Dirt
Alice In Chains: Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Michael Starr (bass); Sean Kinney (drums). Additional personnel: Tom Araya (background vocals). Recorded in 1992. Brutal and hard but exciting and surprisingly melodic, DIRT made Alice In Chains national stars in 1992 after being around the Seattle alternative rock scene for many years. They produce a blindingly together sound, with the bass of Mike Starr able to switch between following the bass drum beat and cloning Jerry Cantrell's guitar note for note, albeit a few octaves lower. They have such polish that they are often reminiscent of the heyday of Led Zeppelin. Lyrically they plow the familiarangst furrow with tracks such as 'Junkhead', 'Sickman' and 'God Smack'. Equally satisfying are 'Them Bones' and 'Rooster', which saw them start in a direction that led to Jar Of Flies two years later. SKU: 1000697

Let You Down
The Kingsbury Manx includes: Jerry Kee (pedal steel guitar); Steve Norfleet (flute). Recorded at Sound Of Music, Richmond, Virginia and Duck Kee Studios, Mebane, North Carolina between December 2000 and May 2001. This Chapel Hill, NC quartet's second album continues to seamlessly meld progressive and folkish inclinations into a beautifully impressionistic landscape. While the band embraces a pastoral grace, they never stoop to mere prettiness--there's a haunting air of melancholy and darkness whispering from behind every tree. There's a hefty dose of hypnotic psychedelia flying through the songs, but this is built over a foundation of relatively simple, almost-folk songs. The soothing simplicity of the music belies intricately crafted arrangements. The band's soft but confidently articulatedharmony vocals have the evocative smoothness of a marble statue covered with vines. Even the guitars feel like they're breathing in unison with the singing. Songs like "Porchlight," "Simplify," and "Rustic Stairs" are built around vibrato guitar parts, but all the instruments are playing along to the same pulse, even without the vibrato effect. This creates a wondrous effect that shimmers like streetlights through a rain-spattered windshield. In short, this is gorgeous music. SKU: 1065151

Grateful Dead (Skull & Roses/Expanded And Remastered)
The Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (vocals, harmonica, keyboards); Phil Lesh (vocals, bass); Bill Kreutzmann (drums, percussion). Recorded at RCA Victor Studio A, Hollywood, California and Coast Recorders, San Francisco, California. Includes liner notes by Blair Jackson. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. The GratefulDead's self-titled first album contains the main ingredients of the unique musical stew the band would brew over the coming years. Upon its release in March 1967, it brought the musical and philosophical ideals of the freak counter-culture out of the Bay Area and into the ears of mainstream America. "The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)" is a Summer Of Love anthem nonpareil. "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" shows off the Dead's ability to reinterpret the blues, and Pigpen's natural front-man qualities. The hyperactive rockabilly of Jesse Fuller's "Beat It On Down The Line" and the rearranged traditionals "Sitting On Top Of The World" and "Cold Rain And Snow" are proof that, despite the group's anti-establishment fashions, their lyrical symbols and musical forms were as time-honored as the English folk-tale that provided their name. While the cover of Bonnie Dobson's eerie anti-war epic "Morning Dew" and the women-and-wine rocker "New, New Minglewood Blues" are energetic portrayals of hippie values, the closing number, Noah Lewis's "Viola Lee Blues," is the album's grand, mind-blowing concoction and a highlight. The remastered version's live bonus tracks include some never-recorded garage-rock and blues cuts and a 23-minute "Viola Lee Blues" bearing the first hints of the modal riff at the foundation of Dead milestone "Dark Star." Don Cartegena
Personnel includes: Fat Joe, Noreaga, Big Punisher,Jadakiss, Nas, Raekwon, Charli Baltimore, The Terror Squad, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Armageddon, Lord Finesse, Big L, AG, Prospect. Producers include: Armageddon, Lord Finesse, Buckwild, Armando Colon, Marley Marl. Engineers include: Christian Delatour, Paul Gregory, Dexter Thibou. DON CARTAGENA is the third release from the unofficial mayor of the Bronx, Fat Joe, and with the noise made by his rap twin Big Pun, Fat Joe and his Terror Squad MCs have set things off for Latinos in hip-hop. Since day one, Joe has kicked punishing lyrics over gangster-driven beats, and he stays true to his forte on DON as well. Collaborating with the likes of Noreaga, Nas, Raekwon and many others, Joe remains one of hip-hop's most street-credible artists. The song topics here stay consistent with his first two albums, and numerous posse cuts give the album lyrical diversity. Three albums deep, Fat Joe still knows how to flow. SKU: 1001746

