Purpendicular
Deep Purple: Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord, Steve Morse, Ian Paice. Recorded at Greg Rike Productions, Orlando, Florida. Time has not slowed down English hard rock veterans Deep Purple, as is evident on PURPENDICULAR. Lineup changes are nothing new to Deep Purple, yet the band has managed to create high-quality material regardless of who is in the group. The classic personnel are intact here, with the exception of Ritchie Blackmore, who has been replaced by ex-Dixie Dregs and Kansas guitarist Steve Morse. It is the addition of Morse that takes theband into uncharted territory. The shredding opening licks of "Vavoom: Ted the Mechanic" show Morse's immediate influence. The song has a fantastic bass groove, courtesy of Roger Glover. The atmospheric and melodic "Loosen My Strings," with its piano background, is a beautiful tune. Melody is an integral part of PURPENDICULAR in such songs as "A Touch Away" (a touching ballad) and "The Aviator." On "Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming," vocalist Ian Gillan does just that, unleashing his trademark wail. "Soon Forgotten" showcases Jon Lord's formidable Hammond bashing, while "Somebody Stole My Guitar" shows what Mr. Morse can do. PURPENDICULAR is an adventurous outing that explores some new directions for the band. But after one listen, longtime fans will still be seeing Purple. SKU: 1003787

Never Mind The Bollocks Heres The Sex Pistols
The Sex Pistols: Johnny Rotten (vocals); Steve Jones (guitar); Sid Vicious, Glen Matlock (bass); Paul Cook (drums). Put this alongside BLONDE ON BLONDE and REVOLVER as an album that changed the face of rock forever. Along with the Clash and the Damned, the Sex Pistols were one of the first bands to channel the anger of dole-queue '70s Britain through a fierce musical amalgam of pub rock, the Stooges and the New York Dolls. Despite their influences, Johnny Rotten and companycreated something utterly unlike what had come before. Their anarchist/nihilist attitude, reflected in tunes like "Anarchy in the U.K." and "No Feelings" spoke to a new generation of kids, more profoundly disaffected than any other in the 20th century. Rotten's snarling, distinctly British delivery of his agitational lyrics made Dylan sound like Mario Lanza, and the pile-driver guitars of Glen Matlock and Steve Jones move the songs along like a well-oiled but ornery machine. For all their iconoclasm, though, the Pistols were far more indebted to traditional pop song format (and dynamics) than most of the punk bands that followed in their wake. Consequently, for all their anger and urgency, such songs as "Submission" and "Pretty Vacant" enter the ear easily, only beginning to cause real internal damage once they get into your gut. One of the most essential rock albums of all time. SKU: 1004195

New Favorite
Alison Kraus & Union Station: Alison Krauss (vocals, fiddle, viola); Ron Block (vocals, guitar, banjo); Dan Tyminski (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Barry Bales (vocals, bass); Jerry Douglas(dobro). Additional personnel includes: Larry Atamanuik (drums, percussion). Recorded at Seventeen Grand Recording, Nashville, Tennessee. NEW FAVORITE won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. "The Lucky One" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by A Duo Or Group With Vocal and for Best Country Song. NEW FAVORITE finds Alison Krauss & Union Station continuing to solidify the bridge between the worlds of pop and bluegrass that they helped forge in the '90s. Krauss's crystalline vocals continue to induce goosebumps and bring to mind a young Dolly Parton on the delicate ballads "I'm Gone," "Crazy Faith," and "Momma Cried" along with more traditional-sounding fare like the high lonesome "Take Me For Longing." With its musical democracy still intact, Union Station also delights with new member Jerry Douglas' fleet-fingered instrumental workout "Choctaw Hayride" and a dark-hued interpretation of the traditional "The Boy Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn" delivered by Dan Tyminski's supple tenor. (Tyminski's vocals may strike a recognizable note as his voice replaced George Clooney's on "I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow," a musical centerpiece on the O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? soundtrack). Once again Krauss takes a non-traditional bluegrass approach towards picking material. Among the artists interpreted are legendary country-folk banjo player Dock Boggs ("Bright Sunny South"), '70s singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg ("Stars"), fellow New Traditionalists Gillian Welch and David Rawlings (the title track), and Rounder labelmate Robert Lee Castleman ("Let Me Touch You For Awhile," "The Lucky One"). Pressure Chief
Cake: John McCrea (vocals, acoustic guitar, keyboards, percussion); Gabriel Nelson, Xan McCurdy (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, keyboards, bass guitar, drums, background vocals); Vincent Di Fiore (melodica, trumpet, keyboards, percussion, background vocals). Engineers: Cake; Patrick Olguin; Mark Needham. "Idiosyncratic alternative pop" immediately comes to mind when trying to describe Cake to the uninitiated. On the band's fifth album, PRESSURE CHIEF, John McCrea and company continue down the same creative path with their tried-and-true knapsack of sonic elements--McCrea's deadpan phrasing, sprinklings of trumpet, and off-kilter hooks that manage to work in spite of themselves. Fueled by its frontman's progressive views on everyday life, this Sacramento quartet takes aim at a depleted ozone layer (the faux-punk-meets-Kraftwerk "Carbon Monoxide"), the intrusiveness of modern technology (a jittery, keyboard-laden "No Phone"), and society's prevailing "get-it-now" sentiments (the loping ""Waiting"). McCrea also tries his hand at legit singing, and he ends up sounding sincere, whether it's on the R.E.M.-like "She'll Hang the Baskets" (featuring guest guitarist Chuck Prophet) or a heartfelt walk through Bread's 1970s nugget "The Guitar Man," adding yet another quirky cover choice to the group's pantheon. Oddball yetendearing, PRESSURE CHIEF furthers Cake's successful pursuit of loose and non-conformist pop music. SKU: 6572799

