Back To Back (Duke Ellington & Johnny Hodges Play The Blues/Remastered)
Personnel: Duke Ellington (piano); Johnny Hodges (alto saxophone); Harry "Sweets" Edison (trumpet); Les Spann (guitar); Al Hall, Sam Jones (bass); Jo Jones (drums). Original producer: Norman Granz. Reissue producer: Michael Lang. Recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, New York, February 20, 1959. Originally released on Verve (6055). Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather and Michael Ullman. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Chris Herles (PolyGram Studios). The Duke is most often remembered leading his large orchestras, yet throughout his career he would take "breaks" to record many fine small-group sessions. This gem features long-time Ellington player Johnny Hodges, who, in the '50s, struck out on his own. His solo career produced fine music but little financial success, so he rejoined Duke's organization. On this session, the blues forms the common ground on which both men meet. All of these songs were composed between 1910 and 1930, and these cats slip in and walk about in them like a comfy pair of bedroom slippers. Ellington's piano is spare and understated; he gives the spotlight to Johnny. Hodges wails the late-night blues with a combination of gentility, passion and sly wit. Harry Edison'strumpet (he played on many Frank Sinatra sessions in the '50s and '60s) is a joy. Hodges was truly one of a kind--after all, how many saxophonists were admired by both tenor sax innovator John Coltrane and easy-listening bandleader Lawrence Welk? All in all, a richly rewarding collaborative project. SKU: 1005801

Peter Gabriel Vol.1 [SACD]
Personnel includes: Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush (vocals); Robert Fripp (guitar); Roy Bittan, Larry Fast (keyboards); Tony Levin (bass); Phil Collins (drums); Dick Wagner, Jim Maelen, Steve Hunter, Allan Schwartzberg. Recorded at The Soundstage, Toronto, Canada. Digitally remastered by Tony Cousins (Metropolis). In 1977, two years after leaving Genesis, Peter Gabriel emerged as a solo artist with the first of three records entitled PETER GABRIEL. He was anxious for a change of musical direction, but after years of fronting one of the foremost art-rock outfits of the era, he hadn't exactly lost histaste for the dramatic. On his own, Gabriel was free to explore his own personal obsessions. Consequently the work is rife with images of isolation, paranoia, and the apocalypse. Aided by the London Symphony Orchestra and the cavernous production of Bob Ezrin (Kiss, Alice Cooper), the record reaches dramatic peaks of symphonic rock. Musically, Gabriel was clearly in experimental mode. The collection opens with the cheery yet menacing "Moribund the Burgermeister" (which sounds like a twisted fairy tale), followed by the hit "Solsbury Hill," a lilting acoustic ballad which obliquely addresses Gabriel's departure from Genesis and is an enduring fixture on FM radio. "Modern Love," with its larynx-shredding vocal, rocks as hard as anything Gabriel ever recorded. The just plain odd "Excuse Me," Gabriel's sole foray into barbershop quartet territory, has old-world charm, and "Here Comes the Flood" is Gabriel at his doomiest. SKU: 1082950

Underwater Moonlight (3LP+7")
This edition of UNDERWATER MOONLIGHT contains the original album, rare singles/EP tracks and a second CD consisting of previously unreleased material recorded at the Cambridge Rowing Club Boathouse, Cambridge, England between September 1979 & July 1980. The Soft Boys: Kimberly Rew (vocals, guitar, synthesizer, bass); Robyn Hitchcock (vocals, guitar, bass); Morris Windsor (vocals, drums); Matthew Seligman (bass). Additional personnel: Andy King (sitar); Gerry Hale (violin). Includes liner notes by David Fricke. Disc 2 digitally remastered by Matt at SAE Mastering, Phoenix, Arizona. The second album by The Soft Boys was also their final release (though the odds-and-ends set INVISIBLE HITS followed and is worthy in its own right). The more oblique and jagged stylings of their debut (A CAN OF BEES) are left behind in favor of a punchy, hopped-up Byrds sound that perfectly complements Robyn Hitchcock's surreal imagery. This is the document that belatedly alerted the world to a great band. Unable to secure a release in the United States, The Soft Boys disbanded shortly after the release of UNDERWATER MOONLIGHT. Justifiably hailed as a classic, this is a powerful work of towering grace and finesse, forcefulrhythms and big guitars in service to great songs--an essential album. SKU: 1053691

