For its second major-label album (following THE LAND OF RAPE AND HONEY), Ministry combined elements of industrial, punk rock, heavy metal, and hard-beat techno. In doing so, the band forged the mold copied by countless other American bands--from Nine Inch Nails to Marilyn Manson.
MIND opens with the one-two punch of "Thieves" and "Burning Inside." The first features a whip-fast chorus, punctuated by samples of the drill-like sound of an automatically rewinding camera, that sets off the obsessive anger of the verses. In the second, vocalist Al Jourgensen's slightly phased vocals cut across razor-sharp bursts of guitar and a massive drum sound. Both songs are fast, aggressive, and quite brilliant. "Cannibal Song" and "So What" sound like super-heavy outtakes from Public Image Limited's METAL BOX / SECOND EDITION. "Test" almost falls into the trap of white boys playing at rap but is saved by its crunching, hypnotic guitar line and screeching feedback. The record's masterstroke is "Breathe." The pummeling, double-tracked percussion leads Jourgensen'scommanding vocal delivery as the song spirals on and on, the fade-out suggesting that the song could have gone on forever. If only Ministry's children sounded as good as this. An American classic.

This 1970 releasefinds Zappa and band at the apex of their improvisational powers. CHUNGA'S REVENGE largely eschews both high concept and satire in order to focus on the considerable jamming expertise of Zappa and his cohorts. In its original LP form, the album was divided into two discrete halves. The first side consists of extended, largely instrumental pieces where Zappa and his musicians stretch out and show off their improv chops over relatively simple, often blues-based structures. The keyboard-based instrumental interlude "Twenty Small Cigars" provides an interesting semi-classical change of pace.
Side two contains shorter, vocal-oriented numbers, with harmonies that draw on the doo-wop influence of Zappa's youth (a recurrent element in his work). Slightly schizophrenic though it may be, CHUNGA'S REVENGE is something of a showcase for the members of Zappa's group, displaying their vocal and instrumental interaction to fine effect.

Queens, New York resident F.M. Cornog is a one-man band in the Stephin Merritt/Magnetic Fields tradition, originally renowned as the first American artist ever signed to legendary British indie Sarah Records. Cornog records by himself, on a cassette machine in his living room, and initially self-released cassettes on his own Hell's Gate label. He shares Merritt's taste for low-budget solo reinterpretations of soul-stirring '60s pop archetypes, but the comparison breaks down after that.
For one thing, Cornog uses more guitars in one song than Merritt might employ over the course of a full album. More importantly, where Merritt's often jaundiced and cynical lyrics are laced with dry irony and goofy similes, Cornog's emotionally direct songs are often genuinely dark, with lyrics befitting such titles as "I Am A Small Mistake" and "Prettiest Whore." Nevertheless, hispretty, ringing guitar-pop melodies create their own uplift, making MEL a fascinating dichotomy of light and shadow.

Billy Corgan probably never smashed a pumpkin in his life. He was too busy making fun of the macho oafs who fueled their teen angst with power chords and cheap beer. Corgan is much more the type to hide in his room and write sweet songs or bash out manic sludgefests with tricky titles. "Plume," being the perfect example, finds Corgan boasting "my boredom outshines the sun."
Boasting aside, Corgan's boredom is not contagious or completely self-serving. PISCES ISCARIOT is a collection of B-sides and rarities that, even more than GISH or SIAMESE DREAM, offers insight into the workings of one of alternative rock's most sought-after songwriters.
Corgan's introspective quiet side is exemplified by his cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" and the Corgan original "Soothe," which,in the spirit of lo-fi, he recorded in his apartment. The other side of the Smashing Pumpkins' sound is James Iha's driving guitar, a psychedelic sonic blast that is quickly distinguishable from the ranks of AOR and typical grungy alterna-rock. Despite a slight new wave flavor on its title track, the debut record by Canadian singer-songwriter Bryan Adams is a solid, well-played slab of straight-ahead, four-on-the-floor rock & roll. On tracks like catchy opener, "Lonely Nights," Adams shows how he can take a pretty basic riff and get the most out of it through his heartfelt, emotional delivery.

