Homage To Mahatma Ghandi
Personnel: Ravi Shankar (sitar); Mrs. Jaban, Mrs. Widya, Prodyot Sen, Sunil Kumar (tanpura); Alla Rakha (tabla). Liner Note Author: Reginald Massey. Recording information: Akademie der Wissenschaft, Munich, Germany (10/1980); Studio des Dames, Paris, France (10/1978). After the death of Mahatma Gandhi, Ravi Shankar was asked if he would perform in honor of the assassinated Indian leader. Shankar fulfilled the request by writing "Mohan Kauns." A four-part homage, "Mohan Kauns" begins with a drumless section--plaintive and sorrowful--before moving to sections that feature tabla (hand drums) and two tanpura (a long-necked, fretless, stringed instrument). Shankar's sitar work soars over, in, and around these accompanists to majestic, stirring effect. The composition is a raga, an Indian form that features a melodic line on which the musicians improvise at length. For the disc's other two compositions, a raga entitled "Gara" and a tala (a repeating rhythmic cycle) called "Farodast," Shankar is also joined by tabla and tanpura players. In the manner of most ragas, "Gara" builds slowly from Shankar's haunting melodies at the opening to an increasingly rhythmic--even frantic--instrumental dialogueat the song's climax. "Farodast" is a showcase for the tabla player, with particular focus on his complicated improvisations. Even those unfamiliar with classical Indian music, or the spiritual tradition to which it is tied, will find HOMAGE TO MAHATMA GANDHI quite evocative and beautiful. SKU: 6563862

IV
Cypress Hill: B. Real, Sen-Dog, DJ Muggs. Additional personnel includes: Barron Ricks, MC Eiht, Chace Infinite (rap vocals); Mike "Fingers" Sims (guitar, bass); Bobo (bass, percussion, background vocals); Reggie Stewart (bass). Recorded at Ameraycan Studios, North Hollywood, California. Back with a renewed energy and purpose, Latino-flavored rappers Cypress Hill climb back into the ring for another round in the fight for Hip-Hop supremacy on IV, an album which is as much at home with ghetto street-kids as it is with California surfers. Right hand man Sen Dog is back in the fold, completing the circle that B-Real and DJ Muggs drew as one of the most influential groups in Rap. B-Real's vocalstylings sound as crisp as the day we first heard "How Could I Just Kill a Man." "Tequlia Sunrise" is a mid-tempo head- nodder where Sen Dog opens the track with his trademark Spanglish. B-Real pops into the chorus and then rips the next verse wide open. DJ Muggs tracks run deep as he retools the Cypress sound to include samples as well as vintage sounding instruments, like the serenading guitar of "Tequila Sunrise." Other tracks to check are "Checkmate", which has an early 90's uptempo, energetic classic Hill sound and "Prelude To U Come Up", which features an appearance from MC Eight. SKU: 1015304

