Grant Lee Buffalo: Grant Lee Phillips (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Paul Kimble (vocals, piano, bass); Joey Peters (drums, percussion). Recorded at Machine Elf, North Hollywood, California and Brilliant Studios, San Francisco, California. The California-based trio Grant Lee Buffalo emerged with one of the most confident and accomplished debuts of the 1990s with FUZZY (1993). Singer and lyricist Grant Lee Phillips paints visions of a mythic America that recall the Band, while the interplay between whomping guitar chords and gentle acoustic sounds is reminiscent of another Canadian import who seems quintessentially American: Neil Young. But with all their classic influences, the group makes their own very individual sound, creating unique, sepia-tinged portraits littered with such images of Americana as the boot of John Wilkes Booth and Jackie Wilson's lonely teardrops. FUZZY teems with fine songs. The urgent opener "The Shining Hour," makes the most of a simple skiffle beat and a lonely piano as it traipses from the Civil War to Al Capone and back to King Tut. On the plaintive title track, Philips moves from a hushed lower register to an aching, Lennon-esque falsetto in a tale of hurt featuring searing slide guitar. The easygoing story-song "Dixie Drug Store" which sounds like Bob Dylan's "Isis" re-imagined in New Orleans, segues into the snarling "America Snoring." "Stars and Stripes" and"The Hook" are sublime and unsettling gems. A stunning first record. SKU: 6421374

Images [Digipak]
Personnel: Kenny Barron (piano); Anne Drummond (flute, alto flute); Stefon Harris (vibraphone); Kiyoshi Kitagawa (double bass); Kim Thompson (drums). Recording information: Systems Two Studios, Brooklyn, New York (10/2003). Hard-bop pianist Kenny Barron has been a "musician's musician" for decades, playing behind such towering figures as Dizzy Gilles pie, Yusef Lateef, Stan Getz, and Freddie Hubbard. But in the 1990s, Barron began to take center stage, leading mostly trios through a series of albums that established him as a fine composer of intricate but madly swinging tunes. On IMAGES, he's assembled a somewhat unusual lineup, dispensing with any reeds or brass--just piano, flute, vibes, bass, and drums. The result is a set of bright, deceptively easygoing straight-ahead jazz--imagine the Modern Jazz Quartet after a long vacation in Brazil, where they drank lots of coffee. While this album seems mellow on first listen, there's a lot going on under the surface: sharp time-signature changes (a la Dave Brubeck), breakneck tempos, Brazilian undertones, and complex, darting but always pretty melodies. Not to overlook the soloing; Barron consistently dazzles with hislean, Thelonious Monk-tinged style, Stefon Harris's vibes glisten like morning sunlight, and Anne Drummond's flute is both soothing and spirited simultaneously. IMAGES is recommended to not only Barron and jazz-piano fans, but those who think music can't be intensely artistic and accessible at once. SKU: 6563855

Bare (Limited Edition/+DVD)
Personnel: Annie Lennox (vocals, guitar, keyboards, programming); David Rainger, Tim Cansfield (guitar); Peter-John Vettesse (keyboards, drums); Steve Sidelnyk (programming); David Sinclair Whitaker; Pro Arte Orchestra. Recorded at The Aquarium, London, England. Includes liner notes by Annie Lennox. A true pop diva, Annie Lennox is a lady who doesn't like to be rushed. BARE is her third solo album in 11 years, and the first to contain new material since her first solo outing in 1992. Not to worry, though; she's still the same Annie you know and possibly love. Her songs are slowly, elegantly unfolding amalgams of pop and slow-jam R&B, and her strong, pliable voice fairly drips with emotional pain. As on her breakthrough record DIVA, Lennox is an expert in the area of the torch song, laying out her heartbreak on a gossamer bed of sound surrounded by feathery pillows of strings and synthesizers. Whether or not you take the strikingly solipsistic liner notes seriously, it's easy to empathize with the anguish Lennox so stylishly expresses throughout BARE. Even when she lays all her cards on the table with "The Saddest Song I've Got," you feel pretty certain that she's still got more tricks up her sleeve that she hasn't even used yet. SKU: 1083771

