Doug Sahm And Friends (The Best Of Doug Sahm's Atlantic Sessions)
Personnel: Doug Sahm (vocals, guitar, fiddle, electric piano, bajo sexto); Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar); Charlie Owens (steel guitar); Frank Paredes, Louis Ortega (guitar, background vocals); David Bromberg (dobro); Ken Kosek (fiddle); Flaco Jimenez (accordion); George Coleman (alto saxophone); Mel Martin (tenor & baritone saxophones); Rocky Morales, Martin Fierro (tenor saxophone); Willie Bridges (baritone saxophone); David "Fathead" Newman (saxophone); Jack Walrath, Charley MacBirney, Wayne Jackson, Jack Wilmoth, Joe Ellis (trumpet); Neal Rosengarden (flugelhorn); Jimmy Knepper (trombone); Barry Goldberg, Augie Meyer, Dr. John (piano, organ); Arif Mardin, Mike Nock, Red Angeli,George Stubbs (electric piano); Warren Chiasson (vibraphone); Jack Barber, Steve Vargas (bass); George Rains (drums); Benny Valarde (congas); Pancho Morales (percussion); Atwood Allen (background vocals). Producers: Jerry Wexler, Arif Mardin, Doug Sahm. Engineers: Jimmy Douglass, Ken Hopkins. Recorded at Atlantic Recording Studios, New York, New York; Wally Heider Recording Studios, San Francisco, California. Includes liner notes by Doug Sahm and Chet Flippo. Digitally remastered by Stephen Innocenzi (Atlantic Studios, New York, New York). In the early '70s, Doug Sahm made two fine albums for Atlantic Records, DOUG SAHM AND BAND and TEXAS TORNADO (later adopted as the name of his collective band in the early '90s). Sahm's broad sweep of rootsy and honest American musics, from Texas blues to big band jazz and country, was a natural fit for producer Jerry Wexler (who produced many of the label's great '60s soul sides). This collection draws from both albums and includes unreleased numbers. Though they immediately sound like standards, these songs are primarily Sahm originals. The players are also notable, including Dr. John, David Bromberg, David "Fathead" Newman, Flaco Jimenez, Augie Meyer, Andy Statman, and even Bob Dylan (who also contributes his "Wallflower" to the set). This is a wonderful companion to THE BEST OF DOUG SAHM & THE SIR DOUGLAS QUINTET, a collection that mostly predates these recordings. As a great introduction to Sahm or as a wonderful overview, ATLANTIC SESSIONS is essential music. SKU: 1052976

Half Smiles Of The Decomposed [Digipak]
Guided By Voices: Chris Slusarenko, Doug Gillard, Robert Pollard, Kevin March, Nate Farley. Additional personnel: Tobin Sprout (guitar); Todd Tobias (sound effects). Recording information: Waterloo Sound, Kent, Ohio (2003). At the time of HALF SMILES OF THE DECOMPOSED's release in 2004, Guided By Voices ringleader Robert Pollard claimed that it would be the long-running indie band's last record. While the album's artwork (particularly the back cover's telltale sunset photo) reinforces the sense of finality, the music here plays to the strengths that GBV has developed since the group's 1994 breakthrough,BEE THOUSAND, offering up quirky lyrics and catchy riffs aplenty. "Everybody Thinks I'm a Raincloud (When I'm Not Looking)" begins the send-off with surging guitars that allow Pollard to slide comfortably into rock-star mode, while "Sleep Over Jack" is an angular, New Wave-esque track that sports vocal samples echoing the muffled interjections on the Beatles' "Yellow Submarine." Although many other latter-day GBV outings focused almost exclusively on amped-up electric guitars, HALF SMILES features more prominent acoustic guitar playing, particularly on the dreamy jangle-pop of "Girls of Wild Strawberries" and the gloriously Who-like "Window of My World." By the time Bob Pollard repeatedly sings the refrain "for far too long" to close the song "Huffman Prairie Flying Field," the album itself, and, apparently, the rock entity known as Guided By Voices, it's clear he's not kidding around about this ending. It's one hell of a swan song. SKU: 6566315

