Down To Earth
Initial pressings of DOWN TO EARTH will include regular audio tracks as well as multimedia computer files. The Enhanced portion includes live perfomance footage of Ozzy Osbourne performing with Randy Rhodes. Personnel: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Tim Palmer (acoustic & electric guitars, keyboards, drums, background vocals); Zakk Wylde, Danny Saber (guitar); Michael Railo (keyboards, background vocals); Robert Trujillo (bass); Mike Bordin (drums). Recorded at Jim HensonStudios, Hollywood, California. Six years of waiting for a new album had impatient Ozzy fans biting the heads off of live animals, but DOWN TO EARTH finally arrived. Whereas OZZMOSIS may have harkened back to Ozzy's early days of Black Sabbath, EARTH is unmistakably solo Ozzy. First single "Gets Me Through" is a radio-friendly thank you to his fans in which he exclaims "I'm not the anti-Christ or the iron man." The piano intro is reminiscent of "No More Tears." Piano is also featured in "Dreamer" and "Running Out Of Time," two of The Ozzman's most well crafted ballads. Ozzy maturing? Yes, but in a GOOD way. Things get heavier on "No Easy Way Out," featuring the driven guitar wizardry of longtime collaborator Zakk Wylde. Joe Holmes, Ozzy's road guitarist of recent years lends his writing talents to "That I Never Had" and "Junkie" (a midtempo rocker telling the tale of a desperate addict). "You Know (Part 1)" is a wonderful acoustic cut about Ozzy's fatherhood role. Anchored by the fantastic rhythm section of Robert Trujillo and Mike Bordin, the playing on EARTH is exceptionally tight. Tim Palmer's production steers Osbourne in a melodic direction, as the album's use of strings, synth, and background vocals complements some of Ozzy's best vocal performances in years. SKU: 1067212

Map Of The World, A (Original Soundtrack)
Original score composed by Pat Metheny. Personnel includes: Pat Metheny (piano, keyboards, acoustic guitar); Gil Goldstein (organ); Steve Rodby (acoustic bass); David Samuels (percussion). Recorded in February 1999. Guitarist Pat Metheny's exceptional compositional skills reached another plateau with the beautiful score for the film A MAP OF THE WORLD. Here, with a full orchestral accompaniment, Metheny explores the pastoral sound of the acoustic guitar and coaxes from it some of the most emotionally rich music he has ever composed. Those looking for the guitarist's signature modern Brazilian-flavored electric style will not find it here, nor are there any strains of Metheny's traditional jazz leanings as he fully develops a new side to his already plentiful musical gifts. Ranging from deeply moving solo lines with impressionistic shadings to sweeping pastoral jaunts that build to tremendous heights of grandeur, Metheny captures the spirit ofthe rural setting of the film, drawing on the sounds of his childhood. On its own, the music emphasizes the exceptional care with which Metheny undertakes his art, gently caressing the music from the instrument until it reaches its full potential. SKU: 1030387