Infamous Angel
Personnel: Iris DeMent (vocals, acoustic guitar); Emmylou Harris, Hal Ketchum, Flora Mae DeMent (vocals); Mark Howard (acoustic guitar); Jerry Douglas, Al Perkins (dobro); Stuart Duncan (fiddle, mandolin); Pete Wasner (piano); Roy Husky, Jr. (acoustic bass); Jim Rooney, Jim Rooney, Jeff Black (background vocals). Recorded at The Cowboy Arms Hotel & Recording Spa, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by John Prine and Iris DeMent. To many fans, Iris DeMent's debut INFAMOUS ANGEL remains the best work of her career. Unlike her later records, which sometimes get mired in political dogmatism and bleak melancholy, INFAMOUS ANGEL is the work of a wide-eyed innocent extolling the simple virtues of love, faith, and home. From the whimsical spiritualism of "Let the Mystery Be" to the brisk love song "Hotter Than Mojave in my Heart" through to the album's closing affirmation of faith (the traditional gospel classic "Higher Ground"), INFAMOUS ANGEL evokes a world full of promise and possibility. Best of all are "Our Town," a loving tribute to a dying small town, and "Mama's Opry," a stunningly effective reminiscence of childhood and the effect of a mother's love of music. Accompaniment on all 11 tracks is sparse but sublime, unsurprising given the all-star cast of musicians who appear here: dobro player Al Perkins, bassist Roy Husky Jr., and singer Emmylou Harris, among others. DeMent's vocals, however, are the album's real musical find. Her big voice and broad pronunciation invite comparisons to HazelDickens, the great West Virginian old-time singer. SKU: 1009457

Jailhouse Rock (Original Soundtrack)
This 1997 compilation includes the soundtracks to the movies "Love Me Tender" (1956) and "Jailhouse Rock" (1957), and features four previously-unreleased tracks. A complete soundtrack album was never previously released for either movie. At the time of the movies' release, the songs were released on various EPs and singles; they were also collected on such compilation albums as A DATE WITH ELVIS. Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals, guitar); Scotty Moore, Vito Mumolo (guitar); Luther Rountree (banjo); Dom Frontiere, Carl Fontina (accordion); Dudley Brooks, Mike Stoller (piano); Bill Black, Myer Rubin (bass); D.J. Fontana, Richard Cornell (drums); Rad Robinson, Jon Dodson, Charles Prescott, The Jordanaires (background vocals). Compilation producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Recorded at MGM Studios, Culver City, California; Radio Recorders and Twentieth Century Fox, Stage 1, Hollywood, California between August 1956 and September 1957. The characters Elvis portrayed on film often inhabited walks of life far removed from his own. 1957's JAILHOUSE ROCK was one of the few movies that found him playing exactly what he was (no, not an ex-con): a gifted young singer whose talent was as natural as it was undeniable. And, in contrast to most Elvis movie soundtracks, the songs adhere closely to the core of what Elvis' music was all about. Backed by Sun Records stalwarts Scotty Moore and Bill Black, among others, Elvis sang the bejeezus out a batch of soon-to-be classics, mostly written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Whether he was spitting out the party-in-the-penitentiary lyrics to the title song or gently caressing the melody of gorgeous ballads like "Young And Beautiful," Elvis gave his all on JAILHOUSE ROCK. It would be one of the last times he would be able to make as deep an emotional connection with his film material. (He was in nearly as fine form on 1956's LOVE ME TENDER, whose principal songs, including the classic title ballad, have been added to the JAILHOUSE ROCKreissue.) All the more reason to savor this serendipitous marriage of commerce and art. SKU: 5016510

