Woman And A Man, A
Personnel includes: Belinda Carlisle (vocals); Brian Wilson, Per Gessle, Susannah Hoffs, Seattle Symphony Orchestra. Everyone's favorite Go-Go is back with another solo effort, and her fans shouldn't be disappointed. Carlisle still has the vocal qualities that have always defined her as something special; the shaky vibrato on those long notes, the strong, husky tone, and a knack for finding catchy melodies. A WOMAN AND A MAN showcases those qualities, as well as staking out some new ground for this talented singer. Carlisle has expanded her sound on this disc. Where she formerly adhered to somewhat predictable arrangements and production, here she uses a broader sonic pallette. "California" is a dark-tinted, mid-tempo ballad with '60s-bubble-gum background vocals. But Carlisle's forte isstill big, sweeping pop songs like the title track, where she builds upon a solid pop foundation to explode into a truly inspirational, foot-stomping chorus. SKU: 1003465

Let's Bottle Bohemia
The Thrills (Ireland): Conor Deasy (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica); Daniel Ryan (guitar, banjo, bass guitar, background vocals); Padraic McMahon (guitar, bass guitar, background vocals); Kevin Horan (piano, organ, background vocals); Ben Carrigan (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Peter Buck (guitar, mandolin); Jay Dee Maness (pedal steel guitar). Recording information: Sunset Sound, Hollywood, California (02/2004 - 06/2004); Larrabee Studios, Los Angeles, California (02/2004 - 06/2004). Arranger: Van Dyke Parks. The sophomore effort by Ireland's Thrills, like the band's debut, SO MUCH FOR THE CITY, traffics heavily in the world of American FM radio from the late 1960s and early '70s. Neil Young, America, the Band, and '70s soul are all clearly touchstones. But the Thrills synthesize their influences admirably, and sustain the retro vibe with strong musicianship, sophisticated arrangements, and excellent pop songwriting. LET'S BOTTLE BOHEMIA's lead-off cut, "Tell Me Something I Don't Know," for example, marries a Stones-like riff to country-rock melodies, high harmonies, and chiming keyboards, with appealing, offhand ease. String-sweetened Philly soul plays a role in "Whatever Happened to Corey Haim," which contrasts with rumbling rockers ("Our Wasted Lives") and the loping tempos of piano-driven gems ("Not for All the Love in the World"). The Thrills manage to sound rootsy and utterly contemporary at once, with sparklingly modern production touches offsetting an ostensibly folk-rock sound. Lead singer Conor Deasy resembles a cross between Neil Young and the Flaming Lip's Wayne Coyne, with a touch of postmodern irony, and guest instrumentalists Van Dyke Parks and Peter Buck add flair to this enjoyable, simultaneously fresh and familiar outing. All Things Must Pass [Remastered]
Includes 5 bonus tracks. Personnel: George Harrison (vocals, guitar); Sam Brown (vocals); Dhani Harrison (acosutic guitar, Fender Rhodes piano, background vocals); Badfinger (guitar, percussion); Dave Mason, Eric Clapton (guitar); Pete Drake (pedal steel guitar); Bobby Keys (tenor saxophone); Jim Price (trumpet); Billy Preston, Gary Wright, Bobby Whitlock, Gary Brooker (keyboards); Carl Radle, Klaus Voorman (bass); Ringo Starr, Alan White, Jim Gordon (drums, percussion); Ray Cooper, Mal Evans (tambourine). Engineers: Ken Scott, Philip McDonald, Ken Scott. Includes liner notes by George Harrison. Digitally remastered by Jon Astley. Harrison's grand statement, ALL THINGS MUST PASS proved that "the quiet Beatle" had a lot to say. Weaving his interest in Indian religion together with a strong set of tunes, the 3-LP set proved to be more than an "all-star" album; it was a set of songs that ranged from gentle ("Beware Of Darkness" and the contemplative title track) to stirring (the world-wide hits "My Sweet Lord" and "What Is Life?"). He also payed tributeto the fans who waited outside Abbey Road studios for a glimpse of the Beatles ("Apple Scruffs"). SKU: 1053116

