Welcome To Wherever You Are
INXS: Michael Hutchence (vocals); Kirk Pengilly (guitar, saxophone, background vocals); Andrew Farriss (guitar, keyboards); Tim Farriss (guitar); Garry Gary Beers (bass); Jon Farriss (drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: Sunil De Silva (percussion); Deni Hines (background vocals). Recorded at Rhinoceros Studios, Sydney, Australia. Originally released on Atlantic (82394). Includes liner notes by Mark Opitz. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Ironically, INXS's best and most experimental album came out exactly when the album-buying public had ceased paying much attention to them. After the multi-platinum success of 1987's KICK, the disappointing sales of1990's follow-up X brought whispers of "has-been" to the Australian combo, and the fine LIVE BABY LIVE was largely viewed as an attempt to coast on former glories. 1992's WELCOME TO WHEREVER YOU ARE answered these accusations with surprising grace and subtlety. Arranged and largely written by keyboardist Andrew Farriss, these 12 tracks are almost Beatles-esque in their melodic canniness and sharply etched, multi-layered production. The first single, "Not Enough Time," is a particular delight, a breathy, atmospheric pop song that's as smart and pretty as 10cc at its creative peak. SKU: 1006525

Night And Day
Personnel: Joe Jackson (vocals, alto saxophone, piano, Fender Rhodes, Hammond organ, synthesizer, vibraphone); Ed Rynesdal (violin, keyboard programming); Sue Hadjopoulos (flute, xylophone, congas, bongos, timbales, orchestra bells, percussion, background vocals); Graham Maby (bass, percussion, background vocals); Larry Tolfree (drums, timbales, percussion); Ricardo Torres (bongos, cowbell, clave); Jack Waldman (keyboard programming); Al Weisman, Grace Millan (background vocals). Recorded at Blue Rock Studio, Soho, New York City in spring, 1982. This is the album where Jackson startsshowing off his compositional and instrumental chops. By 1982 he had moved to New York, where he developed a great love of Latin music. Perhaps spurred by his 1981 jump blues outing JUMPIN' JIVE, Jackson again stepped away from his rock & roll past, this time with some outstanding original tunes. NIGHT AND DAY merges Latin sounds with pop, jazz and classic Gershwinesque melodic elegance. It contains the most mature and instantly satisfying compositions of Jackson's career. The Latin percussion of Sue Hadjopoulos and Jackson' own salsa-tinge piano provide continuity throughout the album. In what was a revolutionary move for a pop-rock artist at the time, Jackson jettisoned his guitarist in favor of a second keyboardist, and the piano, organ and synthesizer textures provide much of the meat for the arrangements. Alternately propulsive and reflective, NIGHT AND DAY reflects the concerns of an Englishman in New York City in the early '80s, but the album's biggest hit "Steppin' Out" is a graceful, synth-flavored love ballad that's as timeless as great pop songs get. One Night With You
Full title: One Night With You: The Best Of Love, Volume 2. Personnel: Luther Vandross, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey (vocals); R. Kelly (various instruments, background vocals); Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Ralph B. Stacy (various instruments); Nashville String Machine (strings); Dann Huff, Mike Scott (guitar); `Big Jim' Wright (keyboards); Keith Thomas (synthesizer, bass programming); Phil Madeira (Hammond B-3 organ); Stokley (percussion); Mr. Lee, Stephen George (programming); Alex Richbourg, Mark Hammond (drum programming); Lisa Cochran, Trey Lorenz, Dennis Bettis, Crystal Collins, Ron Neal, Ann Nesby, Jamecia Bennett, Pat Lacy (background vocals). Producers include: R. Kelly, Keith Thomas, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Luther Vandross. Engineers: Bill Whittington, Stephen George, Mike Alvord, Paul Falcone, Steve Hodge, Ray Bardani, Paul Brown, Dana Jon Chappelle. Digitally remastered by Chris Gehringer (The Hit Factory). "When You Call On Me/Baby That's When I Come Running" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. Since emerging from the world of session-work in the '70s, Luther Vandross has spent the '80s and most of the '90s cultivating a smooth image as an unparalleled soul balladeer. Vandross' 1989 double-CD compilation THE BEST OF earned him his first Pop Top 10 ("Here And Now") and a 1990 Grammy Award. ONE NIGHT WITHYOU is the companion compilation that covers the bulk of his '90s work. Kicking off with four new songs, the album includes pop conspirators Dianne Warren, R.Kelly and the Minneapolis duo of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who push for a new-jack edge on "I Won't Let You Do That To Me." The remaining tracks are a mix of straight-up ballads ("I Can Make It Better"), a dance-friendly Janet Jackson remix ("The Best Things In Life Are Free") and a handful of covers that include an unexpectedly sanctified take on Stephen Stills' free-love anthem "Love The One You're With." Gems
Aerosmith: Steven Tyler (vocals, harmonica, piano); Joe Perry (guitar, background vocals); Brad Whitford (guitar); Tom Hamilton (bass); Joey Kramer (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Jimmy Crespo, Rick Dufay (guitar); David Woodford (saxophone); Richie Supa, Scott Cushnie (piano). Producers include: Jack Douglas, Gary Lyons, Tony Bongiovi, Ray Colcord, Aerosmith. Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder (CBS Records Studios, New York, New York). During Aerosmith's firsttour of duty at Columbia Records, the group established a reputation as America's premiere hard rock band. The group has influenced bands ranging from Guns N' Roses to R.E.M., who covered "Toys in the Attic." GEMS can be looked at as the follow-up to GREATEST HITS, the band's prior compilation. Unlike GREATEST HITS, which focused on chart hits and radio-familiar tracks, this collection leans more toward the band's harder-rocking material. Listening to early songs like the stripped-down "Mama Kin" or the fuller and more sinister "Lord of the Thighs," it is clear how Aerosmith attracted such a devoted following. As the group refined its craft, it also developed its trademark sass and swagger, best represented on the wailing "Critical Mass" and the autobiographical "No Surprize." Even on the sizzling "Jailbait," a track recorded by the post-Joe Perry/Brad Whitford lineup, Aerosmith's hard-hitting delivery is still there. Another standout is the Yardbirds' "Train Kept a Rollin'," a song that over time has almost become Aerosmith's own. SKU: 1009439