Inside Out
Personnel includes: Trisha Yearwood (vocals); James Lowry (acoustic guitar); Brent Rowan (electric guitar); Steuart Smith (electric slide guitar); The Nashville String Machine (strings); Steve Nathan (keyboards); Michael Rhodes (bass); Shannon Forrest (drums); Eric Darken (percussion); Andrew F. Gold, Kim Richey (background vocals); Rosanne Cash, Don Henley. Recorded at The Sound Kitchen, Ocean Way, BackStage Studio, and Sound Stage Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. INSIDE OUT was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Awardfor Best Country Album. "I Would've Loved You Anyway" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. "Inside Out" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals. While Trisha Yearwood started out as a country diva with a strong connection to Nashville traditions, over the years she's strayed further and further from those country roots. The remarkable thing is that, as exemplified here, she's managed to open her music to other influences without going the Shania Twain lowest-common-denominator route. The arresting opening cut "Love Alone" incorporates hip-hop beats, rock guitar, and Beatles-like string arrangements, and that's all in one song. The title cut, on which Yearwood is joined by Don Henley, bears a distinct R&B undercurrent. Another duet, this time with Rosanne Cash, on Cash's old hit "Seven Year Ache," finds Yearwood paying homage to the progressive country scene from whence she came. For the faithful, there are several cuts that bear enough country feel to keep the singer welcome in Nashville, but ultimately its Yearwood's strong, distinctive voice, not any stylistic monomania, that provides the common thread through this disc. Songs I Heard
Personnel includes: Harry Connick, Jr. (vocals, piano); Branford Marsalis (vocals, soprano saxophone); James Greene, Jon Gordon (alto saxophone); Jerry Welson, Charles "Ned" Good (tenor saxophone); Dave Schumacher (baritone saxophone); Roger Ingram, Tony Kadleck, Leroy Jones, Joe Magnarelli (trumpet); Mark Mullins, Dave Miller, Craig Kelin (trombone); Joe Barati (bass trombone); Neal Caine (bass); Arthur Latin (drums); Lucien Barabarin (percussion) Recorded at Manhattan Center Studios, New York, New York from July 23-26, 2001. Includes liner notes by Geoff Burke. SONGS I HEARD won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Never content to rest on his laurels, Harry Connick, Jr. wrapped up the end of 2001 simultaneously releasingthe mostly solo 30 and the more complexly arranged SONGS I HEARD. The theme for the latter collection of songs can be traced to material heard by Connick as a youth that he decided to pay tribute to and have some fun with a little later in life. Not surprisingly, children's films prove to be an excellent source of material. "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" (from Mary Poppins) becomes an infectious, whiz-bang shuffle that sounds as if a party was going on during the recording session, while "Oompa Loompa" (of WILLY WONKA fame) is given an off-kilter solo turn. The Wizard Of Oz's "Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead" gets a be-bop treatment, and "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" arrives with an ominous timpani-soaked intro before Connick eases it into its lush arrangement. The New Orleans native also has a ball with songs from THE SOUND OF MUSIC, including a gorgeous reading of "Edelweiss," and "Do-Re-Mi" swings hard with accompanists dropping in throughout the song. Floored
Sugar Ray: Mark McGrath (vocals); Rodney Sheppard (guitar); Murphy Karges (bass); Stanton Frazier (drums); DJ Homicide (turntables). Additional personnel includes: Super Cat (vocals). If the Butthole Surfers were from California, they might sound something like West Coast upstarts Sugar Ray. On their major label bow, the band combines hip-hop DJ turntable scratches with combustible guitars, and L.A. freak-funk bass for a grinding, house-a-billy sound. Despite all the friction on FLOORED, though, Sugar Ray aren't afraid to beas sweet as their name implies. "Fly," featuring Super Cat, is a wonderful ballad that gives the band more depth than your typical beer can-smashing, spit-in-your-face funk-rockers. So jab your way through the record store lines and get FLOORED. SKU: 1003081