American Stars 'N' Bars
Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Frank Sampredo (acoustic & electric guitars, synthesizer); Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Nicolette Larson (background vocals). Ben Keith (steel guitar, dobro, background vocals); Carole Mayedo (violin); Billy Talbot (bass, background vocals); Tim Drummond (bass); Ralph Molina (drums, background vocals); Karl T. Himmel (drums). Producers: Neil Young, David Briggs, Tim Mulligan, Elliot Mazer. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Released right after the career albums TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT and ZUMA and right before the big-selling COMES A TIME and RUST NEVER SLEEPS, this country-rocky 1977 album isoften forgotten. But it introduced the sensational "Like A Hurricane," which has remained a staple of Young's concerts, and such quirky favorites as "Homegrown," an ode to marijuana, and "Old Country Waltz," which is exactly what it says it is. As Neil Young's legendary 1970s albums go, it might be a bit of a tossed-off affair, but most country-rockers can only dream of making one album this good. SKU: 1085098

Saxophone Colossus
Personnel: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Tommy Flanagan (piano); Doug Watkins (bass); Max Roach (drums). Recordedat the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on June 22, 1956. Originally released on Prestige (7079). Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Shigeo Miyamoto (JVC Studios). The year 1956 marked a turning point for Sonny Rollins. Out of the ashes of what had been a talented but troubled young tenor saxophonist, came a new Sonny Rollins, his purpose clarified and strengthened, his muse razor sharp and brimming with new visions. As a new member of the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Organization, he was inspired as much by their spiritual consistency as their artistic integrity. By his own admission, even as a jazz tadpole, Sonny Rollins possessed a brawny sound and a powerful rhythmic drive...but other elements were missing. With SAXOPHONE COLOSSUS, Sonny Rollins created a personal vision of the tenor saxophone and modern jazz brimming over with joy and conviction. SAXOPHONE COLOSSUS was a breakthrough recording, praised for its lyrical power, thematic logic, relentless swing and spontaneous invention. Borrowing a page from his West Indian roots, Rollins' "St. Thomas" employed elements of Caribbean folk melodies and calypso rhythms to create an exotic, dancing tenor anthem--one of the most identifiable, beloved themes in all of jazz--driven along by Max Roach's melodic drumming, Tommy Flannagan's shimmering accompaniment, and the saxophonist's swaggering melodic invention. Rollins displayed fresh harmonic power and innovative methods of thematic develpment throughout SAXOPHONE COLOSSUS. On the swinging starts and stops of "Strode Rode" and the dreamy blues cycles of "Blue 7," Rollins began his solos with simple melodic motifs, and orchestrated them into grand, elongated thematic statements--every note made meaningful by Rollins' extraordinary sense of development and intuitive musical architecture. In addition, his tenor timbre took on renewed vigor and complexity on two ballads: "Moritat" (our old friend "Mack The Knife") and his epic reading of "You Don't Know What Love Is." SKU: 1004335

Black Woman And Child
Personnel: Sizzla (vocals); E. Wilks, D. Browne (guitar); D. Fraser, (saxophone, background vocals); Saxie (saxophone); Nambo (trombone); P. Enton (piano, keyboards, bass, drums); B. Ohare, Jazzwad (keyboards, bass, drums); D. Dennis, B. Myers (keyboards, bass); P. Crossdale (keyboards); Robert Shakespeare (bass); M. Miller, Sly Dunbar, Paul (drums); Bongo Herman, Dish(congas); M. Gitten, D. Browne (background vocals). Producers: Bobby Digital Dixon, The Crew For Digital B Music LTD. Recorded at Digital B Studio, Kingston, Jamaica. Whether accounts of his outspoken, controversial sociopolitical pronouncements are exaggeration or even pure rumor, they perfectly encapsulate the quality that has made Sizzla such a sensation in the Jamaican dancehall. His is an uncompromising millenarian vision more akin to the urgent roots style made famous by Burning Spear, Black Uhuru and Bob Marley than any of his deejay contemporaries. BLACK WOMAN & CHILD is compiled and produced by the original Bobby Digital, (the Jamaican producer who oversaw Buju's re-birth as a conscious deejay on TIL SHILOH, not RZA's alter ego). More than any other album, it represents the style and the songs which assured Sizzla his cult status among devotees of "conscious" music. SKU: 4122917

