4 Way Street
This re-issue of the 2-LP setincludes 4 bonus tracks: "King Midas In Reverse," "Laughing," "Black Queen" and a 3-song Neil Young medley. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young: David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, Neil Young (vocals, guitar). Additional personnel: Calvin Samuels (bass); Johnny Barbata (drums). Recorded live at the Fillmore East, New York City on June 2-7, 1970; The Chicago Auditorium, Chicago, Illinois on July 5, 1970; The Forum, Los Angeles, California from June 26-28, 1970. 4 WAY STREET caught Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young on their 1970 concert tour at the height of their success. Other than one or two overlong efforts, "Southern Man" and "Carry On," the album is varied and exciting even with the chat. "Sheer profundity," says Crosby about Nash. "Go get it Stephen" says Nash about Stills and even Young delivers "we've had our ups and downs, but we're still playing together." Crosby is excellent on "Triad," Nash passes on "Chicago" and on this reissue Stills and Young delight respectively with "Black Queen" and "The Loner/Cinnamon Girl/Down By The River." By the time the album came out, however, Young had already left the group, and Crosby, Stills & Nash began to work on solo and duo projects. SKU: 1001419

Star
Belly: Tanya Donelly (vocals, guitar); Thomas Gorman (guitar, organ); Fred Abong (bass); Chris Gorman (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Chick Graning (guitar, slide guitar, vocals), John Douglass (violin). Recorded at Sound Emporium Studios, Nashville, Tennessee and Amazon Studios, Liverpool, England. All songs written by Tanya Donelly except "White Belly" (Donelly/Abong). With their jangling, overdriven guitars and breathless, mysterious vocals, Belly suggests the hard/soft edge of electric girl groups and power pop bands like The Bangles, The Pixies, The Breeders and Throwing Muses (with a dark hint of early Lou Reed & The Velvet Underground). Vocalist Tanya Donelly, formerly of The Breeders and Throwing Muses, joined forces with the Gorman brothers Thomas and Chris (on guitars and drums respectively) and bassist Fred Abong to launch Belly. On STAR they revel in eastern overtones, psychedelic musings and a folk-rock-styled loss of innocence, even as they chart a more modern musical course with their ambivalent love songs, pained recollections and distinctly dissonant style of lyricism. Echoes of childhood remembrances and bad dreams pepper the soundscape on STAR,such as the evocative overture "Someone To Die For," and the menacing "Angel" and "Dusted" (where the crunching cathedral chords suggest R.E.M). This hypnotic sense of rural dread, alienation and sublimated sensuality permeates every second of STAR, as Donelly's ruminations brush dangerously against the Gorman Brothers' jarring rhythms, particularly on the anthemic "Feed The Tree." Belly was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Best New Artist." STAR was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Best Alternative Music Album." SKU: 1007348

Traveling Miles
Personnel: Cassandra Wilson (vocals, acoustic guitar); Angelique Kidjo (vocals); Steve Coleman (alto saxophone); Olu Dara (cornet); Vincent Henry (harmonica); Regina Carter (violin); Stefon Harris (vibraphone); Cecilia Smith (marimba); Eric Lewis (piano); Kevin Breit (acoustic, electric, resophonic & e-bow guitars, electric mandolin, mandocello, bazouki); Marvin Sewell (acoustic, classical & electric guitars, bazouki); Doug Wamble (acoustic guitar); Pat Metheny (classical guitar); Dave Holland, Lonnie Plaxico (acoustic bass); Marcus Baylor (drums, percussion); Perry Wilson (drums); Jeffrey Haynes, Mino Cinelu (percussion). Recorded at The Hit Factory, New York, New York in December 1997 and Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York in May and September 1998. TRAVELING MILES was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. Throughout the '90s the smoky-voiced contralto Cassandra Wilson has shunned piano accompaniment in favor of close-miked acoustic guitars, evoking a moodily sensual atmosphere in which pop, blues, country and straight jazz vocals all merge together. It helps that Wilson has a distinctly Southern blues cast to her singing, a quality immediately apparent on "Run The Voodoo Down," the funky opener to TRAVELING MILES, her impeccably self-produced homage to Miles Davis. As is her wont, Wilson has chosen to mix it up on this tribute, setting lyrics to Davis compositions such as "Blue In Green," "Tutu" and "ESP" while reprising two favorite Miles covers, "Someday My Prince Will Come" and Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." The singer also contributes some of her own welcome originals such asthe poppish "Right Here, Right Now," which itself sounds like a tribute to Joni Mitchell, another mentor-spirit hovering over the proceedings. The set closes with a playful reprise of "Voodoo," featuring a sisterly duet with African singer Angelique Kidjo, who sounds right at home. SKU: 1001182

