In Montreal
Personnel: Charlie Haden (acoustic bass); Egberto Gismonti (piano, guitar). Recorded at the Montreal Jazz Festival, Montreal, Canada on July 6, 1989. In 1989 the Montreal Jazz Festival presented Charlie Haden in a series of eight completely different concerts. A number of these have already appeared on CD as volumes in the MONTREAL TAPES series. This concert presented him in a series of duets with Brazil's Egberto Gismonti, who plays primarily guitar and also some piano. The bulk of the pieces are by Gismonti and have a folkish bearing, rich with the rhythmic and harmonic characteristics of the guitarist's homeland. Haden's "First Song"has been recast in numerous settings (among the most unforgettable is a version by Abbey Lincoln), and here again its simple beauty wields tremendous emotional power. As befits the tradition of the ECM label, this album is clean-sounding and warmly recorded, with every quiet note captured in perfect detail. The intimacy of the two musicians' interplay makes one forget that this was a performance before a large audience (who were roused to thunderous applause at the conclusion of each number). White Eyes [PA]
Personnel includes: Magic, Master P, Partners In Crime, Weebie, Tyron, Trouble, 6 Piece (rap vocals). Producers include: Magic, Presidential Campaign, Lil' Jon, Tha Eastside Boyz. Like his fellow dirty south rapper Petey Pablo, New Orleans MC Magic has found success with a hyper-thuggish brand of greasy-grooved hip-hop that relies on throat-shredding gruff vocalizing and rhymes containing more than a few doses of sly self-parody. Never one to shy away from going completely over-the-top, throughout WHITE EYES Magic revels in spinning tales of Caligula-worthy debauchery,J.P. Morgan-esque pursuit of material gain, and violence that would make Rambo hang up his ammo belts and run home to mommy. Naturally, there's also plenty of the usual boasting about who's the hardest, richest, and smartest, all set to typically slow and sassy Master P-style neo-G-Funk grooves. Interestingly, however, at the end of the album Magic seems to have a change of heart. "Forgive Us," is exactly what the title implies: a plea to God for leniency. In what must be one of the genre's most honest moments, Magic hopes that when the end comes, God will look down and see what many gangsta rap fans already suspect: that all the harsh words are nothing more than simple entertainment. Snowbound/The Lonely Hours
2 LPs on 1 CD. This CD comprises two albums from the early 1960s, featuring Sarah Vaughan in the days when she was packaged not as a jazz singer, but as a pop balladeer. Whatever genre she was placed in, however, one thing is clear: she has a voice that transcends both categorization and her musical surroundings. The two albums, "Snowbound" and "The Lonely Hours," feature two distinct styles of arranging. Don Costa's charts are graceful and atmospheric, with a steady predominance of smooth-sounding strings; the Vaughan vocals are just as velvety as the violins on great songssuch as "Glad To Be Unhappy." The splendid arranging talents of Benny Carter on the second album are swinging, and Vaughan is vocally more adventurous here, as evidenced on "I'll Never Be the Same." Sarah Vaughan's voice for all seasons and styles is featured to superior effect over the course of this collection. SKU: 1006315

