Brushfire Fairytales
Personnel includes: Jack Johnson (vocals, guitar, piano); Ben Harper (slide guitar);Merlo (bass); Adam Topol (drums, percussion); Tommy Jordan (steel drums). Surfer-turned-rocker Jack Johnson has composed songs for G. Love and Special Sauce, and is signed to Ben Harper's manager's record label, so it's no surprise that his debut turns out to be the kind of laid-back acoustic funk beloved of fans of both those outfits. What is surprising, however, is the unpretentious way these songs are presented--BRUSHFIRE FAIRYTALES is packed with bare-bones arrangements that highlight Johnson's catchy way with a lyric, so that when something unusual happens, such as the steel drums that dimly inhabit the background of "Flake," it's almost shocking. Johnson's songs are simultaneously well crafted and executed in an almost throwaway manner. "Fortunate Fool" is airy yet acidic--this surfer dude is no airhead--while "F-Stop Blues," on the surface a paean to the surfer lifestyle, is really a lament for wasted time that features Johnson's pleasant, lazy vocals to excellent effect. BRUSHFIRE FAIRYTALES displays the kind of insouciance born of innocence, almost as if no-one involved cared if the album sold ten copies or ten million--and of course that's the attraction. All 4 One
All-4-One: Jamie Jones, Delious, Tony Borowiak, Alfred Nevarez (vocals). Producers: Gary St. Clair, Tim O'Brien, David Foster. "I Swear" won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. It was also nominated for Song Of The Year. Part of the recent wave in vocal groups in the quasi-doo-wop revival, All-4-One is a quartet whose roots are as equally grounded in the vocal arrangements of '50s acts like The Flamingos as they are in the suave stylings of '70s stalwarts Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes. Not content allowing themselves to blend in with the proliferation of Boyz II Menwannabes, All-4-One take a more liberal path towards putting together an interesting debut. Foremost is the choice to cover and totally re-interpret labelmate John Michael Montgomery's huge country hit "I Swear," giving it more of a barbershop quartet feeling. While "So Much In Love" brings to mind the image of four singers gathered around a street corner harmonizing for lucky pedestrians, "Breathless" and "Something About You" find their muse tilling the fertile ground laid down by predecessors like Kool & The Gang, with a slight dose of new jack lite. "Here If You're Ready" is more pleading while "The Bomb" is a phat jam that is borderline risque in the vein of Bell Biv DeVoe with a healthy dash of Cameo thrown in for good measure. SKU: 5060722

Skeletons [PA]
Nothingface: Matthew Holt (vocals); Tom Maxwell (guitar); Bill Gaal (keyboards, bass); Sickles (drums). Recorded at The Armoury Studios, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Originally lumped in with the faceless rap-rock hordes that stormed the charts in the wake of Korn and Limp Bizkit's late-'90s commercial success, Nothingface distinguished itself early on with a thoughtful, fist-tight, precision-ground style of nu-metal, unafraid to temper death-metal inspired shrieking with bitsof actual melody and catchy hooks. On SKELETONS the group further explores both sides of its split personality. Though the band still convincingly rips out some great Pantera/Mudvayne-esque larynx-shredding fare, it really shines on the vocal harmony-laden alternative rock-sounding tracks, which often have more in common with Incubus or Deep Elm Records-style emo bands than with the combo's more doom & gloom-oriented contemporaries. Time Out Of Mind
Personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, piano); Robert Britt (acoustic & electric guitars); Daniel Lanois (acoustic & electric guitars, mando-guitar); "Bucky" Baxter (acoustic & pedal steel guitars); Duke Robillard (guitar); Cindy Cashdollar (slide guitar); Jim Dickinson (Wurlitzer piano, pump organ, keyboards); Augie Meyers (accordion, organ); Tony Garnier (acoustic & electric basses); Winston Watson, Jim Keltner, David Kemper, Brian Blade (drums); Tony Mangurian (percussion). Recorded at Criteria Recording Studios, Miami, Florida. TIME OUT OF MIND won the 1998 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Cold Irons Bound" won the 1998 Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. This album by the quintessential singer-songwriter comes after a long layoff from recording original material. Dylan's previous two albums were powerful collections of traditional songs, and the album that preceded them was full of some rather iffy original tunes, so all eyes were on Dylan to make one of his patented surprise comebacks. As luck would have it, that's exactly what TIME OUT OF MIND turns out to be. Produced by Daniel Lanois, who manned the boards for Dylan's best latter-day album, OH MERCY, this one has the kind of raw, spontaneous vibe that serves Zimmy's music so well. Loss and world-weariness abound in the lyrics, and Dylan articulates these emotions perfectly, in a manner that seems simultaneously casual and precise. Songs like "Standing In The Doorway" and "Million Miles" are bathed in sorrow and emotional desolation, but are so well-crafted that their solipsism is irresistible. An all-star cast including Ry Cooder and Duke Robillard provides the sparse, rough-edged, bluesy accompaniment that casts Dylan's compositionsin the perfect musical light. Bob's back! SKU: 1005308