Field Studies
Quasi: Sam Coomes, Janet Weiss. Additional personnel: Elliot Smith. Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss are Quasi, one of indie-rock's favorite ex-couples. A drum and keyboard duo, they turn out pop confections that are sweet on the outside, bitter on the inside. Though Quasi's music has its roots inearly-'70s pop (there are even traces of the Captain and Tennile), there's nothing cloying or insincere about it. Coomes' skill at chromatic harmony, as well as the sound of his fuzz-toned Roxichord help set the pair apart from the army of three-chord wizards, producing a sound not unlike that of Built to Spill. First Day, The
Personnel: David Sylvian (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Trey Gunn (vocals, Chapman stick); Ingrid Chavez (vocals); Robert Fripp (guitar, Frippertronics); Jerry Marotta (drums, percussion); Marc Anderson (percussion); David Bottrill (programming). Recorded at Dreamland Studios, Woodstock, New York and Kingsway Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana. The pooling of Sylvian's silken vocals--not to mention his multi-instrumental talents--with the fiery dexterity of Fripp gave all indications of a marriage made in progressive heaven. THE FIRST DAY takes some time to gel, but it's worth the wait. Fripp lays down some of his most scorching licks in ages, running through a broad synopsis of his guitar phrasings--burning RED-era blast-offs, contrapuntal DISCIPLINE-era inclinations, and stormy tides of distortion, tension, and release--sometimes all in the space of a single track (witness the 17-minute progressive funk of "Darshan"). Furthermore, Sylvian and Fripp chose to cover a wide range of styles--from the aforementioned "Darshan" to intergalactic space music ("Bringing Down the Light") and aggressive, Rain Tree Crow-inspired exotic-pop ("God's Monkey"). Supporting the dynamics of the duo are drummer Jerry Marotta, doing his best Bruford imitation, filling vacant holes within the sonic perimeter and spinning out diametrically opposed time signatures at will; stick bassist Trey Gunn, providinga solid, if cushiony, bottom end; and synth programmer David Bottrill. THE FIRST DAY could very well take its place amongst Sylvian and Fripp's best work, and, like a fine wine, the album only improves with age. SKU: 1004260

Tattoo You
Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Keith Richards, Ron Wood (vocals, guitar); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel includes: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone). Digitally remastered by Bob Ludwig (Gateway Mastering Studios). After bum-rushing the '80s with EMOTIONAL RESCUE, the Stones released TATTOO YOU, the second half of a potent one-two album punch that showed the band asserting themselves as they entered their third decade of music-making. Essentially made up of songs dating as far back as 1972 sessions for GOATS HEAD SOUP, the Stones' 1981 release is still a potent slabof swagger and sass. "Hang Fire" is a tight two-minute and twenty second redefinition of surf music, and "Start Me Up" is classic Stones, replete with Jagger's sexual braggadocio and Keith's patented "Honky Tonk Women"-style riffs. The bluesy shuffle that is "Black Limousine" is only surpassed by the cocky "Little T & A," sung by an endearingly raspy Keith Richards. Most impressive on TATTOO YOU is the wistful "Waiting On A Friend," featuring jazz giant Sonny Rollins wailing away on his saxophone as the song fades out. SKU: 1005470