Remixes
It's been said that remix projects are usually a hit or miss affair, depending on who's involved. Probably due to the involvement of Matmos, Mice Parade, and Savath & Savalas, among others, this one's a solid hit. While a remix album often means that the listener is inflicted with flaccid and amorphous sounds floating over a recycled groove, here it means some intelligent and satisfying re-working of pre-existing material. For the most part, this disc has a sharp edge, typified by the opening track, with a lot of hard cuts and solid grooves. Every track is fascinating inits own way, and none wear out their welcome. The collection is well sequenced, too, starting out more rhythmically and gradually working its way up to the concluding melodic and dreamy Mice Parade cut. And, as if sonic excellence weren't enough, REMIXES comes in a totally cool package. SKU: 1035503

Emotional
Personnel includes: K-Ci (vocals); Jojo (vocals); Baby Face (acoustic guitar, keyboards, programming, background vocals); Michael Ripoll (guitar); Blacq Rose (guitar, keyboards, bass, programming, background vocals); Mike Smooth (guitar, bass, programming); Jeffrey Freeman, Bill Meyers, Craig Xavier Brockman, (keyboards); Devon Dobson (programming); Tanga Ray, Baby Face (background vocals); Rodney Jerkins. Producers: Rodney Jerkins, Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds. A separate duo even when their group Jodeci was dominating the R&B charts in the mid-'90s, Cedric and Joel Hailey are obviously comfortable in each other's musical company. And this empathy shows in the pair's 2002 offering EMOTIONAL, the follow-up to 2000's X. While there's no obvious standout track here, the album functions as a primer in softsoul stylings, with the multi-layered vocals and lush harmonies punctuated by the pair's occasional soulful rasps. Love-man themes dominate, and with titles such as "This Very Moment," Love Me Carefully," and "Say Yes," the duo stake out their emotional terrain and navigate the sophisticated arrangements with assurance and aplomb. Although their days as a chart threat may be behind them, there's enough here to guarantee these smooth soul veterans a place in the hearts of a grateful boudoir-bound listening public. And like fine brandy, their vocals just get better with age. SKU: 1077803

So Tough
Saint Etienne: Sarah Cracknell (vocals); Bob Stanley (keyboards, synthesizers, handclaps); Pete Wiggs (Moog synthesizer, bass, sampler). Additional personnel:Q-Tee (vocals); Ian Catt (guitar, programming); Cajun Queen (bass). Recorded at RMS Studios, London, England in 1992. Includes liner notes by Kevin Pearce. At the time of this album's release, dance music scenesters assumed that the title of 1993's SO TOUGH was some sort of response to the Pet Shop Boys' recent SO HARD. Actually, the album title is stolen from the 1972 Beach Boys album CARL AND THE PASSIONS--SO TOUGH. Even more so than the group's kaleidoscopic 1991 debut, FOXBASE ALPHA, SO TOUGH marries club rhythms to classic pop forms. The arrangements, while only occasionally resembling Brian Wilson's work, are undoubtedly influenced by his style. This is particularly evident on the lush, hypnotic "Avenue," which wears its PET SOUNDS influence proudly. Elsewhere, the Continental "Mario's Cafe," girl-groupish "You're in a Bad Way," and thumping "Join Our Club" exhibit other sides of Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs' smart, open-minded musical attitude. SO TOUGH is much more than the sum of its influences. SKU: 6480679

Soul Finger
The Bar-Kays: Jimmy King (guitar); Phalon Jones (saxophone); Ben Cauley (trumpet); RonnieCaldwell (organ); James Alexander (bass); Carl Cunningham (drums). Includes original liner notes by Booker T. of the MG's. This is the Bar-Kays first album and was originally released on July 7, 1967 on Volt (417). On the Bar-Kays' first album, it's obvious why they were constantly lauded by legends such as Booker T. Jones and Steve Cropper as key soul music innovators. SOUL FINGER, the only release by the original lineup before the tragic December 1967 plane crash that killed Otis Redding and four of the band (they reformed in 1968), contains 11 instrumental tracks, each of them catchy, danceable and all around attention-grabbing. SOUL FINGER is marked by Phalon Jones and Ben Cauley's infectious horn riffs and Jimmy King's sparse yet sensitive guitar work. Add Ronnie Caldwell's bluesy organ and Carl Cunningham's rock steady grooves, and you've got a hypnotic recipe for down-home Memphis soul. Songs such as "You Can't Sit Down" and "Bar-Kay's Boogaloo" are ideal party tunes. Energetic and life affirming, this music is simply contagious. SKU: 1009809

