My Brother The Cow (Remastered And Expanded)
Mudhoney: Mark Arm (vocals, electric guitar); Steve Turner (electric guitar); Matt Lukin (electric bass); Dan Peters (drums, marimba). Additional personnel: Jon Wahl (harmonica); Renestair E.J. (tenor saxophone). Recorded at The Ranch, Seattle, Washington in October 1994. There is an unlisted bonus track on MY BROTHER THE COW that consists of the entire album played backwards. By 1995, the grunge uproar of the early-'90s had begun to die down, due to the vices of several key players, the suicide of Kurt Cobain, and the public's craving for something new. Mudhoney was one of the last bands standing, releasing their fourth full-length album, MY BROTHER THE COW. Ignoring then-current rock music flavors of the month such as rap metal, pop punk, etc., Mudhoney continue to bash out their brand of raucous, distortion-drenched, three-chord garage rock. The band pulls no punches on the track "Into Yer Shtik" (reportedly a dig at Courtney Love), as well as "F.D.K. (Fearless Doctor Killers)," and "Generation Spokesmodel." Although it appeared that Mudhoney had plenty of gas left in their creative tank, the band would go on hiatus after issuing just one more studio album,1998's TOMORROW HIT TODAY. SKU: 1084731

Sketches Of Spain [Remastered]
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet, flugelhorn); Gil Evans (arranger, conductor); Taft Jordan, Johnny Coles, Louis Mucci, Ernie Royal, Bernie Glow (trumpet); Dick Hixon, Frank Rehak (trombone); Joe Singer, Tony Miranda, Jimmy Buffington, John Barrows, Earl Chapin (French horn); James McAllister, Bill Barber (tuba); Harold Feldman (flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, oboe); Eddie Caine, Al Block (flute); Danny Bank (alto flute, bass clarinet); Romeo Penque (oboe); Jack Knitzer (bassoon); Janet Putman (harp); Paul Chambers (bass); Jimmy Cobb (drums); Elvin Jones, Jose Mangual (percussion). Producers: Teo Macero, Irving Townshend. Reissue producer: Phil Schaap. Recorded at 30th Street Studio, New York, New York on November 15 & 20, 1959 and March 10, 1960. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff and Phil Schaap. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Phil Schaap and Mark Wilder (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). The crown jewel of the epic Evans/Davis triptych that began with MILES AHEAD and PORGY AND BESS, SKETCHES OF SPAIN is as emotionally compelling as any performance in thetrumpeter's remarkable body of works. Combining as it does the emotional gravity of two cultures--the deep song of flamenco music and the rich lament of the blues--SKETCHES OF SPAIN is a musical hybrid of enormous power and beauty. Gil Evans' immense canvas of orchestral colors inspires some of Davis' most deeply felt solo flights. He paints vast vistas of velvety, shimmering night sounds, and through it all runs the mountainous backbone of Spain's native rhythms and chants. The centerpiece of SKETCHES OF SPAIN is the Evans/Davis treatment of the second movement of Rodrigo's "Concierto De Aranjuez." Evans' charts engage Davis in a shifting, insistent dialogue, italicizing the trumpeter's subtle variations and timbral ecstasies with magnificent orchestral flourishes. The surreal patina of three flutes and harp, high muted trumpets and woodwinds, and subterranean trombones, French horns and tuba that define one of the main variations on the theme, is a majestic foil for Davis' expressive tones. Gil Evans liked to say that after Louis Armstrong, no one had affected the sound of the trumpet like Miles Davis. Miles fashioned a vibrato-less, introspective brass cry, made all the more lovely by his lush use of the middle and lower registers. Davis' manipulation of pitch on "Saeta" and "Solea" is so idiomatic, so vocalized, so full of revel and lament, it pierces your heart with heroic resignation and longing. SKETCHES OF SPAIN stands alone as one of the pillars of modern music. SKU: 1014362

