Lost Album 1978-1979, The
The Go-Betweens were prepared to release THE LOST ALBUM on Berserkley Records before the label folded in 1979. The Go-Betweens: Robert Forster (vocals, guitar); Grant McLennan (vocals, harmonica, bass); Tim Mustafa (drums). Additional personnel includes: Peter Milton Walsh (guitar); Malcolm Kelly (piano, organ); Dennis Cantwell (drums). Principally recorded at Sunshine Studios, Brisbane, Australia between 1978 and 1979. Includes liner notes by Robert Forster. All tracks have been digitally remastered. 79 'TIL 79 includes the first and second singles released by the Go-Betweens, a track from an aborted third single, and eight demos primitively recorded in a bedroom. Accompanied by a short essay by band co-founder Robert Foster (FYI, the demos were recorded in his bedroom), the collection explores the roots of one of Australia's greatest musical exports. The first two tracks--the debut single--include an clever ode to an actress; "Lee Remick" features the immortal couplet"She was in THE OMEN with Gregory Peck / She got killed, but what the heck," and "Karen" is a creepy song about an infatuation with a librarian that spins ever more out of control. The demos that follow show the formation of the Go-Betweens' "sound" and feature early experiments with vocal duets (especially notable on "Summer's Melting My Mind"). The disc ends with tracks from their second single, the best of which is the muscled acoustic guitar (and harmonica!) of "Don't Let Him Come Back." This collection's standout, though, is "The Sound of Rain," a song as carefully conceived and performed as anything in the band's catalogue and that deserves a place on any list of the band's best material. I'm Just A Girl
Personnel includes: Deana Carter (vocals, acoustic guitar, synthesizer, chimes); Dwight Yoakam (vocals); Dan Dugmore (acoustic, electric, lap steel & steel guitar, dobro); Matraca Berg, John D. Willis, Chuck Jones (acoustic guitar); Tom Bukovac, Dann Huff, Billy Mann (electric guitar); Jonathan Yudkin (banjo, mandolin, fiddle, cello); Randy Leago (clarinet, horns, accordion, piano, Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards); John Hobbs, Steve Nathan (organ, keyboards); Glenn Worf (bass); Steve Brewster, Ricky Fataar, Chris McHugh, Greg Morrow (drums); Erick Darken (percussion); Bekka Bramlett, Lisa Cochran, Andrew Gold, Crystal Taliefero (background vocals). On her third album, and her first for Arista, pop-country star Deana Carter ventures ever further from traditional country convention (not that she was ever exactly Kitty Wells to begin with). "Cover of a Magazine" is a pure pop confection where Carter appears to have her cake and eat it too by lustily dreaming of being a sexy cover model but maintaining a small measure of ironic distance from the subject as an escape clause. In perhaps the biggest non-country step by any Nashville artist this side of Shania Twain, Carter seemingly jumps on board the contemporaneous garage rock revival with the rambunctious "Girls' Night Out." Carter'sclearly nobody's fool--when the climactic moment in the title song arrives, and she sings "I'm a Chevy girl" you can practically see the potential automotive endorsements falling like rain from a cloudy sky. "Liar" is perky, chugging, '80s-sounding pop-rock that wouldn't have sounded out of place on an early Pat Benatar record. Dwight Yoakam turns up for a stab at old-school country duet singing on "Waiting," but with her inclination toward changing things up stylistically, Carter seems unlikely to wait for anyone or anything to catch up with her. Ellington '55
Personnel: Duke Ellington (piano); Ray Nance (vocals, trumpet, violin); Russell Procope (alto saxophone, clarinet); Rick Henderson (alto saxophone); Jimmy Hamilton (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Paul Gonsalves(tenor saxophone); Harry Carney (baritone saxophone, bass clarinet); Clark Terry, Cat Anderson, Wilie Cook (trumpet); Quentin Jackson, Britt Woodman, Alfred Cobbs, George Jean, John Sanders (trombone); Billy Strayhorn (celeste); Wendall Marshall, Jimmy Woode (bass); Dave Black (drums). Producer: Dave Dexter. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded in New York, New York on December 21, 1953 and June 17, 1954 and Chicago, Illinois in December 1953, January 1954 and May 1955. Includes liner notes by Michael Cuscuna. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Ron McMaster. Duke Ellington could coax more fragrance and finesse out of a large jazz ensemble than just about anyone else could, and still swing hard doing it. So to hear his mid-'50s aggregation roar through big band standards like "In the Mood" and "Flying Home" is a little startling, but nevertheless great. Of course, Ellington played dances and dance music and created dozens of standards himself, and two of his rowdiest bookend this CD, "Rockin' in Rhythm" and an extended jam on "It Don't Mean a Thing." Like the repertoire, the personnel is a mix of old guard and new, and packed with stellar soloists, from trumpeters Clark Terry and Cat Anderson to reedmen Paul Gonsalves and Jimmy Hamilton. If you're still new to Ellington, better to start with an anthology covering anything from the late '20s through the early '40s. If you're curious to hear him tangle with the more conventional turf of his peers, this is the place to turn. SKU: 1016974

