45 84 89 (The A Sides)
458489: THE A SIDES contains all the A sides from the Fall's singles released by Beggars Banquet between 1984 and 1989. The Fall: Brix Smith (vocals, guitar); Mark E. Smith (vocals, piano); Stephen Hanley (acoustic guitar, bass); Simon Rogers (guitar, keyboards); Craig Scanlon (guitar); Paul Hanley (keyboards, drums); Marcia Schofield (keyboards, background vocals); Karl Burns (bass, drums, percussion); Simon Wolstencroft (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Fredrica Federation (guitar). Producers include: John Leckie, K2, Simon Rogers, Ian Broudie, Grant Cunliffe. The A-SIDES is an essential sampler of The Fall's 1984-1989 output, closing the lid on the era many Fall fans consider the band's most fruitful. These years were also known as the Fall's "pop years" or as "the Brix years," after guitarist Brix Smith, the California-born guitar-playing then-wife of Fall leader Mark E. Smith who set Smith's increasingly didactic and vengeful screeds to quirky, psych-influenced pop music. The combination was intoxicating, and all 17 of these singles are brilliant--from the surprisingly straightforward covers of William Blake's "Jerusalem" and the Kinks' "Victoria" to the originals "Hey! Luciani" and "Couldn't Get Ahead." The A-SIDES is the best possible introduction to what one of the albums of this era called "The Wonderful and Frightening World of The Fall." SKU: 1007472

Old Rottenhat
This 1985 release was Robert Wyatt's first full-length album since the previous decade's double hitter of ROCK BOTTOM and RUTH IS STRANGER THAN RICHARD. The interim had found him making shorter statements on EP format, and a brilliant series of singles on Rough Trade which were subsequently assembled as NOTHING CAN STOP US. This is an overtly political set of songs, though personalized by Wyatt's own sense of poetics. They present a quietly outraged voice suffused with the melancholy that accompanies observations of human struggles that sometimes come to naught. This is gorgeous and evocative music sungin Wyatt's fragile yet powerfully emotive voice. There's no flag waving here and the intimate accompaniment underscores the songwriter's intense feeling for realism. SKU: 4123082

Memories (1968 Comeback Special)
Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Billy Goldenberg (conductor); The Blossoms; B.J Baker, Sally Stevens, Bob Tebow, John Bahler (vocals); Scotty Moore (acoustic & electric guitars); Charlie Hodge (acoustic guitar); Tommy Tedesco, Mike Deasy, Alvin Casey, Joseph Gibbons, Neil Levang, Charles Britz (guitar); Tommy Morgan (harmonica); Don Randi (piano); Larry Knechtal (keyboards, bass); Charles Berghofer (bass); Hal Blaine, Gary Coleman (drums); Lance Legault (tambourine); Frank DeVito (bongos); John Cyr, Elliot Franks, D.J. Fontana (percussion). Compilation producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Recorded at Western Recorders, Hollywood, California and live at NBC Studios, Burbank, California on June 20-25 & 27, 1968. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. Elvis' '68 COMEBACK SPECIAL was his chance to prove to countless TV viewers that the Elvis who embarrassed himself and his fans in countless lame films and sub-par albums throughout the early-to-mid-'60s was not the real Elvis. This was his attempt to reclaim his rightful place in the world of rock & roll, which had come so far since he helped invent it in the mid-'50s. Over the course of two discs, MEMORIES documents the entire evening, both the prearranged portion of the evening (disc one) and the ad hoc acoustic jam session that was the real highlight ofthe performance. The real hook here is the presence of several previously unreleased cuts from the latter, which go a long way toward portraying the 1968 Elvis as a man with nothing to prove, possessed of a rock & roll soul he couldn't lose no matter how many white jumpsuits he donned. Bent Out Of Shape [Remastered]
All tracks have been digitally remastered. Considering the number of personnel changes this band has had, vocalist Joe Lynn Turner was lucky to have a job after 1981's DIFFICULT TO CURE. Luckily, bandleader Richie Blackmore kept Joe on board for what turned out to be this excellent effort, which turned out to be the group's final studio album. This remastered edition of BENT outdoes its predecessor and holds up well years after its release. "Stranded" is a fine leadoff track that showcases the heavy pop crossover sound of the group. "Can't Let You Go" is a radio-friendly tune showcasing the emotional vocals of Turner. "Fire Dance" rocks hard, while "Anybody There" is a tender, bluesy instrumental. Richie Blackmore's controlled soloing clearly influenced artists like Joe Satriani. "Street of Dreams," a rock-radio hit, is probably the best representation of the band's final days--the song's production, hook, and solo make it quite memorable. The entire album sounds polished, but not too glossy, courtesy of producer and bassist Roger Glover. "Drinking With the Devil" is a tale of rock & roll excess. The metal-injected "Make Your Move"closes the album and also the book on a premier heavy rock band. SKU: 1017742

