Technical Ecstasy
Black Sabbath: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Geezer Butler (bass); Bill Ward (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Gerald Woodruffe (keyboards). Recorded at Criteria Studios, Miami, Florida. By the mid-'70s, a number of problems were threatening to break up the original line-up ofBlack Sabbath. The stress brought on by lengthy touring, drug use, and alcoholism had begun to dilute the band's original, influential heavy metal. Sabbath began to drift away from the straight-ahead power rock of such classic albums as PARANOID and SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH, as evidenced by its final two albums to feature singer Ozzy Osbourne, 1976's TECHNICAL ECSTASY and 1978's NEVER SAY DIE. However, TECHNICAL ECSTASY does contain some intriguing, overlooked tracks. The best known song of the bunch is the album-closing rocker "Dirty Women," which explores the topic of prostitution, and was later featured on the original line-up's 1998 live album, REUNION. Drummer Bill Ward sings his one and only song with the band, "It's Alright," which is amongst Sabbath's most pop-friendly compositions ever. Also featured is the pacing album opener "Back Street Kids," the heavy blues and funk of "All Moving Parts (Stand Still)," and the somewhat predictable "Rock n' Roll Doctor." Osbourne would grow disillusioned with the band and would leave after the completion of TECHNICAL ECSTASY's subsequent tour, but would eventually return for one final album and road jaunt. Reachin' (A New Refutation Of Time And Space)
Digable Planets: Butterfly, Doodle, Ladybug. Additional personnel: Scientific Homiez (programming). Producers: Butterfly, Shane "The Doctor" Faber, Mike Mangini. Recorded at the Sound Doctor Studio, North Bergen, New Jersey. Digable Planets were nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Best New Artist." "Rebirth Of Slick" won the 1994 Grammy Award for "Rap Duo Or Group." In 1993, Digable Planets redefined the potential of hip-hop with thistruly refreshing and unique groove opus. Claiming themselves heirs to the "brothers from outer space" mantel adopted by Sun Ra and such acts as Parliament/Funkadelic before them, the Planets serve up a psychedelicised jazz/hip-hop concoction over which Doodlebug, Ladybug, and Butterfly roll their sophisticated, mellifluous rhymes. While jazz sampling had already reared its head in hip-hop, the Planets were the first to make it an aesthetic. Disembodied snippets of Sonny Rollins (on "Time and Space"), Art Blakey (on "Cool Like Dat," the record's hit single), and others float in and out, merging seamlessly with the smooth beats and bass, while the copious use of echo further heightens the disc's individual sound. Themes tend toward transcendence and mind expansion, as the subtitle of the album ("A New Refutation Of Time And Space") and the numerous references to chemical recreation ("Nickel Bags" is one of the highlights here) would indicate. With the overwhelming popularity of gangsta and hardcore street rap, REACHIN' only made a minor splash. But in no way does that diminish the creativity and remarkable appeal of this record. Frogstomp
Silverchair: Daniel Johns (vocals, guitar); Chris Joannou (bass); Ben Gillies (drums). Forget the fact that two-thirds of Silverchair will be in their teens 'til the year 2000; the band's debut, FROGSTOMP, spills with full-throttled guitar angst worthy of bands twice their age. Having won a record contract through a contest in their hometown of Newcastle, Australia, the band recorded FROGSTOMP in less than two weeks, and the album entered the Australian charts at number one, a down-under first. It's easy to see why: gripping guitar structures, reminiscent of hard-rock antecedents from Black Sabbath to Dinosaur Jr., support howled vignettes of adolescent frustration. "Leave Me Out"has the same head-nodding lurch as the best Sabbath riffs, and song titles like "Suicidal Dream," "Pure Massacre" and "Madman" bring the whole freak-out theme home. "Cicada" drives the youth point further, with singer/guitarist Daniel Johns realizing that "growing old is like a Civil War." Silverchair has done its homework well. FROGSTOMP is an aggresive debut for a band that makes up for their lack of age with impressive musical chops. SKU: 1006519

