Just Another Band From LA
Full performer name: Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention. The Mothers OfInvention: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Ian Underwood (vocals, woodwinds, keyboards); Jim Pons (vocals, bass); Mark Volman, Howard Kaylan (vocals); Don Preston (keyboards, Mini-Moog); Aynsley Dunbar (drums). Recorded live at Pauley Pavilion, UCLA, Los Angeles, California on August 7, 1971. Digitally remastered by Bob Stone. Yet another live document of the early-'70s Mothers incarnation that included vocalists Flo and Eddie of the Turtles (FILLMORE EAST 1971 covers the same time period). JUST ANOTHER BAND is probably the closest Zappa and company ever came to putting music second to comedy. Naturally, the musicianship is stellar as usual, but extended instrumental passages are virtually non-existent, replaced by Flo and Eddie's harmonies, delivering some howlingly funny lyrics. The centerpiece is the (originally) side-long "Billy the Mountain," a comic conceptual tour de force. Over a complex, suite-like form that incorporates multiple time and dynamic changes, the Mothers tell the surreal story of a Mountain named Billy who walked like a man, and his conflicts with those pesky little humans. "Magdalena" offers a parody of Four Tops-style romantic devotional tunes, while "Call Any Vegetable" ranks among the finest food songs of the rock era (a surprisingly impressive distinction). Bedtime Stories
Personnel: Madonna (vocals); Tommy Martin (guitar); Colin Wolfe (bass); Marius DeVries (programming); Niki Harris (background vocals); Dallas Austin, Rick Sheppard. Producers: Nellee Hooper, Madonna, Dallas Austin, Dave "Jam" Hall, Babyface. For Madonna, pop music is the canvas of her greatest aspiration. While some critics might be ready to write her off, BEDTIME STORIES reasserts Madonna's claim to the R&B/dance floor turf she ceded to others as her own productions became elaborately self-conscious. And where performers like R. Kelly filled the breach with risque, sexually explicit fare, BEDTIME STORIES marks Madonna's return to a more stylized, elegant form of R&B. Not that Madonna has gotten herself to a nunnery, as the soft-focus ooohing and aaahing of "Inside Of Me" demonstrates, but the overall approach on BEDTIME STORIES is less carnal, more romantic (like the difference between the Supremes and Salt N' Pepa). But in collaborating with innovative producers such as Babyface and Dallas Austin, Madonna has again positioned herself on the cutting edge of modern R&B (compare the layered, collage-like production of "I'd Rather Be Your Lover" and "Human Nature" to Dallas Austin's innovative collaborations with Joi on THE PENDULUM VIBE, or, for that matter, with the eerie "Bad Baby" from P.I.L.'s METALBOX). The spooky "Sanctuary" samples Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" to create an African backdrop for Madonna's tale of earthy devotion, while the Icelandic diva Bjork's elliptical "Bedtime Stories" propels Madonna way beyond the limits of language on this crafty, near Eastern textured arrangement. The Oriental-flavored R&B of "Take A Bow" provides a confessional epilogue for this delicately-mannered program. SKU: 1006268

Don't Stop The Carnival
Personnel: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Donald Byrd (trumpet, flugelhorn); Mark Soskin (piano); Aurell Ray (guitar); Jerome Harris (bass); Mark Williams (drums). Recorded at the Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, California between April 13 & 15, 1978. Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. Recorded during a four-night stand at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco on April, 1978, and backed by a quartet featuring the great Tony Williams (playing at his best and least flashy on "Silver City") on drums, Rollins runs through three originals (including the excellent calypso-styled title track) and a rendition of "Autumn Nocturne" featuringa remarkable extended introductory solo which then continues throughout the song proper. Halfway through this double-album-length set, Rollins introduces his "very special friend" Donald Byrd, whose trumpet and flugelhorn share center stage with Rollins' tenor sax. At the time, Byrd had been primarily writing and producing slick soul-jazz-pop for his proteges the Blackbyrds, but he'd lost none of his prodigious chops, shown to best effect on his own "A Child's Prayer" and on Kevin Toney's "Non-Cents," where all three stars have extended solo workouts. One, Two, Freak
The music of the Pork posse just keeps getting more and more wonderfully pungent. The discs come out quicker than links from a sausage factory, but when the inspectors maintain such a high level of quality control, as on this Baby Mammoth biggie, you're left hungry for more. The Babes are more prone to dabble in synthetics than some of their label cohorts (Bullitnuts, Akotcha), and their wooly brand of funk shows they're not just babes fresh from the woods. "Skidding on All Fours" must be the perfect merger of Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, and drum-and-bass-lite--breezy synth-pop with the effervescence of Dom Perignon on a wedding night spent in a starship. "Zen Butchers," all skipping hi-hats, curling Moogs, and deep-space metallic strings, lifts you up and just takes you away, surfing on a dream. Can there be such a thing as "space funk?"If so, Baby Mammoth make your space-funk dreams come true. SKU: 4126457

