Mark Hollis
Personnel includes: Mark Hollis (vocals, guitar); Andy Penayi (flute); Tim Holmes (clarinet); Julie Andrews, Maggie Pollock (bassoon); Mark Feltham (harmonica); Henry Lowther (trumpet); Chris Laurence (bass); Martin Ditcham (drums, percussion). Talk Talk frontman Mark Hollis took his sweet time in releasing his 1998 solo debut. Then again, this is the man who said, "Before you play two notes, learn how to play one note--and don't play one note unless you've got a reason to play it." That spirit of minimalism certainly informs MARK HOLLIS, a masterpiece of reflection and restraint. MARK HOLLIS revisits the holy, haunted realm of LAUGHING STOCK, Talk Talk's 1991 swan song. Hollis's tremulous tenor sounds as fragile and self-contained as ever, his Samuel Beckett-like lyric fragments illuminating the deliberate spaces left in the sensitive arrangements. Each of these eight songs is a revelation. Henry Lowther's brassy, braying trumpet suddenly ripples the reflective "Watershed." Woodwinds, harmonica, piano, guitar, and harmonium catch Hollis' words within a tilting kaleidoscopeof instrumental color on "A Life (1895-1915)" and "A New Jerusalem," much in the manner of Morton Feldman. "The Gift" and "The Daily Planet" are moments of pure pop-jazz epiphany, swaying in elegant, unhurried rhythms. Other highlights include the folky, dustbowl yearning of "Westward Bound," and the pensive grace of "Inside Looking Out" and "The Colour of Spring." SKU: 4134258

Incredible
Contains 4 hidden tracks following "Give It Up Let It Go." Mary Mary: Erica Atkins, Tina Atkins (vocals). Additional personnel includes: Baby Dub (various instruments); Michael Thompson, Charlie Bereal (guitar); Jason White (piano); Michael Bereal (keyboards); Andrew "Godfather" Gouche, Ethan Farmer (bass); Teddy "Mano" Campbell (drums); Derrick Walker (percussion). Mary Mary is made up of two young sisters who write and sing together in a style that melds pop,R&B, and a touch of hip-hop with a spiritually oriented lyrical message. Their 2000 debut turned many heads, but the follow-up INCREDIBLE proved to be the one that broke the duo in a major way. The chirpy synths and bubbly groove of "God Bless" meld perfectly with the optimistic nature of the lyrics, perfectly illustrating the template with which Mary Mary meshes the corporeal with the spiritual. And when Erica and Tina take on the harmonically sophisticated climes of the Stevie Wonder-penned "You Will Know," the pair's musical smarts really come to the fore. SKU: 1074203

Recorded Live
2 LPs on 1 CD; the song "The Hobbit" is ommitted from the original LP release. Ten Years After: Alvin Lee (vocals, guitar); Chick Churchill (piano, organ); Leo Lyons (bass); Ric Lee (drums). Recorded live in Amersterdam and Rotterdam, The Netherlands; Frankfurt, Germany; Paris, France. Originally released as a double LP set, RECORDED LIVE was a response to the proliferation of bootlegs of the band's concerts. It was to be as faithful a representation of the band's onstage firepower as possible. In this regard, it succeeds; it's better recorded than their breakthrough UNDEAD, and the performances are generally stronger. The highpoint is the jazzy, nearly 16-minute assault on "I Can't Keep From Crying." (Historical note: On the Blues Project's REUNION IN CENTRAL PARK album, also released in 1973, Al Kooper, who wrote the song, tells the audience that Ten Years After's version paid for his new car that year). There are also enthusiastic run-throughsof the band's best known numbers, including their salacious take on "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" and (of course) their Woodstock showstopper "I'm Going Home." Beatles 1962-1966, The
The Beatles: George Harrison (vocals, guitar, sitar); John Lennon(vocals, guitar); Paul McCartney (vocals, bass); Ringo Starr (vocals, drums). Digitally remastered in 1987-1988 by Mike Jarratt (Abbey Road Studios, London, England), except for "She Loves You" (1992). 1962-1966 (RED ALBUM) includes a booklet with liner notes, lyrics and photographs. From the famous pair of red and blue, this one was always the poor relative, being one or two positions behind in the charts and selling one or two million fewer copies. Quite why will never be known, as the singles contained on this were bigger hits, and make for a better greatest hits package. You cannot tamper with the general opinion of the record buying public. What would be easier is that the every government throughout the world give every child a complete set of Beatles albums when they start school. Everybody reading this book must be familiar with every track on this album, even if they did not own it. They will always be the greatest popular 'beat combo' in the world. SKU: 1006518