Now
Personnel: John Patitucci (acoustic & electric basses); Michael Brecker, Chris Potter (tenor saxophone); John Scofield (guitar); Bill Stewart (drums). Recorded at Sound On Sound Studios, New York, New York on January 14-17, 1998. Includes liner notes by Larry Blumenfeld. Bass virtuoso John Patitucci is always in great demand. His long stint with Chick Corea's famed Elektric Band as well as "most favored bassist" status with scores ofother major artists has kept him busy. Its Patitucci's solo albums, however, that give us an insight into this bass man's true inner workings. Favoring his acoustic upright more often than his 6-string electric, NOW is certainly Patitucci's most mainstream solo effort after many albums of mostly electric jazz or Brazilian-flavored outings. Joining Patitucci is a distinguished group of cohorts. Master guitarist John Scofield and journeyman tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker once again turn in stellar performances on Patitucci's behalf. The powerful young saxophonist Chris Potter and monster drummer Bill Stewart round out this amazing cast. An accomplished and sensitive composer, Patitucci has composed all but two of the tracks here. Also included are McCoy Tyner's "Search For Peace" and a fascinating conversation between the leader and Stewart on Coltrane's "Giant Steps." Patitucci's closing solo performance on the ballad "Miya" is no less than otherworldly. SKU: 1009125

Big Band Bossa Nova (The Newest Latin American Rhythm)
Personnel includes: Quincy Jones (conductor); Phil Woods (alto saxophone); Paul Gonsalves (tenor saxophone); Clark Terry (trumpet, flugelhorn); Roland Kirk (flute, alto flute); Jerome Richardson (flute, alto flute, woodwinds); Lalo Schifrin (piano); Jim Hall (guitar); Chris White (bass); Rudy Collins (drums); Jack Del Rio, Carlos Gomez, Jose Paula (percussion). Producer: Quincy Jones. Reissue producer: Jerry Rappaport. Recorded at A&R Studios, New York, New York on September 4, 7, 8, 13, 1962. Includes liner notes by Gene Lees. Digitally remastered using 22-bit technology by Kevin Reeves (Polygram Studios). This is part of Verve's By Request series. Quincy Jones's 1962 Brazilian jazz classic is back in print after many years, due no doubt to "Soul Bossa Nova"'s inclusionon the AUSTIN POWERS soundtrack. In addition to that show-stealer, BIG BAND BOSSA NOVA delivers Jones's takes on several samba classics, including "Desifinado" and the timeless classic, "One Note Samba." Jones teams up with Lalo Schiffrin on "Lalo Bossa Nova," and even takes on Charles Mingus's "Boogie Stop Shuffle." "A Taste of Honey" and on "On the Street Where You Live" are where Jones's talent for creative arranging really shines through. Jones's attention to detail adds a subtlety to these recordings which makes them stand out as among the 1960s' best jazz records. BIG BAND BOSSA NOVA still holds its ground nearly some four decades later as a superlative recording. SKU: 1001193

Back In The USA
MC 5: Fred "Sonic" Smith (vocals, guitar); Rob Tyner (vocals); Wayne Kramer (guitar); Michael Davis (bass); Dennis Thompson (drums). Additional personnel: Danny Jordan (keyboards). Recorded at GM Studios, East Detroit, Michigan. Originally released on Atlantic (8247). Includes liner notes by Dave Marsh. Since it wasimpossible to top the in-concert exuberance of their debut, KICK OUT THE JAMS, the MC5 re-emerged with a more refined sound for their sophomore effort, 1970's BACK IN THE U.S.A. (their first studio record). The music is comparable to other Detroit proto-punk rockers of the same era (the Stooges, Alice Cooper, etc.). As with the aforementioned peers, raw garage rock serves as the main ingredient for most of BACK IN THE U.S.A. Producer Jon Landau may have lessened the volatility of the MC5 as compared to JAMS, but the band was equipped with another great set of songs. Two covers bookend BACK IN THE U.S.A.--an uptempo reading of Little Richard's rock & roll standard "Tutti Frutti" kicks things off in fine fashion, while the album-closing title track was originally done by Chuck Berry. The original material ranges from the abstract ("The Human Being Lawnmower") to more traditional rock & roll ("Shakin' Street") to the heartfelt soul ballad "Let Me Try," a surprise highlight. Other standout rockers include "Tonight," "Teenage Lust," "High School," "Call Me Animal," and the politically-charged "The American Ruse." BACK IN THE U.S.A. may have been the MC5's most conventional album, but it's still a classic. SKU: 3101289

Aix Em Klemm
Aix Em Klemm: Adam Wiltzie, Bobby Donne. The self-titled debut from the duo Aix Em Klemm represents an ambient music summit meeting of sorts between Stars Of The Lid's Adam Wiltzie and Labradford's Bobby Donne. Appropriately, this disc draws from both the ephemeral abstractions of Stars Of The Lid and the atmospheric but structured sound portraits of Labradford. Supported by flowing sheets of electronics, heavily processed guitars, and the occasional vocal mumble, these tracks unfold at their own glacial pace, like the opposite of time-lapse photography. If they were played at twice the normal speed you'd hear the borders of the songs being erected, but as it is the listener must make do with hints and suggestions of conventional structure. But when ambient soundscapes are applied with as much skill as these, hazy intimations oftraditional sonic architecture are more than enough. SKU: 1057161

