As Time Goes By
Personnel includes: Bryan Ferry (vocals, synthesizer); Nils Solberg, Phil Manzanera (guitar); Martin Wheatley (banjo); Gavyn Wright, Dave Woodcock, Abraham Lebrovich, Boguslav Kostecki, Wilf Gibson (violin); Phil Dukes, Peter Lale (viola);Anthony Pleeth (cello); Cynthia Millar (ondes martenot); Hugh Webb (harp); Jim Tomlinson (clarinet, alto saxophone); Alan Barnes (clarinet, tenor saxophone); Jose Libertella, Luis Stazo (bandoneon); Robert Fowler (tenor saxophone); Enrico Tomasso (trumpet); Malcolm Earle Smith, Bob Hunt (trombone); Colin Good (piano, synthesizer, harmonium); Richard Jeffries, Chris Laurence (bass); John Sutton, Andy Newmark (drums); Frank Ricotti (percussion); James Sanger (programming); Oxford Girls Choir (background vocals). Recorded at Lansdowne Studios, London, England. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. AS TIME GOES BY was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Back in the early '70s, Bryan Ferry released a pair of albums, THESE FOOLISH THINGS and ANOTHER TIME, ANOTHER PLACE. With the exception of the title track on the latter, both records consist entirely of Ferry's reinterpretations of other artists' songs, all of which bear his own personal stamp. AS TIME GOES BY, which was released in 1999, is another collection of covers, which were taken primarily from the '30s. This time around, however, the songs are fairly faithful renditions of the originals, even down to the addition of artificial "surface noise" and the "canning" of Ferry's vocals to simulate the sonic idiosyncrasies of a old-fashioned, hank-cranked record player. The best tracks here are the ones on which Ferry is clearly having some fun, as on "When Somebody Thinks You're Wonderful" and "Sweet and Lovely," both of which feature the kind of scat trumpet playing that Louis Armstrong made famous. Other standouts include "Lover Come Back to Me," with its jazz guitar/piano combination; "I'm in the Mood for Love," which recalls the brilliance and sophistication of Ferry's late-period work with Roxy Music circa-FLESH + BLOOD; and "Where or When," which features one of his great tortured vocals, accompanied by graceful strings. London Live '68
Fleetwood Mac: Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer (guitar); John McVie (bass); Mick Fleetwood (drums). Recorded live at the Main Extension Building of the Polytechnic of Central London, London, England on April 27, 1968. Includes liner notes by Joseph Adair. Though they ultimately made their name as a blues-rock band, and Peter Green's admiration of artists like Jerry Garcia eventually found its way into their music, Fleetwood Mac began as a straight-ahead blues band. A bunch of Brits devoted to the music of Chicago and the Delta, Green and company couldn't help but put their own twist on the blues, but they were simultaneously reverential towards it. This is the situation presented in this 1968 live recording. While the sound quality is less than stellar, it's good enough to make the guitar talents of Green and Jeremy Spencer obvious, as they work up effective solos over "Got To Move,""Vuzz Me" and others. Unlike their peers, who used blues as a vehicle to something larger and louder, Mac circa '68 stuck close to their roots and made it work. The live setting proved even more inspiring for the two guitarists, whose blistering lead work is the central focus throughout this album. SKU: 1063302

Round About Midnight [Remastered]
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); William "Red" Garland (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Philly Joe Jones (drums). Reissue producers: Bob Belden, Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, New York between October 26, 1955 and September 10, 1956. Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal. All tracks have been digitally remastered. With the release of the spectral title tune, and the efforts of the Columbia marketing and publicity departments behind him, a thirty-year old Miles Davis entered into a period of extraordinary artistic maturity and growth. And Miles instinctively knew how to cultivate his star quality. Looming behind those shades, was the diffident, sensitive anti-hero--proud and defiant--who only spoke to his audience through his horn, and turned his back on them when the other soloists were blowing. The combination of attitude and intellect was irresistible. Beginning with ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT and proceeding through a remarkable succession of famous recordings over the next 30 years, Miles Davis became one of the greatest soloists, arrangers and talent scouts in the history of American music. People who didn't own a single jazz record came to know his name--Miles was a jazz icon. His famous intro on the title tune is based on mentor Dizzy Gillespie's arrangement, and Miles' tone, always a strong point, has here matured into something deeply personal and unique. His provocative use of space and silence--matched only by Lester Young, Billie Holiday and Thelonious Monk--sets up the famous release and Coltrane's agitated statement. Here and on the Prestige recordings, Coltrane found his voice as Miles' foil, while "The Rhythm Section" (pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones), became the most celebrated in jazz--capable of smooth, bouncy delicacy ("Dear Old Stockholm," "All Of You" and "Bye Bye Blackbird"), hard swing ("Tadd's Delight")and relentless complexity (Charlie Parker's contrapuntal "Ah-Leu-Ch"). A masterpiece. SKU: 1059461