Yellow Submarine (Original Soundtrack)
The Beatles: John Lennon (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Paul McCartney (vocals, guitar, bass); George Harrison (vocals, guitar); Ringo Starr (vocals, drums). Starting out as a sing-a-long vehicle for Ringo Starr on REVOLVER, "Yellow Submarine" became the inspiration for the 1968 animated feature film of the same name. Most of the soundtrack was composed and orchestrated by George Martin, but the remaining six songs were far from being Beatle cast-offs. George Harrison's two contributions, "Only A Northern Song" and "It's All Too Much" mark the adventurously experimental phase the Beatles were in atthat time and dabble in woozy psychedelic shadings laced with orchestrations that continued to influence cutting-edge pop artists for decades to come. Along with the aforementioned "Yellow Submarine," other Lennon/McCartney compositions include the good-time, skiffle-flavored "All Together Now," the Lennon-driven rocker "Hey Bulldog," and "All You Need Is Love"--the unofficial flower-power anthem. Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player
The 1996 reissue of DON'T SHOOT ME I'M ONLY THE PIANO PLAYER includes four extra tracks. "Jack Rabbit," "Whenever You're Ready (We'll Go Steady Again)" and "Screw You" (originally released in the U.S. with the title "Young Man's Blues") were B-sides of singles from the GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD ALBUM. The piano version of "Skyline Pigeon" (the original, on EMPTY SKY, featured a harpsichord) was the B-side of the "Daniel" single. The album has been digitally remastered by the original producer, Gus Dudgeon, using original master tapes and digital processing equipment at 20-bit resolution. According to Dudgeon (ICE newsletter, January 1996), the results are "100% better" than the two previous American CD issues. Personnel includes: EltonJohn (vocals, piano, harmonium, electric piano, Farfisa organ, Mellotron); Gus Dudgeon, Paul Buckmaster (arrangers); Davey Johnstone (acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin, banjo, sitar, background vocals); Jean-Louis Chautemps, Alain Hatot (saxophone); Ivan Jullien (trumpet); Jacques Bolognesi (trombone); Ken Scott (ARP synthesizer); Dee Murray (bass, background vocals); Nigel Olsson (drums, maracas, background vocals). Recorded at Strawberry Studios, Chateau D'Hierouville, France. Originally released on MCA. Includes liner notes by John Tobler and Gus Dudgeon. This is part of Rocket's Elton John: The Classic Years series. DON'T SHOOT ME I'M ONLY THE PIANO PLAYER was the first of two 1973 albums that sealed Elton John's superstardom. It included his first U.S. #1 single, the nostalgic "Crocodile Rock," along with one of his most enduring ballads, "Daniel," a veiled salute to a Vietnam vet. By now, John was at ease in almost any musical setting. While lyricist Bernie Taupin continued to feed him the usual mix of road songs, homages to the American West and offbeat love ballads, John was flying ahead with an ambitious, try-anything agenda that effectively blurred the lines between AM pop and FM rock. "Crocodile Rock," with its whimsically vintage Farfisa organ, and "Daniel," a seductive studio concoction of keyboards and acoustic guitar, leaned toward the former. "Elderberry Wine" approached the latter, with its hard guitar sound and blues-rock horn-riffing, as did "Have Mercy On The Criminal," whose central riff echoes "Layla." "I'm Gonna Be A Teenage Idol," a tribute to Marc Bolan of T-Rex, lay tantalizingly across the center of the pop-rock line, sounding like a cabaret version of glitter-rock. By now, Elton John's place in history was assured; months later, John's domination of his era would come to full fruition with the release of GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD. SKU: 1000429

