Combining as it does the emotional gravity of two cultures--the deep song of flamenco music and the rich lament of the blues--SKETCHES OF SPAIN is a musical hybrid of enormous power and beauty. Gil Evans' immense canvas of orchestral colors inspires some of Davis' most deeply felt solo flights. He paints vast vistas of velvety, shimmering night sounds, and through it all runs the mountainous backbone of Spain's native rhythms and chants.
The centerpiece of SKETCHES OF SPAIN is the Evans/Davis treatment of the second movement of Rodrigo's "Concierto De Aranjuez." Evans' charts engage Davis in a shifting, insistent dialogue, italicizing the trumpeter's subtle variations and timbral ecstasies with magnificent orchestral flourishes. The surreal patina of three flutes and harp, high muted trumpets and woodwinds, and subterranean trombones, French horns and tuba that define one of the main variations on the theme, is a majestic foil for Davis' expressive tones.
Gil Evans liked to say that after Louis Armstrong, no one had affected the sound of the trumpet like Miles Davis. Miles fashioned a vibrato-less, introspective brass cry, made all the more lovely by his lush use of the middle and lower registers. Davis' manipulation of pitch on "Saeta" and "Solea" is so idiomatic, so vocalized, so full of revel and lament, it pierces your heart with heroic resignation and longing. SKETCHES OF SPAIN stands alone as one of the pillars of modern music.

Between 1953 and 1958, the Drifters were among the biggest acts in R&B. The group's members, however, were an unruly bunch, prone to offending club owners and disc jockeys. The group's manager (owner of the band's name) finally fired the entire group in a desperate act that should have spelled the end of the Drifters. In fact, it turned out to be the beginning of a spectacular run of hits.
Rather than write off his losses, manager George Treadwell found a new group to be the Drifters, this one led by the legendary Ben E. King. The rest, as they say, is history. Over the next seven years, the Drifters hit over and over again with such classics as"There Goes My Baby," "Dance with Me," "This Magic Moment," "Up on the Roof," and "Under the Boardwalk." The group even survived the departure of King, replacing him with two equally gifted frontmen, Rudy Lewis and Johnny Moore. Fans of R&B history will no doubt find the two-disc ALL TIME GREATEST HITS an indispensable addition to their collection. Another two-disc set, LET THE BOOGIE-WOOGIE ROLL, covers the group's early years.

This late '40s Blue Note date groups jazz legend Sidney Bechet with cornetist Wild Bill Davison and pianist Art Hodes and injects a fresh dose of vitality into Bechet's hard-driving style of New Orleans jazz. Backed by a strong rhythm section, the three musicians swap leads on classics like "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," "Basin Street Blues," and "When the Saints Go Marching In." Such traditional songs as "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho" (note the swinging, hand-clap intro) are given such energized readings asto make them immune to criticisms of shallow revivalism.
Davison's ragged tone and strong improvisatory skills are impressive throughout, but Bechet, who only plays soprano sax on this session, is clearly the leader here, blazing ahead of the ensemble at times with his relentless attack, heavy, dramatic vibrato, and clear tone. RUNNIN' WILD is a vital, pulse-quickening collection (just check out the title track) that might surprise those who consider classic jazz "quaint."

On Chimaira's second full-length album, THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF REASON, the Midwestern nu-metal outfit charges out of the gate with an electrifying mix of brutally direct Sabbath-esque guitars, the scariest death metal howls this side of Morbid Angel, and double-kick-drum patterns so fast and clean they make Slipknot's drummer sound like the guy who played on "Louie Louie." Unlike many of itssimilarly hard-edged contemporaries, Chimaira features the added novelty of a full-time member who is credited with "lead electronics." Cynics might suggest that pop-country star Martina McBride's greatest assets are here pearly whites and piercing blue eyes. High points in this smoothly produced debut solo effort from the rapper formerly known as Fresh Prince include his occasional moments of tenderness, especially "Just the Two of Us," on which Smith addresses his young son against a sample of Bill Withers's song of the same name: "From the first time the doctor placed you in my arms/I knew I'd meet death 'fore I let you meet harm." Smith reveals another hint of vulnerability on "Forever," when he describes his girlfriend: "She...makes me feel that forever is a possibility."

