Tropicana Nights [SACD]
Personnel: Paquito D'Rivera (soprano & alto saxophones, clarinet, background vocals); Brenda Feliciano, Lucrecia (vocals); Manuel Valera (alto saxophone); Andres Boiarsky, Oscar Feldman (tenor saxophone); Marshall McDonald (baritone saxophone); Mike Ponella, Diego Urcola, Gustavo Bergalli, Adalberto Lara, Alejandro Odio (trumpet); Noah Bless, Jimmy Bosch, Luis Bonilla, William Cepeda (trombone); Oriente Lopez (piano, background vocals); Dario Eskenazi (piano); David Oquendo (guitar, background vocals); Joe Santiago (bass); Mark Walker (drums); Joe Gonzales (bongos); Milton Cardona (congas); Ralph Irizarry (timbales); Beatriz Hernandez (background vocals). Includes liner notes by Paquito D'Rivera. "Tropicana Nights" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition. TROPICANA NIGHTS was nominated for the 2000 Latin Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album. This Cuban-born, New York-raised alto saxophonist/composer has done more than many musicians hope to in a lifetime. Rivera has composed for symphony orchestras; recorded with musical giants Dizzy Gillespie, Mario Bauza, and Astor Piazzola, as well as pop singer Gloria Estefan; and led his own ensembles. His saxophone style descends fromthat of Charlie Parker, but his reach (and grasp) extends to Coltrane and beyond. TROPICANA NIGHTS is an affectionate, exhilaratingly fun tribute to the big-band era of Cuba--the dance-bands of yesteryear: who they influenced and who influenced them. From the rousing "Mambo a la Kenton" that kicks off the proceedings to the soaring yet melancholy vocal (by Brenda Feliciano) "Siboney" to the suave, debonair "Old Miami Sax," this NIGHT is loaded with mercurial, passionate saxophone and tight, vibrant expert arrangements (by D'Rivera and the legendary Chico O'Farrill). Mambo, son, bolero, danzon--it's all here, and no one treats any of it like a museum piece. TROPICANA NIGHTS is a grand time waiting to happen. SKU: 1057526

Black Diamond
Personnel includes: Angie Stone, Lenny Kravitz, D'Angelo (vocals); Stephanie Bolton, Sekou Aiken,Gerry DeVeaux, Tenita Jordan Dreher, Gemini, Juliet Roberts (background vocals); Chalmers "Spunky" Alford, Tim Donovan, Joe Belmaati, Iran, Jonas Krag, Aaron "Freedom" Lyles, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Joe Quindy, Rex Rideout, Craig Ross. Producers include: Lenny Kravitz, Gerry Deveaux, D'Angelo, Ali Shaheed Muhammed, Russell Elevado. Engineers include: Aaron Connor, Tim Hunt, Angie Stone. This is a solo debut by a long-time backup singer who's worked with everybody from Lenny Kravitz to Buckwheat Zydeco. Kravitz and similarly retro balladeer D'Angelo are among the producers here, so the old-school soul sound of most of these tracks shouldn't be a surprise. "No More Rain in This Cloud," for example, cops its groove from early '70s groups like the Chi-Lites (its lyric quotes from Smokey Robinson's "Tracks of My Tears") and there's a very effective update/cover of Marvin Gaye's "Trouble Man" to boot. Proof that BLACK DIAMOND was made in the '90s: "Man Loves His Money," in which Stone declares her love for a paramour in bottom-line financial terms. SKU: 1029302

Every Six Seconds
Saliva: Josey Scott (vocals); Chris Dabaldo, Wayne Swinny (guitar); Dave Novotny (bass); Paul Crosby (drums). Additional personnel: Swinny (guitar, lap steel, banjo, mandolin). "Your Disease" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. While this hard-rocking quintet churns out gut-crunching guitar riffs capable of giving Korn or Limp Bizkit a run for their money, EVERY SIX SECONDS isn't a gravy train-riding rap-metal endeavor. From the sound of things, Salivahas learned a thing or two from the ominous, minor-key melodies of '90s grunge-related acts like Alice In Chains and the instantly accessible hooks of poppier types such as Collective Soul. While much of the album is spent at an intensity level of 11, there are moments (particularly the reflective "Hollywood") of relative melodic respite. Saliva sounds fully capable of pinning back the ears of any teenage mosh-pit denizen, but there are a few moments on this disc that wouldn't sound at all out of place in any given Top 40 radio format. If I Had A Hammer (Songs Of Hope & Struggle)
Personnel includes: Pete Seeger (vocals, 12-string guitar, banjo); Tao Rodriquez (vocals); David Amram (dumbeck); Almanac Singers (background vocals). All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Most of the many compilations of Pete Seeger's work avoid thematic cohesion, instead focusing on the remarkable breadth of his long and prolific career. This makes the excellent IF I HAD A HAMMER: SONGS OF HOPE AND STRUGGLE that much more interesting, as the 26 songs compiled here are arranged in four suite-like sections. After the title track and the reverent "Banks of Marble," the section subtitled "Solidarity Forever" collects seven of Seeger's most powerful labor anthems, including the classic "Which Side Are YouOn." The "Study War No More" section includes possibly Seeger's most famous tune, "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," alongside four other anti-war anthems. The four songs in the "We Shall Overcome" section, including that civil rights anthem, are among the set's most forceful. "I'd Hammer in the Evening" concludes the set with eight songs of hope and forgiveness. A most remarkable compilation. SKU: 1035775

