Holy Diver
Dio: Ronnie James Dio (vocals, keyboards); Vivian Campbell (guitar); Jimmy Bain (keyboards, bass); Vinny Appice (drums). Recorded at Sound City Studios, Los Angeles, California. Despite recording two hit studio albums with Black Sabbath (1980's HEAVEN AND HELL and 1981's THE MOB RULES) and playing throughout the world to huge crowds, Ronnie James Dio left the band in 1982-the year of his final release with Sabbath, the in-concert LIVE EVIL. As soon as the announcement of his departure was made official, Dio began to put together his first solo project. Joining him were former Rainbow bandmate Jimmy Bain on bass, former Sabbath bandmate Vinny Appice on drums, ex-Sweet Savage guitar hero Vivian Campbell, and newcomer Claude Schnell on keyboards. HOLY DIVER, Dio's band debut, was issued in 1983. The album quickly became a favorite among headbangers worldwide and eventually earned the group platinum certification. The somewhat upbeat sounding "Rainbow in the Dark" was an MTV favorite, while the plodding title track proved to be another standout. Other album highlights include the opening anthem "Stand Up and Shout," "Invisible," and "Don't Talk to Strangers." HOLY DIVER proved that Dio's departure from Black Sabbath had not affected his spirits. In fact, he sounds most inspiredhere, aided by his new, hungry backing band. SKU: 1004898

Natural Bridge [Remastered]
Personnel: Bela Fleck (banjo); Mark O'Connor (guitar, 12-string guitar, fiddle, viola); David Parmley (guitar); Jerry Douglas (dobro); Jimmy Gaudreau, David Grisman, Mike Marshall, Buck White (mandolin); Darol Anger (fiddle, violectra); Ricky Skaggs (5-string fiddle, harmony fiddle); Mark Schatz (bass). Includes liner notes by David Grisman. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Prior to dazzling the jazz-fusion scene with his electrified Flecktones, BelaFleck was one of the late 70s/early 80s pioneers of an acoustic fusion of bluegrass, folk, and swinging jazz. Truly a wonderful and daring musician, Fleck first set the bluegrass world on its collective ear with his superb banjo playing, which was as influenced by Charlie Parker as it was by Earl Scruggs. Originally released in 1982, NATURAL BRIDGE lives up to its title--it bridges the worlds between bluegrass, in "Bitter Gap," and Django Reinhardt's bop-charged swing, in "Flexibility" and "October Winds." Often there are exchanges between both styles to the point where it's hard to hear where one starts and the other ends, as with "Crossfire." All the fine players featured here demonstrate amazing technique, warmth and versatility. SKU: 1074373

Complete Science Fiction Sessions, The [Remastered]
THE COMPLETE SCIENCE FICTION SESSIONS contains SCIENCE FICTION (1971) and BROKEN SHADOWS (1971). Personnel includes: OrnetteColeman (alto saxophone, trumpet, violin); Asha Puthli, Webster Armstrong (vocals); David Henderson (spoken vocals); Dewey Redman (tenor saxophone, musette); Bobby Bradford, Carmine Fornarotto, Gerard Schwarz (trumpet); Don Cherry (pocket trumpet); Cedar Walton (piano); Jim Hall (guitar); Charlie Haden (bass); Billy Higgins (drums, timpani); Ed Blackwell (drums). Producer: James Jordan. Compilation producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at Columbia Studio C and Columbia Studio E, New York, New York between September 9, 1971 and September 8, 1972. Includes liner notes by Bob Palmer, Michael Cuscuna and Jame Isaacs. Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). Saxophonist/composer Ornette Coleman was one of the late '50s' pivotal jazz figures. With an approach to jazz that avoided soloing based upon previously established chord patterns, he opened the form up to a whole new world of possibilities. Coleman has also made impressions beyond jazz: Leonard Bernstein was an early champion of his music, and Lou Reed cites him as a major influence. With the exception of the symphonic SKIES OF AMERICA, THE COMPLETE SCIENCE FICTION SESSIONS compiles virtually all Coleman's Columbia output, which was recorded in 1971 and originally issued on two long-unavailable albums, SCIENCE FICTION (1972) and BROKEN SHADOWS (1982). In some ways, this set serves as something of a retrospective, as it features many of the musicians who had played with him in the '50s and '60s. With their dirge-like themes and surging yet unpredictable rhythms, these sessions evoke such Coleman classics as "Lonely Woman" and "Ramblin'.'" The collection also points to Coleman's later work--some of these themes, such as "Happy House" and "School Work," would be reprised in his electric Prime Time bands. As a bonus, three previously unreleased tracks (featuring Cedar Walton and Jim Hall.) are included. SKU: 1032668