Miss Thang
Personnel: Monica (vocals), Tommy Martin (guitar), Bob Robinson (keyboards), Colin Wolfe, Ronnie Garrett (bass), Rick Sheppard (programming), Debra Killings, Lisette Titi (background vocals). Producers: Dallas Austin (tracks 1-2, 10, 15); Dallas Austin, Colin Wolfe (track 3); Tim Kelley, Bob Robinson (tracks 4-5, 8-9,12); Colin Wolfe (track 6); Arnold Hennings (tracks 7, 14, 16); SoulShock, Karlin (track 11); Daryl Simmons (track 13). Engineers: Leslie Brathwaite (tracks 1-2, 10, 12, 15); Kevin Parker, Leslie Brathwaite (track 3); Leslie Brathwaite, Scott Little (track 4); Leslie Brathwaite, Brian Smith (track 5); Alvin Speights, Leslie Brathwaite (track 6); Alvin Speights (track 7); Brian Smith, Darin Prindle (track 8); Darin Prindle (track 9); Jay Lean, Brian Smith, SoulShock (track 11); Thom "T.K." Kidd (track 13); Michael Patterson (track 14); Ron Gresham (track 16). Recorded at D.A.R.P. Studios, Studio LaCoCo and Doppler Studios, Atlanta, Georgia; Pure Studio, Los Angeles, California. Samples include "Back Seat Of My Jeep" (as performed by LL Cool J), "Spoonin' Rap" (as performed by Sugar Hill Gang), and "Cutie Pie" (as performed by One Way). In the ever-expanding school of teenage artists, Monica proves to be far ahead of her classmates. Toni Braxton-like vocals impress her adult audience, while the ghetto-driven music keeps her connected to her peers. Debuting with MISS THANG, Monica seizes the ground that other R&-wanna-B singers have barely trod. MISS THANG breathed life back into the career-breaking smash single, "Don't Take It Personal." The album includes both that song and its remix, which combines the hit with Monica's interpretation of Jermaine Jackson's song of the same name. And while some seem to overdose on remakes, Monica keeps the covers to just one, the S.O.S. Band's "Tell Me If You Still Care." Although MISS THANG is colored with timeless ballads such as the Stacy Lattisaw-esque "Before You Walk Out Of My Life," songs like "Angel" show that Monica is also capable of a '90's sound. Her producers, including such prominent hit-makers as Dallas Austin, SoulShock, Tim Kelley and Bob Robinson, combine smooth grooves with brief elements of hip-hop. "Let's Straighten It Out," a duet with Usher that was originally recorded for the PANTHER soundtrack, is musically reminiscent of old-school R&B and sports a chorus from an old Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth song. Backed by Queen Latifah's Flavor Unit Management, Monica promises to keep you tuned to all 16 cuts of MISS THANG. SKU: 1016959

