Lamb (Debut Album)
Lamb: Andy Barlow, Louise Rhodes. Additional personnel: Steve Christian (guitar); The Cheinksaw Sisters (cello); Graham Massey (vibraphone); Paddy Steer, Dan Thorne (acoustic bass). Louise Rhodes' acrobatic little-girl-lost voice and Lamb's sparse background atmospheres dare you to make the inevitable Portishead comparison. It's a mean and dirty trick, though. Scratch the surface and you'll find that Rhodes and instrumental maestro Andrew Barlow have little in common with Bristol's noir-chic contingent. LAMB carves out a strange space for the Manchester duo between the hectic breakbeat bluster of drum n' bass and the jazz-and-blues-inflected chamber folk of Joni Mitchell and John Martyn. Lamb's points of reference are strange but wonderful. Rhodes' delivery combines the traits of a torch singer, an R&B siren, and an acoustic singer/songwriter into a ravishing and complex vocal identity. The very Mitchell-esque "Zero" shivers, bare and beatific, within a minimalist arrangement of cello and electronics. Bounding basslines wrap "God Bless" in the lithe contours of jazz. Vibes serve the same purpose on the frosty"Gold," while blazing trumpet insinuations graze "Closer" and "Merge." Postmodern Classical titan Henryk Gorecki is cited and name-checked in Lamb's staggeringly beautiful extrapolation of the composer's SYMPHONY, NO. 3, OP 36. "Lusty," "Closer," and "Cotton Wool" provide the hyperkinetic drum n' bass rudiments that Fila Brazillia's superlative remix of the latter (an unlisted bonus track) inflates a thousand-fold. Ego Opinion Art And Commerce
Full title: What I Learned About Ego, Opinion, Art & Commerce. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Goo Goo Dolls: Johnny Rzeznik (vocals, guitar); Robbie Takac (vocals, bass); Mike Malinin (drums). Producers: Armand John Petri, Rob Cavallo, Gavin MacKillop, Lou Giordano, Goo Goo Dolls. Engineers include: Mike Sak, Allen Sides, A.J. Petri. Its musical merits notwithstanding, this best-of compilation may just be the first of its kind in that the songs are arranged in reverse chronological order, beginning with the most recent (in this case "Bulletproof," from 1998's DIZZY UP THE GIRL). In any case, this aural document of the Doll's 15-year recording career (interesting historical perspective: that's twice as long as the Beatles) is an all but perfect snapshot of their ability to combine pop hooks, punk guitars, and blue-collar angst into one passionate, accessible package. The collection itself is impeccably crafted. The song selection is just about ideal (although fans may bemoan the absence of "Long Way Down," from A BOY NAMED GOO). Nearly everything has been remixed (which means the older songs have more or less the same aural sheen as the more expensively produced recent material) and there's a particularly nice bonus in a way-overdue studio version of long-time concert favorite "Two Days inFebruary." If you're just discovering these guys, this is a great place to start. SKU: 1073166

War On Errorism [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Enhancements include political information, a trailer for the film UNPRECEDENTED and animated NOFX videos. NOFX: Fatty (vocals, ebow, keyboards, bass); El Hefe (vocals, horns); Melvin (guitar, background vocals); Smelly (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Spike Slawson, Karina Denike (vocals); Joel Lova, Mattias Koski, Scarlett Costello, Conor (spoken vocals); Sascha Lazor (guitar); Jason Freese (saxophone); Dude from the Caddies (trombone); Ronnie King, The Mod (keyboards); Karina Denike (vibraphone). Includes liner notes by Far Mike Smelly, Melvin El Hefe. Obviously, NOFX are one of the standard-bearers of the West Coast skate-punk sound. Still, a band that sticks around as long as they have will eventually mature, no matter the genre, and THE WAR ON ERRORISM is where NOFX blossoms into adulthood. That's not to say they've lost their sense of humor, punk energy, or passion for embodying and detailing their milieu. It's just that they've expanded; you can hear it in the music, as a fuller, more pop-conscious production kicks in and everything from a horn section to a vibraphone makes an appearance. You can also hear it in the lyrics, which (in line with the Bush-bashing coverart) rise to the challenge of the post-9/11 world by adding a new degree of sociopolitical comment. Don't worry, skate kids, the band can still kick it. SKU: 1083328