Microscopic Sound
Stripping music to its atomic structure, the members of the MICROSCOPIC SOUND set replace the traditional palette of notes and timbres with sensitive frequencies, static, carefully sculpted waves and tones, electronic glitches, and bass pulses. These artists work in exacting miniature, transposing their mesmerizing sonograms onto transparent techno grids and similarly derived dance music structures. Often resembling research findings rather than songs, their compositions reveal the fascinating activity that can occur on music's molecular level. While such paragons of micro-musical exploration as Ryoji Ikeda, Noto, and Thomas Brinkmann are much discussed and admired in experimental electronica circles, the excellent MICROSCOPIC SOUND is one of the first releases to represent this crew of international infrasonic architects in the United States. The mostly exclusive contributions range in audibility from Produkt's boisterous, glitch-riddled electro to the silence-straddling sub-bass, sine wave, and static-crackle soundmaps of Goem and Noto. Sound-sculptingveteran Kim Cascone's subtly contoured, computer-aided ambient designs weigh in on the more melodic side of microscopia. An excerpt from Ikeda's superb 0.C falls between the two poles, as do the whisper-soft funk inflections of Brinkmann's tone-arm-manipulated techno and the mutating chromatic lock-grooves of Komet, Digital (another credit for one-man-industry Mike Ink [Wolfgang Voigt]), S-Nemek, and Sound Track. An ace collection by the UK's estimable Big Beat reissue label, FORTY-FOUR is a smoking set of singles, outtakes and rarities by San Jose's Chocolate Watchband, one of the greatest of the '60s garage-psych bands. More into trippy hard rock than the lighter, more pop-influenced groups of the era such as Strawberry Alarm Clock, etc., the Chocolate Watchband also had the debatable luck of being signed to Capitol's budget label, Tower, where artistic integrity was not high on anyone's list of priorities. This led to releases like 1967's THE INNER MYSTIQUE, the first side of which features three songs played by anonymous studio musicians with no band involvement at all. Conversely, all 13 tracks here--including two produced by Frank Zappa--feature the original band, playingwith spit and fire, in the most gloriously sloppy manner imaginable. Neophytes should start with the classic debut NO WAY OUT, but FORTY-FOUR is essential for fans. SKU: 1054443

Beach Boys Today/Summer Days And Summer Nights [Remastered]
Full title: The Beach Boys Today/Summer Days & Summer Nights. 2 LPs on 1 CD: THE BEACH BOYS TODAY (1965)/SUMMER DAYS (AND SUMMER NIGHTS!!) (1965). The Beach Boys: Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love, Dennis Wilson, Al Jardine. Producer: Brian Wilson. Reissue producer: Mark Linett. Recorded at Western Recording Studios, Gold Star Studios, CBS Studios & Universal/Radio Recorders Studios, Hollywood, California & Columbia Recording Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. Originally released on Capitol (2269/2354). Includes liner notes by David Leaf, Mark Linett & Dick Clark. Digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Although other Beach Boys albums have received greater critical acclaim, TODAY is almost unbeatable for its high percentage of unpretentious, infectious two-minute pop songs. The group's rock & roll roots are revisited with "Do You Wanna Dance" and "Good To My Baby." "Dance, Dance, Dance" is a highly underrated Brian Wilson song, complemented with gorgeous ballads such as "She Knows Me Too Well" and "Please Let Me Wonder." The seeds of PET SOUNDS' sunshine pop glory were sown with this impressive 1965 record. Later that year, the Boys took a brief look back at their summer-fun days with SUMMER DAYS & SUMMER NIGHTS, which contained the beach-party evergreens "California Girls" and "Help Me, Rhonda." Listening to such unassuming fare as "Amusement Parks U.S.A." it's hardto believe that the Beach Boys' pop art masterwork was mere months away. SKU: 1055880