Matters Of The Heart
Personnel: Tracy Chapman (vocals, acoustic guitar); Bobby Womack (acoustic guitar); Mike Campbell (guitar, mandolin); Waddy Wachtel, Vernon Reid (guitar); Roy Bittan (accordion, keyboards); Charles Judge, Larry Williams (keyboards); Randy Jackson, Tony Levin, Larry Klein, Bob Glaub (bass); Manu Katche, Omar Hakim (drums); Mino Cinelu, Steve Thornton, Michael Fisher, Alex Acuna (percussion). Engineers include: Thom Panunzio, Bradshaw Leigh, Niko Bolaso. Chapman's debut and its quickly produced follow-up CROSSROADS sound very much alike. While not a total departure, 1992's MATTERS OF THE HEART has a much different, richer sound. Subtle elements of world music, blues, and jazz enrich the folk-based starkness of the previous records. Unfortunately, this album was slightly too different for many of Chapman's early fans, and the incorrect received wisdom claims that it's a creative misstep. The more textured arrangements and Jimmy Iovine's slick but not sterile production support Chapman's lyrics without overpowering them, and those lyrics are more mature and personalthan before. The sometimes-empty sloganeering of CROSSROADS is at the barest minimum here, with Chapman instead focusing on character sketches like the thoroughly lovely "I Used to Be a Sailor" and the delicate title track. One of Tracy Chapman's finest. SKU: 5048789

Autoditacker
Mouse On Mars includes: Jan St. Werner, Andi Toma. Mouse on Mars' music does not fit into any of the countless electronic musicsubgenres that have arisen in the late '90s. Mouse on Mars is a subgenre unto itself. Dusseldorf resident Jan St. Werner, who dabbles in other "fracturing electronica" experiments as a member of Microstoria, and Cologne resident Andi Toma manipulate found sounds into loungey electro nuggets resembling some great heretofore-unseen, futuristic pop. AUTODITACKER, their third full length, exhibits a dozen such digital sketches, that are, in the great tradition of Teutonic electronic pop, both booty-shaking and head-nodding. On AUTODITACKER, Mouse On Mars refines its formula: sunset melancholy progressions are the melodic content (this is not a dark, jarring experience), bebop tunes and early reggae dubs serve as compositional blueprints (themes bookend "solos" and other sonic breakdowns), and funky grooves are emphasized over raging beats. The results are organic, high-tech pieces equal parts mystery and science, clarity and hypnosis. Its the kind of instrumental music kids weaned on Eno should always make. SKU: 1005642

Ella Swings Brightly With Nelson
"Call Me Darling," "Somebody Loves Me" and "Cheerful LIttle Earful" are reissue bonus tracks and were not included on the original release of ELLA SWINGS BRIGHTLY WITH NELSON. Personnel includes: Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Ronnie Lang (alto saxophone); Bob Cooper (tenor saxophone); Don Fagerquist (trumpet); Alvin Stoller (drums); The Nelson Riddle Orchestra. Compilation producer: Michael Lang. Principally recorded in 1961-62. Includes liner notes by James Gavin and original release liner notes by BennyGreen. Digitally remastered by Phil Schaap. ELLA SWINGS BRIGHTLY WITH NELSON is the obvious companion piece to ELLA SWINGS GENTLY WITH NELSON, and the two albums are often repackaged together. Recorded in 1961, when Nelson Riddle was possibly the most popular bandleader in America (thanks to his classic string of albums with Frank Sinatra) and Ella Fitzgerald was widely considered the best female jazz singer in the world, this album shows the pair working at their respective peaks. Riddle had an undeniable gift for arrangements, and the perky charts here fit Fitzgerald's bubbly delivery and giddy scat solos like the two had worked together for decades. A saucy "Love Me Or Leave Me" and a flirty "I Won't Dance" are joys, but the deliriously lovely "I Only Have Eyes For You" is an absolute must-own classic. Even the silly answer song "The Gentleman Is A Dope" shines in such company. SKU: 1004039

