Complete Gerry Mulligan & Ben Webster Sessions, The [Remastered]
Full title: The Complete Gerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster Sessions. Personnel: Gerry Mulligan (baritone saxophone); Ben Webster (tenor saxophone); Jimmie Rowles (piano); Leroy Vinnegar (bass); Mel Lewis (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of the Verve Master Editions series. Although baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan was briefly typecast as an "heretical modernist" by jazz purists (his piano-less quartet with Chet Baker in 1952 was considered radical), he was really just extending the tradition of swing-era sax giants like Lester Young and his idol, Ben Webster. This laid back, intergenerational summit, recorded in late 1959, grew out of informal Sunday jam sessions Mulligan and Webster had been having at Mulligan's house in L.A. The vibe here is definitely "cool," West Coast-style, with each track soaked in quiet, luminous intensity. Along with the uncluttered accompaniment of pianist Jimmy Rowles, bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Mel Lewis, the saxophonistsadd breathy life to chestnuts like "Chelsea Bridge" and "What Is This Thing Called Love," while Mulligan originals like "The Cat Walk" show off Webster's sly bluesiness. The two-CD set contains all of the original masters, plus six full-length alternate takes and nine extra tracks of breakdowns, rehearsals and studio discussions, providing listeners with an intimate peak into the creative process of these two renowned geniuses. Live On Earth
Personnel includes: Krishna Das (vocals, ektar, harmonium); Hans Christian (cello, bass); Steve Gorn (bansuri flute); John McDowell (keyboards, djembe, shaker, percussion); Jim Donovan (drums, shaker); Bhima Karma Olrech (khol, cymbals); Girish Gambhira (tabla); Nina Rao (cymbals);Dagger-Ji (shaker); Kirtan Posse (background vocals). Recorded at Mr. Small's Funhouse, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Includes liner notes by Krishna Das. Although Krishna Das has proved to be an accomplished studio musician on albums such as PILGRIM HEART and BREATH OF THE HEART, the double-disc LIVE ON EARTH returns him to his more natural setting, in a room surrounded by the call-and-response fervor of the Kosmic Kirtan Posse. "Radhe Shyam" was originally heard by Das in 1971, when he lived in Brindavan, India and awoke daily to the strains of a blind sadhu chanting en route to the temple. The 12-minute "Samadhi Sita Ram" and "Rama Bolo (Say the Name of God)" both start slowly and mournfully before the room wells over in religious passion. SKU: 6503565

Cover Magazine
Giant Sand includes: Howe Gelb (vocals, guitar, harp, piano, bass); Mike Grimes (acoustic & electric basses); John Convertino (drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: PJ Harvey (vocals); John Rauhause (pedal steel guitar); Noah Thomas (trumpet); Ari Posner (congas). Producers include: Howe Gelb, Craig Schumacher, Harland Arelund. Engineers include: Craig Schumacher, Terje Hellem, Ostein Halvorsen. Principally recorded at Wavelab, Tucson, Arizona and Brussells Radio Studio, Brussels, Belgium. There's no denying that Giant Sand visionary Howe Gelb is an oddduck. Since the mid-'80s his artfully skewed desert rock has occupied a respected, shadowy place in the alt-rock pantheon. With this collection of cover tunes, Gelb lays claim to a larger legacy, encompassing a wide range of American music as filtered through post-war pop culture's funhouse mirror (not to mention the carefully crafted bending and shaping on Gelb's part). He sings the Marty Robbins cowboy classic "El Paso" in a crazed hobo's whisper, and makes the X tune "Johnny Hit and Run Pauline" sound like an acoustic Suicide number with the considerable aid of Polly Jean Harvey. A twisted take on the Sonny & Cher hit "The Beat Goes On" sounds like the sort of thing you might expect to hear from a lounge band in the depths of Hades. A dust-coated medley of the traditional tune "Wayfaring Stranger" and the Sinatra classic "Fly Me to the Moon" continue the distinctly American theme, effectively mixing outsider and high-living themes for maximum tension. One of the only non-U.S. tunes on offer is Nick Cave's "Red Right Hand," but its author is obsessed enough with Americana for an exception to be made. Take a walk through the dark underbelly of American musical history with COVER MAGAZINE, and you'll probably wind up somewhere unexpected but undeniably interesting. SKU: 1070023

