On 1999's THE LONG RIDE, Ramblin' Jack Elliott carried on the age-old tradition of storytelling. Serving as the bridge between Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan, Elliott has managed to garner quite a following of famous friends and fans.Although not as celeb-heavy as 1998's FRIENDS OF MINE, THE LONG RIDE finds quiet a few notable guest appearances.
Produced by bluesman Roy Rogers, (who also plays guitar on a number of songs), this collection finds Elliott covering artists including the Rolling Stones (a peppy "Connection") and Tom Waits (the banjo-heavy "Pony"). Elliott exudes camaraderie throughout, whether he's duetting with old crony Dave Van Ronk ("St. James Infirmary"), jawing away with Tom Russell ("Cup of Coffee," "The Sky Above and the Mud Below"), or sharing the spotlight with young buck Dave Alvin ("East Virginia Blues"). Although Elliott lends an easy-going air to Ernest Tubb's "Take Me Back and Try Me One More Time," it is on a solo reading of Bob Dylan's "With God on Our Side" where this Jewish cowboy transcends his Brooklyn upbringing to take a place alongside his mentor Guthrie.

Hooker was already being hailed as a living legend in the '60s, but by the time of this 1986 release he was a larger-than-life figure, his iconic stature unquestioned. From his earliest collaborations with Canned Heat and on through the '70s and '80s, the rock world never got tired of trying to endear Hooker to a crossover audience. JEALOUS is an attempt to adapt Hooker's lonesome blues to full-band arrangements.
Unlike his band recordings of the '50s, though, there's a decided rock edge to his accompaniment here, providing a sharp contrast to the down-home, earthy sound of Hooker's voice and guitar. Organ, electric guitar, and a forceful rhythm section baked in reverb back Hooker on JEALOUS. Instead of overpowering Hooker, though, these new arrangements place the bluesman on a sonic pedestal, from which he sounds like the voice of God dispensing wisdom through the blues.

One of the most intriguing developments of '90s retro pop culture was the renewed appreciation of '70s funk, particularly as derived from the numerous "blaxploitation" films of the period. One of the most notorious ofthose films, BLACULA was the tale of a black vampire who terrorized his victims to an outrageously funky score. This reissue of the 1972 film's soundtrack, composed and conducted by Gene Page, makes a case for itself as one of the great neglected pieces of funk history. Certainly Page's mix of funky instrumentals, complete with wah-wah guitar and horn stabs, and soulful vocal tunes, was inspired by its more mainstream contemporaries, but it bears a decidedly unique character. You don't have to be a kitsch hound to fall prey to BLACULA's seductive charms.

While other front runners of hard rock/metal like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple began dabbling in other musical forms (folk and string symphonies, respectively), Black Sabbath stuck close to its original direction and was rewarded with several of the most enduring rock releases of all time. Comingoff the worldwide breakthrough of the band's 1971's heavy metal landmark, PARANOID, MASTER OF REALITY (released the same year) proved to be Sabbath's third classic in a row. Like all Sabbath albums of the era, not a second of filler is present--even the lesser-known material is superb.
Like most successful rock bands of the time, Sabbath was indulging in drugs. The album's opening track, "Sweet Leaf" (which contains one of metal's heaviest guitar riffs, courtesy of Tony Iommi), is a salute to one of the band's favorite mind-alterers, marijuana. Another eternal band favorite is the grim post-nuclear war tale "Children of the Grave," while other highlights include the rockers "After Forever," "Lord of This World," and "Into the Void," as well as the more tranquil "Solitude," and the short instrumental Iommi compositions "Embryo" and "Orchid." MASTER OF REALITY remains one of heavy metal's greatest gems.

Parting ways with Depeche Mode in 1995, Alan Wilder found himself free to devote all of his time to Recoil, which he began as a side project back in 1986. UNSOUND METHODS, Recoil's fourth album, continues the expansive, loop-heavy sound of their previous releases, exploring the depths of human depravity with such esteemed guests as spoken word performer Maggie Estep and former Nitzer Ebb vocalist Douglas McCarthy, neither of whom is a stranger to the heart's darker territories. Rounding out the diverse list of guest vocalists are the mournful, seductive Siobhan Lynch and blues belter Hildia Campbell.
Though fans of Depeche Mode will hear familiar strains, such as the flanged pulse of "Control Freak," thesprawling soundscapes of UNSOUND METHODS manage to make that band's darkest moments seem like a walk in the sun. McCarthy does a breathy Martin Sheen impression on the opening track, "Incubus" and portrays an obsessive psychopath on "Stalker," while Estep narrates two tales of primitive lust and psychological betrayal.

While his partner Havoc's strength lays in his production skills (illustrated here on tracks "Live Through It" and "Wanna Be Thugs," on which he's also featured), Prodigy is, without a doubt, lyrically superior. Every verse here highlights his vivid rhyming talent, particularly in the autobiographical "You Can Never Feel My Pain," which details his struggle with sickle cell anemia. The beats are well-arranged and infectious, giving Prodigy the right backdrop to rip, which he does best on the title track "H.N.I.C." and first single "Keep it Thoro."