Baduizm Live
LIVE includes covers of Chaka Khan ("Stay"), Roy Ayers ("Searchin'") and a medley of Heatwave's "Boogie Nights" and The Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long." Personnel: Erykah Badu (vocals); Norman "Keys" Hurt (piano); Hubert Eaves IV (bass); Charles "Poogie" Bell (drums); Joyce M. Strong, Karen Bernod, Chonita "N'Dambi" Gilbert (background vocals). Engineers: Kenny Ortiz, Gordon Mack, Norman "Keys" Hurt. Recorded live at Sony Music Studios, New York, New York. LIVE was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best R&B Album. "Tyrone" was nominated for the 1999Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. With her debut album, Erykah Badu exploded onto the R&B scene, quickly achieving iconic status lofty enough to displace Mary J. Blige as the reigning queen of modern soul. On this live recording, she makes it clear that her talent is not bound to studio chicanery and expensive production. Throughout LIVE, Badu exhibits the intensely soulful yet artfully restrained vocal style that has made her such a runaway success. On her own tunes such as "On & On" and "Apple Tree" as well as distinctive interpretations of Chaka Khan's "Stay" and Heatwave's "Boogie Nights" she evinces an authority that is as enthralling as it is unquestionable. My Life
Personnel includes: Mary J. Blige, Keith Murray (vocals); Chucky Thompson, Herb Middleton (various instruments); "Bassy" Bob Brockmann (strings, keyboards, programming); Regina Carter, Diane Monroe, Lesa Terry (violin); Eileen Folson (cello); Gloria Agostini (harp); "Prince" Charles Alexander (flute, piccolo, tenor saxophone); Mark "Led" Ledford, Bruce Purse (trumpet); Lenny Underwood (piano); Victor Bailey (bass); Kevin "K-Dog" Johnson (drums); LaTonya J. Blige, Faith Evans, Big Bub (background vocals); JoJo Hailey, K-Ci Hailey. Producers include: Chucky Thompson, Sean "Puffy" Combs, Nashiem Myrick, Herb Middleton, Mr. Dalvin. Engineers include: Nashiem Myrick, Tony Maserati, Rich Travali. Recorded at Sound On Sound Recording Studio, Axis Studios, Daddy's House, The Hit Factory and Clinton Recording Studios, New York, New York. MY LIFE was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. The immediate success of her triple-platinum debut WHAT'S THE 411? put Mary J. Blige in a singular class as a soul-hop visionary, and opened the door for other hip-hop-influenced R&B acts. Yet as the follow-up approached, the nature of her talent began to be questioned, and the strength of her debut became an obstacle. If Blige heard all those rumors, she must've decided that musical revenge is the best payback of all. Thus, MY LIFE comes across as another ground-breaking venture, linking R&B's new and old schools, filling the airwaves with delightful harmonies AND hip-hop samples. When Blige connects with her music's roots, she doesn't pussy-foot around soul's perimeters searching for eligible influences--so "You Bring Me Joy," "My Life" and "Be Happy" sample such luminaries as BarryWhite, Roy Ayers and Curtis Mayfield, respectively. The reconstruction of the Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long" is (Mary Jane) Blige's shout-out to the funky '80s, while "Don't Go" is a feminist retort to Guy's "Goodbye." Even though much of the album's musical direction is steered by producers Sean "Puffy" Combs and Chucky Thompson, Blige is the dominant songwriter here. And that's the main reason MY LIFE turns out to be such a statement of purpose--a 17-song diary full of Blige's life, love, and struggles in defending her title as the queen of hip-hop soul. Midnight Moonlight And Magic (The Very Best Of Henry Mancini) [Remastered]
Full title: Midnight, Moonlight & Magic: The Very Best Of Henry Mancini. Producers: Joe Reisman, Dick Peirce, Simon Rady, Steve Sholes. Compilation producers: Didier C. Deutsch, Darcy M. Proper. Recorded between 1959 & 1977. Includes liner notes by Didier C. Deutsch. Henry Mancini was one of the best American soundtrack composers of the 1950s and '60s (and in fact did solid work up until the end of his career). Nevertheless, he remains best known for impossibly catchy little tunes like "The Pink Panther Theme," "Baby Elephant Walk" (a tune you've heard hundreds of times even if you didn't know what it was called), and the drop-dead-cool twang-guitar instrumental "Peter Gunn," not to mention the immortal "Moon River." All of these and more are collected on MIDNIGHT MOONLIGHT & MAGIC: THE VERY BEST OF HENRY MANCINI, a compilation that makes a strong case for Mancini not only as a great soundtrack composer, but as a pop craftsman of the highest order, especially when he was working with his frequent collaborator Johnny Mercer. Ennio Morricone and the like might have greater hipster credibility, and former Mancini pianist John Williams might have his eclipsed his mentor in terms of box office receipts, but you probably don't find yourself singing their tunes in the shower likeyou do with Mancini's.