Aftermath [SACD] [Remastered]
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, percussion); Keith Richards (vocals, guitar); Brian Jones (guitar, dulcimer, sitar, marimba, bells); Bill Wyman (marimba, bass, bells); Charlie Watts (marimba, drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Jack Nitzsche, Ian Stewart (piano, organ, harpsichord). Recorded at RCA Studios, Hollywood, California. Includes liner notes by Dave Hassinger. The Rolling Stones' first set of all-original material--a full two years after the Beatles had passed that milestone with A HARD DAY'S NIGHT--1966's AFTERMATH is arguably the Stones' first truly great album, as opposed to a selection of killer singles padded out with some forgettable filler. Not that the singles aren't killers; "Paint It Black" and "Under My Thumb" are two of the Stones' most inventive chart successes, their sitar and marimba touches showing that at least through 1966, the Stones were justas likely as the Beatles, Kinks or Who to release a single that sounded like nothing else on the radio. Of the album tracks, "Lady Jane" and "Stupid Girl" are standouts, the former another of the boys' Elizabethan oddities and the latter a stomping, snotty garage rocker. Even better, though, are formal experiments like "I Am Waiting," a spooky acoustic tune that sounds like the boys had been listening to George Harrison's Indian excursions. Several of the more blues-based tracks press the five-minute barrier, culminating in the nearly 12-minute blues-rock rave-up "Goin' Home," one of the few extended jams that's actually worth the extra minutes. Dark Magus [SACD]
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet, organ); Dave Liebman (soprano & tenor saxophones, flute); Azar Lawrence (tenor saxophone); Reggie Lucas, Pete Cosey, Dominique Gaumont (guitar); Michael Henderson (electric bass); Al Foster (drums); Mtume (percussion). Recorded at Carnegie Hall, New York, New York on March 3, 1974. Includes liner notes by Dave Liebman. All tracks have been digitally remastered. In the context of Miles Davis' early '70s electric experimentation, DARK MAGUS seems like the final overload. It is a wall of screaming sound; a descent into a sonic abyss from which there can be no escape. The band is a polyphony of rhythm, three banshee-like electric guitars, two saxophones trying to make some harmonic sense of this post-modern revival meeting, and one headless-horseman of a trumpet player guiding the tempest. The four pieces performed at this Carnegie Hall concert bear only a passing resemblance to the give-and-take playfulness established on IN A SILENT WAY, but the textures have multiplied. The saxophones are perchedin free-jazz territory, Al Foster's drums are an unstoppable ball of energy, and Mtume's percussion suggests King Tubby's experiments with every phrase. When he wasn't stretching his trumpet lines past every conceivable breaking point, Miles would summon dark storm clouds on an electric organ. The voodoo was definitely in the house, and the weak of heart were probably carried out on stretchers. SKU: 1070794