Way We Walk Vol.1, The (Genesis Live/The Shorts)
Genesis: Phil Collins (vocals, drums); Mike Rutherford (guitar, bass); Tony Banks (keyboards). Additional personnel: Daryl Stuermer (guitar, bass); Chester Thompson (drums). Producers: Nick Davis, Robert Colby, Genesis. Released as part of a two-volume live set, THE WAY WE WALK, VOL. 1 was recorded during the band's 1992 world tour. Having started out as an over-the-top, theatrical art-rock band, Genesis had become a tireless pop machine by the early '90s. THE SHORTS represents the facet of the band that enabled Genesis to score 16 Top 40 hits in a 12-year span. The oldest songs on this collection are "That's All" and "Mama," a pair of songs from the band's 1983 self-titled album. The rest of the set is divided between hits from 1986's INVISIBLE TOUCH and WE CAN'T DANCE, the albumGenesis was touring behind at the time. The resulting mix is of upbeat numbers ("Land of Confusion"), hopelessly romantic ballads ("In Too Deep," "Throwing It All Away"), and more adult-themed material dealing with father-son splits ("No Son of Mine") and the hypocrisy of televangelists ("Jesus He Knows Me"). Love Peace And Nappiness
Lost Boyz: Mr. Cheeks, Freaky Tah, Pretty Lou, Spigg-Nice. Additional personnel includes: Redman, A+, Canibus, Aarion Pope, Luv Bug Starski, Queens Most Wanted, King Keiwanee, Da Blak Pharoah (rap vocals); Ed Miller (spoken vocals); Tony Prendatt (various instruments); Alex Andino, Jr. (guitar, bass); Stanley Brown, Avon Marshall (keyboards); Bink Dawg (drums, programming); Terrence Dudley, Mr. Sexxx, DJ Ron G, Ike Lee, DJ Rob Alphonse, Glenn S.O.N. Faide (programming); Robert "Storm" Johnson (background vocals). Recorded at Unique Studios, New York, New York and Honey Comb Hideout, Brooklyn, New York. Producers include: Easy Mo Bee, Clark Kent, Ike Lee, Mr. Sexx, Tim Dawg. At a time whenthe majority of hip-hop anthems focus on packin' gats and loadin' clips, the Lost Boyz have earned respect by putting the "party" back into rap music. On their follow-up to LEGAL DRUG MONEY, the Jamaica, Queens natives remain one of the few rap groups who seem to remember where hip-hop originated. LOVE, PEACE & NAPPINESS displays their ability to deliver radio-friendly mainstream rap without selling out their core audience. Interesting stories, catchy choruses, and bangin' tracks make this an album that can be enjoyed from beginning to end. Lead rapper Mr. Cheeks proves to be a master of storytelling, especially on "Me & My Crazy World," where he describes the feeling of being in love with two women. "Beasts From The East," which features Redman, teen rapper A+ and newcomer Canibus, has a hard-core feel and adds grit to the album, while the title track takes it back to the old school with a sample of the classic Slick Rick song, "Hey Young World." Remain In Light
Talking Heads: David Byrne (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, percussion); Jerry Harrison (guitar, keyboards, bass, percussion); Tina Weymouth (keyboards, bass, percussion); Chris Frantz (keyboards, drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Nona Hendryx (vocals); Adrian Belew (guitar); Brian Eno (vocals, keyboards, bass); Robert Palmer, Jon Hassell. Recorded at Compass Point Studios, Nassau, The Bahamas, and Sigma Sound, New York, New York. Though the previous album FEAR OF MUSIC provided a bit of foreshadowing, Talking Heads fans could never have guessed what was in store for them with therelease of REMAIN IN LIGHT. A visionary work of innovation and inspiration, it's arguably one of the finest albums of the 1980s. The band leaves behind the two-guitars-over-a-quirky-rock-beat ethic of their previous work, adoping a funky, modal approach. Abandoning traditional song form and chord progressions, the tunes here are built around layers of overdubbed keyboard, guitar and percussion parts that weave around each other in an almost fugue-like manner, relying on the adding and subtracting of elements in the mix for dynamics, instead of on chord changes and structural development. It was a radical approach for a rock band, and it's reflected in the lyrics as well. Byrne abandons his urban paranoia of old in favor of a more spiritual, third world-influenced style of writing. Adrian Belew injects some grit with his postpunk-psychedelia guitar work (suggestive of his upcoming work with King Crimson, as is the overall sound of REMAIN IN LIGHT). This one is of the ages. Licensed To Ill
The Beastie Boys: Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz, Adam "MCA" Yauch, Mike "Mike D" Diamond (rap vocals). Additional personnel includes: Kerry King (guitar). Wholly original, the first and the best rap group to make the genre universally palatable. These Brooklyn boys succeed with a combination of tremendously exciting backgrounds, from straight riff metal (on 'Rhymin' & Stealin'' and 'She's Crafty') to sample ('The New Style'). Having learnt their art by observing rather than participating while at NYU, they sound street-cred, eventhough some members are positively middle-class. The Volkswagen badge-stealing craze was unknowingly started by the band, who wore the pendant merely in order to mock the hippies who had worn the ban-the-bomb medallion. The rap album for people who think they don't like rap. SKU: 1006616