Essential Clash, The
The Clash: Joe Strummer, Mick Jones (vocals, guitar); Paul Simonon (vocals, bass); Nicky "Topper" Headon, Tory Crimes, Pete Howard (drums). Producers include: Mickey Foote, The Clash, Sandy Pearlman, Guy Stevens, Jose Unidos. Compilation producer: Bruce Dickinson. Recorded between 1977 & 1985. It's somehow fitting that the first Clash collection to be released in the wake of frontman Joe Strummer's December 2002 death should be the closest anyone's ever come to a truly definitive non-box-set anthology. The two discs essentially work chronologically, starting out with a dose of old-school UK punk from the days when the Clash were messengers of political fury and icon-shattering rock & roll fire (the raging "White Riot" and gloriously snotty "I'm So Bored with the U.S.A."). We can hear the incorporation of reggae rhythms with "White Man in Hammersmith Palais" and Junior Murvin's street-fighting tale "Police & Thieves," and the beginnings of the Clash's infatuation with American music on the Bobby Fuller cover "I Fought the Law." Disc two finds the band truly at the peak of its powers, featuring tracks from LONDON CALLING and SANDINISTA, where both the lyricism and the stylistic palette were brought to a new level (the punk-rap of "The Magnificent Seven," the Caribbean lilt of "Rudie Can't Fail"). It'sto this compilation's strong credit that it not only includes a healthy portion from the most "difficult" Clash album (SANDINISTA), but some vital tracks from the odd-ends collection BLACK MARKET CLASH (the dubbed-out Robin Hood tale "Bankrobber," the snarling "Capital Radio One"), making THE ESSENTIAL CLASH much more than a greatest-hits collection. Lay It Down
Cowboy Junkies: Margo Timmins (vocals); Michael Timmins (guitar); Alan Anton (bass); Peter Timmins (drums). Additional personnel: John Keane (pedal steel guitar, guitar); Andy Carlson, Peter Schab (violin); Carl Schab (viola); Dave Henry (cello); Tim White, Jeff Bird (organ). Recorded at John Keane Studios, Athens, Georgia in June and July 1995. Cowboy Junkies' sixth album finds the band reclaiming the jazz-tinged, ethereal mood-rock that is their forte. Margo Timmins' pensive sopranosuits her brother Michael's mostly somber songs to a tee on this fine collection. The album's hushed recording style enhances the up-tempo material as well; the results can be almost Stones-y in spots. In fact, much of LAY IT DOWN's allure can be credited to the reemergence of Michael Timmins' guitar work as a prominent force within the group. He plays in a stripped down style that's both funky and reserved, always appropriate for the song's setting. LAY IT DOWN, the band's first release for Geffen Records, is evidence of the Cowboy Junkies' return to form. SKU: 1003039

So Tonight That I Might See
Mazzy Star includes: Hope Sandoval (vocals); David Roback (guitar); Keith Mitchell, William Cooper, Jason Yates. Combining the considerable talents of guitarist Dave Roback (Opal, Rain Parade) and Hope Sandoval's sultry, heavy-lidded vocals, Mazzy Star fuses blues, country, and pulsing acoustic folk in a dark psychedelic mix that recalls the Velvet Underground and The Doors. The group's highly textured, atmospheric sound emerged glittering and fully formed on the debut SHE HANGS BRIGHTLY, surprising listeners of "underground" music with its moody yet accessible mix. SO TONIGHT THAT I MIGHT SEE sticks close tothe ground staked out by its predecessor, though with no less success. "Wasted" moves insistently down the twelve-bar road to nuanced, snarling guitar embellishments. "Blue Light" is smoky, blue-eyed (if black-hearted) soul. Of particular note is the cover of Arthur Lee's "Five String Serenade," graced with lilting cello and tambourine accompaniment. Roback's electric/lysergic guitar explorations and Sandoval's blusey, lazily erotic sigh weave a deeply evocative spell, making SO TONIGHT a perfect 2:00AM album. SKU: 1003224