Falling Into You
Personnel includes: Celine Dion (vocals); Gary "Headman" Hasse (conductor, bass); Paul Buckmaster (conductor); Aldo Nova (guitar, synthesizer, drums, percussion, background vocals); Jeff Smallwood, Ottmar Liebert (acoustic guitar); Steve Farris (electric guitar, cavaquinho); Tim Pierce, Eddie Martinez, Michael Thompson, Russ DeSalvo, Andre Coutu, Chris Taylor, Basile Leroux, Patrice Tison (guitar); David Foster (piano, keyboards); Roy Bittan (piano); Jeff Bova (keyboards, synthesized bass, programming); Jimmy Bralower (drums, percussion); Sue Ann Carwell, Carl Carwell (background vocals). Producers include: JimSteinman, David Foster, Rick Nowels, Billy Steinberg, Ric Wake. Engineers inlcude: Steven Rinkoff, Felipe Elgueta, Humberto Gatica. FALLING INTO YOU won the 1997 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and Best Pop Album. "Because You Loved Me," written by Diane Warren, won the 1997 Grammy for Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture Or For Television. "Because You Loved Me" was also nominated for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. With a powerful set of pipes and some killer romantic ballads, Celine Dion is back in full force on this much-anticipated disc. The woman who previously hit it huge in the U.S. with 1991's "Beauty And The Beast" knows how to belt out a song, and then some. FALLING INTO YOU is full of lovely pop ballads, big production and soaring chord changes. Throw in some stadium-ready guitar parts, and it becomes definitive "power love" music. These combined elements help propel the grandiose "Because You Loved Me," among the biggest pure pop hits of early 1996. Dion also manages to achieve a certain level of soul, particularly on "Make You Happy," a slow, funky number with a catchy chorus. But "Declaration of Love" perhaps sums up the singer's style best: upbeat, up front, not quite rockin' but not wimpy either. She's a singer with a big, soaring soprano and a real knack for her chosen genre. Her fans won't be disappointed with this effort. SKU: 1001332

Beneath The Country Underdog
Full performer name: Kelly Hogan & The Pine Valley Cosmonauts. Personnel includes: Kelly Hogan (vocals); Jon Langford, Andy Hopkins (vocals, guitar); Edith Frost (vocals); Celine (guitar, mandolin, fiddle); Jon Rauhouse (pedal steel guitar); Tom Ray (acoustic & electric basses); Steve Goulding (drums); Robbie Fulks, Ana Egge, John Wesley Harding (background vocals). Recorded at King Size Sounds Labs, Chicago, Illinois in 1999. Singer Kelly Hogan has been in the bands The Jody Grind and the Rock*A*Teens, and has sung with John Wesley Harding and The Mekons. This, her second solo album (her first was 1996's WHISTLE THAT ONLY DOGS CAN HEAR), is a terrific amalgam of country and late-'60s Southern R&B and gospel. Hogan's voice is a warm, full-bodied mix of Dusty Springfield and Tammy Wynette, soulfully committed and straightforward. The program consists of well-chosen covers and Hogan originals--highlights include Johnny Paycheck's honky-tonk "(It's A Mighty Thin Line) Between Love And Hate,"Stephen Merrit's eerie Lee Hazlewood-like "Papa Was A Rodeo," and a truly affecting version of The Band's "Whispering Pines." The musicians--including members of the Waco Brothers--are as on-the-money as the Muscle Shoals posse that backed Dusty and Aretha. BENEATH THE COUNTRY UNDERDOG is 2000's answer to 1969's DUSTY IN MEMPHIS and FROM ELVIS IN MEMPHIS. SKU: 1072095

Height Of Callousness, The (Limited Edition)
Spineshank: Jonny Santos (vocals); Souren "Mike" Sarkisyan (guitar); Rob Garcia (bass, background vocals); Tommy Decker (drums, programming). Producers: GGGarth, Tommy Decker, Mike Sarkisyan. Recorded at Mushroom Studios, Vancouver, Canada. Spineshank has an ax to grind; hopefully it won't end up in your face. Sepultura and Fear Factory are the touchstones here, and the best of both bands is appropriated:cookie monster vocals are present and correct, the drums pound (in the case of "Cyanide 2600," there's a palpable jungle influence that's effective in the extreme), and energy and angst levels are turned up to 11. "Never wanted this life because it's meaningless," they chant, in a strangely infectious way on "Seamless," leaving the casual listener wondering how long they can keep this level of torment up. Ripping through songs such as the title track and "Asthmatic," with lyrics that castigate enemies both real and imagined, the band sounds powerful and focused throughout--just be glad it's not you they're focused on. Includes liner notes by Steffan Chirazi. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Feted by bikers, respected by punks, Motorhead exemplified rock's outlaw chic. On Ace Of Spades their speed-metal attack exploded with unparalleled fury. Thrashing guitars and primitive drums underpinned vocalist/bassist Lemmy, whose blooded-throat roar enhances the trio's aggression. Mind-numbingly basic and deafeningly loud, they savage rock's pomp and circumstance, rivalling 'Louie Louie' for simplicity and excitement. Chock-full of anthems for the dispossessed (witness '(We Are) The Road Crew'), Ace Of Spades is a classic of its genre. Motorhead exude the same cartoon personaeas the Ramones, and as a result inspire a similar affection. SKU: 1054529