Scenes From A Memory (Metropolis Part 2)
Dream Theater: James LaBrie (vocals); John Petrucci (guitar, background vocals); Jordan Rudess (keyboards); John Myung (bass); Mike Portnoy (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Theresa Thomason (vocals); Mary Canty, Shelia Slappy, Mary Smith, Jeanette Smith, Clarence Burke Jr., Carol Cyrus, Dale Scott (background vocals). Producers: Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci, Terry Brown. Engineers: Doug Oberkircher, Terry Brown. Recorded at Little Bear Studios, Suffern, New York and Metal Works Studios, Toronto, Canada between February & August 1999. "Metropolis Part I," a track featured on Dream Theater's breakthrough, IMAGES AND WORDS, left many progressive rock enthusiasts with what seemed like another unfinished chapter in a story never to be completed. Seven years and five albums later, Dream Theater returned to its majestic beginnings with METROPOLIS PART II--SCENES FROM A MEMORY. Keyboard virtuoso Jordan Rudess, who was a logical replacement for Derek Sherinian, revitalized the band's sound. Rudess's collaboration with guitarist John Petrucci and drummer Mike Portnoy stole the attention of Dream Theater fans in the instrumental project, LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT. METROPOLIS PART II is an epic concept album that makes a powerful artistic statement. The band is impressive in its ability to weave a suite of pieces together that share a common thread of recurring musical and lyrical themes similar to those first presented in "Metropolis I."The heart of the tale is revealed in "Fatal Tragedy," which centers on a murder mystery. The main character, Victoria Page, sees the man she once loved turning evil and in refusing his affections, she pays with her life. The lyrical point of view shifts from character to character, bringing about powerful results. SKU: 5063596

Older
OLDER is George Michael's first album of original material since 1990's LISTEN WITHOUT PREJUDICE VOL.1, and is the first full-length release of the DreamWorks SKG label. Personnel: George Michael (vocals, various instruments, programming); Hugh Burns (acoustic guitar); John Themis, Danny Jacobs, Alan Ross (guitar); Chris Cameron (strings, Fender Rhodes electric piano, keyboards); Phil Smith, Chris Davis, Andy Hamilton (saxophone); John Thirkell, Stuart Brooks (trumpet, flugelhorn); Steve Sidwell (trumpet); Fayyaz Virji (trombone); David Austin, Jon Douglas, Dave Clews (keyboards); Pete Gleadall, Steve McNichol (programming); Jo (background vocals). Producers: George Michael, Jon Douglas. Engineers include: Chris Porter, Paul Gomersall, Ren Swan. If George Michael soldhis soul to get out of his Sony contract, he must have found a new one in the DreamWorks studios. On his first album in six years--he spent the interim in court with his old employer, Sony--Michael's voice is velvet, and the tempos of his songs are mellow cloaks in which he wraps himself as he wanders up and down the smooth strip of soul. Most of the tunes are slow-burning, jazz-infused numbers, though there are a few notable exceptions: "Fastlove" is a playful disco send-up, and the last track, "Free," is a jazz instrumental turned into an ambient-dub track with record scratches and Middle Eastern overtones. "I'm looking older/But something good has happened to me," Michael croons on the title track. He's OLDER, and sounding better than ever. SKU: 1001155