Emigrante
EMIGRANTE won the 2003 Latin Grammy Award for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Album. The album was also nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album. On EMIGRANTE, Latin hip-hop crew Orishas serves up a heady brew of aggressive, Cypress Hill-style rap combined with smooth Cuban vocals, old school beats, and sharp, minimalist production. A number of tracks also feature traditional Latin instrumentation, making the album a true fusion of North and South. Unlike many non-English speaking hip-hoppers, Roldan, Ruzzo and Yotuel are prodigious rhymers, reveling in the Spanish language's natural melodiousness, but adding a rhythmic virtuosity and biting edge usually only heard in the work of the best East coast rappers. By contrast, Orishas' lazy grooves often recall the West Coast G-funk jams of Dr. Dre. Despite the obvious touchstones, however, the presence of real instruments and the frequent use of vocals keep the record sounding fresh. Orishas' totally unique approach to hip-hop and their refusal to merely copy American artists makes EMIGRANTEone of the genre's, and perhaps 2002's, most important albums. SKU: 1082804

Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Tom Petty (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Mike Campbell (guitar); Ron Blair (cello, bass); Benmont Tench (piano, organ); Stan Lynch (drums). Recorded at the Shelter Studio, Hollywood, California. Originally released on Shelter (52006). Includes liner notes by Bill Flanagan. All tracks have been digitally remastered. The debut of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers came at a crucial time in American rock & roll history.Punk hadn't hit yet, and bloated rock dinosaurs like Bad Company and their ilk were still making life miserable for real rock & rollers. All the first generation roots-rock bands were gone. Petty's appearance marked the return of pure, unpretentious rock & roll that wasn't afraid to wear its '60s influences on its sleeve. The band's eponymous first album is full of Byrdsian ringing guitars, Dylan/McGuinn-style drawling vocals and pure pop hooks of the kind that hadn't been heard since the first Big Star album (and how many people heard Big Star at the time?). Petty also proved himself to be a world class pop songsmith on instant classics like "American Girl" and "Breakdown." SKU: 6158093

This Note's For You Too (Tribute To Neil Young)
All artist royalties and record company profits are being donated to charitable causes. Producers include: Billy Talbot, Tom Stevens, Nick Salomen, Joe Viers, Shane Faubert. Compilation producer: Jos Starmans. One of the most durable and affecting '60s rockers is Neil Young. From Buffalo Springfield to his quirky solo career, Young has influenced at least two generations of rockers and singer/songwriters. Many of the younger and (as yet) lesser-known performers pay tribute to his music on this two-CD set, with the songs arranged in the order Young recorded them. The Treble Spankers begin in fine twang-style with "Aurora," a driving, hot-rod-styled instrumental that was originally recorded in 1963 when Young was in the Squires. Some performers' versions are respectfully close to the originals, while some re-make the songs anew. Highlights include Sonya Hunter's elegiac "Expecting to Fly," Richard Lloyd's thundering "Heart of Gold," Eric Ambel's snaking, sinister "Revolution Blues" and Hitchin' Post's countrified "Tell Me Why." Gentle folky renditions alternate with rough-hewn, tortured rockers--and sometimes both approaches are combined. Unlike many tribute albums, the quality of the 37 tracks here is consistently good to great, with nooutright duds. Highly recommended to (adventurous) Neil Young fans. SKU: 5030604

Mulan [Remastered]
Original score composed by Jerry Goldsmith. "True To Your Heart" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Song Written For A Motion Picutre Or For Television. The soundtrack to Disney's animated musical MULAN is a star-studded affair. Film music legend Jerry Goldsmith composed and conducted the original score, which is stylistically in keeping with much of his past work. The songs on the album though, composed by Matthew Wilder and DavidZippel, roam a bit further afield, employing the vocal talents of an extremely diverse group that includes Stevie Wonder, Donny Osmond and Harvey Fierstein. Now there's a combination not likely to be repeated! In keeping with the theme of the film, some of the original tunes incorporate Asian musical motifs, but rock, pop and R&B all find their way into the mix as well. SKU: 1071526