Sea Change
Personnel includes: Beck (vocals, acoustic guitar & electric guitars, banjo, keyboards, synthesizer, glockenspiel, percussion); Smokey Hormel (electric guitar, acoustic slide guitar, bamboo saxophone, piano); Jason Faulkner (electric guitar); Roger Mannning (banjo, Indian banjo, Wurlitzer piano, harmonium, clavinet, syntesizer, glockenspiel, percussion, background vocals); Nigel Godrich (keyboards, percussion); Justin Meldal-Johnsen (electric bass, upright bass, percussion, background vocals); Joey Waronker (drums, percussion); James Gadson (drums). SEA CHANGE was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album. Though 1998's MUTATIONS was the closest Beck had come at the time to conventional (read: non-ironic) troubadourisms, he quickly declared the album a detour and swiftly followed it up with the Prince-influenced about-face of MIDNITE VULTURES. It comes as something of a surprise, then, that he should focus his subsequent efforts on an unprecedentedly earnest singer-songwriter album like SEA CHANGE, which finds him purposefully peeling away his multiple levels of irony. Trumpeted in the press as a post-breakup album, SEA CHANGE has been called Beck's BLOOD ON THE TRACKS, and it's true that he'd never been anywhere near this emotionally naked before. Sonically, he seems to have (at least momentarily) laid aside his R&B/hip-hop aspirations in pursuit of a late-'60s/early-'70s folk-rock aesthetic. Several cuts have a lazy, Gram Parsons-like country-rock tinge. On "Round the Bend," he delivers a moody, string-swathed lament obviously modeled on Nick Drake's "River Man." While some might lament the departure ofthe word-spinning wiseguy, SEA CHANGE still seems an inevitable and important step in Beck's artistic maturation. SKU: 1075792

Run With The Pack
Bad Company: Paul Rodgers (vocals, guitar); Mick Ralphs (guitar); Boz Burrell (bass); Simon Kirke (drums). Recorded in Grasse, France in September 1975. Digitally remastered by George Marino. By the time of Bad Company's third release, RUN WITH THE PACK, the critics had begun hitting the band with charges concerning its formulaic approach. The assertion bears some validity but completely misses the only point that really counts: Bad Company had a damn good formula. It is impossible to refute the merits of album opener "Live for the Music." With a cutting three-chord riff and a tugging backbeat, Bad Company levels the overblown art rock of the '70s with a simple 4/4 kick to the gut.The album's highlights are numerous. The glorious "Silver, Blue and Gold," is possibly the band's best love song, while the title track travels on a lean path of bedrock. The band also takes a good whack at the Coasters' classic tale of hormonal surges, "Youngblood." SKU: 1002219

The Jimmy Giuffre 3: Jimmy Giuffre (tenor & baritone saxophones, clarinet); Jim Hall (guitar); Jim Atlas, Ralph Pena (bass). Recorded at Capitol Studios, Los Angeles, California on December 3, 4 & 24, 1956 and at Coastal Studios, New York, New York on December 2, 1957. Originally released on Atlantic (1254). Includes liner notes by Jimmy Giuffre and Gary Kramer. Reed player Jimmy Giuffre first debuted the Jimmy Giuffre 3 in 1956. This first configuration was a bit more conventional than what it would shortly become. Guitarist Jim Hall adds an elegance that at times feels folkish, and at other times like Bill Evan's classical piano leanings. Though the Jimmy Giuffre 3 lacked a drummer, the bass playing of either Ralph Pena or Jim Atlas anchors the trio. THE JIMMY GIUFFRE 3 is made up primarily of Giuffre originals, but several covers also grace the set, including a jubilant takeof "The Song Is You" and a wistful "Crazy She Calls Me." This is a quiet yet riveting album that seamlessly blends tradition with gently forceful modernism. SKU: 3101733

