Phoenix Rising
The Temptations: Otis Williams, Ron Tyson, Barrington Henderson, Terry Weeks, Harry McGillberry (vocals). Additional personnel includes: Jerry Hey (conductor); Dennis Nelson, Sonny Lallerstedt (guitar); Ralph Morrison (violin); Theo Peoples (piano, keyboards); Jimi Fischer (guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, bass, drums, percussion, programming); Arther "Buster" Marbury III, Rex Rideout, Ronnie Garrett (keyboards, programming); Narada Michael Walden (drums, tamborine, programming). The Polyester Players: Greg Dalton (guitar); Don Hayes (alto saxophone); Jetro Da Silva (keyboards); Keith Rouster (bass); Takuya Hirano (percussion). Producers: Isaias Gamboa, Narada Michael Walden, Arthur Marbury III. Engineers include: Bob Tucker, Jimi Fifischer, David Frazer. PHOENIX RISING was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance. "Stay" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Hey, it worked for the Isley Brothers, why not for the Temptations? On PHOENIX RISING, the group that virtually defined the Motown sound in the '60s reinvents itself as a contemporary R&B band, complete with subtle drum machine tracks, tight, processed-sounding vocal harmonies and an almost obsessive focus on matters romantic. While David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks passed away long before the recording of this comeback album, the remaining original members, augmented by some talented new faces, keep the flame of soulful, heartfelt R&B alive. There's little evidence of the group's old sound on PHOENIX RISING, but that just means they're not prepared to condemn themselves to the oldies circuit. Think of this not as a continuation of the past, but as a new beginning.Did we mention that it beats the hell out of R. Kelly? SKU: 1005482

Golden State [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Bush: Gavis Rossdale (vocals, guitar); Nigel Pulsford (guitar); Dave Parsons (bass); Robin Goodridge (drums). Additional personnel: Eric Stefani, Paul Eastman (piano); Jamie Muhoberac (keyboards); Bon Harris (programming); Dave Sardy (sound effects). Recorded at Olympic Studio, London, England and Village Recorder, Los Angeles, California. By today's standards of music product packaging, the colored background and white lettering of Bush's new CD is decidedly simple and to the point. This approach neatly suits the raw, earthy vibe that stretches across GOLDEN STATE. Bush embodies the quintessence of stripped-bare grunge rock, and their prosperous survival in the post-grunge era is an impressive feat in and of itself. Leading off with "Solutions," principal writer Gavin Rossdale marks his territory with abstract metaphors. "The People That We Love" boasts an opening riff that wouldn't sound out of place in a Rage Against The Machine song, with lyrical fodder that warns against tearing down that which we hold most sacred. Midway through GOLDEN STATE, Bush rotates on its musical axis with business-as-usual tracks such as "Fugitive," "Hurricane," and "Reasons." No Doubt founder Eric Stefani graces the keyboards once again on "Out Of This World," while shades of Pearl Jam resonate in "Inflatable," a commentary on societal symbols that carry the naive expectation of purity and loyalty. Breaking away from the dominating mid-tempo tracks, "My Engine Is With You" is Bob Dylan stream-of-consciousness held hostage by raw, Soundgarden-like fury. In a saturated market of nu-metal and disposable pop, GOLDEN STATE is a warm sonic locale. SKU: 1067458