World Outside My Window
Personnel includes: Glenn Lewis (vocals); Andre Harris, Vidal Davis(various instruments); David Schneider (oboe, English horn). Principally recorded at Vidal and Dre's Place, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. "What distinguishes young R&B singer Glenn Lewis from his many peers?" you might inquire. Well, Lewis employs no gimmicks to set himself apart from the pack. He doesn't ape R&B stars of the past, or utilize a flurry of expletives like too many of his contemporaries. Instead, Mr. Lewis is distinguished by sheer musicality, an engaging vocal personality, and the ability to make WORLD OUTSIDE MY WINDOW sound like something new under the sun. Lewis neither falls into the trap of hiding behind heavy hip-hop shadings or falling all over himself with romantic overstatements. Rather, his light, friendly voice skips elegantly across melodies that bend compositional rules in the service of an idiosyncratic but immediately accessible style. Ultimately, Lewis sounds like the kind of guy you'd like to have a couple of beers with (or if you're a starry-eyed lady, perhaps a bit of the bubbly). SKU: 1071495

Here And There (Royal Festival Hall/Madison Square Gardens 1974)
Personnel: Elton John (vocals, piano); Lesley Duncan (vocals); John Lennon (vocals, guitar); Davey Johnstone (guitar, background vocals); Dee Murray (bass, background vocals); Nigel Olsson (drums, background vocals); Ray Cooper (congas, duck calls, percussion). Engineers: Team Mobile (disc 1, all tracks); Fedco Truck Mobile (disc 2, all tracks). Recorded live at The Royal Festival Hall, London, England on May 18, 1974 and Madison Square Garden, New York, New Yorkon November 28, 1974. Includes liner notes by John Tobler and Paul Gambaccini. Digitally remastered by Tony Cousins (Metropolis Mastering, London, England). Elton John originally released 1975's HERE AND THERE to fulfill contractual obligations to Dick James Music, the label he started out on. Unlike most artists content to put out something sub-par, EJ instead released a pair of recent, exemplary live recordings. The CD reissue includes a number of outstanding additions. The original record split its tracks between two 1974 shows: London's Royal Festival Hall and Madison Garden. John began the London show by revisiting his earlier material, starting solo with "Skyline Pigeon" before being joined by the band for "Border Song." The first batch of bonus material includes "Take Me To The Pilot," "Burn Down The Mission" and a rare duet with Lesley Duncan, the composer of "Love Song." The polite performance of the London material is in direct contrast to the maniacal energy of John's MSG show. Complementing the effervescent readings of Elton hits such as "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" and "Rocket Man" is John Lennon's last live performance. This mini-part of the set (previously available as a separate EP) features the duo's collaboration "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" along with a pair of Beatles classics, "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" and "I Saw Her Standing There." Raw Power
This 1997 reissue of RAW POWER was digitally remixed by Iggy Pop, Danny Kadar and Bruce Dickinson. Pop had long complained about David Bowie's mix of the original LP. Iggy & The Stooges: Iggy Pop (vocals); James Williamson (guitar); Ron Asheton (bass, vocals); Scott Asheton (drums). Reissue producer: Iggy Pop. Recorded at CBS Studios, London, England. Originally released on Columbia (32111). The booklet contains an interview with Iggy Pop conducted and edited by Arthur Levy. All tracks have been digitally remastered. "Raw power is a guaranteed OD," sneered Iggy Pop (ne Iggy Stooge) on the title track of his band's final, most deliberate assault. RAW POWER caught Iggy & The Stooges in flux--Iggy received top billing and called himself Pop, making the further disintegration of the band inevitable. Guitarist Ron Asheton moved to the bass to make way for James Williamson, thus bringing new life andless deliberate simplicity to the sound. Yet in the midst of such inner turmoil, the band released its most thorough record to date. Aided by Williamson's fuller guitar sound, Pop's songs filled out from power-chord teen anthems to epic tales of modern life. Pop's more pointed attacks were obvious in the first lyric: "I'm a street-walking cheetah with a heart full of napalm." RAW POWER was Pop's gift to the world's forgotten boys and girls, and proof that the end of the Stooges only meant a new era for Pop. SKU: 1006095