Exit...stage Left
Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, synthesizer, bass); Alex Lifeson (guitar, bass pedal synthesizer); Neil Peart (drums, percussion). Hot on the heels of their most successful album, Rush's 1981 tour was documented and released as EXIT, itself a Top 10 record. The package is an essential purchase for Rush diehards as well as hard rock fans. It makes a fine companion to ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE, as there are no repeated tracks. The two live records combine to make a fine representation ofRush's prime era. "YYZ" from MOVING PICTURES features Neil Peart's drum solo and shows why he is truly one of rock's premier skin bashers. Fan favorite "Closer to the Heart" gets the crowd participation going while the epic "Jacob's Ladder" is made to be played in an arena setting. "Xanadu" and album closer "La Villa Strangiato" are both mammoth tracks that exceed the studio versions due to the excellent interplay of the band and their growth as musicians. Recorded in the U.K. and Canada, EXIT is a phenomenal live recording that shows the band can interpret their studio material with both feeling and expertise. SKU: 1004907

Hybrid Theory
Linkin Park: Mike Shinoda (vocals, programming, samples); Chester Bennington (vocals); Brad Delson (guitar, bass, background vocals); Rob Bourdon (drums, background vocals); Joseph Hahn (turntables, programming). Additional personnel includes: Ian Hornbeck, Scott Koziol (bass); The Dust Brothers (programming). Recorded at NRG Recordings, North Hollywood, California. "Crawling" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. Linkin Park's mixture of metal, industrial rock, and rap fits comfortably into the niche created by the likes of Kid Rock, Korn, and Limp Bizkit. The opening "Papercut" is every bit as angular and unavoidable as its title. "With You" opens with electronic squeaks and squiggles before leaping into a mix of heavy guitar riffs and hip-hop rhythms. "Crawling" bears a largely subdued tone and atmospheric synth coloring that provides a respite from the crushing riffs and grinding rhythms that typify HYBRID THEORY, but even this relatively sedate song is full of tension and sonic angst. The five young men of Linkin Park are on a mission to communicate their inner turmoil through a non-stop barrage of confrontational lyrics and aggressive aural constructions, and their debut gets the point across with alacrity. Aquarium
Aqua: Lene Grawford Nystrom, Rene Dif (vocals); Soren Rasted (various instruments, background vocals); Claus Noreen (various instruments). Additional personnel: Douglas Carr, Claus Hvass, Jan Langhoff (guitar); Bee, Kati, Vivian Cardinal, Marian Binderup, Mogens Binderup (background vocals). Producers: Johnny Jam, Delgado, Soren Rasted, Claus Norreen, Hartmann & Langhoff, TommyEkman, Per Aderbratt, Rene Dif. AQUARIUM isn't the place to turn if you're looking for introspective, soul-searching meditiations on the meaning of life and the universe. But if you like techno bubble gum this might just be a little slice of heaven. They love it in Denmark, where the album went quintuple platinum, and they love it in the clubs, because the mechanical, boppy, sing-songiness makes for the perfect dance music. "Happy Boys and Girls," the disc's opening track, is a perfect representation of the Aqua sound: "Be happy" squeal the little-girl backup singers. The drum machine kicks in, mechanical high-hat hissing away, and you can just see those European dance floors filling up with happy Danish boys and girls. This disc has a tongue-in-cheek feel to it, as if Aqua is almost satirizing the techno-dance genre, but it's basically harmless, good-natured fun. SKU: 1004822