Nick Of Time
Personnel: Bonnie Raitt (vocal, slide guitar, piano); Johnny Lee Schell (acoustic guitar), Michael Landau, Arthur Adams (guitar); J.D. Maness (epdal steel guitar); Marty Grebb (tenor saxophone); Kim Wilson (harmonica); Scott Thurston, Jerry Williams, Herbie Hancock (piano); Michael Ruff, Don Was (keyboards); Chuck Domanico (acoustic bass); Hutch Hutchinson (bass); Ricky Fataar (drums, percussion); Tony Braunagel (drums, percussion, timbales); Fran Christina (drums); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion, congas); Arnold McCuller, Sir Harry Bowens, Sweet Pea Atkinson, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Larry John McNally, David Lasley (background vocals). The Heart Attack Horns: Bill Bergman, Dennis Farias, Greg Smith, John Berry, Jr. NICK OF TIME was the 1989 Grammy winner for Album Of The Year. Although famed primarily for her interpretation of compositions by the likes of Joni Mitchell, John Hiatt, James Taylor and Paul Brady, NICK OF TIME includes two fine Raitt-penned songs. "The Road's My Middle Name" is an up-tempo blues number, harking back to her early career performing alongside Son House and Mississippi Fred McDowell. The title track is one of her best, a sensitive examination of the traumas of ageing. Throughout the album her voice is haunting and controlled, bringing new meaning and depth to a varied range of material.Bonnie turned 40 gracefully with this album and it gave her unexpected massive success just in the nick of time. Hot Wires
Personnel: Roy Buchanan (vocals, guitar); Johnny Sayles, Kanika Kress (vocals); Donald Kinsey (guitar); Stan Szelest (keyboards); Larry Exum (bass); Morris Jennings (drums). Producers: Roy Buchanan, Bruce Iglauer, Dick Shurman, Justin Niebank. Recorded at Streeterville Studios, Chicago, Illinois. Digitally remastered by Jay O'Rourke & Bruce Iglauer (Monster Disc, Chicago, Illinois). Master guitarist Roy Buchanan elevates his already astronomical musical standard on his third Alligator release, HOT WIRES. With his searing tone, fluid runs, screeching harmonics, dynamics experiments, and grab bag of scratches, wails, and noodles, Buchanan's Fender often sounds less like a guitar than a channel for highly articulatealien intelligence. As usual, Roy has backed himself with some of the finest blues and rock studio musicians--including guitarist Donald Kinsey (of the Kinsey Report) and vocalists Johnny Sayles ("That Did It") and Kanika Kress (on Otis Redding's "These Arms of Mine"). Though the band provides thunderous, spot-on backing on conventional blues workouts ("Ain't No Business") and rave-up instrumentals ("Country Boogie") alike, the spotlight is on Buch throughout, particularly on his own compositions, the acid surf "High Wire" and the pummeling "Flash Chordin'." HOT WIRES is yet another testament to the skills of this dazzling, unfairly under-recognized musician. SKU: 1019104