Let It Bleed [SACD] [Remastered]
The Rolling Stones: Keith Richards (vocals, guitar); Mick Jagger (vocals); Brian Jones, Mick Taylor (guitar); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel: Ry Cooder (slide guitar); Ian Stewart (piano); Al Kooper, Leon Russell (keyboards); London Bach Choir. The last Stones studio album of the '60s finds the band, for perhaps the first time, accurately reflecting the spirit of its age. The erstwhile bad boy outsiders of rock now found themselves firmly in the center of the social and political post-'68 whirlwind, and faced up to the challenge magnificently. The band's confident climb to its artistic peak was begun by BEGGAR'S BANQUET, but LET IT BLEED is a quantum leap even from that musical milestone. The album's opener, "Gimme Shelter," with its insinuating guitar introduction, leads us decisively out of Flower Power and into a world where rape and murder are "just a shot away," and the Devil of BANQUET is very much alive and taking names. There's a nod to seminal influence Robert Johnson, whose "Love in Vain" is a mandolin-accompanied highlight. The climax arrives in the form of "You Can't Always Get What You Want," bearing references to the fallout ofthe Swinging London era. LET IT BLEED finds the Stones brimming with musical confidence and artistic inspiration. SKU: 1076786

Live Magic
Queen: Freddie Mercury (vocals); Brian May (guitar); John Deacon (bass); Roger Taylor (percussion). Additional personnel: Spike "The Duke" Edney (guitar, keyboards, background vocals). Recorded live in Nepstadion, Budapest, Hungary; Knebworth Park and Wembley Stadium, England between July and August 1986. If you're searching for a concise and compact sample of Queen inconcert, the single disc LIVE MAGIC is the only logical choice. Originally issued as a European-only release in late 1986, it was finally released stateside 10 years later. Recorded at stops in Budapest, Knebworth Park, and Wembley Stadium during Queen's A KIND OF MAGIC tour, LIVE MAGIC compiles live renditions of Queen's greatest hits from 1974 up to 1986. And although it's not an actual full-length set from the tour (the double-disc LIVE AT WEMBLEY '86 is a complete show), LIVE MAGIC is highly recommended to newcomers curious about the unique Queen concert experience. The lead-off track from 1986's A KIND OF MAGIC, "One Vision," turns out to be a superb concert opener, as you can actually hear the audience's cheers grow louder while the song's introduction leads to the band's grand entrance. Queen soon follows it up with an onslaught of hits--"Seven Seas Of Rhye," "Radio GaGa," "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Hammer To Fall," "Under Pressure" and many others. The track "Friends Will Be Friends" is inserted in the expected closing medley "We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions," adding a pleasant surprise for old-time fans. SKU: 1006450

