As the '70s drew to a close, Manilow found himself at something of an artistic crossroads. He hadn't yet come far enough from his soft-pop roots to pursue the jazzier and more technological extremes of his '80s efforts, but he was beginning to feel the constrictions of the form that brought him so much success for the last several years. ONE VOICE can be seen as a compromise, then, between the crowd-pleasing populism of the sunny Jule Styne-Frank Loesser classic "I Don't Want to Walk Without You" and the more contemporary, mature side represented by such sophisticated ballads as "Ships" and the title tune. In this sense, ONE VOICE represents the end of an era in Manilow's career.

COMPACT SNAP!, a collection of the Jam's singles, is an abridged version of the 2-LP set SNAP!, released on Polydor in 1983. The LPs included eight additional songs: "Away From The Numbers", "Billy Hunt", "English Rose", "Mr. Clean", "The Butterfly Collector", "Thick As Thieves", "Man In The Corner Shop" and "Tales From The Riverbank."

The Jam started out as a punk band and ended up as a soul band, one of the more eclectic and rewarding journeys found in the rock pantheon this side of The Clash. However, because certain elements remained constant--Paul Weller's stunning lyrics, the energetic rhythm section, the healthy, try-anything attitude--the quality never diminished, it only transformed. COMPACT SNAP! travels the distance from the desperate punk of "In The City" to the equally desperate soul of "Beat Surrender," touching on most of the great moments along the way.
The physical violence depicted in early songs like "Down In The Tube Station At Midnight" eventually gave way to an emotional violence in late-period songs like "The Bitterest Pill (I Ever Had To Swallow)." Weller described the youth of his day almost as skillfully as his hero Pete Townshend had done for the mod generation ten years earlier.
The Jam never caught on in America, forcing Weller to break up the band and form The Style Council, his straight R&B project. It is a shame this strong unit was lost, especially considering that by the time they broke up, the three members had barely hit their mid-twenties and had so much left to say. But as with groups like The Police and The Pixies, perhaps it was for the best. This way, the music is trapped intime, a chunk of great tunes representing the greatest Motown band punk ever witnessed.

By the time Brian Eno left Roxy Music and came to record this masterpiece of a debut in 1973, he already held in his grasp the raw tools to revolutionize popular music. HERE COME THE WARM JETS is bathed in his singular pop-with-a-wink aesthetic and free-associative imagination. Whether on the four-on-the-floor pre-punk stomp of "Needles In The Camel's Eye" or the Spector/VU trad-rock-ism of "Cindy Tells Me," the album displays an unabashed love of quirky, catchy pop. Macabre lyrics often subvert the melodies, a feature fully expressed on "Baby's On Fire," where the singer's cheeky vocals exaggerate the theme's comic ambiguity.
On two quite different pieces--the closing title-track and "On Some Faraway Beach"--a different side of Eno was laid bare. These mid-tempo, mostly wordless sound-paintings construct melancholyscenes out of grandiose, manipulated sounds, and gesture toward Eno's role as the father of ambient music. Savage guitar lines, erratic synthesizer, and pounding drums (Robert Fripp, Paul Thompson, and Phil Manzanera are among the excellent personnel) provide exciting textures on a collection as beguiling as it is invigorating. With WARM JETS Eno proved he was ready to jump off the edge of the pop universe, and to drag everyone else with him.

Madonna and Michael Jackson aside, this is supreme pop music and as good as the genre can ever get. Everybody loved Blondie; fans, children, critics, other musicians and senior citizens - and not just because Debbie Harry was its frontperson. This is an unintentional greatest hits record that doesn't lets up until the last note of 'Just Go Away' has died. If one wanted to carp, you could have asked for 'Denis' and 'Call Me' to have been included, but that would be just plain greedy. One of the greatest 'up' recordsof all time.

The Scorpions and the Berlin Philharmonic team up for a record that, amazingly, is a credit to both the classical and rock communities. "Hurricane 2000"begins with a symphonic piece that hints at the familiar riff that dominated rock radio in the '80s. "Moment Of Glory" is a beautiful new ballad written featuring a choir. "Send Me An Angel," equally as sweeping, is given a new life in this classical version by the vocal talents of Zucchero. "Crossfire" is a combination of violins and the superb lead guitar work of Matthias Jabs; it builds to a bombastic crescendo. LED ZEPPELIN IV is the definitive LedZeppelin recording. It was on LED ZEPPELIN IV that the band's sound and concept, Plant's vocals, and Page's arranging skills finally crystallized into something completely distinct and original. The earthy hedonism of their earlier work was deepened and extended on rockers like "Black Dog," "Rock And Roll" and "Misty Mountain Hop." The "it" boy of early-'00s roots-rock, former Whiskeytown leader Ryan Adams has responded to the mountain of hype surrounding him with an arrogance worthy of his idol, mid-'60s Bob Dylan. Accordingly he follows his stripped-down solo debut with a two-disc, fully produced set that finds him grasping for the mantle of alt-country messiah. GOLD picks up where Whiskeytown's swan song FAITHLESS STREET left off; a step removed from the country-rock hard line but still full of rootsy, organic, Band-like warmth.
The up-tempo opening tune "New York, New York" recalls vintage Steve Forbert, while "Answering Bell" sounds like David Gray fronting the aforementioned Band on a rewritten "The Weight." The epic, acoustic guitar-based ballad "Nobody's Girl" is one of the more overtly Dylanesque pieces here, and while trying to overshadow Zimmy is a fool's errand no matter how big your britches, one has to admire Adams for the considerable chutzpah necessary to even take up the task. Whether you believe he's the Gram Parsons of the 21st century or not, its that undeniable spirit and ambition that lay at the heart of GOLD's appeal.