Young Americans [Remastered]
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, guitar, piano); John Lennon (vocals, guitar); Carlos Alomar, Earl Slick (guitar); David Sanborn (saxophone); Mike Garson (piano); Willie Weeks, Emir Kassan (bass); Andy Newmark, Dennis Davis (drums); Larry Washington (congas); Pablo Rosario, Ralph McDonald (percussion); Ava Cherry, Robin Clark, Diane Sumler, Jean Fineberg, Jean Millington, Luther Vandross, Anthony Hinton, Warren Peace (background vocals). Producers: Tony Visconti, DavidBowie, Harry Maslin. Recorded at Sigma Sound, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Electric Ladyland, New York, New York. Digitally remastered by Peter Mew and Nigel Reeve (1999, Abbey Road Studios, London, England). David Bowie abandoned the glam/sci-fi personae of Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs with this radical departure. Recorded at Sigma Sound Studios, the home of Philadelphia International, it featured the label's crack house band and, as a result, confirmed the singer's growing love of soul and R&B. Pulsating dance grooves abound, in particular on the disco-influenced "Fame," which topped the US singles chart. The song was co-written with John Lennon, a compliment Bowie repaid by reinventing the ex-Beatle's "Across The Universe" as a dancefloor classic. Such self-confidence abounds throughout this album which shows the singer firmly in command of yet another musical direction. SKU: 1025344

