Fire Garden
Personnel: Steve Vai (vocals, various instruments, guitar); Devin Townsend (vocals); Will Riley (keyboards); Stu Hamm, John Avila, Fabrizio Gossi (bass); Deen Castronovo, Greg Bissonette, Chris Frazier, Mark Mangini, Robin DiMaggio (drums); C.C. White, Tracee Lewis, Miroslava Mendoza Escriba, Kimberly Evans, John "Gash" Sombrotto, Mark McCrite, Jim Altman (background vocals). A massive, dense, ambitious musical project from one of the best guitar players currently breathing. It opens with a gunshot, sirens and general mayhem. What follows are 74 minutes of concept metal fusion madness. The disc is divided into two sections: "Phase 1" is mostly instrumental, and mostly the kind of frenetic, classically-structured, guitar-centric stuff Vai has spent his career defining and redefining. "Phase 2" adds words. All of it is really just a showcase for Vai's prodigious talent, and his desire keep the basic sound of the heavy-metal guitar intact while branching out into more ambitious directions. "The Crying Machine" is typical: Vai defines a simple melodic line, then explores that line, and the fretboard, with a vengeance. At times pure wail, at times staccato chirp, but always in the middle of everything, Vai's guitar is more a Presence than a mere musical instrument. It ain't rock and roll, it ain't jazz, it ain't pure fusion...it's simply Steve Vai! SKU: 1000251

Sweetheart Of The Rodeo (Legacy Edition)
The Byrds: Roger McGuinn (vocals, guitar, banjo); Gram Parsons (vocals, guitar); Chris Hillman (vocals, bass, mandolin); Kevin Kelley (vocals, drums). Additional personnel: John Hartford (guitar, banjo); ClarenceJ. White (guitar); Lloyd Green, Jaydee Maness (steel guitar); Earl P. Ball (piano); Roy M. Huskey (bass); Jon Corneal (drums) Includes liner notes by David Fricke. In the same year that Bob Dylan stepped back from his electric pilgrimages by releasing an album of roots-oriented morality tales, the Byrds took a symbolic flight to Nashville. Gone was Roger McGuinn's singular 12-string guitar sound and the acid rock that had had an effect on everyone from the Monkees to the Velvet Underground. McGuinn now played banjo, and bassist Chris Hillman doubled on the mandolin, both seemingly reconsidering their musical approaches. And while Dylan remained the songwriter of choice, his tunes now sat alongside a rearranged hymn ("I Am a Pilgrim"), a bluegrass version of a famous outlaw tale (Woody Guthrie's "Pretty Boy Floyd"), and a cover of the Louvin Brothers ("The Christian Life"). This was a musical turn, turn, turn, indeed. The obvious catalyst for all this reconstruction was the arrival of young Gram Parsons, and SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO played as if it was his coming-out party. He introduced Hillman and McGuinn to a musical world that seemed totally foreign to these predecessors of the Summer of Love, but one which lay a scant hundred miles outside their L.A. windows, in Bakersfield. Parsons' most important act was to help shape the overall sound of the album, but he contributed two original songs as well--"One Hundred Years From Now" and "Hickory Wind," a signature composition he'd record again. SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO caused an entire musical community to reconsider the musical traditions of America. SKU: 1086982

