Rainbow Children, The
Personnel: Prince (vocals, various instruments, percussion, sound effects); Najee (soprano saxophone, flute); Hornheadz (horns); Larry Graham, Jr. (bass); John Blackwell (drums); Milenia, Kip Blackshire, Mr. Hayes, Femi Jiya (background vocals). Recorded at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, Minnesota. In the much-anticipated follow-up to 1999's RAVE UN 2 THE JOY FANTASTIC, Prince (who's now reclaimed his name) presents fans with RAINBOWCHILDREN. Dubbed in marketing campaigns as "controversial, " the album suggests a common lyrical theme of a utopian world inhabited by "rainbow children," first introduced in the jazzy benediction of the title track. The musical undercurrent connecting the 14 cuts is a decidedly more laid-back approach compared with past efforts. The interlude "Wedding Feast" may leave some scratching their heads; the vocally theatrical track sounds as if it could be part of a larger concept piece His Royal Badness plans to unveil in the near future. "She Loves Me 4 Me" is all that you would expect from a romantic Prince ballad. No stranger to social commentary, "Family Name" finds the Purple One taking a radical look at race and the hypocrisy of "racial purity." There's no shortage of funk here; especially in "The Everlasting Now" and Prince's most obvious tribute to James Brown, "The Work Pt. 1." More focused than the overflowing sets of EMANCIPATION and CRYSTAL BALL, RAINBOW CHILDREN sets a new standard for what Princeheads can expect in this newest phase of his musical evolution. Willie's Blues
Personnel: Willie Dixon (vocals, bass); Memphis Slim (piano); Wally Richardson (guitar); Al Ashby (tenor saxophone); Gus Johnson (drums). Recorded in Engelwood Cliffs, New Jersey on December 3, 1959. Originally released on Pretige/Bluesville (1003). Includes original liner notes by Dale Wright. Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley). Willie Dixon's first album under his own name is a tasty, if rather curious affair. It was recorded at the dawn of the first great blues revival, before white college kids likethe Rolling Stones started plugging their guitars into amps and emulating Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf. In fact, WILLIE'S BLUES is what those two artists might have sounded like had they been recorded in a jazz setting. The lack of harmonica is unsettling, although Al Ashby's tenor sax fills in manfully, and the sound is eerily clean--one waits in vain for that great Chess Records reverb. All in all, the album is rather more laid back than you might have expected. For want of a better term, it's almost lounge blues, with the notable exceptions of "Slim's Thing," a great boogie woogie workout that gives co-conspirator Memphis Slim a chance to strut his stuff on piano, and a chugging version of Howlin' Wolf's "Built for Comfort." Hall & Oates: Daryl Hall (vocals, mandar, keyboards, vocodor, synthesizer, percussion); John Oates (vocals, guitar, percussion). Additional personnel: G.E. Smith, Jeff Southworth (guitar); Charlie Dechant (saxophone); Ralph Schuckett (organ); Mike Klvana (synthesizer); John Siegler (bass); Jerry Marotta (drums); Chuck Burgi (drums, percussion). Recorded at The Hit Factory and Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York. Hall & Oates: Daryl Hall (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer, vocoder, percussion). Personnel: John Oates (vocals, guitar, percussion). Recording information: The Hit Factory, New York, New York (1980); Electric Lady, New York, New York (1980). Hall and Oates' (sort of) New Wave album, VOICES may not be a timeless classic but it's certainly one of the best pop albums of the early '80s, with nearly every song a tuneful, concise, well-crafted gem. In retrospect, the album's first hit, a cover of the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling,"is actually somewhat misrepresentative; nothing else here is as retro or bombastic. More typical is the opening "How Does It Feel," a big sounding yet spare piece of twelve-string folk rock by way of the REVOLVER-era Beatles. There's also the ebullient pop soul of "Kiss on My List" and the cleverly self-referential neo-'50s street corner harmonizing of "Diddy Doo Wop (I Hear the Voices)." SKU: 6560866

Que Alegria
Personnel: John McLaughlin (acoustic guitar); Dominique Di Piazza, Kai Eckhardt (bass); Trilok Gurtu (percussion). On this 1992 trio album, John McLaughlin fuses together atmospheric music with jazz harmonies,Spanish gypsy guitar stylings, and, of course, blazing chops. Part ethereal, part intense and linear, McLaughlin brings a rich palette of musical colors to his canvas. Trilok Gurtu's smart drumming and Dominique Di Piazza's punchy yet melodic bass playing are high points here. The beautiful bass feature "Marie" and McLaughlin's fast paced "Hijacked" are both standouts, but the album's climax is the cinematic, ever-evolving title track. SKU: 6333849