Very Best Of Asia, The (Heat Of The Moment 1982-1990)
Full title: The Very Best Of Asia: The Heat Of The Moment (1982-1990). Asia: John Wetton (vocals, bass); Steve Howe (guitar, background vocals); Mandy Meyer, Steve Lukather (guitar); Geoff Downes (keyboards, background vocals); Carl Palmer (drums). Producers: Mike Stone, FrankWolf. Compilation producer: Mike Ragogna. Engineers: Mike Stone, Alan Douglas, Paul Northfield. Recorded between 1982 & 1991. Includes liner notes by Jeremy Holiday & Dave Gallant. Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (Universal Mastering Studios-West). The 18-track Asia best-of compilation, 2000's THE VERY BEST OF ASIA, expands the track listing of their earlier collection, 1990's shorter THEN AND NOW. Only the best tracks from Asia's years on Geffen are spotlighted, such as the pop/prog warhorses "Heat of the Moment," "Only Time Will Tell," "Don't Cry," "Go," "Voice of America," and "Heat Goes On." Compared to Asia's other collections (1990's THEN AND NOW, 1999's ANTHOLOGY), THE VERY BEST OF ASIA is the best of the bunch, as it also features much clearer sonics than the earlier collections. For fans of prog-rock with pop leanings, THE VERY BEST OF ASIA is definitely recommended. SKU: 1042157

Tender Prey
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Nick Cave (vocals, harmonica, piano, Hammond organ, vibraphone, tambourine); Mick Harvey (acoustic & electric guitar, piano, organ, xylophone, bass, drums, percussion, programming, background vocals); Blixa Bargeld (guitar, slide guitar, background vocals); Roland Wolf (guitar, piano, organ); Kid Bongo Powers (guitar, background vocals); Thomas Wydler (drums). Additional personnel: Hugo Race (guitar, background vocals); Gini Ball, Audrey Riley, Chris Tombling (strings); Ian Davis (background vocals). Engineers: Tony Cohen, Flood, Chris Thompson. Recorded at Hansa Tonstudios and Vieklang, Berlin, Germany; Trident and The Strongroom, London, England; The Studio, Richmond, Australia between August 1987 and January 1988. The dark, poetic troubadour tendencies hinted at in Cave's work as early as his first album's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Avalance" blossom on TENDER PREY. In a style recalling Cohen and Tom Waits, Cave ups the lyrical ante considerably here. On gory detail-oriented, literate tunes like "Up Jumped the Devil" and "Mercy," Cave's second life as a novelist (he would soon author a book) is obvious. Here, the distance he achieves from his inner demons allows him to focus more on crafting his personal horror stories, making him seem like the Edgar Allen Poe of the rock world. The balladic approach introduced onthe covers album KICKING AGAINST THE PRICKS also develops here, on melodic, piano-based songs like "Slowly Goes the Night" and "Watching Alice." On these, Cave recalls an earlier, similarly iconoclastic balladeer, Scott Walker. TENDER PREY proved a turning point for Cave, and it's one of his strongest albums. SKU: 1005175

Shouting End Of Life, The
1995's SHOUTING END OF LIFE continues the trend of previous albums like TRAWLER and HOLY BANDITS, balancing the good-timey trad-folk roots of early releases like STEP OUTSIDE with the fiercer and more politicized elements that surfaced on songs like their covers of Nick Lowe's anti-war ballad "The Rose of England" and New Order's more opaque "Love Vigilantes." From the strident solidarity of the anthemic opener "We'll Be There" to an impassioned cover of Richard and Mimi Farina's "Blood Red Roses,"and from the haunting "Don't Slit Your Wrists For Me" to the tender "Our Lady of the Bottles," the Oyster Band weave a musical tapestry of originals and covers--Bruce Cockburn's "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" gets a near-definitive reading--that succeeds in sounding passionate and empathetic where similar albums sound empty and sloganeering. Aqualung (25th Anniversary Edition)
This reissue of AQUALUNG includes a 15-minute interview and 5 bonus tracks. The booklet contains 20 pages of lyrics, photographs and reviews. Jethro Tull: Martin Barre (electric guitar, descant recorder); Ian Anderson (vocals, acoustic guitar, flute); John Evan (piano, organ, Mellotron); Clive Bunker (drums, percussion). Producers: Ian Anderson, Terry Ellis, Bernie Andrews, John Walters. Engineers: Allen Harris, Bob Conduct, Tony Wilson. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-bit technology. The leap from 1970's BENEFIT to the following year's AQUALUNG is one of the most astonishing progressions in rock history. In the space of one album, Tull went from relatively unassuming electrified folk-rock to larger-than-life conceptual rock full of sophisticated compositions and complex, intellectual lyrical constructs. While the leap to full-blown prog-rock wouldn't be taken until a year later on THICKAS A BRICK, the degree to which Tull upped the ante here is remarkable. The lyrical concept here--the hypocrisy of Christianity in England--is stronger than on most other '70s conceptual efforts, but it's ultimately the music that makes it. Tull's winning way with a riff was never so arresting as on the chugging "Locomotive Breath," or the character studies "Cross Eyed Mary" and "Aqualung," which portray believably seedy participants in Ian Anderson's story. The fable imagery of "Mother Goose" and the vitriolic anti-authoritarian sentiments of "Wind Up" both serve notice of Anderson's willful iconoclasm and his disillusionment with the spiritual traditions to which he was born. Varied but cohesive, AQUALUNG is widely regarded as Tull's finest hour. SKU: 1041566