Wild Wood
Personnel: Paul Weller (vocals, guitar, strings, harmonica, piano, Hammond organ, Mellotron, Moog, bass, percussion); Steve Craddock, Robert Howard, Dave Liddle (guitar); Jacko Peake (flute, horns); Helen Turner (organ); Mick Talbot (Hammond organ); Max Beesley (Wurlitzer, percussion, background vocals); Brendan Lynch (MiniMoog, Mellotron, Stylophone, percussion); Marco Nelson (bass, background vocals); Yolanda Charles (bass); Steve White (drums); Dee C. Lee, Simon Fowler (background vocals). Recorded at The Manor, Oxford, England from April to May, 1993. Arguably Weller's best solo album, and certainly the one where all his influences first congealed into something uniquely hisown. WILD WOOD's template would once again seem to be Traffic--Weller's surprisingly soulful vocals most often recall a gruffer version of Steve Winood, and there's even a jazz flute in the concluding "Holy Man" jam. Weller's songs however, are not so easily pigeonholed; an achingly beautiful acoustic ballad like "Country," for example, owes a stylistic debt to no one except its composer. SKU: 1045168

Unplugged...and Seated
Personnel includes: Rod Stewart (vocals, banjo); Don Teschner (guitar, violin, mandolin); Ron Wood, Jeff Golub, Jim Cregan (guitar); Phil Parlapiano (accordion, mandolin); Kevin Savigar (piano, organ, accordion); Chuck Kentiss III (piano, organ); Carmine Rojas (bass); David Palmer (drums); Dorian Holly, Darryl Phinnessee, Fred White (background vocals). Recorded live in Hollywood in February 1993. UNPLUGGED...AND SEATED is part of MTV's "Unplugged" series. By the time MTV got around to taping an Unplugged special with Rod Stewart, the singing soccer fanatic had spent most of the '80s and early '90s churning out albums full of glossy pop songs. UNPLUGGED...AND SEATED found Stewart going back to his earlier material where soul, folk and rock blended together into something special. Stewart made these chestnuts more authentic by reuniting with old mate Ronnie Wood. Backed by a string section, vocalists, and a couple of pianos, Stewart dug deep into his catalog for folk-flavored favorites such as "Handbags And Gladrags," "Mandolin Wind" and "Cut Across Shorty." Rod the Mod kept the randiness factor present by including "Hot Legs" and "Tonight's The Night" in this set, along with covers of some of his favorite songwriters including Cat Stevens ("The First Cut Is The Deepest"), Tim Hardin ("Reason To Believe") and Van Morrison ("Have I Told You Lately"). Playing with Wood, Stewart sounds invigorated, and sturdy warhorses suchas "Every Picture Tells A Story" and "Stay With Me" take on new legs. SKU: 1004949