HARD TRAVELIN' is the third installment of Smithsonian Folkway's four-volume Woody Guthrie anthology. The anthology, made up entirely of recordings produced by the legendary Moses Asch, constitutes the definitive collection of Guthrie's work. Each disc focuses on a particular theme; HARD TRAVELIN' primarily contains songs with political and social themes. Among Guthrie's many talents was the gift for presenting leftist ideals as good old American common sense. A natural idealism and a wicked sense of humor both served Guthrie well in this regard, as this set amply demonstrates.
HARD TRAVELIN' features some of Guthrie's better-known songs, among them "I Ain't Got No Home" and "So Long, It's Been Good To Know You." The disc should serve as an eye-opener for casual Guthrie fans, revealing a treasure trove of obscure numbers of equal quality to Guthrie's famous numbers. Also included are a few true oddities, among them a song about the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam and two Hanukkah songs (Guthrie, a Baptist, grew interested in Judaism after marrying a Jewish dancer). Those seeking a single disc including the greatest number of Guthrie hits, coincidentally, should consider the firstvolume in the anthology, THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND.

One of themore high-profile synth-pop bands of the 1980s, Erasure continued recording into the following decades, and was able to experience the '80s revival of the 2000s firsthand. NIGHTBIRD (2005) bears all the characteristics of Erasure's classic sound--drum-machine beats, highly processed keyboards, and vocalist Andy Bell's heartfelt croon. Most importantly, Bell and synth master/sound architect Vince Clarke have maintained their keen sense of pop songcraft, as evidenced by the 11 catchy, solidly built tunes that fill the album.
It appears that time has made Clarke and Bell wiser and more reflective, since the songs on NIGHTBIRD actually seem stronger and more resonant than Erasure's earlier work, radiating honesty and authenticity even on first listen. "Breathe," for example, with a mid-tempo verse groove building to a lush, expansive chorus, is quite beautiful, and the deeply romantic "Let's Take One More Rocket to the Moon" is enough to make even the hardest hearts flutter. Erasure remains leagues better than the dozens of synth-pop acts they've inspired, and NIGHTBIRD--with its combination of old-school sound and compelling latter-day songwriting--finds the band better than ever.

Widely regarded as one of the finest moments in a stellar recording career, ELI & THE THIRTEENTH CONFESSION was a bold, original amalgam of jazz, soul, folk, and rock. Nyro's freewheeling, open-ended arrangements were brought into sharp focus by her clear, gospel-derived singing and incisive, poetic lyrics. There is a strong spiritual undercurrent at work here, investing even the darker songs with a timeless, celebratory feel. A testament to Nyro's songwriting abilities, ELI contained several songs that became hits for other artists, including "Stoned Soul Picnic" and "Eli's Comin,"popularized by the Fifth Dimension and Three Dog Night, respectively.

There is an argument in the world of jazz criticism for the re-classification of Ella Fitzgerald. Though Fitzgerald is regarded as a blues singer, her vocals lack true blues phrasing. Furthermore, Fitzgerald's upbeat, sunny performer-persona and extremely broad repertoire make her less a jazz singer than a pop singer. Whereas this line of thinking is clearly in the minority, it's evident that Fitzgerald's vocal "impurities" are at least useful in defining a singular niche for her among jazz vocalists.
As a compilation, ELLA may not represent the "larger picture" of Fitzgerald's repertoire but does provide at least partial evidence to support this rogue impression of Fitzgerald as pop diva. These lesser-known works from the American songbook owe their survival to Fitzgerald's bubbly performances. Backed by a big band throughout, the divine Ms. Fitzgerald not only gives the impression that these are some of her favorite songs but even gets us thinking about how much we also love them. A pop singer's trick, to be sure.

With the help of his longtime friend and producer, Tommy LiPuma, George Benson crafts a guitar heavy, yet commercially viable album with ABSOLUTE BENSON. Benson here delivers guitar work similar to his '70s CTI releases; his guitar licks are lyrical, logical, and liquid, and his sparse vocals are also impressive.
ABSOLUTE BENSON kicks off with a Latin-flavored cover of Donny Hathaway's "The Ghetto," and follows with its companion piece, the equally Latin-influenced "El Barrio." Benson also covers material by Ray Charles ("Come Back Baby"), Stevie Wonder ("Lately"), and by guitarist Marc Antoine ("Jazzenco"). Joe Sample's contributions are "Deeper Than You Think," "One on One," and "Hipping the Hop," and Benson and Sample even team up on the composition of the funky album closer, "Medicine Man." Benson really seems to enjoy himself on this recording, and he seems to enjoy playing with the wonderful musicians that join him. ABSOLUTE BENSON solidifies Benson's position as a master among smooth jazz guitarists.

