Goldfinger [Remastered]
Original score composed by and conducted John Barry. Recorded at CTS Studios, London, England in July 1964. Includes liner notes by Jeff Bond. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Shirley Bassey's "Goldfinger" wasn't the biggest hit from the James Bond movies, but it remains the archetype. With Bassey's bold, blaring delivery of Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley's over-the-top lyrics, her voice as brassy as the unforgettable horn fills that punctuate the verses, "Goldfinger Into Miami (Main Title)" (as the song is more prosaically identified here) is a true swinging-'60s pop treasure. Though the rest of the album isn't John Barry's all-time best James Bond score--that would be 1965's thrilling THUNDERBALL--it's certainly top-drawer work. Tracks like "Oddjob's Pressing Engagement" and the subtle "Gassingthe Gangsters" rework the main theme in imaginative ways, and the climactic "Dawn Raid On Fort Knox" is effectively tense even without the visuals. The brief "Teasing the Korean" is a similarly impressive exercise in atmospherics, proving anew that John Barry was one of the most gifted soundtrack composers of the '60s. SKU: 1081852

Naked
Talking Heads: David Byrne (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Jerry Harrison (guitar, keyboards, percussion, background vocals); Tina Weymouth (keyboards, bass, background vocals); Chris Frantz (keyboards, drums). Additional personnel: Alex Haas (whistling); Yves N'Djock, Johnny Marr (guitar); Eric Weissberg (pedal steel guitar, dobro); Arthur Russell (cello); Phil Bodner (cor anglais); Don Brooks (harmonica); Philippe Servain, James Fearnley (accordion); Steve Elfon (soprano & baritone saxophones); Stan Harrison, Bobby Porcelli (alto saxophone); Al Acosta (tenor saxophone); Steve Sachs (baritone saxophone); Lenny Pickett (saxophone); Earl Gardner, Laurie Frink, Steve Gluzband, Jose "Ite" Jerez, Angel Fernandez, Charlie Sepulveda (trumpet); Robyn Eubanks (trombone); Dale Turk (bass trombone); Wally Badarou (keyboards); Abdou M'Boup (talking drums, congas, percussion); Sydney Thiam (congas); Manolo Badrena (congas, percussion); Brice Wassy (maracas, percussion); Nino Gioia, Moussa Cissokoa (percussion); Kirsty MacColl (background vocals). Coming at the end of the Talking Heads' discography, NAKED finds the Heads returning to many elements of the complex, polyrhythmic arrangements that marked their work earlier in the decade, prior to the rootsier LITTLE CREATURES. Reflecting a more European influence, NAKED was recorded in Paris and produced by Steve Lillywhite, who brings to bear his gift for making sprawling arrangements sound remarkably down-to-earth and radio-friendly (see U2). The album's truly special guest is former Smith Johnny Marr, who lends his imaginative fretboard work and timeless pop sensibility to tunes such as "Nothing but Flowers," and "Cool Water." Other standouts include "Blind," a bombastic groove that foreshadows Byrne's soon-to-follow solo work. Sparse, spastic, and filled with intellectual social rage, NAKED is at once a return to form and a fitting sendoff for one of music's relentlessly original and truly importantforces. SKU: 5048534

Recorded in 1973, this is the Arkestra at their most communally inventive and daring. The four selections (the original release had just three) are all cued improvisations. The set is enhanced with the addition of a rare session, previously thought to be lost, and never before released in any manner. Titled, FRIENDLY LOVE, it also is divided into four parts in which the ten-piece ensemble follows the directions of their leader, giving us yet another glimpse into the musical mind of Sun Ra. Core
Stone Temple Pilots: Weiland (vocals); Dean DeLeo (guitar); Robert DeLeo (bass); Eric Kretz (drums). Recorded at Rumbo Recorders, Los Angeles. "Plush" won the 1994 Grammy Award for "Best Hard Rock Performance With Vocal." The group that put San Diego on the musical map, Stone Temple Pilots released their debut album with no fanfare, and caught the public's eye only after touring for a year. CORE's sound--relentlessly pounding guitars, a heavy bottom and a singer whose vocal style bled with some unseen pain--played perfectly into the swell of grunge that had been building up in the mainstream for two years before its release. Topically, CORE went beyond the the usual sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll fare associated with hard rock. The drill instructor intro that singer Weiland chants off at the beginning of "Dead & Bloated" is a disgusted swipe at the rivers of apathy coursing through America. The enigmatic singer often donned a dress on stage to drive home the point of the anti-rape song "Sex Type Thing." Guitarist Dean DeLeo's playing grinds and swirls, pulling the listener to and fro on a crunchy carpet of distortion. Brother Robert's bass rumbles and pops thunderously, as drummer Eric Kretz matches him with unbridled ferocity. STP click spectacularly on the consecutive tandem of "Sin" and "Naked Sunday," taking onthe political hot-button of religion. "Sin" addresses the danger of blind piety that leaves no room for compassion, while "Naked Sunday" deals with the quest for God and the uncertainty of such spiritual pursuits. Pretty heavy stuff for a group that should be more concerned with living the stereotypical rock 'n' roll lifestyle. SKU: 1041819