Best Of The Centennial Edition, The
Full title: The Best Of The Duke Ellington Centennial Edition: The Complete RCA Victor Recordings 1927-1973. Personnel: Duke Ellington (piano, celeste); Ray Nance (vocals, trumpet, violin); Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Ivie Anderson, Claude Jones (vocals); Harry Carney (soprano, alto & baritone saxophones, clarinet); Jimmy Hamilton (alto & tenor saxophones, clarinet); Otto Hardwick (alto & baritone saxophones); Russell Procope, Johnny Hodges (alto saxophone, clarinet); Barney Bigard (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Ben Webster, Don Byas (tenor saxophone); Mercer Ellington, Cat Anderson, Cootie Williams (trumpet); Joe Nanton, Lawrence Brown (trombone); Juan Tizol (valve trombone); Billy Strayhorn (piano); Fred Guy (guitar, banjo); Jimmy Blanton, Wellman Braud (bass); Sonny Greer, Sam Woodyard (drums); The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. Compilation producers: Steven Lasker, Orrin Keepnews. Includes liner notes by Joshua Sherman. Digitally remastered by Dennis Ferrante. Duke Ellington was one of the greatest figures in jazz and American history. He was a great composer and bandleader (who wrote for the individual strengths of his soloists), and a fine, under-recognized pianist. Ellington recorded off and on for RCA-Victor from 1927 to the late '60s, and the Centennial Edition has it all. But for those who can't afford a hefty box set, this sampler will do nicely. Nearly all of the Duke's hits are here (including "Take the 'A' Train" and "Mood Indigo"), most of which have long ago become standards. The lesser-known gems arehere as well, like "Jack the Bear" and the exotic "Isfahan." The latter proves that while most of the survivors from the swing era ('30s/'40s) were content to peddle nostalgia (1966), Ellington was still composing thoughtful, intricate works. Swing, elegance, imagination, beauty, cool, hot--it's ALL here, from one of the greatest musical minds of the 20th century. SKU: 3102878

These Foolish Things
Personnel: Bryan Ferry (vocals, piano); John Porter (guitar, bass); Phil Manzanera (guitar); EddieJobson (violin, keyboards, synthesizer); Roger Ball (alto & baritone saxophones); Ruan O'Lochlainn (alto saxophone); Malcolm Duncan (tenor saxophone); Henry Lowther (trumpet); David Skinner (piano); Paul Thompson, John Punter (drums); Robbie Montgomery, Jessie Davis, The Angelettes (background vocals). Producers: Bryan Ferry, John Porter, John Punter. Recorded at Air Studios, London, England in June 1973. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Wildly controversial in its day, Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry's first solo album now seems more eccentric than groundbreaking; more one man's oddball take on an eclectic bunch of his favorite artists' songs than an ironic manifesto of a new pop order. Rock purists, of course, were outraged. How dare Ferry implicitly maintain the esthetic equivalence of Bob Dylan ("A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall," complete with gospel backup singers and thunderstorm effects), with teen angst queen Leslie Gore (an unabashedly camp version of her classic "It's My Party")? Although Bryan Ferry's mannered, tremulous vocals are better suited for his own romantically bruised lounge lizard songs, he obviously connects with these tunes on a personal level. THESE FOOLISH THINGS contains many instances, most notably on the title track and Smokey Robinson's "Tracks of My Tears," where Ferry transcends his vocal limitations and comes up with his own foppish, but still valid, version of the blues. Tyger
Tangerine Dream: Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, Paul Haslinger. Additional personnel: Jocelyn Bernadette Smith (vocals). Recorded at Dream Studios, Berlin, Germany and Eastgate Studios, Vienna, Austria in 1987. Includes liner notes by Paul Russell. Celebrated for their cerebral film scores and brooding instrumental albums, Germany's Tangerine Dream tried a new formula with 1987's TYGER, setting William Blake's poetry to music. Guest vocalist Jocelyn B. Smith trades her usual R&B style for a more studied approach. Sounding at times like Nina Simone, Smith's rich alto injects new life and passion into the words ofthe 18th century British poet. TYGER's melodies are vintage Tangerine Dream--lush and expansive themes that pick up speed and morph into frenetic dance pop. As always, drum machines and synths abound. The tension between ethereal soundscapes and frenzied abandon creates a hypnotic effect, and perfectly suits Blake's vision of humanity's eternal dance between sin and salvation. Three original instrumental tracks expand on the Blake songs and round out the album. SKU: 1083875