Big Science
Personnel: Laurie Anderson (vocals, violin, keyboards, electronics, marimba, percussion); Perry Hoberman (flute, piccolo, saxophone, bottles); Richard Cohen (clarinet, bassoon, baritone saxophone); Peter Gordon (clarinet, tenor saxophone); Bill Obrecht, Chuck Fisher (alto & tenor saxophones); George Lewis (trombone); Roma Baran (accordion, keyboards, percussion); David Van Tieghem (marimba, drums, percussion). Recorded at The Lobby, New York, New York; The Hit Factory, New York, New York; Skyline Studios, New York, New York; Sorcerer Sound, New York, New York. With BIG SCIENCE, avant-garde sculptor Laurie Anderson made the big leap from fringe performance artist to commercial success. Originally creating music to embellish her artwork, Laurie soon moved on to creating the music for its own sake, providing a new sound comprised of electronics, voice enhancers, and humorous vignettes. Totally original for 1982, BIG SCIENCE stands up to the test of time, still sounding like an innovative mark of creativity. From "This is your Captain speaking...," the opening lines of "From The Air," Laurie stands firmly in charge, piloting through an idiosyncratic and iconoclastic sonic experiment. The title track is an electronic dirge, exotic and technical--a futuristic ballad. "Sweaters" is a Middle Eastern kiss-off ("I no longer love the color of your sweaters..."), with the curious instrumentation of bagpipes, violin and drums. The unlikely hit "O Superman," with itsrepeated, hyperventilating "ah"s and spooky comical text, sets the tone--especially when Anderson asks to be held with "electronic arms." The acoustic, international grab-bag of "Example #22" provides one of the funnier lines on an album of countless, clever gems: "Honey you're my one and only/So pay me what you owe me." She also credits several paranormals for their work on the track. BIG SCIENCE is a collection of mesmerizing songs featuring quirky, heady poetry and wonderfully peculiar instrumentation (particularly Anderson's violin, which has a tape-equiped bow that draws against a recording head built into its body). It is an album of distinctive electronic mood music that helped change the landscape of alternative pop music. SKU: 5047432

Crucial Roots Classics
Personnel: Bunny Wailer (vocals, percussion); Dwight Pickney, Earl "Chinna" Smith, D. Bryan, E. Ranglin, Eric "Bingy Bunny" Lamont (guitar); Tommy McCook, Bobby Ellis, Deadly Headly Bennett, Dean Fraser, Nambo Robinson (horns); Anthony "Steely" Johnson, Earl "Wia" Lindo, Keith Stirling, B. Kalphat, Gladstone Anderson (keyboards); Errol "Flabba" Carter, Robbie Shakespeare (bass); Lincoln "Style" Scott, Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, E. Carter (drums); "Sticky" Thompson (percussion). Includes liner notes by Roger Steffens. CRUCIAL! ROOTS CLASSICS won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. Bunny Wailer, born Neville Livingston, was the most overlooked member of the original Wailers, but while Bob Marley and Peter Tosh might have garnered more acclaim, it was Bunny's high, sweet voice that gave the trio's harmonies their power, and his thoughtful, understated songwriting often matched Marley and Tosh's best work. An unfailingly positive and uplifting songwriter (tracks like "Unity"and "Struggle" have the emotive power of the best gospel), Bunny Wailer is also a standout singer and a canny producer, able to give these tracks both the necessary bass throb of the best roots reggae and a fleet lightness of tone that makes plain reggae's essential links to American R&B. This aptly-titled compilation of solo recordings from perhaps the most productive and artistically satisfying period of Bunny's career, the late '70s and early '80s, is both a perfect introduction to the man's work and a standout collection of classic roots reggae. Red Hot Chili Peppers [PA] [Remastered]