Doors In Concert, The
IN CONCERT is a 2-disc set containing ABSOLUTELY LIVE (1970), ALIVE SHE CRIED, and part of the LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL EP. "Roadhouse Blues" from AN AMERICAN PRAYER is also included. This set does not contain any previously unreleased tracks. The Doors: Jim Morrison (vocals); Robby Krieger (guitar); Ray Manzarek (organ, keyboard bass, background vocals); John Densmore (drums). Additional personnel: John Sebastian (harmonica). Compilation producer: Paul A. Rothchild. Recorded live in Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Pittsburgh, Detroit and Copenhagen between 1968 and 1970. This two-disc set contains almost all of the material from the band's livereleases, and paints an accurate picture of the magic these trailblazing iconoclasts were capable of making onstage. Free from the strictures of the recording studio, the Doors were able to stretch out both musically and conceptually, with extended jams and Morrison's spontaneous poetics making once-familiar songs into exciting new explorations. Speaking of extended pieces, the full version of the legendary "Celebration of the Lizard" is included here, in all its extended, suite-like glory. In front of an audience, the band's more visceral side prospered as well, as witnessed by versions of "Roadhouse Blues" and "Love Me Two Times" that make the studio versions seem almost tame in comparison. Blue And Sentimental
Personnel: Ike Quebec (tenor saxophone, piano); Grant Green (guitar); Paul Chambers (bass); Philly Joe Jones (drums). Although not as well known as other big tenor men like John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, or Benny Golson, Ike Quebec was a major contributor to the classic era of jazz and this 1961 Blue Note date captures him in his prime. BLUE & SENTIMENTAL is indeed one of but a few discs that Quebec recorded for Blue Note, although he was involved with thelegendary label as an A&R man and performed on many sessions by other artists. His huge, velvety tone and bluesy swagger are Quebec's signature as he lopes and swings through several classic tunes like Count Basie's lazy title track, the bouncing "That Old Black Magic," and Cole Porter's hauntingly melodic "It's Alright With Me." Filling out the quartet are no less than Grant Green, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, Blue Note regulars all, who shine brightly as always. Other choice moments on this disc include Quebec and Green's tight interaction on Quebec's catchy "Minor Impulse," the smoky ballad "Don't Take Your Love From Me," and the easy-going closer "Count Every Star." Son Of Cheep Thrills [ECD]
SON OF CHEEP THRILLS is an Enhanced audio CD containing regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Frank Zappa (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harpsichord, Synclavier synthesizer, percussion); Mike Keneally (vocals, guitar, synthesizers); Adrian Belew, Warren Cucurullo (vocals, guitar); Sal Marquez (vocals, trumpet); George Duke, Bobby Martin, Tommy Mars (vocals, keyboards); Roy Estrada (vocals, bass); Jimmy Carl Black, Terry Bozzio (vocals, drums); Moon Zappa (vocals); Steve Vai (guitar); Walt Fowler (trumpet, flugelhorn, synthesizers); Bruce Fowler (trombone); Don Preston (piano); Ed Mann (vibraphone, marimba, acoustic & electronic percussion); Tom Fowler, Patrick O'Hearn (bass); Ansley Dunbar (drums, tambourine, washboard); Vinnie Colaiuta (drums); Ruth Underwood (percussion). Producer: Frank Zappa. Compilation producer: Joe Black. Digitally remastered by Toby Mountain (Northeastern Digital Recording). This compilation is a successor to the previous year's CHEAP THRILLS. This time out though the focus is on studio recordings, with justa couple live tracks. The eleven selections here run the Frank Zappa gamut, from doo-wop ("WPLJ," from 1969's BURNT WEENIE SANDWICH) to chamber-jazz instrumentals ("Twenty Small Cigars," from 1970's CHUNGA'S REVENGE and "The Legend of the Golden Arches" from 1968's UNCLE MEAT). Also included are proto-metal hijinks ("Ya Hozna," from 1984's THEM OR US) and solo-constructed keyboards orchestrations ("Night School," from 1986's JAZZ FROM HELL). Anyone uncertain of just what Zappa's all about would do well to start with this fairly straightforward sampler. SKU: 1004754

J. To Tha L-O (The Remixes) [PA]
Personnel includes: Jennifer Lopez, Ja Rule, Anastacia, Fat Joe, P. Diddy, G-Dep, Caddillac Tah, 50 Cent. Producers include: Richie Jones, Cory Rooney, Rodney Jerkins, Emilo Estefan Jr., Sean "Puffy" Combs. With its collection of remixed hits, J TO THA L-O! is Jennifer Lopez's bid to establish her place in the world of dance music. Guest shots abound as fellow Bronx native Fat Joe pops up on the chart-topping RJ Schoolyard Mix of "Love Don't Cost A Thing" while P. Diddy and G. Dep sprinkle rhymes over the Tom Tom Club-flavored bleeping of the Bad Boy Remix of "Feelin' So Good." JaRule also makes his presence known on the Murder Remix of "I'm Real" before hooking up with Caddilac Tah to transform "Ain't It Funny" into a slower, hip-hop flavored outing. Elsewhere, a bevy of producers take Lopez into various strains of dance music. Pablo Flores puts a house spin on "Let's Get Loud," Metro's Mark and Jeff Taylor take "I'm Walking On Sunshine" to Ibiza via jacked-up BPM and breezy flamenco guitar, and Hex Hector pumps ambient-flavored beats into a juiced version of "Waiting For Tonight." Co-written by hubby Cris Judd, the ballad "Alive" (from the motion picture ENOUGH) is the only cut that deviates from J TO THAT L-O!'s all-encompassing dance theme. SKU: 1070157