Cowboy In Sweden
Personnel includes: Lee Hazelwood, Nina Lizell, Suzi Jane Hokom. Includes liner notes by Lee Hazelwood, Nina Lizell and Torbjorn Axelman. Hazelwood is a strange guy. A producer in the '50s and a singer-songwriter in the '60s and '70s, he has fashioned an utterly unique composite by combining cowboy themes, rockabilly, ballads, and richly orchestrated pop with his clever, honest, and sometimes oblique lyrics. In 1970, Hazelwood traveled to Sweden to collaborate with director Tobjorn Axelman. For one of these ventures, Hazelwood wrote and performed the music for the titular television program. His songs, which feature the sweetly naive vocals of Nina Lizell, are presented on this re-issue. Despitethe inclusion of loping cowboy ballads and thick orchestral arrangements, this is psychedelic music of the unlikeliest sort. The songs are often strikingly good, topped with Hazelwood's peculiar, unseasoned baritone. But it's difficult to ignore the feeling that everything--from the countrified spur-jangling lope of "No Train To Stockholm" to the spooky cabaret of "Vem Kan Segla"-has been drenched in irony. The album shifts moods radically. On one hand we find the dark, atmospheric swirl and half-ironic blues narrative of "The Night Before;" on the other is "Hey Cowboy," a garishly bright Broadway-esque duet between Hazelwood and Lizell. It is this very sense of never knowing just how seriously Hazelwood can/should be taken that makes him such an appealing and compelling artist. SKU: 1022774

Jackpot [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracksand multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Chingy, Tity-Boi, Murphy Lee, J/Weav, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, Jermaine Dupri, Trina. Producers: The Trak Starz, Da Quiksta. There's always room for summer jams, and if Nelly's "Hot In Herre" owned the summer of 2002, the jam pouring out the windows, pumping from the cranked-up speakers of the most pimped-out rides in the warmest months of '03 is clearly Chingy's "Right Thurr." Similar to Nelly, Chingy is straight out of St. Louis, possesses a smooth, confident, charming vocal style and spins hypnotic dialect with a blithe humor over insistently catchy beats. Moreover, both rappers' debut albums were phenomena practically out of the box. JACKPOT, Chingy's debut, deserves its attention with an impressive variety of constantly banging tracks. Fellow Southern spirit Ludacris brought Chingy into his Disturbing Tha Peace fold and guests along with Snoop Dogg on the slightly screwed-up "Holidae In." From the spiraling flow and hooky chorus of "Chingy Jackpot" to the unrelenting bass of "Juice" to a bonus remix of the undeniable "Right Thurr," Chingy never loses his focus. More than just mere support to the smash single, JACKPOT features a remarkably consistent collection of danceably appealing tracks and ensures the young rap lion a slew of singles. SKU: 1088296