Masterpiece Theater
En Vogue: Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron, Maxine Jones (vocals). Additional personnel: Kamil Marzette, Bobby McFerren (vocals); Mo Benjamin (various instruments, organ); Dave Meezy (variousinstruments); James Earley, Dwayne Wiggins, Marlon McClain (guitar); Michael J. Mani (piano, keyboards, programming); Denzil Foster, Thomas McElroy, Mark Lomax (keyboards, programming); Sundra Manning (keyboards); Jaime Brewer (bass); Sauce (programming). Eklypse: Michelle Woods, Robert Page, Tony Woods (vocals). Principally recorded at FM Studios, Emeryville, California. On this follow-up to 1997's EV3 and its panoply of producers that included schlockmeister David Foster and balladeer Babyface, En Vogue reunites with the acclaimed duo of Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy. For its fourth studio album, the trio raises the bar of contemporary R&B by integrating unpredictable classical influences and Lambert, Hendricks & Ross harmonizing into its brand of uplifting soul. The vagaries of romance and relationships are the meat of this sumptuous aural feast, and vocal rounds and snappy arrangements are the driving force behind crackling numbers like "Riddle," and "No No No (Can't Come Back)." Elsewhere En Vogue bridges the gaping chasm between the classical and hip-hop worlds by turning to Bizet's Carmen and a rap from Sol Eklypse for inspiration on the modern urban love tale, "Those Dogs." MASTERPIECE THEATER's centerpiece is the impressive, uncredited "Love Suite," which traces the cycle of a relationship through infatuation, involvement and infidelity. Throughout this piece, Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron and Maxine Jones perform elaborate vocal gymnastics, cleverly invoking shades of Tchaikovsky ("Love You Crazy"), Beethoven ("Sad But True"), and Gilbert & Sullivan ("Love Won't Take Me Out"). Super Session [Remastered]
Full performer name: Mike Bloomfield/Al Kooper/Steve Stills. Personnel: Mike Bloomfield (electric guitar); Al Kooper (vocals, 12-string & electric guitars, piano, organ, ondioline); Steve Stills (electric guitar); Barry Goldberg (electric piano); Harvey Brooks (bass); Eddie Hoh (drums). Includes liner notes by Al Kooper, Michael Thomas. A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later preciselybecause of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune"). All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth. SKU: 1082723

Time [Remastered]
Electric Light Orchestra: Jeff Lynne (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, synthesizer); Richard Tandy (guitar, piano, synthesizer); Kelly Groucett (bass, background vocals); Bev Bevans (drums, percussion). Producer: Jeff Lynne. Reissue producers: Jeff Lynne, Al Quaglieri. Recorded at Musicland Studios, Munich, Germany. Includes liner notes by Jeff Lynne. Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). The Electric Light Orchestra was in a precarious position by 1981. Not only was Jeff Lynne's brand of immaculately produced Beatlesque pop out of critical fashion in those new-wave days, there was a new brand of video-friendly bubblegum on the rise that made such classic radio hits as "Sweet Talkin' Woman" sound passe. The band's heavily hyped participation in the box-office flop XANADU, including the title duet with star Olivia Newton-John, hadn't helped. Typically, though, 1981's TIME finds Lynne and company ignoring trends and simply doing what they do best: pristine, endlessly-multitracked, ultra-melodic pop. There's a theme of sorts running through the record, a meditation on sci-fi apocalypse that runs through songs like "Yours Truly, 2095" and "From the End of the World." The concept is easy enoughto ignore, as the real focus, as always, is on Lynne's immense melodic and production skills. TIME is an underrated gem. SKU: 1061071

Number Of The Beast, The [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The Enhanced portion includes music videos for "Run To The Hills" and "Number Of The Beast." Iron Maiden: Bruce Dickinson (vocals); Dave Murray, Adrian Smith (guitar); Steve Harris (bass); Clive Burr (drums). Engineers: Martin "Farmer" Birch, Nigel "It Wasn't Working Yesterday" Hewitt-Green. Recorded at Battery Studios, London, England. Digitally remastered by Simon Heyworth (Chop 'Em Out). 1982's THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST remains one of heavy metal's all-time classics. Although theBritish quintet was in the midst of enjoying its first taste of global success, original singer Paul Di'Anno abruptly quit in 1981. Though stunned, the young band wisely agreed to soldier on, making ex-Samson singer Bruce Dickinson their new frontman. Nicknamed "The Air Raid Siren," Dickinson's voice was to become one of the band's most prominent signature characteristics. It also didn't hurt that the band had composed some of its best songs ever, such as the haunting title song, and its first U.K. Top-10 single, "Run to the Hills." Other highlights include the sinister "Children of the Damned," the melodic "The Prisoner," and the album-closing epic "Hallowed Be Thy Name." SKU: 1042597