Doctor Came At Dawn
Smog: Bill Callahan (vocals, acoustic, electric, Spanish & slide guitars, mandolin, ukulele, fiddle, flute, saxophone, piano, organ, bass, drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Cynthia Dall (vocals). Includes liner notes by Bill Callahan. Bill Callahan, aka Smog, started taping his music in the dark, lo-fi insularity of his bedroom/basement/whatever, and it is remarkable to see his songs finally come out into the light. THE DOCTOR CAME AT DAWN peels away about 20 layers of the gray-noise fuzz usually found on Smog records, to reveal a wondrous, emotionally-direct batch of folk songs. Welcome to the hi-fi bedroom recordings of the spiritually unstable (and tales thereof). The sheer voyeurism of Callahan's acoustic-guitar-and-dread approach makes it difficult to listen to THE DOCTOR CAME AT DAWN at times. But that's also a mark of craftsmanship. Minor detailslike the use of singer Cynthia Dall as a foil on the gentle yet biting "Lize," the ambient synth that protrudes through every bit of "Spread Your Bloody Wings," or the tempo stumbles and sweeping strings on "You Moved In" (a Tom Waits-like tale of destitution), enhance the terror that creeps between the cracks of just about every song here. In that way, THE DOCTOR CAME AT DAWN is more like a Tricky record than anything else. SKU: 1001151

Invisible Touch
Genesis: Phil Collins (vocals, drums, percussion); Mike Rutherford (guitar, bass); Tony Banks (keyboards, synthesizer, bass). Recorded at the Farm, Surrey, England in 1985 & 1986. When Genesis reconvened to record 1986's INVISIBLE TOUCH, Phil Collins had a thriving solo career in both music and film, Tony Banks was recording movie scores, and Mike Rutherford was doing well in Mike & the Mechanics. Though it may have seemed impossible for the band to do better as a unit, this record spun off five Top 5 hits including the chart-topping title track. By tapping into a baby-boomer market that had lots of disposable income, Genesis became an adult contemporary god. INVISIBLE TOUCH represented the perfect hybrid that Genesis had been striving for: a pop sound mated with prog-rock flair. "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" demonstrated this perfectly. Despite being over eight minutes long, the topic of dysfunctional relationships had enough universal appeal in it to be used in a beer commercial. "Land of Confusion," a straightforward number commenting on the pervasive greed of the '80s was one of the album's hit singles along with the soft-rock ballad "Throwing It All Away." The Domino Suite ("In the Glow of the Night," "The Last Domino") may have been a nod to the band's more progressive past, but the sweeping instrumental, "The Brazilian," truly harkened back to Genesis'art-rock glory days. Best Of Culture Club, The
A cheap but serviceable budget compilation, THE BEST OF CULTURE CLUB wisely focuses on the group's best albums, 1982's KISSING TO BE CLEVER and 1983's COLOUR BY NUMBERS, including only one song each from the other two. 1986's "Move Away, " in particular, is a nice bit ofPhilly soul. The selection is excellent, gathering all of the group's A-sides to remind listeners that Culture Club were possibly the best pop-soul act of the early '80s. You can't argue with songs like "Time (Clock of the Heart)," or the moving piano ballad "Victims." SKU: 5049339

Body And Soul
Personnel includes: David Murray (tenor saxophone); Taana Running (vocals); Soneilius Smith (piano); Rashied Ali (drums). BODY AND SOUL finds David Murray working yet again with a Coltrane alumnus, this time the great drummer Rashied Ali. Typical of Murray's early '90s recordings, this is an intensely melodic record that swings with a vengeance. The title track features vocals and updated lyrics by Taana Running. Only a musician of Murray's caliber could breathe fresh air into such a timeworn standard, and Running's vocals are gorgeous. In an echo of the Rashied Ali-John Coltrane duo record INTERSTELLAR SPACE, Murray and Ali close BODYAND SOUL with a duo performance of "Cuttin' Corners," a tune written by the drummer. Murray's ability to pay tribute to the giants of jazz while remaining true to himself is again displayed here. BODY AND SOUL is an excellent transitional record that shows Murray between his late '80s post-bop period and his predominantly lyrical work of the '90s. SKU: 1019203