Art Of The Trio Vol.5, The (Progression)
Personnel: Brad Mehldau (piano); Larry Grenadier (bass); Jorge Rossy (drums). Recorded at Village Vanguard, New York, New York on September 22-24, 2000. Includes liner notes by Brad Mehldau. On this, Brad Mehldau's fifth installment of trio records, he returns to his jazzier roots by playing a series of standard tunes including "Long Ago and Far Away," "Alone Together," and "How Long Has This Been Going On." Recorded live at the Village Vanguard, this two-disc set offers listeners 13 chances to hear this band's cerebral swing. The opening track, the MackGordon/Harry Warren tune, "The More I See You" shows off Mehldau's improvisational skill as he whips around the keyboard, playing flurries of notes. Other songs such as "Cry Me A River" bring out Mehldau's experimental edge, as he employs a series of soft yet sharp accents on the piano. Sometimes lyrical, sometimes percussive, Mehldau playing runs the gamut from familiar jazz stylings to eccentric, free-floating detours. Only true fans only will spend the time to read Mehldau's liner notes though. A dry, lengthy discourse on music and mankind--squeezed into a nine-point font--gives the feeling that Mehldau is digging in a little deeper than may be necessary. SKU: 1067362

God And The FBI
Personnel: Janis Ian (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, banjo, keyboards, acoustic bass, background vocals); Marc Moreau (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, keyboards, electric bass, drums, programming); Willie Nelson, John Cowan (vocals); Philip Clark (acoustic & electric guitars, drums, background vocals); Jim Cregan (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); Chet Atkins (guitar); Matt Rollings (piano); Willie Weeks (bass); Steve Gadd (drums); Davis Liker (loops). Producers: Jim Cregan, Janie Ian, Marc Moreau. Ian's albums of the '90s got less and less spare as the decade progressed, and this one--her first of the new millennium--continues the trend; it actually sounds like somebody produced it with an ear to radio play. In any case, it's also one of her best efforts, full of lyrically sharp songs and interesting arrangments. Highlights include the title song, a wry modern talking blues about McCarthy-era political paranoia; "Play Like a Girl," that rarest of rarities on an Ian album, i.e. an out-and-out rocker; "Memphis," a genuinely poetic tribute to that city done as a duet with Willie Nelson; and "Boots Like Emmylou," a funny pseudo-country song in which Ian dreams of singing like Patsy Cline. Manhattan Research Inc.
Includes a 144-page hard-bound book. MANHATTAN RESEARCH INC. features electronic music, musique concrete experiments, advertising jingles, and soundtracks originally featured in Jim Henson's pre-Muppet films. The electronic sounds generated on this 2-CD set were made by Raymond Scott inventions including the Clavivox, Circle Machine, Bass Line Generator, Rhythm Modulator, Karloff, Bandito The Bongo Artist and Electronium. Personnel includes: Raymond Scott (spoken vocals, various electronic instruments); Dorothy Collins (vocals); Jim Henson (spoken vocals). Recorded between 1953 & 1969. Includes liner notes by Joel Chadabe, Jeff Winner, Karen Falk, Gert-Jan Blom and Irwin Chusid. Includes interviews with Robert Moog, Herb Deutsch, Alan Entenman and Thomas Rhea. In assembling this overview of Scott's oeuvre, this lavish double album writes an important chapter in his life and career, defining his place in electronic music's history. The research that went into this project (in large part by Jeff Winner and Gert-Jan Blom), is lovingly mirrored in the remarkable 144-page full-color hardbound book that houses the two discs. There are rare photos and documents, numerous interviews and essays, and nothing is superfluous. The overall effect of the entire package is to createa portrait of a unique, creatively driven artist. Vrooom Vrooom