Cover Girl
Personnel: Shawn Colvin (vocals, acoustic guitar); Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Milt Grayson (vocals); Steve Addabbo (12-string guitar); Steuart Smith (acoustic & electric guitars, slide guitar, Ferrington high-string & baritone guitars, mandolin, keyboards, bass); Larry Campbell (pedal steel guitar, fiddle); T-Bone Wolk (accordion, bass); Benmont Tench (Hammond B-3 organ); David Kahne (keyboards, bass, programming); Lee Sklar, Larry Klein (bass); Frank Vilardi, Kenny Aronoff (drums, percussion); Jim Keltner, Andy Kravitz (drums); Kenny White, Curtis King, Frank Floyd, Fonzie Thornton (background vocals). Producers: David Kahne, Shawn Colvin, Steuart Smith. Engineers include: Julie Last, Steve Addabbo, Ray Martin. Recorded at Shatter Island Sound, Sony Music Studios, and live at the Bottom Line, New York; Sony Music Studios, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Shawn Colvin. COVER GIRL was nominated for Best Contemporary Folk Album in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards. It's a sure bet that if you enjoy Shawn Colvin's breathy, yet gymnastic vocals and like to listen to obscure folk-rock songs, COVER GIRL is the album for you. Shawn has recorded a dozen of her favorites--from the slickly produced version of The Police's "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," to W.A. Ramsey's rare find, "Satin Sheets"--in a live acoustic setting. Standouts include her dramatic interpretation of Greg Brown's "One Cool Remove" (with help from Mary-Chapin Carpenter) and Judee Sills' folk nugget, "There's A Rugged Road." She gives a deliberate, tempered reading of the Talking Heads' inventively wild "This Must be The Place," and an enthusiastic take on Dylan's classic "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go." Also included are songs by Robbie Robertson, Steve Earle, Jimmy Webb and Tom Waits. Yet with all those heavyweight songwriters represented, the unlikely highlight is by a relative unknown, Roly Salley, whose "Killing The Blues" is incisively and starkly interpreted during a powerhouse performance from New York'sBottom Line. COVER GIRL is not only a good listen, it is an interesting insight into the ingredients that created an artist like Colvin. SKU: 1001159

Misses
Personnel includes: Joni Mitchell (vocals, arranger, acoustic guitar, dulcimer, piano, keyboards, percussion, programming); David Baerwald (vocals); James Taylor (guitar, background vocals); Bill Dillon, Michael Landau, Robben Ford (guitar); Abe Most (clarinet); Wayne Shorter (soprano saxophone); Chuck Findley (trumpet); Larry Klein (keyboards, bass, percussion); Joe Sample (keybords); Max Bennett, Jaco Pastorius (bass); Manu Katche (drums, percussion); Vinnie Colaiuta, John Guerin (drums); Don Alias (congas); Alex Acuna, Michael Fisher, Emil Richards, Bobbye Hall (percussion); Benjamin Orr, Don Henley (background vocals). Producers include: Joni Mitchell, Larry Klein, Mike Shipley. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. While HITS, released the same day, concentrates on songs that have entrenched themselves in the public consciousness, MISSES centers on the ones that may have slipped through the cracks over the years, but are just as deserving of your rapt attention. The bulk of this collection is occupied by songs from Mitchell's late '80s and '90s albums, which contained some of her most innovative and adventurous material. It was that very experimentalism that alienated Mitchell from her top-40 fans, which may have been a blessing in disguise. Freed of public expectations, the composer could now explore all the arcane intricacies of her muse. Mitchell's '90s work, as represented by "Sex Kills" and "Passion Play (When All The Slaves Are Free)," has an overt socio-political context, giving her a more earthly focus than did the personal, abstract concerns of her earlier, better-known work. She addresses environmental issues, class struggle and AIDS without the didacticism that brings down similar efforts by others. The smooth, elegant production Mitchell favored on her later releases left many folk purists cold, but there are endlesslayers of delicately-arranged harmonic tapestries to be appreciated in late-model Joni. MISSES also features some unjustly obscure tracks from early albums, including "The Arrangement" and "A Case Of You." Whatever period of Mitchell's work you favor, MISSES offers an opportunity to delve deeper into the oeuvre of a complicated and unpredictable artist. SKU: 1005158

