart." That said, Horner's score has a rare quality: It is cinematic, but also enjoyable on its own as orchestral music. SKU: 1038008

Best Of Studio One Vol.1, The
The BEST OF STUDIO ONE series chronicles the influential role record producer C.S. "Coxsone" Dodd and his reocrding studio, Studio One, had on popular Jamaican music. Producer: C.S. Dodd. Compilation producer: Chris Wilson. Recorded at Studio One, Kingston, Jamaica. Includes liner notes by Chris Itone. Studio One is the name of a Jamaican recording studio and a label, both of which came to typify the rock-steady style of reggae. The bridge between ska and roots-reggae, rock-steady slowed down ska's insistent beat in favor of a more dance-friendly pulse. The R&B-inspired vocal groups who were popular during the early '70s helped to forge a style that was alluring on both a rhythmic and melodic level. The versatility of the rock-steady style is exemplified in the version of the American pop classic "Impossible," sung with lilting lyricality by the great Dennis Brown. The transformationof this very familiar melody from schmaltzy ballad to reggae single sounds completely natural here, and typifies the trend of American pop hits being remade as reggae tunes that continued in subsequent decades. Standout tracks include the sublime vocals of the Heptones on "Party Time" and Larry Marshall's "Throw Me Corn," which echoes Toots and the Maytals' classic "Pressure Drop." Slim Smith's heavenly falsetto on "Born to Love" is as pretty as Curtis Mayfield's. While a number of these tracks have fun in mind, songs like "Roots Natty" offer powerful calls to arms. Arch Allies (Live At Riverport)
Styx: Tommy Shaw (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Lawrence Gowan (vocals, acoustic guitar, keyboards); Gen Burtnik (vocals, electric guitar, bass); James "JY" Young (vocals, guitar, background vocals); Chuck Panozzo (bass); Todd Sucherman (drums, percussion). REO Speedwagon: Kevin Cronin (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Dave Amato (electric guitar, background vocals); Neal Doughty (keyboards); Bruce Hall (bass, background vocals); Bryan Hitt (drums). Producers: Joe Vanelli, Kevin Cronon, Dave Amato, James Young, Gary Loizzo. Engineers: Joe Vannelli, Craig Williams, Gary Loizzo. Recorded live at The Riverport Amphitheatre, St. Louis, Missouri on June 9, 2000. Includes liner notes by Tommy Shaw, Kevin Cronin, Irv Zuckerman. A live album celebrating the first joint appearance by the two undisputed kings of Midwestern rock in the '70s and '80s. Both groups feature crucial original members and sound exactly as they did in their commercial heyday. In retrospect it's no surprise that they connected with audiences; critics may have derided their prog-rock pomp tendencies, but in their own way both bands were as resolutely populist as, say, Springsteen or Mellencamp (Styx's "Blue Collar Man" and "Too Much Time on My Hands," in particular). Fanswill especially appreciate the three (.) versions of Styx's "Blue Collar Man," and REO Speedwagon's "Roll With the Changes"; each band does its own song solo, then joins with the other. Pres In Europe
Personnel: Lester Young (tenor saxophone); Lasse Werner, Rene Urtreger (piano); Al King, Pierre Michelot (bass); Lex Humphries, Christian Garros (drums). Producer: Don Schlitten. Reissue producer: Joe Fields. Recorded in November 1956. Includes liner notes by Dan Morgenstern. Digitally remastered by Malcolm Addey. Some jazz scholars argue that Lester Young's playing was never the same after his tenure in the military, where he was probably the victim of fierce racism. However, others claim that, due to his experiences in the army, his music became more sensitive, more beautifully subtle, and more finely wrought. Either way, his sound did become more airy, and more elegant (or delicate, depending on your point of view), in his postwarperiod. By the time of this recording, Pres was already in the throes of alcoholism, and not at his best. However, this live album documenting two dates in 1956, three years before his death, shows that his powers of invention were never impaired. Young plays creatively on all seven tracks, two of which are only short fragments. He really shines here on the ballads "These Foolish Things" and "Polka Dots and Moonbeams," and renders effective melodic twists and turns on his own classic composition, "Lester Leaps In." For Young aficionados, PRES IN EUROPE is essential, if only to get an idea of the legendary saxophonist's playing acumen in his final years. SKU: 1041411