All About Chemistry
Semisonic: Dan Wilson (vocals, guitar); John Munson (trombone, bass); Jacob Slichter (drums). Additional personnel includes: Carole King (vocals, electric piano): Matt Wilson (vocals, synthesizer); Shane Washington (French horn); Ken Chastain (congas, tabla). Principally recorded at Seedy Underbelly, Drumhammer, and Subjersey Studios, Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1998, Semisonic scored with the hit "Closing Time," a melancholy anthem for anyone who's ever endedup alone with their ego smashed on the rocks at the end of the night after riding a wave of romantic expectations. For 2001's ALL ABOUT CHEMISTRY, this Minneapolis trio emerges from the studio with a recorded dissertation on the complexities of relationships. Loaded with hooks and harmonies, Semisonic wastes no time delving into romance's dark corners, tackling the fears of unrequited love (the yearning "I Wish"), flying solo (the driving "Get a Grip") and the need to pretend all is well (a poignant and delicately wrought "Act Naturally"). Between frontman Dan Wilson's warm delivery and his band's inherent earnestness, the threat of this outing becoming a gloomfest is kept at bay thanks to optimistic numbers like the Crowded House-flavored "Follow" and the Beatles-esque bomp of "Who's Stopping You?" Semisonic's finest moments are with the punning title track, in which love is an experiment conducted in the lab of life, and the pop-perfect "One True Love," a piano-driven duet with legendary singer-songwriter Carole King. Engineer includes: John Harris, Guy Charbonneau, Steve Smith. Includes liner notes by Garth Brooks. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Making a live Garth Brooks album is like trying to catch lightning in a bottle. His concerts--part revival meeting, part love-in, part circus--are spectacles best experienced on a first hand basis. But this comes as close as a mere CD can to presenting the full Garth experience. Wisely, Brooks has chosen to make the audience the star on many tracks. Hearing thousands of fans singing along to "Unanswered Prayers" and "The Dance" is a goosebump-inducing experience. Songs like "Shameless," "The Beaches of Cheyenne" and "That Summer," all fine in their studio versions, take on a new vibrancy live. But it's the upbeat songs that really shine. As Brooks and his crack band tear through rave-ups like "Ain't Goin' Down" and "The Fever," his voice takes on an edge of maniacal glee that drives the audience--and him--into a frenzy. And if the prospect of a live Garth souvenir isn't enough, Brooks has thrown in three new songs, including a duet with Trisha Yearwood ("Wild As the Wind"). The CD is also availablein at least seven collectable versions, each with a different cover. Garth devotees can't go wrong with DOUBLE LIVE, and casual fans will welcome having all his hits in one handy package. SKU: 4125632

Seventh Sojourn
The Moody Blues: Mike Pinder, Justin Hayward, Ray Thomas, John Lodge, Graeme Edge. Recorded at Tollington Park Studios, London, England. Originally released on Threshold (7). Includes liner notes by John Reed. Digitally remastered by Steve Fallone (Polygram Studios). While the Moodies were never exactly a rocker's delight, SEVENTH SOJOURN, the seventh recording with the post-Denny Laine lineup, is perhaps their most ballad-heavy album. Ironically, the album's biggest hit, which would become one of the group's signature songs, was the uncharacteristically uptempo "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band." Elsewhere, appearances are equally deceiving; interpersonal tensions had developed in the band to the point where there wouldn't be another Moody Blues album for six years, but the album is full of slow, romantic musings, not signsof strife. As usual, it's Justin Hayward, he of the silky voice and heart-on-a-sleeve lyricism, who excels at all this romantic balladry, his contributions being the most melodic and affecting. John Lodge's aforementioned "I'm Just a Singer" is far and away the most energetic tune, but it closes the album and doesn't disturb the contemplative mood. Ironically, though the band was coming apart, they were also reaching new heights. Keyboardist Mike Pinder had traded in his Mellotron for its more sophisticated cousin, the Chamberlain, which provided an improved overall sound on SEVENTH SOJOURN. SKU: 1000798

Chicago (The Musical)
Principal cast includes: Bebe Neuwirth (Velma Kelly); Ann Reinking (Roxie Hart); Michael Berresse (Fred Casely); Michael Kubala (Sergeant Fogarty); Joel Grey (Amos Hart); Denise Fay (Liz); James Naughton (Billy Flynn). Orchestra includes: Rob Fisher (director); Jay Berliner (banjo); Marilyn Reynolds (violin); Seymour Red Press (woodwinds); John Frosk (trumpet); Dave Bargeron (trombone); Leslie Stifelman (piano); Jeffrey Saver (accordion); Ronald Raffio (bass, tuba); Ronald Zito (drums). Recorded at Hit Factory's Studio 1, New York, New York on November 18, 1996. Includes liner notes by Bill Rosenfield. CHICAGO: THE MUSICAL won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show. CHICAGO, the 1975 masterpiece by John Kander and Fred Ebb, was originally conceived as a musicalby director-choreographer-muse Bob Fosse, with whom they had turned the world on its ear nine years earlier with CABARET. Like CABARET, this Weill-esque vaudeville is presented as a sort of variety show, complete with emcee. It tells the tale of two wily murderesses vying for media attention during the '20s, and as the two ladies in question, Bebe Neuwirth and Ann Reinking give brilliant performances in this 1997 revival. Reinking's nervous energy takes the role of Roxie Hart to a new level. Neuwirth, as Velma Kelly, gets to exercise not only her vocal abilities but her comic skills as well, particularly in the one-woman tour de force, "I Can't Do It Alone." James Naughton is wonderfully glib as an opportunistic lawyer, especially in "Razzle Dazzle" and the Busby Berkeley parody, "All I Care About." The legendary Joel Grey brings humor, pathos, and real depth to the role of Roxie's sad sack husband, Amos. Outstanding numbers include "Cell Block Tango" and "Class," in which Velma and the prison warden (sung by Marcia Lewis) hilariously bemoan the decline of morals and social graces. SKU: 3108959