All Time Greatest Hits 1959-1965, The
The Drifters: Ben E. King, Charlie Thomas, Dock Green, Elsbearry Hobbs, Johnny Williams, Rudy Lewis, Tommy Evans, Johnny Moore, Eugene Pearson, Johnny Terry (vocals). Compilation producers: Bob Porter, Kim Cooke. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Between 1953 and 1958, the Drifters were among the biggest acts in R&B. The group's members, however, were an unruly bunch, prone to offending club owners and disc jockeys. The group's manager (owner of the band's name) finally fired the entire group in a desperate act that should have spelled the end of the Drifters. In fact, it turned out to be the beginning of a spectacular run of hits. Rather than write off his losses, manager George Treadwell found a new group to be the Drifters, this one led by the legendary Ben E. King. The rest, as they say, is history. Over the next seven years, the Drifters hit over and over again with such classics as"There Goes My Baby," "Dance with Me," "This Magic Moment," "Up on the Roof," and "Under the Boardwalk." The group even survived the departure of King, replacing him with two equally gifted frontmen, Rudy Lewis and Johnny Moore. Fans of R&B history will no doubt find the two-disc ALL TIME GREATEST HITS an indispensable addition to their collection. Another two-disc set, LET THE BOOGIE-WOOGIE ROLL, covers the group's early years. SKU: 1010005

Neil Young & Crazy Horse: Neil Young (vocals, guitar); Frank "Poncho" Sampedro (guitar); Billy Talbot (bass); Ralph Molina (drums). Producers: David Briggs, Billy Talbot, Neil Young. Young hit yet another peak in the 90s and this blisteringly distorted album was the best. He out-grunges everybody with Crazy Horse, the best supportband in the world (ask Ian McNabb). 'Cortez The Killer' is given new life, as is his gentle rocker 'Cinnamon Girl' from 1968. The excitement level of the double set is extraordinary as the gut-wrenching volume of playing fails to irritate - it only ignites the soul for more. SKU: 3102948

Runnin' Wild
Personnel: Sidney Bechet (soprano saxophone); Wild Bill Davidson (cornet); Bob Diehl, Jimmy Archey (trombone); Art Hodes, Joe Sullivan (piano); Walter Page, Pops Foster (bass); Fred Moore, Slick Jones (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Compilation producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at WOR Studios, New York, New York on January 21 & March 23, 1949 and April 19, 1950. Includes liner notes by Art Hilgart. Digitally remastered by Odea Murphy. This late '40s Blue Note date groups jazz legend Sidney Bechet with cornetist Wild Bill Davison and pianist Art Hodes and injects a fresh dose of vitality into Bechet's hard-driving style of New Orleans jazz. Backed by a strong rhythm section, the three musicians swap leads on classics like "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," "Basin Street Blues," and "When the Saints Go Marching In." Such traditional songs as "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho" (note the swinging, hand-clap intro) are given such energized readings asto make them immune to criticisms of shallow revivalism. Davison's ragged tone and strong improvisatory skills are impressive throughout, but Bechet, who only plays soprano sax on this session, is clearly the leader here, blazing ahead of the ensemble at times with his relentless attack, heavy, dramatic vibrato, and clear tone. RUNNIN' WILD is a vital, pulse-quickening collection (just check out the title track) that might surprise those who consider classic jazz "quaint." SKU: 1004024