While sporting a more synthesized sound than his early efforts, Dennis Brown's VICTORY IS MINE still manages to show the singer at his best. Brown also contributes an outstanding cover of "Sea of Love." This 1991 outing is a worthwhile disc with a number of powerful tunes.

On PAID THA COST, Snoop Dogg delivers plenty of the kind of visceral, sensuous, West Coast G-Funk that we've come to love him for. The most blatant example is "Stoplight," which samples and nods to P-Funk's ubiquitous "Flashlight," butsomehow ends up sounding more like vintage Rick James gone hip-hop. Though his vintage beats and loopy sense of humor complement that sound perfectly, he doesn't leave things at that. The honey-sweet vocals of LaToiya Williams lend a melodic, slow-jam R&B flavor to the mellow "I Believe in You." A love song from Snoop? Believe it. "Ballin'" features the old-school vocal-harmony soul that's always been close to Snoop's heart, courtesy of the Dramatics. "From tha Chuuuch to Da Palace" ups the humor ante by including a lascivious adaptation of "Buffalo Gals." What's curious is that the already laid-back Snoop often seems to retreat from the spotlight on this album, letting the production and special touches occupy the forefront. Perhaps it's just that he's already proven himself so thoroughly that he's ready to go where no rapper has gone before--egolessness.

Composition and improvisation merge in a special way in the duets of Chick Corea and Gary Burton. There's a bridge between classical music and jazz which is crossed with vitality by these two master musicians. There's a small segment of the music-buying populace that was lying in wait for years for this one. The Blasters spent the first half of the 1980s purveying some of the finest roots-rock ever heard, so thoroughly assimilating their blues, rockabilly, country, and R&B influences that their own recordings could have been lost '50s classics. Led by the tireless bar room wail of singer Phil Alvin and the everyman narratives and pealing guitar of younger brother Dave, the band released four albums (the first for a tiny CA indie) and an EP before falling victim to the twin rock-band pitfalls of fraternal discord and poor sales.
None of the band's original albums ever made it to CD before this all-inclusive collection of the band's Slash/Warners releases. A wealth of bonus tracks from the tradition-conscious THE BLASTERS and NON-FICTION, the more produced THE HARD LINE and the recklessly rocking live OVER THERE sweeten the pot for longtime fans. Those who've never experienced the Blasters magic before will be taken by both their way with a cover (they not only make Little Willie John's "I'm Shakin'" their own, they commandeer the thing) and their gift for creating working-class novellas that run on Chuck Berry-inspired guitars and Gene Taylor's roadhouse piano style. Stray Cats be damned, these guys were the true inheritors of the American music mantle.

On its first two albums, pioneering electronic Krautrock group Tangerine Dream made clear its intention to use SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS-era Pink Floyd as a jumping-off point for the band's cosmic explorations. While T. Dream was never anyone's idea of a rock band, the first two albums do feature electric guitar and drums used prominently in a way that at least tips its hat to the rock aesthetic. On ZEIT, the group moves definitively away from rock trappings into purely atmospheric, improvised electronics, creating soundscapes alternately ambient and avant-garde.
A key factor in this process was the solidification of the personnel. Synthesist Peter Baumann completed the trio lineup that would remain intact for the next five years and create the bulk of what's regarded as the group's classic work. For most of ZEIT, conventional melody and harmony are abandoned completely in favor of pure electronic textures. Things build slowly as waves of analog synth and heavily processed guitar ebb and flow in these largely rhythmless arrangements. Occasional melodic colors do appear in the form of a cello quartet, andthe subtly elegant majesty of the group's constantly mutating sonic paintings makes ZEIT sound like the soundtrack to an odd-but-memorable dream.

The John Lennon legacy was furthered and deepened by the film IMAGINE, a documentary that captured post-Beatles Lennon in moments both public and candid, at various points in his development as a solo artist. There are fascinating clips of him at work in the studio, scenes in which he acts upon his political beliefs with bed-ins and the like, and frank interviews. The inevitable soundtrack to the film is more than just a cash-in designed to appeal to rabid Beatles collectors who pay a king's ransom for Ringo's fingernail clippings, though. The album collects some of the finest musical moments from the film and turns them into an illuminating, intimate look at Lennon in his prime.