Gaucho [SACD]
Steely Dan: Donald Fagen (vocals, electric piano, synthesizer); Walter Becker (guitar, bass). Additional personnel: Steve Khan, Hugh McCracken, Hiram Bullock, Larry Carlton (guitar); Tom Scott (alto & tenor clarinet, tenor saxophone, lyricon); George Marge, Walter Kane (bass clarinet); Michael Brecker, Dave Tofani (tenor saxophone); Ronny Cuber (baritone saxophone); Randy Brecker (trumpet, flugelhorn); Wayne Andre (trombone); Rob Mounsey (piano, synthesizer); Don Groinick (electric piano, clavinet); Patrick Rebillot, Joe Sample (electric piano); Chuck Rainey, Anthony Jackson (bass); Steve Gadd (drums, percussion); Bernard Purdie, Rick Marotta, Jeff Porcaro (drums); Nicholas Marrero (timbales); Crusher Bennett, Victor Feldman, Ralph McDonald (percussion); Leslie Miller, Patti Austin, Toni Wine, Lani Groves, Diva Gray, Gordon Grody, Frank Floyd, Zack Sanders, Valerie Simpson (background vocals). Recorded at Soundworks, A & R Studios, Sigma Sound Studios and Automated Sound Studios, New York, New York; Village Recorder, West Los Angeles, California; Producers Workshop, Hollywood, California. Includes liner notes by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Probably themost critically revered band of the 70s, Steely Dan's brand of slick pop with a dose of jazz/funk left a meagre but vital catalogue to cling on to. This was their last gasp at the onset of the 80s. Perhaps they were aware of the fact that they were too 70s for the 80s. This was their least accessible and most mature album (no criticism is intended), as the content washes over the listener like a warm shower. 'Hey Nineteen' is the hit single from this set, a radio-friendly nostalgic look at 1967, impeccable in production and with evocative lyrics. Lots of echoey Fender Rhodes and sensitive brass. Knocked Out Loaded
Personnel includes: Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar, keyboards); T-Bone Burnett, Jack Sherman, Ron Wood, Ira Ingber, Dave Stewart (guitar); Al Perkins (steel guitar); Larry Meyers (mandolin); Steve Douglas (saxophone); Steve Madaio (trumpet); Al Kooper, Vince Melamed, Patrick Seymour (keyboards); James Jamerson Jr., Vito San Flippo, John Paris, Carl Sealove, John McKenzie (bass); Raymond Lee Pounds, Anton Fig, Don Heffington, Clem Burke (drums); Philip Lyn Jones (conga); Milton Gabriel, Mike Berment, Brian Parris (steel drums); Carole Dennis, Madeline Quebec, Muffy Hendrix, Annette May Thomas, Damien Turnbough, Majason Bracey, Keysha Gwin, Crystal Pounds, Lara Firestone, Tiffany Wright, Chyna Wright (background vocals). The Heartbreakers: Tom Petty (vocals, guitar); Mike Campbell (guitar); Benmont Tench (keyboards); Howie Epstein (bass); Stan Lynch (drums). Engineers include: Britt Bacon, George Tutko, Judy Feltus. As with most other 1980s Bob Dylan albums, KNOCKED OUT LOADED is a piece-meal work--a combination of various sessions, performed by different groups of musicians, presenting the many sides of Bob Dylan. Touching upon juke-joint R&B ("You Wanna Ramble"), reeling Stones-like blues-rock ("Got My Mind Made Up," co-written by then touring partner Tom Petty and featuring his Heartbreakers), and a gospel arrangement of a Kris Kristofferson tune ("They Killed Him") which inevitably harkens back to Dylan's earlier spiritual explorations, the bard seems unsure where his own attention lay. Still, much as KNOCKED OUT lacks a sense of cohesion, it doesn't exclude the mystery of Dylan's best work. "Brownsville Girl," an eleven-minute opus co-written by playwright Sam Sheppard, is vintage Zimmerman, struggling to encompass an entire worldview within the context of a mid-tempo, brassy, Tex-Mex blues-as-passage-in-a-diary. It is a rough-edged diamond that is among the most unique parts of Dylan's entire catalog, and it was delivered so effortlessly that nobody dared think Dylan had lost any of his powers. SKU: 1006210

