Now In A Minute
Personnel: Donna Lewis (vocals, piano, keyboards, programming, music box); Gerry Leonard (acoustic, classical, electric & E-bow guitars, guitar); Bill Dillon (guitar); Eric Friedlander (cello); Cosmic Lounge Brass Ensemble (horns); Mark Hutchins (keyboards, percussion); Harvey Jones (Mellotron, Prophet, keyboards, synthesizer); Kevin Killen (keyboards); Tony Franklin (bass); Jimmy Bralower, Dean Sharp (drum programming); Pete Keppler (music box). Engineers: Kevin Killen (tracks 1-9); Ian Rae (track 10); King Britt, John Wicks (track 11). Recorded at Shelter Island Studios, New York, New York; Third Story Recording, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and live at BBC Pebble Mill, England. Donna Lewis is a vocalist/keyboardist/composer who combines electronics and modern production techniques with a'60s Goffin/King compositional sensibility. Her musical vision arrives fully-realized on her debut album, on which she uses soft, textural layers of keyboards to clothe her direct, unpretentious lyrics. Most of Lewis' songs focus on that perennial pop subject, love and the lack thereof. They are delivered in a small, fragile voice that simultaneously recalls the self-possessed eccentricity of Tori Amos and the wispy waifishness of Jewel. While Lewis composes much more straightforward pop confections than either Amos or Jewel, she is capable of creating an airy, atmospheric landscape with synthesizers and drum machines, and it provides a perfect foil for her old-style songwriting. NOW IN A MINUTE maintains this approach throughout; Lewis is a musician who knows exactly what she wants to do and has the ability to traverse an album's worth of tunes without once breaking stride. Live At The Greek [ECD]
Disc 1 of this 2-CD set is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Jimmy Page (guitar); Chris Robinson (vocals); Rich Robinson (guitar, background vocals); Audley Freed (guitar); Ed Harsch (keyboards); Sven Pipien (bass); Steve Gorman (drums). Recorded live at the Greek Theatre, Los Angeles, California. Following a successful collaboration at a 1999 London benefit show, it made perfect sense for Jimmy Page to invite the Black Crowes to be his back-up band for a mini-tour later that year. Recorded during a pair of sold-out shows at Los Angeles' GreekTheatre, these sets are dominated by Led Zeppelin tunes, along with a mix of classic blues nuggets and covers of Fleetwood Mac and Page's first group, The Yardbirds. (Due to contractual obligations, no Crowes songs are included here). Chris Robinson's soulful singing ably fills in for Robert Plant's caterwaul, particularly with the sinister "In My Time of Dying" and the bluesy drawl of Willie Dixon's "You Shook Me." Guitarists Rich Robinson and Audley Freed provide stellar sounding layers of depth behind Page's playing, whether on the chiming "Hey Hey What Can I Do," or the hard-hitting swagger of "Nobody's Fault But Mine." From the non-Zeppelin material, the Crowes and Page soar on covers of the B.B. King shuffle "Woke Up This Morning" and the Chicago blues stomp of Jimmy Rogers' "Sloppy Drunk." SKU: 1038220