Idlewild
Through a sea of changes they moved, from sparse indie folk to jazz, and with this album, they slotted into the classy pop niche. Very much a cosy 80s album for those that had weathered the new wave of the late 70s, EBTG still have the Habitat/Ikea image in their front-room. This is unnecessary carping because the songs are quite excellent, from the romantic innocence of "These Early Days" to the romantic experience of "I Always Was Your Girl." Thorn's voice is at last sounding fully in command and thechoice of the late Danny Whitten's "I Don't Want To Talk About It" is inspired. SKU: 5024424

Paul Simon (Remastered And Expanded)
Full title: Paul Simon (1st LP) (Expanded & Remasterd). Personnel: Paul Simon (vocals, guitar); David Spinoza, Huks Brown, Wallace Wilson, Stefan Grossman (guitar); Jerry Hahn (electric guitar); Stephane Grappelli (violin); Los Incas (charango, flutes, percussion); John Schroer, Fred Lipsius, Steven Turre (horns); Charlie McCoy (bass harmonica); Neville Hinds (organ); Larry Nechtel (piano, harmonium, organ); Mike Manieri (vibraphone); Ron Carter, Jackie Jackson, Russel George, Joe Osborn(bass); Hal Blaine, Winston Grennan, Victor Montanez (drums); Airto Moriera, Denzil Lang (percussion); Cissy Houston, Renelle Stafford, Dierdre Tuck, Von Eva Sims (background vocals). Recorded at Dynamic Sounds Studios in Kingston, Jamaica; C.B.E. Studios in Paris; and Western Studios in Los Angeles. Personnel: Paul Simon (vocals, guitar); David Spinozza, Stefan Grossman, Wallace "Red Rat" Wilson, Huks Brown (guitar); Jerry Hahn (electric guitar); Los Incas (charango, flute, percussion); Stephane Grappelli (violin); Charlie McCoy (harmonica); Fred Lipsius, John Schroer, Steven Turre (horns); Larry Nechtel (piano, harmonium, organ); Neville Hinds (organ); Mike Manieri (vibraphone); Jackie Jackson, Ron Carter, Russell George, Joe Osborn (bass guitar); Hal Blaine, Victor Montanez, Winston Grennan (drums); Denzil Lang, Airto Moreira (percussion); Cissy Houston, Renelle Stafford, Dierdre Tuck, Von Eva Sims (background vocals). Recording information: Dynamic Sound Studio, Kingston, Jamaica; C.B.E. Studios, Paris, France; Western Studios, Los Angeles, California. Upon the realization that 50 percent meant "half," Paul Simon terminated his wildly successful partnership with Art Garfunkel. Anyone who was paying attention to the quality of the writing on those Simon & Garfunkel albums shouldn't have been surprised by Simon's rapid emergence as a solo artist of the first order. His self-titled solo debut is a vibrant, eclectic affair that expands on the artistic developments of his former work while exploring new musical horizons. The elliptical "Mother and Child Reunion" is surely one of the first American pop flirtations with Jamaican music. "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" is similarly groundbreaking for its time in its use of Latin rhythms (a move Simon would eventually repeat on "Late in the Evening"). These cultural excursions foreshadow the road Simon would take decades later on GRACELAND. There are also some good old neurotic singer-songwriter tunes, like the sardonic "Run That Body Down," which stands up with the best work of Randy Newman, whose approach it recalls. SKU: 6564897