Recorded at Real World Studios, England, Kingway Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana & Studio 2000, Dakar, Senegal. All tracks have been digitally remastered. "Steam" was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Best Rock Vocal Performance, Solo." "Steam" won the 1994 Grammy Award for "Music Video, Short Form." After the worldwide success of 1986's SO, Peter Gabriel produced collections of movie soundtrack music, busied himself with the Amnesty International tour and started his own label. Released in 1992, US was long-awaited to say the least. It was not the commercial smash that SO was; instead it was Gabriel's most personal and introspective work. In the years after SO, Gabriel's marriage broke up and he went into analysis, which he addresses on "Digging in the Dirt." In the past, Gabriel wrote songs in the guise of various characters and invoked epic themes, but here even with exotic rhythms and eclectic influences, Gabriel wasgrounded in the real world. While lyrically and thematically distinct from SO, parts of US recall its predecessor. "Steam" is strongly reminiscent of "Sledgehammer," while "Love to Be Loved" has a hypnotic pulse reminiscent of SO's seductive beds of rhythm. "Kiss That Frog," with its hip-wiggling beat, is the record's lightest moment. Elsewhere, Gabriel combines gorgeous melodies, poignant vocals and the lush, atmospheric production of Daniel Lanois, especially on the soaring "Come Talk to Me" (sung with Sinead O'Connor), "Blood of Eden" and "Secret World." Pilgrim
Personnel: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Ruth Kelly-Clapton (spoken vocals); Andy Fairweather-Low (guitar); London Session Orchestra (strings); Paul Brady (tin whistle, background vocals); Joe Sample (piano); Paul Carrack (Wurlitzer piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Chris Stainton (Hammond B-3 organ); Simon Climie (keyboards, synthesizer, programming, background vocals); Greg Phillinganes (keyboards); Louis Jardim (bass, percussion); Nathan East, Pino Palladino, Dave Bronze (bass); Steve Gadd (drums); Paul Waller (programming); Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, Tony Rich, Chyna (background vocals). Recorded at Olympic Studio, London, England, Ocean's Way Studio, Los Angeles, California. PILGRIM was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album. "My Father's Eyes" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Since donning an Armani suit back in the decadent '80s, Eric Clapton's music has become more polished as he's gotten older. Despite recording the all-blues FROM THE CRADLE collection in 1994, E.C. has either gone unplugged, collaborated with silky-smooth soulsters such as Babyface, or dabbled with current electronic trends. PILGRIM finds Slowhand doing all of the above on his first album of original material in nearly a decade. Unlike many older artists dipping their toes into the electronic pool, Clapton and co-producer Simon Climie's restrained use of programming gilds rather than overwhelms these original numbers. In a welcome turn, Clapton wrote or co-wrote every song with the exception of Bob Dylan's "Born In Time" and "Going Down Slow,"a St. Louis Jimmy blues nugget. Joined by Babyface on the former, Clapton gives both songs a lite-jazz treatment that meshes well with a burnished vocal style that sounds as if he's been listening to Curtis Mayfield recently. Complementing Clapton's emotive vocalizing is his always formidable guitar playing. Whether he politely funks it up on "She's Gone" or indulges his blues jones on the slow shuffle of "Sick And Tired," Eric Clapton's musical development continues to be a steady pilgrimage into the new millenium. Fantasma
Cornelius; Hilarie Sidney (vocals, drums); Sean O'Hagan (banjo, samples, background vocals); Kinbara (strings); Robert Schneider (bass); Yoshie Hiragakura (drums); Mooog Yamamoto (turntables); Yuki Yano (Theremin); Kazumichi Fujiwara. Like many of his counterparts in the 90's wave of Japanese rockers, Keigo Oyamada (a.k.a. Cornelius) is well-versed in the history of pop as it leads up to the here and now. And for the most part, the likable genre-jumping antics of FANTASMA, his third full-length that works as a US debut, pigeonhole him as a somewhat more schizophrenic Beck. He gets crazy with not just the cheeze wiz, but 3D microphones, Meredith Monk-like vocal overlays, drum'n'bass beats, kitschy keyboards, and a mound of samples, ingredients for a pop-cult salad nonpareil. Where Cornelius dazzles though, is in his musical default function, which is wisely set on psychedelic indie-pop. The droney, driving "New Music Machine," forinstance, cobbles together a bleeding lo-fi aesthetic out of 48 tracks worth of background vocals, analog synths and, above all else, drums 'n' guitars. And "Seashore and Horizon" shuttles between such a seamless Pet Sounds vibe of acoustic guitars and choral arrangements and kooky magical mystery pop burn-out, that you can almost smell the members of the Elephant 6 collective molding with envy. Live At Tramps NYC 1996 [PA]
DeLa Soul: Maseo, Posdnous, Trugoy. Additional personnel: Common, Jungle Brothers, Mos Def. Recording information: Tramps, New York, New York (05/16/1996). While De La Soul's groundbreaking 1989 debut, 3 FEET HIGH AND RISING, met with practically universal acclaim, the ensemble's early live shows were known to be erratic. However, by 1996, the New York trio of Posdnuos, Trugoy and DJ Maseo had honed its stage act into one of the finest in the rap game--a unique, impassioned party where talented lyricists from the Native Tongues collective and beyond could show up on any night. LIVE AT TRAMPS captures a boisterous De La Soul performance around the time that the group was putting the finishing touches on its underrated fourth (and fiercest) record STAKES IS HIGH. Pos, Trugoy, and Mase have always been archivists of hip-hop, understanding the roots and history of the music, and consistently unearthing pitch-perfect samples from pop, jazz, and old-school rap. This particular show is, in part, a celebration of rap's past, as Mase cuts in tributes to EPMD, Boogie Down Productions, Digable Planets, and many others throughout the concert. The set also reveals that De La Soul could accurately predict the future of hip-hop, as the trio calls the then-unknown Mos Def up on stage for a few tracks. Energy is the engine of live rap, and this concert at TRAMPS reveals De La Soul at its most vital. SKU: 6558279