Producers include: Denniz Pop, Jake, Max Martin, Cutfather, Joe. Engineers include: Mads Nilsson, Joe Belmaati, Dave Walters. Rich Neville, Scott Robinson, Abs Breen, J Brown and Sean Colon make up the singing and rapping quintet called Five. Hailing from theUnited Kingdom, Five hit the American charts and airwaves with their first single, "When The Lights Go Out." With endless energy and creative passion, Five explodes on songs like "That's What You Told Me," "Slam Dunk (Da Funk)" and "Everybody Get Up," which uses a clever sample from Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'N' Roll." When not bouncing to fun, high energy pop songs, Five releases their soulful and sensitive side on power ballads like "When I Remember When" and "Satisfied." Co-written and produced by Denniz Pop, Cutfather & Joe and Max Martin, the album has elements of pop, rap and R&B. Although young, Five has a maturity and overall polished sound that even some veteran groups lack. SKU: 1001524

Adapt Or Die (Ten Years Of Remixes) [Digipak]
Everything But The Girl: Tracey Thorn (vocals); Ben Watt. Producers: Adam F; DJ Jazzy Jeff; Pete Kuzma; John Coxon; Simon Grey; King Britt; Tim Motzer; Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez; Brad Wood; Dave Wallace; Kevin Yost; Jay "Sinister" Sealee; Eddie Frente; Todd Terry; C.L. McSpadden. Recording information: 1990 - 2004. Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn (the music and voice, respectively, behind EBTG) have been recording since the early 1980s, they have moved from bossa nova to acoustic rock to lush, orchestral pop to drum-and-bassand beyond. Not only have EBTG adapted successfully to the changing trends of the music industry, they have retained a consistently individual sound and sensibility. Since Thorn's vocal turn on Massive Attack's PROTECTION (1995) and EBTG's own 1995 hit, "Missing," the duo have been recognized as prime movers in electronica and DJ circles, and it is this aspect of EBTG that ADAPT OR DIE addresses. Though Watt has been involved in numerous remix and production projects over the years, ADAPT OR DIE contains compositions written by Watt and Thorn and remixed by an array of guests. DJ Jazzy Jeff's treatment of 1996's "Mirrorball" kicks off the set, with Brad Wood's dreamy, trip-hop version of "Single" and Kevin Yost's disco-fied take on "Five Fathoms" being additional highlights. Thorn's sultry, diva-on-the-nod vocals dominate here, and the pair's breezy, sophisticated vibe is still in intact, yet the remixes add depth and dimension to the tunes, making a perfect soundtrack for club-going, as well as headphone immersion. When The Circus Comes To Town
Released in 1995, well over 30 years after Glasgow-born acoustic guitarist Bert Jansch set the British folk and blues scene aflame with his skilled playing and expressive vocals, WHEN THE CIRCUS COMES TO TOWN shows that Jansch was arguably playing better than ever. Through numerous solo albums and a long partnership with fellow guitarist John Renbourn (which included several group albums as the Pentangle, with singer Jacqui McShee and bassist DannyThompson), Jansch had added American country and jazz influences and a strong undercurrent of Indian and North African drones to his folk and blues-based music. All of these sounds intermingle throughout WHEN THE CIRCUS COMES TO TOWN, so that even a simple blues like "Honey, Don't You Understand" sounds more complex upon closer listening. A deeply satisfying album. SKU: 1007249

Meditations
Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone, percussion); Pharoah Sanders (tenor saxophone, tambourine, bells); McCoy Tyner (piano); Jimmy Garrison (acoustic bass); Elvin Jones, Rashied Ali (drums). Producer: Bob Thiele. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on November 23, 1965. Includes original release liner notes by Nat Hentoff. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios). 1965 was a turning point in the life of John Coltrane. It was at this point that he crossed the line into the free jazz arena that he had been approaching since the early '60s. Besides his landmark ASCENSION, no better album illustrates this than the awe-inspiring MEDITATIONS. Coltrane's regular quartet with McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums) is expanded here with second drummer Rashied Ali (who would assume Jones' spot after this album) and saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. This conglomeration produces some dense textures, especially in the epic first track, "The Father and The Son and The Holy Ghost." This sonic hurricane is a 13-minute outpouring of spiritual emotion that is at once compelling and exhausting. Elsewhere, the group delicately follows Coltrane's lead on the passionate "Love" and swings with abandon on the raucous "Consequences" as Sanders and 'Trane battle like warriors above the churning rhythm section. Finally, the aptly titled "Serenity" is a swirling free-form improvisation gently touching back down to earth after an adventurous ride through the heavens. SKU: 1002517

