Everything Playing
The Lovin' Spoonful: John Sebastian, Jerry Yester, Steve Boone, Joe Butler. Originally released on Kama Sutra (8061). Includes liner notes by Michael Hill. This 1968 album was essentially their last, as founder and leader John Sebastian was to depart after its completion. EVERYTHING PLAYING has a relaxed, almost off-the-cuff feeling to it. Original member Zal Yanovsky was gone and his replacement, Jerry Yester, along with bass player Steve Boone and drummer Joe Butler all brought the first non-Sebastian originals to appear on a Lovin' Spoonful album. In Sebastian's shadow their songs are pleasant album cuts, clearly not sounding like chart-toppers and not released as singles. Sebastian's own "Six O'Clock" and "She IsStill A Mystery" were his last hits with the band (and the end of their days on the top forty). SKU: 1080793

Greatest Hits
Personnel includes: Bjork (vocals); Graham Massey, Mark Bell, Guy Sigsworth, Matthew Herbert, Matmos. Producers include: Bjork Gudmundsdottir, Nellee Hooper, Graham Massey, Mark Bell, David Arnold. Compilation producer: Jennifer Quinn. Throughout the '90s, Bjork established herself as a sui generis solo artist, unswervingly following her own idiosyncratic path after stepping out from the sheltering umbrella of Icelandic alt-rock stars the Sugarcubes. With her almost-alien little-girl-lost vocals, unconventional song structures, and adventurous production that married electronica, rock, and orchestral traditions, she became one of the decade's most striking artists. From the vantage point of 2002, after such classics as VESPERTINE have been unleashed on the world, a GREATEST HITS album certainlyseems in order, even if Bjork is far from the kind of conventional singles artist that the title might imply. From the feather-light strings-and-beats bliss of "All is Full of Love" through such gems as the syncopated, danceable "Big Time Sensuality" on through to the captivating closer, the glitchtronica-kissed "It's in Our Hands," we're given a portrait of an inspired, mercurial artist and the unfettered flight of her celebrated muse. Best Of Candi Staton, The
Includes liner notes by Bill Carpenter. Staton has always been a bit of a stylistic chameleon; she's sung straight gospel, southern soul, and R&B versions of country songs, but of course she's best known for her '70s stint as a disco diva. This best-of collection focuses mostly on her dance hits (like the title tune, memorably remade on the soundtrack to the 1996 version of ROMEO AND JULIET with Leonardo Di Caprio). But there's also a previously unreleased cheating song, "He's Making Love toYou," that's very much in her '60s style, and the concluding "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" is as thoroughly churchified as a gospel ballad can get. Any Given Sunday
So Oliver Stone has focused his subtle-as-Lawrence-Taylor-on-a-blindside-rush directorial style on the bone-crunching, hard-living, fast-paced world of professional football. That there would be a heavy-hitting soundtrack to accompany the film was about as inevitable as hearing "Rock & Roll Part 2" in a stadium or arena. For ANY GIVEN SUNDAY, the powers that be have put together a heady if predictable lineup of hip-hop and harder-edged rockers for a solid soundtrack to the Christmas, 1999 flick. To the soundtrack producers' credit, instead of just picking out the most hard-nosed rappers in order to compliment the sport presented, they took talent into account and selected an outstanding array of artists. From the formidable Atlanta pairing of Outkast and Goodie Mob on "Sole Sunday" to the reliably poppy-yet-powerful turn of one of the movie's stars--LL Cool J on "Shut 'Em Down" (no, not the PE tune)--there really is no weak track; even Jamie Foxx makes good (aided by Guru and Common) on the title track. The rock side is best represented bythe soundtrack's lead single, Hole's driving "Be a Man," a song good enough to have stood out on the group's highly acclaimed CELEBRITY SKIN. SKU: 1030325

She's The One (Original Soundtrack)
Full title: Songs And Music From The Motion Picture She's The One. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Tom Petty (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, piano, harpsichord, bass, tambourine, timpani); Mike Campbell (acoustic & electric guitars, piano, bass, marxophone); Benmont Tench (piano, organ); Howie Epstein (bass, background vocals). Additional personnel: Lili Haydn (violin); Michael Severens, Gerri Sutyak (cello); Curt Bisquera, Steve Ferrone, Ringo Starr (drums); Chris Trujillo (percussion); Lindsey Buckingham, Carl Wilson (background vocals). Producers: Rick Rubin, Tom Petty, Mike Campbell. Engineers: Jim Scott, Sylvia Massy. On their soundtrack to Edward Burns' film "She's The One," Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are as sharp as ever, executing smart, expertly crafted pop tunes studded with sparkling hooks and concise, memorable lyrics. The opener, "Walls (Circus)," sets the tone with twangy guitar and staccato '60s-style organ adorning an impossibly catchy song of love and acceptance that is philosophical yet totally unpretentious. From there, Petty and band glide easily from the raucous rave-up of "ZeroFrom Outer Space" to the heart-stoppingly beautiful, acoustic guitar-driven "Angel Dream" (presented in two different versions). Petty is a connoisseur of rock and roll, and he proves it here with two brilliantly chosen cover tunes: Lucinda Williams' "Changed The Locks" (curiously retitled to the present-tense "Change The Locks") and Beck's "Asshole." Petty stakes his claim to both with the help of his stalwart bandmates. Anyone who has ever appreciated Petty's songwriting gifts and the Heartbreakers' empathic accompaniment should receive this offering with open arms. SKU: 1001973