Crazy Nights [Remastered]
Kiss: Paul Stanley (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Bruce Kulick (guitar); Gene Simmons (bass); Eric Carr (drums). Additional personnel: Phil Ashley (keyboards); Tom Kelly (background vocals). Recorded at One On One Recording, North Hollywood, California; Rumbo Recorders, Canoga Park, California; Can-Am Recorders, Tarzana, California. Includes liner notes by Robert V. Conte. Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sterling Sound, New York, New York). Reaching a pop apex not seen since 1980's UNMASKED, Kiss enlisted the production and engineering talents of Ron Nevison (Ozzy Osbourne, Heart) to help the band compete with the light metal faire that existed in 1987. The results are impressive, as the melodic crunch of CRAZY NIGHTS holds up to the band's previous classics. "Crazy Crazy Nights" is an anthemic single that reached U.K. #4 and was their biggest single there. "Reason To Live" is one of Kiss' more tender balladsfeaturing standout vocals by Paul Stanley. Using prolific songwriters such as Diane Warren ("Turn On The Night") and Desmond Child ("Bang Bang You", "Reason To Live") to help achieve their goal, Kiss delivers accessible, chart friendly tunes that you can rock to. The record is melodic, with keyboards throughout. CRAZY NIGHTS is proof that Kiss could stay current with the competitive music scene as well as staying true to themselves. There are rockers and ballads that comprise a well crafted album by a legendary band. SKU: 1004284

1000 Volts Of Holt
Includes liner notes by Noel "Harry" Hawks. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Generally regarded as archetypal reggae of the early 1970s, especially among European aficionados, in retrospect 1000 VOLTS OF HOLT's tracks play like reggeafied covers of MOR pop hits. This is notnecessarily a bad thing. Not many artists could interpolate the Beatles "Let It Be" into Lobo's "I'd Love You to Want Me" or reinvent "The Girl from Ipanema" with a one-drop the way Holt does. While the VOLTS OF HOLT collections are generally regarded as pop-reggae classics, the material that Sanctuary and Trojan have chosen to add to the CD reissue is really what tells the story. Both the "Jamaican Mixes" (a bit harder and leaner than the European ones) and especially the bonus best-of disc that led up to this collection are illuminating. That disc chronicles five very heady years of growth, from one voice among three in Holt's early sides with the Paragons (like the original "The Tide Is High" and the classic "Wear You to the Ball") through the sorts of reggae/soul covers ("Sister Big Stuff") that peaked with the VOLTS OF HOLT albums, documenting not just Holt's personal ascension, but the tumultuous changes in reggae as well. Berserker
All tracks have been digitally remastered. Free of his contract with Beggar's Banquet Records after his previous two records, 1982's DANCE and 1983's WARRIORS, had sold only to a small but devoted cult, Gary Numan formed his own label, Numa Records, and released the first of many DIY indie efforts. Many fans consider BERSERKER the beginning of Numan's most fruitful artistic period, an era where the synthesist/guitarist was able to record his own music without interference. Musically, the album builds onthe Kraftwerk-like electronic sheen of his last few albums. Similarly, the title track, "The God Film" and "My Dying Machine" continue Numan's lyrical preoccupation with the bleak, dystopian works of authors J.G. Ballard and Phillip K. Dick. The biggest surprise is "A Child With The Ghost," an uncommonly heartfelt farewell to ex-Tubeway Army bandmate Paul Gardiner, recently dead of a drug overdose, that's probably Numan's most emotional song. This reissue contains four bonus tracks. SKU: 4124612

Jerry Wexler, Tommy Dowd, and Arif Mardin enlisted the Sweet Inspirations and the best Memphis session boys for vocal support. Dusty's selection of material is exemplary, choosing songs by Randy Newman, Mann/Weill, Goffin/King, and Bacharach/David. This should have made her an international megastar; instead it scraped the US Top 100, failed to chart in the UK, andstarted her slow decline. It is a faultless record on which we have, thankfully, now recognized she was far too ahead of her time for her own good. SKU: 1076487