Street Dreams [PA]
Personnel: Fabolous, Snoop Dogg, Mike Shorey, Paul Cain, Styles, Jadakiss, Missy Elliot, M.O.P., Jadakiss, P.Diddy (rap vocals); Mary J. Blige, Jagged Edge, Lil' Mo, Ashanti (vocals); DJ Clue (spoken vocals); Dink (keyboards). Producers include: Rick Rock, Just Blaze, Precision, Omen, Kayne West. Fabolous scored rather sudden hip-hop celebrity with his catchy crossover hit "Can't Deny It" and the mega-successful album GHETTO FABOLOUS, with a style showcasing the perfect balance of the hardcore and the mainstream. However, while his rhymes were certainly palatable, his outer brash persona belied a subtle wit and unique way of looking at the world. His skills survive the sophomore jinx with the satisfying STREET DREAMS, a hypnotic tour through a familiar world, but with an appealingly organic tour guide. Fabolous opens STREET DREAMS with an intro that closes with the declaration "I'm here to shake up the world." His twisted outlook (rhymes like "phenomenon" and "Ramadan") flavors a solid record refreshingly rifewith self-reflective moments like "Call Me," one of the most conflicted takes on one-night-stands, where an admirer spouts "I like the video you played P-Diddy in" (his response "yeah, right"). Fabolous is an original rap artist reflecting a thug's poetic nature on STREET DREAMS. SKU: 1081492

Hunting High And Low
A-Ha: Morten Harket (vocals); Pal Waaktaar (guitar); Magne Furuholmen (keyboards). Additional personnel: Claire Jarvis (oboe). Producers: Tony Mansfield, Alan Tarney, John Ratcliff. The first album by the Norwegian trio of singer Morten Harket, songwriter Pal Waaktaar and keyboardist Mags will forever be known as the album that contains the intoxicating "Take On Me," one of the most famous and enduring "one-hit wonders" of the '80s. However, HUNTING HIGH AND LOW actually contains a second US Top 40 hit, "The Sun Always Shines On TV." In addition, even after those songsceased to receive airplay, A-Ha continued a long and successful career in Europe and elsewhere. Besides the two singles, the album contains the haunting title track, "Living A Boy's Adventure Tale," which comes across as a keyboard-heavy Scandinavian version of early U2, and the quirky "The Blue Sky," an arresting showcase for Harket's piercing falsetto. HUNTING HIGH AND LOW shows that there's much more to A-Ha than their memory in common pop history suggests. SKU: 1004105

Solo Monk [Remastered]
Solo performer: Thelonious Monk (piano). Recorded between October 31, 1964 and February 23, 1965. Originally released onColumbia (9149). Includes liner notes by Martin Williams, Peter Keepnews. From the virtuosic stride of Art Tatum to Sun Ra's brand of outer-limits logic, these sides read like a holistic jazz piano guide. Recorded during a 1964 run at California's "It Club," the performances contained herein offer an intensely personal experience of the "mad genius" alone at the keyboard. Most of the cuts clock in at less than three or four minutes. More than half of this material is standards, the Tin Pan Alley of Monk's youth. "Dinah" is a sweet 1925'er, rendered in fairly straight fashion. Monk's percussive emphasis gives his bass notes the oom-pah of a tuba as his right-hand dances gaily through the golden melody. "Ruby My Dear" is a lovely ballad, given an almost unsettling spaciousness here. The improvisation is relatively spare, with several rounds of the melody grounded in heavily-planted voicings and occasional lead-ins. "Monk's Point" has the simple insistency of many other Monk blues tunes, his left and right hands having a grand time tossing the spotlight back and forth in the solo. SKU: 1086172