Sun Came, A [Remastered]
Includes three previously unreleased bonus tracks and new artwork. Personnel: Sufjan Stevens (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, banjo, sitar, flute, recorder, oboe, alto saxophone, piano, synthesizer, xylophone, bass guitar, percussion); Shannon Stephens, Ghadeer Yaser (vocals); Marzuki Stevens (guitar, tenor saxophone, percussion); Matt Morgan (guitar); Jesse Koskey (drums). Recording information: Holland, Michigan (1998); Brooklyn, New York (2001). Singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Sufjan Stevens's 1999 debut album gets bumped up from lo- to mid-fi here, thanks to a 2004 remastering by the Asthmatic Kitty label. For the Sufjan novice, this is a fine place to start, as it features a wide arrays of sounds, including post-prog wooden flutes and recorders, flanged vocals, fuzz guitar, and even quirky sing-alongs (a trademark of Stevens's future frequent collaborator Brother Danielson). Gentle piano and acoustic guitar refrains take the sting out of this all-over-the-music-map travelling, soothing the soul on "Dumb I Sound," "Wordsworth's Ridge," and the title track. "A Loverless Bed (W/out Remission)" is so sweet that its wah-wah guitar would sound at home on Tommy James & the Shondells' "Crimson & Clover." "Kill" is softer than an Elliott Smith tune, and Stevens earns his banjo wings on "Happy Birthday." Goofball hijinks like "Super Sexy Woman," "Jason," and the dissonant "Satan's Saxophones" recall early Beck, and help make this sprawling epic of an album sound deceptively cheeky at first, but rest assured, a wondrous and emotionally moving world reveals itself on repeat listens. For fans, the blend of beauty and noise on bonus track "Joy. Joy. Joy." alone is worth making the upgrade. SKU: 6566387

One Step Beyond [ECD] [Remastered]
Madness were at the forefront of the UK ska revival at the end of the 70s, very much a regional thing. Madness were very London and they soon shed the two-tone image and became one of the most consistent UK chart groups of the following decade. This debut shows both sides, from the excellent blue beat signature tune "Chipmunks Are Go!" and a first class cover of Prince Buster's "One Step Beyond" to their own masterful pop, and in particular thehighly polished "My Girl". What Lindisfarne are to Newcastle, and Fairport Convention are to Cropredy, so Madness are to Finsbury Park. SKU: 1033574

Storm In Heaven, A
Personnel: Richard Ashcroft (vocals, guitar, percussion); Nick McCabe (guitar, accordion, keyboards); Simon Clarke, Yvette Lacey (flute); Kick Horns (horns); Simon Jones (bass, background vocals); Peter Salisbury (drums, percussion). Recorded at The Sawmills Studio, Cornwall, England. The first Verve album, A STORM IN HEAVEN, was released in 1993, prior to some legal wrangling necessitating the addition of the definite article to the band's name. Appearing in the wake of the commercial success of the "shoegazer" trend in England, it successfully bridged the gap between the rock affectations of Ride's spectacular GOING BLANK AGAIN and Spiritualized's debut album, both early shoegazing cornerstones. Building on the spaciousness of their first few singles, A STORM IN HEAVEN marries the Verve's psychedelic leanings to the sonic whirlwind of Nick McCabe's guitar heroics. Highlights include "The Sun, the Sea," which is peppered with massive, crunching rock sounds, even featuring some hyperactive horns toward the end. "Virtual World," with the addition of flutes to the mix, conjures Jethro Tull caught in an elaborate crystalline guitar sound sculpture. The real winner here, though, is the majesticand enveloping "See You In the Next One (Have a Good Time)," which tones down much of the histrionics that precede it in favor of a dramatic acoustic sound with echoing vocals and McCabe's understated piano. I Hope You Dance
Personnel includes: Lee Ann Womack (vocals); Joe Manual, Richard Bennett (acoustic & electric guitars); Dan Tyminski, Pat Flynn, Mark Casstevens (acoustic guitar); Brent Mason (electric guitar); PaulFranklin (slide & steel guitars, dobro); Larry Franklin (mandolin, fiddle); Aubrie Haynie (fiddle); Michael Omartian (accordion); Steve Nathan (Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards); Michael Rhodes, Glenn Worf, Brett Beavers (bass); Eric Darken, Sam Bacco (percussion); Ricky Scaggs, Bekka Bramlett, Buddy Miller, Julie Miller, Ronnie Bowman, Jon Randall, Jason Sellers, Bergen White, Sons Of The Desert (background vocals). "I Hope You Dance" won the 2000 CMA Award for Single Of The Year and Song Of The Year. "I Hope You Dance" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Country Song. I HOPE YOU DANCE was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Country Album. "I Hope You Dance" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award in the categories of Song Of The Year and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. While her colleagues either dip their toes in pop music or embrace it wholeheartedly, Lee Ann Womack keeps it country. Womack's third release, I HOPE YOU DANCE, finds her looking back to country's past, while keeping both feet firmly in the present. Womack's nod to those who came before includes terrific cover versions of two modern classics: Rodney Crowell's "Ashes By Now" and Don Williams' "Lord I Hope This Day Is Good," as well as guest harmonies by New Traditionalist Ricky Skaggs (on "The Healing Kind"). More subtly, her respect is obvious in the Bakersfield twang of "I Feel Like I'm Forgetting Something," the Appalachian harmonies of "Does My Ring Burn Your Finger," and the album's rootsy instrumentation. But Womack places herself squarely in modern-day country with the lovely, poetic title track, a country take on Bob Dylan's "Forever Young," with guest vocals by Sons Of The Desert. Another standout is "Stronger Than I Am," a beautifully crafted song about a divorcee who realizes her daughter has survived the ordeal much better than she has. The tasteful production highlights Womack's delicate voice which, unlike those of her colleagues, dispenses with histrionics in favor of real emotion. In a sea of country/pop fluff, I HOPE YOU DANCE is a true gem. SKU: 6501286