Impossibility Of Reason, The
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Chimaira: Mark Hunter (vocals); Rob Arnold, Matt DeVries (guitar); Jim LaMarca (bass); Andols Herrick (drums); Chris Spicuzza. Producers: Ben Schigel, Mark Hunter, Rob Arnold. Recorded at Spider Studios, Strongville, Ohio. On Chimaira's second full-length album, THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF REASON, the Midwestern nu-metal outfit charges out of the gate with an electrifying mix of brutally direct Sabbath-esque guitars, the scariest death metal howls this side of Morbid Angel, and double-kick-drum patterns so fast and clean they make Slipknot's drummer sound like the guy who played on "Louie Louie." Unlike many of itssimilarly hard-edged contemporaries, Chimaira features the added novelty of a full-time member who is credited with "lead electronics." Not simply a DJ, knob-twister Chris Spicuzza adds a distinctive palette of ambient noise to the proceedings, which in combination with the sonic mayhem spewed forth by the rest of the band, often makes for a uniquely disconcerting, yet strangely addictive listening experience. Greatest Hits
The last 4 tracks on GREATEST HITS are newly recorded songs for this CD. Personnel includes: Martina McBride (vocals); Biff Watson, James B. Lowry (acoustic guitar); Jerry McPherson (electric guitar); Jerry Douglas (dobro); Larry Franklin (fiddle); Steve Nathan (piano); Glenn Worf (bass); Matt Chamberlain (drums); Dan Tyminiski, Troy Johnson (background vocals). Compilation producers: Martina McBride,Paul Worley. Includes liner notes by Martina McBride and Paul Worley. "Blessed" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Cynics might suggest that pop-country star Martina McBride's greatest assets are here pearly whites and piercing blue eyes. Those who've followed the trajectory of McBride's career (a decade and six albums at the time of this compilation's release) know that the real reasons for her success are a set of super-strong pipes and a knack for picking material from some of Nashville's most hit-bound songwriters. One of those writers, Gretchen Peters, provided McBride with a signature song early on, in the form of "Independence Day," a bold narrative that deals unflinchingly with spousal abuse. To her credit, McBride didn't try to repeat that song's success by becoming Nashville's poster girl for social causes. The rest of the songs on GREATEST HITS cover a variety of topics, but mostly center around the timeless biggies like celebration of love ("My Baby Loves Me"), glory of God (the previously unreleased "Blessed"), and surviving doomed relationships ("Broken Wing"). With its all-encompassing coverage of McBride's career highlights and its bevy of never-before-heard songs, GREATEST HITS is the definitive introduction to McBride's career. SKU: 1067516

Personnel: Will Smith, Larry Blackmon, Cameo, Fuzzy, Ryan Toby, Valvin Roane, Tia Mintze,Left Eye, Camp Lo (vocals); Sauce (various instruments); David Foreman (guitar); Timothy "Tyme" Riley, Keith Winfield (keyboards); Lanar "Kern" Brantley (bass); Poke And Tone, Rob Chiarelli, L.E.S. (drum programming); DJ Jazzy Jeff (scratches); Kenny Greene, Trey Lorenz, Tricia Covington, Coko (background vocals). Producers include: Poke And Tone, Andreo Heard, L.E.S., Jeff Townes, Keith Pelzer. Engineers: Ken Ifill, Poke And Tone, Keith Pelzer, Jeff Townes. "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. High points in this smoothly produced debut solo effort from the rapper formerly known as Fresh Prince include his occasional moments of tenderness, especially "Just the Two of Us," on which Smith addresses his young son against a sample of Bill Withers's song of the same name: "From the first time the doctor placed you in my arms/I knew I'd meet death 'fore I let you meet harm." Smith reveals another hint of vulnerability on "Forever," when he describes his girlfriend: "She...makes me feel that forever is a possibility." What distinguishes BIG WILLIE STYLE, though, are the same playful mood and nimble rhymes that characterized Smith's DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince days. He describes his modus operandi on the lyrically dexterous "Yes, Yes Y'all:" "I rip rhymes for the flow of it/you know the show of it/not the Benz 600 four-door of it/I'm-a rhyme regardless of earnin' long as my heart keeps yearnin'/I got's to keep burnin'." The title track, full of passion, is a highlight, as are the noteworthy lover's rock ditty "We Are in Love," and the positive, upbeat "Jah Can Do It." Palookaville (Parental Advisory) [PA]
'Palookaville' distances itself from the ambient chillout sound of Norman Cook's 2000 release, 'Somewhere Between..' and returns to the triphop, rock influenced sound of his breakthrough album 'You've Come A Long Way Baby'. Featuring real instruments where previously samples were used, the album includes collaborations with artists such as Bootsy Collins and Lateef. Though based in trip hop the album also takes influence from rap, country and punk and even includes a Steve Miller cover. SKU: 6569699