Rock 'n' Roll Circus (December 11th 1968)
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals); Keith Richards (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); Brian Jones (electric & slide guitars); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). The Dirty Mac: John Lennon (vocals, guitar); Eric Clapton (guitar); Keith Richards (bass); Mitch Mitchell (drums). Additional performers: Jethro Tull, The Who, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, Yoko Ono, Ivry Gitlis, Nicky Hopkins. Producers: Jimmy Miller, Jody Klein, Lenne Allik. Recorded live in England on December 10-11, 1968. Includes liner notes by David Dalton. THE ROLLING STONES ROCK AND ROLL CIRCUS documents a December 1968 show, originally intended for broadcast on British television, that featured clowns, acrobats, tigers, a fire-eater, the Rolling Stones and a menagerie of musician friends that included the Who, Eric Clapton, John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The show never aired. The Stones, unhappy with their performance, shelved it. A clip of the Who performing "A Quick One While He's Away" made it into the documentary "The Kids Are Alright," but the rest of the show remained on the shelf until the 1996 release of a laser disc, video, and this soundtrack. The Stones put together this circus shortly after releasing BEGGAR'S BANQUET. Ringmaster/producer Mick Jagger recruited the above friends along with Marianne Faithfull, Taj Mahal and the relatively-unknown Jethro Tull. Twenty hours of filming resulted in a production that alternates between vaudevillian spectacle and magical rock and roll performances. Especially noteworthy is a blistering version of the Beatles' "Yer Blues" by the Dirty Mac, a supergroup featuring John Lennon on rhythm guitar and vocals, Eric Clapton on lead, Keith Richards on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums. The Stones went on at 1 in the morning on December 11, performing a set that included several songs from BEGGAR'S BANQUET and the not-yet-released "You Can't Always Get What You Want," sometimes playing a song two or three times to get it right for TV. Despite the numerous takes and the late hour, the Stones' intensity never flagged. This is, despite what they thought, a great performance. It buildsup to a hypnotic "Sympathy For The Devil" and a rousing sing-along version of "Salt Of The Earth" that ends the circus. SKU: 5064040

Special Edition
Infamous Mobb: Ty Nitty, Gambino, Godfather. Additional personnel includes: Mobb Deep, Tragedy Khadafi, Big Rapper Noyd, Hostyle, Chinky. Producers include: The Alchemist, DJ Muggs, Havoc. This trio of Mobb Deep-affiliated rappers (with the Cosa Nostra-inspired monikers Godfather, Ty Nitty, and Gambino) here trade heavily on the name of their more famous counterparts. Whether they should be nervously looking over their shoulders or not, their debut SPECIAL EDITION contains enough moments of thug-related mayhem to rouse the curiosity of fansof the Mobb Deep collective. For instance, there's the brooding menace of "Mobb Niggaz (The Sequel)," and the sense that time (and the law) may be catching up with the narrator of "B.I.G.-T.W.I.N.S." But the Infamous Mobb don't stray far from their roots--for instance, "Back in the Days" name-checks an old school rapper Kurtis Blow and an old school street sport--double Dutch rope-jumping (as well as the first time the protagonist was arrested--ah, the memories!)--to provide a little contrast to the unrelenting thuggery. While the Infamous Mobb won't give their namesakes much of a run for their money, SPECIAL EDITION retains enough interest to lift it above the mere run-of-the-mill. SKU: 1071953