Polythene [ECD]
Feeder: Grant Nicholas (vocals, guitar); Taka Hirose (bass); Jon Lee (drums). Producers: Feeder, Chris Sheldon, Grant Nicholas, Brian Sperber. Engineers: ChrisSheldon, Brian Sperber, Matt Sime. Feeder scored a hit single in the mother country with the acoustic flavored "High" and are looking to carry that success over into the colonies with their debut album POLYTHENE. Their modus operandi is mixing classic power pop melodies with Smashing Pumpkins bombast (and a bit of Billy Corgan crooning). Singer/guitarist Grant Nicholas' specialty is the big chorus. Taking the cue from Cheap Trick, "Polythene Girl" and "Cement" have hooks big enough to catch Moby Dick, all surrounded by enough crunchy guitars to make Jimmy Page proud. And they aren't afraid to put the pedal to the metal on "Stereo World" and "Tangerine," which contain some of the heavier riffs of the '90s. Finally, a band that can fulfill the promise of the second British Invasion. SKU: 1038977

Young Lust: The Aerosmith Anthology (The Very Best Of Aerosmith)
YOUNG LUST: THE AEROSMITH ANTHOLOGY contains tracks recorded for Geffen between 1985 and 1998. Aerosmith: Steven Tyler (vocals, mandolin, harmonica, keyboards); Joe Perry (guitar, dulcimer, background vocals); Brad Whitford (guitar); Tom Hamilton (bass); Joey Kramer (drums, percussion). Producers includes: Ted Templeman, Bruce Fairbairn, Michael Beinhorn, Aerosmith, Jack Douglas. Compilation producer: Mike Ragogna. Includes liner notes by Gerri Miller. Digitally remasteredby Erick Labson (Universal Mastering Studios-West, Hollywood, California). Few bands in rock & roll history have enjoyed the kind of over-the-top successful second act Aerosmith has that makes Behind-The-Music producers salivate and reinforces the legend moniker generally associated with these New England hard rockers. The 2-CD YOUNG LUST is a handy anthology of the band's Geffen years that chronicles this Boston quintet's climb back from the depths of drug abuse, personal turmoil and dramatic excess. MTV-friendly hits like "Rag Doll," "(Dude) Looks Like A Lady" and "Cryin'" are featured alongside the band's breakthrough Run-D.M.C. rap-rock summit ("Walk This Way") and a clutch of live favorites ("Sweet Emotion," "Dream On"). Along the way, Aerosmith found success infusing their writing with cheeky double-entendres ("Love In An Elevator"), serious topics like child abuse ("Janie's Got A Gun") and flat-out displays of guitar-soaked manna (the resurrected Joe Perry Project nugget "Let The Music Do The Talking"). Also included are the chugging, blues-driven, Japan-only "Ain't Enough," defiant non-album rocker "Don't Stop" and a soaring orchestral version of "Amazing." Even Aerosmith's contributions from the soundtracks to Air America (a stomping cover of "Love Me Two Times") and The Beavis & Butthead Experience (an infinitely catchy "Deuces Are Wild") get the nod on this far-reaching anthology. Peep Show