Funk Power 1970
Personnel: James Brown (vocals, piano); Bobby Byrd (vocals, organ); Phelps "Catfish" Collins, Hearlon "Cheese" Martin, Bobby Roach (guitar); Robert "Chopper" McCollough (tenor saxophone); St. Clair Pinckney (baritone saxophone); Jerone "Jasaan" Sanford, Clayton "Chicken" Gunnels, Daryl "Hasaan" Jamison (trumpet); Fred Wesley (trombone); William "Bootsy" Collins (bass); John "Jabo" Starks, Clyde Stubblefield (drums); Johnny Griggs (congas). Compilation producers: Harry Weinger, Alan Leeds. Engineers include: Ron Lenhoff. Recorded at Starday Studios, Nashville, Tennessee; King Studios, Cincinnati, Ohio; Bobby Smith Studios, Macon, Georgia; Rodel Studios, Washington, DC between April 25, 1970 and January 26, 1971. Includes liner notes by Alan Leeds. Digitally remastered by Gary N. Mayo (Polygram Studios). Subtitled 1970: A BRAND NEW THANG, this year was indeed a pivotal one for James Brown. His entire band quit and he quickly assembled a new and much smaller outfit centered around 18-year-old bass whiz Bootsy Collins. Where his previous Flames had been choreographed to turn or stop on a dime both on stage and on record, this youthful new combo, dubbed the J.B.'s, had an unruly quality; they were an edgier, scruffier lot. The selections on this collection feature numerous previously unreleased unedited takes and alternate mixes. Brown recorded at a furious pace, with "Sex Machine" bringing him out of a commercial slump. However, barely a year later, the Hardest Working Man in Show Business was again without a band when Bootsy quit, taking most of the other members with him. SKU: 1014565

Van Halen III
Van Halen: Edward Van Halen (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Gary Cherone (vocals); Michael Anthony (bass, background vocals); Alex Van Halen (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Florian Ammon, Ian Dye, Ed Rogers, Paul Wight (programming). For the third time in their historyVan Halen starts from scratch with a new lead singer. Their latest vocalist is ex-Extreme mouthpiece Gary Cherone, who combines some of David Lee Roth's sass and swagger with Sammy Hagar's rasp. The biggest difference in the new Van Halen is the intellectual bent of Cherone's lyrics, which address everything from exercising your right to vote ("Ballot Or The Bullet") to the two-faced tendencies of politicians ("Fire In The Hole.") The erudite lyrical approach seems to have forced the band towards a more controlled manner of playing that is no longer in line with their balls-to-the-wall excesses of yore. "How Many Say I" doesn't even feature any of Eddie Van Halen's guitar. Instead, Ed provides piano accompaniment straight out of a sweeping John Tesh epic. That's not to say that Eddie Van Halen is ready to give up his guitar-hero mantle anytime soon, but rather that his palette has broadened. His usual combination of melodic flow and dexterous fretwork is all over "Without You," while "Neworld" and "Primary" continue in the experimental vein of instrumentals that the band has occasionally explored in the past. Little Creatures
Talking Heads: David Byrne (guitar, vocals); Jerry Harrison (keyboards, guitar, background vocals); Tina Weymouth (bass, background vocals); Chris Frantz (drums). Additional personnel: Eric Weissberg (steel guitar); Jimmy Macdonell (accordion); Lenny Pickett (saxophone); Andrew "El Pantalones" Cader (washboard); Steve Scales, Nana Vasconcelos (percussion); Ellen Bernfeld, Erin Dickens, Diva Gray, Gordon Grody, Lani Groves, Kurt Yahijian (background vocals). Recorded at Sigma Sound, New York, New York. After the abstract funk experimentation of REMAIN IN LIGHT and SPEAKING IN TONGUES, the Heads decided to return to their roots with LITTLE CREATURES. They abandoned the modal, polyrhythmic approach in favor of the two-guitars/4/4 pop structures of yore. While LITTLE CREATURES is the band's most accessible, radio-friendlyalbum, it's not a step backwards by any means, because as they return to the quirky "new wave" style that made them famous, they bring a well-earned sophistication (both harmonic and lyrical) to the table. These advances allow the band to knock out a crop of winners, like the anti-anthem "Road To Nowhere," the semi-mystical (but still damn catchy) "And She Was" and the we've-got-a-baby-now, let's-party-with-him rocker "Stay Up Late." Nothing here is as groundbreaking as BUILDINGS AND FOOD, but it's still the Talking Heads, full of idiosyncratic charm and smart-but-infectious tunes. SKU: 5048532