Mr. Smith
Personnel: LL Cool J, Foxy Brown, Fat Joe, Keith Murray, Prodigy, LeShaun (rap vocals); Boyz II Men, Terri & Monica (vocals); TrackMasters, Rashad Smith (various instruments); Eric Cody(keyboards); Sonya Magett (background vocals). Producers: Tone, Rashad Smith, Easy Mo Bee, ChySkillz, Chad "Dr. Ceuss" Elliot. Engineers include: Paul Lanni, Mario Rodriguez, George Karras. "Hey Lover" won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. MR. SMITH was nominated for the 1997 Grammy for Best Rap Album. While many of rap music's old-school artists have suffered a downfall, Def Jam's first recording artist, LL Cool J, has remained at the top of the list of successful, surviving MCs. His Lady-Lovin' personality and party-rocking rhyming style are only two reasons for the platinum success of his sixth album, MR. SMITH. Call it a comeback. MR. SMITH recalls several moments of 1990's MAMA SAID KNOCK YOU OUT in both its smoothed-out and hard-core hits--the two sides of LL's hip-hop persona. The album's lead-off single, "Hey Lover," features harmonized crooning from Boyz II Men, and once again crowns LL as the king of the rap ballad. Likewise, on "Doin' It," he gets vocally soft and intimate for a duet with LeShaun. But the album features its tough moments as well, particularly when Keith Murray, Mobb Deep's Prodigy and others add their street flavor to a remix of the headbanger track, "I Shot Ya." SKU: 1000722

You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol.4
Full title: You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore, Vol. 4. Personnel includes: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Ray White, Denny Walley, Warren Cucurrullo (guitar); Ian Underwood (clarinet, alto saxophone); Bobby Martin (saxophone, keyboards); Paul Carman, Albert Wing (saxophone); Walt Fowler (trumpet); Arthur Barrow (keyboards, bass); Don Preston, Peter Wolf (keyboards); Roy Estrada, Tom Fowler (bass); Vinnie Colaiuta, Chad Wackerman, Chester Thompson, Ralph Humphrey, Terry Bozzio (drums); Ed Mann, Ruth Underwood (percussion). Engineers include: Bob Stone, Mark Pinske, Kerry McNab. Recorded live between 1969 and 1984. Two more hours of assorted live performances from Frank Zappa's vast archives. The intent here was again to show off the skills of his '70s and '80s ensembles (one cut of the Mothers in '69 appears on each of the discs) and the songs are for the most part drawn from then-current releases. A few older numbers ("My guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama" and "Willie the Pimp") are given a spin, and show themselves worthy of the trip. A nice surprise comes in the form of "Love Of My Life" (from RUBEN & THE JETS) played at a New York City club in 1980 (the city where large chunks of the early Mothers of Invention's repertoire came into its own). As with the other titles in this series, they're sequenced with a keen sense of making a worthy listening experience and not just documenting the past. SKU: 1007671