King Crimson: Adrian Belew (vocals, guitar); Robert Fripp (guitar, electronics); Trey Gunn (guitar); Tony Levin (bass, Chapman stick); Pat Mastelotto, Bill Bruford (drums. electronic drums, percussion). Recorded live at Metropolitan Theater, Mexico City, Mexico and Longacre Theater, New York, New York on August 2-4, 1996 and November 20-25, 1995. Includes liner notes by Robert Fripp and Trey Gunn. From the mid-'90s on, a steady stream of archival live King Crimson recordings began to appear, released by Crimson guitarist/leader Robert Fripp as the backbone of his independent cottage industry. This thicket of albums can be an intimidating proposition for the uninitiated, even though each one bears its own distinctive charms. For historical context, let's note that VROOOM VROOOM's two discs feature material from two separate stints in 1995 and '96 during which the band was exploring the "double quartet" concept. This format added second drummer Pat Mastelotto and "touch guitar" player (its nearest relative being Tony Levin's Chapman Stick) to the four-man lineup that led Crimson's '80s return to action. While the necessity of these additions is sometimes questionable and/or inaudible, all members hold their own in the complex, gamelan-influenced latticework that the '80s Crimson inaugurated. The set lists are largely split between contemporary offerings and highlights from the band's three '80s albums, with impressive energy going into every performance. Some special, unexpected moments occur when the group launches into a chestnut like "Red" or "Larks' Tongues inAspic" from the very different '70s version of Crimson, with surprising and exciting results. Livin' For You
Personnel: Al Green (vocals); Tennie Hodges (guitar); Andrew Love, Ed Logan (tenor saxophone); James Mitchell (baritone saxophone); Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Jack Hale (trombone); Charles Hodges (piano, organ); Archie Turner, Michael Allen, James Brown (piano); Leroy Hodges (bass); Howard Grimes (drums, congas, bongos); Al Jackson (drums); The Memphis Strings. Recorded at Royal Recording Studios, Memphis, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Bill Dahl. Digitally remastered by Phil Brown (Digiprep). Recorded at the peak of his secular career, 1973's LIVIN' FOR YOU was Al Green's sixth album for Memphis' Hi Records. Green had moved to Hi in the late 1960s, and the label's excellent house band featured three Hodges brothers, Teenie, Leroy and Charles--on guitar, organ and bass, respectively. With this potent band and veteran producer Willie Mitchell on board, LIVIN' FOR YOU shows off a well-disciplined hit machine. Mitchell is often credited with mellowing Green's vocal delivery during this period, and with a few exceptions, LIVIN' FOR YOU is one of Green's more easy-going recordings. In 1973 the up tempo title track hit #1 on the R&B charts, while the spirited hit "Let's Get Married" landed at #3 on the R&B charts the next year--around the same time LIVIN' FOR YOU went gold. Besides the two better-known Green songs, there is astirring version of "My God is Real," which harks back to his days as a singer of spirituals--a genre he would return to in the next decade. Pack Up The Plantation
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Tom Petty (vocals, acoustic, electric, 6- & 12-string guitars); Mike Campbell (electric, 12-string, lap steel & slide guitars); Howie Epstein (mandolin, bass, background vocals); Benmont Tench (keyboards, background vocals); Stan Lynch (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Stevie Nicks (vocals); Bobby Valentino (violin); Jimmy Zavala (harmonica, saxophone); Lee Thornburg (trumpet, flugelhorn); Nick Lane (trombone, euphonium); Ron Blair (bass); Pat Peterson, Carroll Sue Hill (percussion, background vocals); Phil Jones (percussion). Recorded live at various locations during Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' 1985 tour. Captured in concert in their mid-'80s "eclectic" phase, backed by horns and female vocalists, Petty and the Heartbreakers get to show more sides of their personality than the confines of a studio recording generally permit. That's most obvious in the preponderance of spirited cover tunes that lay the band's roots squarely on their collective sleeve. Listening to their version of the Byrds' "So You Want to be a Rock 'n' Roll Star" makes it plain where Petty got his drawling vocal style and penchant for ringing guitars, just as a rendition of "Shout" lays bare the band's soul influences. Atmospheric jamming vehicles like "Breakdown" also benefit greatly from the live circumstances, and on early tunes like"American Girl," Petty and company prove that they can still blaze through a heartland rocker like no one else. Fossil Fuel (The XTC Singles Collection 1977-1992)