Around The World In A Day
Prince & The Revolution: Prince (vocals, guitar, keyboards, percussion); Wendy Melvoin (vocals, guitar); Lisa Coleman, Dr. Fink (vocals, keyboards); Brown Mark (vocals, bass); Bobby Z (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Novi Novog, Vaj (violin); David Coleman (cello, oud, percussion, background vocals); Suzie Katayama (cello); Sid Page, Marcy Dictorow (strings); Eddie M. (saxophone); Jonathan Melvoin (tambourine, background vocals); Brad Marsh (tambourine); Tim Barr, Annette Atkinson (bass); Sheila E. (drums); Susannah, Taj (backing vocals). Engineers include: David Leonard, Peggy Mac, David Tickle. On AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY, the follow-up to their megahit PURPLE RAIN,Prince and the Revolution add a generous helping of psychedelia to their style, enlisting Prince's father along the way to co-write several songs, including the title track. Many critics at the time dismissed AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY as a turkey follow-up to the outstanding PURPLE RAIN. However, the achingly beautiful ballad "Condition of the Heart," and the stunning "The Ladder," as well as the pop classic "Raspberry Beret," could easily sit beside the band's best material. Ballads and pop gems aside, Prince is as cocky and as sexually self-assured as ever on AROUND THE WORLD. When he vamps and winks his way through "Temptation," the epic album-closer, he moans "everybody on this earth has got a vice and mine, little darlin', is the opposite of ice." SKU: 1006745

Escapology [PA]
Personnel includes: Robbie Williams (vocals); Grant Geissman (acoustic guitar); Gary Nutall (acoustic & electric guitar, background vocals); Neil Taylor (acoustic & electric guitar); Guy Chambers (acoustic & fuzz guitar, piano, Wurlitzer piano, harpsichord);Boots Ottestad, Waddy Watchell (guitar); Eric Marienthal (tenor saxophone); Wayne Bergeron (trumpet); Jim Cox (piano, Hammond B-3 organ, Clavinet); Claire Worrall (piano, Hammond B-3 organ, background vocals); Andy Wallace (piano); Aren Hovda, Dave Stewart (keyboards); Yolanda Charles, Phil Spalding, Leland Sklar (bass); Steve Ferrone, Jeremy Stacey (drums); Andy Duncan (percussion); Michelle Escoffery, Katie Kissoon, Tessa Niles, Paul Williams (background vocals); The London Session Orchestra, Rose Stone Gospel Choir. Recorded in Los Angeles, California and London, England. For ex-Take That member Robbie Williams, beneficiary of an enormous, multi-million dollar contract exceeding even that of Janet Jackson, ESCAPOLOGY continues a successful career that's made him one of Europe's biggest stars since going solo in the late '90s. America remained Williams's next horizon to be conquered and to that end, he moved to the Left Coast where he and longtime producer Guy Chambers got down to compositional woodshedding and emerged with these tracks. Not surprisingly, the rigors of fame come up whether in the context of sexual performance anxiety (the jangly, mid-tempo "How Peculiar") or a quest to sidestep cynicism (a very Elton-like "Something Beautiful"). To his credit, the cheeky teen idol also shows a sensitive side that finds him singing about his grandmother (the self-penned "Nan's Song") and looking for love (the soaring "Feel") while poking fun at his own celebrity (a hook-laden "Handsome Man"). With ESCAPOLOGY, Robbie Williams continues to elude the creative doldrums normally encountered by former teen idols. SKU: 1077461