Live And Swingin' (The Ultimate Rat Pack Collection/+DVD)
Full performer name: Frank Sinatra/Dean Martin/Sammy Davis Jr. Full title: The Ultimate Rat Pack Collection: Live And Swingin'. This release includes a bonus DVD. Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr. (vocals). Producers: Robert Finkelstein, Charles Pignone, Elliot Mazer. Recorded live at The Villa Venice Night Club, Chicago, Illinois between November 26 & December 2, 1962. Includes liner notes by Bill Zehme. In 2001, THE RAT PACK LIVE AT THE SANDS was released, a live album from the early 1960s capturing the onstage antics of notorious cohorts Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Dean Martin. Two years later, THE ULTIMATE RAT PACK COLLECTION picks up where its predecessor left off. Disc One features a different live recording from the same era, capturing the trio in all their martini-swilling glory. The second disc is a DVD of another performance from a few years later. Even though the video finds the Rat Pack nearing the end of its tether in 1965, the chemistry and onstage dynamism is just as remarkable. Both discs feature the three singers performing both alone and together, and engaging in plenty of clowning around with each other. The DVD is heavier on classic Sinatra tunes, but the first disc has even more Dean-and-Frank schtick. That said, the footage of Sammy running through "One for My Baby" in the styles of about a dozen different singers is an uproarious moment, and to see the three men in action together is to truly understand the nature of both their artistic powersand their personal appeal. Four
Blues Traveler: John Popper (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Chan Kinchla (acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin, background vocals); Bobby Sheehan (bass, background vocals); Brendan Hill (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Jono Manson (vocals); Warren Haynes (guitar); Peter Malcolm Kavakavich (tambora, shruti box); Chuck Leavell, Paul Shaffer (keyboards); Bashiri Johnson (percussion). Producers: Steve Thompson, Michael Barbiero. Recorded at Bearsville Studios, Woodstock, New York. "Run-Around" won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Already established as a reputable act due to years of drop-dead touring, FOUR is the album that has broken Blues Traveler through to widespread popularity, becoming their first best-seller. Singer John Popper's frenetic harp coupled with guitarist Chan Kinchla's chicken-scratch rhythm playing make for a potent one-two punch that goes far in distinguishing BluesTraveler from the hordes of similar "Grateful Dead Baby Bands" that have cropped up in recent years. And while the band still retains that musical formula, FOUR explores other levels of their organic boogie. Scaling back the over-extended jams of their previous records, Blues Traveler has returned as a much leaner unit. Opening with the airy "Run-Around," FOUR dabbles with pretty ballads ("Look Around") as well as more upbeat and sunny fare ("Hook"). Guest Warren Haynes' guitar playing gives "The Mountain Wins Again" a heavy Allman Brothers flavor, and Paul Shaffer's funky organ fills on "Stand" tango with Popper's scat-like vocal delivery. The road is still Blues Traveler's true calling--it is, after all, where they became the dynamic musical force they are today. But for a studio album made by an acknowledged live band, FOUR makes for one helluva rest stop. SKU: 1004885

I'm Back
Includes liner notes by Judge Al Bradley. The godfather of funk is still feelin' good at the edge of the new millenium with I'M BACK. While James updates his sound on cuts like "Break Away" with mellow synthesizers and R&B a capella quartet-style backing harmonies, his roots are still showing--check out the rollicking rendition of his staple "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag." James further changes things up with the easygoing, bluesy "What It Takes" (his unidentified duet partner here is one funky songstress) and some touching warbling on the classic "Lucky Old Sun." The album continues on a surprisingly slow-groovingnote with the Gospel-infused instrumental "Every Part Of My Heart" and James' amorous ruminations on "Eden." For all the stylistic variations though, fans of the signature funk guitar vamps, crisp horn blasts and wails and shouts that make this man's music will not be disappointed. SKU: 1016960

Mescalero
ZZ Top: Bill F. Gibbons (vocals, guitar); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank Beard (drums). Recorded at Foam Box Recordings, H-Town, Texas. Still chugging along three decades after members of Houston garage bands the Moving Sidewalks and the American Blues united in 1970, this little ol' band from Texas makes its mark on 2003 with MESCALERO, the trio's first album in four years. As one of the first blues-rock power trios to fuse synthesizers with their straightforward brand of boogie, ZZ Top continues down this same path throughout these 16 songs. The difference is the Tex-Mex border brushed-on flavor, be it the bilingual title cut, the techno-mariachi that is the Spanish-sung "Que Lastima," or the Dia de Los Muertos-inspired cover art. Also present and accounted for is the group's salacious sense of humor, which is readily apparent in the straightforward shuffle "Buck Nekkid" and equally rocked-out "Piece." Longtime fans of Memphis soul best known for their cover of Sam & Dave's "I Thank You," ZZ Top returns to the Stax/Volt canon for a crack at Lowell Fulsom's "Tramp," which is given a quirky reading thanks to the use of a filter on the vocals. Also tacked onto thelast track is an uncredited cover of "As Time Goes By," sung by a gravelly sounding Billy Gibbons over slack-key-inspired guitar accompaniment. SKU: 1082872