Siouxsie &The Banshees: Siouxsie Sioux (vocals); Jon Klein (guitar); Martin Martin McCarrick (cello, accordion, keyboards); Steven Severin (bass); Budgie (drums, percussion, harmonica). Recorded at Marcus Music, London, England between January to March 1988. The late 80's saw alternative music begin to infiltrate the mainstream, with such hit making acts as Depeche Mode, The Cure, and Jane's Addiction leaving an impression on the charts, radio, and MTV. It was around this time that one of the genre's founders, Siouxse & the Banshees, celebrated it's tenth anniversary as a band with their tenth studio album overall, 1988's PEEP SHOW. The album follows in the direction of its previous studio album, 86's TINDERBOX (the band had also issued an all covers release, THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, between the two) - in so much that the arrangements were much tighter than their adventurous early 80's work. Highlights included the singles "Peek A Boo," "Killing Jar," and "Last Beat of my Heart," as well as the lesser known cuts "Turn to Stone" and album closer, "Rhapsody." SKU: 5048327

Magical Sounds Of Banco De Gaia, The
Banco De Gaia includes: Toby Marks. This is part of Six Degrees' Travel Series. Judge by the new-age travelogue cover of the digipak, and you can be forgiven for dismissing Toby Marks' latest long-player on first glance. However, those two, scuba fin-adorned feet in close proximity to the Kubrick obelisk perfectly capture the contradictory essence that is at the core of Marks' batch of magical new sounds. Still effortlessly combining a multitude of styles and genres in a Macaronic wall of sound, Marks further broadens the Banco de Gaia palette to sow progressive modes between the thick dance grooves. "I Love Baby Cheesy" is astrident and delightful pastiche of oddball vocal samples, crashing waves of synthetic noise, African lutes, and charging electronics-rituals for the rave. Then there's the very un-Banco "144K," brimming with computerized specters, backward loops that sound like the devil whistling, and vagabond strings set amid a lumbering beast of a beat. It all adds up to Banco de Gaia's coolest shade of pale yet. SKU: 3102631

Time Sex Love
This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Personnel includes: Mary-Chapin Carpenter (vocals, acoustic guitar); Duke Levine (electric guitar, mandola); John Jennings (electric slide guitar, percussion); Steve Nathan (piano); Jon Carroll (Hammond B-3 organ); Glenn Worf (bass); Dave Mattaks (drums); Garrison Starr, Jon Carroll (background vocals). Producers: Mary Chapin Carpenter, John Jennings, Blake Chancey. Recorded at Air Studios, London, Englandin November 2000. TIME SEX LOVE was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award For Best Engineered Album. With one foot in adult pop, one in country, and one in singer/songwriterdom, Mary Chapin Carpenter has always been tough to pin down. TIME*SEX*LOVE probably won't make it any easier for listeners to pigeonhole her, either. The album represents all the facets of Carpenter's work, from moody folk-rock ("Swept Away") to bluesy, Bonnie Raitt-like grit ("Simple Life"). Along the way, a number of other influences peek their head into the mix. The baroque, harmony-laden sound of "Maybe World" is redolent of PET SOUNDS-era Beach Boys, while the sparkling pop-rock of "The Long Way Home" is reminiscent of Carpenter's take on Lucinda Williams's "Passionate Kisses." "In the Name of Love" even employs a sitar as a key element. Clearly, Carpenter is an artist whose only unwavering characteristic is a commitment to intelligent songwriting. When it comes to stylistic detours, she shows an appealing tendency to wander the map. SKU: 1059134

