Murder Ballads, The
Full title: The Murder Ballads: The Complete Collection. Former Napalm Death drummer Mick Harris traffics in the isolationist ambiance of Lull; Martyn Bates is the emotive voice of literate cult-pop duo Eyeless in Gaza. The unlikely pair--one given to terminally frigid drone, the other to impassioned, bittersweet voicings--finds common ground in folk music's most macabre tradition, the murder ballad. These ghoulish parables are awash in blood and tears, the strands of love, hate, birth, death, sin, and salvation entwined within like the roots of an ancient tree. Mothers callously kill their children, suitors slay their maidens without remorse, and fate exacts its cruel price from all. The three discs that make up THE MURDER BALLADS were originally released separately. Each album contains a set of four extended interpretations linked to a common theme. While such sinister songs as "The Cruel Mother," "Lucy Wan," and "The Bonny Hind" may be familiar to followers of traditional and revisionist folk, Harris and Bates' brilliant approach extracts every last drop of dread from the time-worn words.Harris' bleak backdrops slither, knell, and resonate while Bates sings in a mournful melodic whisper. On the third album, INCEST SONGS, Bates' vocals are subtly multi-tracked, sounding like the lament of a congregation of despairing angels. SKU: 4111819

Circus
Personnel includes: Lenny Kravitz (vocals, electric guitar, Mini-Moog, drums); Craig Ross (acoustic & electric guitar, mandolin); Henry Hirsch (Mellotron, Wurlitzer electric piano, bass); Tony Breit (bass). Recorded at Waterfront Studios, New Jersey; Chateau Des Conde, France; Compass Point Studios, Bahamas. "Rock And Roll Is Dead" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. With CIRCUS, Lenny Kravitz is four albums into a career of reinventing rock's best pieces, and flying further with them. CIRCUS is no change from this format, but proves why he's so successful at it. "Rock And Roll Is Dead" snubs alternative rock and rap acts who "can't even sing or play an instrument," while Kravitz plays guitar, bass and drums with confidence and a well-learned sense of groove. His gift for molding AOR idioms into new forms jumps on the John Bonham wagon for the heavy wallop of "Beyond The 7th Sky"; his Hendrix-ian wah-wah mixes perfectly with some Sly Stone bump-and-grind on "Tunnel Vision"; and the Beatlesque guitar on "Can't Get You Off My Mind" proves that mimicry just may be the sincerest form of flattery. There is even a hint of Stevie Wonder on "God Is Love." And though you may spot the references as if they were highlighted on a map, CIRCUS pulls it offwith precision and inspiration. The flower-power and funk melodies throughout CIRCUS stir together a different era of sounds and effects for a '90s audience. They make Kravitz's appreciation for rock's foundation down-right contagious. SKU: 1003630

Happy Woman Blues
Personnel: Lucinda Williams (vocals, acoustic guitar); Mickey White (acoustic & electric guitars); Andre Matthews (electric & slide guitars); Mickey Moody (pedal steel guitar); Malcolm Smith (fiddle, viola); Rex Bell (bass); Ira Wilkes (drums). Recorded at Sugar Hill Studios, Houston, Texas between April & June 1980. Includes liner notes by John Morthland. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Folks who discovered Lucinda Williams through rootsy folk-pop albums like 1992's SWEET OLD WORLD and 1998's CAR WHEELSON A GRAVEL ROAD might be taken aback by the Louisiana-bred singer/songwriter's first two albums, 1979's RAMBLIN' and 1980's HAPPY WOMAN BLUES. Williams' first love is acoustic country blues in the Delta tradition, with RAMBLIN' consisting of respectful covers of country blues classics and this follow-up featuring 11 Williams originals in that style. Opening with the wistful "Lafayette" and closing with the enigmatic "Sharp Cutting Wings (Song to a Poet)," HAPPY WOMAN BLUES shows that Williams' sharp eye for evocative detail and talent for powerful lyrical imagery were clearly evident even in her first songs-particularly on the gripping "Howlin' at Midnight." Williams disappeared for nine years after recording this album. When she returned, with 1989's excellent LUCINDA WILLIAMS, the stark acoustic simplicity of this album was gone. SKU: 1017446