To Our Children's Children's Children
Also available on cassette with QUESTION OF BALANCE. NOTES: The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward, Mike Pinder, John Lodge, Ray Thomas, Graeme Edge. All tracks have been digitally remastered. The Moodies were a prolific lot in the late '60s. This, the post-Denny Laine lineup's fourth album, was the second to be released in 1969. It was the group's most mature, fully realized effort to date, arguably surpassing even the milestone DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED in its elegance and vision. The Moodies were always capable of both songcraft and experimentalism, but this was the first time they combined them both successfully. Mike Pinder's dramatically arcing mellotron is the perfectly complement to the group's lush vocal harmonies, which are colored by rich acoustic guitartextures. Things open on a mind-bendingly psychedelic note with the electrical storm of "Higher and Higher," but soon the waters calm. Justin Hayward's brief acoustic ballad "I Never Thought I'd Live to be a Hundred" is among the band's loveliest tunes, and it leads into "Beyond," an ambitious instrumental that is the Moodies at their most progressive. Throughout the album, the mixture of winningly melodic balladry, poignant folk-rock and ambitious prog-rock leanings combine for what is one of the Moody Blues' most satisfying albums. SKU: 1003414

Live In London
Recorded liveat Ronnie Scott's, London, England in December 1994. Recorded in 1994 at Ronnie Scott's celebrated club, LIVE IN LONDON showcases Ruth Brown's equal facility with swing-era standards and rockin' blues. The set leans far more toward the former, making this the Brown album for people who prefer her primarily as a jazz singer. Brown is in fine form throughout, backed by an excellent Hammond organ-led small combo. She whoops her way through one of her old hits, the wonderfully lewd "5-10-15 Hours" (an R&B song, Brown remarks, from 1953, "when R&B meant Ruth Brown"). The set also features Brown's re-imagining of older songs, such as Billie Holiday's "Fine and Mellow." SKU: 4126601

Lost Blues And Other Songs
LOST BLUES & OTHER SONGS is a collection of B-sides and rarities. Palace Music includes: Will Oldham, Todd Brashear, Liam Hayes, Rian Murphy, Bob Nastanovitch, Ned Oldham, Paul Oldham, David Pajo. By 1997, Will Oldham was ready to cast off the Palace mantle and pursue a solo career, but not before leaving fans with this unforgettable memento. LOST BLUES is basically a collection of b-sides and alternate versions of Palace songs, but instead of a being a batch of leftovers, it's as definitive as the "best-of" collection Oldham is far too iconoclastic to ever consider. The early single "Ohio River Boat Song" represents the band's tradition-minded beginnings. The Mekons-penned "Horses" stands as a testament to Palace's development into an honest-to-goodness rock band. "West Palm Beach" and "GulfShores" shared sides of a later 45, and they document Oldham's rise to lo-fi folk-rock poet king, occupying a unique place in the '90s indie-rock world. LOST BLUES is a perfect legacy for a band too mercurial to pin down and too important to forget. SKU: 1007383

The man who once upon a time made treating your girl like a prostitute sound like an okay thing to do, the one who can make you laugh, disgusted and pensive (sometimes all in one song) is back with an album that possesses all the characteristics that made him one of the more respected rap artists of his time. The arrogance, the ability to use words in a way that is not just auditory but visual as well, the unique sense of storytelling and humor--all of these qualities areevident on this album. Slick Rick demonstrates here that even though you can silence a good storyteller for a while, you can never take away his ability to captivate an audience. SKU: 1017276

Spiders
SPIDERS comes with a bonus disc containing the UK single "Female" as well as other non-LP tracks unavailable elsewhere. Space: Jamie, Tommy, Franny, Andy. Additional personnel: Tony Pierce (trumpet); Gerald Lynch (percussion); Yorkie (background vocals). Producers: Stephen Lironi, Ian Richardson, Nick Coler. Engineers: Jeremy Wheatley, Andy Kowalski, Alan Douglas, Stephen Lironi. Even if this British quartet never records another album, its place in '90s pop history is assured by virtue of SPIDERS' standout cut, "Female Of The Species," which combines dance beats, synth-pop and an irresistible, Bacharach-esque chorus that could entice Dionne Warwick to abandon the Psychic Friends Network. Otherwise, Space's debut album establishes that the band is basically a bunch of wisenheimers with synthesizers. Space specializes in sarcastic, hyper-literary songs, coming off as Oscar Wilde witha drum machine. Occasionally, the breathy Brit vocals and percolating electronics suggest EMF's smarter cousins. Despite the loaded subjects the songs often tackle (love, death, etc.), the band takes almost nothing seriously. Space's sense of humor keeps SPIDERS from crossing the line between witty and pretentious. SKU: 1001445