The last of ELO's classic trio of late-'70s releases, after 1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD and 1977's OUT OF THE BLUE, 1979's DISCOVERY was also the group's last significant commercial success. A bit more self-consciously experimental than the previous pair of ELO albums--"The Diary ofHorace Wimp" could have come from the pen of Jeff Lynne's more musically adventurous former musical partner Roy Wood--the album also finds Lynne finally taking notice of the musical trends of the day. The hyper-prominent snare pulse, keening violins, and scratchy guitar of the opening "Shine a Little Love" marks this as ELO's disco song, though the Beatlesque harmonies of the bridge are unmistakably Lynne's. The album's big hit, "Don't Bring Me Down," couldn't be called punk, or even new wave, but the in-your-face arrangement and snarling vocals do at least betray some hint of the more aggressive new music.

The Beatles' impact on popular music is inestimable. They changed the face of rock & roll, introducing new concepts and techniques again and again throughout their career, influencing both their contemporaries and the next several generations of rock & roll. In the early '60s, when the golden age of Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis had given way to prefabricated teen idols and bland, diluted versions of real rock & roll and R&B, the Beatles' brash, effervescent blend of '50s vintage sounds and bold, electric pop saved the world.
Not content with reviving rock & roll almost single-handedly, the Beatles continued to innovate. Borrowing a bit from John Lennon's hero Bob Dylan, they pioneered the progression from generic love songs to more personalized, introspective subject matter. When Chris Columbus was tapped to direct the eagerly awaited film adaptation of J.K. Rowling's best-selling multi-generational children's book, he made it clear that the legendary John Williams was the only choice to compose music for this magical yarn. Having conjured up mystical moods for timeless tales ranging from Star Wars to Superman, it's no wonder Columbus was eager to hand this challenging assignment off to the master.
With the world of HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE revolving around a boarding school for warlocks-in-training, the Long Island native uses a full range of symphonic splendor to make this one of his most memorable scores. The use of the delicate music box-like sounds of a celeste in the sweeping intro "Prologue" takes on a different meaning when this fairy-like sound is used with a darker edgeon the closing "Hedwig's Theme." Key scenes get infused with Williams' crisp arrangements. "The Quidditch Match" benefits from a bellowing fanfare, abbreviated militaristic cadence and frantic strings, while the sinister aura cloaking "The Face of Voldemort" is defined by a perfect marriage of lower-end orchestration and forceful brass passages. John Williams pulls yet another compositional masterpiece out of his hat.

Along with jazz-folk diva Cassandra Wilson and mother-of-them-all Abbey Lincoln, the eclectic singer Dianne Reeves is a strong believer in mixing up genres on her albums. It's perhaps the only way to be a "jazz" singer now. Leave the standards-only sets to marginal cabaret belters. Still, a singer with Reeves' formidable chops is sometimes tempted to overdo it, an occupational hazard in current jazz practice. Happily, this intelligent vocalist has the taste and a light enough touch to bring her highly varied programs off with aplomb.
Tunes like Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" and JoniMitchell's "River" are jazzed up just enough to suit her sinewy sensibility but still retain their outline and essential meaning. Reeves is ably assisted in this task by a crack team of accompanists, including pianists George Duke and Billy Childs, soprano saxophonist Kenny Garrett, and bassist Stanley Clarke, who produces some beautifully articulated lines on "Testify."

Combining rock and intricate, experimental jazz with biting social commentary and a healthy dose of juvenile humor, Zappa's music was never less than provocative and often quite challenging. He manages to be musically ambitious, ironic, scatological and just plain weird, often within the same song. If you're looking to dive into his voluminous oeuvre, 1973'S OVER-NITE SENSATION is a good place to start. Following a string of experimental, nearly instrumental releases, the record is about as accessible as Zappa gets, and features some of his catchiest, wittiest songs.
Even with musicians such as George Duke and Jean-Luc Ponty and several horn players, the album is more rock than jazz. Awash with references to tweezers, dental floss, dandruff, ponchos, poodles and dwarves, OVER-NITE SENSATION is laugh-out-loud funny. The opener, "Camarillo Brillo," which recounts a nutty sexual encounter, is full of intricate wordplay, and the more explicit "Dinah Moe Hum" surely delighted legions of brainy high school boys when it was released. Thewonderfully demented "Dirty Love" belongs in the pantheon of great Zappa songs, as does "I Am the Slime," a hilariously astute, prescient take on couch-potato culture, decades before the term was coined.