Danielewski (vocals); David Campbell (arrranger, viola); Daris Adkins (guitar); Charlie Bisherat (violin); John O'Brien (fiddle, programming); Larry Corbett (cello); Brandon Fields (saxophone); Gary Grant, Jerry Hey (trumpet); Bill Reichenbach (trombone); Kenneth Burgomaster, Jamie Muhoberac (keyboards); Mike "La Bomba" Elizondo (bass); Josh Freese, Trevor Lawrence, Jr., MichaelUrbano, Joey Waronker (drums); Olle Romo (programming). Producers: Poe, Olle Romo, Matt Wilder, Matt Wallace, Mike Urbano. Engineers: Kirk Fyvie, Phil Kaffel, Chad Bamford. HAUNTED, Poe's second release, is a concept album inspired by some recordings she found of her late father's speaking voice. Poe sampled those recordings and incorporated them into a narrative that's ostensibly about her feelings for and relationship with her father. The more you listen, though, the clearer it becomes that HAUNTED is an album about the big issues that affect all of humanity (life, death, family). The effect of the dead man's voice framed by Poe's eclectic arrangements (rock, hip-hop, electronica and more) is an eerie one, but there's enough thematic consistency and solid songwriting here to make the album a powerful statement rather than just an exercise in nostalgic melancholy. Furnace Room Lullaby
Neko Case & Her Boyfriends includes: Neko Case (vocals, tambourine); Ron Sexsmith (vocals, acoustic guitar); Travis Good (electric, tenor, baritone, & 8-string guitars, mandolin, fiddle); Evan Johns (electric & steel guitars); Brian Connelly (electric & baritone guitars); Don Kerr (tenor guitar, cello, drums); Joel Trueblood (drums); Kelly Hogan (background vocals). Principally recorded at Miller Block, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in January 1999 & March 1999. Neko Case is a Canada-based country singer who got her start (as a drummer) in music in the rock band Maow. But she'd always wanted to pursue her love of country music--and went after it with a vengeance. Case was not weaned on pop/mainstreamcountry: her voice has the back-country soul of Loretta Lynn (Patty Loveless is a good comparison, too). Her band is in-line with her voice: tight and crisp but with no Nashville gloss or pop-polish, featuring a lean, walloping honky-tonk twang right out of the '60s Buck Owens sound. Though her style is traditional, Case lyrically takes no prisoners--the assertive "Mood to Burn Bridges" tells busy-bodies where to get off, and the smoldering "Twist the Knife" vents--with elegance--her rage at a former lover. "Thrice All American" is a chillingly catchy anthem to/about Takoma, Washington. Those seeking a modern take on roots-oriented country sung by a classic voice, seek out Neko Case. SKU: 1030559

Tokyo Concert, The
Personnel: Bill Evans (piano); Eddie Gomez (bass); Marty Morell (drums). Engineers: Henichi Handa, Tomoo Suzuki, Yuiichi Maejima. Recorded live at Yubin Chokin Hall, Tokyo, Japan on January 20, 1973. Originally released on Fantasy (9457). Includes liner notes by Kiyoshi Koyama. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). This was Bill Evans' first album for the Fantasy label in the '70s, and he began his association in fine style. Beautifully recorded in Tokyo in January 1973, the Evans trio present a set of new additions to their "set list" to a wildly appreciative audience. This response seems to stoke the Trio's fire--all Evans' trademark lyricism is there, but there's a touch of "reckless" abandon in his playing--less restraint, even more swing. The bass and drums of Eddie Gomez (who sounds as though he's playing right next to you) and Marty Morell, respectively, play with almost telepathic empathy. The trio plays the usual standards, but introduce Bobbie Gentry's (that's right, the "Ode to Billy Joe" woman) "Mornin' Glory" and friend Tony Bennett's "Yesterday I Heard the Rain"--and the most glorious, sublime moment is a solo version of jazz bassist Steve Swallow's "HulloBolinas." On the latter, Evans' touch is so light and tender the notes seem to float out of the piano by themselves. A winner! SKU: 1004073