Captain Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy [Remastered]
"Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds," "One Day At A Time" and "Philadelphia Freedom" did not appear on the original version of CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY. Personnel: Elton John (vocals, piano, electric piano, harpsichord, Clavinet, Mellotron, Arp String Ensemble Synthesizer); Davey Johnstone (acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin, piano, background vocals); Dave Hentschel (Arp synthesizer); Dee Murray (bass, background vocals); Nigel Olsson (drums, background vocals); Ray Cooper (congas, bongos, tambourine, gong, shaker, jawbone, cymbal, bells, belltree, triangle); John Lennon. Recorded at Caribou Ranch, Colorado from June to July, 1974. Includes liner notes by John Tobler. Digitally remastered by Tony Cousins (Metropolis Mastering, London, England). In the pre-punk era, where severely inflated egos and ludricous concept albums were de rigeur, Elton John and Bernie Taupin's account of their rise from struggling penury to the peak of superstardom is one of rock's better attempts at self-mythology. The original vinyl record was an elaborate package in itself, and the music within is on a suitably grandiose and self-indulgent scale. At times,John's music and Taupin's lyrics struggle to gel, but when they come together on tracks such as 'Someone Saved My Life Tonight' and 'Gotta Get A Meal Ticket', John carries the concept with suitable aplomb. Osbournes' Family Album, The (Original TV Soundtrack) [PA]
THE OSBOURNE FAMILY ALBUM is a musical compendium that helps tell the story of rock & roll Prince Of Darkness Ozzy Osbourne and his brood, whose reality show became oneof MTV's highest rated programs ever. Opening with former next-door-neighbor Pat Boone's swanky lounge version of "Crazy Train," this collection provides background on Ozzy, spouse Sharon, and kids Jack and Kelly (elder Osbourne daughter Aimee chose not to be involved in the show, although she is continually referenced in the album notes). Among the tidbits the liner notes provide is that the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" turned Ozzy onto rock music, John Lennon's "Imagine" is Ozzy and Sharon's song, and the Beatlesque "Dreamer" was penned as a Lennon tribute. "Mama, I'm Coming Home" was written for Sharon while her hubby was on the road and is her favorite Ozzy song. Kelly's rec-room cover of "Papa Don't Preach" shows her interest in the family business is best served elsewhere, while Jack's A&R attempt resulted in the grungy dream-pop of Dillusion's "Mirror." Liberally sprinkled with hilarious profanity-spiked audio excerpts from the show, THE OSBOURNE FAMILY ALBUM is a neat souvenir from this highly entertaining show. SKU: 1073371

Hudson Project, The
Full performer name: John Abercrombie/Peter Erskine/John Patitucci/Bob Mintzer. Personnel: John Abercrombie (guitar); Bob Mintzer (saxophone); John Patitucci (bass); Peter Erskine (drums). Recorded at The Manhattan Center, New York, New York on October 17, 1998. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. When the D'Addario musical instrument company decided to put together a supergroup of their endorsers for a once-in-a-lifetime tour, they didn't fool around. They managed to pull guitarist John Abercrombie, drummer Peter Erskine, saxophonist Bob Mintzer, and bassist John Patitucci away from their busy schedules to display their talents to ecstatic fans everywhere. This set, caught live at New York's Manhattan Center, is a stunning performance that catches each of these virtuosos at his best. One of the most refreshing aspects of the set is the lack of standards. Instead, all of the tunes were penned by the members of the quartet, which results in the music having a sparkling quality that speaks of fresh ideas and an intimate connection. The pieces range in style from the bopping opener "Runferyerlife" to the esoteric "Bass Desires." Patitucci's earthy "Labor Day" offers a heavy groove and ample room for each member to add his own funky statement. Of special note is Erskine's "Cats &Kittens," which reveals the most spirited performance of the set as the group digs into the drummer's greasy New Orleans groove. The dynamic "Modern Day Tuba" closes the evening on a stratospheric high note. SKU: 1030051