+3
Personnel: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone, chimes); Tommy Flanagan, Stephen Scott (piano); Bob Cranshaw (electric bass); Jack DeJohnette, Al Foster (drums). Recorded at Clinton Recording Studios, New York, New York on August 30, 1995 and October 7, 1995. Okay, if you were planning on grousing about "those records Sonny makes for Milestone," you can forget it. +3 is great. As the title suggests, Rollins is supported by two different trios, with the lion's share of the work going to the Tommy Flanagan/Bob Cranshaw/Al Foster ensemble (Steven Scott and Jack DeJohnette spell Flanagan and Foster for two cuts). It's mostly a program of standards, and the tenorist stretches out in a most luxurious way, with the tunes clocking in at between six and twelve minutes. Of his two compositional contributions, one is based loosely on the changes to "I Got Rhythm," the other is essentially a blues. What we have here, then, is Sonny Rollins playing great material with two trios of his peers, allowing himself to investigate and improvise to the fullest (and no synths or disco grooves either). If you miss the Caribbean stuff, you can always check out SUNNY DAYS, STARRY NIGHTS or the SILVER CITY compilation. Mr. Natural
The Bee Gees: Barry Gibb (vocals, guitar); Robin Gibb (vocals); Maurice Gibb (organ, Mellotron, bass, background vocals). Additional personnel: Alan Kendall (guitar); Phil Bodner (clarinet); Geoff Westley (piano, keyboards); Dennis Byron (drums, percussion). Engineers include: Gene Paul, Alan Lucas, Damion Lyon-Shaw. Recorded at IBC Studios & Command Studios, London, England and Atlantic Recording Studios, New York, New York. Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen(Sterling Sound, New York, New York). By 1974, the BEE GEES had moved on from the Beatles-influenced baroque pop of their early efforts, but they hadn't yet begun to explore the pop/R&B of MAIN COURSE (which would lead them into their successful disco phase). MR. NATURAL, then, is a transitional album for the Gibbs. As such, it features lots of lushly produced ballads that veer towards the MOR side of the fence (ironically, a style they would revisit in the '90s). The soft-rock production, full of strings and electric piano though it may be, doesn't cancel out the brilliant compositional prowess of the trio. The opening "Charade" is one of the band's most beautiful '70s tunes, setting the tone for the rest of the album, mellow, but far from ineffectual. SKU: 1045217

Come On Die Young
Mogwai: Barry Burns (guitar, flute, keyboards); Stuart Braithwaite (guitar, keyboards, percussion); John Cummings (guitar, piano); Dominic Aitchison (guitar, bass); Martin Bulloch (drums). Additional personnel: Dave Fridmann (various instruments); Richard Formby (lap steel); Luke Sutherland (violin); Wayne Myers (trombone). Recorded at Tarbox Road Studios, Cassadaga, New York and Cava, Glasgow, Scotland. Mogwai are top choice, triple-grade A, USDA prime slowcore. OK, they're from Scotland, but that's beside the point. Mostly an instrumental outfit, they strum and drone their way through the twelve tracks on "Come On Die Young" with a dark spirit that is beautiful, breathtaking and mysterious. Occasionally they'll sing a few bars (the lovely "Cody") and there's restrained use of keyboards and flute throughout. They're also not above descending into a cloud of white noise, as in "Ex-Cowboy." But what makes The 'Gwai a cut above is their deft use of melody. Although it may not be immediately apparent, there's always a singable phrase being performed somewhere. Was Pavement's Stephen Malkmus being ironic orinfatuated when he said, "Mogwai will be the best band of the 21st century?" You decide. SKU: 1000972

Fidelity Wars, The
Hefner: Darren Hayman (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Antony Harding (vocals, guitar, bass); John Morrison (guitar). Additional personnel includes: Gina Birch (vocals); Pete Astor (guitar); Jack Haytar (pedal steel guitar, violin, Theremin, stylophone). Recorded at Roundhouse Studios, London, England. How many disastrous love affairs can one boy have? If these songs are drawn from experience, it's a wonder Hefner's Darren Hayman hasn't checked into a monastery. THE FIDELITY WARS, the band's second full-length, catalogs the minutiae of disintegrating relationships-all petty jealousy, perfume, and cigarettes. With lyrics torn straight from Hayman's tear-stained diary, this could have been a futile exercise in self-pity. Thankfully, the boy has a knack for great tunes. What's the odd broken heart if you have songs as fine as "The Weight of the Stars" and the insanely catchy "I Took Her Love for Granted"? The band wraps Hayman's anguished vignettes in simple but effective arrangements. The basic guitar, bass, and drums are augmented by tasteful dashesof pedal steel, piano, and brass. There's even an incongruous bout of hip-hop scratching on "I Love Only You." Unlike so many of his contemporaries, Hayman is not afraid to let go and sing from the heart. This really sets Hefner apart from the pack and makes THE FIDELITY WARS a perfect choice for the angst-ridden teenager hiding within us all. SKU: 1039184