Greetings From LA
By 1972, Buckley had grown so disenchanted with the music business and its commercial expectations that he composed this perverse opus as a mockery of that sleazy, bottom-line world. Bitterness seems to fuel many of the songs, which describe the sordid state L.A. had gotten into by the early '70s, stomping the already rotting corpse of flower power still further into the ground. Gone was Buckley the tender folkpoet, and in his place was a leering, libidinous lounge lizard who plied a slick funk-rock designed as a backdrop to makeout scenes. Tunes like "Move WithMe" and "Get on Top" leave even less to the imagination than your favorite R. Kelly song. This being a Tim Buckley album, though, the songs are full of assured swing and deft melodic sense. Needless to say, Buckley sings the hell out of every tune, his voice gliding and swooping elegantly over the music. He may have lost his innocence by this point, but he clearly hadn't lost his touch. Gods And Generals (CD+DVD Set)
Includes a bonus limited edition DVD. Original score composed by John Frizell and Randy Edelman. Producers: John Frizell, Randy Edelman, Jeffrey Lesser, Jack Frost. Includes liner notes by Ronald F. Maxwell. The Soundtrack for director Ronald F. Maxwell's Civil War film GODS AND GENERALS consists of a score by John Frizell and Randy Edelman, book-ended by original songs from ex-October Projectvocalist Mary Fahl and folk/rock icon Bob Dylan. The former track, "Going Home" is a haunting, Celtic-influenced piece that sounds similar to the best work of June Tabor and Maddy Prior. Dylan's contribution is a typically insightful and poignant look at a difficult topic, and lends the proceedings a quiet grandeur. Musically, "'Cross The Green Mountain" recalls his early-'70s work with Leon Russell. Frizell and Edelman's score is appropriately melancholy and sweeping, perfectly reflecting the epic proportions and painful subject matter of the film. The best tracks pair the symphony orchestra with country fiddler extraordinaire Mark O'Connor and Chieftan's frontman Paddy Mahoney, who impart an air of 19th-century authenticity. SKU: 1085080

First 10 Years, The
Personnel: Joan Baez (vocals, guitar); Bruce Langhorne (electric guitar); Russ Savakus (string bass); Peter Schickle, Grady Martin. Although this1970 compilation is called THE FIRST TEN YEARS, it largely ignores Joan Baez's first few records--see the excellent VERY EARLY JOAN for those--in favor of the folk singer's less traditional mid-to-late-'60s work. Ranging from the orchestral folk of her mid-'60s collaborations with arranger/producer Peter Schickele to solo acoustic performances of traditional folk songs and Bob Dylan covers, the 18-track collection isn't always as cohesive as it might be, but the quality is very high, and this is overall probably the best of the many compilations of Baez's '60s work for Vanguard Records. THE FIRST TEN YEARS contains no previously-unreleased or otherwise rare material. SKU: 1047092

Speak And Spell
This is Depeche Mode's first album. Depeche Mode: Andy Fletcher, Martin Gore (vocals, guitar, keyboards); David Gahan (vocals); Vince Clarke (keyboards). Recorded at Blackwing Studios, London, England. Influenced by Kraftwerk, Eno and the punk DIY ethic as it extended to synthesizers, these boys from Basildon were one of the first and most influential synth-pop bands. Along with OMD, Human League and others, Depeche Mode combined the early-'80s New Romantic aesthetic of post-Roxy Music electronics and faddish androgyny with pure pop songcraft straight outof the '60s pop-rock tradition. Theirs was a fresh sound, bubbling over with youth and enthusiasm. With the use of sequencers as well as real-time playing they constructed frothy, infectious pop/dance tunes on their effervescent debut. Vince Clarke was the musical mastermind, and his arrangements layered several melody lines over one another, eschewing full chords almost completely. Tunes like "New Life" and "Just Can't Get Enough" struck a chord with those enamored of the "New Wave" sound but ready to hear something besides electric guitars (DM initially used synths exclusively). A vastly important and influential album, SPEAK & SPELL is virtually ground zero for British synth-pop. SKU: 4125662

Saxophonist Lee Konitz has been consistently one of the most individual figures in jazz, and has excelled as both as leader and accompanist since the late '40s. He's fashioned a unique style, influenced heavily by pianist Lennie Tristano, and sufficiently so by alto legend Charlie Parker. While many jazz players find a niche and work it for the rest of their lives, Konitz has refused to stand still. He's played with a dizzying assortment of musicians, including Miles Davis, Stan Kenton, Charles Mingus, Max Roach, and Derek Bailey. This album was recorded live in a jazz club in Pittsburgh, P.A. in 1957, with players that share fine history with Konitz, like the superb "cool school" guitarist Billy Bauer. Konitz swings with blues-derived aplomb on "My Melancholy Baby." Peter Ind's bass playing is sturdy and sinuous, and the whole band sets up a swinging groove for Konitz to work out on. Some jazz critics have accusedKonitz of being "too cerebral"--listen to the driving closer, "Midway," and wonder how anyone could say that. The recording quality throughout is very good--one can hear the clinking of glasses and bottles now and again, but that just adds to the good-time ambiance. SKU: 5076046