New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) [Remastered]
Additional personnel: Herbie Hancock (keyboards). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Simple Minds began their career indebted to Roxy Music, David Bowie and Magazine, but over successive releases emerged as a distinctive act. OnNew Gold Dream the group's ambitions came to full fruition, the awkward dissonance of early recordings replaced by a warm, textured sound. The content ranged from brash stadium rock to melodic ballad, but a singleness of purpose ensured such contrasts enhanced the set's overall cohesion. The quintet had never sounded so confident or assured and the resultant lush textures launched them into the international arena, fulfilling their undoubted promise. On "Promised You A Miracle," did Kerr really sing "guinea pigs are guinea pigs?" SKU: 1079130

Tonight I'm Yours [Remastered]
Personnel: Rod Stewart (vocals); Jim Cregan (guitar, background vocals); Jeff Baxter, Robin LeMesurier, Danny Johnson (guitar); Byron Berline (fiddle); Jimmy Zavala (harmonica, saxophone); Kevin Savigar, Duane Hitchings (keyboards); Jay Davis (bass); Carmine Appice (drums, background vocals); Tony Brock (percussion, background vocals); Paulinho da Costa (percussion); Tommy Vig (tubular bells); Linda Lewis, The Penetcostal Community Choir, Penny Jones (background vocals). Recorded at The Record Plant, Los Angeles, California. All tracks have been digitally remastered. From the perky opening strains of the title track, TONIGHT I'M YOURS isn't a difficult album to place in time--it was recorded in 1981, and sounds it from head to toe. Though this might count against a lesser artist, we're talking about Rod Stewart, whose every artistic move has been firmly set in (and often crucial to) the period which produced it (want proof? Imagine the 70's without "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?.") TONIGHT's tight, hard-panned production techniques and electronic instrumentation only serve to endear it to the listener, from the highly stylized, very soulful cover of "How Long" to the album's biggest track--the anthemic, unabashedlysynth-driven "Young Turks," and onto the album's strangest choice of cover version--a delicate, reverent reading of Dylan's "Just Like A Woman." The album closes with the inspiring epic "Never Give Up On A Dream," co-penned with Bernie Taupin, and dedicated to cancer-stricken marathoner Terry Fox. SKU: 1053843

Recorded at Caribbean Sound Basin, Trinidad, West Indies; D.A.R.P. Studios, Atlanta, Georgia; Daddy's House Recording Studios and The Hit Factory, New York, New York. As in the case of Teddy Riley or Dr. Dre, it is not unlikely for a producer-extraordinaire to step to the forefront as an artist. With the release of NO WAY OUT, Sean "Puffy" Combs adds to an extensive musical resume. From hip-hop dancer to hit-making producer to CEO of Bad Boy Entertainment to recording artist, Puff Daddy has proven to be a man of many talents. Puffy's debut as an entertainer showcases both hardcore ("It's All About The Benjamins Remix") and mainstream ("Do You Know?") hip-hop songs. As a producer, Puff Daddy is the master when it comes to sampling old records and turning them into new hits, as he does with histribute to The Notorious B.I.G. on "I'll Be Missing You," which incorporates the music from The Police's "Every Breath You Take." Other songs give Puffy a chance to test his own rap skills, like "Is This The End?" which matches him up with the world's fastest rapper, Twista. SKU: 1003068

Today
Solo performer: Mississippi John Hurt (vocals, guitar). All tracks have been digitally remastered. The '60s revived the careers of many early bluesmen, but none so dramatically as that of Mississippi John Hurt. Hurt recorded a few brilliant sides in the '20s, then ostensibly disappeared off the face of the Earth until folk musician Tom Hoskins went looking for him in 1963. At the age of 70, Hurt began one of the greatest comebacks in music history. From his first '60s shows until his death in 1966, Hurt was a popular mainstay of the folk-music circuit. TODAY! demonstrates why the audiences loved him so. More a melodic songster than a traditional bluesman, Hurt has a great deal in common with '60s folk musicians-many of whom he inspired. Hurt's dexterous and beautiful finger-picking style provided aspiring folk performers with a template, as did his warm and gentle stage presence. All these elements are amply evident on TODAY!, on which Hurt turns in definitive performances of "PayDay," "Louis Collins," "Spike Driver's Blues," and "Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor." He even takes a rare (and successful) turn at slide guitar on "Talking Casey." Like all of Hurt's Vanguard albums, TODAY! is an absolutely essential document of a great American artist. SKU: 1004472

Anagrama
Sonic Youth: Thurston Moore, Lee Renaldo (guitar); Kim Gordon (bass); Steve Shelley (drums). The first in a series of three similarly-packaged EPs produced by New York guitar-noise specialist Wharton Tiers, ANAGRAMA defiantly reclaims Sonic Youth's avant-garde credentials after a decade ofincreasingly pop-oriented releases. The album returns to ideas first hinted at in guitarists Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo's days playing with sonic extremist Glenn Branca in New York's Lower East Side in the early 80s. ANAGRAMA consists of four lengthy pieces: "Anagrama," "Improvisation Ajoutee," "Tremens" and the appropriately-titled "Mieux: De Corrosion." The band's approach here combines prepared, looped, and electronically-treated guitars in ways that recall both minimalist composers such as Philip Glass or Steve Reich and such contemporary soundscape artists as Spectrum and Experimental Audio Research, with a few dashes of Hendrixian heroics tossed in for good measure. Fans of Sonic Youth's poppier work might pass, but listeners with an interest in sound for sound's sake will find much to appreciate. SKU: 5068629