Adema
Adema: Mark Chavez (vocals); Mike Ransom, Tim Fluckey (guitar); Dave DeRoo (bass); Kris Kohls (drums). The five pierced, tattooed, spiky-haired bad boys that make up Adema are mad as hell and they're not going to take it anymore. Behind the tortured, angst-filled lyrics and dark, grinding song structures of his nu-metal band's debut there's obviously some serious strife and disaffection going on. Throughout ADEMA, the quintet uses savage drums, beastly guitars, and throat-rending vocals to display that inner turmoil. They've suffered for their art, and now the rest of the world is going to suffer. Of course, this kind of aural punishment is just what the doctor ordered for fans of the hard rock/heavy guitar sound practiced by Adema, so those who do time withthe group's self-titled debut recording should find the experience to be quite a sweet sentence. Porgy And Bess [Remastered]
This reissue of PORGY AND BESS contains 2 alternate takes. Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet, flugelhorn); Gil Evans (conductor, arranger); Julian "Cannonball" Adderley (alto saxophone); Ernie Royal, Bernie Glow, Johnny Coles, Louis Mucci (trumpet); Jimmy Cleveland, Dick Hixon, Frank Rehak, Joe Bennett (trombone); Willie Ruff, Gunther Schuller, Julius Watkins (French horn); Bill Barber (tuba); Jerome Richardson, Romeo Penque, Phil Bodner (flute, alto flute, clarinet); Danny Bank (alto flute, bass clarinet); Paul Chambers (acoustic bass); Jimmy Cobb, Philly Joe Jones (drums). Reissue producer: Phil Schaap. Recorded at 30th Street Studio, New York, New York in July and August 1958. Includes liner notes by Bill Kirchner and Phil Schaap, and original release liner notes by Charles Edward Smith. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Of all Gil Evans' orchestral scores for soulmate Miles Davis, PORGY AND BESS is his richest and most ambitious--a watershed of modern jazz harmony which served to secure Davis' pop star stature and define his brooding mystique. Inevitably, even non-jazz listeners own a copy of PORGY AND BESS or SKETCHES OF SPAIN. Like MILES AHEAD, Evans'band on PORGY AND BESS de-emphasized the traditional reed section in favor of a tuba, three French horns, two flutes and two saxophones. The resulting chords and overtones are dark, alluring and mysterious. Thus the opening brass-cymbal bluster of "The Buzzard Song" gives way to a mid-eastern carpet of flutes and deep brass as Davis' poignant trumpet speaks in split tones and yearning cadences, bursting with blues feeling; a tuba soon picks up the theme as muted trumpets are followed by tolling trombone/French horn chords. Each of the thirteen sections contrast lush instrumental details with intimate trumpet arias (which suggest the profound influence of Billie Holiday, particularly over the eerie textures of "I Loves You Porgy"). Evans' ability to orchestrate hypnotic call and response patterns with Davis, and his ability to layer multiple textures at contrasting tempos makes for several memorable moments: Philly Joe's dancing breaks and exchanges with Miles on "Gone," the church-like amens of "Gone, Gone, Gone," the counter-melodies on a lightly swinging "Summertime," Miles' sustained lyricism (and Evans' tart blue chordal rejoinders) on "Prayer," the brash after-hours swagger of "It Ain't Necessarily So," and the contrasting folkish themes of "Here Come De Honey Man." Timeless music. SKU: 1000550

Welcome [ECD] [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Taproot: Stephen Richards (vocals, guitar); Mike Dewolf (guitar); Phil Lipscomb (bass); Jarrod Montague (drums). Recorded at Cherokee Studios, Los Angeles, California. With Taproot's blend of socially conscious punk, hard rock and grindcore, this Michigan quartet claims its turf quite decisively on its second major-label release. From the opening fusillade of "Mine" through the swaying, grinding hardcore "Everything" to the gently lyrical introduction to "Art," they display a wide musical range that despite excursions into more experimental territory always cleaves to its rock roots. Lyrically their preoccupations are suitably youth-oriented--there's probably not much here that older fans haven't heard already--but for those looking for oldinsights sung as if realized for the first time, there's much to enjoy. They even take the occasional stab at grindcore cookie-monster vocals, notably on "Myself" and "When," but mostly WELCOME is an entertaining mix of hard-driving rock, angst-ridden lyrics with the occasional pop hook thrown in for good measure. Trampin'
'Trampin' is the ninth album from the highly influential Patti Smith and follows 2000's 'Gung Ho'. Recorded mostly live, without overdubs, the albumis very much in the vein of Smith's earlier work with her lyrics being inspired by 9/11 and the 2003 war in Iraq. The album also features a guest appearance from Smith's daughter Jesse playing piano on the closing track 'Trampin''. SKU: 6557680