Greatest Hits Vol.1
Personnel: Al Green (vocals); Teenie Hodges (guitar); The Memphis Strings (strings); Andrew Love, Ed Logan (tenor saxophone); James Mitchell (baritone saxophone); Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Jack Hale (trombone); Charles Hodges(organ, piano); Archie Turner, Michael Allen (piano); Leroy Hodges (bass); Howard Grimes, Al Jackson (drums, congo, bongo); Rhodes, Chalmers, Rhodes (background vocals). Recorded at Royal Recording Studios, Memphis, Tennessee. Sam Cooke's death in 1964 left a huge void in the world of soul music not filled until Al Green's breakthrough in the early '70s. Although many great male soul singers came and went in the years following Cooke's death, none came close to the smooth and creamy style that translated to consistent cross-over success. While Otis Redding was gritty and James Brown relentless, in Green's hands, R&B was sophisticated and suave. GREATEST HITS basks in a style of sultry soul that Green inherited from Cooke. Yet, Green's style owed as much to producer Willie Mitchell's delicate production as it did to the singer's pure falsetto. While not inclined to use the vast numbers of musicians that Phil Spector did, Mitchell's use of James Mitchell (no relation) and Charles Chalmer's string arrangements, the Memphis Horns and the background vocals of Rhodes, Chalmers and Rhodes gave Green's songs a full sound that wrapped itself around Green's aching emotivity. "Here I Am (Come And Take Me)" features all these elements at play, along with the crack cadence of former MG drummer Al Jackson and brothers Teenie and Charles Hodges, whose respective guitar and organ juice up the rhythm. Thematically, listening to GREATEST HITS is like thumbing through a primer on the evolution of a relationship, and the ups and downs that come with it. The despair of "Tired Of Being Alone" gives way to a fleeting affair in "Call Me (Come Back Home)." The joy Green finds in "Love And Happiness" is temporary before the pleading begins anew with "Let's Stay Together," then gets tied up with a declaration ("L-O-V-E (Love)") and a proposal ("Let's Get Married"). This Is The Modern World [Remastered]
Includes liner notes by John Reed. In 1977 punk rock was hardly the only game in town. In addition to pub-rock, the remnants of glam and the lingering, aging hippies who still tenuously held onto the charts, there was also a small group of revivalists dedicated to reviving the fashion and music of the early-'60s mod scene. Chief among these young dandies was the most creative and consistentgroup of the lot, the Jam. Led by guitar hero/boy genius Paul Weller, the Jam took the R&B influences of bands like (early Who incarnation) the High Numbers, added punk rock's manic energy, and produced an energetic-yet-raw debut album (IN THE CITY) that hinted at great things to come. By the time the second album THIS IS THE MODERN WORLD rolled around the Jam had its formula down pat. Weller's songwriting had acquired new depth, as evidenced on the title cut, "Standards," and "I Need You." Even bassist Bruce Foxton could chime in when necessary with a winner like "Don't Tell Them Your Sane." The cover of the soul classic "In the Midnight Hour" is an anomalous misfire. Nevertheless, the MODERN WORLD cemented The Jam's reputation as one of the most dynamic bands in rock & roll history. SKU: 4133605