Yes: Jon Anderson (vocals); Steve Howe (guitar, vocals); RickWakeman (keyboards); Chris Squire (bass, vocals); Alan White (drums). Recorded at Advision Studios, London, England. All tracks have been digitally remastered. There's no ignoring the fact that TORMATO was Yes' most roundly (and unjustly) ignored recording. For reasons unknown, the album languished in bargain bins for years, despite being substantially less pretentious than some earlier work and much more "progressive" than Yes' later pop crossovers. On many tracks, there seems to be a concerted effort to cut back on the bombast. "Onward" is a simple, piano-based ballad, effectively rendered. "Future Times," "Don't Kill the Whale" and others find Steve Howe delivering some of his most visceral, biting guitar work, interacting nicely with Chris Squire's upper register bass lines. There's lots of carnival-like keyboard work and fanciful imagery (see the striking, harpsichord-driven "Madrigal" and the poignant "Circus of Heaven"), but hell, this is a Yes album. And it all works. SKU: 1001243

American Pie II
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Continuing down the same alt-pop path as its predecessor, AMERICAN PIE 2 packs its grooves with a mix of established names and promising newcomers. Blink 182 return with a punky flip-off to romance ("Every Time I Look For You") and are joined by Green Day's equally scathing nugget ("Scumbag"), Fenix Tx's lusty ode to an '80s teen-flick icon ("Phoebe Cates") and a poignant look at youth's life choices by 3 Doors Down ("Be Like That"). Other major names making the scene are Uncle Kracker (the chugging jam "[I'm Gonna] Split This Room In Half"'), a nasally Knack-flavored anthem by American Hi-Fi ("Vertigo") and a fuzz-guitar driven nugget by Alien Ant Farm ("Good [For A Woman]"). Thankfully, the newer acts also maintain this flow of catchy tunes and fun vibes. Texas warbler Angela Ammons contributes the airy "Always Getting Over You," Left Front Tire pump up the volume with the mosh-worthy "Bring You Down," Flying Blindtake a surf-y turn with "Smokescreen" and chanteuse Lucia lays down some sultry grooves with the hypnotic "I Will." In the end, the platter of musical pastries that makes up AMERICAN PIE 2 will leave you with a satisfying taste of the sugary cake that is contemporary pop. SKU: 7914097

Blue Valentine
Personnel: Tom Waits (vocals, guitar, piano); Roland Bautista, Ray Crawford, "Shine" Robinson (guitar); FrankVicari, Herbert Hardesty (tenor saxophone); Da Wille Gonga, Harold Battiste (piano); Charles Kynard (organ); Byron Miller, Jim Hughart, Scott Edwards (bass); Rick Lawson, Chip White, Earl Palmer (drums); Bobbye Hall (congas). Recorded in Hollywood, California in July & August 1978. After pefecting his seedy beatnik image on albums like SMALL CHANGE and NIGHTHAWKS AT THE DINER, Waits refined and expanded on it until the 1983 breakthrought of SWORDFISHTROMBONES. BLUE VALENTINE is full of low-rent nightlife imagery and arrangements that leave Waits' jazz leanings behind in favor of a more direct, blues-oriented approach. Lyrically, he's at his most straightforward and narrative, with tunes like "$29.00" and "Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis" reading like dimestore detective novels. In a customary nod to tradition, he delivers a marvelously stentorian version of Bernstein's "Somewhere." Things close in a low-key fashion with the spare,heart-rending title song, a ballad of shattered love. SKU: 1005119

Chelsea
Although never a first- or even second-string punk band, London's Chelsea lasted through a variety of lineups over a number of years, with growling vocalist Gene October the only constant. 1979's CHELSEA is their first and possibly their best album. Here Chelsea favor a slower, more metal-influenced sound than many of their hyper punk contemporaries, with riff-rockers like "I'm on Fire" and "Fools and Soldiers" sounding more like Mott The Hoople or Slade than the Clash. Guitarist Tony James, later co-leader of the controversial Sigue Sigue Sputnik, plays in a slashing, riff-oriented style that shows Chelsea's stomping hard rock roots, while the cover of Jimmy Cliff's "Many Rivers to Cross" shows a wider range of influences. This reissue includes four demos of early Chelseasingles, including an excellent version of the anthemic "Urban Kids." SKU: 6396170