Standing In My Shoes
Guitar aficionadosknow Leo Kottke as an outrageously talented guitar solo player. On STANDING IN MY SHOES, he proves himself to be much more than that. Kottke shows off his skills at unusual composition, musical collaboration and singing, hinting at what an offbeat, laconic storyteller he can be. Most of the songs are instrumentals, with Kottke playing 6- and 12-string guitars, as well as sitar on "World Turning" (written by Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham). "Vaseline Machine Gun" is an example of how varied and innovative Kottke's music can be, with his playing seemingly caught in loops of deeply rhythmic, fantastic rubber-band sounds. The traditional "Corrina, Corrina" shows off his playing at its most delicate, and is made even more poignant by Kottke's bottomless voice. SKU: 1001891

Become You
Indigo Girls: Emily Saliers (vocals, acoustic, electric & 12-string guitars, bouzouki, mandolin); Amy Ray (vocals, acoustic guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, harmonica); Carol Isaacs (penny whistle, recorder, accordion, piano, Wurlitzer piano, Hammond B-3 organ, percussion); Clare Kenny (acoustic & electric basses); Brady Blade (drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: Michelle Malone (vocals, harmonica); Dan Higgins (saxophone). Recorded at Tree Sound Studios, Norcross, Georgia. From their earliest heralded albums in the late '80s, the Indigo Girls have suffused their music with a certain consistency of straightforward yet subtly intricate folk-pop melodies. Also everpresent on their records is a quietly brilliant method of storytelling, hooking listeners in with tales of love and loss. With SHAMING OF THE SUN and COME ON NOW SOCIAL, politics took a seat nearer the front, though not at the expense of emotion. BECOME YOU, Indigo Girls' eighth album, finds the duo running confidently all over the map. "Moment Of Forgiveness" is a simple Bonnie Raitt-ish blues-pop ditty, directly followed by the mournful piano meanderings of "Deconstruction." Things kick into high gear on the rousing title track, which expertly fuses the band's political and personal sides while Amy Ray comes to terms with her Southern roots. Emily Saliers follows with "You've Got to Show," a moody and verdant jazzy song of new love. Things move on in similarly eclectic fashion from there, making for a solid and diverse record. Elixir
Fourplay: Nathan East (vocals, fretless, 5- & 6-string basses); Lee Ritenour (guitar, synthesizer, programming); Harvey Mason (jew's harp, marimba, drums, bongos, congas); Bob James (keyboards, synthesizer, programming). Additional personnel: Phil Collins, Patti Austin, Peabo Bryson (vocals); Ken Freeman, Harvey Mason, Jr. (programming); Heather Mason, Vern Arnold, Cisco (background vocals). ELIXIR was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Performance. Fourplay are the reigning champions of urbane sophistication, bringing a sublime sense of form and interplay to the contemporary jazz genre. Taken as individuals, Bob James, Lee Ritenour, Nathan East and Harvey Mason are among the most persuasive, engaging improviser/arrangers in all of popular music, with scores of hit albums behind them as producers, leaders and sidemen. Taken as a whole, Fourplay elevate the quiet storm aesthetic to a new level, with a deep, slinky groove and an innate sense of the appropriate instrumental color. Consider how the title track sets the tone for the remainder of ELIXIR. Distant keyboard colors swirl about as West and Mason enter with a phat, pliable, bottomless groove. Guitarist Ritenour snakes in and out with latin effects and subtle chords, as keyboardist James essays the theme; the guitar soon returns for the chorus with a darkly articulated, romantic secondary theme. The mentholated instrumental jaunts serve only to deepen the groove, as Mason's crisp backbeat floats up to meet them. The production values on ELIXIR are phenomenal, thanks to the larger than life soundstage of engineer Don Murray. The bottom end is enormous but clear as a bell, every electronic nuance captured with the transparency and detail of an acoustic instrument--listen to the swirling interplay between bass and keyboards, Ritenour's Wes Montgomery-styledsolo lines and octaves, and Mason's propulsive syncopations on the dreamy "Dream Come True," the funkified "Play Lady Play" and the latin R&B swing of "Magic Carpet Ride." Fourplay also take their soulful synthesis of jazz and R&B to the very edge of pop acceptance with some tender ballads. Phil Collins is featured on his own "Why Can't It Wait Until Morning," the super-duo of Peabo Bryson and Patti Austin shine on "The Closer I Get To You," and bassist East takes a couple of engaging vocal turns. For fans of the quiet storm, ELIXIR is irresistable. SKU: 1001641