Mag Earwhig
Guided By Voices: Robert Pollard (vocals, electric & acoustic guitars, piano, drums, synthesizer); Doug Gillard (electric, acoustic & nylon-string guitars, background vocals, bass); John Petkovic (electric guitar, synthesizer, background vocals); Don Depew (electric guitar, bass, synthesizer, organ, background vocals); Dave Swanson (drums, maracas, background vocals). Additional personnel: Chad Stanisic (organ); Tobin Sprout (bass, electric guitar, slide guitar, background vocals, acoustic guitar, synthesizer, drums); Jim Pollard (bass, guitar, synthesizer); Mitch Mitchell (bass, guitar); Johnny Strange (bass); Kevin Fennell, Joe Buben (drums); John Shough (programming). Producers: Robert Pollard, Doug Gillard, John Petkovic, Don Depew, Dave Swanson, Mitch Mitchell, John Croslin. Engineers: Don Depew, Jon Shough, John Croslin, Tobin Sprout. Principally recorded at 609, Cleveland, Ohio; Cro-Magnon and Refraze, Dayton, Ohio. MAG EARWHIG! is a halting step toward high-fidelity power-pop from a band that made its name on unfinished, low-fidelity pop miniatures. It also introduces an almost entirely new Guided By Voices. Bandleader Robert Pollard dispensed with his usual supporting crew and recorded a big chunk of MAG EARWHIG!--which purports to be a rock opera about a guy known as the Magnificent Earwhig--with the members of the Cleveland band Cobra Verde. Between Pollard's growing taste for three-minute pop-song structure and the band's classic-rock oomph, much of MAG EARWHIG! comes across as the fulfillment of the arena-rock dreams Pollard's fans have had for him from the start. "Bulldog Skin" has a Mick Jagger swagger; "Little Lines" could bea great lost Smithereens single, and "Now To War" recalls mid-'70s Pete Townshend. Not ready to give up on his past altogether, Pollard also cut several tracks in basement fidelity with the old GBV crew. Among them are the acoustic ditty "I Am Produced," which either mocks or salutes the gleaming 24-track productions elsewhere on the album. Either way, it's a sign that this lo-fi hero hasn't forgotten where he came from. SKU: 1007418

Dakar
Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Cecil Payne, Pepper Adams (baritone saxophone); Mal Waldron (piano); Doug Watkins (bass); Art Taylor (drums). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on April 20, 1957. Originally released on Prestige (7280). Includes original release liner notes by David A. Himmelstein. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Though Coltrane was already a veteran of two years with the Miles Davis Quintet and several all-star saxophone sessions for Prestige, it was his 1957 date DAKAR that found the tenor saxophonist beginning to stretch out in earnest as a leader. While his boppishBlue Note solo date BLUE TRAIN showed Trane extending on his mainstream mastery, DAKAR found this adventurous musician exploring some of the exotic sounds and inspirations which would mark his future growth. Coltrane's full-bodied, percussive use of dual baritone saxophones, with a tenor saxophone filling out the bottom of the chord, reflects his interest in one of composer Sun Ra's favorite arranging devices. The African-inflected title tune, with its provocative minor vamp and swinging release, shows Coltrane very much under the spell of the Sun Ra Arkestra's greatest soloist, tenor man John Gilmore. The circuitous harmonies of producer Teddy Charles' "Route 4" also suggest Sun Ra's particular brand of tension and release, and inspire jagged jump choruses from pianist Mal Waldron and Coltrane. Waldron's "Velvet Scene" inspires one of Coltrane's most poignant ballad performances, proving that for all his technical complexity, the tenor saxophonist could always warm up the house with a simple expressive melody. Elsewhere, a skanky "Cat Walk" and a steaming "Witches Pit" illustrate Coltrane's commanding blues vocabulary at varied tempos. On "Mary's Blues," Coltrane's preaching lines and searing upper register cries make for a lively tonal contrast, interspersed as they are between Cecil Payne's garrulous testimonies and Pepper Adams' dark levitations. Live At Max's Kansas City
The Velvet Underground: Lou Reed (vocals, guitar); Sterling Morrison (guitar); Doug Yule (bass, vocals); Bill Yule (drums). Recorded live at Max's Kansas City, New York, New York in Summer 1970. Includes liner notes by Mark Meyerson. A far cry from the fervor of the seminal LIVE 1969, this live recording, though it was made only a year later, is the swan song of the Velvet Underground. Velvets fan/friend Brigid Polk brought her home cassette machine to this gig at one of the band's favorite NY haunts to record it for herself. Though it was cleaned up upon its eventuation to album format, it still bears the lo-fi marksof it's origin, adding to the gritty, you-were-there feeling. The band had lost idiosyncratic, minimalist drummer Mo Tucker by this time, and were performing material from what's arguably their least memorable album (LOADED), so there's none of their previous live fireworks to be found here. By this time, it was undisputedly Reed's show, so just think of this as the first great live Lou Reed album. The band is at their most polished here, but the amateur sound quality provides a serendipitously ragged edge to the proceedings. The first half of the album is filled with bracing rockers, mostly from LOADED, while the second contains the band's most affecting ballads, largely from their earlier albums. Get 1969 first, then explore this album's subtler charms. SKU: 4112408