Red Hot Chili Peppers: Anthony Keidis (vocals); Jack Sherman (guitar); Flea (bass); Cliff Martinez (drums). Additional personnel: Keith Barry (viola); Kenny Flood (tenor saxophone); Patrick English (trumpet); Phil Ranelin (trombone); Cliff Brooks (timbales, congas); Gwen Dickey (background vocals). Recorded at El Dorado, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Flea. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24 Bit Technology. The Red Hot Chili Peppers' 1984 self-titled debut maynot have been as stellar as future releases would be (UPLIFT MOFO PARTY PLAN, MOTHER'S MILK, etc.), but the band's intoxicating punk-funk proved to be a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stagnant rock scene. Original members Hillel Slovak (guitar) and Jack Irons (drums) bowed out just prior to the recording of the debut (they'd return for the next release, 1985's FREAKY STYLEY), as fill-ins Jack Sherman and Cliff Martinez joined singer Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea. The album-opening "True Men Don't Kill Coyotes" was the band's first video to appear on MTV, while "Get Up and Jump" has proven to be a perennial concert staple. Other highlights include "Green Heaven," "Out in L.A.," and "Police Helicopter." SKU: 1080136

Barry Manilow I [Remastered]
Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot & Ken Perry (KDISC, Los Angeles, California). In 1973, Barry Manilow's debut album presented the boy from Brooklyn as an unlikely pop hero. Emerging from the '70s showbiz shadows (he'd recently worked as Bette Midler's arranger/bandleader) Manilow was every inch the boy next door, with instant appeal to those uncomfortable in the more unkempt world of rock & roll but ready to move beyond Sinatra and Bobby Darin to the next face of American Popular Song. With his sophisticated, piano-based compositions and homey, intimate vocal style, Manilow merged the '70s singer-songwriter aesthetic with the aforementioned pop orientation, making romantic ballads like "Could It Be Magic" into the building blocks for a skyscrapersoon to be dubbed "Adult Contemporary." Led Zeppelin III
Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals); Jimmy Page (electric, acoustic, slide, & pedal steel guitar, banjo, mandolin, background vocals); John Paul Jones (bass, organ, background vocals); John Bonham (drums, percussion). All tracks have been digitally remastered. LED ZEPPELIN III was something of a transitional recording for the band, marking an evolution from their early blues-based origins to the elaborately structured rock suites which would follow. Page's love for country and cajun music, delta blues and traditional folk elements distinguishes "Gallows Pole" and underrated songs like "Tangerine," "That's The Way" and "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" where Robert Plant's vocals begin to take on aheretofore unheard-of tenderness, while the rhythm work of Jones and Bonham reflects many non-rock elements, and Page makes telling use of acoustic string instruments like mandolin, banjo and 12-string guitar (anticipating 1971's triumphant "Stairway To Heaven"). Elsewhere, songs like "Friends" take on a darker, more experimental mood, in the manner of the late Beatles, even as the mysterious "Immigrant Song" finds the band mixing hard rock, dervish rhythms and James Brown in equal measure. And for fans of their first two recordings, there's "Since I've Been Loving You," a low, slow Chicago blues (in the manner of Fleetwood Mac's Peter Green) showcasing the good groove of Jones and Bonham, and Page's masterful lead work. Legendary A&M Sessions, The
Prior to signing with Buddah and recording SAFE AS MILK, Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band had a two single deal with A&M Records in 1965. THE LEGENDARY A&M SESSIONS assembles those two 45s along with a fifth song, the previously unreleased "Here I Am, I Always Am." Clearly indebted to blues and R&B artists such as Howlin' Wolf and Johnny "Guitar" Watson, this southern California band was not alone in their explorations--contemporaries included Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal's Rising Sons and Lowell George's Factory. Beefheart was soon to furtherpersonalize his approach, but these first recordings are an important look at his beginnings. By strange confluence, the sessions were produced by David Gates, later to find fame in the soft-rock band Bread. SKU: 3107820