TLC3D [PA]
This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a browser. TLC: Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Chilli, Lisa Left Eye Lopes (vocals). Additional personnel: Rodney Jerkins (vocals, samples); Tron Austin (vocals); Babyface (acoustic & electric guitars, keyboards, programming); Raphael Saadiq (guitar, bass); Tomi Martin, Danny O'Donough, Tony Reyes (guitar); Colin Wolfe, Shorty B (bass); Sigurdur Birkis, Tom Knight (drums); Riprock, Alex G., Organized Noize (programming); DJ Ruckus (scratches); Debra Killings, Missy Elliot, Chase Rollison, Lester Finnel, Bill Diggins, MarkPitts, Marde Johnson, Shawn Beasley (background vocals); Eddie Hustle. Producers: Lisa "Left Eye Lopes", Chilli, Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Bill Diggins. "Girl Talk" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Considering TLC's ubiquity, 3D stands surprisingly as only the fourth album in 11 years for the trio consisting of T-Boz, Left Eye and Chilli, and tragedy marks it as the last. After eternally troubled but ever-talented Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes perished in a car crash in Honduras in April 2002, the remaining members of TLC decided to finish work on the record they started. Released seven months later, 3D continues along the basic thread of their earlier albums. While recalling some of the over-the-top quirkiness of their debut, the threesome stirs in plenty of contemporary hip-hop flavor, creating an invitingly jagged sound, particularly on the Southern-tinged "Dirty Dirty." Infectious first single "Girl Talk," a song both funny and sharply on point, could be seen as a companion piece to and a combination of "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg" and "No Scrubs," as the three rag on men who get lazy when it comes to fulfilling the obligations of love. The mellow twist of the alluring ballad "Turntable" stands with the group's best ballads, while "Over Me," offers up the defiant side. 3D is a solid coda to one of the better R&B and pop acts of the 1990s. Been A Long Time
Double Trouble: Tommy Shannon (acoustic guitar, bass); Chris Layton (piano, drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: Doyle Bramhall II, Dr. John, Lou And Barton, Eric Johnson, Susan Tedeschi, Jonny Lang, Malford Milligan, Willie Nelson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Charlie Sexton, Jimmie Vaughan, Reese Wynans, Gordie Johnson, Van Wilks, Denny Freeman, Mark Kazanoff, Bill Willis, Riley Osbourn, Tommy Taylor, Derek O'Brien. Producers include: Charlie Sexton, Doyle Bramhall II, Stephen Bruton, Jimmie Vaughan, Double Trouble. Engineers include: Andy Taub, Stuart Sullivan, Richard Mullens. You have to give the late guitar legend Stevie Ray Vaughan's rhythm section credit for perseverance. Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding, the rhythm section of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, never took it upon themselves to continue as a recording entity after their leader's passing. Of course, Double Trouble is buoyed on BEEN A LONG TIME by a host of famous friends who offer impassioned performances to occupy Vaughan's vacated frontman spot. Bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton are as rock-solid here as they ever were backing up theirerstwhile leader. They don't spend much time looking back, either. BEEN A LONG TIME isn't really a blues album--rather, it's a bluesy rock album with a decidedly contemporary edge that owes little to Vaughan's sound. Jonny Lang, Susan Tedeschi, Charlie Sexton, and many others lend their voices and guitars to BEEN A LONG TIME, but Double Trouble can take the credit for putting (and keeping) the whole thing together. Fragile [Remastered]
Yes: Steve Howe (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Chris Squire (vocals, bass); Jon Anderson (vocals); Rick Wakeman (acoustic & electric pianos, organ, harpsichord, Mellotron, synthesizer); BillBruford (drums, percussion). Recorded at Advision Studios, London, England in September 1971. Originally released on Atlantic (19132). Digitally remastered by Joe Gastwirt (Ocean View Digital). This marked the period when Yes left the planet and took up residence on one of artist Roger Dean's far-off lands. The musical transition is apparent with longer instrumental passages taking over from the three-minute song format. Lengthy pieces open and close the album, and both songs have become Yes chestnuts. "Heart Of The Sunrise" and "Roundabout" are strong tracks musically, with the latter winning out as being more accessible. Without detracting from Anderson, Howe, Bruford and Wakeman, Chris Squire's bass playing is superlative throughout. SKU: 1005328

Heart
Heart: Ann Wilson (vocals); Nancy Wilson (guitar, mandolin, vocals); Howard Leese (guitar, keyboards, mandolin, background vocals); Mark Andes (bass); Denny Carmassi (drums). Additional personnel: Frankie Sullivan (guitar); Holly Knight (keyboards); Johnny Colla, Lynn Wilson (background vocals). Recorded at The Record Plant, Los Angeles and The PlantStudios, Sausalito, California, between January and April 1985. The other Wilson sisters strode wilfully back into the international charts with their self-titled debut for Capitol Records, now seen as the first female AOR classic. Drawing on outside writers to help develop the project, they created an album of enormous musical wealth that charted internationally with a host of successful spin-off singles. With Ron Nevison's lush production and the Wilsons' soulful vocals, tracks such as "What About Love," "Never," and the yearning "These Dreams" were guaranteed sellers, while the band still rocked majestically for "If Looks Could Kill' and "Wolf," in particular. Personnel includes: David Coverdale (vocals); Micky Moody (electric & slide guitars); John Sykes, Mel Galley (guitar, background vocals); Dan Huff, Steve Vai (guitar); David Rosenthal, Don Airey, Bill Cuomo, Jon Lord, Claude Gaudette, Alan Pasqua (keyboards); Neil Murray, Rudy Sarzo (bass); Aynsley Dunbar, Denny Carmassi, Cozy Powell, Tommy Aldridge (drums); Tommy Funderburk, The Fabulosa Brothers, Richard Page, The Big 'Eads, Glenn Hughes (background vocals). Producers: Mike Stone, Keith Olsen, Martin Birch, Mike Clink. Includes liner notes by Sal Manna. Over the course of three albums (1984's SLIDE IT IN, 1987's WHITESNAKE, and 1989's SLIP OF THE TONGUE), Whitesnake became one of the '80s' biggest hard rock bands. The best tracks of the aforementioned albums serve as thebasis for 1994's 14-track GREATEST HITS collection. Despite its many incarnations throughout the decade (macho singer David Coverdale being the only constant member), Whitesnake kept its game plan pretty constant--Led Zep-like rockers were followed by big power ballads, spelling massive chart success. Standouts here include the heavies "Still of the Night," "Love Ain't No Stranger," "Slow An' Easy," and "Fool For Your Loving," the softer "Is This Love," and tracks such as "Here I Go Again" that lie somewhere in the middle. Includes the single 'Living The Dream'. SKU: 6590749