Relish
Personnel: Joan Osborne (vocals, acoustic guitar, percussion); Rick DiFonzo (acoustic & electric guitars); William Wittman (electric guitar); Larry Campbell (fiddle); Wade Schuman (harmonica); Chris Palmaro (electric piano, Mellotron, organ); Andy Kravitz, Sammy Merendino (drums, percussion); Rick Chertoff (percussion); Leo Osborne, Catherine Russell (background vocals). Recorded at Big Blue, Katonah, New York and The Crawlspace, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. RELISH was nominated for the 1996 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year. The single "One Of Us" was nominated for 1996 Grammys for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. "St. Teresa" was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Joan Osborne was nominated for Best New Artist. "Spider Web" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Joan Osborne cut her teeth on the Greenwich Village club circuit, and with her major label debut, RELISH, she confidently shows off the fruits of paying her dues. Osborne's music starts with a raspy vocal style that is stock for the musical bouillabaisse that she cooks up. Osborne's roots lie in Kentucky and like Janis Joplin, another southern songbird, she has a voice that easily goes from a sexy growl to a sassy purr. Aided by Eric Bazilian and Rob Hyman of Hooters fame, Osborne mixes in distinctive covers (Bob Dylan, Sonny Boy Williamson) with her own offbeat originals. A snippet of an Alan Lomax field recording of Nell Hampton's "The Airplane Ride" prefaces the theological musings of "One Of Us," which wonders whether God may be an anonymous being shuffling along as one of the faceless masses. Omar Hakim's drumming paces "Spider Web," a song about a world where Ray Charles can see. Though Osborne loves to delve into religious mysticism, she isn't afraid to cut loose with frisky abandon. "Right Hand Man" isa randy romp with a love-starved Osborne looking for lust, while "Let's Just Get Naked" uses a plodding fuzz guitar as a backdrop to suggest a way to avoid ennui instead of filling a burning need. 20 Greatest Hits
Digitally remastered by Mark Chalecki (Capitol Mastering). Though Capitol Records let much of Merle Haggard's vintage '60s catalog remain unjustly out of print for too long, they began mending their ways in the 21st century with the reissue of those classic titles. Making even further amends is this almost-unassailable compilation, which nearly supplants the CAPITOL COLLECTOR'S SERIES album as THE single-disc Merle anthology to own. Merle's '60s run of hits represents one of the last timesin country music that aesthetic and commercial success were working partners. With Haggard's working-man narratives, Roy Nichols's terse guitar statements, and those inimitably catchy refrains, this stuff is the very definition of the Bakersfield sound that disciples like Dwight Yoakam would build a career imitating. For as many songs about "mama" as you'll hear out of Nashville, none are as honest or as poignant as "Mama Tried." As many drinking songs as you'll find in country music, few can match the quiet drama of "The Bottle Let Me Down." Sure, there are a few key songs missing, such as "Swinging Doors," but you can only fit so much from such a rich catalog onto one disc, and there's certainly no arguing with any of the inclusions. Eat A Peach [Remastered]
EAT A PEACH contains 2 LPs on 1 CD. Allman Brothers Band: Gregg Allman (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, electric piano, organ); Duane Allman (acoustic, electric & slide guitars); Dickey Betts (vocals, acoustic, electric & slide guitars); Berry Oakley (bass); Butch Trucks (vibes, drums, tympani, gong, tambourine, percussion); Jai Johanny Johanson (drums, congas). Engineers include: Aaron Baron, Larry Dahlstrom, Howie Albert. Recorded at Criteria Studios, Miami, Florida and Filmore East, New York, New York. All tracks have been digitally remastered. "Mountain Jam" can finally be listened to without interruption (the 33:40 song was spread onto 2 sides of the LP, here it runs straight through). Released shortly after the death of guitar legend Duane Allman, EAT A PEACH occupies an important transitional spot in the AllmanBrothers' discography. The leading three tracks, recorded after Duane's death, point the way toward the band's future. While still rooted in the group's blues-jam roots, these songs show the Allmans angling closer to the melodic country style that was guitarist Dicky Betts' forte. Betts acquits himself well on the opening "Ain't Wastin' Time No More," deftly handling a slide-guitar part that cannot help but evoke the group's departed member. "Melissa" plays squarely to Betts' strengths, while "Les Brers in A Minor" recalls the extended jams of the LIVE AT THE FILLMORE EAST album. The next three tracks on EAT A PEACH are taken from the Fillmore shows. Each selection represents the Duane-era Allmans at their best, especially the blistering "Trouble No More." The sound quality on these tracks, however, does not compare well to the analogous tracks on THE FILLMORE CONCERTS, an expanded reissue of the classic live album. The final three tracks, studio sessions featuring Duane, hint at what PEACH might have been had Duane lived. SKU: 1002415