Turn On The Bright Lights
Interpol: Carlos D., Daniel Kessler, Paul Banks, Samuel Fogarino. To make music marked distinctly of a specific period that's somehow so compelling as to be timeless is no mean feat. Interpol initially sounds as if they must have been roaming about Manchester as the '70s screamed to a close, yet they emerged across the ocean in New York City some two decades-plus later. Combining the insistent drone of Joy Division with the dreamy melodies of the Chameleons, the fire of Mission Of Burma, and an occasional jagged edge a la The Fall, the foursome inconceivably manage to defy anachronism on their debut full-length TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS. Just how they do it is indefinable, perhaps it's just a trick ofthe light, or the life that breathes gloomily, radiantly throughout, but it's undeniable. Vocals which fall somewhere between Ian Curtis's plaintive, edge-of-oblivion wail and the winking, laconic drawl of James's Tim Booth, ripping uncompromisingly through unpredictable, unforgettable lamentations from the reflective ("NYC") to the imploring ("PDA"). When the darkly etched, implosive, mournful lyrics poke out as they do on the unrelenting "Obstacle 1" ("she puts the weights into my little heart and she gets in my room and she tears it apart"), the hook is set for an important debut by a band that portends to be around a while. Greatest Hits...So Far, The
Public Image Ltd. includes: Johnny Lydon (vocals, drums); Keith Levene (guitar, keyboards, drums); John McGeoch (guitar); Jah Wobble, Allan Dias (bass); Bruce Smith (drums, percussion, programming); Martin Atkins, Tony Williams (drums). Producers: Public Image Ltd, Tony Berg, Stephen Hague, Gary Langan, John Lyndon, Bill Laswell, Martin Atkins. Originally released on Virgin Records. The trail of Public Image Limited is littered with brilliant shards of song, and GREATEST HITSis the perfect introduction to the band's varied sounds. This collection covers PIL's early nods toward punk rock--in "Public Image," where singer John Lydon's snarls, "You never listen to a word that I said"--and several bite-sized chunks of SECOND EDITION's disturbing art-rock. The disc also features the band's stunning flirtation with dance-chart success, "(This is Not a) Love Song," and their smooth transition into alternative rock ("Seattle"), and beyond ("Warrior.") With stops along the way at two of PIL's best songs, "The Flowers of Romance" and "Rise," GREATEST HITS touches on nearly all of the band's high points. "Don't Ask Me" even caps off the record with a cheerful admonishment to be sure to recycle! This from the man who wrote "Death Disco" for his dying mother and swore, in "Home," that "Better days will never be." SKU: 1003747

Private Elvis
PRIVATE ELVIS is a compilation of home recordings from 1956-66, two-thirds of which is previously unreleased. Compilation producers: Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Includes liner notes by Ernst Jorgensen and Colin Escott. Elvis Presley is undoubtedly the artist with the largest posthumous catalog in the world. In addition to the countless recordings he made during his long, prolific career, countless repackagings of old material and the occasional bit of previously unreleased material appeared after his death. By the '90s, the bottom of the barrel had been scraped definitively dry. That's what makes THE HOME RECORDINGS such an event in the world of Elvis. True to its title, this release contains '50s and '60s recordings of Elvis just hanging around at home banging out his favorite tunes on the piano, occasionally accompanied by friends. Many of the performances are off the cuff, with Elvis frequently cutting up with his pals or forgetting lyrics; but it's a treat to hear his majestic voice in such a spontaneous, intimate setting. The song selection--everything from "Mona Lisa" and "Tennessee Waltz" to "When the Saints GoMarching In"--speaks volumes about both Elvis' roots and the family tree of rock & roll. SKU: 1002234