18 'til I Die
Personnel: Bryan Adams (vocals, acoustic, electric, & 12-string guitars, harmonica, handclaps); Keith Scott (acoustic, electric, 12-string & slide guitars, electric sitar, 6-string bass); Paco De Lucia (Spanish guitar); Mutt Lange (guitar, bass); Phil Palmer (guitar); Olle Romo (piano, keyboards, castanets, pads, percussion); Michael Kamen (piano); Dave Taylor (bass); Mickey Curry (drums); The Pointless Brothers (background vocals). Le Petite Orchestre De Cannes: Edward Shearmur (conductor); Berhilde Dufoour, Ezther Biro, Laurence Rierat, Matgorzata Calvayral, Yannick Marcoul, Anne Saez, Elsa Benabdallah, Jean Marie Chavannes, Alice Pellegrin, Rachel Nativelle, Jerome Mege. Producers: Bryan Adams, Robert John "Mutt" Lange, David Foster. Recorded in Jamaica between winter 1994 and spring 1995 and Provence, France between fall 1995 and spring 1996. Originally released on A&M (540 551). "Let's Make A Night To Remember" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, and "The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You" was nominated for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. On 18 TIL I DIE, Bryan Adams abandons the MOR ballad format that made him a household name, in favor of a raw, unfettered approach. With the aid of producer Mutt Lange (who adds some guitar as well), Adams has assembled a raucous group of songs high on energy and low on gloss. The majority of the tracks on 18 TIL I DIE are powered by heavily-distorted guitar and insistent drums. In addition to his new predilection for raw-bones rockers, Adams seems to have developed an irreverent sense of humor; note the lascivious, offbeat lyrics of "The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You" and "(I Wanna Be) Your Underwear." In fact, his newfound lewdness might make this the first Bryan Adams album ever to be disapproved of by parents. Most likely, though, mom and dad will be pacified by "Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman," the soft, romantic megahit from the movie "Don Juan De Marco" that is the exception to Adams' new rocking rule. Daredevil
Original music composed by G. Revell. Comic books and hard rock are two obsessions to which plenty of kids and teens devote slavish amounts of time. So it's not surprising how well soundtracks created to accompany films about Spiderman and The X-Men have done. DAREDEVIL: THE ALBUM continues the trend. Pumped full of thundering riffs and relentless energy, these 20 cuts are by some of the biggest names in the nu metal/alt-rock world. Things start with the metallic clank of Fuel's doom-and-gloom "Won't Back Down" and end with 12 Stones' bluesy "Let Go." In between, superstars stepping up to the plate include Saliva (a soaring "Bleed For Me"), Moby (an ethereal "Evening Rain"), and Hoobastank (the lush "Right Before Your Eyes" complete with strings). Even Chad Kroeger returns from his stint on the SPIDER-MAN soundtrack, landing his bandNickelback on the DAREDEVIL soundtrack via the chugging "Learn the Hard Way." Although the thunderous industrial rock Drowning Pool/Rob Zombie team-up "The Man Without Fear" merits plenty of attention, the most pleasant surprise comes from Evanescence, whose "My Immortal" comes off like a Tori Amos outtake with its dominant piano, gorgeous string arrangements, and lead singer Amy Lee's ethereal phrasing. Spirits Rejoice
Personnel: Albert Ayler (tenor saxophone); Charles Tyler (alto saxophone); Donald Ayler (trumpet); Call Cobbs (harpsichord); Gary Peacock, Henry Grimes (double bass); Sunny Murray (percussion). Recording information: Judson Hall, New York City (09/1965). 1965's SPIRITS REJOICE, a high-energy performance recorded live at New York's Judson Hall, perfectly captures Albert Ayler's signature sound of this era. Like the earlier BELLS, the album blurs the line between composition and improvisation. The various horn players imitate each other's phrases and veer off into a cacophonous celebration, only toeventually return to the melody. Ayler used two bass players for this date, Gary Peacock and Henry Grimes, and the collaboration especially shines during "D.C." The performance also features Ayler's brother Donald (trumpet), Sunny Murray (drums), Charles Tyler (alto saxophone), and Call Cobs (harpsichord on "Angels," one of Ayler's ballads). While the fidelity of this recording is not the finest, the playing is remarkable. Songs such as "Holy Family" foreshadow the New Orleans/marching-band influence evident on ALBERT AYLER LIVE IN GREENWICH VILLAGE. If nothing else, SPIRITS REJOICE and Ayler's other records on the ESP label document his unique musical vision. We are fortunate to have them. SKU: 6511839

Essential Bill Monroe, The
All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of RCA Nashville's Essentials series. THE ESSENTIAL BILL MONROE & THE MONROE BROTHERS includes seminal recordings of Bill Monroe, both in his early duets with brother Charlie and with the earliest manifestation of his band, the Bluegrass Boys. The Monroe Brothers' records, which date from between 1936 and 1938, more clearly adhere to the traditionsof old-time heart singing, best exemplified by the Blue Sky Boys and the Delmore Brothers. On the later Bluegrass Boys' recordings, however, one hears the first rumblings of what would become classic bluegrass, complete with blistering tempos, precision fiddling and mandolin picking, and the high lonesome wail of Monroe's tenor. All twenty-five of the recordings included here offer a fascinating look at Monroe's artistic roots. Those expecting the polished bluegrass of Del McCoury or even later Monroe albums, however, should be forewarned that these recordings are both sonically primitive and roughly played. This is genuine heart music, closer in spirit to the recordings anthologized by Harry Smith for Folkways than to Ricky Skaggs. High points include a breakneck version of the fiddle tune "Katy Hill," "Cryin' Holy Unto the Lord," and the Monroe Brothers' take on "New River Train." SKU: 1015731