Paid Tha Cost To Be Tha Boss [PA]
Personnel includes: Snoop Dogg, Pharrell, Latoiya Williams, Jay-Z, Soopafly, Nate Dogg, The Dramatics, Lil' Half Dead, Uncle Charlie Wilson, Mr. Kane, Traci Nelson, Goldie Loc, E-White, Redman, Warren G, Lady Of Rage, Ludacris, RBX. Producers include: E-Swift, Jelly Roll, The Neptunes, Just Blaze, LT Hutton. On PAID THA COST, Snoop Dogg delivers plenty of the kind of visceral, sensuous, West Coast G-Funk that we've come to love him for. The most blatant example is "Stoplight," which samples and nods to P-Funk's ubiquitous "Flashlight," butsomehow ends up sounding more like vintage Rick James gone hip-hop. Though his vintage beats and loopy sense of humor complement that sound perfectly, he doesn't leave things at that. The honey-sweet vocals of LaToiya Williams lend a melodic, slow-jam R&B flavor to the mellow "I Believe in You." A love song from Snoop? Believe it. "Ballin'" features the old-school vocal-harmony soul that's always been close to Snoop's heart, courtesy of the Dramatics. "From tha Chuuuch to Da Palace" ups the humor ante by including a lascivious adaptation of "Buffalo Gals." What's curious is that the already laid-back Snoop often seems to retreat from the spotlight on this album, letting the production and special touches occupy the forefront. Perhaps it's just that he's already proven himself so thoroughly that he's ready to go where no rapper has gone before--egolessness. SKU: 1077611

Native Sense (The New Duets)
Personnel: Chick Corea (piano); Gary Burton (vibraphone, marimba). Recorded at Mad Hatter Studios, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by ChickCorea. NATIVE SENSE (THE NEW DUETS) was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group. "Rhumbata" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. Composition and improvisation merge in a special way in the duets of Chick Corea and Gary Burton. Their association is long-standing, and here they work their magic on a new set of music, all composed by Chick Corea with the exception of Bartok's "Bagatelles #6, #2, and #3" and Thelonius Monk's "Four in One". There's a bridge between classical music and jazz which is crossed with vitality by these two master musicians. There's nothing academic about this music though; the tones of Corea's grand piano and Burton's vibraphone and marimba blend beautifully throughout and Corea's composition "Post Script" leads out of "Bagatelle #6" so seamlessly it's hard to tell where one composer ends and the other begins. Testament (The Complete Slash Recordings)
The Blasters: Dave Alvin, Phil Alvin, John Bazz, Bill Bateman, Gene Taylor, Lee Allen. Producers: The Blasters, Pat Burnette, Jeff Eyrich. Compilation producers: James Austin, Gary Stewart. Engineersinclude: Pat Burnette, Jim Hill, Roger Harris. Includes liner notes by Don Snowden. Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch (Digiprep). There's a small segment of the music-buying populace that was lying in wait for years for this one. The Blasters spent the first half of the 1980s purveying some of the finest roots-rock ever heard, so thoroughly assimilating their blues, rockabilly, country, and R&B influences that their own recordings could have been lost '50s classics. Led by the tireless bar room wail of singer Phil Alvin and the everyman narratives and pealing guitar of younger brother Dave, the band released four albums (the first for a tiny CA indie) and an EP before falling victim to the twin rock-band pitfalls of fraternal discord and poor sales. None of the band's original albums ever made it to CD before this all-inclusive collection of the band's Slash/Warners releases. A wealth of bonus tracks from the tradition-conscious THE BLASTERS and NON-FICTION, the more produced THE HARD LINE and the recklessly rocking live OVER THERE sweeten the pot for longtime fans. Those who've never experienced the Blasters magic before will be taken by both their way with a cover (they not only make Little Willie John's "I'm Shakin'" their own, they commandeer the thing) and their gift for creating working-class novellas that run on Chuck Berry-inspired guitars and Gene Taylor's roadhouse piano style. Stray Cats be damned, these guys were the true inheritors of the American music mantle. SKU: 1071857