Expansion Team
Dilated Peoples: Evidence, Rakaa, DJ Babu. Additional personnel: Black Thought, Tha Liks, Phil Da Agony, J-Rocc, Rhettmatic, Melo-D (vocals). Producers include: DJ Premier, Da Beatminerz, The Alchemist, Joey Chavez, Juju. Engineers include: Kevin Bergman, Leo "Swift" Morris, Eddie Sancho. With its sophomore release the hip-hop trio Dilated Peoples expands its repertoire and adds guestssuch as East Coast-based DJ Premier and Public Enemy cohort Harry Allen. The socially conscious lyrics are a cut above the usual gangsta stylings, revealing a thoughtful worldview that, though it may be inspired by the ingestion of certain controlled substances, is none the less compelling for that. Though they originate from the hip-hop community, Dilated Peoples have a lot in common with '70s Jamaican stars such as Prince Far I and Max Romeo, in that it's not just the ganja talking here--these cuts are coherent and thought-provoking. They cover international finance in "Trade Money," international conflict in "War," and strife closer to home in the ghetto-flavored "Panic," never descending to the guns 'n' hoes imagery of some of their contemporaries, bringing dignity to the party, along with some dirty, funked-up beats. World Clique
Deee-Lite: Lady Miss Kier, Super DJ Dimitry, DJ Towa Towa. This full-length debut by the multicultural New York-based trio known as Deee-Lite was one of 1990's catchiest and most innovative releases. Deee-Lite wove '70s-era sampladelic loops (courtesy of Japanese mix master Jungle DJ Towa Tei and Russian Super DJ Dmitry Brill) over house and club-style beats, creating a funky, uniquely textured dance music. The bright vocals of American lead singer Lady Miss Kier and the band's outrageous cosmic/retro fashion sense add the perfect touch of good-vibe positivity to the proceedings. Dee-Lite is the techno era's irresistibly likable hippie lovechild. Booty moving anthems such as "Good Beat" and "Power of Love" are pulsing, computer-age disco, while "Try Me On, I'm Very You" and "Smile On" lock into righteous, feel-good '70s grooves a la Sly and his Family Stone. The highlight of the record, however, is the hit single"Groove Is In The Heart," an indescribable high that is guaranteed to move even the most lead-footed of listeners. Guest appearances by Bootsy Collins and A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip are added incentive to dive into WORLD CLIQUE. In all, this is one of the finest dance albums of the '90s. SKU: 1039095