Selling England By The Pound
Genesis: Peter Gabriel (vocals, flute, oboe); Steve Hackett (guitar); Tony Banks (12-string guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Michael Rutherford (12-string guitar, bass); Phil Collins (drums, percussion, background vocals). Digitally remastered by Nick Davis, Goeff Callingham & Chris Blair. If one had to pare the prog-rock story down to a handful of essential albums, this would undoubtedly be one of them. SELLING ENGLAND was the culmination of allthat Genesis had been striving for since their late-'60s inception, the refinement of the vision that developed on TRESPASS, NURSERY CRYME and FOXTROT (somewhere in the world, there's been a second-wave prog outfit named after every one of these albums). The fusion of a complex classical mind with an electrified rock heart and pastoral folk spirit defined Genesis' anatomy, and never more effectively than on SELLING ENGLAND. Peter Gabriel's startlingly unpretentious tale-spinning is at its best on "The Battle of Epping Forest." Tony Banks elegant, sophisticated keyboard work is a key element of nearly every tune, and the electric/acoustic guitar tapestry woven by Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford is the perfect icing on the cake. Somewhat anomalous but entirely welcome is the Gabriel-era band's catchiest/quirkiest song "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)," the tale of a somewhat daft gardener. Phil Collins's lead vocal on the gorgeous acoustic ballad "More Fool Me" paints the shape of things to come. If you only buy one Genesis album, make it this one. SKU: 1002097

Foreigner 4 (Expanded Edition) [Remastered]
Foreigner: Lou Gramm (vocals, percussion); Mick Jones (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Rick Willis (bass, background vocals); Dennis Elliot (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Hugh McCracken (slide guitar); Mark Rivera (saxophone, background vocals); Junior Walker (saxophone); Michael Fonfara (keyboards); Tom Dolby, Larry Fast (synthesizer); Ian Lloyd "Mutt" Lange (background vocals). Producers: Robert John "Mutt" Lange, Mick Jones. Reissue producer: David McLees. Engineers: Dave Whittman, Tony Platt, Dennis Fitzmartin. Recorded at Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Bruce Pilato. Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch, Bill Inglot (Digiprep). Prior to the band's fourth release, the aptly titled 4, Foreigneragain sustained lineup changes. With the departures of second guitarist Ian McDonald and keyboardist Alan Greenwood, Foreigner became a quartet for the first time. The streamlining of the lineup helped bring about even greater commercial success for the band, as 4 became Foreigner's best-selling album ever, eventually selling well over six million copies in the U.S. alone. Its success can also be attributed to the presence of soon-to-be-superproducer John "Mutt" Lange. The presence of the gigantic hit ballad "Waiting for a Girl Like You" and the well-known rockers "Urgent" and "Juke Box Hero" certainly didn't hurt either. Looking back, 4 proved to be Foreigner's apex. SKU: 1071288

It's A Mystery
Personnel: Bob Seger (vocals, acoustic guitar, guitar, piano, synthesizer, bass, programming); Tim Mitchell, Michael Thompson, Fred Tackett (guitar); Rick Vito (slide guitar); Alto Reed (saxophone, baritone saxophone); George Bohannon (trombone); Roy Bittan (piano); Craig Frost (electric piano, keyboards, synthesizer, drum programming); Jeffry "C.J." Vanston (keyboards, synthesizer); Billy Payne (synthesizer); Chris Campbell, Bob Glaub, Buell Neidlinger (bass); Eddie Bayers, Harry Stinson, Kenny Aronoff, Russ Kunkel, Richard Hayward (drums); Gary Mallaber (brush snare); Scott Crago (bang drum); Samuel Clayton, Thomas Roady (maracas); Rudy Richman (percussion); Laura Creamer, Shaun Murphy, Rosemary Butler, Donny Gerrard, Luther Waters, Julia Waters, Oren Waters (background vocals). Engineers: David Cole, Shelly Yakus, Thom Panunzio. Bob Seger's first album came out way back in 1969, and since then the man has been reinventing and enforcing rock-music basics. His style of attack is heavily fortified in the rock idiom--the driving songs, the wary acoustic pangs, the gospel-infused backing vocals. Seger's rock is thetrue rock of the common man, without the pompous stadium extravagancies of many of his contemporaries. IT'S A MYSTERY shows that Seger still has his punch. There's the gritty tale of "Manhattan," with its dark corners and faceless overdoses, the lost frontier of "Rite Of Passage," and the pent-up evangelic charm of "Revisionism Street." A man who knows the history of great rock songs because he has written some of them, Seger is necessary at this point because of his knowledge of the scene he works in. "No one's memory is sacred here," he admits, "this is revisionism street." In an era when the box set is enabling rock's history to become available in text-book form, it is impressive to hear Bob Seger make the authentic and aware music of IT'S A MYSTERY. SKU: 1001847