I'm Your Man
The lyrics to "Take This Waltz" are based on Federico Garcia Lorca's poem "Little Viennese Waltz." Personnel: Leonard Cohen (vocals, arranger, various instruments); Anjani, Jennifer Warnes, Evelyine Hebey, Mayel Assouly, Elisabeth Valletti, Jude Johnstone (vocals); Jean-Philippe Rykiel, Jeff Fisher (arrangers, various instruments); Michel Robidoux (arranger, keyboards, drums); Roscoe Beck (arranger); Bob Stanley (guitar); Sneaky Pete Kleinow (steel guitar); John Bilezikjian (oud); Raffi Hakopian (violin); Richard Baudet (saxophone); Larry Cohen(keyboards); Peter Kisilenko (bass); Vinnie Colaiuta, Tom Brechtlein (drums); Lenny Castro (percussion). Producers: Leonard Cohen, Roscoe Beck, Michel Robidoux, Gean-Michel Reusser. Engineers include: Ian Terry, Roger Guerin, Francois Deschamps. Recorded at Studio Tempo and DMS Studios, Montreal, Canada; Rock Steady, Los Angeles, California; Studio Montmartre, Paris, France; Soundworks, New York, New York. Contemporary music's poet laureate, Leonard Cohen performs in a universe of pessimism, cynicism, spirituality and profound romance, all stirred with a dash of wit. On I'M YOUR MAN, his acid words burn deep to the soul. Cohen's poetry deals with powerful demons--"You loved me as a loser, but now you're worried that I just might win/You know the way to stop me, but you don't have the discipline/How many nights I've prayed for this: to let my work begin." He is obsessed with religion--"Everybody knows what you've been through/From the bloody cross on top of calvary to the beach at Malibu"--and has a love/hate relationship with himself--"My friends are gone and my hair is grey/I ache in places where I used to play." Often, existential dilemmas rear their complex heads ("They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom"), but it is eroticism that truly drives Leonard Cohen--"I'd drive howl at your beauty like a dog in heat/I'd claw at your heart and I'd tear at your sheet/I'd say 'please, please, I'm your man.'" Oh yes, there's music also. Cohen's deep, gruff vocals are offset by female singers, and by moody, textured instrumentation ranging from rock and jazz to classical and folk. Yet it is the language that is the true star of I'M YOUR MAN. SKU: 1006249

Born Under A Bad Sign [Digipak] [ECD] [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Albert King (vocals, guitar);Joe Arnold (horns); Isaac Hayes (piano). Booker T. & The MG's: Booker T. Jones (piano); Steve Cropper (guitar); Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass); Al Jackson, Jr. (drums). The Memphis Horns: Wayne Jackson, Andrew Love (horns). Recorded at Stax Recording Studio, Memphis, Tennessee between March 1966 and June 1967. Includes original release liner notes by Deanie Parker. The giant left-handed guitarist was no stranger to the recording studio by 1966, but Albert King had still to make his mark with the record-buying public. When he linked up with the cream of Stax's Memphis musicians, including Booker T. And The MGs and the Memphis Horns, that connection was made. "Laundromat Blues", "Oh, Pretty Woman" and "Crosscut Saw" set the scene for "Born Under A Bad Sign" and "The Hunter", which quickly found their way into the repertoires of Cream and Free. The convolutions of his guitar style were perfectly complemented by the trademark Stax funk rhythms. The team went on to make many more singles and albums, none of which could surpass the achievements of their first meeting. SKU: 1067257

Ommadawn
Personnel includes: Mike Oldfield, Paddy Moloney. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Ommadawn represents a creative peak for Oldfield that is often overshadowed by the huge commercial success of his debut Tubular Bells. Oldfield employed the same format he had used on his previous two albums, with both sides ofthe album comprising a lengthy instrumental collage. This time he drew on a greater range of musical styles, using recurring motifs that had recognizable African, Eastern European and Irish sources (Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains being responsible for the latter). The album was also notable for the way Oldfield collaborated with the other musicians, drawing attention away from his image as the self-styled studio recluse. SKU: 1004889