Promised Land [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Elvis Presley, Voice, J.D. Sumner & The Stamps (vocals). Engineers include: Dick Baxter, Mike Moran, Mickey Crofford. Producer: John Snyder. Reissue producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Recorded in Memphis, Tennessee in December 1973. Digitally remastered by Joe Lopes (February 1989, RCA Recording Studios, New York). In 1973, Elvis Presley booked sessions at Memphis' famous Stax Studios, where Booker T. & the MGs, Otis Redding, and numerous other soul stars had recorded hits. Unfortunately, initial efforts to have Presley work with the Stax stable of musicians yielded few usable tracks, and Elvis soon called in his stage band to finish the sessions. The results can be heard on the albums GOOD TIMES, RAISED ON ROCK, and PROMISED LAND. Like most of Elvis' 70s recordings, PROMISED LAND is an eclectic mix reflecting Presley's many musical enthusiasms. The ten songs that make up this album run the gamut from country heartbreak songs ("There's a Honky Tonk Angel," "Mr. Songman") to carnal white funk ("If You Talk in Your Sleep") to heartfelt gospel ("Help Me") to schmaltzy pop ("Love Song of the Year," "It's Midnight"). While the performances on PROMISED LAND are uniformly excellent, the material is a mixed bag of strong material and throwaways. The production is extravagant, typical of Presley recordings from this era. Those interested in hearing these songs in sparer settings might wantto check out RHYTHM AND COUNTRY, a collection of undubbed alternate takes from the Stax sessions. SKU: 1058473

Chocolate City [Remastered]
Parliament: William "Bootsy" Collins (vocals, guitar, bass); George Clinton (vocals); Cordell Mosson (guitar, bass); Gary Shider (guitar, background vocals); Bernie Worrell (keyboards, synthesizer); Perkash John (bass); Tiki Fulwood, Tyrone Lampkin (drums); Calvin Simon, Fuzzy Haskins, Grady Thomas, Raymond Davis, Eddie Hazel (background vocals). Recorded at United Sound, Detroit, Michigan and Hollywood Sound, Hollywood, California. Includes liner notes by Tom Terrell. Released in 1975 (a year after UP FOR THE DOWN STROKE), this record finds ringleader George Clinton and his company beginning to refine the group's uber-groove aesthetic. The earlier eclecticism of DOWN STROKE and OSMIUM, as well as the acid-drenched, electric-guitar-based freakouts of Funkadelic (a separate Clinton-fronted group that features an essentially similar lineup), are less in evidence here. Instead, powerful, in-the-pocket drumming and Bootsy Collins' irresistibly funky bass move things to the dancefloor. While not nearly up to par with the watershed MOTHERSHIP CONNECTION that would follow in thesame year, CHOCOLATE CITY contains several fine tracks. Among these are the title piece, a laid-back jam with sterling horn improvisations and a tongue-in-cheek political rap from Clinton, and the overwhelmingly exuberant "Ride On." Though not mandatory, this disc is a worthy addition to the P-Funk library. SKU: 1083794

Double Nickels On The Dime
The CD reissue of DOUBLE NICKELS ON A DIME includes 43 songs. Two songs have been deleted from the original LP to insure playback on all CD players. The Minutemen: D. Boon (vocals, guitar); Mike Watt (vocals, bass); George Hurley (drums, percussion). Principally recorded at Radio Tokyo, Venice, California in November 1983 and April 1984. Originally issued as a 2-LP set. This sprawling double-length release is the Minutemen's undisputed high-water mark, and one of the seminal platters of the post-punk, pre-grunge years. It perfectly encapsulates the strengths shown in their early works, then ups the ante. DOUBLE NICKELS runs the gamut from hardcore funk and honky-tonk to vaguely avant-garde experimentation, jazzy workouts, and a Steely Dan cover. The level of songwriting has also been turned up several notches. The less-is-more aesthetic is still in effect--mostsongs last two minutes or so, and the essential elements of scratchy funk guitar and a hard and nimble rhythm section remain. But the canvas is more varied than before, with moments of oddball humor, songs about indoor plumbing, bizarro instrumentals, bits of gentle acoustic guitar. The group plays with its characteristic gusto, infusing songs like "Political Song for Michael Jackson to Sing" and "The Roar of the Masses Could be Farts" with glorious rage. And d. Boon takes aim at such targets as the banality of advertising ("The Big Foist") and the hell of working for the man ("This Ain't No Picnic," one of their best) with articulate bluntness. One of many gems is a funkified live take of Creedence's "Don't Look Now." SKU: 1017704