Meet The Girl Next Door
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Lil' Mo (vocals); Fabolous, Lil' Kim (rap vocals); Bryan Michael Cox (various instruments). Producers include: Cynthia "Lil Mo" Loving, Precision, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot, Bryan Michael Cox, Chucky Thompson. With a stretch-Hummer limo-load of talent, creativity, and confidence only hinted at on her debut, Lil' Mo throws down for real on MEET THE GIRL NEXT DOOR, her exceptional sophomore effort. First off, Mo is a genuine soul singer. Unlike some of her scale-running, scat-happy contemporaries, every note the diminutive vocalist utters sounds absolutely necessary. Of course it helps that the Lil' Miss is a heck of a songwriter too; the disc finds her organically mixing and matching elements of old-school R&B, new jack swing, and Philly soul as easily as other divas choose nail polish. Lyrically, she has few equals in the world of contemporary R&B, completely eschewing the played out bling-bling/bump 'n' grind themes of hip-hop in favor of highly intelligent ruminations on relationships, career, her child, and the role of strong, successful women in urban culture. Zeit [Remastered]
Tangerine Dream: Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, Peter Baumann. Additional personnel: Steve Schroyder (organ); Florian Fricke (Moog synthesizer); The Cologne Cello Quartett. Recorded at Dierks Studios, Cologne, Germany in 1972. Includes liner notes by Paul Russell. Digitally remastered by Thomas Heimann-Trosien (Eastgate Studios, Vienna, Austria 1995). On its first two albums, pioneering electronic Krautrock group Tangerine Dream made clear its intention to use SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS-era Pink Floyd as a jumping-off point for the band's cosmic explorations. While T. Dream was never anyone's idea of a rock band, the first two albums do feature electric guitar and drums used prominently in a way that at least tips its hat to the rock aesthetic. On ZEIT, the group moves definitively away from rock trappings into purely atmospheric, improvised electronics, creating soundscapes alternately ambient and avant-garde. A key factor in this process was the solidification of the personnel. Synthesist Peter Baumann completed the trio lineup that would remain intact for the next five years and create the bulk of what's regarded as the group's classic work. For most of ZEIT, conventional melody and harmony are abandoned completely in favor of pure electronic textures. Things build slowly as waves of analog synth and heavily processed guitar ebb and flow in these largely rhythmless arrangements. Occasional melodic colors do appear in the form of a cello quartet, andthe subtly elegant majesty of the group's constantly mutating sonic paintings makes ZEIT sound like the soundtrack to an odd-but-memorable dream. Imagine (The Movie)
Personnel includes: John Lennon (vocals, guitar, keyboards); George Harrison (guitar, background vocals); Wayne "Tex" Gabriel (guitar); Stan Bronstein, King Curtis (saxophone); Nicky Hopkins, Billy Preston (piano); Adam Ippolito (keyboards); John Barham (harmonium, vibes); Klaus Voorman, John Ward, Gary Van Scyoc, Ringo Starr, Jim Keltner, Alan White (drums). Producers include: Phil Spector, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, George Martin. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, England; Hotel De La Reine,Montreal, Canada; Madison Square Garden, New York, New York; Ascot Sound Studios. 2 LPs on 1 CD. The John Lennon legacy was furthered and deepened by the film IMAGINE, a documentary that captured post-Beatles Lennon in moments both public and candid, at various points in his development as a solo artist. There are fascinating clips of him at work in the studio, scenes in which he acts upon his political beliefs with bed-ins and the like, and frank interviews. The inevitable soundtrack to the film is more than just a cash-in designed to appeal to rabid Beatles collectors who pay a king's ransom for Ringo's fingernail clippings, though. The album collects some of the finest musical moments from the film and turns them into an illuminating, intimate look at Lennon in his prime. SKU: 1041454