154
Wire: Colin Newman, B.C. Gilbert (vocals, guitars); Graham Lewis (vocals, bass); Robert Gotobed (drums). Additional personnel: Hilly Kristal (vocals); Tim Souster (electric viola); Kate Lucas (alto flute); Joan Whiting (English horn); Mike Thorne (keyboards). Like its predecessor, 1977's CHAIRS MISSING, 154 finds Wire moving away from its punk roots toward darker, more experimental horizons. There is less overt anger and insolence than in the past, and in its place is plenty of dark weirdness. Truly disturbing at certain points, this album is a challenging listen. This is not a record to slap on while you clean up the house. Beginning with the sinister "I Should Have Known Better" a song that has so little to do with the same-titled Beatles song that it really is scary, 154 follows with the shambling, atonal "Two People in a Room" and the choppy, robotic guitars of "The 15th." The fiendish "A Touching Display" sounds like music for a primitive rite, while on "A Mutual Friend," close British Invasion-flavored harmonies collide with harsh, dangerous-sounding guitar chords. The highlight here, and arguably the most incredible song in Wire's book, is "Map Ref. 41 N, 93 W." Words fail to conjure the otherworldly majesty of this track. It may be some kind of twisted cartographer's love song, but it could also be the backing music for a love scene between two artificial intelligences. What can you say? A stunner. SKU: 1001248

English Settlement [Remastered]
XTC: Andy Partridge (vocals, guitars, keyboards, background vocals); Colin Moulding (vocals, bass piano, keyboards, background vocals); Dave Gregory (guitar, synthesizer, background vocals); Terry Chambers (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Hugh Padgham, Trans De Vente (background vocals). Recorded at The Manor, Oxfordshire, England. Any doubt's about XTC's abilities and directions following their permanent withdrawal from live performance after the release of BLACK SEA were cast aside when this album appeared in 1982. Originally released as a double album (and subsequently formatted onto a single CD), it marked the dawning of their more pastoral phase. However, far from settingaside their rocking grooves, they now came wrapped in a softer blanket, of more intricate arrangements. "Senses Working Overtime" garnered them some airplay in the states, which brought in new fans who were treated to a wonderful range of songs which all featured a judicious mix of electric and acoustic instruments. ENGLISH SETTLEMENT is the band's second homerun in a row. SKU: 1061064

Precious Stone (In The Studio With Sly Stone 1963-1965)
Personnel includes: Sly Stone, Freddie Stone, Rose Stone. PRECIOUS STONE's 28 tracks include demos, finished songs, alternate takes and a radio jingle recorded between 1963 and 1965. Before forming the Family Stone, Sylvester Stewart (aka Sly Stone) paid his dues as a radio DJ and producer for the West Coast indie label Autumn Records, where he oversaw hits by artists including Bobby Freeman, and the Beau Brummels (along with flops by the GreatSociety, featuring a young Grace Slick). PRECIOUS STONE collects a nice cross section of Stewart's mostly previously unreleased productions, both for himself and other artists. The album makes for an interesting snapshot of an early '60s pop moment, running the gamut as it does from derivative R&B and pop-rock, to folk-rock, to a flat out rip-off ("Buttermilk Pt. 1") of the Rolling Stones' album track "2120 South Michigan Avenue." There's also an embryonic version of Sly Stone's later '60s innovations in "Can't You Tell I Love Her," a mutated gospel number done as a duet with Billy Preston. SKU: 4125560