Past Masters Vol.2
PAST MASTERS VOLUME TWO is a compilation of singles, B-sides and other tracks that did not appear on the Beatles' original British albums. The Beatles as a general rule did not include their singles on their albums in the UK. PAST MASTERS VOLUME TWO is available with PAST MASTERS VOLUME ONE on one cassette on Parlophone (91135). The Beatles: John Lennon (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, percussion, sound effects): George Harrison (vocals, guitar); Paul McCartney (vocals, piano, bass, drums, maracas, sound effects); Ringo Starr (drums). Additional personnel includes: Brian Jones (saxophone); Nicky Hopkins (piano); Billy Preston (organ); Mal Evans (sound effects). Producer: George Martin. Compilation producer: Mark Lewisohn. Recorded between October 16, 1965 and January 4, 1970. Includes liner notes by Mark Lewisohn. All tracks are stereo except "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)." Along with its sister volume, PAST MASTERS 2 gathers singles, oddities and B-sides together and saves the dedicated Beatlemaniac considerable time and money hunting down this uncommon material. Like the "Blue Album," VOLUME TWO covers the second half of the Beatles career from 1965 to 1970. During this time period, the Fab Four stopped touring and focused their energies on studio recordings. The results included some of the Beatles' more experimental forays, like their first use of backwards tape ("Rain") and the breaking of the singles time barrier ("Hey Jude"). There are alternate versions of well-known songs ("Get Back," "Across The Universe"), and songs influenced by Fats Domino ("Lady Madonna") and Indian culture ("The Inner Light"). The most unusual tune included on this collection is "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)." This highly unusual recording was started in May 1967 and shelved before getting completed in November 1969. The result was an avant-cabaret number conceived by John Lennon, featuring mumbled vocals, Brian Jones' saxophone playing and sound effects replicating the inside of an after-hours club. SKU: 3104933

Flirting With Twilight
Personnel: Kurt Elling (vocals); Bob Sheppard (soprano & tenor saxophones); Jeff Clayton (alto saxophone); Clay Jenkins (trumpet); Laurence Hobgood (piano); Marc Johnson (bass); Peter Erskine (drums). Recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California on January 29-31 & Feburay 1, 2001. Includes liner notes by Zan Stewart. FLIRTING WITH TWILIGHT was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. "Easy Living" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s). Native Chicagoan Kurt Elling is quickly becoming the preeminent male vocalist of his generation. This may be in part due to the lack of under-40 male jazz singers altogether. Nonetheless, deeply influenced by Jon Hendricks, and Mark Murphy, Elling is a chance-taking improviser, who brings a fresh approach to modern jazz. On this 2001 release, he is teamed up with tenor saxophonist Bob Sheppard, among others and an all-star rhythm section featuring Marc Johnson on bass and Peter Erskine on drums. Largely mellow and ballad-driven, FLIRTING WITH TWILIGHT shows the depth of Elling's musical conception. Highlights include a fresh reworking of the Glenn Miller classic, "Moonlight Serenade" and a smart version of the subtle "Lil' Darlin'." On the former, Elling bases hisvocal stylings on Charlie Haden's bass solos from Quartet West's 1991 HAUNTED HEART release. On the latter, he uses Jon Hendrick's lyrics as a vehicle for creative melodic expression. SKU: 1066857