Rage In Eden
Ultravox includes: Midge Ure (vocals, guitar); Billy Currie (keyboards); Chris Cross (bass); Warren Cann (drums). VIENNA introduced ex-Rich Kids vocalist/guitarist Midge Ure, who stepped in to fill guitarist Robin Simon and singer John Foxx's shoes, and heralded a shift to a more lush, synth-driven melodic approach. Its successor RAGE IN EDEN follows the path, exploiting Ure's almost Freddie Mercury-like operatic tendencies and further promoting the move toward more accessible melodies. The biggest difference is a darker mood that makes RAGE IN EDEN Ultravox's most ominous-soundingeffort. As before, Billy Currie's signature ARP synthesizer leads wail and squeal over the predominantly electronic rhythm tracks, and Ure's theatrical vocals up the drama quotient. But with the apocalyptic/paranoid lyrics of "The Thin Wall" and "Stranger Within," and the quiet doominess of "I Remember (Death in the Afternoon)," the group appears like the herald of some dread new order of European society. Fortunately for the listener, memorable melodies and syncopated rhythms accompany these dark themes. On "Your Name (Has Slipped My Mind Again)," the 'Voxers prove they don't need synthesizers to sound creepy, as Ure delivers a chilling plaint over little more than piano and bass drum. Successive albums would move Ultravox ever closer to pure pop, but RAGE is surely its most unnerving moment. SKU: 1005815

Rapture
Personnel includes: Anita Baker (vocals); Greg Phillingaines (keyboards); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion). From the opening piano chords of `Sweet Love', you know there is a good song coming. Ex-Chapter 8 vocalist Baker has an effortless delivery that swoops and dips like a swallow. `Sweet Love' is just one of those soul songs that people who say they don't like soul music like. The choice of material is superb, and heart-tugging songs such as David Lasley's `You Bring Me Joy' or Ken Hirsch and Marti Sharron's `No One In The World' are only beaten by Baker's voice. The slower material is stronger and only `Watch Your Step' and `Same Ole Love' fail to hitthe spot, simply because of the mood the other tracks set. SKU: 1005559

Best Of David Lee Roth, The

Engineers include: Freebo. Producers: Ted Templeman, David Lee Roth, Bob Rock, Nile Rogers, Wawazat!! Compilation producer: Wawazat!! Recorded between 1985 and 1994. Includes liner notes by David Lee Roth. Although he'll always be known first and foremost as the lead singer of Van Halen, David Lee Roth forged a successful solo career after splitting from the band in 1985. And since some of his solo releases were better than others, 1997's THE BEST proves to be a solid introduction and overview of Roth's work. At a whopping 20 tracks in length, all the expected DLR standards are featured--fun covers of "California Girls," "Just A Gigolo," and "Tobacco Road," as well as the white hot rocker "Shy Boy," and the expected hits ("Yankee Rose," "Goin' Crazy," "Just Like Paradise"). Also included is a brand new song, "Don't Piss Me Off," as well as the new wave-esque "Stand Up," and two surprisingly laid back rockers, "Big Trouble" and "Ladies Night in Buffalo." While some longtime fans may wonder why such strong album tracks as "Knucklebones" and "Hina" aren't included, the tracklisting is near-perfect, making THE BEST a superb summary of the Diamond one. Blush
Bows: Luke Sutherland. Additional personnel: Signe Hoirop Wille-Jorgensen, Ruth Emond (vocals). Following Long Fin Killie's dissolution, Luke Sutherland spent some time writing a novel, JELLY ROLL. He reemerged under the name Bows, a trip hop-influenced combo featuring guest spots by ex-Killie Colin Greig, and Ruth Emond, who had appeared on the first Killie album, HOUDINI. Whereas Sutherland's previous band had for the most part taken a comprehensive approach to stylistic influences, Bows concentrated on producing seriously laid-back grooves. BLUSH standouts include the mind-melting "Speed Marina," the headlong combination of a harpsichord, the Chemical Brothers, and a smoky 1940s jazz club; "Girls Lips Glitter," which pairsSutherland's understated vocals and Emond's languid jazz vibe with clattering percussion and shimmering keyboards; and "Sleepyhead," which suggests Tricky recording spaghetti Western soundtracks in an echo chamber. Arguably, the highlight is the album closer, "Rockets," a seven-minute head-trip into pop's most ambient regions, propelled by a variety of instruments. BLUSH is a gorgeously dense album best heard very late over electric neon-colored cocktails in a pitch-black room. An essential purchase for nighthawks. SKU: 5066964