Spiceworld
Spice Girls: Victoria (Posh Spice), Emma (Baby Spice), Melanie C. (Sporty Spice), Melanie B. (Scary Spice), Geri (Ginger Spice). Additional personnel: Absolute (various instruments); John Themis (acoustic guitar); Milton McDonald, Shawn Lee (guitar); Pure Stringz (strings); Snake Davis (flute); Kick Horns (brass); Matt Rowe, Magnus Fiennes (keyboards, programming); Steve Lewison, Paul "Tubbs" Williams (bass); Pete Davis, Mike Higham (programming). Producers: Richard Stannard, Matt Rowe, Absolute. Engineers: Adrian Bushby, Jeremy Wheatley, Paul Hicks, Mark Tucker. Did they actually write the songs, each of which is credited to the Spice Girls plus a couple of songwriting pros? Do Posh and Ginger actually sing on them?Do you really care? In perfect bubblegum form, the Spice Girls capitalize on their moment by releasing their second album in nine months, aping their idols (Madonna, Boy George, the Supremes) even better than they did on the first one, and separating the filler you were expecting anyway with a couple of monster singles you never could have predicted. The bubbly Motown dance tune "Stop" is either the Supremes filtered through the Archies or Culture Club filtered through St. Etienne--either way, a great lost pop melody hit upside the head by a dollop of new-wave kitsch. "Spice Up Your Life" is the requisite follow-up to "Wannabe," except that it doesn't sound that much like it, and its slinky, Latin-ized beat and fast sing-song rapping are nearly irresistible. Will they be around in another nine months? Do you really need an Andrews-Sisters-in-a-strip-club take on Madonna's "Vogue" ("Lady Is a Vamp")? Do you even care? SKU: 1003127

Miracle, The
Queen: Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon, Roger Taylor. Recorded at Olympic Studios, Town House Studios, London, England and Mountain Studios, Montreux, Switzerland. All songs written by Queen. THE MIRACLE was a comeback album of sorts for Queen, who had just come off a three-year break prior to its release. Instead of experimenting with different musical styles (as on 1982's dance-heavy HOT SPACE), Queen wisely stuck to its hard-rock roots for the most part, making THE MIRACLE one of the band's most successful U.S. releases of the '80s--both artistically and commercially. With rumors swirling of an impending breakup due to personal problems within the band, many fans breathed a sigh of relief when THE MIRACLE finally appeared in 1989. THE MIRACLE turned out to be Queen's most consistent album since 1984's THE WORKS. Never before had Queen's lyrics been so obviously biographical as on THE MIRACLE. Four tracks in particular, "Party," "Khashoggi's Ship," "Scandal," and "Was It All Worth It," all examine the ups and downs of being a rock & roll celebrity. The band turns poetic and poignant on the superb title track, rocks furiously on the single "I Want It All," and offers interestingslabs of both dance ("The Invisible Man") and expertly crafted pop ("Breakthru"). For The Masses (A Tribute To Depeche Mode)
FOR THE MASSES is a tribute album to Depeche Mode. Producers include: Ted De Bono, Gary Dobbins, Robert Smith, Jack Dangers, Matt Mahaffey. Engineers include: Palli Borg, C. Hawkes, Paul Corkett, Jeff Moleski, Bobby Dufresne, Jr. As one of the prime innovators of synth-pop, Depeche Mode has influenced an entire generation of knob-twiddling, mousse-wearing devotees. Since 1981, their dark, scientific sound has defined the genre, moving the synthesizer into edgy, aggressive realms. FOR THE MASSES finds that generation paying overdue tribute to the men in black, combining a wide variety of bands who've followed in their footsteps in one way or another (with the exception of the Cure, whose recorded output predates DM's but who contribute a sonically rich version of "World In My Eyes" nonetheless). FOR THE MASSES sticks to Depeche Mode's more aggressive and mostly later work--the soft pop of "New Life" or "See You" is eschewed for more hard-edged themes. Some of the covers show avery direct lineage to the band--Rammstein's gut-wrenching "Stripped" and Meat Beat Manifesto's breakneck "Everything Counts" inject an over-the-top element of aggression, while Hooverphonic's "Shake the Disease" displays this band's talent for giving a song breathing room without compromising its intensity. Smashing Pumpkins even deliver an inspired, beefed-up take on "Never Let Me Down Again." SKU: 1006274