Additional personnel: Leon Russell (vocals); Eldon Shamblin (spoken vocals, electric guitar); Elvis Ripley (guitar, piano); Scotty Moore, James Burton (electric guitar); Bonnie Raitt (slide guitar); Fats Kaplin (steel guitar, fiddle); Curley Lewis (fiddle); D.J. Fontana (drums). Principally recorded at The Church Studio, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Three years after their second album, the Tractors finally return with FARMERS IN A CHANGING WORLD. The Tractors' music combines country, rock, boogie-woogie, shuffle and New Orleans groove, serving it up via singer Steve Ripley's distinctive growl. Like their previous albums, FARMERS is a raw, loose-limbed collection of songs custom-made for grooving on the dance floor. Quite a few of the tracks recall the band's super-cool 1994 debut single "Baby LikesTo Rock It," including "Poor Boy Shuffle" and "Linda Lou" (both with Bonnie Raitt on slide guitar) and "Foot Stomp Stompin'" (with Leon Russell). A standout is "The Elvis Thing," a song explaining how Elvis changed America, featuring the King's real-life band--Scotty Moore, D.J. Fontana and James Burton. The song that best sums up the Tractors' view of the world, though, is a hidden track buried three minutes after the end of the "last" song on the CD. It's a cool little number about the Heaven's Gate Cult called "The Hale-Bopp Boogie." For the Tractors, nothing is so serious that you can't dance to it. SKU: 1006102

Dirty Vegas
Dirty Vegas: Paul Harris, Ben Harris, Steve Smith. "Dirty Vegas" won the 2003 GrammyAward for Best Dance Recording. DIRTY VEGAS was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award For Best Recording Package. For those who remember the days when electronica was known simply as disco, this collection of instrumental and vocal tracks should bring back some happy memories. If you think you've never heard Dirty Vegas before, they supply the music to the car commercial where the trendy girl is being driven around town (either looking for the next hot club or a parking space) doing various robotic movements to a spare electronic backing track. The rest of the set sounds similar; midtempo beats, infectious tunes, and some passably hip-hop-like vocals courtesy of this British trio's otherwise decidedly pop-oriented singer Steve Smith. Undeniably commercial, Dirty Vegas' simple, uncluttered sound harks back to the early '90s, when electronica was in its infancy, from the motoring "The Brazilian" to the hypnotic "Ghosts," while the full version of the car-commercial song, a.k.a. "Days Go By," is pure manna from dancefloor heaven. Dirty Vegas provides electronica for all seasons, suitable for easy listening or grooving--proving that those ad agencies don't get the big bucks for nothing. SKU: 1076391

Live In Texas (+DVD) [Digipak]
Includesbonus DVD. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Linkin Park: Mike Shinoda (vocals, emcee, samples); Chester Bennington (vocals); Brad Delson (guitar, background vocals); Phoenix (bass, background vocals); Rob Bourdon (drums, background vocals); Joseph Hahn (turntables, samples, background vocals). Recorded live at Reliant Stadium, Houston, Texas on August 2, 2003 and at Texas Stadium, Irving, Texas on August 3, 2003. Linkin Park's third album (not including the remix project, REANIMATION) is their first live effort, recorded in 2003 on their Metallica and Limp Bizkit-accompanied Summer Sanitarium tour. Showcasing material from their previous two albums, HYBRID THEORY and METEORA, it works well both as a semi-greatest hits set and a useful stopgap for diehard fans. LIVE IN TEXAS finds Linkin Park tighter and more powerful than ever on songs such as the incendiary "One Step Closer" and the pop-metal hybrid "Numb." The band's trademark amalgam of metal, pop, and hip-hop translates well to this live setting, with Mike Shinoda's growling vocals contrasting even more sharply with Chester Bennington's rather angelic pipes. Linkin Park's melodic, roiling choruses, with their frequent angular pauses before jumping straight back into the aural mosh pit, are ideally suited to the wide-open concert venue featured here. While it's no substitute for an actual in-person Linkin Park live experience, the album is both a useful memento of a moment in time and a fine testament to the band's ability to walk a musical tightrope without a studio-enhanced net. Plastic Letters [Remastered]
Blondie: Deborah Harry (vocals); Chris Stein (guitar, bass, vibraphone); James Destri (piano, organ, synthesizer, background vocals); Frank Infante (bass, background vocals); Clement Burke (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Dale Powers (background vocals). Producer: Richard Gottehrer. Reissue producer: Kevin Flaherty. Recorded at Plaza Sound Studio, New York, New York in June & July 1977. Originally released on Chrysalis (1166). Includes liner notes by Richard Gottehrer. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Considered by many to be Blondie's best, their second album catches the group poised on the brink of global superstardom. PLASTIC LETTERS' first single, a gender-switched cover of the '60s pop hit "Denise" by Randy and the Rainbows, was amassive British hit which went far towards dispelling the band's second-tier status on the New York punk scene. The rest of the disc improves immensely on their self-titled debut, with sharper songwriting and better production. Jimmy Destri's Farfisa organ is still the band's main musical focal point, but his playing has evolved, along with the melodies, beyond the simple '60s pastiches of the debut. "Youth Nabbed as Sniper" and "Contact in Red Square" continue the band's fascination with trash culture, but the glorious "I'm Always Touched by Your Presence Dear," written by departed bassist Gary Valentine, is a genuinely heartfelt, if ironic, love song.