With Strings (The Master Takes)
Personnel includes: Charlie Parker (alto saxophone), Flip Phillips (tenor saxophone), Al Porcino (trumpet), Joseph Singer (French horn), Mitch Miller (oboe), John LaPorta (clarinet), Zelly Smirnoff (violin), Isadore Zir (viola), Maurice Brown (cello), Verley Mills (harp), Al Haig, Lou Stein, Tony Aless, Bernie Leighton (piano), Art Ryerson (guitar), Ray Brown, Tommy Potter, Bob Haggart, Curly Russell (bass), Buddy Rich, Roy Haynes, Don Lamond, Shelly Manne (drums), Diego Iborra (percussion). Compilation producer: Michael Lang. Recorded in New York between December 1947 and 1952. Includes liner notes by Joe Goldberg and Norman Granz. This is an expanded version of the early-'50s album that broadened Charlie Parker's audience by focusing on the beautiful lyricism of his playing. These recordings feature Parker's alto saxophone over a gorgeous bed of strings, but perhaps an even more significant departure is the fact that he simplified his phrasing. His wondrously uncurling ribbons of notes are supplanted by the confident ease with which he embraces each of these melodies, dancing through and around them and never losing their essential character. On an album of back-to-back standouts, "April in Paris" is a towering beauty. Comprised primarily of what were--or have since become--standards, this is as fine a place as any to see exactly why Parker is perhaps the preeminent improviser in the history ofjazz. SKU: 1002379

Tical 2000: Judgement Day
Personnel includes: Streetlife, Redman, Mobb Deep, Chris Rock, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, Cappadonna, Ed Lover, Raekwon, Masta Killa, Killa Sin, Inspectah Deck, D'Angelo, Star, Polite. Producers include: RZA, Erick Sermon, Havoc, Daz, Mathematics. Engineers include: Nolan "Dr. NO" Moffitte, Patrick Viala, Tommy Uzzo. Returning with his sophomore solo album JUDGEMENT DAY, Johnny Blaze once again brings the pain, on a smashing collection of nineteen tracks. With the energy of a whirlwind and the fierceness of a hurricane, Method Man rips through tracks produced by Havoc ("Play IV Keeps"), True Master ("Grid Iron Rap"), Erick Sermon ("Step By Step") and of course, The RZA ("Perfect World"). The initial single and title track, "Judgement Day", is an all-out,up tempo track that just makes you move. Appearances from Cappadonna ("Sweet Love"), Redman ("Big Dogs") and Streetlife ("Suspect Chin Music") make for interesting play off of Meth's dynamic delivery. Some of the other highlights on this varied, hard-hitting release are "Torture", "Cradle Rock" and a serious posse cut "Spazzola", which features Streetlife, Raekwon, Masta Killa, Killer Sin and Inspectah Deck. Permanent Waves
Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, synthesizers, bass); Alex Lifeson (guitar); Neil Peart (drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: Hugh Syme (piano). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Falling somewhere in between heavy metal and AOR, Rush were one of the success stories of the period from 1976 to 1986--all the more surprising because few Canadians manage to break out from the land of the maple leaf in this area of music. Much of their following idolized Alex Lifeson, who was a guitar hero with the technical ability of a Page or a Beck. Occasionally Neil Peart's lyricsleave a little to be desired: "the shifting shafts of shining, weave the fabric of their dreams . . ." Jon Anderson from Yes was afflicted with the same condition of pretentiolyricitus. That aside, the music is faultless. SKU: 1003855

Some Rainy Morning
Robert Cray Band: Robert Cray (vocals, guitar); Jim Pugh (piano, organ); Karl Sevareid (bass); Kevin Hayes (drums). Recorded at Studio D, Sausalito, California. SOME RAINY MORNING was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. SOME RAINY MORNING is a typically expert set of modern blues and soul from a peerless master. Robert Cray's band certainly has the whole Booker T. & the M.G.'s thing down, too. "Moan," the self-descriptive opener, occasions some of Cray's most stinging Otis Rush-derived guitar lines. "Enough for Me" alternates between vaguely Latin syncopation in the verses and straightshuffle in the solo sections. "Little Boy Blue" is decorated with shimmering soul guitar filigree and could pass easily for a lost Otis Redding song, and "Jealous Love" has an early '60s Chicago R&B feel a la Jerry Butler.