All Around My Hat
Steeleye Span's eighth album, 1975's ALL AROUND MY HAT, is a fan favorite, up there with PLEASE TO SEE THE KING as one of the band's most beloved records. It's a superlative piece of folk-rock, where both halves of that genre come into equal play. Produced by Mike Batt, best known for his bubblegum singles with British children's show stars The Wombles, the results, while undeniably commercial--several songs have orchestral strings and brass supporting the fiddles--are crisp and inviting. It's not surprising that this is Steeleye Span's best-selling album. Besides the lovely title track, highlights include an excellent version of the standard "Black Jack Davy,"the gloomy "Hard Times of Old England" and the beautiful, unaccompanied "Cadgwith Anthem." If you're a pop fan with little knowledge of English folk music, this may be Steeleye Span's most immediately accessible and rewarding album. SKU: 1076598

No Other (Remastered & Expanded)
Personnel includes: Gene Clark (vocals, guitar); Cindy Bullens, Claudia Lennear, Ronnie Barron, Venetta Fields, Clydie King, Shirley Matthews, Carlena Williams, Tim Schmit (vocals); Mitch Utley (keyboards); Lee Sklar (bass); Butch Trucks (drums). Recorded at The Village Recorder, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Matt Greenwald. Clark's songwriting contribution to the early Byrds was a glorious asset that even they did not appreciate at the time. Many fans willed him to make this excellent album,if only to reinforce the respect and faith they had in his ability. Ill-health and booze kept him from repeating this solo effort and continuing his life as a songwriter. This paradoxical recording can be taken lightly (easy-on-the-ear songs) or as a heavy symbolic lyrical statement (deep stuff). More country rock than pop and like Astral Weeks, it has long-term hidden depths. The silk flares he wears on the cover have never been topped, by male or female. SKU: 1085816

Waved Out
Personnel: Robert Pollard (vocals, various instruments); Stephanie Sayers (various instruments); Doug Gillard (guitar); Kattie Dougherty (trumpet); Tobin Sprout (piano, high hat); Brett Owesly (organ); Johnny Strange (bass); Jim MacPherson (drums). By 1998. It was impossible to tell where Guided By Voices ended and the Ohio band's frontman, Robert Pollard, began. GBV, which made its name on lo-fi versions of one man's twisted memories of '60s and '70s pop, rock and psychedelia, was making bright, shimmering, almost-modern studio albums. Pollard, meanwhile, made the kinds of albums GBV used to, short, lo-fi songs, self-consciously weird and still so hummable they could stop a Hollies compilation in its tracks. WAVED OUT improves on Pollard's excellent debut, NOT IN MY AIRFORCE, by making the music sparer and his meanings clearer. The acoustic songlets "Caught Waves Again" and "Artificial Light" set naked emotions to perfect hooks without any attempt to cover up, as Pollard has done before. Never mind that one is hopeful and one terribly downcast; the theme seems to be the singer's sudden need to communicate concrete ideas. While a couple of new songwriting collaborators--GBV guitarist Doug Gillard and singer-songwriter Stephanie Sayers--give the music a welcome breadth, Pollard infuses the words with an even more welcome catchiness of concept. The hook of "Subspace Biographies"--"There is nothing worse than/An undetermined person"--may be as close to a defining mantra as he's come. SKU: 1007998