Have I Offended Someone
Recorded between 1973 and 1985. Includes liner notes by Edward Sanders. This collection celebrates Frank Zappa, the cultural fly-in-the-ointment. It was assembled by the man himself in the last years of his life. The lyrics take on everything from Christians to Jews, and from record company executives to feminists. While raising hackles was often the end result with the dropping of these numbers onto the cultural landscape, Zappa's motivations were to point out hypocrisies and to prick over-inflatedsenses of self-importance. He preferred to separate fashion from true public needs (let's recall that in the '60s Zappa was one of the first to poke fun at the hippie movement, a strata it was perceived he was a part of). The accompanying liner notes are by Ed Sanders, founder of The Fugs and no stranger to controversy himself. He concludes by saying, "... we need a few Frank Zappas each generation to stand up for freedom against the torches." SKU: 1000347

Paper Monsters
This is an Enhanced CD which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Dave Gahan (vocals, harmonica, keyboards, Fender Rhodes piano, glockenspiel); Knox Chandler (guitar, dulcimer, cello, keyboards, vibraphone bass, samples, programming); Antoine Silverman, Maxim Moston, Joan Wasser (violin); David Goul (viola); Jane Scarpantoni (cello); Douglas Petty (piano); Paul Garisto, Victor Indrizzo (drums); Joylon Thomas (tambourine); Dee Lewis (background vocals). Recorded at Electric Lady, New York, New York. 22 years after Depeche Mode's debut, mouthpiece Dave Gahan finally got around to releasing his solo debut in the shape of 2003's PAPER MONSTERS. Having wrestled with more than his share of personal demons during his ascent to stardom, it's no surprise that this Gahan fills the album with echoes of his inner struggle. Working with New York City-based multi-instrumentalist Knox Chandler, the dour vocalist injects enough swirling synths, droning guitars, and oddly arranged strings to approximate a murder-ballad ambiance that brings to mind Nick Cave. This is particularly true on songs like the harrowing "Black and Blue Again" and the subtler, more ambient "Stay." Gahan also manages to flex some of his more rock & roll-inspired muscles, pumping swooning harmonies and glammy guitar into the swaggering opening cut "Dirty Sticky Floors" and blowing some sleazy-sounding harmonica over the gritty stomp of "Bottle Living." With PAPER MONSTERS following quickly on the heels of Martin Gore's equally stellar solo outing COUNTERFEIT 2, Depeche Mode fans were given more than enoughto feast on until the pair got back to their day jobs. Hawk Relaxes, The
Personnel: Coleman Hawkins (tenor saxophone); Ronnell Bright (piano); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Ron Carter (bass); Andrew Cyrille (drums). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on February 28, 1961. Originally released on Moodsville (15). Includes original release liner notes by Joe Goldberg. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Some would contend that THE HAWK RELAXES is largely mood music; it's made up almost entirely of ballads of a similar tempo. However, the quality of the music presented here automatically takes this recording (and all of the musicians) out of the limited realm of mood music. These subtle renderings of songs such as "Under a Blanket of Blue," "More Than You Know," and "Speak Low" feature not only Coleman Hawkins' inimitable thick but never hard-edged sound, but also a youthful Kenny Burrell's refined approach to the electric guitar. In fact, on the entire album, Burrell performs almost inthe role of a horn player. The tenor legend and the guitarist develop quite a rapport over the course of these seven tracks. Don't be fooled by this music; it may be sleepy, but it's filled with some of the most advanced ballad playing jazz has ever fostered. SKU: 1036660

Once More With Feeling (Singles 1996-2004)
Placebo (Pop): Brian Molko, Stefan Olsdal, Steve Hewitt. Additional personnel: David Bowie (vocals). Recording information: 1996 - 2004. This well-compiled retrospective covers the first eight years of the London-based rock trio's career. Placebo combines the sexy, androgynous attitude of glam with the grind of grunge, the razor-edge of punk, and a dash of blissful drone-noise a la Sonic Youth. Through its first four studio albums, Placebo blazed a trail with equal parts flash, guitar-muscle, and keen pop smarts, a mix that sent several of the band's singles up the UK charts. For these reasons, Placebo is especially well suited to a hits collection, and ONCE MORE WITH FEELING is, as a result, the group's best overall offering. Early hits ("Nancy Boy" and "Bruise Pristine") define the band's cross-gender themesand slick, churning sound, while the mid-tempo "Pure Morning" sports an expansive feel and an infectiously catchy melody. "Taste in Men" has a goth-industrial edge, "The Bitter End" recalls 1980s New Wave, and glam godfather David Bowie joins the group for a duet on "Without You I'm Nothing" (an association that has helped the band not a little). But while it's easy to play spot-the-influence with Placebo, the trio has enough panache and songcraft to pull it off effectively, a feat attested to on this impressive 19-song disc. SKU: 6572557