Reality
Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, guitar, baritone saxophone, keyboards); Gail Ann Dorsey (vocals); Tony Visconti (guitar, keyboards, bass, background vocals); Mark Plati (guitar, bass); Earl Slick, Gerry Leonard (guitar); Mike Garson (piano); Sterling Campbell, Matt Chamberlain (drums); Catherine Russell (background vocals). Recorded at Looking Glass Studios, New York, New York. Based on the success David Bowie had by resurrecting his collaborative relationship with producer Tony Visconti on 2002's stellar HEATHEN, Bowie returned to the well with Visconti for its follow-up, REALITY. The result finds this New York City resident using his adopted hometown and cozy domestic life as impetus for another batch of fine millennial manna. Featuring the backing of talented musicians such as guitarist Earl Slick, pianist Mike Garson, and drummer Sterling Campbell, the sound that permeates these 11 songs ranges from the SCARY MONSTERS-era shuffle of "Never Get Old" to the stripped-down, late-night lounge aura of "Bring Me the Disco King," a song dappled byGarson's piano runs and dusted off by Bowie after laying around for a decade. Balancing the sorrow of the sparse "The Loneliest Guy" with a sunnier mood, Bowie tips his hat to Jonathan Richman and George Harrison by way of eclectic covers of, respectively, "Pablo Picasso" and "Try Some, Buy Some," a little-known Harrison composition originally cut as a Ronnie Spector single. Avoiding the nostalgia treadmill that's mired down many of his peers, Bowie has instead used REALITY as yet another stepping-stone to latter-day greatness. SKU: 1086931

Built To Last
Sick Of It All: Lou Koller (vocals); Pete Koller (guitar, background vocals); Craig Setari (bass, vocals); Armand Majidi (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: George Correia (percussion). Nearly a decade on, this New York quartet continues waving the hardcore punk flag. Built to last, indeed. Lou Koller's raspy shout is supported on these cheerleading punk choruses by Craig Setari's guttural barrages, and together they carry the still-flaming punk torch in songs like "Burn 'Em Down" and "Don't Follow," which urges, "Follow your viscera/Follow your soul/Don't let the powers have control." Although Sick Of It All is from New York, the music sometimes betrays West Coastpunk intentions. Guitarist Pete Koller, for example, might drop a quick surf-punk interlude into a between-verse breakdown. Setari's offbeat bass patterns bring to mind Fugazi, while drummer Armand Majidi mixes straightahead pounding with some expansive fills on songs such as "Closer" and "Nice." SKU: 1009537

Live
George Thorogood &The Destroyers: George Thorogood (vocals, guitar); Bill Blough (vocals, bass); Steve Chrismar (guitar); Hank Carter (saxophones, percussion); Jeff Simon (drums); H-Bomb Ferguson (maracas). Recorded at The Cincinnati Gardens, Cincinnati, Ohio on May 23, 1986. George Thorogood was always better as a live performer than as a studio act. This concert set, recorded in Cinncinatti in 1986, captures his newly expanded Destroyers, their sound beefed up with the addition of a second guitarist and (a la Bo Diddley) a maracas player. As usual, the band's great, ungodly racket owes as much to '60s garage rock and punk as it does to Muddy Waters. Thorogood, who sounds like he's having a great time, blowtorches his way through familiar songs by Elmore James, Chuck Berry, and the aforementioned Diddley. He also resurrects the Hollywood Argyles' early '60s novelty "Alley Oop" and turns in a hilariously melodramatic performance of his ode to alcoholic solipsism, "I Drink Alone." SKU: 1004117