Who Killed The Zutons
Liverpool'sZutons blend pop, jazz, funk and general eclectism in their self proclaimed 'carnival music' on this their debut album. The album follows on from their top 20 single 'Pressure Point' evoking Devo, Captain Beefheart and Talking Heads amongst others. Whereas earlier comparisons were made with fellow Liverpudians The Coral, 'Who Killed The Zutons' shows the band defining their own unique style. SKU: 6573909

Naked Without You
Personnel: Taylor Dayne (vocals); Saul Zonana (acoustic guitar, bass); Tony Bruno (electric guitar); Tim Pierce, Craig Else, Louis Mettoyer, Joel Shearer (guitar); B.G. Graziose, Rob Arbittier, Michael Raylton, Jamie Muhoberac (keyboards); Reggie Hamilton (bass); Carmen Rizzo (drums, percussion, programming); Ernie Lake, Curt Bisquera (drums); Tom Keane (programming); Kato, Sheree Fort Payne, Therese Willis, Evonne Williams, Maxanne Lewis (background vocals). Producers include: Taylor Dayne, Charlton Pettus, B.G. Graziose, Ernie Lake, Tommy Sims. Though Dayne made her name as an aggressively marketed dance-pop diva, the years have shown her to be more substantive than might have been initially supposed. NAKED WITHOUT YOU is arguably Dayne's most satisfying, substantive outing thus far, and certainly her most soulful. Dayne's vocal style walks a fine line between pop and R&B, not tied down to either style, but incorporating elements of bothin service of a very distinctive sound. For a production as technology-driven as that of NAKED WITHOUT YOU, the arrangements are surprisingly low key, relying mostly on syncopated electronic and acoustic drum tracks and subtle keyboard textures. Dayne's voice does the rest, filling the air with orgiastic evocations of romance and plain old sex. SKU: 1039534