Mad Season [ECD]
This is a Hyper CD which provides a link to the artist's website with the help of an internet browser. Matchbox Twenty: Rob Thomas (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano); Paul Doucette (vocals, acoustic guitar, drums, percussion); Kyle Cook, Adam Gaynor (vocals, guitar); Brian Yale (bass). Additional personnel: Nashville String Machine (strings); Atlanta Brass Society (horns); Tony Adams (drums); Sam Bacco (percussion); Angie Aparo, Peter Stuart (background vocals). Recorded at Tree Sound Studios, Atlanta, Georgia; East Iris & Oceanway Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. MAD SEASON BY MATCHBOX TWENTY was nominated for the 2001 GrammyAward for Best Rock Album and "Bent" was nominated for Best Rock Song. Like it or not, Matchbox Twenty's songs have an uncanny ability to take near-permanent residence in your musical consciousness. Returning with MAD SEASON BY MATCHBOX TWENTY, the band cashes in their 20, perhaps in an effort to avoid getting lumped with other "number bands." Matchbox Twenty is a truly complimentary vehicle for Rob Thomas' pen and voice. An obvious contender for single status, "Crutch" features modern R&B flavored verses and a driving chorus that could easily rival "Smooth" for longevity. "Last Beautiful Girl," with its thick vocal harmonies and dynamic extremes, has Thomas struggling through bittersweet heartbreak. "If You're Gone" makes tasteful use of Chicago-styled horns and orchestration very much in the David Foster production style. Title track "Mad Season" explores insecurity and emotional vulnerability, while in "Rest Stop," a woman musters the courage to end a failing relationship. "The Burn" describes frustration over lack of inspiration, and the breakaway single "Bent" has an '80s essence, with triggered drums and Journey-influenced keyboards. MAD SEASON will surely liberate the band from any lingering opinions that they're just a flash in the pan. SKU: 1069291

Mary Star Of The Sea (+DVD)
Zwan: Billy Corgan (vocals, guitar); David Pajo, Matt Sweeney (guitar); Paz Lechantin (bass); Jimmy Chamberlin (drums). Billy Corgan has emerged from his three-year hiatus following The Smashing Pumpkins' 2000 break-up, with Zwan and their debut, MARY STAR OF THE SEA. Rounding out the group are former Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlain, Slint/Tortoiseguitarist Dave Pajo, Skunk string-slinger Matt Sweeney and bassist from A Perfect Circle, Paz Lenchantin. Corgan does not disappoint as he resurrects the crashing guitars and yowling vocals that ensnared so many young, impressionable post-rock fans. Taking on the moniker of Billy Burke, a Florida evangelist dedicated to "touching the world with God's power," the Chicago native runs a quasi-religious thread through these 14 songs. "Lyric", the thunderous opening cut, includes lyrics about faith. Concluding the journey is the 14-minute plus "Jesus, I/Mary Star of the Sea" which incorporates the hymn "Jesus, I Have Taken Up My Cross." Throughout the album are some truly brilliant moments including the tasty acoustic guitar/harmonica driven "Come With Me," the soaring first single "Honestly" and the equally breathtaking "El Sol." With his legacy as Smashing Pumpkins' major domo secure, Billy Corgan is well on his way to securing his spot in the new millennium with Zwan. SKU: 1079978

Other Voices Too
Full title: Other Voices, Too (A Trip Back To Bountiful). Personnel includes: Nanci Griffith (vocals, acoustic guitar); Tom Rush (vocals, acoustic & slide guitars); Sonny Curtis, Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, Lucinda Williams, Dave Van Ronk, Rodney Crowell (vocals, acoustic guitar); Richard Thompson (vocals, electric guitar); Tom Russell, Ian Tyson, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, John Prine, Matthew Ryan, Glen Philips (vocals); Doug Lancio, Philip Donnelly (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); Pete Kennedy (12-string guitar); Mary Custy, Nollaig Casey (fiddle); Ron De La Vega (cello, bass, background vocals); Sharon Shannon (accordion); Jim Williamson (trumpet); James Hooker (piano, Wurlitzer piano, Hammond B-3 Organ); Pat McInerney (drums); Maura Kennedy, Susan Cowsill (background vocals). Producers: Jim Rooney, Nanci Griffith, Don Gehman. Engineers: Mark Miller, Don Gehman, Brian Masterson, Joe Arlotta, Doug Trantow. Recorded at Jack's Tracks Studio and WoodlandStudio, Nashville, Tennesse; Windmill Lane Studio, Dublin, Ireland; Back Pocket Studio, New York, New York; Scream Studios, Studio City, California. Includes liner notes by Susanna Clark, Jim Rooney & Nanci Griffith. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Griffith followed the success of OTHER VOICES, her tribute to her favorite songwriters, with FLYER, an album focusing on original material. It didn't take her long, though, to begin plowing anew the fertile fields of modern song. OTHER VOICES, TOO finds her tackling tunes by estimable "modern" folk artists such as Richard Thompson, Sandy Denny and Ian Tyson, as well as standards by Woody Guthrie and Stephen Foster. Griffith's vocal partners on OTHER VOICES, TOO are a luminous group as well. Lucinda Williams lends her voice to "Wings of a Dove." John Prine duets with Griffith on "The Streets of Baltimore." Even idiosyncratic folk legend Dave Van Ronk joins in on this modern-day hootenanny, adding his trademark gruff vocal style to the traditional tune "He Was A Friend of Mine." SKU: 1016922