American Pie I
Not unlike the horse's head in THE GODFATHER, we are left with little choicebut to allow the pastry scene in AMERICAN PIE to take its place among infamous moments in American cinematic history. That said, the soundtrack for AMERICAN PIE is a who's who of the day's hottest alternative and pop-punk rock bands. The soundtracks to popular movies like AMERICAN PIE are very often ideal vehicles for new acts to gain mass exposure; and the debut here by Super TransAtlantic (featuring Pat Badger, formerly of Extreme) could prove a precursor for things to come. The Atomic Fireballs bring their zany Bosstones-meets-swing madness to the fold with "Man With the Hex." Radio darlings Third Eye Blind mark another notch in their belt of singable jems with "New Girl." Tonic's "You Wanted More" is sweet as sugar, while the Green Day of the late-'90s, Blink 182, explore the awkwardness of teen sexuality in "Mutt." Having come a long way from its days of questioning the gender of a higher power, Dishwalla offer the new track "Find Your Way Home." With a consistent collection of modern music, AMERICAN PIE takes the cake. SKU: 1033130

On Land (Ambient 4) [Digipak]
Personnel: Brian Eno (various instruments); Michael Brook, Axel Gros (guitar); Jon Hassell (trumpet); Michael Beinhorn (synthesizer); Bill Laswell (bass guitar). Engineers: Jon Potoker; Danny Lanois; Martin Bisi. Liner Note Author: Brian Eno. Recording information: 09/1978 - 01/1982. Unlike most of Brian Eno's conceptually unified ambient projects, AMBIENT 4: ON LAND is something of a patchwork. Recorded in six studios between 1978 and 1982, the eight pieces--ranging between three to nine minutes in length--are a curious mixture of solo works for treated instruments and full-fledged collaborations. "Lizard Point" is the most interesting, with the synthesizer, bass, and guitar of Material's Michael Beinhorn, Bill Laswell, and Axel Gros providing a denser and more varied musical backing than most of Eno's ambient works. "Shadow," a duet with trumpeter Jon Hassell, introduces a world music element similar to their FOURTH WORLD ONE: POSSIBLE MUSICS duet album, and "Dunwich Beach, Autumn 1960" introduces guitaristMichael Brook and multi-instrumentalist/co-producer Daniel Lanois, who became one of Eno's most valuable collaborators throughout the '80s. The solo pieces refine ideas first explored on earlier ambient works, though with greater subtlety and increased tonal color. SKU: 6573281