Rollins Band: Henry Rollins (vocals); Chris Haskett (guitar); Melvin Gibbs (bass guitar); Sim Cain (drums). Henry Rollins is a coffee achiever. The erstwhile Black Flag frontman has written books, started book publishing and record companies, established himself as a major spoken-word performer, appeared in several films and, oh yeah, he's got his own band. On COME IN AND BURN, another fine Rollins Band album cut with the same efficient, take-no-prisoners, accept-no-excuses style as the rest, Rollins doesn't so much sing as declaim, either in a creepily distant monotone or an urgent bark. This vocal style makes perfect sense here, as anything else would clash with the workmanlike thrash-metal churned out by the band. It is the Rollins Band's intention to pummel its listeners into submission, so thelack of subtlety and shifting dynamics is a functional necessity. Rollins' lyrics offer enough tales of pain, self-hatred and depression to make an afternoon TV talk show host drool, but he faces these emotions head on, with no sentimentality or pretension. Live At The Quick
Bela Fleck & The Flecktones: Bela Fleck (banjo, guitar, synthesizer); Jeff Coffin (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, flute, clarinet); Victor Lemonte Wooten (synthesizer, electric bass); Future Man (synthesizer, percussion, electronic percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Congar Ol'Ondar (throat singing); Paul McCandless (sopranino saxophone, soprano saxophone, oboe, English horn); Paul Hanson (bassoon); Andy Narell (keyboards, steel pans); Sandip Burman (tabla). Recorded live in 2000. Includes liner notes by Bela Fleck. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones bring sophistication to the hard-to-define genre of jam-band music. While Phish and Dave Matthews Band helped to modernize the jam-band approach, Bela Fleck almost single-handedly took it to the next level by employing a drummer who plays on a home-made, electronic "drumitar" and by using his own instrument--the banjo--more like a jazz guitar. Fleck certainly knows howto break down musical borders and sandblast musical stereotypes. On LIVE AT THE QUICK, Fleck takes his penchant for all things weird one step further by employing an improvising oboist and bassoonist, a steel drummer, a Tuvan throat singer, and a tabla player. What makes Fleck so interesting, unique, and downright brilliant, is his ability to take a motley bunch such as this and create cohesive, listener-friendly music. Particularly strong tracks include the hypnotic "Big Country," which features a riveting electric solo by Fleck, and the Middle-Eastern influenced "A Moment So Close." On the latter, we are treated to the bass virtuosity of Victor Wooten, together with Sandip Burman's tabla playing and Congar Ol'Ondar's fascinating throat singing. SKU: 1071889

Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas (Original Game Soundtrack/+DVD) [Digipak] [PA]
Full title: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. As the scenarios and graphics of home-system video games have increased in sophistication, so has the musical accompaniment. The complexly recreated worlds of early-2000s games like GRAND THEFT AUTO require a musical backdrop that is as dynamic, detailed, and energizing as the game itself. The 2004 installment, SAN ANDREAS, keeps with GRAND THEFT AUTO's paradigm of ever-changeable radio stations inside the cars that the game-players navigate. Players are able to flip between stations, genres, and moods at the touch of a control button. Set in Southern California during the early 1990s, SAN ANDREAS features much of themusic popular at the time, including hard-hitting rap (2Pac, Cypress Hill) and rock acts (Rage Against the Machine, Faith No More). But the well-selected soundtrack also ranges across the dial to include reggae and funk classics (Toots & the Maytals' "Pressure Drop," James Brown's "The Payback," respectively), '70s rock chestnuts (Heart's "Barracuda"); old-school hip-hop (Eric B. & Rakim's "I Know You Got Soul"), and curveball gems (Willie Nelson's "Crazy"). The package also includes a DVD that provides an introduction to the game. SKU: 6578110

Fly On The Wall [Remastered]
This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. AC/DC: Brian Johnson (vocals); Angus Young, Malcolm Young (guitar); Cliff Williams (bass); Simon Wright (drums). Recorded at Mountain Studios, Montreaux, Switzerland. Originally released on Atlantic (81263). Includes liner notes by Brian Ives. AC/DC remained popular amongst metalheads in the mid '80s, but the commercial disappointment of albums like 1983's FLICK OF THE SWITCH showed thatthe pop audience who discovered the band with 1980's mammoth seller BACK IN BLACK was losing interest. Instead of radically altering its sound like many other hard rock bands of the era did after weak-selling albums, AC/DC admirably stuck to its guns and continued in a bluesy hard rock direction with 1985's FLY ON THE WALL. While the album didn't exactly catapult the band back to the top of the charts, it did sell more copies than its predecessor. The album also marked the band's first studio recording with new drummer Simon Wright. FLY ON THE WALL's highlights include "Sink the Pink" and "Shake Your Foundations," a track that would be included just one year later on WHO MADE WHO, a soundtrack to Stephen King's movie MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE. "Danger," "Back in Business," and "Playing With Girls," are also standouts. While it's not on par with AC/DC's classic albums, FLY ON THE WALL is still a strong effort. SKU: 1084956

Mixed Bag
Personnel: Richie Havens (vocals, guitar); Paul Williams (acoustic guitar); Howard Collins (guitar); Paul Harris (acoustic & electric piano, organ); Harvey Brooks (bass); Bill LaVorgna (drums); Joe Price (tabla). Includes liner notes by Jerry Schoenbaum. Richie Havens's third album, his first for the Verve label, put him on the map in the worldof progressive folk music. Though Havens strummed an acoustic guitar and sang out against social injustice, he was anything but a typical folk singer. Everything about him was unique, from his unorthodox, open-tuned guitar style to his singing, which combined a strong, Otis-like soul element with a plaintive troubadour style. While MIXED BAG contains strong original material like the evergreen "High Flying Bird," Havens's greatest strength is as an interpreter, a fact proven by his brilliant deconstructions of everything from "Eleanor Rigby" to "Just Like A Woman."