Being both the writer and the star of FRIDAY has kept Ice Cube extremely busy of late, but with the help of both old school and new school artists, he has also produced one of the finest soundtracks to come down the pike in a long time. Performing the opening title track, Cube has closely aligned his movie with his music, and it's just such knowing collaborations between black filmmakers and the hip-hop community that has made soundtrack albums a prominent means for compiling suave collections of black music.
Dr. Dre, undoubtably West Coast's finest, manages to "Keep Their Heads Ringin'" using his powerful vocals and spectacular G-Funk (with a little help from an old KRS-One sample) to transform any theater seat into the backseat of a jeep. Also along for the ride are fellow west coasters Cypress Hill--exercising their usual themes on "Roll It Up, Light It Up, Smoke It Up"--and their descendents, Funkdoobiest, who bring their ill style to life on "Superheroes." Slowing down the pace is the laid-back groove of Scarface's "Friday Night," complete with the smoothed-out flow of the former Geto Boy.
There is also a sizable amount of old-school funk featured here: the Isley Brothers' "Tryin' To See Another Day," Rick James' "Mary Jane," Rose Royce's "I Wanna Get Next To You." Throwing such tunes into the overall soundtrack mix adds a distinct knowing flavor to the album, and makes it even more obvious that Ice Cube knows what he's up to even when he's not behind the mic.

As influential originators of a revolutionary and oft-copied hybrid of metal and industrial dance music, Fear Factory is one of the few groups that could release an album entitled ARCHETYPE without a hint of self-aggrandizement. The music contained within lives up to the disc's name, but the band also continues to evolve, expanding its sound without makingthe slightest concession to music-industry pressure or prevailing trends.
Despite the absence of guitarist/founding member Dino Cazares (who left the group before this record), Fear Factory sounds tighter and more ferocious than ever, kicking out robotic, skull-crunching grooves with superhuman efficiency. In many places, the group tempers its sonic onslaught with melodic choruses and surprisingly clean guitar effects, occasionally sounding like an unlikely jam between early Depeche Mode and TEST FOR ECHO-era Rush. The album finishes off with a gorgeous ambient instrumental track and a Nirvana cover ("School"), making clear that despite ARCHETYPE's title, Fear Factory will never be content to stick with the original model.

Having now made the transition into a full-blooded band that rocks, Lennox and Stewart could do no wrong and must be seen as one of the musical highlights of the 80s. To maintain such a high standard through six albums in four years takes some doing, yet here they go again, each time growing musically and addingthat little extra, for example, the meaty harmonica opening on "Missionary Man," the harder drum sound on all tracks, and finally Stewart back to playing lots of guitar and sounding as though he is having fun. Since his days with EPMD, Erick Sermon has always been about taking care of business. In 1992, when EPMD suddenly announced that they were breaking up to go solo, hardcore fans had doubts about the life-spans of Erick and Parish's separate projects. Well, Sermon has proven just the opposite, being successful with his solo debut, and now going for DOUBLE OR NOTHING.
His sophomore album boasts the E-Double's well-known lisp and crazy metaphorical rhyming style. On "Bomdigi," he brags about his originality by name-dropping artists on almost every line ("I show like Doug E./And I rock the mic lovely"). His vibe is best felt on the smoothed-out "Do Your Thing," where Erick abandons his similes for straight-up lyrics, and on "Boy Meets World," another "Stay Real," warning fake rappers with a recurring image.
Having been responsible for the funky side of EPMD, Sermon has maintained that image through his solo career. Producing most of this album's tracks himself, Erick is in full funk-lord mode, this time sampling a lot more early hip-hop material and a lot less of the funk pioneers. With support from his newfound hip-hop family, the Def Squad, DOUBLE OR NOTHING is not only full of phat tracks, but is alsoa way of hearing more material from some of hip-hop's most original MCs (Redman, Keith Murray).

If you ever observed (or were) a pale depressed-looking teenager dressed entirely in black, sitting in the corner scribbling frantically into a marble bound notebook, then you already understand the Cure. In the '80s the Cure provided the soundtrack for an entire generation of misfit toys, and if SEVENTEEN SECONDS was a wake-up call for the dispossessed, FAITH is the daily affirmation. Scaled back down to a three-piece with the loss of keyboardist Hartley, the Cure is a lean, mean fighting machine, ready to rumble.
"Rumble" is the best way to describe the propulsive bass playing of Simon Gallup, whose rolling bass anchors both mid-tempo numbers like "The Drowning Man" and faster fare such as "Primary." While no new ground is broken ("Doubt" is basically a rewrite of "Play for Today") FAITH is stunning in its simplicity and haunting beauty, as evidenced by "All Cats Are Grey" and "The Funeral Party." Even Drummer and mascot Lol Tolhurst's minimal beats work to perfection next to the spare but effective instrumentation of "Faith."This is quintessential Cure.