Momentum Space
Full performer name: Dewey Redman/Cecil Taylor/Elvin Jones. Personnel: Dewey Redman (tenor saxophone); Cecil Taylor (piano); Elvin Jones (drums). Recorded at Avatar Recording Studio, New York, New York on August 4 & 5, 1998. Includes liner notes by Cecil Taylor, Dewey Redman and Philippe Carles. Few names conjure the ideal of sonic adventurousness as distinctly as those of Dewey Redman, Cecil Taylor, and Elvin Jones. With MOMENTUM SPACE, this explosive triumvirate comes together to present an uncommonly challenging and intriguing recording. At every turn, Redman's expressive wails, Taylor's dynamic explorations, and Jones' bombastic thunder seem to challenge the very laws of nature. Indeed, what we hear are three musical forces converging as one, pushing, pulling, blasting, and pounding their way into uncharted territory. The opening "Nine," an eleven-minute wall of sound that proceeds to shake the foundations of all you hold dear, should be enough to clear away any preconceptions. "Bekei," Jones' staggering solo piece, is an inspiring percussive statement that only a master of his magnitude could proclaim. The Redman/Jones duet "Spoonin" blasts us with the spirit of Coltrane before Taylor leads us on a solo journey of the imagination with "Life As." "It" and the epic "Is" are much too complex to explain withwords, but the bizarre sounds that Redman produces on the brief "Dew" can be described with but one: unforgettable. SKU: 6535040

OK Computer
Radiohead: Thom Yorke (vocals); Jonny Greenwood, Ed O'Brien, Colin Greenwood, Phil Selway. Additional Personnel: Adam Cummings (guitar). Engineers include: Nigel Godrich. OK COMPUTER was nominated for the 1998 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year and won the 1998 Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance. OK COMPUTER, Radiohead's third album, is the bombastic follow-up to 1995's sleeper hit THE BENDS, which left critics and listeners as impressed with the band's ability as they were curious about their potential. In spite of its technological-sounding title and apocalyptic sci-fi themes, OK COMPUTER is firmly grounded in the rock verities. Waves of guitars rage beneath the haunting melodies and near-hysterical fits of singer Thom Yorke. This complex, intense swarm of guitars is held aloft by a solid, inventive rhythm section and an impressive array of piano and keyboard textures. "Paranoid Android" is a six-minute-plus epic with alternating time signatures, wild dynamic shifts, drama and adrenaline to spare. "Let Down," with its double-tracked vocals and rhythmicthrob, may give a brief glimpse back at Radiohead's past, but at no point is OK COMPUTER anything but a hurtle forward. SKU: 1002142