Gonna Take A Miracle [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Laura Nyro (vocals, piano); Roland Chambers, Norman Harris (guitar); Lenny Pakula (organ); Ronnie Baker (bass); Jim Helmer (drums); Larry Washington, Nydia Mata (bongos, congas). LaBelle: Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx, Sarah Dash (vocals). Recorded in 1971. Bonus tracks recorded live at Fillmore East, New York, New York on May 30, 1971. Includes liner notes by Amy Linden. All tracks have been digitally remastered. For Nyro, a native New Yorker who grew up on the sounds of girl groups and R&B, GONNA TAKE A MIRACLE was a return to her roots. While she made her name as a visionary songwriter on a par with Joni Mitchell or Neil Young, she was also a gifted interpreter of other people's songs. This is where she proved it, covering classic pop and R&B tunes like "Nowhere To Run," "Spanish Harlem" and "You've Really Got a Hold On Me." As she paid tribute to her influences, she was aided by the soulful backing vocals of LaBelle andthe production of Philly soul masterminds Gamble and Huff. SKU: 1073499

Great Depression, The
Personnel includes: DMX, Faith Evans, Stephanie Mills, Mashonda. Producers include: DMX, Damon "Grease" Blackman, Black Key, Kidd Kold, Chad Elliot. Recorded at The Hit Factory Criteria, Miami, Florida and Chaton Studios, Phoenix, Arizona. "Who We Be" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. Judging from his history of multi-platinum albums and successful film appearances, it would make more sense if DMX were happy rather than depressed. But then he might not have the same impact on his fans. THE GREAT DEPRESSION is the fourth installment in the story of DMX's life. Produced by various members of the Ruff Ryders crew, including Swizz Beatz and P.K., X's latest fits the Ruff Ryders formula of hardcore rap music with just enough crossover appeal to go pop. "Right Here," the first single, is a mid-tempo anthem for hip-hop heads to ride along with. And songs like "Trina Moe" showoff DMX's writing skills, often overlooked amid the fury of his performances. Ironically enough, DMX sounds a lot more joyful than usual on THE GREAT DEPRESSION. The rapper is still as gritty as he was on his debut, only now he has a wealth of experience to share not only with his native Yonkers, but with the world at large. SKU: 1067915

Global A Go-go
Even when he was leading the Clash, Joe Strummer always incorporated his interest in disparate musical styles into his work. 20 years down the road, he's achieved enough distance from the Clash to express himself fully and freely, so GLOBAL A GO-GO is Strummer's most stylistically diverse offering to date. The album opens with the American folk motifs of "Johnny Appleseed" before moving on to the churning, funky "Cool 'N' Out." The title tune combines hypnotic trip-hop keyboards, reggae guitar, and percolating percussion to celebrate the joys of international communication. "Bhindi Bhagee" successfully combines electronica beats with Eastern tonalities. "Gamma Ray" is a surreal Cuban-style slow-burner that recalls the Latin Playboys. "Mondo Bongo" and "Shaktar Donetsk" sound like excerpts from a film noir soundtrack set somewhere in Morocco. The album closes with the epic 17-minutes-plus "Minstrel Boy," a folkish selection filled with atmospheric fiddle and acoustic guitar, nearly all instrumental. It continues the soundtrack-like feeling achieved by the earlier cuts, and leaves the listener flouting on a cloud of hazy Celtic mist. Throughout the album, Strummer evinces his trademark socio-political awareness in the lyrics, but he sounds much less angry than in punk's glory days. Sometimes maturity can work for you.