This two-disc set delivers exactly what is promised in its parenthetical subtitle. The collection updates XTC's previous singles set, WAXWORKS, with an additional ten year's worth of selections blasted out towards the hit parade. That all of these didn't make a climb to anywhere near the top of the charts is no reflection on their quality--on the contrary, few bands have ever offered this breadth of sterling songs. From the bristly energy in their earliest sides ("Science Friction," "Statue Of Liberty, "This Is Pop,"), to mid-period streamlined powerhouses ("Generals And Majors," "Towers Of London," "Senses Working Overtime") to stunning, mature confidence ("Grass," "All You Pretty Girls," "The Disappointed,"). The singles stopped in 1992 because theband entered a period of public inactivity, embroiled in legal disputes with their then-label. That silence was finally broken in 1999, so look for a further chapter of singles to be added in another decade. FOSSIL FUEL makes a completely convincing case for the continuing importance of a rare and superb band. SKU: 4123845

Rand
With his parallel pasts in commercial graphic design and in the underground avant-pop group Ag Geige, Frank Bretschneider is a true musician for the digital age. The co-founder of Chemnitz, Germany's acclaimed Rastermusic label, Bretschneider is also an active participant in the Rastermusic roster, where he is represented as Komet, Produkt, and as a member of the collaborative Signal project. Sound and digital design meet in the intoxicating pixel music of RAND. Bretschneider patterns twinkling synthetic tones, electronic noises, and fragmentary microscopic beats with a melodically inclined ear and a sense for spatial composition. The 20 monosyllabic miniatures on RAND range from sparse and provocative chromatic spatters ("Pond," "Land") to exciting juxtapositions of frequency and texture ("Nox," "Term," "Watt") or rhythm and timbre ("Mai," "Mol," "Verb," "Mark"). Bretschneider is less a musical minimalist than a student of economical aesthetics. Each piece employs just enough structural substance to crystallize its fragile form. Taken as a whole, RAND is like a gallery display of modern artwork--a presentation ofchallenging ideas that dazzles the eye and delights the mind. SKU: 1043917

Extras
A collection of B-sides, alternate or demo versions, and previously unreleasedsongs. Producers: Vic Coppersmith-Heaven, Peter Wilson, The Jam, Tony Taverner. Recorded between 1978 and 1992. Includes liner notes by Paolo Hewitt. Pity the oft-neglected B-side. Often just a throwaway track designed to back up but not supersede a band's "official" new release, by the time the single is filed away alphabetically, it's usually forgotten by even the most zealous collector. Unless of course the B-side is by seminal English mod revivalists The Jam, in which case a closer listen is not only warranted, but required. For The Jam packed their B-side songs with more fire and brimstone than most bands did the A-sides. Unfortunately the vinyl days of yore are but a memory. Fortunately, EXTRAS collects most of the Jam's odds and sods on disc for fans young and old. A bonus is Paul Weller's always-eclectic taste in covers, which runs from the Who ("So Sad About Us") to the Beatles ("And Your Bird Can Sing") to the godfather of soul himself , Mr. James Brown ("I Got You [I Feel Good]"). EXTRAS is valuable not only as a chronology of the gems that Weller was tossing off in his spare time, but as a look at how truly eclectic the Jam were as a band. SKU: 1011766

Off The Wall [Remastered]
OFF THE WALL remaster contains previously unreleased demos and commentary by producer Quincy Jones and songwriter Rod Temperton. Personnel includes: Michael Jackson (vocals, percussion); Patti Austin (vocals); David Williams, Marlo Henderson, Phil Upchurch, Wah Wah Watson, Marlo Henderson, Larry Carlton (guitar); Larry Williams (flute, alto & tenor saxophones); Kim Hutchcroft (flute, tenor & baritone saxophones); Jerry Hey (trumpet, flugelhorn); Gary Grant (trumpet); William Reichenbach (trombone); Greg Phillinganes (electric piano, synthesizer); David "Hawk" Wolinski (electric piano); Michael Boddiker (synthesizer, programming); George Duke, David Foster (synthesizer); Louis Johnson (bass); John Robinson (drums, percussion); Randy Jackson, Janet Jackson, Richard Heath, Paulinho Da Costa (percussion). Producers: Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson. Reissue producer: Bruce Swedien. Recorded in Los Angeles, California between 1978 & 