Essential Journey, The
Personnel: Gregg Rolie (vocals, keyboards); Steve Perry (vocals); Neal Schon (guitar, background vocals); Jonathan Cain (keyboards, background vocals); Ross Valory (bass, background vocals); Randy Jackson (bass); Steve Smith, Aynsley Dunbar, Larrie London (drums). Producers include: Steve Perry, Kevin Elson, Kevin Shirley, Mike Stone, Roy Thomas Baker. Includes liner notes by David Wild. Digitally remastered by Bob Ludwig (Gateway Mastering). The title says it all. The cream of the crop from one of rock's most enduring and successful bands. Hardcore Journey fans will want this because of the fidelity improvement; (the material is remastered from the original source tapes). Everyone else will want this because it's simply one of the best hits collections ever released. With new liner notes by Rolling Stone's David Wild, ESSENTIAL is over 130 minutes of music covering the group's 1978-1996 output. The classics ("Don't Stop Believin', "Who's Crying Now", "Faithfully") are known and loved by all, but it's the minor hits and album tracks that truly shine here. "Patiently" (a gorgeous ballad) and "Line Of Fire" (a boogie woogie crowd pleaser from the live CAPTURED) will make you want to purchase the original albums from which they hail, as will thebeautiful "Good Morning Girl." From blistering, adrenaline-pumping rockers ("Any Way You Want It", "Chain Reaction", "Escape) to raise-your-lighter power ballads ("When You Love A Woman", "Open Arms") and everything in between (the reggae-ish "Baby I'm A Leavin' You) there isn't a bad cut here. The Journey continues... SKU: 1070340

Other People's Songs
Erasure: Andy Bell, Vince Clark. Additional personnel includes: Ann-Marie Gilkes, Emma White(background vocals); Mick Martin. Having succeeded in paying props to Abba on the tribute EP ABBA-ESQUE, Erasure uses their tenth album OTHER PEOPLE'S SONGS to do the same with this mix of songs by both famed and more obscure bands. Vince Clarke remains a wizard behind the keys as his electronic textures help make The Righteous Brothers' "Ebb Tide" a snappy shuffle, Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill" an infectious romp of bubbling beats and the Three Degrees' "When Will I See You Again" burp and chirp. Frontman Andy Bell's flamboyance and soul meld perfectly on the Cockney Rebel nugget "Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)," (first made famous in this country via a Duran Duran cover), and the percolating version of The Ronettes' "Walking In the Rain." Interestingly, the duo avoided sticking strictly with dance and R&B choices and incorporated songs from a variety of other sources, ranging from singer-songwriter Cliff Eberhardt (a shimmering "Goodnight") to a pair of Buddy Holly songs (a delicate "True Love Ways" and a spry "Everyday"). Most appropriate is the closing version of the Buggles' "Video Killed The Radio Star" that finds Erasure firmly taking the synth-pop baton from their predecessors. SKU: 1078073

Live And More
Personnel: Marcus Miller (vocals, soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, keyboards, vocoder, guitar, bass, tambourine); Lalah Hathaway (vocals); Kenny Garrett (soprano & alto saxophones); Everette Harp, Roger Byam (tenor saxophone); Michael "Patches" Stewart (trumpet, flugelhorn); David Ward (keyboards, guitar, drums, percussion, sound effects); Dave Delhomme (keyboards, guitar); Bernard Wright (keyboards); Hiram Bullock, Dean Brown, Drew Zingg (guitar); Poogie Bell, Lenny White (drums). Live tracks recorded at The Montreux Jazz Festival, Montreux, Switzerland; The Blue Note, Osaka, Japan; The Blue Note, Tokyo, Japan; The Blue Note, Fukyoka, Japan; Studio tracks recorded at Camel Island and West Lake Studios, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Marcus Miller. LIVE & MORE was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. Bassist/composer/bandleader Marcus Miller is the kind of artist Ellington used to call "beyond category," so original he created a new paradigm in which to work. His style is an amalgam of funk, jazz, rock, R&B that embraces aspects of all these traditions without sticking to any of them. While some of his studio efforts have tended towards the slick, he really lets his hair down on this album, recorded live in 1996, mostly in Japan. Though heavyweights like Kenny Garrett and Hiram Bullock make their mark on the arrangements, it's Miller who carries much of the weight as few other bassists can. He moves deftly from jazzy, melodic statements to popping, slapping funk lines without batting an eyelash. In addition to tackling the tunes he wrote for his own albums, Miller revisits his illustrious past with a version of the title tune he composed for Miles Davis' TUTU, and he makes warhorses such as "Summertime" and "Strange Fruit" uniquely his own.