Nothing Like The Sun [ECD] [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Sting (vocals, guitar, bass); Fareed Haque (guitar); Ken Helman (piano); Kenny Kirkland (keyboards); Manu Katche, Andy Newmark, Kenwood Dennard (drums); Mino Cenelu (percussion, vocoder); Dolette McDonald, Janice Pendarvis, Vesta Williams, Renee Geyer (background vocals). Producers include: Sting, Neil Dorfsman, Bryan Loren. Recorded at Air Studios, Montserrat. Includes liner notes by Sting. Sting's double-length follow-up to his solo debut DREAMS OF THE BLUE TURTLE is very much in the same sophisticated, adult pop vein, although darker and less jazzy (notwithstanding a collaboration with Miles Davis's arranger Gil Evans on a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing"). The songs are a generally varied lot, ranging from a tribute to victims of repression in Argentina ("They Dance Alone") to a tongue-in-cheek, sort-of-reggae tribute to famous eccentric Quentin Crisp ("An Englishmanin New York"). The sort-of-funk "We'll Be Together"(originally written for a Japanese beer commercial) is the most upbeat and pop-ish thing here, and was deservedly a hit single, although Sting now disdains it. Tokyo Blues
Personnel: Horace Silver (piano); Junior Cook (tenor saxophone); Blue Mitchell (trumpet); Gene Taylor (bass); John Harris, Jr. (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on July 13 & 14, 1962. Includes liner notes by Atsuhiko Kawabata. THE TOKYO BLUES, a quintessential mid '60s Blue Note session, is Horace Silver's tribute to the Japanese people who have long supported his funky, Latin-flavored modern jazz. American jazz has always been wildly popular in Japan, and this album is Silver's homage to the many fans that he has encountered on various triumphant tours of the island nation. While Silver's trademark funky Latin/swing is at the forefront, the inspiration of eastern delights is clearly evident in all aspects of this grooving date. The bouncing blues of "Too Much Sake" sets the tone, a delightfully rhythmic melody and a funky mambo supporting tight solos by Junior Cook (saxophone), Blue Mitchell (trumpet), and the leader himself. The most compelling cut is the title track. Dark, Oriental atmosphere is combined with Silver's punchy piano style and explosive playing by all for an intriguing mixture of east and west. The only non-Silvercomposition, "Cherry Blossom," is a soft ballad that features a smoky performance by the pianist in the only trio setting of the session. Finally, the resounding chords of the closing "Ah, So" reflect far off lands before a burning solo section brings us back home. SKU: 1082043

Buffalo Skinners
Also available as part of a box set on Folkways (40112). NOTES: Full title: The Asch Recordings Vol. 4: Buffalo Skinners. Personnel: Woody Guthrie, Cisco Houston (vocals, guitar). Producer: Moses Asch. Compilation producers: Jeff Place, Guy Logsdon. Recorded in New York, New York between 1944 and 1949. Includes liner notes by Jeff Place and Guy Logsdon. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Moses Asch, founder of Folkways Records and a tireless preserver of traditional folk idioms and performers, treated even his studio sessions like field recordings, neither adding to nor taking from the songs as his performers chose to play them. Performed mostly solo (though Cisco Houston occasionally appears on guitar and backing vocals), these tracks range from the allegorical kiddie song "Froggie Went a-Courtin'," complete with the bloody conclusion often removed from sanitized versions, to work songs and cowboy tunes, with special emphasis placed on biographical tunes like "Billy the Kid" and Guthrie's own gangster saga "Pretty Boy Floyd." By the time these recordings were made in a New York studio in the late '40s, Woody Guthrie was nearing the end of his public career due to failing health, but he performs these 26 traditional folk and blues ballads and storysongs with his characteristic dry wit and unerring gift for interpretation.