Electric Waco Chair
The Waco Brothers: Jon Langford (vocals, acoustic, electric & electric guitars); Dean Schlabowske (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Tracey Dear (vocals, mandolin); Durante (steel & baritone guitars); Alan Doughty (bass); Lil' Willy Goulding (drums). The Waco Cousins: Kingsize Ken (vocals, organ); Kelly Hogan, Jimmy C. Langford (vocals); Jon Rauhouse (Hawaiian guitar); John Rice (fiddle); Barcley McKay (keyboards). Producers: The Waco Brothers, Ken Sluiter. Engineers: Kengineer, Mike Konopka, Dan Glomski. Recorded at Kingsize Sound Laboratories & Schuba's Tavern, Chicago, Illinois. Blood relatives to the mighty Mekons, the Waco Brothers have been described as Clash meets (Johnny) Cash. They're really closer to the lean, crackling twang of Steve Earle, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and the Band, mixed with the oblique, vinegary working-class angst of Graham Parkerand the more plain-spoken angst of Merle Haggard. The Waco Brothers' country influence is more implicit than overt; it's present in the vivid sound of the steel guitar and a blue-collar sense of the inexorability of life. "When I Get My Rewards" is a haunted waltz of fervent desire that Haggard or Cash should cover. "Nothing to Say" is a vitriolic, blues-shaded Stones-meet-T. Rex rocker that articulates discontent at the current glut of style over content, while the sardonic yet plaintive "Where in the World" wouldn't be out of place on Neil Young's ZUMA or AMERICAN STARS AND BARS albums. Of the two main songwriters, Jon Langford's voice is Northern England-accented, dusty and sarcastic, while Dean Schlabowske's vocals are deep and spirited (he sounds a bit like Dave Alvin). With ELECTRIC WACO CHAIR the Waco Brothers prove they can walk the line with the best of them. SKU: 1049006

Slippery When Wet [ECD] [Remastered]
Cassette available on Mercury (830 264). NOTES: Bon Jovi: Jon Bon Jovi (vocals); Richie Sambora (acoustic & electric guitars, guitar synthesizer, talk box, background vocals); Dave Bryan (keyboards, background vocals); Hugh McDonald (bass, background vocals); TicoTorres (drums, percussion). Recorded at Little Mountain, Vancouver, British Columbia. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by George Marino (Summer 1998, Sterling Sound, New York, New York). Bon Jovi took a few faltering steps with their promising self-titled debut album and its shoddy 7800 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT follow-up. However, it was with this third record, a mixture of New Jersey storytelling and songwriter/collaborator Desmond Child's keen awareness of commercial appeal, that the perfect equation of songs and suss was established. The almost noble "Wanted Dead Or Alive" spawned a thousand copycat monochrome, on-the-road videos, while the sure-fire snap of "Livin' On A Prayer" and "You Give Love A Bad Name" simply elevated the banner much higher. Beyond The Storm
BEYOND THE STORM contains 28 tracks, including 16 previously unreleased songs. While Tangerine Dream amassed its vast catalog throughout the '70sand '80s, chief Dreamer Edgar Froese was quietly releasing influential records of his own. This handy, two-disc set is a fine collection of some of the better moments from Froese's numerous solo outings, including 15 new tracks recorded specifically for this set. Surprisingly, the "new" stuff segues into the older tracks quite well. No doubt this is due to Froese's remixing of some of the historical material to a high digital polish-embellishing here, trimming there. Froese's mastery of his instruments is in full bloom, from the bubbling sequencers and piping clarion calls of "Year of the Falcon" to the picturesque mesas and thumping squalls of beats populating the "Shores of Guam." With detailed liner notes tracing Froese's solo career and numerous anecdotal info-bytes, BEYOND THE STORM plays catch-up for Teutonic completists and provides a port of entry for the inquiring novice. Notorious KIM, The
Personnel includes: Lil' Kim, Grace Jones, Lil' Cease, Mario Winans, Carl Thomas, Cee-Lo, Puff Daddy, Mary J. Blige, Prestige. Producers include: Sean "Puffy" Combs, Mario "Yellowman" Winans, Deric "D-Dot" Angelettie, Daven "Prestige" Vanderpool, Roosevelt "Bink Dog" Harrell. If the Notorious B.I.G. was the King of Rap, then his female protege Lil' Kim is without doubt the Queen. After postponing the release date of her album for a year, the Queen Bee finally deliveredher long awaited sophomore album THE NOTORIOUS K.I.M. As with her debut HARDCORE, Kim sticks to the original bad girl formula that made her famous. With songs like "Suck My D**k" and "Aunt Dot," Lil' Kim kicks rhymes that make the hardest male MCs seem soft. However, she shows her feminine side on the Biggie tribute "Hold On," featuring Mary J. Blige and the sentimental vocals of an almost-in-tears Kimberly Jones. Guest appearances from Redman, Sisqo, Puff Daddy, Junior Mafia, and Grace Jones all make for a well-rounded CD. SKU: 1036467