Producers: Earthtone III,Organized Noize, Carl Mo. Engineers include: John Frye, Neal H. Pogue, Kevin Parker. Principally recorded at Stankonia Recording, Atlanta, Georgia. STANKONIA won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "Ms. Jackson" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group. The Atlanta-based critically acclaimed duo of Big Boi and Dre returns with yet another innovative contribution to hip-hop. STANKONIA, an album borrowing its title from the group-owned recording studio, continues Outkast's tradition of delivering groundbreaking music. The two MCs cover topics that only they would rap about, over self-produced tracks that only they could make. Songs like "B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)" are in contrast to the current hip-hop scene, with its bass music background, while "Ms. Jackson," a dedication to a baby's momma's momma, sports a soulful melody in the tradition of Outkast's previous efforts. Either way, Outkast still proves to be in its own elite class. SKU: 1048712

Soundtrack To A Generation
If the title SOUNDTRACK TO A GENERATION sounds a little over the top to you, then obviously you weren't a teenager in England in the early '80s, when the Human League's snarky/frisky synth-pop was inescapable. To its credit, though, this 14-track compilation doesn't focus on the usual suspects. Instead of "Love Action," we have its dubbed-out doppelganger "Hard Times." Rather than "Don't You Want Me," say hello to the canny in-joke answer song "Don't You KnowI Want You." It also saves listeners from having to hunt down the ELECTRIC DREAMS soundtrack to get Phil Oakey's sublime solo hit "Together In Electric Dreams" and collects the handful of good songs from the disappointing synth-funk experiment CRASH. Early singles like "Empire State Human" sound odd compared to the poppier later work, but they're excellent early electro-pop. A surprising and satisfying collection. SKU: 1003912

Frantic
Personnel includes: Bryan Ferry (vocals, harmonica, keyboards); David Williams (guitar, bass); Dave Stewart, Chris Spedding, Adam Lamprell (guitar); Lucy Wilkins, Natalia Bonner, Lucy Theo, Rosie Wetters (strings); Keith Thompson (recorder, crumhorn, curtal); Colin Good (piano, virginal); Brian Eno (keyboards, background vocals); Paul Taylor, Terry Disley (keyboards); Zev Katz (bass); Paul Thompson, Andy Newmark, Bobby Irwin (drums); Sarah Brown, Audrey Wheeler, Stevie De Granville, Nicole Blumberg (background vocals). Producers include: Rhett Davies, Bryan Ferry, Colin Good, Robin Trower, Dave Stewart. Recorded at RAK Studios and Studio One, London, England. Fresh off the 2001 Roxy Music reunion tour, lounge lizard extraordinaire Bryan Ferry offers his eleventh solo outing, the guitar-driven FRANTIC. Aiding Ferry on this surprisingly lively, not un-Roxy-sounding outing is an impressive array of sideman including English guitar hero Chris Spedding, former bandmate Brian Eno, Eurythmic Dave Stewart, and Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood. Helmed by AVALON producer Rhett Davies, this rich-sounding disc benefits from Ferry's penchant for unconventional covers. These range from a pair of stellar Dylan ventures (the rollicking "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" and the piano-driven "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right") to a Leadbelly classic featuring accompaniment by Cajun musicians ("Goodnight Irene"). Equally impressive are Ferry originalsm including his swirling tribute to Marilyn Monroe ("Goddess of Love"), an ethereal tale of romantic woe ("Fool For Love"), and a touch of futurism influenced by French cinema and packed with swooshing synths and airy female vocals ("Hiroshima"). Most excitingis "I Thought," a laid-back Eno/Ferry collaboration that uses a lush bed of keyboards and casually strummed guitar to steadily build up into a righteous closing cut. SKU: 1070793

Better Live Than Dead
The Sex Pistols: Johnny Rotten (vocals); Steve Jones (guitar); Glen Matlock (bass); Paul Cook (drums). Includes liner notes by Gavin Martin. Amidst the slew of posthumous releases crowding the Pistols' catalog, BETTER LIVE THAN DEAD proves the perfect companion for NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS, IT'S THESEX PISTOLS. This lo-fi but solid recording of a Sex Pistols show of indeterminate origin is mercifully pre-Sid, so original bassist Glen Matlock supplies actual bass lines. The Pistols' performance is surprisingly tight, given their relative inexperience. In an effort to beef up their set, the band covered an interesting range of artists including the Who ("Substitute"), The Stooges ("No Fun") and The Monkees ("Stepping Stone"). Also included are eventual anthems such as "Pretty Vacant" and "Anarchy in The U.K.," reflecting the band's disgust with the status quo. In a legacy based around one album, this release reinforces the Sex Pistols' crucial place in a brief but important phase of popular music. SKU: 1040213