Breathless
Personnel: Kenny G. (soprano saxophone, various instruments, drum programming); Peabo Bryson, Aaron Neville (vocals); Dean Parks, Michael Thompson (guitar); Walter Afanasieff (various instruments, keyboards, synthesizer bass, programming); Dan Shea (keyboards, synthesizer bass, programming); Vail Johnson (bass); John Robinson (drums); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Ren Klyce, Gary Cirimelli (programming); Phillip Ingram, Fred White, Lynn Davis, Rose Stone, Jim Glistrap, Vann Johnson, Portia Griffin, Pat Hawk, Jean McLean (background vocals). Producers: Kenny G, Walter Afanasieff, David Foster, Dan Shea. Engineers include: Kevin Becka, Dana Jon Chappelle, Humberto Gatica. Recorded at Studio G, Seattle, Washington; The Plant Studio, Sausalito, California; Village Recorders, Los Angeles, California. "Forever In Love" won the award for Instrumental Composition in the 36th Annual Grammy Awards. "Sentimental" was nominated for Best Pop Instrumental Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards. Kenny G is the quintessence of easy listening. His listener-friendly soprano sax is accessible to all--no hot jazz riffs, no wailing emotions, just easy-to-take, new age pop music. From the warm notes of the opening "The Joy Of Life" you know you are in a tranquil, meditative territory. Whether he is"Forever In Love" or walking "In The Rain," whether he is feeling "Sentimental" or all "Alone," this album is all about feelings. Kenny is an accomplished enough player to express those feelings through his distinctive, clear tones. The calm palette of his sound is made up of blissful blues and gentle greens, nothing brighter, nothing deeper; and it succeeds as such. Kenny's sax is up-front, with the subdued background instrumentation equally serene; this composer/arranger knows how to showcase his music. He never takes the focus off his saxophone, although he does share a duet with vocalist Peabo Bryson, on the slickly soulful "By The Time The Night Is Over." Pretend you're floating on a lake, lying on a beach, or swinging on a star; this is music that will transport you to that relaxing place. Sit back, relax, listen, and forget your worries. It is the reason for BREATHLESS' existence. SKU: 1015129

Moon Safari
Air: Nicolas Godin (spoken vocals, talk box, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, Wurlitzer, organ, Mini-Moog synthesizer, vocoder, synthesizer, glockenspiel, bass, tambourine, shaker, percussion, drum programming, sound effects, background vocals); Jean Benoit Dunckel (spoken vocals, strings, syrinx, piano, Fender Rhodes, Wurliitzer, organ, Melotron, clavinet, Mini-Moog synthesizer, synthesizers, glockenspiel, hand claps, sound effects, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: David Whitaker (conductor); Enfants Square Burcq (vocals); Beth Hirsch (spoken vocals); P. Woodcock (acoustic guitar, tuba); Eric Regert (organ); Marlon (drums); Stephane "Alf" Briat, Caroline L. (hand claps). Producers: Jean-Benoit Dunckel, Nicolas Godin. Engineers: Jean-Benoit Dunckel, Nicolas Godin, Stephane "Alf" Briat. Principally recorded at Around The Golf studio and Gang Studio, Paris, France. Their trans-Atlantic notoriety may have come amidst compilations of French house and electronic scenes, but Nicolas Godin and JB Dunckel are not just another pair of Gallic beat-miners. Like DJs and studio wizards, the duo known as Air does construct their records pastiche-style; but instead of unleashing dancefloor-friendly "tracks", they come up with mellow abstractions for retro-minded chill-out rooms, flaunting their analog instrumentation and love for make-out melodies every step of the way. MOON SAFARI, Air's full-length debut, is like a fuzzy, blissful daydream in which a glowing ambiance pervades over a crossroads of '60s French pop, '70s Philly soul and '80s Eurodisco. Rarely does the tempo reach mid, and when it does ("Kelly Watch The Stars" and "Le Voyage de Penelope"), it's on the strength of funky synth-pop grooves. Overall, their sounds are rarely less than kaleidoscopic, enveloping the listener in happy, high-IQ muzak. If it sounds somewhat disposable, it's because allgood pop should. It is the fact that one can't leave Air's aural confections behind that makes MOON SAFARI great. SKU: 1004799

Magic Touch (Mixed By Bally Sagoo)
Personnel includes: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (vocals). Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was the greatest qawwali singer of his generation, and extremely well versed in this devotional style of music that originated with 10th century renegade Sufi poets and musicians. However, Nusrat also recognized that music was an evolutionary art form. MAGIC TOUCH represents the singer's attempts to blend the music of his ancient homeland with modern technology. This album is a prime example of the legendary singer's fusion of the traditional and the modern, a classic meeting of East and West. Seeking to open up qawwali music to outsideinfluences, Nusrat enlisted Bally Sagoo, a renowned DJ, producer and remixer. The result is a highly experimental and innovative release, with Sagoo's electronic soundscapes providing the canvas for Nusrat's vocal portraits. Essentia |