Undertow
Tool: Danny Carey, Paul D'Amour, Maynard James, Adam Jones. Additional personnel: Henry Rollins (vocals). Recorded at Grand Master Studios, Hollywood, California. UNDERTOW is an example of nimble heavy metal in the angtsy/artsy tradition of Jane's Addiction. Tool favors medium tempos, which gives several of the group's songs a modern-day Black Sabbath feel, but fortunately lead singer Maynard James mostly steers clear of the usual quasi-operatic yowling favored by most metal frontmen--he's a remarkably expressive singer in a genre not usually so noted. As for the band's world-view, it's pretty much summed up in the unsentimentally named "Prison Sex": "Dounto others, what has been done to you." SKU: 1007829

Tiny Music...Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop
Full title: Tiny Music...Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop. Stone Temple Pilots: Scott Weiland (vocals, percussion); Robert DeLeo (guitar, electric harpsichord, vibraphone, bass, 6-string bass, handclaps, percussion, background vocals); Dean DeLeo (guitar, bass, 6-string bass, handclaps); Eric Kretz (Fender Rhodes piano, drums, handclaps, percussion). Additional personnel: Dave Ferguson (trumpet); Brendan O'Brien (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Clavinet, tambourine, handclaps, percussion); Steve Stewart, Gena Rankin (handclaps). Engineers: Nick DiDia, Chris Goss, Tracy Chisholm. Recorded at Westerly Ranch, Santa Ynez, California and Hollywood Sound, Los Angeles, California. "Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. On their third album, Stone Temple Pilots distance themselves from the grunge movement that was their springboard into the multi-platinum neighborhood. From the onset, TINY MUSIC... finds the group dabbling with their sound; "Press Play," a one-minute instrumental rides a slinky funk groove, juiced along by returning producer Brendan O'Brien on Fender Rhodes piano. From here, the DeLeo brothers and drummer Eric Kretz show a willingness to musically experiment with Beatlesque songs ("Lady Picture Show"), a Leon Redbone-like instrumental replete with slack-guitar phrasings ("Daisy") and a loung-ey track that lulls the listener with liberal applications of vibraphone and harpsichord("And So I Know"). Lyrically, Weiland continues to enigmatically allude to matters of personal importance--whether it be the price of fame in "Adhesive," featuring a muted trumpet solo by Dave Ferguson that conveys the song's somber tone, or the shallowness of a fictional girlfriend in "Art School Girl." As a whole, TINY LIGHTS... gives Stone Temple Pilots the chance to shrug off the grunge mantle that many others continue to cling to. SKU: 1002825