Come Away With Me [SACD]
Personnel: Norah Jones (vocals, piano, Wurlitzer piano); Jesse Harris, Kevin Breit (acoustic & electric guitars); Tony Scherr (acoustic guitar, slide guitar); Adam Levy, Bill Frisell (electric guitar); Adam Rogers (guitar); Jenny Scheinman (violin); Sam Yahel (Hammond B-3 organ); Rob Burger (organ); Lee Alexander (bass); Brian Blade (drums, percussion); Dan Reiser, Kenny Wollesen (drums). Producers: Arif Mardin, Norah Jones, Jay Newland, Craig Street. Recordedat Sorcerer Sound, New York, New York and Allaire Studios, Shokan, New York. Norah Jones won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. COME AWAY WITH ME won the 2003 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical). "Don't Know Why" won the 2003 Grammy Awards for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Arif Mardin won the 2003 Grammy Award for Producer Of The Year (Non-Classical). A direct descendant from the pedigree of one of the 20th century's virtuosos, Norah Jones might not be on such a lofty artistic level as her dad Ravi Shankar, but certainly inherited some musical intuition from him. With nary a sitar nor raga within earshot, the young newcomer sounds very much an assimilated, western, 21st century pop-jazz singer. One thing that separates her from the pack is Ms. Jones' own piano stylings--not flashy, but deftly doubling or echoing her voice--that discreetly act as the glue holding together these airy, delicate, and beautiful arrangements. But the centerpiece is certainly the 22-year-old's confident-beyond-her-years vocal delivery in addition to a precise diction and velvety tone. Shades of Nina Simone, vintage Phoebe Snow, and a less beatnik Rickie Lee Jones are evident throughout as the young siren coolly sashays through mostly new material by guitarist-songwriter Jesse Harris (formerly of Once Blue) and a few choice covers. Veteran producer Arif Mardin frames a most notable debut with a translucent touch, and appearances by jazz heroes Bill Frisell and Brian Blade gild the lily. SKU: 1086954

Vitalogy
Pearl Jam: Eddie Vedder (vocals, guitar, accordion); Stone Gossard (vocals, guitar, Mellotron); Mike McCready (vocals, guitar, slide guitar); Jeff Ament (vocals, acoustic & electric bass); Dave Abbruzzese (drums). Additional personnel: Jack Irons (drums). Recorded in Seattle, Washington; Atlanta, Georgia; New Orleans, Louisiana. The CD version of VITALOGY includes a 32-page book; the cassette version includesa 16-page book. "Spin The Black Circle" won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. VITALOGY was nominated for 1996 Grammys for Album Of The Year and Best Rock Album. Wider in scope than any 70mm film, VITALOGY is the album on which Pearl Jam demands that the pigeonholing cease and desist once and for all. Whether by throwing meatless bones at some blindly zealous fans, or by moving their sound out of the grunge-land that they once called home, Vedder & Co. present this 55-minute tour de force as a treatise to win over the alternative non-believers and drop the excess baggage of fame. There's nothing fancy to VITALOGY: no ACHTUNG BABY or OUT OF TIME-like transformations, no post-modern gimmickry, no Steve Albini sound. Nevertheless, VITALOGY is revolutionary by Pearl Jam standards because it presents a collection of actually crafted songs, and succeeds in spotlighting the band's growing diversity. The proof is all over the place: "Corduroy" is an honest-to-goodness pop song, disguised in Seattle garb; "Not For You" brings the band's Crazy Horse fetish to the forefront, combining a folky melody with a ripping, electric arrangement; while "Bugs," "Aye Davanita," and "Hey Foxymophandlemama" are, respectively, an accordion-driven stomp, a raga-like instrumental, and a feedback-laden sound collage. All are delivered with such taste and assurance, that rather than sounding unnatural and forced, they only further illuminate Pearl Jam's artistic strides. Each helps make VITALOGY a proud notch on the band's growing musical belt. SKU: 1000491

