The California-based trio Grant Lee Buffalo emerged with one of the most confident and accomplished debuts of the 1990s with FUZZY (1993). Singer and lyricist Grant Lee Phillips paints visions of a mythic America that recall the Band, while the interplay between whomping guitar chords and gentle acoustic sounds is reminiscent of another Canadian import who seems quintessentially American: Neil Young. But with all their classic influences, the group makes their own very individual sound, creating unique, sepia-tinged portraits littered with such images of Americana as the boot of John Wilkes Booth and Jackie Wilson's lonely teardrops.
FUZZY teems with fine songs. The urgent opener "The Shining Hour," makes the most of a simple skiffle beat and a lonely piano as it traipses from the Civil War to Al Capone and back to King Tut. On the plaintive title track, Philips moves from a hushed lower register to an aching, Lennon-esque falsetto in a tale of hurt featuring searing slide guitar. The easygoing story-song "Dixie Drug Store" which sounds like Bob Dylan's "Isis" re-imagined in New Orleans, segues into the snarling "America Snoring." "Stars and Stripes" and"The Hook" are sublime and unsettling gems. A stunning first record.

Hard-bop pianist Kenny Barron has been a "musician's musician" for decades, playing behind such towering figures as Dizzy Gilles pie, Yusef Lateef, Stan Getz, and Freddie Hubbard. But in the 1990s, Barron began to take center stage, leading mostly trios through a series of albums that established him as a fine composer of intricate but madly swinging tunes. On IMAGES, he's assembled a somewhat unusual lineup, dispensing with any reeds or brass--just piano, flute, vibes, bass, and drums. The result is a set of bright, deceptively easygoing straight-ahead jazz--imagine the Modern Jazz Quartet after a long vacation in Brazil, where they drank lots of coffee.
While this album seems mellow on first listen, there's a lot going on under the surface: sharp time-signature changes (a la Dave Brubeck), breakneck tempos, Brazilian undertones, and complex, darting but always pretty melodies. Not to overlook the soloing; Barron consistently dazzles with hislean, Thelonious Monk-tinged style, Stefon Harris's vibes glisten like morning sunlight, and Anne Drummond's flute is both soothing and spirited simultaneously. IMAGES is recommended to not only Barron and jazz-piano fans, but those who think music can't be intensely artistic and accessible at once.

A true pop diva, Annie Lennox is a lady who doesn't like to be rushed. BARE is her third solo album in 11 years, and the first to contain new material since her first solo outing in 1992. Not to worry, though; she's still the same Annie you know and possibly love. Her songs are slowly, elegantly unfolding amalgams of pop and slow-jam R&B, and her strong, pliable voice fairly drips with emotional pain.
As on her breakthrough record DIVA, Lennox is an expert in the area of the torch song, laying out her heartbreak on a gossamer bed of sound surrounded by feathery pillows of strings and synthesizers. Whether or not you take the strikingly solipsistic liner notes seriously, it's easy to empathize with the anguish Lennox so stylishly expresses throughout BARE. Even when she lays all her cards on the table with "The Saddest Song I've Got," you feel pretty certain that she's still got more tricks up her sleeve that she hasn't even used yet.

FALLING INTO YOU is full of lovely pop ballads, big production and soaring chord changes. Throw in some stadium-ready guitar parts, and it becomes definitive "power love" music. These combined elements help propel the grandiose "Because You Loved Me," among the biggest pure pop hits of early 1996. Dion also manages to achieve a certain level of soul, particularly on "Make You Happy," a slow, funky number with a catchy chorus. But "Declaration of Love" perhaps sums up the singer's style best: upbeat, up front, not quite rockin' but not wimpy either. Sepultura and Fear Factory are the touchstones here, and the best of both bands is appropriated:cookie monster vocals are present and correct, the drums pound (in the case of "Cyanide 2600," there's a palpable jungle influence that's effective in the extreme), and energy and angst levels are turned up to 11.
"Never wanted this life because it's meaningless," they chant, in a strangely infectious way on "Seamless," leaving the casual listener wondering how long they can keep this level of torment up. Ripping through songs such as the title track and "Asthmatic," with lyrics that castigate enemies both real and imagined, the band sounds powerful and focused throughout--just be glad it's not you they're focused on.

To make music marked distinctly of a specific period that's somehow so compelling as to be timeless is no mean feat. Interpol initially sounds as if they must have been roaming about Manchester as the '70s screamed to a close, yet they emerged across the ocean in New York City some two decades-plus later. Combining the insistent drone of Joy Division with the dreamy melodies of the Chameleons, the fire of Mission Of Burma, and an occasional jagged edge a la The Fall, the foursome inconceivably manage to defy anachronism on their debut full-length TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS. The influential New York-based thrash metal band was one of the first rock outfits to experiment with rap (predating the whole "rap metal" craze of the late '90s by a decade). This is borne out by suchtracks as "Bring the Noise," a Public Enemy cover featuring cameos by Chuck D and Flavor Flav. But Anthrax is best remembered as a true heavy metal band, and such standouts as "Madhouse," "Indians," "Belly of the Beast," and a metallic re-working of Joe Jackson's "Got the Time" prove it. Although the group would go on to issue more material throughout the '90s and beyond, MADHOUSE: THE VERY BEST OF collects nearly all of Anthrax's definitive cuts.

Beginning with a barrage of gunshots and then exploding into a furious sonic onslaught, this record is like taking a hellride on the back of a bullet. Blistering recklessly toward its target on a wave of guitar, synthesizer, treated vocal, and beat Beat BEAT, THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL is like a virtual reality version of ATOMIZER (see Big Black) or even CONSUMER REVOLT (see also Cop Shoot Cop). It thrashes, it roars, it even retreats on occasion--pausing to reflect on its destruction (perhaps this bullet has a conscience). But it keeps pushing forward, toward its target, curdling into your ears and exploding inside your head. Dig the pain.