O Brother Where Art Thou
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Includes a 24-page booklet with liner notes by Robert K. Oermann. O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? won the 2002 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media. "O Death" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. "I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals. Those kings of cinematic quirkiness, the Coen brothers, fashioned their film O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? as a contemporary adaption of Homer's Odyssey, centering around a group of American chain-gang prisoners. The film's earthy Southern setting makes it a natural for a bluegrass-oriented soundtrack, for which producer T-Bone Burnett picked the cream of the country crop. "Didn't Leave Nobody But the Baby," for example, is a summit meeting of some of the finest contemporary female country vocalists (Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, and Alison Krauss). The old school isn't forgotten either, as evidenced by a chilling a cappella rendering of "O Death," courtesy of Ralph Stanley, and by the closing cut, where the Stanley Brothers issue anelegant plea to heaven with "Angel Band." Best Of Friends, The
Personnel includes: John Lee Hooker, Van Morrison (vocals, guitar); Bonnie Raitt (vocals, slide guitar); Eric Clapton, Ry Cooder, Carlos Santana, Jimmie Vaughan, Roy Rogers, Ben Harper, Robert Cray, David Hidalgo, Cesar Rosas, Danny Caron (guitar); Charlie Musselwhite, John "Juke" Logan (harmonica); Gil Bernal (tenor saxophone, background vocals); Steve Berlin (baritone saxophone); Eric Barber (bass saxophone); Johnnie Johnson, Ike Turner (piano); Booker T. Jones (organ); Chester Thompson (keyboards, synthesizer); Bill Payne, Jim Pugh, Charles Brown (keyboards); Reggie McBride, Nick Lowe, Maurice Cridlin, Richard Cousins, Juan Nelson, Conrad Lozano, Benny Rietveld, Samuel Taylor (bass); Jim Keltner, Scott Mathews, Kevin Hayes (drums). Producers include: John Porter, Roy Rogers, Ry Cooder, Carlos Santana, Van Morrison. Engineers include: Samuel Lehmer, Alan Sides, Jim Gaines. When John Lee Hooker recorded 1989's THE HEALER, it marked the beginning of the most successful period of his career. In the ensuing years, the Hook made a number of commercially and critically acclaimedrecords that found him playing alongside a host of legendary friends and admirers. THE BEST OF FRIENDS gathers together the cream of these collaborations in one place. Being one of the greatest blues musicians of all time means that John Lee Hooker's made some pretty famous acquaintances along the way. This means Los Lobos and Juke Logan back him on a swinging reading of "Dimples" and Carlos Santana helps create a kind of samba blues vibe for "The Healer" and "Chill Out (Things Gonna Change)." Also included on FRIENDS are "I'm in the Mood," Hooker's Grammy Award-winning duet with Bonnie Raitt and two tracks with acolyte Van Morrison: the ominous "I Cover The Waterfront" and the wistful "Don't Look Back." The inclusion of new tracks with Ben Harper ("Burnin' Hell") and Eric Clapton ("Boogie Chillen") sweetens this package, but it is Hooker's solo reading of "Tupelo" that induces goosebumps. You Can Dance
Producers include: Stephen Bray, Jellybean, Mark Kamins, Madonna, Patrick Leonard. Includes liner notes by Brian Chin. This is not a true greatest hits, but a collection of newly remixed (1987) versions of her hits. Madonna's meteoric rise to stardom had as its springboard the early '80s NY club scene; dance music has provided a home base for any of the musical journeys her widely varied career has seen her take. 1987's YOU CAN DANCE found the reigning queen of pop revisiting some of her more famous works, courtesy of the mixing skills of some of the friends she'd made along the way, notably NY DJ and mix artist Jellybean Benitez (a name which was inseparable from the dance music genre at the time). Producer of Madonna's breakthrough "Holiday," he returns here with two slick remixes of the track, highlighting some of its many catchy instrumental nuances. The quintessential Madonna dance track, "Into The Groove," which inspired the album's title, bears the mark of editor Shep Pettibone. Pettibone's reassembling of the track turns it into an all-new dance experience, with inspired breaks and gliding accompaniment. The romantic classic "Over And Over" reinvents the original, augmenting Nile Rodgers's tight production with extra percussion and keyboards. SKU: 1005398

Nothing Safe (The Best Of The Box) [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Alice In Chains: Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Mike Inez (bass); Sean Kinney (drums). Producers: Dave Jerden, Toby Wright, Rick Parasher, Alice In Chains. Engineers include: Bryan Carlstrom, Toby Wright, Tom Nellen. "Get Born Again" was nominated for the 2000Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. Acting as a precursor to the box set MUSIC BANK, NOTHING SAFE: THE BEST OF THE BOX gives listeners a glimpse into the 12-year career of one of the forefathers of the Seattle sound. The previously unreleased studio track, "Get Born Again" shows that Alice in Chains are firmly grounded in their haunting minor-key vocal harmonies, memorable hooks, and larger-than-life guitar sound. NOTHING SAFE includes some shining moments from all the band's previous releases. An emotionally-charged version of "Rooster" shows off the band's live prowess, while "What the Hell Have I" enchants with its marriage of Indian-flavored guitar and sitar contrasted against distorted vocals and tasteful percussion. On the brink of a new millennium of shifting musical tastes and trends, Alice in Chains keeps something safe: its distinctive sound and vision. SKU: 1019425