Saturday Night Fever [Remastered]
Includes liner notes by John Tobler. Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Polygram Studios). SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER was originally released as a 2 LP set in late 1977. In 1978, it won a Grammy Award as Album Of The Year. "Night Fever" won a Grammy as Best Group Vocal Performance. The disco revival came in the mid-90s and white suits, dodgy shirt collars and trousers with massive flares were once again the order of the day. While this album's success drove people mad as punk's enemy in the late 70s, it is now seen as a great piece of musical history. The Bee Gees did write some meaningful songs (with very high voices) on this but there is further perfect disco soul from Yvonne Elliman ("If I Can't Have You"),Tavares and Kool And The Gang. This is one soundtrack that is better than the film, well, only just. SKU: 1014948

Uncollected [ECD]
Galaxie 500: Dean Wareham (vocals, guitar); Naomi Yang (vocals, bass guitar); Damon Krukowski (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Dave Rick (guitar); Ralph Carney (tenor saxophone). Liner Note Author: Byron Coley. Recording information: 1987 - 1990. One of the quintessential underground bands of the 1980s, Galaxie 500 were revered (by those fortunate enough to know about them) for their drowsy, atmospheric pop, warm instrumental textures, and Dean Wareham's reedy tenor and surreal lyrics. Fans who purchased the 1996 box set, which includes a disc of unreleased tracks, already own the material on UNCOLLECTED, a single-disc issue of those same cuts. UNCOLLECTED features the band's first demos, as well as outtakes, single tracks, and the video to the song "Blue Thunder." The band's '60s jangle-rock influences are heard on thesongs from their 1987 demo (especially "Walking Song"), and the evolution of their lush, plaintive aesthetic can be traced through 1988's "Oblivious" and "I Can't Believe it's Me." Highlights include a superb version of "Blue Thunder" with saxophone accompaniment from the BLUE THUNDER EP, and live covers of the Beatles and Jonathan Richman. An important, influential band--key to the development of dream pop and slowcore, Galaxie 500 have left fans needing more for years. UNCOLLECTED fulfills that need perfectly. SKU: 6567825

2000 Watts [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Tyrese, Sole, Jermaine Dupri, Snoop Dogg, Mr. Tan. Producers include: Babyface, Damon Thomas, Harvey Mason Jr., Jermaine Dupri, Rodney Jenkins. Former child star Tyrese (a native of the Watts district of LA, hence the title) has come up with a slinky selection of contemporary R&B that'll be sure to win him a place in the hearts of aficionados of after-hours crooning everywhere. 2000 WATTS rarely strays from its well-oiled, seductive path, even with an explosively sexy song such as "Off the Heazy," and that's to Tyrese's credit. Such low-key, smooth, and erotic songs as "Housekeepin'" and "BringYou Back My Way" will go far to cement Tyrese's claim as a contemporary pretender to Al Green's pre-gospel lover-man title. Though "I Like Them Girls" isn't exactly subtle, its incredibly catchy chorus sticks with you long after 2000 WATTS has meandered off in the general direction of the boudoir. SKU: 1066144

Modern Classics
Personnel: Paul Weller (vocals, guitar, piano, electric piano, Wurlitzer piano, organ, Mellotron, Moog & Mini-Moog synthesizers, novatron, bass, percussion); Chris Bangs (various instruments); Carleen Anderson (vocals); Steve Cradock, Dr. Robert (guitar, bass, background vocals); The Wired Strings (strings); Mark Nelson (sitar, bass); Jacko Peake (flute, saxophone); Brendan Lynch (accordion); Mick Talbot (Fender Rhodes); Helen Turner (organ, novatron); Max Beasley (organ); Brendan Lynch (Mellotron, Mini-Moog synthesizer, cyremin); Yolanda Charles (bass); Steve White (drums, percussion); Simon Fowler (background vocals). Producers: Brendan Lynch, Paul Weller, Chris Bangs. For the U.S. market, the word "classics" is perhaps employed here with a certain irony, given that the vastmajority of American listeners continue to turn the proverbial deaf ear to Weller's work. (of course, back in England, where he's a god, of course, these songs really were hits.) In any case, MODERN CLASSICS collects the best cuts from Weller's four solo albums released between 1992 and '97, the period when the former Jam-meister finally forged a coherent style out of his love for late-'60s artists like Traffic, the Small Faces, the Move, et al. What's particularly impressive is how the whole thing coheres. Despite the varying recording locations, dates, and personnel, the songs here sound like they were all bashed at one marathon all-night session. SKU: 1039177