One Trick Pony (Original Soundtrack/Remastered & Expanded)
Personnel: Paul Simon (vocals, guitar, percussion); Richard Tee (vocals, piano, tambourine); Patti Austin (vocals); Hugh McCracken (acoustic guitar, slide guitar); John Tropea (acoustic guitar); Eric Gale, Hiram Bullock, Jeff Mironov, Joe Beck (electric guitar); Jon Faddis (flugelhorn); Don Grolnick (synthesizer); Tony Levin (bass guitar, background vocals); Anthony Jackson (bass guitar); Steve Gadd (drums); Ralph MacDonald (percussion); Lani Groves (background vocals). Recording information: A&R Studios; The Hit Factory, New York City. The 1980 film ONE TRICK PONY starred and featured the music of Paul Simon, who portrayed a singer-songwriter of considerably less renown than himself. Full of heart, humor and realism, it's one of the best music-oriented dramas extant, and this soundtrack album is equallysubstantial. ONE TRICK PONY marked an important turning point in Simon's artistic development. Though his musical sophistication had grown, previous to this album his lyrical approach was still oriented towards the linear storytelling style he began with in the '60s. Here, Simon began to develop a more poetic, imagistic approach to lyric-writing. While the salsa horn section of the hit "Late In The Evening" foreshadows Simon's later cultural experiments, it's tracks like "Jonah" and "Oh, Marion" that really tell of things to come. In the former, Simon plumbs the biblical metaphor, skillfully interspersing it with more autobiographical-sounding details. On the latter, he uses metaphysical, slightly surreal imagery to tell the story of a man at odds with his own emotions. Both tunes are representative of the great literary leap Simon's writing took with ONE TRICK PONY, an album full of inventively constructed lyrics matched with Simon's usual harmonic sophistication. For Hamp
Personnel: Gary Burton (vibraphone, marimba, xylophone); Russell Malone (guitar); Mulgrew Miller, Makoto Ozone, Danilo Perez (piano); Christian McBride, John Patitucci (bass); Horacio Hernandez, Lewis Nash (drums); Luis Quintero (percussion). Recorded at Avatar Studio C, New York, New York on May 11, 23 & 24, 2000 and at Berklee Recording Studio, Boston, Massachusetts on June 3, 2000. Includes liner notes by Neil Tesser. "Move" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. It is only logical that Gary Burton, the modern master of the vibraphone, should pay tribute to the giants of his instrument in the past. With this set, Burton offers homage to Lionel Hampton (Hamp), Red Norvo, Milt Jackson (Bags), and Cal Tjader by performing and updating their greatest signature tunes. Burton has long been recognized as having culminated all the developments of these past masters into his own virtuoso style. Here he expertly displays these abilities on the very pieces that inspired him along the way. The disc mainly alternates between sophisticated Latin grooves, as in the opening classic "Afro Blue," and traditional swing numbers like Hampton's great "Flying Home." Burton shows the uncanny ability to be both a technical wizard, employing a flurrying barrage of four-mallet technique, and to swing unrelentingly. Cuts like the oldfashioned "Back Home Again In Indiana" and Denzil Best's swinger "Move" exhibits these abilities to the fullest. In the end, the two most intriguing tracks are the ending tributes to Red Norvo, the ragtime "Hole in the Wall" and the impressionistic "Dance of the Octopus," which find Burton performing on xylophone and marimba, respectively. Mercury