Horse Of A Different Color
Big & Rich: John Rich, Big Kenny. Additional personnel: Martina McBride, Gretchen Wilson, Cowboy Troy, Jon Nicholson. Producers: Big Kenny, John Rich, Paul Worley. Big & Rich: John Rich (vocals, acoustic guitar); Big John (vocals). Additional personnel include: Adam Shoenfield (electric guitar); Mike Johnson (steel guitar); Nicole Summers (flute); Michael Rojas (keyboards); Matt Pierson (bass instrument); Wayne Killius (drums); Gretchen Wilson, Martina McBride (background vocals). Producers: Big Kenny; John Rich; Paul Worley. Listening to any number of the slick chart-busters produced by the Nashville machine, one might wonder what would happen if all those immensely talented musicians and songwriters were left to their own devices, entirely free fromcommercial restraints. HORSE OF A DIFFERENT COLOR presents a definitive and immensely enjoyable answer. Comprised of ex-Lonestar lead vocalist/bassist John Rich and longtime Nashville songwriter/scenester Big Kenny, Big & Rich stakes a claim as country music's counterpart to They Might Be Giants (or perhaps even Frank Zappa), combining a dizzying array of styles and unorthodox lyrical subject matter with gleeful abandon. Charging out of the gate with a song that borrows from Limp Bizkit and prominently features Cowboy Troy, "the world's only six-foot, five-inch, 250-pound black cowboy rapper," the album careens from Jimmy Buffet-like party anthems ("Big Time") to AC/DC-influenced, double-entendre-laden rockers ("Save a Horse [Ride a Cowboy]"). Luckily, the incredibly high caliber of musicianship and unwavering creative spirit keep the record from ever slipping into parody. Instead, Big & Rich have single-handedly created a new hybrid genre that promises to inspire a host of similarly inclined free spirits. SKU: 6570616

Razor's Edge, The [Digipak] [Remastered]
AC/DC: Brian Johnson (vocals); Angus Young, Malcolm Young (guitar); Cliff Williams (bass); Chris Slade (drums). Originally released as ATCO (91413). Includes liner notes by Alan Di Perna. AC/DC had been nearly written off as a shadow of its former pulverizing self at the start of the '90s. It seemed, sadly, that the band's best hard rock years were behind them and a younger, more able-bodied generation of rockers would be needed to carry the torch. Out of nowhere, then, came THE RAZOR'S EDGE, an album of startling potency. Not only was the firepower back in terms of gripping riffs, but the band was able to summon the focus to lay out its most memorable collection of songs in years. With "Thunderstruck" alone, the band shakes off complacency with one mighty swipe. It's an instant AC/DC classic, scouring the familiar terrain of piercing guitar lines, and a locked in rhythm section. The band also scored a direct hit with "Moneytalks," a pop-hook-with-a-wallop single that nearly matches the band's 1980's radio staple, "You Shook MeAll Night Long." SKU: 1082946

American Stars 'N' Bars [Remastered]
Personnel:Neil Young (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Frank Sampredo (acoustic & electric guitars, synthesizer); Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Nicolette Larson (background vocals). Ben Keith (steel guitar, dobro, background vocals); Carole Mayedo (violin); Billy Talbot (bass, background vocals); Tim Drummond (bass); Ralph Molina (drums, background vocals); Karl T. Himmel (drums). Producers: Neil Young, David Briggs, Tim Mulligan, Elliot Mazer. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Released right after the career albums TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT and ZUMA and right before the big-selling COMES A TIME and RUST NEVER SLEEPS, this country-rocky 1977 album is often forgotten. But it introduced the sensational "Like A Hurricane," which has remained a staple of Young's concerts, and such quirky favorites as "Homegrown," an ode to marijuana, and "Old Country Waltz," which is exactly what it says it is. As Neil Young's legendary 1970s albums go, it might be a bit of a tossed-off affair, but most country-rockers can only dream of making one album this good. SKU: 1085153