Infinity [Remastered]
Also available in a 3-pack with ESCAPE and FRONTIERS. Journey: Steve Perry (vocals); Neal Schon (guitar); Gregg Rolie (keyboards); Ross Valory (bass); Aynsley Dunbar (drums). Digitally remastered by Bob Ludwig & Brian Lee (Gateway Mastering Studios, Portland, Maine). 1978's INFINITY was easily one of the most important albums in Journey's career up until that point. While it did spawn one sizeable hit, "Wheel in the Sky," more importantly INFINITY was singer Steve Perry's debut with the band. While touches of Journey's early fusion/progressive leanings can still be detected, a new sound and approach was right around the corner. WithPerry now in the line-up, the band would soon be rocketing up the U.S. singles and albums charts. SKU: 1012435

Your Woman
Personnel includes: Sunshine Anderson (vocals); Mikey Dan, Anthony Hamilton, Dolo Pichino, Laylah Hathaway, Kayla Parker, Timothy Deberry, Erick T. Coomes. Producers: Mike City, Mark Sparks. Engineers include: Mark Mitchell, Jesse Stewart, Mike Povitch. "Heard It All Before (E-Smoove House Filter Mix)" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award For Best Remixed Recording. R&B diva Sunshine Anderson has carved out a niche all her own. While she has some of the roots-conscious feel of Macy Gray (a strong supporter of Anderson) and D'Angelo, she doesn't go for a retro-'70s sound. Conversely, Anderson surrounds her powerful, throaty voice with many of the trademarks of contemporary R&B production (drum loops, faux-analog synth lines), but she's undeniably a cut above many of the generic-sounding new-schoolers who worship at the shrine of R. Kelly and the like. There's a conceptual thread linking the songs on YOUR WOMAN, but it's not exactly MOBY DICK. You won't need any footnotes to enjoy this album, just a passion for sharply executed, highly emotive R&B with one foot in tradition and one inclined determinedly towards the future. SKU: 1059696

4 Track Demos
4-TRACK DEMOS contains eight songs from RID OF ME and six previously unreleased songs all in demo form. 4-TRACK DEMOS is PJ Harvey's second collection of album demos (the first was included on the limited edition version of her DRY album), and is further proof, if it were needed, of the astonishing power of her songwriting. Consisting of demos from the RID OF ME album and six non-album tracks (several of which had previously appeared as B-sides toUK singles), 4-TRACK DEMOS is as basic and stripped-down as you can get. These tracks feature nothing more than Harvey's slash-and-burn guitar playing and her brittle voice, which ranges from a twistedly seductive whisper to full-on anguished screams. By no means an easy listen, the songs here are frequently uncomfortably personal sounding, and often trade on the blackest kind of humor. The standouts on this collection include "50ft Queenie," delivered in an especially frenzied version featuring overdriven and distorted guitars, and "Rub 'Til it Bleeds," whose already tortured sound is further amplified by Harvey's edgy vocal, which veers from pleading to sarcastic, often within the same word. "M-Bike" is an early indication of the heavily blues-influenced tone of Harvey's later material. SKU: 1005583

Another Day At The Orifice
Wanna see our Baby? Here she is, all wrapped up fuzzy-like, warm, and ready for love. She's a beautiful Baby, too-mammoth-like in tongue and groove. She's got the best sonic genetics money can buy-a little bit jazz, '50s meets '90s in a jive-shuckin' meltdown. She don't mean a thing if she ain't got swing, which she's got in spades. "I'm Not Joking," sets lady's pipes a-crooning, synths dissipating into the clouds like a Marlboro's smoke, and the pitter-patter of tiny feet-drums with their best two forward. ANOTHER DAY AT THE ORIFICE is the offspring of Blissenden and Burdall-that's us, proud parents of this spunky little audio tot. This kiddo's going places. She's so mighty, meaty, big, and bouncy. She's quite the multi-talent, too, doing the Tangerine Dream funky thang with all sorts of spiky gee-tars and percolating synths ("Narrow") and breakin' it with ping pong beats caught in silky, electronic ooze, sporting a virtual reality of disco-ball sounds ("Thighwig"). We think we'll keep this one, and her soft, jazz-funkified techno moxie, aroundforever. And if you're smart, you'll get one just like her, too. SKU: 4125889