Bob Dylan At Budokan
Personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Helena Springs, Jo Ann Harris, Debi Dye (vocals); Steven Soles (acoustic guitar, vocals); Billy Cross (guitar); David Mansfield (pedal steel, violin, mandolin, guitar, dobro); Steve Douglas (saxophone, flute, recorder); Alan Pasqua (keyboards); Rob Stoner (bass, vocals); Ian Wallace (drums); Bobbye Hall (percussion). Engineers: Tom Suzuki, Teppei Kasai, Tetsuro Tomita, G.H. Sukegawa. Recorded at Nippon Budokan, Tokyo, Japan on February 28 and March 1, 1978. Includes liner notes by Bob Dylan. This live double album, recorded in Tokyo in 1978, is practically a best-of in disguise. Dylan focuses on the older material in his repertoire, reaching back to the '60s for such tunes as "Blowin' In The Wind," "All I Really Want To Do" and "The Times They Are A-Changin'." Wisely, he also includes a couple of songs from his finest '70s album, BLOOD ON THE TRACKS. These tunes, "Shelter From The Storm" and "Simple Twist of Fate," differ radically from the original recorded versions, as has always been Dylan's wont in a performance situation. One thing that differentiates BUDOKAN from Dylan's other live albums, is the approach toward arrangements. Both earlier and later concert recordings present Dylan as the leader ofa ragtag gang that blazes its way through the tunes in a spontaneous manner. Here, backed by studio vets like Ian Wallace, Alan Pasqua and Steven Soles as well as a three-woman choir, Dylan takes a much more thought-out, even "professional-sounding" approach, to the extent that this could almost pass for a studio re-recording of some of his finest compositions. Evita
Full title: Evita: The Complete Motion Picture Soundtrack. Principal cast includes: Madonna, Antonio Banderas, Jonathan Pryce, Jimmy Nail. Producers: Nigel Wright, Alan Parker, Andrew Lloyd Webber, David Caddick. Recorded at CTS Studios, Whitfield Street Studios, Metropolis Studios, EMI Abbey Road Studios and Olympic Recording Studios, London, England. Middle-class girl, can act a bit, moves to the big city, climbsup the ladder and over a few men, sets her sights on nothing less than worldwide fame, does anything and everything to make that happen, and makes sure everyone in her life works toward the same goal. EVITA is, of course, the autobiography of Madonna. Or, at the very least, the story of Argentina's controversial populist hero Eva Peron is the role of Madonna's life. Say what you want about how well she acts it, but this lush pop-rock soundtrack is hard digital proof that she was born to sing it. Completely giving herself over to the role--the one thing her critics doubted she could ever do--Madonna turns in a vocal performance that may well surpass that on any of her own records. Madonna also, not surprisingly, dominates this soundtrack. She sings some parts, including the sad ballad "Another Suitcase In Another Hall," that weren't written for the role of Eva Peron; and Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, who won a slew of Tony Awards for the 1979 Broadway version of "Evita," have given her a new ballad, "You Must Love Me," that works equally well as an anthem for either Madonna or Peron. Actor Antonio Banderas, following up his small singing role in the movie "Desperado," proves a more-than-capable Che Guevara. SKU: 1001554

Songs Of Leonard Cohen
Leonard Cohen's debut album encapsulated the performer's artistry. A successful poet and novelist, he came to music through the folk idiom, and this set combines the aural simplicity and visual clarity of these two passions. Cohen's lugubrious voice brought an intensity to a haunting collection bound together by beautiful melodies and deeply personal lyrics. Members of contemporary group Kaleidoscope join producer John Simon in creating a delicate backdrop for some memorable love songs.Cohen's ability to be both intimate and universal is a rare gift and results in a body of work that is both timeless and enthralling, albeit a bit sombre. Dixie Chicken
Little Feat: Lowell George (vocals, guitar, cowbell); Paul Barrere (vocals, guitar); Bill Payne (keyboards, vocals, synthesizer); Kenny Gradney (bass); Richard Hayward (drums, vocals); Sam Clayton (congas). Additional personnel: Fred Tackett (acoustic guitar); Malcolm Cecil (synthesizer); Milt Holland (tablas); Trett Fure, Debbie Lindsey, Gloria Jones, Dan Hutton, StephanieSpurville, Bonnie Bramlett, Bonnie Raitt (background vocals). DIXIE CHICKEN is the first album by the most enduring Little Feat line-up: Kenny Gradney replaced departed bassist Roy Estrada, and New Orleans musicians Sam Clayton and Paul Barrere rounded out the new group. This line-up endured periodic break-ups and reunions until the death of Lowell George in 1979. The great Neon Parks album paintings were anticipated almost as much as the next collection from Little Feat, the band with which his work became inextricably linked. This album found them at a musical peak as a stellar 70s rock band who had oodles of swamp blues and funk, with a loose shambling style that came with confidence not sloppiness. Lowell George was singing better than ever on this collection, notably with the sublime "Roll Um Easy" where his voice was chillingly expressive. Bill Payne and Richie Haywood play their respective keyboard and drums with calm and precision. There are no weak tracks here, and this is another vital album, in keeping with all recordings with which George was involved. SKU: 1006767