1979. Originally released on Epic (35745). Digitally remastered by Bernie Grundman (Bernie Grundman Mastering, Los Angeles, California). As the lead singer of the Jackson 5, Michael Jackson had already been labeled a legend at a young age; but OFF THE WALL introduced the world to the adult Michael Jackson, and proved that he was still very much worthyof that label. It was the real beginning for Michael as a solo artist, and opened the doors for his next album THRILLER, which would become the greatest selling album of all time and help foist upon a Jackson a new title: King Of Pop. Under the supervision of Quincy Jones, OFF THE WALL illustrated some of Jackson's most soulful material. The title-track is among the album's smoothest, and introduces his silky feel for the dance-floor. The lively "Working Day And Night" was a teaser for the singles "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock With You," both of which reached #1 on the pop charts. Slowing down the pace, the album also hosted some romantic tunes which, through the years, have become classics in their own right. With "Girlfriend" and "She's Out Of My Life," Michael proved that he never lost his golden touch when it came to love songs. SKU: 1067369

Chet Baker Sings
Personnel: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet); Russ Freeman (piano, celeste); James Bond, Carson Smith (bass); Peter Littman, Lawrence Marable, Bob Neel (drums). Recorded at the Forum Theatre, Los Angeles, California on July 23 & 30, 1956; Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California on February 15, 1954. Includes liner notes by Richard Brock and Gerlad Heard. Chet Baker made his musical debut in 1952 as an integral member of Gerry Mulligan's modernist piano-less quartet, by all accounts marking the beginning of the post-bop West Coast style. So it came as quite a shock when Baker made his singing debut on this seminal 1954 release, he sounded less like a member of the cool school than a boy crooner straight out of the '40s! Actually, left to his own non-Mulligan devices,Chet Baker the instrumentalist was not an innovator in the post-bebop mode. What his sideline singing did reveal were his songful roots in the swing of Harry James and other formative influences. Still, the bland innocence of Chet Baker's All-American vocals can make for an eerily "cool" listening experience in this context. And an authentically satisfying one, as his definitive version of "My Funny Valentine" should make clear. Throughout, pianist Russ Freeman's warm, solid touch provides the perfect foil for Baker's affectless Romanticism. SKU: 1001094

Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots
The Flaming Lips: Wayne Coyne (vocals, guitar); Michael Ivins (guitar, bass, background vocals); Steve Drozd (guitar, drums, background vocals). Producers: The Flaming Lips, Dave Fridmann, Scott Booker. Recorded at Tarbox Road Studios, Cassadaga, New York between June 2000 & April 2001. "Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon (Utopia Planitia)" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Emerging sometime in the '80s, Oklahoma boys The Flaming Lips have held steady to a peripheral, but significant location in the indie-rock world, visionaries blessed with a hyper-keen pop sensibility. In 1999, four years removed from the surprise alterna-pop hit "She Don't Use Jelly," the trio fronted by the fetching, impelling whisper of Wayne Coyne hit a remarkably high note, making scores of year-end 'best of' lists with THE SOFT BULLETIN, a mellifluous, masterful slice of Brian Wilson-level pop distorted through a few looking glasses. Following an acclaimed album is always a craggy cliff of anticipation, but if BULLETIN was the Flaming Lips' PETSOUNDS, then the ethereal YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS may be their SMILEY SMILE, a record which skillfully straddles the line between pop and experimentation. YOSHIMI offers lush, enveloping arrangements, forging a soundscape both comfortably predictable and satisfyingly, even dizzyingly, diverse, awash in Todd Rundgren-like grandiosity, yet startlingly simple in structure like the better work of Paul McCartney. Despite having the air of a quasi-concept album, YOSHIMI betrays little pretension, even in the face of the Lips' trademark deceptively complex lyrics. The exceptional YOSHIMI easily cements the Flaming Lips' place in the vanguard of the rock world. SKU: 1073016