Up For The Down Stroke [Remastered]
Parliament: Eddie Hazel, Gary Shider (vocals, guitar); George Clinton (vocals); Bill Nelson (guitar); Bernie Worrell (keyboards); William"Bootsy" Collins, Cordell Mosson (bass); Gary Bronson, Tiki Fulwood (drums); Peter Chase (whistles). Recorded at United Sound, Detroit, Michegan; Crystal Sound Studios and Hollywood Sound, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Jason Chervokas. Though the heavier, harder, and more psychedelic Funkadelic was George Clinton's main outfit in the early '70, the creation of Parliament (named for Clinton's '60s soul group, The Parliaments, which included many core members of Parliament/Funkadelic) is at least as important in the history of P-Funk. In contrast to Funkadelic's acid-rock freak-outs, Parliament emphasizes vocals and horn riffs while highlighting tunes and melodies. Early efforts of the brilliantly creative songwriting team of George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, and Bernie Worrell (who would achieve apotheosis on MOTHERSHIP CONNECTION) are on display here. Many of these tracks are textured, psychedelicized rewrites of such Parliament songs as "(I Just Wanna) Testify," the group's first #1 hit. The deeply soulful, multi-part vocal version of this track is pure genius and is arguably the album's highlight. The title cut--another hit for the band--is one of Parliament's most infectious booty-movers, and it would be a staple of their live acts for years to follow. While not essential, UP FOR THE DOWN STROKE is an interesting peek at the beginnings of funk's finest ensemble. SKU: 1083835

Seal
Personnel: Seal, Curt Bisquera, Paulinho Da Costa, Richard Cottle, Andy Duncan, Denny Fongheiser, Robin Hancock, Trevor Horn, Guy Isidore, Randall Jacobs, Luis Jardim, Chester Kamen, Mars Lasar, Keith Le Blanc, Mark Mancina, Gary Maughn, Ian Morrow, Jamie Muhoberac, Steve Pearce, John Robinson, Chrissie Schefts, Guy Sigsworth, Kenji Suzuki, Maria Vidale, Doug Wimbish, Bruce Woolley, Gota Yashiki. Released in 1991, Seal's self-titled debut attracted a Top-40 crowd, dance enthusiasts, and fans of expertly crafted pop-rock songs. Producer Trevor (Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Yes) Horn helped Seal achieve a sonically rich sound right off the bat--while the songs have electronic elements (drum-machine beats, samples, etc.), there is an underlying organic texture to SEAL that makes it a classic. A significant reason for the album's warmthcomes form acoustic and electric guitar, which serve as the root elements for many of the songs. In addition, Seal's soulful voice and hopeful, introspective lyrics add to the winning combination. Though the album-opening "The Beginning" may give the listener the impression that SEAL is purely a dance album, this couldn't be further from the truth. Seal proves expert in crafting tranquil compositions ("Deep Water," "Whirlpool," "Show Me," "Violet"), as well as in more rock-oriented and funk fare ("Future Love Paradise," the chart success "Crazy,"), and dance-floor shakers ("Killer"). Seal's self-titled debut was easily one of the best of the '90s. SKU: 1003766