JT [Remastered]
This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD Playable only on Super Audio CD players. Personnel: James Taylor (vocals, acoustic guitar); Linda Rondstadt, Carly Simon (vocals); Danny Kortchmar (guitar); Dan Dugmore (steel guitar); David Campbell (viola); David Sanborn (saxophone); Red Callender (tuba); Dr. Clarence McDonald (keyboards); Leland Sklar (bass); Russ Kunkel (drums, percussion); Peter Asher (percussion); Leah Kunkel (background vocals). JT finds a young James Taylor using a wide variety of molds into which he pours his folksy, easy-going style. His considerable songwriting skills are in full bloom, beginning with the jubilant "Your Smiling Face." Some very different ground is explored, however, with the funky "Honey, Don't Leave L.A." and the authentic country of "Bartender's Blues," onwhich Taylor gets a little help from Linda Ronstadt. It's his relationship with Carly Simon, though, that provides the fuel for Taylor's trademark lighter-than-air styling on "There We Are," "Another Grey Morning" and "Terra Nova," where Simon herself contributes a fine vocal performance. Taylor's lovely "Secret O' Life" is worth the price of admission for any singer-songwriter enthusiast. Other points of interest include Taylor's cover of the Jimmy Jones hit "Handyman" and the jazzy "Traffic Jam." Besides his GREATEST HITS package, this is one of J.T.'s most definitive works. It's Hard [Remastered]
The Who: Pete Townshend (vocals, guitar, keyboards, synthesizer); John Entwistle (vocals, horns, synthesizer, bass); Roger Daltrey (vocals); Kenney Jones (drums). Additional personnel: Andy Fairweather-Low (guitar); Tim Gorman (electric piano, organ, synthesizer). Producer: Glyn Johns Reissue producers: Jon Astley, Andy Macpherson. Recorded at Turn Up-Down Studios, Surrey, England, in June 1982 and live at Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto, Canada on December 16-17, 1982. Who fans tend to dismiss the two studio albums that the group made with former Small Faces drummer Kenny Jones after original drummer Keith Moon's death in 1978, but both FACE DANCES and IT'S HARD are solid rock albums that deserve to be judged on their respective merits. Recorded in 1982, IT'S HARD was the Who's final studio album and it is arguably the least rock-oriented album that The Who made. At the time this album was recorded, Pete Townshend was experimenting with writing in a variety of pop styles and both of the singles from IT'S HARD, "Athena" and "It's Hard" showcase an adventurous, near-theatrical approach that is actually well-suited to Roger Daltrey's somewhat dramatic singing. On other songs, like the ominous "Eminence Front" Townshend sticks to familiar Who territory. However, it is bassist John Entwistle who provides such Who-like rockers as "It's Your Turn." Now remastered and featuring four live bonus cuts, IT'S HARD is ready to rediscovered by Who fans who didn't give this album a fair chance back in 1982. SKU: 1003384

Recorded at Tambourine Studios #1 and #2, Malmo, Sweden. Sweden's Cardigans are steeped in a tradition of lush European pop that loosely stretches from the Beatles, through Abba, to Stereolab. But while FIRST BAND ON THE MOON, the quintet's second American album, hints at these touchstones and others like them, the muscular guitars that emanate from behind the Cardigans' expansive arrangements easily distinguish them from their forebears. Great pop hooks are, after all, a dime-a-dozen in Sweden; but pop power-chords are another matter. This is where the Cardigans' Black Sabbath influence emerges. No, we're not kidding. FIRST BAND ON THE MOON is the second consecutive record on which singer Nina Persson reconstitutes a song by Ozzy and company (in this case, "Iron Man") within a Swedish bubblegum context. The result is a first-rate gimmick--imagine, if you will, a female voice coyly stating, "I am iron man." Sabbath's aura can alsobe found invading the crispy guitar hook of "Your New Cuckoo," the bass throb behind the vibraphones on "Losers" and most clearly on the metallic Beatles feel of the verses to "Choke." This is certainly more than one would expect of another blonde, Swedish pop band. SKU: 1004665