Songs For The Deaf [PA]
Queens Of The Stone Age: Josh Homme, Nick Oliveri, Dave Grohl, Mark Lanegan. Additional personnel includes: Dean Ween (guitar). Producers: Josh Homme, Eric Valentine, Adam Kasper. Recorded at The Site, San Rafael, California and Barefoot Studios, Hollywood, California. "No One Knows" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Hard Rock Performance. When one speaks of supergroups, alternative rock has seen its share of shining moments, from 1991's Temple Of The Dog to 1995's Mad Season. In 2002, the wheel spun around to Queens Of The Stone Age with SONGS FOR THE DEAF, their bid to save hard rock. While QOTSA founders Nick Oliveri and Josh Homme have often used a variety of players to round out their lineup, having Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) make his return to the drum throne is cause enough to stop the presses. If that weren't enough, add former Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan and you've got all the ingredients for hard-rock greatness. Classic rock fans may recall with fondness the car-radio opening from Kiss' DESTROYER, paid tribute on opening track "Millionare" (SONGS is strung together with a series of similar radio station interludes). The vibe isset with fierce impact; requisite Sabbath-like riffs and T. Rex-from-hell swagger are the weapons of choice. Grohl sounds quite at home behind the drums, leaving double-bass drummers scratching their heads with his single-kick mastery in "First It Giveth." Be it undeniable vocal harmony ("Another Love Song"), balls-out psychedelic rock ("Song For The Dead"), or moody alt-rock grooving ("The Sky Is Falling"), SONGS FOR THE DEAF makes a strong case for rock album of 2002. Ritual De Lo Habitual
Janes Addiction: Perry Farrell (vocals); Dave Navarro (guitar); Eric Avery (bass); Stephen Perkins (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Charlie Bisharat (acoustic & electric violins); John Philip Shenale (strings); Geoff Stradling (piano); Ronnie S. Champagne (bass). Jane's Addiction's RITUAL DE LO HABITUAL, the band's third release, is one of the cornerstones of 1990s alternative rock. The album features the group's popular breakthrough hit "Been Caught Stealing," as well as such genre classics as "Stop!," "Ain't No Right," and "Classic Girl." Also included are the back-to-back epics "Three Days" and "Then She Did," which combine hard-rock, psychedelic, progressive, and alternative music sensibilities. Unfortunately, RITUAL DE LO HABITUAL would prove tobe the band's final album with the original lineup. The members parted ways in 1991 after their last live appearances headlining Lollapalooza, the tour series started by lead singer Perry Farrell. SKU: 1003245

Deserter's Songs
Mercury Rev: Jonathan Donahue (vocals, acoustic guitar, chamberlin); Sean "Grasshopper" Mackowiack (vocals, guitar, woodwinds); Suzanne Thorpe (flute); Dave Fridmann (piano, Mellotron, bass, background vocals); Adam Snyder (Wurlitzer piano, Mellotron, Hammond B-3 organ); Jimmy Chambers (harpsichord, clavinet, drums). Additional personnel: Amy Helm, Marie Spinosa, Mary Gavazzi Fridmann (vocals); Garrett James Uhlenbrock (slide guitar); Rachel Handman (violin); Garth Hudson (alto & tenor saxophones); Matt Jordan (flugelhorn); Jim Burgess (trombone); Aaron Hurwitz (piano); Scott Pettito (acoustic & electric basses); Jeff Mercel, Levon Helm (drums); Joel Eckhouse (bowed saw). Engineers include: Dave Fridmann, Jonathan Donahue, Aaron Hurwitz. A touching, majestic gem of a record, DESERTER'S SONGS raises the bar not just for Mercury Rev themselves, but orchestrated pop in general. There's a timelessness to both the compositions and the arrangements here. Grand sonic visions are realized with horns, keyboards, strings, even a bowed saw! No matter how big the sound gets, though, it's all carefully controlled, and the cinematic scope enhances the songs, rather than obscuring them. Simple--but never blunt--lyrics benefit from an infectious melodicism that speaks to the pop songcraft skills Mercury Rev has mastered. The sweeping scale of DESERTER'S SONGS never denies the small, intimate pleasures that pop up from song to song, as the band combines psychedelia, '60s pop, Flaming Lips-ish indie rock and a homey folk-rock sound (the Band's Garth Hudson and Levon Helm even appear here) for a masterpiece of epic proportions.