Live At Fillmore East [Remastered]
Full title: The Allman Brothers Band At The Fillmore East. The Allman Brothers Band: Gregg Allman (vocals, piano, organ); Duane Allman (guitar, slide guitar); Dickey Betts (guitar); Berry Oakley (bass); Jai Johanny Johanson (drums, congas, timbales); Butch Trucks (drums, tympani). Additional personnel: Thom Doucette (harmonica). Recorded live at the Fillmore East, New York, New York onMarch 12-13, 1971. Originally released on Capricorn (860). The original Fillmore East album is one of the finest live documents of the rock era, capturing the original line-up of one of the 70s' tightest outfits before they were cruelly robbed of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. Taken from five 1971 performances at New York's fabled Fillmore East, the extended and effortlessly melodic workouts of 'In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed' and 'Whipping Post' remain definitive recordings. The dual guitar interplay of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts glides effortlessly over the propulsive rhythm section of Oakley and twin drummers Jaimoe and Butch Trucks, while Greg Allman's powerful blues voice and melodic keyboard work provides the icing on the cake. Man And The Legend, The (1985 Re-Recordings)
Personnel: Carl Perkins (vocals, guitar); Wes Henley, Murray Kelium (guitar); David Sea (harmonica, saxophone); Lee McAlpine (piano); Paul Hollawell, David Floyd, Alan Kaufman (keyboards); Gregg Perkins (bass); Stan Perkins (background vocals). Recorded at Quadraphonic Studios, Nashville, Tennessee in 1985. Originally released as a double LP in 1985. First generation rockabilly legend Perkins remakes several of his own hits here, and pays tribute to his contemporaries, includingElvis ("Hound Dog" "Jailhouse Rock"), Fats Domino ("I'm Walkin'"), Little Richard ("Lucille," "Slippin' and Slidin'"), Chuck Berry ("Maybelline," "Roll Over Beethoven"), and Gene Vincent ("Be Bop a Lula"). Perkins himself sounds half his age, both vocally and guitar-wise, and the modernized arrangements here are generally fine, although the harmonica and sax are not instruments one automatically associates with rockabilly. This album will never replace Perkins' groundbreaking '50s Sun sides, of course, but if you want to hear Carl in stereo, this isn't a bad way to go. SKU: 1038502

Madhouse - The Very Best Of Anthrax
Full title: Madhouse: The Very Best Of Anthrax. Anthrax: Joey Belladonna (vocals); Dan Spitz, Scott Ian (guitar); Frank Bello (bass); Charlie Benante (drums). Additional personnel includes: Public Enemy. Producers: Mark Dodson, Candy Canedy, Eddie Kramer, Paul Hamingson, Anthrax. Compilation producer: Mike Ragogna. Includes liner notes by Gerry Miller. MADHOUSE: THE VERY BEST OF ANTHRAX chronicles the groups work from 1985 through 1991. The influential New York-based thrash metal band was one of the first rock outfits to experiment with rap (predating the whole "rap metal" craze of the late '90s by a decade). This is borne out by suchtracks as "Bring the Noise," a Public Enemy cover featuring cameos by Chuck D and Flavor Flav. But Anthrax is best remembered as a true heavy metal band, and such standouts as "Madhouse," "Indians," "Belly of the Beast," and a metallic re-working of Joe Jackson's "Got the Time" prove it. Although the group would go on to issue more material throughout the '90s and beyond, MADHOUSE: THE VERY BEST OF collects nearly all of Anthrax's definitive cuts. SKU: 1062885

Downward Spiral, The
Nine Inch Nails: Trent Reznor (vocals, various instruments). Additional personnel: Danny Lohner, Adrian Belew (guitar); Flood (synthesizer, programming); Andy Kubiszewski, Chris Vrenna, StephenPerkins (drums). Engineers: Sean Beavan, Chris Vrenna, Alan Moulder. Recorded at Le Pig, Beverly Hills, California; The Record Plant A&M Studios, Los Angeles, California. THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL was nominated for a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. "Hurt" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. Beginning with a barrage of gunshots and then exploding into a furious sonic onslaught, this record is like taking a hellride on the back of a bullet. Blistering recklessly toward its target on a wave of guitar, synthesizer, treated vocal, and beat Beat BEAT, THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL is like a virtual reality version of ATOMIZER (see Big Black) or even CONSUMER REVOLT (see also Cop Shoot Cop). It thrashes, it roars, it even retreats on occasion--pausing to reflect on its destruction (perhaps this bullet has a conscience). But it keeps pushing forward, toward its target, curdling into your ears and exploding inside your head. Dig the pain. SKU: 1003348