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Wilco: Jeff Tweedy (vocals, guitar); John Stirratt, Leroy Bach, Glenn Kotche, Jay Bennett. Additional personnel: Craig Christiansen, Ken Coomer, Jessy Greene, Fred Lonborg-Holm, Jim O'Rourke. Recorded at The Loft, CRC, and Soma E.M.S., Chicago, Illinois. Far too much attention has been focused on this album's tortured history; band makes weird album, label rejects it, band buys it back and puts it out a year later through another arm of the same corporation. For the record, wildly overexcited Radiohead comparisons aside, the album's not that weird--it merely ventures a bit further down the sonic-shambles roads explored on the band's previous two releases. As has been noted elsewhere, the most valid reference point for the occasional pop deconstructions of YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT is Big Star's THIRD/SISTER LOVERS, not Thom Yorke and company. The most significant factor in this nominal weird-out is the presence of producer Jim O'Rourke, whose avant-rock tendencies loom large here. Nevertheless, beneath the layers of warped keyboards and slow-death guitars, Wilco mastermind Jeff Tweedy has loaded the album with catchy (yes, catchy) tunes that mix the pure power-pop of mid-period Beach Boysand the aforementioned Big Star with the rootsy background of Tweedy's former group Uncle Tupelo and an unmistakable streak of singer-songwriter melancholy. Don't be scared away by ridiculous assessments of this as a "difficult" album; any Wilco fan may enter this hotel without trepidation. SKU: 1071493

In Flight
Personnel: George Benson (vocals, guitar); Jorge Dalto (piano, Clavinet); Ronnie Foster (electric piano, mini-moog); Phil Upchurch (guitar, bass); Stanley Banks (bass); Harvey Mason (drums); Ralph MacDonald (percussion). Recorded at Capitol Records, Hollywood, California from August-November, 1976. This follow up to Benson's first cross-over success, BREEZIN', is Benson and producer Tommy LiPuma's effort to cement the guitarist/vocalist firmly in the public's mind as a pop artist. The disco-flavored music on this 1977 recording appropriately reflects the year in which was recorded, and while it may bring back memories for some listeners, it will soundout of date to others. Benson gives the world his take on several pop hits, including Stevie Wonder's "Nature Boy" and Donny Hathaways's "Valdez in the Country," as well as the album's highlight, "The World is a Ghetto." The instrumental tracks are marked with Benson's famous scatting. Phil Upchurch and Harvey Mason contribute to Benson's quality back-up band. SKU: 1009366

Tuesday Night Music Club
Personnel: Sheryl Crow (vocals, guitar, piano, Hammond organ); Bill Bottrell, David Baerwald (guitar); Wendell Crow (trumpet); David Ricketts, Dan Schwartz (bass); Kevin Gilbert, Brian Macleod (drums). Recorded at Toad Hall, Pasadena, California. "All I Wanna Do" won 1995 Grammy Awards for Record Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female; and Sheryl Crow won the Grammy for Best New Artist. "All I Wanna Do" was also nominated for Song Of The Year. With her gruff, edgy delivery and sweet, seductive timbre, singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow evokes comparisons to tough yet tender blues-rockers like Bonnie Raitt, Lou Ann Barton and Angela Strehli. But Sheryl Crow is too talented to be plugged into any one stylistic bag. TUESDAY NIGHT MUSIC CLUB is a striking debut recording, teeming with the kind of musical curiosity all too rare in contemporary pop--all animated by Crow's remarkable storytelling skills. From the Beatles overtones of her freedom cry "Run Baby Run" to thesweet pedal-steel inflected gospel of "I Shall Believe," Sheryl Crow brings a post-modern country sensibility to bear on her material (as in the touching "No One Said It Would Be Easy"), more often as a flavor in the stew than as the primary ingredient (like her hit single "All I Wanna Do," which evokes the country cum blue strains of Maria "Midnight At The Oasis" Muldaur). As for her narrative stylings, on "Leaving Las Vegas" she mixes her metaphors to equate relationships to games of chance, tolling themes of duty and resignation that also resonate throughout the jazzy "We Do What We Can." Her characters are up and down, but as the surreal "The Na-Na Song" and the smarmy "What I Can Do For You" make clear, you can confront evil and walk away, to rise again another day. SKU: 1011530