By the timeLove was creating what's widely considered their crowning achievement, FOREVER CHANGES, the band was unraveling. After a nearly two year absence Arthur Lee returned in 1969 with a new line-up, introduced on this album. What had previously been an ensemble with considerable input from more than one writer and singer (the importance of Bryan MacLean on Love's first three albums cannot be discounted) had now become more-or-less a one-man show. Lee's new rhythm section and lead guitarist made for a solid band, however.
Lee took advantage of the new sound and started the album off with "August," a powerful blast (introducing and contrasting the quieter body of the song) heretofore unheard on a Love record. The new band had shifted away from the tightly arranged structures that previously tied them to such Los Angeles cohorts as The Byrds and consequently had more in common with the San Francisco ballroom bands, with longer solos and more emphasis on grooves.

On Lifes Rich Pageant, the band confidently tackled political and environmental issues, a direction more fully explored on the later DOCUMENT and GREEN. Defiant and celebratory returns to their punk influences ('Just A Touch', 'These Days') were balanced by laments about US environmental policy and the folk tradition of the American South ('Swan Swan H'). Mills' and Berry's harmonies shone through, particularly on 'Fall On Me', still one of the best songs in the vast R.E.M. catalogue. A curiously sensitive and affecting album, packed with crafted pop songs, it marked a watershed for a group on the brink of unimagined worldwide success.

The generous four-disc collection STEPPIN' OUT draws from the same 1972 British tour that's documented on the classic EUROPE '72 album, but this 2002 release delves even deeper into those archives. It was a unique time for the band; keyboardist Keith Godchaux had just arrived, but founding organist/singer/harmonica player Pigpen would still be hanging on for a few more months until his death in '73. Thus, the bands rootsy/bluesy beginnings are represent on Pigpen features such as "It Hurts Me Too" and "Turn on Your Lovelight" while Godchaux helps stir the swirling, cosmic jams of "Playing in the Band" and "The Other One." Also, Mickey Hart had taken a hiatus, leaving Bill Kreutzmann the only drummer, which makes for a more pointed, groove-based rhythm feel even on the more psychedelic, sprawling numbers.
You'll hear stellar versions of some of the usual suspects from the Dead's '70s repertoire (the Dylan-meets-Chuck Berry "Greatest Story Ever Told," the day-glo Buddy Holly of "Not Fade Away"). However, there are some rarities such as the Bob Weir-sung narrative "Black-Throated Wind," and covers of Huey "Piano" Smith's New Orleans R&B classic "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu" and the self-explanatory "Hey Bo Diddley." With production overseen by the Dead's organization, STEPPIN' OUT boasts excellent fidelity and virtually no weak spots.

Here comes Jann Arden, jingling and jangling her way into your heart with a rich alto voice and a CD replete with rich, hook-laden music. Aaah, that voice. She's been compared to Heart's Ann Wilson, and it's a comparison that at once rings true, yet somehow doesn't quite do her justice. Arden, like Wilson, has power to spare. But she also has a knack for wrapping her voice around a tune, with a sensuous, subtle touch. Songs like "Demolition Love" highlight this ability. It's something you can't really learn. One moment powerful, the next little-girl lost, but always there's a sense of control, of knowing just how far to go with a melody.
Arden alsohas a knack with the pen, as she turns a wry line or two about physical pleasure--and its consequences--in "Insensitive." Her band on this disc is superb--there is some truly beautiful acoustic-guitar playing by Dave Resnik--and the production is immaculate.

Moses Asch was not only the founder of Folkways Records, but also a tireless preserver of traditional folk idioms and performers. Like John and Alan Lomax, he often traveled the country making field recordings of traditional folk songs, often along with reminiscences and anecdotes by the performers. By the timethese recordings were made in a New York studio in the mid-'40s, Woody Guthrie was not only already a well-known performer and songwriter, he was nearing the end of his public career due to failing health. However, Asch treated these sessions just as he did his field recordings, neither adding to or taking from these classic songs as Guthrie chose to record them. Sometimes solo, sometimes with the backing of folks like Brownie McGhee, Sorry Terry, Pete Seeger, and Cisco Houston, Guthrie performs folk and blues standards with his characteristic dry wit and unerring gift for interpretation. This collection is essential.