American Music Club: Mark Eitzel (vocals); Vudi, BruceKaphan, Daniel Pearson, Tim Mooney. Recorded at Sunset Sound Factory, Hollywood, California on December 11, 1992. AMC toiled in obscurity for years, the group's albums delighting only its cult following and discerning critics. When the band's press got too good to ignore, AMC was snapped up by the majors. AMC's Reprise debut, MERCURY, failed to set the charts afire, but it continued the band's artistic progression in spades. Uber-producer Mitchell Froom makes a significant impact on the sound. The looseness of the band's earlier albums is replaced by painstakingly constructed arrangements that are idiosyncratic enough to match the band's songs, but sophisticated enough to bring the band to a new sonic level. Singer/lyricist Mark Eitzel, never known for his positive outlook, is possibly at his bleakest here, delivering song after song detailing his disappointment, disaffection, and low self-esteem. Fortunately, the masterfully arranged songs are musically varied enough to keep things from getting bogged down. "I've Been a Mess" is something of an AMC theme song, while even Eitzel's songwriting comes under suspicion as he lays his songs down in supplication at "Johnny Mathis' Feet," as the song billows with ironically grandiose keyboards and timpani. After an album full of exotic, angular guitar and keyboard sounds, MERCURY closes with a ragged, tentatively hopeful acoustic ballad "Will You Find Me?" SKU: 1041439

I'm Your Fan (The Songs Of Leonard Cohen)
Leonard Cohen's supremely literate songs will always have a rapt audience among rock and folk's illuminati. In certain circles, Cohen is regarded with the same awe as Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, and a handful of other top '60s songwriters. However, the singer's dry, husky voice and his dirge-like, hypnotic vocal delivery have often confounded even the bravest listener. I'M YOUR FAN--the title is a reference to Cohen's landmark I'M YOUR MAN release of 1988--recruits an interesting, even inspired array of some of rock and pop's most uncompromising talents, presenting Leonard Cohen songs as unabashed pop. REM performa gritty version of "First We Take Manhattan," while, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, a band clearly influenced by Cohen along the way, present an inspired version of "Tower of Song." Other standout selections include Lloyd Cole's beautiful take on "Chelsea Hotel," James' cover of "So Long Marianne," and Ian McCulloch's "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye." SKU: 1000857

Eternal
The Isley Brothers: Ronald "Mr. Biggs" Isley (vocals); Ernie Isley (guitar). Additional personnel includes: Angela Winbush (vocals, keyboards, programming); Steve "Stone" Huff, Jimmy Jam, Terry Louis (various instruments); Raphael Saadiq (guitar, bass, background vocals); Donnie Lyle (guitar, bass); James "Big Jim" Wright (keyboards, background vocals); Kevin Wooten (keyboards); Martgol Beasley, Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Jake & The Phatman, Abel Garibaldi, Ian Mereness, Alex Richbourg (programming); Jill Scott, The Johnson Sisters, Avant (background vocals). Producers include: Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Raphael Saadiq, R. Kelly, Steve "Stone" Huff. Engineers include: Glenn Standridge, Abel Garibaldi, Peter Mokran. "Contagious" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Reduced to siblings Ronald and younger brother Ernie (Rudolph became a minister, O'Kelly passed on in 1986, and Marvin was beset by diabetes), the Isley Brothers' Dreamworks debut is still very much in the vein of past triumphs. Plenty of smooth grooves, songs dealing with the varying facets of romance, and at least one Isleyfied cover (this time out Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now" finds Ronald Isley transforming the MOR standard into a slow jam classic). Resurrecting Mr. Biggs, the larger-than-life playa alter-ego that first surfaced on R. Kelly's 1995 hit "Down Low (Nobody Has To Know)," older sibling Ronald gets to coolly snarl his way through "Contagious," a tale of discovered infidelity featuring Kelly as the other guy. Other notables who pop up are Philly songstress Jill Scott (the simmering duet "Said Enough") and Angela Winbush (the silk-sheet anthem "Warm Summer Night"). Ernie Isley's guitar playing also plays a major role whether it's on the chugging jam "Move Your Body" or the smoldering "Ernie's Jam." Aided by the cream of contemporary R&B, The Isleys continue to prove their relevance after 40-plus years of forgingtrends. SKU: 1064315