Room To Roam
Personnel: Mike Scott (vocals, guitar, piano); Steve Wickham (vocals, fiddle, organ); Anthony Thistlethwaite (mandolin, saxophone); Sharon Shannon (fiddle, accordion); Colin Blakey (whistle, flute, piano, organ); Trevor Hutchinson (bouzouki, bass); Noel Bridgeman (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Kieran Wilde (clarinet); Roddy Lorimer (trumpet); Neil Sidwell (trombone); Barry Beckett (piano); Ken Samson (didgeridoo); Seamus Begley, Eileen Begley, John Burke, Diarmuid O'Suilleabhan (background vocals). Recorded at Spiddal House, Spiddal, County Galway, Ireland. If one were to divide the Waterboys' career into three parts, ROOM TO ROAM would fall at the end of the middle Irish folk segment. The Waterboys' Scots main man Mike Scott's love for Ireland is expressed in each song--the clearest example being "Islandman." Scott's band includes long-time partner Anthony Thistlewaite, accordion player Sharon Shannon, and renowned fiddler Steve Wickham, who really comes into his own here, contributing his touching "Upon the Wind and Waves." Notable are a lively take on "The Raggle Taggle Gypsy," "Spring Comes to Spiddal," a spectacularly sprightly ode to the town the album was recorded in, and "Further Up, Further In," a gorgeously catchy song that sets Scott's lyrics to a traditional folk song. Also noteworthy are a pair of beautiful love songs, "A Man in Love" and "How Long Will I Love You?," both of which are sincere enough to make listeners feel they're eavesdropping on a private moment. Concrete
Fear Factory: Burton C. Bell (vocals); Dino Cazares (guitar, bass); Andy Romero (bass); Raymond Herrera (drums). Additional personnel: Dave "Hateface" Gibney (spoken vocals). Recorded at Blackie Lawless's Fort Apache Studio, Hollywood, California. Includes liner notes by Dan Kaye. Fear Factory were among the pioneers of a metal subgenre that became the blueprint for nu-metal as we know it today, their sound typified by down-tuned, syncopated guitar riffing with vocals switching on a dime between death-metal growling and a clean singing style. As the band closed the book on their 12-year career, a fitting tribute came in the release of CONCRETE. While most fans think of SOUL OF A NEW MACHINE as the band's first release, CONCRETE is the lost album that was meant to be Fear Factory's debut. Recorded in 1991, the sessions (under the direction of producer Ross Robinson) have until now been a buried treasure of sorts, as the product was shelved after completion (due in part to a legal dispute with Robinson). Once signed to Roadrunner, the band re-recorded several songs for SOULOF A NEW MACHINE (including "Big God/Raped Souls," "Self Immolation," "Crisis," "Desecrate," and "Escape Confusion"). What CONCRETE lacks in production values, it more than makes up for in the sheer ferocity of the performances. Here was a band searching for it's own musical voice, reaching beyond their death-metal and industrial-influenced roots. SKU: 1073776
